Distractions... If there’s one thing I learned really quickly about riding with my husband, it was not to make assumptions. We spend so much time in cages, we rarely think about our actions in them. We sit up, lean back, wriggle, sleep, eat, read. What we do rarely has any effect on the driver, so long as we stay in our own space. That all changes on the back of a bike. Everything you do has an effect on the driver. EVERYTHING. I was talking with a friend in church a few weeks ago. She shared with me that she had only ridden with her husband once. At the first turn, she leaned out instead of in, and she said she nearly killed them. We didn’t have time for her to elaborate, but whatever happened was enough to convince her to never ride again. Being a passenger on my husband’s bike has taught me that I need to keep my motion to a minimum. Even the smallest movements that I make, unless absolutely necessary, are not a good idea. In fact, they can be a really BAD idea. Aside from the fact that it lessens my own enjoyment of the ride, it makes my husband work harder. If I’m constantly moving, he’s constantly having to compensate for those movements. Also, it’s distracting to him — and distractions while riding are accidents waiting to happen. Distractions in a cage are usually just annoying. Distractions on a bike are dangerous and can change — or even take — your life in the blink of an eye. I also know that if I’m constantly moving around behind my husband, there’s a chance that he’s going to eventually ask me, “Do you want to ride with me, or should I take you home?”

10

Sometimes life can feel like that, too: one big ball of distractions. Our calendars fill up as fast as our gas tanks empty out. We rush from one appointment to another, one function to another, and we’re never really present at any of them. We spend our time furtively glancing at our watch and planning our route to (or our agenda for) the next event, the next appointment, the next meeting. We allow these distractions to skew our priorities. We begin living from a position of “If it’s not on fire, it’s not important” without realizing that our very souls are feeling the heat of the flame. Perhaps it begins slowly. A missed day in reading the Bible here. Skipping church one time there. Falling into bed with no thought of thanks to God. Slowly but surely, our life grows, but our souls shrink. Story & Photos:

Leslie Harder

We all know the dire consequences to our physical life of distraction while riding. Why do we miss those same danger signs of distraction in our spiritual life? Why does it often take a “wrecked” soul before we realize we’ve missed a turn or hit some debris that could have been avoided…if we had just paid attention. Don’t let the distractions of this temporal life keep you from the most important thing in your eternal life: your relationship with God. The distractions of this life will end when you leave this earth, but your relationship with God is eternal.

What type of “eternal” is it for you? Eternal life, forever in the presence of your heavenly Father? Or eternal death, separated forever from Him and all He wants to give you? Which have you chosen? Because there is a choice. Either one or the other. There’s no middle road. There’s the challenging road that leads to God, or the easy road that leads to hell. That’s it. That’s all there is. Then these [unbelieving people] will go away into eternal (unending) punishment, but those who are righteous and in right standing with God [will go, by His remarkable grace] into eternal (unending) life. Matthew 25:46 AMP God never sends anyone to hell. He merely puts the roads before us. WE choose which one we take. …choose this day whom you will serve… Joshua 24:15 ESV What blessing to have a Creator who loves us and wants to have a relationship with us! He doesn’t expect us to “clean up” before we come to Him. Remember the story of the prodigal son? That son came from a job feeding pigs. This is farm country. Ever passed a pig farm? If you have, your nose would tell you immediately. That son was covered in the stench of the way he had lived. But his father RAN to meet him! And embraced him! In fact, his father had been watching for him even before the son came home.

FACEBOOK.COM/BEHINDBARZMAG

God is watching for you, too. He’s waiting for you, too. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done or the mark it’s left on you. God still loves you. He still wants you to come home. Come home.

“So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” Luke 15:20 NIV

Flying Iron HOG Chapter 5119 HOG ROCKY MOUNT, NC

a lot of fun together. You do not have to ride alone.

A chapter is not a club you join so you can wear another patch. It is the reason a Sunday afternoon that would have been a solo loop turns into a ride with people who already know which diner still pours a decent cup after the kitchen closes, and who will wait at the next light if your Ultra starts running hot.

Chapter members share a passion for riding, and much of what they do is built to support it. Riding events range from group rides that can be a short day or a long one to a weekend trip. The chapter is dedicated to promoting a positive image of motorcycling and to enjoyment of the sport on nearly every

