THE SELF DISCRIMINATION OF MOTORCYCLIST’S Often, when a straight laced citizen see’s a person on a motorcycle (Doesn’t matter what kind of Motorcycle) dressed all in leather they think, “ that person is a criminal!” Why? Because of Hollywood and the media. It’s very simple Bad Bikers sell, Good Bikers don’t !!!

Now that same Biker, when he see’s another Biker with a patch on his back, say something like HOG, will Sometimes think they are Criminals. Some HOG guys, when they see a Member of a one piece patch Club Like an AMA group will think them to be Criminals.

Sometimes the AMA Guy will think members of Outlaw Clubs and 1% Clubs to be Criminals. I’m not asking Why do we do this to each other, I already know why. I just wonder why it is so easy to believe by those in the life.

I have been in the Biker world my whole life and it makes me mad when I see and hear Bikers say Negative things against each other. I was at a Charity event a few years back and a local paper was there interviewing Bikers. One of the People there was from an AMA Club and said to the reporter “We are the good Guys.

I’m still wondering who the Bad guys are? I have met Bikers from Independent to 1%er and I have yet to meet any of these so called bad guys!!!

I treat people with respect and people treat me with respect. When I was a kid my father who is a Biker let me in on a little Biker world Secret “Act like an A**hole and you will be treated like an A**hole”.

Since the Government has started slowly taking away the rights of all motorcyclists, as well as Americans in General, I’ve begun to see all who ride coming together to fight against it! There will always be Negative People out there, spewing their negative poison about Biker Groups. They will be there, Fear mongering about why you should not associate with this group or that Group. Outlaw LJ James Club Does NOT mean Criminal Organization!!! But that’s another Article.

It makes me sick when I see these posers who look like Bikers, pretend to be Bikers, but only have negative things to say about the Motorcycle world. They are the real problem!

I go almost every weekend to some Charity event or another put on by a Biker Group or Club. It’s a fact that as a Group, Bikers are among the most charitable people in the world.

When I read in some paper or online something by some know nothing reporter, saying something to the effect that “Biker groups only do these events because its good Public Relations for their image”, it kills me.

Most of the press we get, with the exception of local Biker Magazines, is Negative. We make sure 10,000 Kids have toys for the Holidays and there is some 3 page report in the paper spewing out all sorts of unfounded accusations. We do good and We come out looking bad. If we where really concerned with our image and not helping out those around us we wouldn’t do any events at all!

If you follow the Motorcycle Club trials like I do, you see that most of the cases are dropped because of lack of evidence. Of course, the arrest of the MC and the incredibly horrific tails of Murder, Mayhem, Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll have been on the nightly news and on the front page of every paper for weeks! You always read about the Clubs being proven innocent or a case dropped in a small article on the last page, if at all.

Has there ever been any apologies for these “Witch Hunts” that cause pain, embarrassment and humiliation to the Club Members and their families or the assassination of a Club Members character? If so, I’ve never heard them.

Any time you see a News report on TV where the Government has proven some group was a criminal organization, those people are always wearing suits and ties!!!

Therefore I say, Leather Vest = Innocent!!!

Tuscarora Spring Thaw Party Story & photos: Johnny King The cool temperatures and gusty winds didn’t stop friends of the Tuscarora MC from coming out for the Clubs Spring Thaw Party, on March 27th. As the gates opened at 12 pm the start of the 2010 parties began. Everyone looks forward to the Tuscarora’s parties for they are ready for anything and everyone.

Early arrivals got a chance to sample the famous beef stew at 1pm. Cooked in a big black cauldron with lots of potatoes and onions, this stew is out of this world, especially on a cold day. While their guests were enjoying the beef stew, Hurricane was checking on the pig for the main course at 7pm. As the sun started to set the line started forming for the pig and all the great sides offered to feed the growing crowd.

Those arriving late managed to get a bite to eat before 5 Speed began playing at 8pm. With the Clubhouse packed the rest of the party goers were outside huddled around one of the burn barrels, the bon fire, or wood fireplace trying to steal whatever warmth they could, for when the sun went down so did the temperature. But as the temperature dropped more people arrived. Before the night was over members from: Sothern Iron, Southern Sin, Frog Level, Freedom Riders, Brotherhood, CBA, Veterans, Dragon Slayers, Ghost Riders, Desperados, Lowriders, and several independents, had made it to the Clubhouse. There were several familiar faces and even more new faces there that night, but all left knowing they would be back for the next party the guys had. The members of Tuscarora MC throw an awesome party, whether it is cold, raining, or hot outside, it is remembered by all that come out to enjoy it. So keep your eye out for the next one. You haven’t been to a good get together until you experience one at the Tuscarora Clubhouse Recently some big hearted folks got together and cooked up some Brunswick Stew to raise money for the Nash County Relay For Life. The Relay team calls themselves, “Huntin’ For A Cure”.

