The biggest thing to happen to hospitality in recent years is glamping. Bridging the gaps between camping, safari and hotels it has become the fastest growing hospitality culture in the world and offers something new and exciting to outdoor experiences.

Glamourous camping is all about making memories, being treated like royalty with plush beds and awesome views while being immersed in the outdoors. It is the perfect way to have your cake and eat it.

Safari lodges were offering glamping accommodations for many years and their influence can be strongly seen in the number of glamping establishments looking at tented and mobile structures for their guests. This is one of the reasons why glamping, safari tours, water tours and boutique accommodation work so well together.

STRESS TESTED Unlike many suppliers to the safari and glamping industries, Canvas and Tent was actually catering to a completely different market before they found another use for their product. After decades of providing tented products to various militaries and Defense Forces across the globe, Canvas and Tent really found their niche in the tourism market.

Bushtec Safari is the official luxury brand of the Canvas and Tent Group, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of canvas products and a name that is synonymous with style, high quality and reliability. Louw Bekker, Chief Executive Officer of the Canvas and Tent Group, took some time out of his schedule to share what has made this business the great entity that it is today.

“The African market at the time lacked a competitive network of canvas manufacturers who could service the popular safari game lodges and resorts with accommodation tents,” Louw explains.

“It is a business that began with a vision,” he explains, adding that Canvas and Tent was originally founded by a young couple in the late 60s, “They later sold it to a group of investors and over the next three decades, the tiny company with their great reputation was developed into a global leader in providing canvas products.”

According to Louw, in 1968 the company was mainly providing canvas tarpaulins for South Africa’s burgeoning railway industry. However, the singular quality of their canvas caught the attention of the South African Defense Force, which has since been one of their longest lasting clients. “This was the beginning of Canvas and Tent spreading across the African landscape

THE RISE OF THE BUSHTEC TURNKEY SOLUTIONS Glamping in general has no borders because it runs almost entirely on the imagination of people.

As such it has changed the accommodation market in two specific ways. Firstly, it became advisable for established companies on either end of the hospitality industry with camping on one side, and hotels and resorts on the other, to offer new and innovative styles of hospitality. Secondly, it gave complete newcomers the opportunity to work outside the box and offer something unique and treasured.

While Bushtec Safari’s initial focus was purely on manufacturing and installation, Bushtec Creations expanded the current service offered to provide full turnkey solutions for clients that would meet both of these new markets. This enabled them to make full use of their expertise and workforce to provide complete camp planning and concept design services, as well as qualified site inspections and thorough project management for clients.

“This means that in addition to construction and installation, we also do full electrical reticulation and water treatment,” Louw says, “As well as backof-house solutions such as staff accommodation, kitchens, laundry and storage. If the devil is in the detail, then we know all the fine print.”

“Also, considering that our company’s product had been stress-tested in the most extreme circumstances for many years, there was nothing that the tourism industry could throw at us that we hadn’t seen before. So, using what was already a very high-quality product the company began manufacturing and installing luxury tented units and quickly becoming a market leader in this arena.

It is easier to add style to a reliable product than adding reliability to a stylish one.”

THE VALUE OF VALUED RELATIONSHIPS Louw says that some of the investors who are now directors and senior management had long standing business relationships from decades of previous ventures. It is their relationships which have made them more family than business partners, and allowed them to steer the company to where it is now.

THE GLAMPING EXPLOSION While the business has existed for several decades Louw tells us that its true success has been over the last ten years. Specifically, as the glamping industry has matured from an innovative idea to a multi-million-dollar industry which has been the biggest and most influential development to hospitality ever.

“Importantly,” he says, “This quickly increased the number of competitors in the market which encouraged us to find modern, neoteric ways to remain ahead of the curve. This is after all very important for any business with a long-standing reputation because you can’t allow yourself to become too set in your ways. This is why Bushtec Safari and Bushtec Creations had to exist.”

