A Run in the Park There is nothing like the starting line. The collective anxiety and excitement of a mass of people standing shoulder to shoulder eagerly anticipating the sounding of the starting horn. There is a buzz throughout the participants. They talk about the weather, the hills, and the course. It is a positive crowd. There are no political debates, no arguments. Everyone there hopes they finish and that everyone around them finishes as well.

The buzz of the crowd turns to a murmur as the race announcements begin. Participants whisper to one another while last-minute advice and instructions are heard through the speakers. The announcements subside and the murmur is replaced with "America the Beautiful."

Runners' arms are swinging about and they are running in place to keep their muscles warm. The announcer returns to the speakers and asks for a moment of silence.

Everything stops and 15 seconds feel like minutes.

Standing in Peninsula State Park with thousands of people – you can only hear the branches moving in the wind and the sounds of the park. More than 2,000 people share silence in the woods.

The silence is replaced with a short countdown and then the horn sounds and the runners are off.

On the morning of May 6, 2017, runners will be at the start of either the Door County Half Marathon or the Nicolet Bay 5k. All with the same goal – to finish. It is a good day to be in the park. It is a good day for a run. Thank you Door County for all of your support and thank you runners for participating.

HALF MARATHON The Door County Half Marathon will start at 10 am Saturday, May 6. Runners should allow 10 – 15 minutes to walk from the Runners’ Concourse to the starting line on Shore Road.

2016 CHAMPIONS Tyler Sigl of Seymour cruised to his first Door County Half Marathon victory in 2016 in a time of 1:10:02, the fifth fastest time in course history. Sigl is one of the top ultra marathoners in the United States.

On the women’s side, Valerie Hubbard of Onalaska finished in 1:26:19 to claim her first win at the Door County Half Marathon.

In the Nicolet Bay 5k, 15 year-old Dustin Hudak of Lowell, IN, won his second straight title with a course record time of 15:59. Valerie Fetting of Kronenwetter, WI was the top female finisher in 22:07.

The entire half marathon is run on paved surfaces in Peninsula State Park. The U.S. Track and Field-certified course starts and finishes near Nicolet Beach. The course takes runners past breathtaking views of Green Bay, shaded areas through the woods, challenging hills and ever-changing scenery through one of Wisconsin’s most beautiful parks.

MP3 players are allowed for the race, but sorry, no dogs or strollers are allowed on the course due to space and safety concerns. Walkers are welcome and should plan to finish by the time the course opens to traffic at 1:30 pm.

Walkers should be aware that if your pace is slower than 16 minutes per mile, not all course amenities may be available later in the race, since time constraints require us to break down aid stations to reopen the park roads.

All half marathon participants receive a t-shirt, a finisher’s medal, and food and drink (including Door County Brewing Co. beer and Tapuat Kombucha!) in the Runners’ Concourse area.

Runners also receive a drink ticket good for a beer or root beer at five of our sponsor restaurants (see post-race party details). Don't forget your ID for beer.

NICOLET BAY 5K The Nicolet Bay 5k begins at 10:15 am, just after the start of the half marathon. The starting line is also on Shore Road, but a few hundred yards from the start of the half marathon.

Runners will follow the out and back course to the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, where they will turn around for the finishing kick to the same finish line as the half marathoners.

MP3 players are allowed, but sorry, no dogs or strollers are allowed on the course due to space and safety concerns. Walkers are welcome in the 5k.

Thank you for participating in the 10th annual Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5k. Here’s a quick guide to make your run preparation as easy as possible. Good luck!

FRIDAY, MAY 5 • Check out the course in Peninsula State Park, 8 am until dusk.

• Packet Pickup at the Ephraim Village Hall from 1 – 9 pm. (Packet pickup on Saturday is at Nicolet Bay inside the park). Get official Door County Half Marathon gear at the expo or shop for great gear from our sponsor vendors: Bay Shore Outdoor Store, and Run Away Shoes.

• Purchase annual ($28 for WI plates, $38 for out-of-state plates) or daily ($8, $11) park stickers at Packet Pickup if you plan to drive to the park. Pay by cash or check only.

SATURDAY, MAY 6 • The Door County Half Marathon begins at 10 am. The starting line is near the boat launch. (See map.)

SHUTTLE SCHEDULE Saturday, May 6 Shuttles will do a one-time pick up for guests at designated lodging sponsors at 8 am. Additional shuttles will run continuously from our Park and Ride locations, Skyway Drive-In Theatre and Gibraltar School, from 8 am – 3:30 pm. It is about a 20 minute ride from any of our stops to the Runners’ Concourse inside the park.

