Happy 25th Anni ve rsa ry, dca ! Welcome to all, and thank you for being part of this special year. How happy we are to celebrate all that has taken place at DCA since the doors opened in 1991. Thank you for 25 years of music and dance and theatre, for films, lectures, art exhibits and poetry. We celebrate seeing performers like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, Melissa Etheridge, and Lyle Lovett, and we celebrate watching children and grandchildren step onto the stage, gaining courage and spreading their wings. We’ve been moved to tears and laughter and felt the bond of shared experiences connecting us to one another, showing us we’re more alike than different. We’ve had fun, we’ve learned things we didn’t know before, and our hearts have grown. In the mid-1980s, when a small group of people envisioned a professional school/ community performance space for year-round concerts and plays and touring artists and the summer Peninsula Music Festival, it seemed to many a nearly impossible dream. It took years to develop a plan, raise the money, overcome opposition, and gather other dreamers who believed this would be something meaningful for our community. In June 1990 when ground was broken, over 1200 people had made donations to make this dream come true. You will see their names painted on the lobby walls beneath the David Giffey murals, Door County, The Land and Door County, The Water. Since then, hundreds more have kept the dream alive as donors, sponsors, ticket-buyers, staff and volunteers, mentors and teachers. People said that we were dreamers, but we weren’t the only ones. And that’s the beauty of art, how it can inspire us and bring us together, how it opens hearts and minds, how it transforms us and makes us bigger in spirit. And how it fosters a deep commitment to make sure Door Community Auditorium continues to be as wonderful as we promised it would be. I find myself as the last of the original “emeritus directors,” but I speak for Betsy Guenzel, Marian Hislop, George Larson, Laurie Nowack and Peter Trenchard when I say a heartfelt thank you for being part of this dream-come-true. May it continue to bring us opportunities to learn and grow and celebrate life together.

Thank you to all! Anne Haberland Emerson Founder & Emeritus Director

The LINK GALLERY OF CHILDREN’S ART Beginning in the early 1990s, The Link Gallery at Door Community Auditorium featured regional, national, and international artwork created by a mix of professional and aspiring adult and student artists. The space was aptly named The Link Gallery because the gallery corridor physically connected the auditorium with Gibraltar Schools and its exhibits would link performances with educational opportunities and visual art with the performing arts. More than two decades and dozens of captivating exhibits later, the space was re-dedicated in spring 2015 as The Link Gallery of Children’s Art, Door County’s first and only exhibit space dedicated solely to the exhibition of artwork that portrays the world through the eyes of children. The space continues to celebrate the limitless connections between education, performing arts, visual arts, nature, community, and the broader world around us. The Link Gallery of Children’s Art’s Summer 2016 Exhibit features the work of students from each of Door County’s five districts. The exhibit, The Colors of our Lives: Door County, My Home, depicts Door County through the eyes of the children who live here, representing the things the students love about public spaces in their communities. The exhibit is on display through September. During the academic year, The Link Gallery of Children’s Art features 5-6 professionally presented exhibits. Children at various age levels from all Door County schools as well as those who are home-schooled are invited to participate. During the school year, exhibits focus on providing a window to the world and educational experiences for children who live here. Summer exhibits have themes that illuminate aspects of Door County for residents and visitors alike. The space also presents traveling exhibits featuring art created by children from other parts of the country and the world. A wide variety of themes and artistic media are explored, ranging from the natural environment, cultural traditions, historical events, to values such as trust, kindness, and generosity. The Link Gallery of Children’s Art is a collaboration of Door Community Auditorium, Friends of Gibraltar and Gibraltar Area Schools.

DOOR COMMUNITY AUDITORIUM • 2016

Hearing is Believing! Thanks to generous community support, Door Community Auditorium is the first public performing arts venue in Door County to install a hearing loop system. This emerging technology significantly improves our venue’s comfort and accessibility for our patrons with hearing loss. What are Hearing Loops? Hearing loops provide an in-ear loudspeaker that cuts out a significant amount of background noise for audience members with hearing aids or cochlear implants. A typical hearing loop system consists of a microphone, an amplifier, and a thin copper wire, usually installed around the outer edges of a room. The wire is able to pick up the sound from a microphone which creates a magnetic field that transmits the sound directly to the hearing aid. How to Use DCA’s Hearing Loops In order for the hearing loops to work properly, hearing aids must be equipped with a telecoil, or T-coil. The T-coil in the hearing aid must also be activated and turned on, which can be done with a simple flip of a switch. About two-thirds of hearing aids and all cochlear implants on the market in the U.S. are already equipped with a T-coil. This T-coil program must be activated by an audiologist. Talk to your audiologist to find out if your instruments can have both a T (no background noise pick up) and an MT program (blended micro-phone & T-coil program) for improved hearing at concerts and lectures. If you do not have a T-Coil equipped hearing aid or cochlear implant but wish to benefit from our hearing loop system, please ask for a special headset at the box office window. Donations are still needed to complete the funding for DCA’s Sound & Lighting Upgrades. If you’d like to help, please call Cari at 920.868.2728 ext. 107 Special Thanks to our Sounds Great! Campaign Major Donors: Dave & Vonnie Callsen, The Cordon Family Foundation, Dick & Anne Egan, Gibraltar Schools, Jim & Rochelle Heinz, Donald & Carol Kress, Main Street Market, Fred Marcon, The Minahan Family Fund of the Community Foundation for the Fox River Valley, North Point Association, Steve & Kaaren Northrop, and The Raibrook Foundation.