When construction was completed in early 2018, Kingfisher lodge boasted an opulent array of structures. Among these are twenty luxury accommodation units, five for families and fifteen for couples and single guests. These tented chalets include bedrooms, bathrooms, living areas and patios, as well as their own private swimming pools. The lodge also boasts a spa, conference facilities, prayer rooms and an outdoor entertainment deck.

“We work with a range of clients from large international companies to smaller groups including humanitarian organizations, mining houses, aviation companies, and outdoor enthusiasts,” Louw says, “Our products are applicable to everyone and our services fit all projects.”

“Our business is incredibly reliant on building good relationships. Frans Vermaas and Dave Court, who head Bushtec Safari and Bushtec Creations respectively, were in the Safari Lodge business for years before joining Canvas and Tent,” Louw says, “Their connections with hundreds of lodge owners and industry professionals has allowed us to build a close-knit network of clients who trust the brand enough to have worked with us year after year.”

“Further to that,” he adds, “Some of our earliest clients’ children have now come to be our clients too. Some of these relationships with resort owners span over 30 years, and we’ve constantly been the port of call for all resort upgrades and maintenance.”

“Exhibiting at these shows has allowed us to realize how unique our product is,” Louw explains, “And how starkly it differs from some of the standard renditions of glamping tents across the globe. The research done on these tours has allowed us to sharpen our strongest tools and improve on old and new technologies to ensure that we retain market share and futureproof ourselves.”

According to Louw, their industry has never been more competitive or fast-paced. As such, one of their most vigorous marketing activities is market research, for which they employ the most highlyskilled and vastly-experienced team of innovators.

He reveals that glamping has boomed in a way they never expected over the past year, and that

Their factory in Ladysmith South Africa is an innovation hub of note, Louw says, adding that once the research is done by the marketing maestros, the magic is created by what he calls their technical savants. The factory is 22,000m² and houses a host of technological wonders.

The first of these is the Eaton System, which is an overhead production line system and power management solution that makes electrical, hydraulic and mechanical power operate more efficiently, safely and sustainably. This has been an enormous contributing factor in their ability to maximize productivity and output.

OTHER ENTITIES To ensure that their global reach does not come at the cost of any of their quality or reliability, several other business components have been established as separate entities to ensure a focused approach for clients. Canvas and Tent USA has been trading from an Atlanta-based office since 2016, divided into Bushtec Adventure USA for outdoor gear, and Bushtec Safari USA for the glamping and luxury safari markets. Other such entities include two businesses in Africa, Tents Direct in South Africa and Kalahari Kanvas in Botswana which provide outdoor gear supplies. And, two businesses internationally providing luxury tents and glamping camp solutions, Canvas and Tent Europe in Belgium and Canvas and Tent Australia which services Oceania and Asian clients.

The factory is also home to a state-of-the-art laboratory, where they research innovative and improved methods for curing, treating, laminating and strengthening canvas. The 6000m² steel factory has a similar task, ensuring the absolute structural integrity of the metal components intended to keep the tents standing for years.

Here, new innovations such as powder coating have been perfected and implemented.

“Our business is heavily reliant on artisans, who are trained and have certification in various trades including electrical reticulation, welding, plumbing and tailoring,” Louw says, “Our sales and marketing teams also participate in soft-skills training courses and one-on-one coaching sessions to guide them towards their peak professional potential.”

MANDRARE RIVER CAMP Riverside Luxury tented accommodation in the heart of Madagascar

In 2007, Mandrare River Camp welcomed its first guests to the luxury tented camp set upon the banks of the Mandrare River in Madagascar.

Edward Tucker Brown is the founder of Madagascar Classic Collection. After working in London for six years for two sizeable safari companies based in East Africa, he decided it was time to explore tourism in a less tourist-filled area.

FOUNDING HIS COMPANY Peniel is an example of what education can do to change the course of a person’s life. Before founding Lights on Africa, he studied hotel management in Arusha, and then at the Institute of Commercial Management in the UK he studied travel and tourism marketing and customer services.

THE TEAM Working with a small but engaged team of five, Peniel explains that his safari guides have over ten years of experience in wildlife and nature safaris.