They sold 430 quarts of stew. That’s a lot of taters...over 250 lbs. to be exact! They have had this event several times and it is always a huge success! “Huntin’ For A Cure” would like to thank Rocky Mount area Food Lions, Save A Lot, Lowe’s Foods of Spring Hope, Piggly Wiggly of Bailey, Piggly Wiggly on Thomas St. in Rocky Mount, U.S. Foods, Rocky Mount HD Shop and a special thanks to all our family and friends who helped make this a very successful event.

They also sold over 450 funnel cakes at the Relay For Life in Nash County on April 23rd and 24th.

The Loss of a Brother…

In the early morning hours of March 28th, two brothers from the Southern Iron MC stopped in Fremont to warm up from the cold of the ride that night. After knocking the chill off, they headed back out on the road, each going to different destinations. Sideby-side they rode till they had to part ways, throwing their hands up to say so long, till tomorrow; neither knowing one would never make it to his destination.

While riding down Hwy 222, verging onto Crumpler Rd. in Kenly, Garry “Crump” Crumpler was heading home, but he never made it to the home he intended. A minivan crossed the centerline, placing him and Crump in the same lane. It happened so quickly that neither had a chance to brake or swerve. Crump’s father could hear the sound of his sons’ bike coming down the road, then silence!

The bike exploded on impact from the head on collision with parts of the bike being thrown 100 ft away. By 6am calls started going out to notify family, friends, brothers, and other Clubs of the early morning tragedy. Garry Kent “CRUMP” Crumpler had gone HOME.

Garry “CRUMP” Crumpler After hearing of the accident and the tragic outcome, members of Southern Iron MC converged on the Wilson Clubhouse, while other members went to console Crump’s parents and family. The news spread quickly and by noon, friends of Southern Iron began arriving at the Clubhouse to pay their respects to the Club for the loss of their brother.

As the days after the accident passed by, more information began surfacing about the tragedy.

The colors that Crump had been wearing that night were returned to the Club torn and battered. So he would have them for his final ride, Ricky Tant, Founder and State President of Southern Iron MC and the Club had them repaired and they were put on him for his final Home. Lining up to leave took a few minutes for there were roughly 75 bikers riding to Kenly to tell their friend ‘Goodbye’. Arriving at noon in Kenly we all talked, hugged, and cried for the loss of a good friend and brother.

While waiting for the service to begin at 1pm, bikes rolled in from all areas of Eastern North Carolina. Upon the start of the service approximately 100 bikes filled the parking lot of the Funeral Home, with members from the: Hells Angels, Desperados, Southern Sin, Ghost Riders, Tuscarora, Misplaced Souls, Frog Level, Christian Motorcycle Ass., Guardians of the Cross, and Bikers for Christ; as well as, many independents. The Chapel filled up quickly and overflowed into the hallway, with several electing to stay outside.

The service started with Crump’s sister saying a few words about her big brother. She recalled that he was always late. Although they had thought of having the service for him at 10am they allowed for his lateness and changed it to 1pm to assure him being on time. Crump always believed in doing his best in whatever he did not matter how long it took, it would be done right the first time. He had a smile on his face at all times and was always telling jokes.

One she remembered was of the little duck: A little duck waddled into a bar and asked the bartender if he sold crackers. The bartender replied, ‘No, they didn’t sell crackers”, so the little duck left. On the second night the little duck waddled back in and again asked if they sold crackers. Once again the bartender replied, “No”. On the third night the duck waddled back into the bar and again asked if they sold crackers. The bartender said, “No, I told you each time for the past 2 nights we didn’t and if you come back in again and asked I will staple your bill to the floor!” The little duck shivers at the thought and waddled out. The next night the duck came back in again and waddled up to the bar looking at the bartender the duck asked, “Do you have any staples?” The bartender replied, “No”. So the duck said, “Then do you have any Crackers?”

With a giggle from the occupants she said wherever Crump was she was assured that there would be laughter and smiles. As she finished she said, “Although he was always late, Crump passed away way too early.”

As she left, the Rev. Elsie Briley stood up and said a few words about Crump, before Pastor Thumper Dixon stood up and began the service stating that he was assured that Crump was in heaven riding his new bike mad of heavens gold. Crump’s soul shines through his actions and what he did when he was here with us. Although Crump passed from a terrible tragedy, he still had his last ride to go. While giving his sermon he broke down the differences between bikers and everyone else. After the service was finished all headed outside to begin the last ride for their friend, and as in true biker fashion and respect to their brother of the open road the bikers fell in behind the family in the procession to Crump’s final resting place. It was site to be seen and a site that stopped those on the street to see approximately 125 bikes side-by-side riding without helmets in respect for their loss friend and brother.