Shuttles will make return stops to our lodging sponsors and our Park and Ride locations from 11 am – 3:30 pm. Please note designated roads inside the park will be closed until 1:30 pm.

• If you carpool you must have an annual or daily Wisconsin State Park parking sticker. Annual stickers are available at both the Fish Creek and Ephraim park entrances. The Fish Creek entrance is only open until 9 am. We suggest that you purchase your annual sticker before race day to avoid delays. Daily stickers are available at packet pickup on Friday or at the Fish Creek or Ephraim entrances. At the Ephraim entrance you may pay by cash or check only. Parking is limited.

• Both participants and spectators may ride the shuttle to the park.

Sorry, dogs are not allowed on the shuttles. Please see the schedule for details.

• Plan to arrive at Peninsula State Park between 8 and 9:15 am to avoid delays getting to the starting line. You may use the Fish Creek entrance until 9 am. The Ephraim entrance will remain open. Park Greeters will assist you at each entrance.

• At 9:45 am all course roads inside the park will be closed to all traffic except shuttle buses and emergency vehicles. All roads will re-open at 1:30 pm.

Pasta Dinner Specials Several of our great restaurant sponsors will offer pasta specials the night before the race. The Cookery, Julie's Park Café, White Gull Inn and Grasse’s Grill will each offer special pasta options. These restaurants will also be offering their full menu that night.

The Cookery, Fish Creek Whole Wheat Linguine with Wild Shrimp: Wild shrimp sauteed with garlic, pimentón (Spanish paprika) and red pepper flakes, finished with dry sherry. Tossed with whole wheat linguine and garnished with parmesan.

Vegetarian Linguine: Broccoli, zucchini, eggplant, summer squash, red peppers, and green onions sautéed with garlic, pimento (Spanish paprika) and red pepper flakes, finished with dry sherry and tossed with whole wheat linguine and parmesan.

Roasted Tomato Orecchiette: Orecchiette pasta baked with oven roasted cherry tomatoes, basil, garlic, crushed red pepper, ricotta and parmesan.

AFTER YOU ARRIVE IN THE PARK At the Runners' Concourse • The Runners’ Concourse is located near Nicolet Beach. Here you will find Packet Pickup, Gear Check, Merchandise, Pace Team info, Concessions, and Bathrooms.

• Porta-johns will be located in the Runners’ Concourse as well as near the starting line and just before each aid station.

• Your cell phone may not work in the park. Designate a location to meet with family and friends after the race.

• The starting line for the Door County Half Marathon is roughly a half mile from the Runners' Concourse. Please give yourself 15 minutes to walk from the concourse to the starting line and find your spot in the starting chute. Slower runners and walkers should start near the back of the pack.

On the course • Porta-johns will be located at the starting line and just before each aid station.

• The safest place to warm up for the half marathon is on the course from the finish line to the two-mile mark. This section of the course will be closed early to all traffic.

• Aid stations will have water and original Gatorade. Caffeinefree vanilla and berry Clif Shot Gel packs will be available at the aid station located near mile 8. Medical personnel will be on site.

PLAY YOUR MUSIC - BUT FOR YOURSELF

We know that music helps get many runners to the finish line faster, but we ask you to respect the experience of your fellow runners.

Keep your volume to a reasonable level so that those who want to enjoy their run in the park can do so without hearing your mix (we know it’s awesome...for you). And certainly do not use speakers that project your music beyond your eardrums.

Be considerate and mindful of other runners and help everyone have a great experience on the course!

Important race notes • Running with another person’s bib is not allowed.

• Your timing chip is affixed to your bib. To ensure that your race time is recorded, bibs must be affixed to the front of your torso and should not be covered by another layer of clothing.

Affixing your bib to the side of your shorts or your back greatly reduces reliability of the timing chip.

TAKE PRECAUTIONS FOR YOUR MEDICAL CARE

• If you do not run in the race that you signed up for, your results will not be valid.

In order to facilitate care by our staff in case of an emergency or other event we ask that you provide some basic medical information on the back of your bib number. In the case of an emergency, seconds count!

• For the safety of all runners, strollers and dogs are not allowed on the course in either race. Runners on the course with strollers or dogs will be removed from the course by race officials.

Please take a moment to write your name, address, and emergency contact information on the back of your runner’s bib. If you have any significant health issues, allergies, or are taking medications, please list them as well. This is an important first step in providing pertinent information that will expedite decision making and care on your behalf.