Each are able to approach the tours with engaging charisma and confidence.

Afterwards, he spent years working for several hotels, lodges and travel companies in Tanzania.

“Two things are very important for safari guides,” he says, “One is that they need to be able to communicate openly and fluently with the guests.

All of my guides speak fluent English and we are able to offer Spanish, French and Italian on request, this allows the tours to be engaging and communicative and the guides to answer questions fully. Secondly, it is being able to be flexible with the approach and innovative when unexpected things happen on tour. Nature can be unpredictable, and our guides need to be savvy enough to make the best of this.”

THE SAFARIS The safaris themselves can either have set itineraries, which is common for first timers to Tanzania who don’t know what to expect and therefore cannot be expected to know all of what they want to see. Or they can be created around the client’s interests and budgets.

Depending entirely on what the client is looking for, the safaris can last anywhere from 1-28 days and Lights on Africa provides all the necessary services to make the trip as smooth as possible.

These includes logistic handling such as the arrangement of domestic flights and bus/shuttle bookings, hotel bookings, airport pick up and transfers and arranging safaris to historical and cultural sites. There are also many mountains to climb including Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Kenya, Mt. Meru, Oldoinyo Lengai, and Usambara Mountains.

Peniel describes Tanzania as Africa’s finest destination and the statistics really speak for themselves. Hands-on experience is especially important when it comes to the driver guides who are thoroughly trained in the tourism field. It is important for them to have an

Photographic safaris have taken off in a big way.

With photo-friendly platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook providing every professional or would-be photographer with an engaged audience of their own. Mary sees it as good business practice to offer the sorts of expeditions that will provide clients the opportunity to capture the best pictures.

To do this, she explains, they have had to keep themselves updated with global trends, which has never been easier thanks to social media. They also pay attention to what customers say and observe how they behave during the safaris, as their enjoyment is the compass with which they direct their business.

“We have a new product for those who have a love for visiting remote places and engaging with diverse cultures and taking photographs,” Mary says, “We are already partnering with a professional company that can offer the best standards on this new product and will be launching very soon.”

“You cannot predict the future demand,” she says, “You have to use your imagination, experience and research to estimate what will be trending in the industry. This is usually determinable by what people are speaking about now.”

Additionally, Mary believes that through the use of multimedia and by enabling her guests to produce these images it helps spread the international message regarding the importance of this land being left undeveloped. Helping to fight against the incessant rise of land buying, poaching and trophy hunting by replacing shooting with guns with shooting with cameras.

She elaborates that by being able to plot a course based upon this information you can begin to identify and manage the risk that is involved.

THE VALUE OF WORKING IN THE SHADOW Founders Ryan Duarte and Chirag Patel were very specific with what they wanted to offer when they launched Glo Domes. They were also very much aware of what the competition was doing and what they were up against. In America there are already a handful of very established businesses producing domes for the glamping industry who believe that they have the market monopolised.

Whereas, many people would have looked at the shadow cast by these companies and felt intimidated by it, Ryan and Chirag made full use of this shade to see what gaps in the market were shining through.

“It’s thanks to him that we’re not selling Glo Domes at some expensive time-share-esque luncheons seminars for business people and retirees on a beach.” Ryan says.

“No business begins as the biggest in the industry,” Ryan points out, “We were able to assess what these companies were doing right for their customers and where they were letting their customers down. Then we designed our business around a foundation of offering a top service and filling those gaps. At this point we don’t need to be the biggest, we want the happiest customers and to grow on that.”

He goes on to say that he believes it is important to have a business partner who doesn’t care about your feelings or how precious you might be about a certain idea. At the same time, not being automatically dismissive is just as important, being willing to hear every idea fully to see if there is any value there. These sorts of business people are rare to come by and should be treasured.

The pair of them met in August 2017 and Glo Domes has been going since January 2018. They have geared up the production side and sold a handful of units with an average sale of $21,500.

So far, these sales have been to American business people who initially bought their Glo Domes with the intention of using them professionally.