Rev. Briley and Pastor Thumper once again spoke at the cemetery, assuring all that although Crump was no longer with us he was still a biker and a friend to all. Pastor Thumper continues by saying, everyone should have respect for a fallen biker for he is our brother and a part of our family. Requesting for all to be Crump like and smile. With those words the mourners became silent as a Marine in the distance played ‘Taps’ on his bugle. Immediately following 2 Marines that had been standing at the head of the casket removed the American flag and proceeded to fold the flag for presentation to the family. “With great admiration and a grateful nation we present you with this flag,” as they handed the folded flag to Crump’s mother. Thumper then looked at Southern Iron member, Chris Gates, who raised his hand and in the distance you could hear the sound of a Harley cranking up, the sound of the pipes revving up and the roaring of the motor going down the road.

Thumper said, “Crump’s life, love and spirit still rides

in the sound of the bike. After the burial at the Kenly Cemetery everyone attending was invited back to the Wilson Southern Iron Clubhouse to help the Club remember, mourn, and celebrate the life of their brother ‘Crump’. The get together lasted throughout the night and into the next day.

Garry ‘Crump’ Crumpler was a son, a big brother, a former Marine, biker and a proud member of the Southern Iron MC. He held the title of Enforcer for the Wilson Chapter and most recently, in the past week, had been named Vice President of the new Chapter of Southern Iron in Wayne County. He was well liked by all that came into contact with him and was smiling at all times with a pair of sunglasses on his head. Crump will remain in our hearts and memories until we too go home to heaven’s gate. One thing we can all count on is that when we do get to those Pearly Gates we will be sure to find Crump there waiting for us with a big smile on his face and welcoming us. Until that time comes whenever you are out on the road riding and stopped at a light or stop sign, close your eyes and think of Crump.

When you open your eyes again look beside you and picture him there beside you, because although he is gone in body his SPIRIT rides with each and everyone one of us, every time we crank our bikes and roar down the road.

Then Southern Iron M/C gave an invitation to all to come out to their clubhouse afterwards and share memories of their brother “Crump”. Oh, yes, even at the clubhouse, all colors and different clubs were welcomed and treated with respect.

The coolest thing I saw was when the other pastor, Mrs. Elsie Briley, who is a Precious Lady and a Pentecostal preacher, was sitting at a table with her husband next to the bar drinking a coke. When I walked in, she said Pastor Thumper I like this these guys are so sweet. Like it or not this shows these guys and gals have and show respect to all people at all times.

This is an affair that I wish many churches could see and gain knowledge from. We are real people and true to each other and we are called bikers. We know when, where, and how to treat people that are not in our club, or ride group and may have different rules. It is called respect and trust that is within a fellowship.

My prayers are to all the bikers to share and to show what and how a human should be treated. It is also my prayer that this will get to some churches in this area and they may learn from it. I must also pray that our biker brothers and sisters will come to know Jesus Christ and know of what Church is about, not religion; but a church body, because religion sucks! I want all to know about a relationship with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords...His name is Jesus Christ.

Sean and the guys from C&C Performance Cycles of Raleigh were on hand with some of their custom builds. They also did a few burn-outs before the evening was over. VP and the guys from CycleMax of Wilson, were handing out CycleMax gift cards throughout the night. Randy from Open Road Biker Gear of Goldsboro was set up with lots of his riding gear and merchandise from the store. Ray of Thumpers Performance Parts from Bath was giving demos of spark plug index washers and how they increase your motorcycles horsepower, torque and mileage. Shannon and Michelle from Pierce shoes and Leather Repair of Rocky Mount was in the Beer Garden selling and sewing on patches! Ray Schmitz of Cantejas Art was on hand autographing the new book, Outlawz & Angelz”. Ray is the artist that created the cover for the new book by Doobie Sykes. The Bud Girls were on hand later in the evening and they gave away some great prizes while the band ‘One Way Glass’ performed well into the night. Purple and all the folks at Bonedaddy’s Hideaway hosted one heck of a Bike Night with many beer specials and free food throughout the evening.