After the race

We hope we never have to make use of this information, but if we do, it will help our staff provide you with the best care possible.

• Half marathoners will receive their finisher’s medals in the finish chute. Participants should proceed to the Runners’ Tent for water, Gatorade, food, race results, and bag pickup. This is also where you can claim your free beer from Door County Brewing Co. and unlimited free kombucha from Sister Bay’s Tapuat Kombucha! Don't forget your ID for beer.

• Athletic trainers from Ministry Door County Medical Center will be stationed at the Door County Medical Center Tent in the Runners’ Concourse.

• Awards ceremony for overall winners only for 5k will be at 11:15am. Please make sure to check the results board to see if you’re an age group winner (1st, 2nd & 3rd) and pick up your award at the awards table.

• Awards ceremony for overall winners and male & female masters only for the half marathon will be at 12:30pm. Please make sure to check the results board to see if you’re an age group winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th) and pick up your award at the awards table.

• The Big Mouth Trio will provide live music from 11 am - 3 pm.

• The final shuttle leaves the concourse at 3:30 pm and the post-race party will move to Husby’s in Sister Bay, where we’ll be raffling off prizes from local businesses and great Door County Half Marathon gear!

• Support our sponsors! You will receive a drink ticket at packet pickup good for a beverage at Husby’s, White Gull Inn, The Cookery, Julie’s Cafe, Grasse’s Grill, and Al Johnson’s Stabbur.

Runner Recovery Tips from Dr. Rory Johnson Dr. Rory Johnson, primary care/family medicine provider at Door County Medical Center Clinic Fish Creek, is medical director of the Door County Half Marathon. Here are some tips from Dr. Johnson for a speedy post-race recovery: ● Fuel. Have a light snack within 20 minutes. A four to one carbohydrate to protein ratio is ideal, such as banana with peanut butter or yogurt and granola. The evening after your run, have a decent meal balancing protein, carbs and fat. ● Stretch. Within 30 minutes of finishing your run, stretch for 10-15 minutes, focusing on major muscle groups, with extra attention to any areas that felt sore during the event. ● Hydrate. Within first 10-15 minutes, drink plenty of water or electrolyte drink, and keep up water intake for the rest of the day. “Even if the temperature is cool, you’ll lose lots of fluid. Keeping muscles hydrated will help prevent soreness.” ● Rest. Put your feet up, or better yet, take a nap.

If you need an excuse for a massage, now is the time! ● Bathe. Within an hour or two of bed, take a warm bath. After a bath, stretch again before sleeping. A bath also helps with a good night’s sleep, another key factor in recovery.

AID STATIONS Aid stations for the Door County Half Marathon and the Nicolet Bay 5k are staffed by volunteers from peninsula nonprofits. The County Half Marathon donates at least $500 to the organization of each group’s choice. (But a “Thank you!” as you run by is appreciated!)

Located on the half marathon route at mile 1 1/2 and at mile 11 1/2. Located on the Nicolet Bay 5k route at about the 1 1/2 mile mark.

The Friends of Peninsula State Park are dedicated to the preservation of Peninsula State Park, assuring that this spectacular wilderness and shoreline is enjoyed for generations. Peninsula State Park provides spectators with a one-of-a-kind viewing experience, giving you incredible views of natural splendor while you catch friends and family as they take on the challenging course.

The Half Marathon begins at 10 am, the 5k at 10:15 am, a few hundred yards behind the start of the half marathon.

Roads into the park close at 9 am. Spectators may ride shuttles into the park.

1. The Starting Line: While the starting line can be accessed via Shore Road from the Runners’ Concourse, it is recommended that spectators walk the trail along Nicolet Bay to reduce congestion in the starting chute. The starting line is a 10 - 15 minute walk from the Runners’ Concourse.

When exiting the Nicolet Bay Boat Launch parking lot, spectators will have a great place to see the runners off for the half marathon and have plenty of time to walk back along Shore Road to get to the start of the Nicolet Bay 5k if you want.

3. Mile 6/10 intersection: Get to this viewing spot by taking Sunset Trail from the Runners' Concourse to Bluff Road. Cross Bluff Road, making sure not to interrupt runners and follow the signs down Hemlock Road. (Please stay to the right side of the cones when heading to the 6/10 intersection and on the left when returning from the 6/10 intersection.) This viewing spot is about three-quarters of a mile from the Runners’ Concourse, and spectators should allow 15-20 minutes to walk to the intersection of Hemlock and Skyline Roads.