HOW IT BEGAN Ryan Duarte is a serial entrepreneur who spent the first half of his professional life striving to create enough passive income to support himself and his family. He owns a software company that has patented a number of protocols, a laundromat, organic agricultural farms in norther California and a hay brokering company that he runs through his horse farm called Bitteroot Valley Paso Fino Horse Farm. He is a man always open to new ideas and drawn to creative opportunities, relishing the chance to work with like-minded people.

“I attend mastermind sessions,” he explains, “It’s a great place to openly discuss ideas with other business people, there we can have a proper look at these ideas and reveal the good ones that can be used, the bad ones that need to be developed and the potential failures we need to dodge.”

It was actually at one of these sessions that he met his business partner Chirag Patel who works in the finance industry and owns a hedge fund. Ryan describes him as a straight talking, down-the-line business man who’s not afraid to speak his mind and call a spade a spade.

“However,” Ryan says, “We later discovered that they liked their Glo Domes so much that they’re now using them at 39

their homes instead. Some of these have been for hunting or fishing cabins and others have been for home extensions for their leisure activities. One customer ended up using it so that his son, who hadn’t moved out of the house yet, could at least move out into the garden and have a place of his own.”

OUT OF THE DOME THINKING While it is sell, sell, sell at the moment, Ryan is exploring all of the possible uses for the Glo Domes. So far, they know that glamping and boutique stays both locally and internationally are an obvious fit but there are some other areas that he is exploring that have shown great potential.

“The Glo Domes are weather proof and solar powered with heating or cooling apparatus and offer brilliant viewing opportunities,” he says, “Festivals for music, art and travel are an exciting opportunity. It’s easy to picture a Glo Dome at a music festival offering something special for VIP guests and onsite campers. Then there are places like truck stop motels.”

EARLY DAYS It is early days for Glo Domes but the impression they’ve made is quite tangible and the future is going to be very exciting and busy. Right now, the business partners are totally focused on development and sales.

Truck stop motels, servicing the travelling professional as well as the long distance holiday seekers are an important service for anyone travelling long distance by road. Motels and hotels along the way need to find new ways to make themselves attractive and different. People have become far more expectant and discerning when it comes to where they lay their heads. “I am a workaholic,” Ryan admits, “If I don’t have a reason to stop, I’ll just keep working. So, I make full use of my Glo Dome because firstly, it gives me time to spend with my kids and my wife. I have two children of 5 and 7, and my wife of 14 years is due to add a third to our family. Secondly, it is a magical place for my children to make memories with their parents.”

During our interview he described how wildlife today, around the world, is affected more by behaviours than simply the highly mediatized “global warming,” threat. More and more, tourism is having to bear the weight of responsibility with protecting these natural treasures. He’s seen poachers be able to run amok because antipoaching is so massively underfunded. Funds generated through responsible tourism can have a huge impact on areas that are affected by negative human factors such as poaching. Apart from these local issues, global warming also poses a threat.

But ignorance and indifference can create an even more immediate threat to the animals and the environment, so education is vital.

Yet in the face of this, he has also witnessed over the last two decades in the industry, the hugely positive effect that responsible safaris can have on conservation. And how, especially today with the power of social media, the ripple effect of these safaris can reach even further.

WILD-HART The Joy of Creating Something Special.

Specifically serving as a means of staving off boredom.

Twenty-two years of designing and building playgrounds, cabins and home furniture for various contracts has served Wild Hart cofounder Nick Sneller very well. Working alongside his wife Colette Hudson, the pair officially entered the glamping market in 2016 and the interest and feedback for their business has been fantastic.

This flies in the face of the glamping values of combining nature and the outdoors, where the aesthetic of a place is very important. With this in mind, Nick has called upon his furniture design background and his love of working with natural, local timbers.

Offering crossovers for glamping site owners looking to cater for families, Wild Hart create accommodation for guests such as pods and cabins and also the sorts of engaging playground areas that will keep children enthralled for hours.