INFORMATION FOR NORTH CAROLINA MOTORCYCLE DRIVERS During the late summer of 2009 there were two separate law enforcement license/vehicle checks in North Carolina that targeted only motorcycles. Other vehicles were allowed through without being checked. These checks were in Newport, NC and Jacksonville, NC. Both of these are military towns. We believe that these roadblocks are not legal and that they are discriminatory due to profiling based upon mode of transportation. Contacts regarding this have been made to legislators, the law enforcement agencies involved, the Governor’s Highway Safety Program and other governmental officials by our organization and others. Law enforcement seems to think that these enforcement tactics are a great idea. We do not. We have started a fund to help combat these roadblocks in the future. The advice of a lawyer has been solicited. We hope that with the objections that have already been raised that law enforcement will find that continuing these roadblocks is just not worth it, but we want to be prepared if these actions continue. Here is where you can help. If you see or are subjected to a motorcycle only roadblock, note the location, the time of day, the law enforcement agencies involved, officers names, and any other information that you may think is pertinent. Take pictures or video if possible. Send us this information to ncroadblocks@gmail.com You can also go to the CBA website for information on how to handle helmet tickets. Third Annual Jack Laughery Ride for Knowledge To Be Held May 22 (Rocky Mount, NC) The Nash Community College Foundation is pleased to announce that the 3rd Annual Jack Laughery Ride for Knowledge will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Rocky Mount Harley-Davidson. The event serves as a tribute to Jack Laughery, the former CEO and chairman of the Hardee’s restaurant chain along with his wife, Helen and their love of motorcycling and support of higher education. All proceeds from the motorcycle ride benefit the Helen and Jack Laughery Honorary Scholarship Fund at Nash Community College.

The Helen and Jack Laughery Honorary Scholarship was established in 2004 to recognize the Laugherys’ philanthropic endeavors and outstanding leadership for the betterment of the Nash/Rocky Mount area. This fund provides annual scholarships to help deserving nontraditional students who return to college to enhance their marketable job skills. Twenty scholarships have been awarded since the scholarship’s establishment.

The motorcycle ride is rain or shine and will be held at Rocky Mount Harley-Davidson. Registration will begin at 9:30am and the ride will begin at 11:30am. The cost to ride is $15 per rider and includes breakfast, lunch catered by Doug Sauls’ BBQ, live music provided by Candy and the Strangers, and a parade-style ride escorted by the Nash County Sheriff’s Office through scenic Nash County. All bikes are welcome.

The event will feature a car show, entertainment, raffles and an opportunity to speak with current students and scholarship recipients. Harley’s Heroes Disabled American Veterans Mobile Service Office will provide one-on-one consultation to veterans and their families with easy access benefits, education and counseling. The Nash Community College EMS, Machining and Welding Programs will be highlighted at the event with the mobile classroom and custom-built chopper on-site.

GREETINGS FROM PASTOR THUMPER Blessings to my biker family and hope you are riding strong and hard. I know that all of you are ready for great weather and places to ride. Let us not forget to invite others to ride with us this year, always invite others to share your world. With this said, allow me to share a warm story about a young lady that found a family within the biker world. This is proof that God works in mysterious ways. I truly think that God had a hand in this.

There is a young lady whose name is Alyssa and she is married to a great guy named Pawel. Alyssa spent most her time with her immediate family, her husband and her work. She did not have many acquaintances that she and Pawel could go out with and share an evening or hobby, that is, until Pawel bought his first bike. Pawel decided he wanted a bike after spending some time on Thumpers bike. I guess Thumper plants seeds for bikes just as he does for the lost in Jesus’ name.

Last year during Daytona bike week, Alyssa was pregnant with twins, two little girls to be exact. Pawel, was so thrilled and anticipating the arrival of the little girls. Pawel decided to take a break and go to the bike rally with the Thumper.

What a time we had in one of the biggest bike rallies held in the U.S. Later, Pawel and Alyssa joined a ride group out of Raleigh, N.C. called “The No Rules Riders.” Things started to change for Alyssa and Pawel in their life, through an unexpected misfortune. You see, Alyssa lost the twins during an early birth. Alyssa decided to get a tattoo that would keep her girls memory. It is a set of angel hands holding two little baby girls. I must say it is a beautiful tattoo. Pawel designed the artwork for her tattoo. It has meaning and love that she will carry with her forever. When Alyssa got her tattoo that day several of the bikers that Alyssa and Pawel ride with showed up with love and support and spent time with them. This touched this young lady that had gone through a great lose and trauma. Alyssa and Pawel have been riding with their group for a short time and have attended some events that this group has sponsored. She saw a fellowship and comradely that she had never experienced before. This even escalated in 2010 when she and Pawel attended the 69th Annual Daytona Bike rally with her Uncle Thumper. I wish you could have seen her eyes as we rode to and around the Daytona area. On Main Street, Alyssa had a grin that was inescapable. When we arrived at the Daytona racetrack with the vendors as far as you could see, all Alyssa could say was, WOW! There was every thing that would pertain to a motorcycle and biker. She just made my trip all worthwhile. Alyssa saw and heard just about every bike made. The thing that I saw in Alyssa was her trust and comfort around all the bikers she approached, whether around Christian bikers, various riding groups, clubs, even the outlaws of the Daytona area. We were treated with the utmost respect. This made a very big impression on Alyssa. During the trip, I also got to meet some of the group that she and Pawel ride with from Raleigh, N.C. They too made me feel like I have known them all my life as I was greeted with hugs and handshakes.