From here, you can catch runners twice, first as they speed down the hill of Skyline Road near mile six, then again as they make the turn to the homestretch at mile 10.

4. The Finish Line: Located near the Runners’ Concourse, the Finish Line is on Shore Road. Line the finish chute and make some noise to propel runners through their final strides. (This is also the finish line for the Nicolet Bay 5k.)

Bikes, Beer, and Music at the Door County Beer Festival June 17 The Door County Beer Festival and Peninsula Century Spring Classic bike ride return to Baileys Harbor June 17.

The 29th Spring Classic ride will welcome more than 800 riders to enjoy one of four great routes.

Whether riding 25, 50, 62, or 100 miles, riders will take in beautiful scenery and vistas on Door County’s back roads.

50 breweries. Many of the state’s top brewers will be in attendance. Chefs from Chives, Fireside, Wickman House, Door County Creamery, and The Whistling Swan will present mouthwatering fare street-food style on the lawn.

Routes will feature up to six aid stations stocked with specialty food items, beverages, and mechanics to support your ride. Finish with a post-ride lunch of pasta, caesar salad, and bites from local chefs at the finish line. Come Back for Winter Fun at the Door County Pond Hockey Tournament The Door County Pond Hockey Tournament is making big plans for its 5th anniversary in 2018, moving to a new weekend, adding family activities, and new amenities for players and fans.

The fifth annual tournament will take place one week later, on Feb. 10, 2018. The move will move the tournament away from Fish Creek Winter Games weekend, giving locals and visitors another exciting weekend in Door County, and enabling more people to check out the excitement on Kangaroo Lake.

“We’ve grown from five teams in 2013, to 39 teams this year, and we want more locals and visitors to be a part of the event,” said organizer Brian Fitzgerald.

“We expect to grow a little more, and this will make it easier to get volunteers and staff, and allows us to add more activities to the atmosphere.”

In addition to the player’s tent, the 2018 event will add a large, heated spectator tent with food, beer and other beverages, and live music. After the champions are presented with the coveted Stanley Thermos, Maxwelton Braes will host a post-tournament party with live music, beer from Door County Brewing Co., and a rod-hockey tournament.

Check Your PACE Pace team on hand to guide runners Pacers will be on hand at the Door County Half Marathon to help guide runners to a successful finish. Meet our pacers at the Pace Team tent at the expo Friday and at the runner’s concourse before the race. You’ll find them at the starting line holding signs with their goal finish times on them.

The team is organized by Krista Eliot, a veteran of 40 marathons and experienced member of both New Balance and Nike pace teams. Eliot said the pace team’s goal is to help runners finish within one minute of the goal time. “We’re here to help you, provide encouragement and support for runners to keep that finish goal in sight,” Eliot said.

The hills of the race challenge runners, especially if you have not done any hill training for the race.

Runners should not necessarily expect pacers to run at the exact same pace throughout the race.

Pace team members aim to maintain their prescribed pace up the hills, but there will likely be a slower pace going uphill, and faster going downhill. They will also slow or stop at aid stations, with slower pace teams taking slightly more time.

MyTEAM TRIUMPH Makes the Impossible, Possible The Door County Half Marathon is proud to welcome eight inspiring Captains from MyTEAM TRIUMPH this year.

MyTEAM TRIUMPH is a non-profit athletic mentoring program created for people with disabilities who would normally be unable to participate in endurance events.

Teams of “Angels” help their Captain athlete complete races by pushing them in specialized wheelchairs, pulling them behind bikes, and swimming with them in rafts to complete half marathons, triathlons, cycling events, and endurance events short and long.

When you see them on the course, don’t be shy showing your support for these amazing athletes and their Angels running with them to get them to the finish line!

Brian Fitzgerald Is the co-founder of the Peninsula Pacers, organizers of the Door County Half Marathon, the Peninsula Century Ride Fall Challenge, Door County Pond Hockey Tournament, Door County Beer Festival and the Peninsula Century Spring Classic. He handles the course and aid station operations for the MS Challenge Walk in September, and is the bike and course director for the Door County Triathlon. He is also a potter who owned his own studio, Ephraim Clayworks, for many years.

The 3-time marathon finisher and Door County native moved home to Sister Bay in May, where he is a writer and editor for the Peninsula Pulse and Door County Living. He has written about running for Running Times, Silent Sports, and Chicago Athlete.