And probably make grown-ups green with envy.

“Wild Hart was set up to fully explore the idea of developing a company to create glamping accommodations,” he says, “But the value of a unique, bespoke play area for children expands the possibilities. Children need an area to play and families need a comfortable, luxurious place to stay.”

While many camping sites offer playgrounds for children, these are usually stand-alone areas that do not add much to the aesthetic of the place.

HOW DID IT BEGIN? Nick explains that his wife Collette has a flair for interior design and décor which he admits is not his strong suit. He is a trained cabinet maker, and throughout his career and due to his general enjoyment of working with timber, he developed strong affiliations with woodlands and woodlands management.

“My furniture is nature orientated,” he explains, “I make use of the shapes of the timber and take a lot of inspiration from nature. In 2002 I set up a business making fine furniture and sculptural designs.”

“What is important is that it is exciting and safe,” he says. To this end all of Nick’s playgrounds adhere to the standard set by EN1176/77, which is a guideline to suggest how to minimize risks.

This business led to Nick making large sculptural furniture for schools and public parks and was one of the elements that led to his playground creations. A hands-on education option was given as a means to engage children and communities in building with timber and helping to create their new space.

“We install a playground and we get an independent officer to go and inspect it to confirm that we have done everything in our power to balance out that fun versus safety conundrum.”

GLAMPING ACCOMMODATION PRODUCTS

And, as glamping became ever increasingly popular and site owners were scrambling for new ways to differentiate themselves from their competition, Nick saw an opportunity to use his skills to create the classic pods which have made the glamping portion of his business very successful. Then, he is able to add value to each site with the options of certified playgrounds uniquely designed to fit with the location and making use of the natural area.

The Octa-Pod is the most popular seller at Wild Hart. A modular design of frame work and panels where the round pole framework is organic and natural. The paneling is insulated so can be used all year round and heated by AstecTherm. Nick explains that this design of paneling and natural framework creates an adaptable structure that maintains the element of bespokeness as no two timbers are identical.

“As a supplier into this industry it pays to be able to add extra value in areas that site owners may not have thought of,” he says.

With a main team including himself, his wife, a recently employed furniture maker and another four part time staff members, it takes roughly two months to design and create a custom Octa-Pod.

PLAYGROUNDS Glamping, as an industry is still finding its feet with regards to standardization and quality assurance.

However, playgrounds by necessity need to stay within a certain standard of safety. Nick explains that his aim is to strike a balance between creativity and safety.

“It’s a quality product,” he explains, “Our clients are looking for something that is creative and original, yet adaptable and reliable. It takes time to do the job properly.”

According to him, playgrounds should not be themed but rather allowed to be environmentally dictated. Bespokely designed to suit what is available on site. His approach is to create something that is exciting and different, offering opportunities to climb, to crawl and jump and let the children’s imagination fill in the details while they play.

the project strongly determines the price range, keeping in mind that some clients are just looking for the bare essentials while others want full heating, insulation, plumbing and power.

Creativity is very important, Nick says, “There are certain parameters that have to be followed to make an accommodation or playground safe, but everything on top of that is down to imagination and ingenuity.”

“Bespokeness is what we do, and we never look at a set product,” Nick says “We think of ourselves as a service provider instead of product peddlers because even though our products such as the Hex-Pod and Octa-Pod are premanufactured you wouldn’t call them off the shelf.”

Site surveys are quite important in Nick’s line of work and he has visited a number of sites and worked very closely with clients to discuss design ideas. He admits that often, when a site visit is required it is because it’s due to specifically complex environments.

“Glamping thrives on luxurious accommodation in unique locations,” Nick says, “So there are always interesting challenges that need to be overcome in some creative and ingenious manner.”

One client, he recalls, had a steep hillside where he wanted a treehouse style cabin/pod built to take full advantage of an uninterrupted view. They had to create a structure to sit on the hill that would be completely secure. Hillsides are not famous for being considerate when being built upon and the client did not want them to landscape the entire area. Therefore, carefully shaping the structure to fit the hillside not only provided a stable structure for the pod but managed to not interfere with the natural beauty of the site.