That is the practical promise of the Harley Owners Group. HOG began in 1983 as Harley-Davidson’s own owners’ organization, tied to the dealership rather than to an independent club. A national membership gets a rider the handbook, the magazine, event access, and the roadside and touring perks that come with the brand. A local chapter is where that membership becomes a calendar. The sponsoring dealer provides the roof, the meeting space, and the legitimacy. The members supply the rides. Chapters exist to put Harley riders in the same place at the same time, on purpose. Group rides run from a short afternoon out to a full day or a weekend. Social nights fill the gaps. Charity rides and community events give the patch a public face. Patriotic runs, dealership open houses, and the occasional rally trip sit on the same schedule as a breakfast ride that ends before noon. The point is not a single kind of riding. It is that someone else is already planning the next one. Flying Iron H.O.G. Chapter 5119, sponsored by Flying Iron HarleyDavidson in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, is that idea in one backyard. Lifelong friendships there started with a common bond: the love of motorcycles, and especially of those who ride a Harley-Davidson. People meet at a chapter function, and the rest is history. It comes down to meeting new people, riding, eating, camaraderie, and having

level: charity fundraising, community-betterment work, patriotic runs, and rides that are strictly for fun. Members come from all walks of life, blue collar and white collar, and they wear Harley black and orange with pride. The opportunities are open-ended. A member can bring the next activity idea, and the calendar already stays full of riding and social events through the year. Keeping the Harley Owners Group motto alive, the chapter is committed to riding and having fun.

For many members the chapter has become a second family, held together by the simple bond of motorcycling. That pattern repeats at chapters across the country, with local flavor instead of a script. Some lean hard into long-distance touring. Some are built around charity miles and toy runs. Some are mostly breakfast, a loop, and the parking-lot debrief. What they share is structure without the overhead of an independent club: a dealer sponsor, elected officers, a ride calendar, and a standing invitation to anyone who owns a Harley and would rather not plan every mile alone. What a chapter offers is less a benefits list than a change in how the bike gets used. A new rider gets routes already vetted and people who will not leave them at a fuel stop. A longtime owner gets company on roads they have ridden for years. A rider passing through gets a meeting they can sit in on and a group they can join for a day. The patch, the pin, and the chapter number are the visible part. The useful part is the phone number of someone who will ride on Tuesday. Chapter 5119 wants to meet the next one soon.

Thanks to the sponsoring dealer, meetings are held at Flying Iron in Rocky Mount on the first Sunday of the month at 2:30 p.m., unless that Sunday falls on a holiday, in which case the meeting moves to the following Sunday. The dealership website helps tell the story. It is not complete until the next rider shows up. The door is wider than a membership card. A chapter member from another dealer is welcome. A current or former member gets a warm welcome back. Someone who is only curious can sit in on the next meeting; there is nothing to hide. Bring a friend if that makes the first visit easier. Join a ride as a guest and bring that friend along.

Nine Ways to Survive the Motorcycle Offseason 2. Improve the Motorcycle—Without the Rush

With no pressure to ride tomorrow morning, you can plan upgrades the right way. Consider better lighting, a new seat, heated grips, a windscreen, or an exhaust change. Research fitment, cost, and installation before ordering. A careful winter project is far better than losing a sunny weekend to a part that does not fit. For many of us, winter brings one painful reality: the motorcycle is parked, the roads are cold, and the next real ride feels much too far away. Still, storing the bike does not mean putting your entire motorcycling life on ice. The offseason is the perfect time to catch up, make plans, and handle the jobs that get ignored when the weather is good. Put a few winter evenings to work and, when spring finally arrives, you can ride instead of scramble.

1. Give Your Riding Gear Some Attention

Start with the basics: clean and condition your helmet liner, jacket, gloves, and boots. Check every item for wear, damage, or age—the flaws we overlook in July are much easier to face in January. Replace anything that no longer protects as intended, and research upgrades while offseason prices are often easier on the wallet.

20

3. Surf the Web— the Motorcycle Version

Yes, this counts as productivity. Browse motorcycle sites, join forums or rider groups, and see what other people are building, fixing, and riding. You will find useful tips, fresh inspiration, and probably a few wonderfully bad ideas.

4. Watch Motorcycle Movies and Shows

Sometimes you just need a reminder of why you ride. A good motorcycle movie or series can keep the passion alive, inspire a future trip, and make a long winter night pass a little faster. It is not saddle time, but it is better than staring at the covered bike in the garage.

5. Pick Out Your Next Motorcycle

Let’s be honest—you are already doing this. Browse new and used bikes, compare specifications, read reviews, and dream responsibly. Your current motorcycle—and your significant other—do not need to know..

6. Perform a Full T-CLOCS Inspection

If your inspection routine slipped during riding season, winter is the time to catch up. Work through T-CLOCS: Tires and wheels, Controls, Lights and electrics, Oil and other fluids, Chassis, and Stands. Finding a problem now gives you time to address it before that first perfect spring day.

7. Get Back into Riding Shape

Motorcycles do not care if you skipped leg day—but your body does. Light strength training, core work, stretching, and balance exercises can make the return to the saddle more comfortable. Start sensibly and build consistency; the goal is to enjoy the ride, not spend spring recovering from winter.