JONI WITALISON Volunteer Coordinator

Restaurant and has called Door County home since 2000. He is an avid cyclist and cycling instructor who spends his spare time helping with off-road trail maintenance in the county’s state parks and working on his Fish Creek home. He is the route director for the Peninsula Century Spring Classic and the Peninsula Century Fall Challenge bike rides.

Joni Witalison is a Door County native who resides in Fish Creek with her husband Gary. She is a mother of four (Dalton, Travis, Brady and Allura).

She helps coordinate volunteers in Girl Scouting, at the Door Community Auditorium as well as other Pacers events. Joni recently opened her own salon, A Cut Above, in Fish Creek.

LAURA BRADLEY Assistant Race Organizer After spending several summers in Door County, Laura made the decision to call it home in 2009.

She lives in Sister Bay with her husband, Bryan, and works as the Marketing and Sales Manager for the Door County Visitor Bureau.

An outdoor enthusiast, Brian enjoys to crosscountry ski, run and bike throughout the peninsula. He and his wife Tracey live in Ephraim with their two children, Ben and Abbey.

Sverre Falck-Pedersen moved to Fish Creek from the Chicago area in 1986 to renovate a resort with his wife Chris. He ran track and cross country at Knox College and was the Gibraltar High School Middle Distance Track and Cross Country Coach for 25 years. He is a three-time National Age Group Middle Distance and cross country Master Champion and has 30 badger state and Senior Olympic golds in road racing, track, cycling and triathlons.

They Inspire Without Ever Crossing the Finish Line

One of the best parts of working the Door County Half Marathon is coming together with such a fantastic group of volunteers each year.

From Girl Scouts to high school track teams and from business owners to visitors who just want to be a part of the event, we get to spend the week with some of the best people in our community and beyond.

More than 200 volunteers help us put this event together each May, and no matter what we throw at them, they respond with enthusiasm and a smile.

Some work from dusk till dawn, and we can’t thank them enough.

They are the reason this race has such an incredible feel to it, why runners come back year after year, and why we have so much fun putting it together.

The Sister Bay native is a teacher who returned to Sister Bay in 2013 with his wife Jordan and their two kids.

JORDAN BURRESS Registration Director Jordan Burress is the Registration Director for the Door County Half Marathon, Peninsula Century Rides, and Door County Pond Hockey Tournament. She moved to Door County in 2013 and has loved every minute of living here.

Before making Door County home, Jordan worked with the City of Monona Parks and Recreation as the Recreation/Aquatics Supervisor, and with the City of Platteville as the Recreation Coordinator.

Jordan also works at Ecology and enjoys her days off at home with her two daughters, Avery and Quinn. She enjoys spending time with her husband Justin, family and friends, traveling, and being outdoors.

KRISTA ELIOT Pace Team Coordinator

The Door County Half Marathon pace team is organized by experienced marathon pacer and Baileys Harbor resident Krista Eliot.

Larson lives in Baileys Harbor, where he works for Great Northern Construction and loves to play basketball and golf. He has two children and is an indispensable member of our finish line crew!

Eliot has paced for both the New Balance and Nike Pace teams for 11 years, which has included pacing the Chicago Marathon each year since 2005.

A veteran of 40 marathons (including 13 Bostons), Eliot's PR is 3:09 and she has paced several different marathon goal times.

LAURA FITZGERALD Race Shuttle Coordinator Laura has called Door County home since moving from Minnesota in 1989. She is the mother of three girls; Hannah, Rachel, Alicia, a manager at Wilson’s Ice Cream Parlor and a hostess at Sister Bay Bowl.

In her free time Laura enjoys reading, watching movies, biking, running, hiking in Peninsula State Park and working to improve her golf game. In the offseason she also enjoys traveling, searching out a great cup of coffee along the way.

BRIAN LARSON Brian Larson is a fifth generation Door County

TRACEY FITZGERALD Office Manager Tracey Fitzgerald is an avid runner and outdoor enthusiast who loves running the trails and back roads of Door County.

Tracey works at Door County Carpet One and Bay Property Services of Door County. She has stepped in wherever needed to help with the Door County Half Marathon, the Peninsula Century Rides, and several other Pacers events since our first race in 2008. She lives in Ephraim with Brian and her children Ben and Abbey.

LARS JOHNSON Door County Half Marathon Co-founder Lars is co-owner of Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant. He has completed 15 marathons, including the Boston Marathon in 2003, and was integral in

the formation of the Door County Half Marathon.