You see God has a plan for everyone to see, learn, and experience the love and respect that He has for us and for us to have for each other. Through a common thing called a motorcycle, Alyssa found a friendship, a new family, a new hobby that is shared with many others. Nevertheless, most of all she saw the Love of Jesus Christ through a lifestyle that most people still look down on. I am a firm believer that when you show some sort of trust and love for Jesus Christ, He will show you a love and trust beyond compare. For Jesus loves all people regardless of their walk with Him for He will always walk with you. For you see, Jesus is just waiting for you to call on Him. When you are riding your bike down a roadway, He is there with you, when you are at a party, He is there with you. When it is your time for a change in your way of life, and trust me, only you will know when, please call on Jesus. Ask for a life change in the name of Jesus. (If you get a chance, read in the bible JOHN 3:16-17) Alyssa has seen, felt, and lived a personal pain with her daughters passing. However, she knows Jesus through a love and fellowship that contains motorcycles and bikers. Let us be a rolling billboard for the public this year as we ride the highways and byways. Smile, wave, and share who you are and what you are on your bike. So, till we meet in the highway or at a club event, be blessed, be safe and know Jesus Christ and the Thumper love you.

The Doobie Trike

I rode a motorcycle for over twenty years before I got sick. Without giving away my age here, let’s just say that was quite some time.

In December of ‘06 I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in my spine. For a year, prior to that, nobody could figure out what was wrong with me. I fell down a lot and eventually lost the use of my legs, completely. I couldn’t even wiggle my toes. I ended up at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C. and they told me that my cancer was inoperable. One doctor even told me that they were unsure if they could even touch the cancer and my time may be limited.

So, I took rigorous doses of chemotherapy and radiation.

I stayed at Duke for several months and was told that for sure I would never walk again.

That was then...this is now.

A am now cancer free, thanks to my doctors and the prayers of my family, friends and people I never even met. But I do have minor reprocussions from the cancer.

The tumor damaged nerves in my left leg. I also have some muscle atrophy and the radiation fried the lymph nodes in that leg. I may never run a marathon or scale a rock wall but I am walking with the aid of a cane and I am still here. That is more than the doctors predicted early on.

After not riding for about four years I was starting to get the itch again but holding up my bike and switching gears was next to impossible.

On October 17th, 2009 The Biker Barn had their Annual Open House. Prior to the event raffle tickets were sold

by Gary and The Crew and lots of other folks. Prizes for the raffle were donated by The Wild Indian of Goldsboro, CycleMax of Wilson, Knightdale Pawn of Knightdale, Open Road Biker Gear of Goldsboro, American Jewelry & Pawn of Rocky Mount and Art Forms Studios of Morehead City in exchange for advertising in the mag. We also sold tickets for a chance at a half & full page ad and cover ad in the mag.

Thanks to everyone who helped sell the tickets and to those of you who bought tickets.

Gary, Gregg, Big Will and all the gang did an awesome job triking my bike! They raked out the front end, slammed the rear end, added 295/50 tires, added different trees, different headlight, different air breather, custom built the running boards and added an electric (Pingle) shifter just to name a few of the changes. Curtis from Classic Air and Graphics did the bodacious paint job!

It feels great to be out on the open road, foot loose (literally) and cancer free. Thanks to all of you for helping make that possible!

I have had my trike now about a month and I am getting pretty used to it...so don’t be surprised if i pull up next to ya and rev my engine a little...remember I’ve got a Pingle.

On April 11th, 2010..... 32 of the greatest riders met for a ride that took us about 300 miles round trip to Yorktown, VA. This is a trip that we take at least 3 times a year. One of the best Pubs in Virginia is located right on the York River. The place is well known for its visitors of motorcycle enthousists, hot rod riders and most of all... bikinis.The pub is normally full eveytime we go, so we have addapted to ordering out and eating out side on the hill next door. Not only do you get to enjoy the Pub’s great cooking, but you get to enjoy all the breath taking views.