8. Plan Your Next Rides

Winter is planning season. Choose the rallies you want to attend, the destinations you have always wanted to visit, and the roads still sitting on your bucket list. Sketch out routes, fuel stops, lodging, and backup options now. Good rides often begin months before the engine starts.

9. Sit…and Wait

Eventually, you have cleaned the gear, inspected the bike, planned the rides, watched the movies, and checked the forecast more times than you will admit. So you wait. You look out the window. You sigh. And you remind yourself that winter will not last forever. Spring is coming—and when it does, you will be ready.

Facebook: BehindBarzMag

Your bike may be hibernating, but your riding life doesn’t have to. Ready When the Roads Are

Winter hibernation does not have to mean wasted time. Use the offseason well, and the first warm day will not catch you scrambling. The bike will be ready, your plans will be made, and all that will remain is to point the front wheel toward the open road. Until then… WINTER SUCKS. I just want to ride.

Carrie Caudill Nebraska

Livin' The LIFE

My name is Carrie Caudill , and I ride with both the Combat Veteran

Motorcycle Association (CVMA) and Stilettos on Steel. My own motorcycle journey is fairly recent, but my love of riding goes back much further. Growing up, my younger sister, Annette, and I both rode with our dad. He always had motorcycles, and we loved the freedom they provided. When we weren’t riding with him, we found that same sense of freedom on horseback. As adults, our paths took different directions. Annette continued riding motorcycles, starting on a 250 and eventually moving up to the bikes she owned later in life. I chose horses instead. From time to time, I would joke about gas prices and talk about buying a scooter to ride around town. Dad and Annette always encouraged me to get a motorcycle, but I kept putting the idea on the back burner. On September 7, 2024, Annette took her own life. Her death devastated me. In the aftermath, I took a hard look at my own life and realized I didn’t want to continue living unhappily. I left a home I shared with an emotionally abusive roommate and moved into an apartment of my own. We held Annette’s memorial service on September 21, 2024. It was a beautiful celebration of her life, attended by many of her friends and fellow bikers. It was there that I met the man who would later become my husband. We were married on May 25, 2025, but I’m getting a little ahead of myself. At the time of her passing, Annette owned two motorcycles: a Yamaha VStar 650 and a Yamaha VStar 1300. Dad wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with them. I told him that if he ever decided to part with either bike, I wanted them. He agreed, and we left the conversation at that. Fast forward to July 2025. I brought both bikes home, completed my MSF course, and officially began my riding journey. Today, I ride Phoenix, and I cherish the freedom she gives me. I value the friendships and camaraderie I’ve found within the motorcycle community, and sometimes, when I’m out on the open road, I can almost hear Annette talking to me as we ride together. What began as a loss has become a new chapter, one that honors my sister’s memory and reminds me to embrace life, freedom, and the connections that matter most.

Riding around these parts, one can ride all year round. November and December around here can be warm at times. I can remember 18 years ago I found myself mowing our grass on December 20th! Leathers will keep the wind off your bones when you layer up so don’t throw that leather over a T-shirt, unless you are one of the fortunate ladies experiencing menopause, ... Sorry ladies. Me personally, I don’t like to wear a leather jacket when I’m not riding, if I’m standing anywhere my sleeves are too long, leather motorcycle jackets sleeves are cut long for any size jacket so that when you sit down on a motorcycle and reach for the behind barz your sleeves don’t ride up to your elbows.

Where is this ride taking us ? It’s toward a narrow way, not a narrow way in which no one cannot fit through but a way inwhich to follow a direction, a direction sign that says Grace. Hello to my happy people! Hey folks, I’ve been busier than a five legged jack rabbit. Went off and did some boiler training. It’s intriguing to me, boilers that is. It’s a 21 ton pressure cooker. 500 TPH blasting away with 350 degree water at 110 psi. Yes Sirrrrr! I’ve gotten quite fond of learning these beasts. My Grandpa was also fascinated with steam. Boilers, steam engines, you name it. The man loved mechanics. He deeply enjoyed knowing the methods and the engineering behind it. He was a car guy so its to be expected. He worked at Massey Motor Co. for over 55 years as a master mechanic. The man knew cars, he knew trucks, and he knew motorcycles. He had an Indian many many moons ago. Fred Taylor was born in 1924 so I don’t know the year but if I was to guess I’d say probably a 1950s model. I wish they had camera phones back then. He spoke of it but not in too much depth. He was more concerned with my safety, so he only told me the bad stories of having a motorcycle. HAHAHA! Love you, too, Grandpa!

