2026 Wine Fest Event Guide

Page 1

Wine has been produced commercially in Door County for over 50 years. There’s history and tradition in the region. What started as apple and cherry wine production has transformed over the years to also include locally grown grapes and classic grape varieties brought in from all over the United States to be made by winemakers right here. It’s wine, yes, but it’s a celebration of the makers too. It’s a craft. It’s also a partnership. There are many wineries on the Door County Wine Trail. We’re all different, but that’s what makes the Trail complete. New visitors can taste their way across all wineries and find their niche. It’s a pilgrimage for annual visitors. It’s sharing an experience with friends and family to be remembered and relived year after year.

As Local As It Gets

Wine Trail is truly field to bottle

Long before “farm-to-table” became a restaurant cliché, Door County was doing something quieter and more fundamental: turning its harvest into wine.

The peninsula’s winemaking story begins not with grapes, but with cherries – the fruit that has shaped Door County’s landscape, economy, and identity for generations. In the 1960s, a country doctor named Doc Stiehl began pressing cherries from his Maplewood orchards in his basement, eventually convincing the state of Wisconsin to write winery licensing legislation and claiming its first license in 1967. What he understood intuitively is what the world’s great wine regions have always known: you start with what the land gives you.

That tradition runs deep for good reason. The world’s great wine regions were built on whatever fruit grew best nearby – and in Door County, that long meant cherries and apples. But in recent years the region has become increasingly known for its own grape cultivation.

In all, more than 300 tons of fruit grown between our shores into wine and cider production here each year, making this one of the most genuinely field-tobottle wine cultures in the country.

There’s a practical dimension to it, too. Much of the fruit used is bruised or blemished but still perfectly flavorful, giving growers a secondary market that keeps orchards financially viable, which in turn keeps the landscape and traditions that define Door County intact. It’s a quiet but essential economic loop.

The county is also evolving. Grape acreage is on the rise, supplementing imports from California, Washington, and

New York, and winemakers are pushing into more traditional styles alongside their fruit wines. Wine appreciators are hard-pressed to find another region offering as much variety in such a small area.

None of this is easy. Grapes have centuries of winemaking science behind them. Working with cherries, apples, and other fruits demands a different kind of expertise – managing unpredictable acidity and sugar levels, coaxing complexity from unconventional raw materials. The toughest obstacle, though, is cultural: the stubborn assumption that serious wine can only come from

traditional vitis vinifera grapes and wellknown regions. The winemakers of the Door County Wine Trail are quietly dismantling that idea, one bottle and one vintage at a time. Winemaking here is about the grower who tends the orchard and the winemaker who transforms that harvest, the visitor who discovers something unexpected in a glass. It’s about sustainability, freshness, and a sense of place you can actually taste. When we talk about local food culture, this is exactly the kind of story that deserves center stage.