Tar River Basin CBA Makes A Proclamation Statement May is National Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month. Members of the Motorcycling community and State ABATES specifically actively encourage local Mayors, state Governors, and the President of the United States to publicly announce and support this event. The event aims to encourage the public to “Look Twice Save a Life”. It asks drivers and riders alike to slow down and pay closer attention to traffic and vehicles around them. With the month of May comes a warmer, more favorable condition for Motorcyclists. ABATES around the country will be rallying people looking for their motorcycle endorsement to take a basic rider course as well as trying to show teens taking their drivers education courses what to look out for and what not to do. ABATES nationwide will be working with their local and State Officials to reduce the number of motorcycle accidents through various educational and Public service avenues. They will be trying to get the message out through News Print, Radio, and TV announcements that “Motorcycles are Everywhere” and come from all Walks of Life, to please “Look Twice, Save a Life” The Tar River Basin chapter of the Concerned Bikers Association/ABATE of NC did this April 12th at the Rocky Mount City Council Meeting. Assistant Legislative Coordinator John M Vaudo coordinated with Mayor Combs to have this Proclamation read into the minutes of their meeting and have a Proclamation Certificate presented to members of the local CBA/ABATE chapter. Tar River Basin treasurer Debra Burke also arranged for members to meet with the Town Council of Walstonburg for the same purpose on April 13th. The Tar River Basin will also be meeting with the Town of Tarboro and Town of Snow Hill Councils in May to receive Proclamation certificates as well.

For many people out in the world, CBA/ABATE is an unknown entity. I would like to hopefully define what it is and what it stands for. ABATE (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to “..preserving the rights, improving the image, and promoting safe operating practices of motorcyclists.

The original (1970’s) definition of the acronym “ABATE” is: A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments. ABATE defines Totalitarian Enactments as laws established without CBA Assistant Legislative Coordinator, John M. the consent or consideration of the people. The Boston Tea Vaudo receiving his proclamation certificate after Party was prompted by a totalitarian act perpetrated upon the having his proclamation read into the minutes of the colonists by King George. The Rally cry against King George, Rocky Mount City Council Meeting.

Taxation without representation, still serves as a shining example of the philosophical foundation of our organization.

CBA/ABATE of NC continues to pursue that time-honored tradition... “don’t make laws about us, without seeking our involvement.” To that end, we remain actively involved in our government.

STATEMENT OF POSITION AND ACTIVITY TO PROMOTE THAT POSITION

ABATE is a freedom of choice organization, dedicated to the premise that the individual is best suited to decide the type of motorcycle to ride, the type of safety gear to wear, and their own personal lifestyle. The primary objective of ABATE is to monitor legislative activity in regard to laws affecting motorcyclists, especially those designed to limit our freedom of choice, and to encourage all members to become politically involved in order to effect positive legislation and deter that of a negative nature. Through public forums, writing letters and meeting elected representatives, ABATE members have the opportunity to present their side of the issues and educate governmental leaders about the needs of motorcyclists.

Legislative directors on the state and regional levels help to coordinate these efforts, and, when necessary, provide a communication link between the organization and elected officials.

Other goals include: Mounting vigorous campaigns for motorcycle rider education and related safety programs. Raising political awareness and encouraging members to register and vote. Supporting the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), and other motorcyclist rights organizations around the nation. Dissemination of motorcycling related information, staging events for members, the raising of funds for charitable causes, and general promotion of motorcycling!

Some recent statistics for Nash and Edgecombe Counties show that as of 2008 the 5 year average is overall 36 fatal crashes with 41 fatalities and 1421 crashes with 2294 injuries of those 3 were fatal motorcycle wrecks and 47 were non fatal with 52 injuries. As a percentage it is 8% of the motorcycle accidents were fatal and 3% non fatal. when compared to the demographics of 144,766 people with 137,038 registered vehicles we see less than1% of1% of motorcycle accidents were fatal per capita and only 3% of 1% were non fatal. State wide as of 2006 there were close to 3800 accidents involving Motorcycles reports by the NCDOT claim approximately a 50/50 ratio of single vehicle to multi vehicle of about 1800 each. The majority of all Motorcycle accidents occurred on Streets and Secondary (county) roads and involved the Motorcyclist going straight ahead. The top 5 contributing circumstances don’t describe weather it was the rider or the motorist but are speeding for the conditions, careless & reckless, inattention, failure to reduce speed, and speeding. Some of the numbers reported are incongruent as well the 2006 report states there were 3685 crashes but later reports 3794 by driver ages and maneuvers performed and 3211 by contributing circumstances.

Enforcers Open House On Saturday March 20th the “Enforcers Motorcycle Club’ Raleigh Chapter hosted their annual open house at their Zebulon clubhouse. The Enforcers members and families cooked and served pork loin and fix-ins’ to a variety of guest which entertained nearly 100. The party began at lunch time and continued all through the night entailing entertainment and lots of camaraderie. ‘We would like to thank all who attended and partied with us; and we look forward to next year!’