But yeah, boiler school and then having to deal with work place drama. Lord the people who come and go in our lives. Some you want the bond to last forever, and others you just wish you never met at all. People are nuts man. When I was a kid, I seriously believed all adults had their shit together. Like, I was the kid so the adults had to be smarter, right? Man...I did not realize there’s so many mentally unstable adults out there. They walk upright and talk, but something in that peanut...one side might be breathing and walking but the other side of that peanut, it has a worm in it.

It was great seeing everyone, and it was like, life was back to normal. We remembered Daytona, and Smokie Joe. Noggin even showed up with Smokie’s old sled. It was fantastic, Im sure our brothers were looking down at USS and were proud.

HAHAHA. Moving on...

We started at that store and double rode the lane as we rode deep in to Pink Hill, then up 111 to Lagrange and we ended it at Noggins Tavern. It was a great and safe ride. We all hung around til each one of USS eventually rode off to our lives.

In the motorcycle world, me and the brothers from the club oh let me say... The club is shutdown. It’s not back up and running. But the brotherhood is still alive and well. Anyway the brothers from the club had our Fallen brothers ride this past weekend. On October the 3rd. Although the club is shutdown, we’ve not forgotten our allegiance and obligations to our brothers who are no longer here. We are more than a patch, we are a family. I dig that about USS. Yeah, so we all met up and man, it was like the good old days. The sky held back the rain that day. No sun, just cloudy but the support came rolling in. We met at the same spot where we always have. It’s bitter sweet, actually. I mean, we are there to remember our brothers, but at the same time we celebrate life man. Each one of USS seems to bring what one remembers of that time when that brother was alive. Some remember to drink one red snapper, which is a cold beer. Some of you know the brand. Some just talk or whatever. This time it was different but the same. We showed up with no cutts, no skulls, no patches. Just brothers.

We made our ride from The Lighthouse which is where the tragic event occurred for Daytona. The crossroad where Daytona was waiting for the light and some heavily intoxicated individuals hit Daytona from the back. They were traveling at a 100+ mph. So, I pray our brother never felt a thing.

It’s a double edge sword. I say that because, I’m going to look forward to this ride every year until I’m riding a chromed out chariot being pulled by some heavenly sounding V-twins on the streets of heaven. Yeah, this is a forever ride. Til the end. Til the last real Son. That’s how it’s going to go brothers and sisters. But ain’t that the biker way? That’s the meaning of a righteous brotherhood. We’ve had that compliment given to USS many times from our fellow brothers and sisters of different clubs. Speaking of different clubs, I want to give a thanks and much love for the show of support. Not just friends and family but the other long lasting friendships we’ve had with Bikers for Christ and Definant Spirits and our long time brothers of Tuchahoe.

mer... Oh and since I mentioned Tuchahoe, one of our brothers has started a new chapter of his biker life with our fellow brotherhood. I want to say this...I’m very happy for you All-in. I’ve loved and respected you always. I hope your next chapter is a save but wonderful experience brother. Tuch, Ya’ll got a good man coming at ya. Well guys, I’ve dumped my spill for this article. I want to share some pictures of our ride, I hope you enjoy. So stay safe and I’ll chat with ya’ll again next time. 2Timer

BLUE KNIGHTS NC One Day of Riding. A Year of Giving. Blue Knights NC The final numbers are in from the 5th Annual MME, and once again the motorcycle community showed what can happen when people come together for a purpose. With 90 participants, the event raised $8,000, split evenly between Whole Vet and Blue Knights NC Chapter II, giving each organization $4,000 to continue its work throughout the year.

The MME happens one day a year. But what it allows NC II to do happens all year long. What our riders, sponsors, volunteers, law-enforcement agencies, businesses and supporters made possible that day continues long after the motorcycles are parked.

story & photos: Samantha Raybon

And that’s what the Blue Knights are supposed to be about.

For NC II, that $4,000 is about much more than one successful motorcycle ride. It helps us support law-enforcement officers injured in the line of duty and families of fallen officers, as well as the Apex Police Department Explorer Program and U.S. Naval Sea Cadets Raleigh Battalion. It supports Kids & Hockey, giving local children and families the opportunity to experience a Carolina Hurricanes game, complete with great seats, parking, food and gifts. And sometimes our contribution isn’t a check — it’s motorcycles and manpower. Each year, NC II provides motorcycle safety escorts for Le Tour de Femme, an annual women’s cycling event raising money and awareness for cancer-related causes. This year, 10 NC II members volunteered, with Blue Knights providing motorcycle safety support throughout the event and helping keep cyclists safe on all of the routes from start to finish. At Christmas, our support continues through Shop with a Cop, Angel Tree, and visits to children in the hospital with gifts, while also recognizing the nurses and staff caring for them. Throughout the year, NC II supports veteran causes, charity rides, community events and families who simply need someone to show up. Sometimes we raise money. Sometimes we provide an escort. Sometimes we stand beside a family during one of the hardest days of their lives.