He lives in Sister Bay with his wife, Jill, and sons, Bjorn and Thor.

DAVID ELIOT Door County Half Marathon Co-founder

Eliot is constantly searching for new ways to enhance life in Door County for residents and visitors alike.

He founded the Peninsula Pulse newspaper in 1996 and has been an integral part of the Door County community ever since. The publisher of Door County Living magazine and co-founder of the Peninsula Pacers, the organizer of the Door County Half Marathon, Door County Beer Festival, Peninsula Century Rides, Hey Hey 5k and the Door County Pond Hockey Tournament, Eliot served as the Chairman of the Door County Visitor Bureau, serves on the boards of the Door Community Auditorium, Door County Triathlon, and serves as the Past Chairman of the Door County Community Foundation. In 2015 he launched Peninsula Filmworks to tell the stories of Door County on camera.

The Green Bay Press Gazette came out against establishing the park, as did Door County historian H.R. Holand (who owned land within the park). Even the Door County Advocate expressed reservations.

But Thomas Reynolds, an assemblyman from Jacksonport, spoke passionately for the park and proved persuasive.

Peninsula has become one of the state’s most popular parks, and its most complete, featuring an 18-hole golf course, hiking, skiing, and biking trails, the renowned Northern Sky Theater, historic Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, and Horseshoe Island.

Nicolet Bay Beach has been called one of the best beaches in the country, and the Door County Half Marathon, held in the park each May, owes much of its national acclaim to the scenery of the park.

The future of the park’s most popular attraction is uncertain. When Eagle Tower was deemed unsafe in 2015, the state announced it would not provide

1909 Peninsula State Park land is purchased by the state of Wisconsin for $20 an acre. Park opens.

1913 Albert E. Doolittle becomes park’s first manager.

1916 Camp Meenahga, a camp for girls, is opened by two young widows from St. Louis.

1917 First six holes of Peninsula Golf Course open.

1919 Park records an estimated 20,000 visitors.

1926 Eagle Bluff Lighthouse is automated.

1927 40-foot Memorial Pole dedicated to the Potawatomi nation is erected by the Door County Historical Society.

1931 Chief Simon Onanguisse Kahquados is buried on the course near Memorial Pole in ceremony attended by 15,000.

Friends of Peninsula State Park The Friends of Peninsula State Park contribute more than 2,000 volunteer hours each year removing invasive species, improving trails, assisting at the nature center, and raising funds for programs, staffing, and improvements to the park.

The group has helped fund a summer naturalist, trail specialist, nature programs, new bathrooms at Nicolet Bay, ski trail grooming equipment, renovate the White Cedar Nature Center, among other projects.

In 2016, the group launched its most ambitious endeavor yet, aiming to raise more than $750,000 to rebuild Eagle Tower. www.peninsulafriends.org

1940s Ski Jump and toboggan run are abandoned.

1992 Deer hunting introduced in park. 44 deer harvested.

1947 Sven’s Tower is removed due to dry rot.

1996 Park headquarters expanded and remodeled.

1961 Last life leases that enabled people to live in the park expire as residents die.

1964 White Cedar Nature Center established in former winter warming house.

1970 Memorial Pole is replaced with pine laminate replica.

James Peterson casts 18 singers and musicians to perform “Song of the Inland Seas” on an old stage in the woods of the park. They become “The Heritage Ensemble,” performing each summer.

1981 Peninsula Golf Association reaches agreement to manage golf course.

1932 Second Eagle Tower is constructed.

1982 Sunset Bike Trail surfaced. Computers first used for camping reservations.

1935 A Civilian Conservation Corps camp of 208 men builds stone fences, clears hiking trails and roads, plants trees, and refurbishes the ski jump and toboggan run. Also builds eagle terrace.

1990 Fred Alley, Doc Heide, and Gerald Pelrine transform the Heritage Ensemble into American Folklore Theatre, which quickly earns regional and national acclaim.

It is later renamed Northern Sky Theater.

2001 Nicolet Beach is temporarily closed when 68 swimmers suffer from gastrointestinal illness traced to E. coli contamination at the beach, leading to regular water quality testing and beach management reforms at most Door County beaches.

2006 University of Wisconsin Press publishes Door County’s Emerald Treasure, a history of the park, by William Tishler.

2009 Park celebrates 100th anniversary.

2014 Peninsula Golf Association opens 6-hole short course for youth play.

2015 Eagle Tower closed for safety reasons. It is dismantled in 2016.