Open Road Biker Gear’s Open House About seventy bikers stopped in to help celebrate our Second Annual Open House. We couldn’t have asked for better weather, sunny with temperatures in the seventies. There was ample opportunity meet and visit with fellow bikers.

Bikers traveled from the local area and riders from even as far away as S. Carolina stopped in to visit. Folks lined up for the food and drinks prepared by our friend Jason. Everyone was pleased to find store-wide special prices on leathers and accessories. The Open Road staff was happy to provided our signature small business customer service. The day ended with a drawing for a number of door prizes.Tony Price won a large Sissy Bar Tour Pack, Jackie Coombs won a light-weight ladies leather jacket and many other prizes were given away. The Open Road Biker Gear staff appreciated the opportunity to serve the biker community and look forward to providing your biking needs.

“ These Highways” When I was a boy I rode bicycle everywhere I could, all through the streets and alleys of our neighborhood.

And as a teen I rode my thumb to see how far I’d go, from Maine to California and the Gulf of Mexico.

Then as a young man I borrowed a bike, and soon learned how to ride.

That’s when I knew that’s what I’d do until the day I died.

So I went out and bought this Hog, It’s now been thirty years, and it still feels like the first time when I go through these gears.

Now as I ride across this land from the east coast to the west, I can’t help but look around and think of how we are blessed.

To be able to climb on to a bike and go from sea to sea, I don’t know how you might feel, but that’s pretty blessed to me.

Lord I love these highways, they’ve been good to me, I’ve traveled across the USA from sea to shining sea.

Now when I’m gone and you see them carve my name in stone, please don’t cry, cause I’ll be free to ride the winds and roam.

Benefit Poker Run and Memorial For ‘Crash’

‘CRASH’

The morning of March 27th was cool and breezy, but that didn’t stop close to 150 people from converging on the Wilson County Ghost Riders Clubhouse, to help the Ghost Riders raise money for the family of one of their own, ‘Crash’. Crash was the Vice President of the Wilson Co. Ghost Riders, as well as, a Vietnam Veteran, truck driver, husband, father, grandfather, friend, and Brother. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on March 24, 2009. Crash was a fighter but on February 12th 2010 he lost the battle and succumbed to the disease and was called home to heaven. For Crash it means riding through the Pearly Gates on roads of gold, but for us it means remembering a really great guy.

Patriot Guard member presenting Ms. The Club started with a Benefit Poker Run at 1pm. The ride consisted of 75 Joe with a plaque. riders with participants from the Iron Order, Tuscarora, Southern Riders, Vietnam Vets, The Patriot Guard, Bikers for Christ, CBA, Christian Motorcycle Association, Ghost Riders (from Wilson, Rockwell, Edgecombe, and West Virginia), as well as several independents.

The ride headed out to Wendy Trails in Stantonsburg where Wendy greeted each rider that entered the door, while Bob and Debra Burke (of CBA) eagerly helped all the riders at the bar. For those that were hungry, Wendy had BBQ, slaw, and grilled sausages waiting for the riders outside. While they ate, Erma Smith played turns and Gail Peele tended the outside bar to insure they had plenty to quench their thirst. Once everyone had drawn their cards and eaten they headed back to the bikes for the ride to Carolina Billiards in Wilson.

Upon arriving everyone lined up to draw their next card and then made their way to the bar for some liquid refreshments. Bill Houston, owner of Carolina Billiards, was there to greet the riders and talk about the up and coming riding season.

Preacher After everyone had finished their drinks and drawn their cards, we all headed back outside to the bikes for the ride to the Breeze in Elm City. The Breeze was the last stop before heading back to the Clubhouse. Once again, everyone drew their cards and ordered their drink of choice at the bar, then talked about the ride so far and memories of Crash. By 3:30pm everyone was back on the road again and heading back to the Clubhouse.

After arriving back at the Clubhouse, the last card was drawn and Tombstone announced that the food was ready for those that were hungry.

As usual, he had grilled some great chicken for the riders and the others that had arrived while the Poker Run was going on. Among the new arrivals were: Southern Iron, Blue Knights, and more Ghost Riders (Nash, Wayne, The Patriot Guard Lenior, Scotland and Duplin Counties). After everyone had eaten the Patriot Guard lined up with each member holding an American flag, while Preacher from Iron Order began the Memorial for our friend, ‘Crash’ and he gave a great service in the memory of our dear friend. ‘Crash’, as everyone knew him, was eagerly awaiting the birth of a grandchild and as in his way, he held on long enough to see his granddaughter, “Jessica,” be born.

