DOOR COMMUNITY AUDITORIUM • 2018

Welcome to Door Community Auditorium! If you checked out the lineup for DCA’s 2018 Main Stage Season, you might have the impression that we’ve got the blues. From Keb’ Mo’ (coming in June) to Buddy Guy (coming in July) to our third annual Blues & Roots Fest in November, you might think that we’ve fallen on some hard travelin’ or that our baby done left us. But nothing could be further from the truth. While worries and woes dominate the headlines, here in Door County we get frequent reminders that we are Too Blessed to Be Stressed (Paul Thorn appearing November 2nd). So in spite of life’s tribulations, We Gonna Have a Crazy Time, We Gonna Jump for Joy (Buddy Guy, July 7). Time and time again, you–our audience, donors, sponsors, and volunteers–bless us with your presence, ideas, and support. We wish to reciprocate by offering our own blessings, taken from the lyrics of some of our 2018 Main Stage Season artists. Here we go... Whether you are in town for One Night Only, (Trombone Shorty, June 14), call Door County home, or are a Weekender (Margo Price, June 15), we hope that the show you’re about to see leaves you with a smile on your face and some Good Vibrations (Beach Boys, June 9) in your soul. We encourage you to Look Around (Blues Traveler, July 17), take in the delicious fare at some Hometown Tables (Katie Dahl appearing with Dar Williams, September 17), and make some uniquely Door County memories amongst family and friends, new and old. There’s nothing like a world-class show on a gorgeous peninsula to remind you that Life Is Beautiful (Keb’ Mo’, June 21). We encourage you to Push Your Luck (and) Find Out How Much Love the World Can Hold. (Dar Williams, September 17) and to take some time to enjoy and Share the Land (The Guess Show, July 21). There’s a good chance that the Wind (Will) Take Your Troubles Away (Son Volt, August 12). Of course, you might come across a few mishaps and surprises. You might encounter Rain, Rain Beautiful Rain (Ladysmith Black Mambazo, August 3) when you wanted to go sailing or you might never want to change your watch back from Central Time (Pokey LaFarge appearing with Son Volt, August 12). Regardless, we hope you Hold Your Head Up High (Darlingside, July 10) and come away saying, “I Wouldn’t Have Missed it for the World” (Ronnie Milsap, July 28). We thank you for being here and supporting the performing arts and live music. Because If There Were No Music We Would Not Get Through (Shawn Colvin, July 30). May we see you frequently this season, and (in the words of Lone Bellow appearing December 4), May You Be Well!

Larry Thoreson Cari Lewis Executive Director President

On our cover: Margo Price (June 15), Ladysmith Black Mambazo (August 3), Ronnie Milsap (July 28 ), Buddy Guy (July 7), Shawn Colvin (July 30).

This exhibit celebrates the wonderful waters of Door County. Students from all five Door County school districts – Gibraltar, Sevastopol, Sturgeon Bay, Southern Door and Washington Island – created artwork that expresses what water in Door County means to them. Our Wonderful Water exhibit is part of Celebrate Water, a year-long series of activities to celebrate Door County’s water, understand the threats to our water, and inspire people to act and protect our water. It is an initiative of Healthy Water Door County, a fund of the Door County Community Foundation, Inc. The mission of Healthy Water Door County is to protect our community’s human, environmental,

and economic health by guarding against threats to our water. The Link Gallery of Children’s Art at Door Community Auditorium is an exhibit space dedicated to showcasing artwork by youth throughout Door County and the world beyond. The gallery is a collaboration of Friends of Gibraltar, Gibraltar Schools, and Door Community Auditorium. The gallery’s partner organizations are excited to present the fresh and imaginative artwork that comes from the hands, hearts, and minds of children. We thank the students and art teachers from all five school districts in Door County for creating and sharing their excellent work with us!

DOOR COMMUNITY AUDITORIUM • 2018

Hearing is Believing! Thanks to generous community support, Door Community Auditorium is the first public performing arts venue in Door County to install a hearing loop system. This emerging technology significantly improves our venue’s comfort and accessibility for our patrons with hearing loss. What are Hearing Loops? Hearing loops provide an in-ear loudspeaker that cuts out a significant amount of background noise for audience members with hearing aids or cochlear implants. A typical hearing loop system consists of a microphone, an amplifier, and a thin copper wire, usually installed around the outer edges of a room. The wire is able to pick up the sound from a microphone which creates a magnetic field that transmits the sound directly to the hearing aid. How to Use DCA’s Hearing Loops In order for the hearing loops to work properly, hearing aids must be equipped with a telecoil, or T-coil. The T-coil in the hearing aid must also be activated and turned on, which can be done with a simple flip of a switch. About two-thirds of hearing aids and all cochlear implants on the market in the U.S. are already equipped with a T-coil. This T-coil program must be activated by an audiologist. Talk to your audiologist to find out if your instruments can have both a T (no background noise pick up) and an MT program (blended micro-phone & T-coil program) for improved hearing at concerts and lectures. If you do not have a T-Coil equipped hearing aid or cochlear implant but wish to benefit from our hearing loop system, please ask for a special headset at the box office window. Special Thanks to our Sounds Great! Campaign Major Donors: Dave & Vonnie Callsen, The Cordon Family Foundation, Dick & Anne Egan, Gibraltar Schools, Donald & Carol Kress, Main Street Market, Fred Marcon, The Minahan Family Fund of the Community Foundation for the Fox River Valley, North Point Association, Steve & Kaaren Northrop, and The Raibrook Foundation.
