Door Community Auditorium’s Expansion Project

“The Annex”

The original dream of DCA, manifested through the efforts of many, has made Door County a better, stronger, richer place. And now, after 30 seasons of being a conduit for magic, community dialogue, learning, and cultural exploration, we are expanding. With community support, DCA purchased the neighboring property, formerly known as Fish Creek Grill/Carlos Banditos. The property will eventually provide a home for: • Pre- and post-event receptions • Expanded accessible parking and restrooms • Business offices • A full catering kitchen for improved artist hospitality • Indoor and outdoor performance spaces for small-scale events • Music lessons for instrumental instruction not offered in the schools Located directly across Highway 42 from DCA and the southern edge of Gibraltar Schools’ campus, the recent installation of sidewalks, lighting, and an ADA compliant crosswalk complete with flashing lights and median has greatly improved passage between the two properties. The acquisition protects DCA’s business interests and preserves this corner of Fish Creek which includes DCA, Gibraltar Schools, Peninsula School of Art, Peninsula State Park, and the YMCA as a vibrant hub for arts, education, and health. As it has for 30 years, presenting high-quality national touring acts and diverse cultural programming yearround on the DCA Main Stage—in partnership with the community and Gibraltar Schools—will continue to be at the heart of our mission. This acquisition will expand our organizational capacity and improve the audience,

While plans for exactly what the space will look like, who will lead construction efforts, and the timeline are still unfolding, the space we envision will be for our community’s benefit for years to come. We invite you to join us as we embark on the second phase of this journey: collecting community feedback and gathering more financial support. Please offer your own ideas at DCAuditorium.org/expansion.

Working Concept for “The Annex”

We are looking for donors at every level to help this dream take shape. We have naming opportunities for folks who support the project financially.

PRE-SEASON EVENT

Amythyst Kiah Presented in Partnership with Write On, Door County

Friday, May 13, 7 p.m. $30 / 40 / 55 plus sales tax & facility fees Rolling Stone calls Amythyst Kiah “one of Americana’s great up-and-coming secrets.” With an unforgettable voice that’s both unfettered and exquisitely controlled, the Tennessee-bred singer/songwriter expands on the uncompromising artistry she most recently revealed as part of Our Native Daughters—an all-women-of-color supergroup whose Kiah-penned standout “Black Myself” earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best American Roots Song and won Song of the Year at the 2019 Folk Alliance International Awards. Kiah’s singing, songwriting, and guitar work are raw yet nuanced examinations of grief, alienation, and the hard-won triumph of total selfacceptance.

“Independent spirit, vast talent, and musical savvy…. dazzling.” – Pitchfork

PRE-SEASON EVENT

Sunday, June 12, 3 p.m. Free Event, Donations Encouraged New this summer… The event will be held next door to Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik at Stabbur. DCA’s annual concert event Play It Forward brings together some of Door County’s favorite musicians to showcase their prodigious talents in an evening that celebrates community and musicality. Inspired by the life and legacy of Bo Johnson, a young Sister Bay resident who died in 2012, “Play It Forward” does just that: participating musicians donate their time, and proceeds from the evening go to benefit a worthy cause. This year, donations will go to benefit Alice Mattson, an 8-year-old Door County girl undergoing treatment for leukemia.

Charley Crockett with Special Guest Vincent Neil Emerson

Wednesday, June 29, 8 p.m. $45 / 65 / 78 plus sales tax & facility fees Despite his penchant for pearl snaps and western hats, Charley Crockett isn’t an artist to be pigeon-holed. Part neo-country-western, part bluesman, Crockett is all storyteller. Sad, uplifting, hard, and sweet, complex and delicate all at once, his songs are like life itself, just like the songs’ creator: like nothing you’ve heard or seen before, a genuine Texas original. He sings them in his one-of-a-kind voice: distinctive, plaintive vocals that crack unapologetically with emotion, lines phrased around the beat like a jazz singer, expounding on personal relationships and the world beyond. Young Texas songwriter Vincent Neil Emerson will open the show. “Crockett’s sound is a vibrant kaleidoscope that constantly morphs, shifts, and melds an assortment of country soul, cajun folk, stirring blues, effortless R&B, and a multitude of other American roots music as fresh as it is familiar…rich and boundless and steeped in tradition.” – Texas Monthly

Shakey Graves

Sunday, October 2, 7 p.m. $39.50 / 49.50 / 59.50 plus sales tax & facility fees Known for a smoky, spectral fusion of blues, folk, and rock, Shakey Graves is the stage name of Texas singer, songwriter, and guitarist Alejandro Rose-Garcia. Shakey Graves began as a one-man band of epic sonic proportions: the sound emitted from Rose-Garcia’s hollow body guitar, mildly distorted amp, and a suitcase drum belying the young singer’s lean frame. He fingerpicked while keeping time with a double-pedal kick drum, hitting a snare fitted into his suitcase drum and a tambourine fashioned to its side. Now appearing with a 5-piece band, the verve and charisma of his performances have allowed the Austin-based Shakey Graves to parlay grassroots success of his homespun 2011 debut, Roll the Bones, into national visibility—he’s been going strong ever since.

All of us who visit, live, work, and play in Door County do so on lands and waterways that are the ancestral homelands, hunting and/or trading grounds of the Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Huron, Ojibwe, Ottawa, Petun and Sauk peoples and nations. We cannot undo the past, but we work today to create a welcoming space for the sharing of story and song, and in so doing, we aim to encourage ourselves and others to let the best interests of the next seven generations guide our actions.