Crash’ was the kind of guy that always had a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eyes, a cigar in hand, and a kind word for all. Right up to the end he didn’t complain he enjoyed the days he had left with his family. For those of us he left behind we remember him with great admiration for his kindness, strength, and courage. If you were new to the Wilson Clubhouse he would go out of his way to welcome you and see that you were taken care of while Pulling into Wendy Trails there. After the service The Patriot Guard presented his wife with a plaque in his memory.

For those that never got to know him you lost the chance to know a true friend, a great husband, a fantastic father, and a loving grandfather. Joe ‘Crash’ Courchesne no longer walks beside us, but instead walks with us in our hearts and memories. So ride free our dear friend for one day we will ride together side by side again, but until then we know you will watch out for us as we ride on this Earthly plane. Rest in Peace my friend….

Approximately $2300.00 was raised for ‘Crashes’ family.

Ladies Garage Party at Collier Harley-Davidson

Collier Harley-Davidson in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. held their “Ladies Garage Party” on Tuesday, March 30th.

Stations were set up for groups of women to visit at their leisure. Some started in the Motorclothes Dept where Tracey and Jessica had various HD apparrel for the ladies to try on and wear to the next station.

That is where AJ was set up taking snap shots of the gals on their choice of motorcycle. From there, they went on to see Brook, who gave them many motorcycle tips and demonstarted how to properly lift a motorcycle that is lying on its side. The next station was in the dyno room with Brent. It did not matter if the ladies had ever ridden a motorcycle before or not because they could sit on one and go through the gears, feel the wind in their hair and never worry about any other vehicles or the bike falling over.

Cheryl and the gals at Collier HD had a marvelous array of food waiting for the ladies, as well as, a huge table displaying some of Harley Davidson’s latest women’s fashon items of the season.

Karen was there with Mary Kay samples and some great deals At the end of the evening the ladies all got goodie bags and some won some really nice door prizes.

ROAD TRIP #1 2010 My name is Dan…and I like to ride! I ride as much as I can all year long, but I thought I’d share my first road trip of the year. I define Road trip as a ride greater than 10 hours. I generally can get to just about anywhere I want to go in that range. Anyhow this trip was not only the first for the year, but also my first BABY SHOWER! Yep! Baby Shower! You might be wondering about that so let me explain…They do them different in Florida! They don’t exclude the men folk; they just turn it into a keg party! The ladies bring Gifts; the men bring Diapers and beer. My Daughter and Son-in-Law are about to have they’re first. So I couldn’t miss it!

Anyhow, the ride from Fremont, NC to Lakeland, FL was going to be right in the 10 hour range, so I jumped on my Street Bob at O-Dark thirty and made like a baby and headed out! Man it was cold! Even wearing my very good Fox Creek leathers I only made it about an hour and stopped for breakfast to let El Sol get things cooking a little better. For me my gloves are always the weak link in cold weather, anyhow it worked somewhat El Sol had it up into the 50’s and I started blasting down 95 again, pushing it hard pretty much only stopping for gas and redbull, and a Cheeseburger lunch. Anyhow, by the time I got to Florida it seemed pretty nice out…tops were down, and people were hardly wearing any clothes, This Indian Guy running a gas station said it was almost 80! I knew that was BS, as I was still fairly well chilled to the bone, from the morning freeze cycle.

I made it into Lakeland just as the party was getting started. I got to see some Family on My Ex’s side that was cool. Then went outside to the gathering around a keg full of Anti-freeze! Suddenly I wasn’t cold anymore!!!The women played the normal baby shower games and us guys got into the action too with a Baby bottle Chug contest! This wasn’t my first time at this game and tried to teach the younger guy’s a few of the finer points of the sucking on a nipple, like how “Biting” the nipple is almost always bad form! For some reason all the ladies that were gathered around cheering, whole-heartedly agreed with me!?? Anyhow, the nipples were virgins or something and the game lasted so long I had to stop to get a drink of beer a few times…and to tell ya the truth I think some of those young dudes developed “relationships” with they’re nipples! Ha! It really was a great party and I was glad to get to see my Daughter and Son-in-law, we spent long hours yakking into the night well after everyone else had left or crashed. Anyhow, this was a quick trip so the 10 hours down followed by about 8 hours of partying/visiting six hours of sleep and then 10 hours back up 95! Oh yeah one other thing this all took place just as Daytona’s Bike week was wrapping up. Lots of Bikes all over but just as many if not more trucks with trailers…one “Riding Club” had trailered they’re bikes from ALL the way up in the Jacksonville Area!?!?! WTF! Anyhow, I’m looking forward to more Road Trips this summer…Mama and I will be on a quest for the best Cheeseburgers around! LOL! I know a guy named Cheeseburger in Alexandria, LA…he got me started on that reason to ride years ago, but that’s a different story Ride hard, Dan
