The Lone Bellow with Robert

Ellis

Tuesday, December 4, 7 p.m. $25 / $38 / $48 plus sales tax & facility fees The Lone Bellow sings what they call “Brooklyn country music”: beautiful, sincere, exquisitely harmonized folk-pop songs. With their belting, soulful voices, any of the three members of the Lone Bellow (Zach Williams, Kanene Donehey Pipkin, and Brian Elmquist) would make a formidable solo act. Together, the Brooklyn-based indie-folk trio multiplies that talent, exploring distant galaxies of harmony and countermelody. Acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin and plenty of foot stomping form a roiling undercurrent for the band’s earnest, tempestuous and ecstatic songs. No smoke and mirrors here, just soaring, heartfelt vocal performances. Houston-based singer-songwriter and guitarist, Robert Ellis has toured with Alabama Shakes, Old Crow Medicine Show, and the Old 97’s. Blending country, pop, and jazz, Ellis is a NPR and Folk Alley favorite. PRESENTING SPONSOR

Play It Forward Thursday, December 27, 2018, 7 p.m. Free-will Donations Encouraged An annual concert event now in its sixth year, Play It Forward brings together some of Door County’s best-loved musicians for an evening of seasonal music that is both festive and reflective. Inspired by the life and legacy of Bo Johnson, a young Sister Bay resident who died in 2012, “Play It Forward” does just that: participating musicians donate their time, and proceeds from the evening go to benefit a worthy cause. Play it Forward is an evening that celebrates the warmth and light of the holiday season. This year’s recipient is The Go Bo Foundation. The Go Bo Foundation brings hope to children with life-threatening medical conditions by funding research, supporting treatment, and helping their families during times of financial need.

Hamiltunes Sing-a-long Saturday, January 19, 7 p.m. Free Event, Free-will Donations Accepted We invite you to join us “in the room where it happens” for a sing-along to the cast album of “Hamilton, the Broadway Musical.” Costumes are encouraged. Fans who are interested in leading the singing from the stage can email their top three choices of roles and songs to production@ dcauditorium.org with the subject “Roles in Hamilton.” The singalong is open to all ages, but because of profanity used in the musical, those under 14 should be accompanied by an adult. DOOR COUNTY TALKS Presented by Door Community Auditorium & The Door County Civility Project

Professor Alison Staudinger: Civility and the Public Sphere Saturday, January 26, 10 a.m. Free Event, Free-will Donations Accepted Come explore both the promise and the perils of deliberation and discourse for civic renewal. Based on a course she offered on the same theme, Staudinger’s active-learning workshop and presentation will lay out some of the core mechanisms through which “talking” has been turned into political action or used to build community, (for example: deliberative dialogues, participatory budgeting, citizen juries, consciousness-raising circles) with reference to theorists of the “public sphere.” Along with these examples, the talk will feature both practical tips for talking politics across difference, and critiques of the possibility of such a discussion. For example, we’ll practice deep listening—but also ask whether civility can itself be weaponized to exclude certain viewpoints from a conversation.

WINTER WATER FEST AT DCA

Third Coast Percussion Presents Paddle to the Sea Friday, February 1, 7 p.m.

$25 / $38 / $48 plus sales tax & facility fees The classic children’s book and Academy Award-nominated film, Paddle to the Sea, is the focus of a new project that looks at our relationship to the bodies of water that connect our lives. Third Coast Percussion composed a new score to be performed live with the film, which tells the story of a Native Canadian boy who carves a wooden figure called Paddleto-the-Sea and sets him on a journey through all five Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River, and finally to the Atlantic Ocean. Existing works inspired by impressions of water and the natural world will weave in and out of the original film and new music, including composers Philip Glass and Jacob Druckman and the traditional music of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. The performance will flow together as a seamless whole, with Third Coast Percussion using the existing music as a jumping-off point for the new music they compose. Plus… DCA is pleased to offer student matinee performances of Put Me Back in the Water (an abbreviated version of Paddle to the Sea) and WAVES: An Interactive Presentation and Performance Exploring the Science Behind Sound. Interested school and homeschool groups are advised to contact the DCA Box Office for details. We thank Jeff Olson for giving Gibraltar 2nd Graders their very own ornamental wooden boat and a carving demonstration. The boats, hand-painted by the children, will be featured on DCA’s Christmas tree in the Fireside Lobby, mid- to late-December.

DOOR COUNTY TALKS Presented by Door Community Auditorium & The Door County Civility Project

Dr. Roger Kuhns: Healthy Waters and Navigating Political Shoals

Saturday, February 2, 10 a.m. Free Event, Free-will Donations Accepted

Water. It is part of every aspect of our civilization. How do we protect it and use it wisely? What are the risks it faces? What is the science saying? What are our policies? In exploring these questions we can guide sound, science-led policy that ensures healthy water for generations to come. Most important in the short term is establishing a respectful dialogue. This means listening, and looking far forward with our solutions, not at those bringing short term gain while exacerbating long-term dilemmas. The connectivity of water and people strengthens our communities toward a sustainable society.

Gurney, coming to DCA for just one performance. “Love Letters” centers on the separate but entwined lives of two pen pals, who through 50 years of letter-writing share with one another their hopes, ambitions, disappointments, victories, defeats, and dreams. Though the play has been performed thousands of times since it premiered in 1988, Baxter and Gross’s deep, long-running connection makes this production particularly strong and resonant.

We Shall Overcome Tuesday, February 19, 7 p.m. $25 / $38 / $48 plus sales tax & facility fees

Inspired by the words and action of Martin Luther King, “We Shall Overcome” showcases repertoire from the AfricanAmerican music traditions that electrified generations of civil rights activists, interwoven with spoken word from Dr. King’s recorded speeches. Producer and Musical Director Damien Sneed has collaborated on major original works with Wynton Marsalis, accompanied Jessye Norman, and toured extensively with Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and the Clark Sisters. In “We Shall Overcome,” Sneed – along with 6-10 singers and instrumentalists – weaves together a living lineage of music that includes gospel, classical, jazz, Broadway, and spirituals, acknowledging influences as diverse as Aretha Franklin, Wynton Marsalis, Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder, and Nina Simone. Plus… DCA is pleased to offer student matinee performances of We Shall Overcome and Jazz for Young Audiences. Interested school and homeschool groups are advised to contact the DCA Box Office for details.

FIRESIDE COFFEEHOUSE CONCERT

Matthew Burress Official Door County Release of Debut Solo Album, “The Fountain”

Saturday, February 23, 7 p.m. Limited Seating Available, Tickets $17.50 plus sales tax & facility fees

After years of playing genres spanning from punk to dance, pop to jazz, it was practicality that shifted Burress’ writing and playing style to folk and singer/songwriter (an acoustic guitar is much lighter than a keyboard rig). Focusing on writing lyrics and performing with guitar, while a departure from his piano roots, has led to a richer more story-driven style.

DOOR COUNTY TALKS Presented by Door Community Auditorium & The Door County Civility Project

Dr. Jason Cowell: FREE: Developing Fairness, Respect, Empathy, and Equality in Children

Saturday, March 2, 10 a.m.

Free Event, Free-will Donations Accepted Calls for empathy, fairness, and morality are frequently invoked and often misunderstood. We are confronted with the notion that understanding the plight of others, or even feeling concern for the state of another will automatically mean that we will act more morally towards them. However, a growing body of research from child psychology and neuroscience suggests that these are relatively separate processes. In this talk, I will discuss the neural, cultural, and behavioral development of morality and empathy in children, adolescents, and adults.