Instead, the Hex-Pod and Octa-Pod are very adaptable. If one is purchased and it is not big enough, or it needs to be enlarged one of the panels can be removed and another pod bolted on to. Everything bolts and unbolts, from a flatpack unit and can be disassembled as quickly as its assembled.

“This isn’t an office-based job,” Nick says happily, “We go on site visits to understand the site and work with clients to manage expectations and aspirations and develop ideas. If I didn’t like challenges this wouldn’t be the job for me.”

NOT OFF THE SHELF New clients and old can expect some exciting developments for this year as Nick and his team are creating products for new pods and fully functioning tree houses.

Their products are manufactured in their workshop in East Devon and then they assemble them onsite for their clients. The complexity of

“We take the guest’s enjoyment seriously,” Jake explains, “You book your international flight to Africa and from our base in Nairobi we take care of everything else for you, from arrival to departure. That includes meeting you on arrival at Nairobi, providing transfers to the hotels, booking accommodation and internal flights to the parks as well as booking the best camps and providing safari transport for wildlife viewing. In addition to Kenya we arrange trips to Tanzania as well as to other leading destinations in Africa.”

“If I had to choose,” he says, “I’d say that Amboseli, Laikipia and the Mara are definitely up there.”

GOOLETS Take the time to enjoy the journey

It only took one gulet cruise for business owners Mitja and Alenka to totally fall in love with the concept. In fact, it made such an impression on the pair that it wasn’t long before they were putting plans together to share the experience with others. With a shared background in tourism, Goolets was soon born.

As CEO Mitja MirtiČ explains, Goolets combines the luxury of a hotel, the adventure of a cruise and the boutique style of a top-line glamping resort with glamorous destinations. These include Turkey, Croatia and Greece with additional destination options such as Montenegro and Italy. But it is the time spent upon the yachts, which are called gulets, that make the holiday.

JOURNEYING WITH STYLE

“A gulet is a mostly wooden vessel that comes with a full crew including an experienced captain, chef, sailor and hostess,” Mitja says, “The gulets range in size from twenty up to fifty meters in length and have anywhere from four to eight cabins. Some of our larger fleet come with ten and up to sixteen cabins as well.”

According to Mitja, gulet cruises are similar to yachting holidays, if more affordable and somewhat slower. He says, “In the yacht business travel is faster as it is more focussed on getting you to your destination as soon as possible, but a gulet is slower and allows you the chance to properly appreciate the experience of the journey. With food services that are nothing short of amazing, luxurious accommodation and of course wonderful sea views.”

For Goolets, Croatia is the hottest destination at the moment, with Dubrovnik and Hvar being very popular for the jet setters. Greece is always very popular for its food and culture while Turkey, which offers the widest range of gulets (more than 1000 to choose from) is a great choice for variety.

Mitja suggests that a combination of Turkey and Greece at this time of year is probably one of the best ways to experience the cruise.

He describes a gulet as a floating hotel. The finest food is served, the cabins are cleaned, the beach is always right there for you to enjoy and the hotel moves from location to location to ensure the view is always fresh and new. The wood gives it style and each vessel is unique and not part of some serial manufacturing. Gulets and yachts differ in one main area, yachts all look alike and are for show offs, gulets are for people who appreciate class. Gulets are preferred by those who like to be pampered, that like great food, to explore places away from crowds and most importantly take their time.

“I have several favourite routes and it would take too long to list them all,” he says, “One of the best of them is a one-way cruise from Split to Dubrovnik where you can experience all the best islands that Dalmatia can offer. This route takes you from Split to Hvar, then to BraČ island with its Golden Cape, to KorČula island then to Mljet or the Lastovo Nature Park with Dubrovnik in the end.”

TAILORED MADE CRUISES Mitja says that most cruises are based on seven nights and eight days from Saturday to Saturday.

This being said a ten day or fortnight cruise would also make perfect sense and clients can expect a completely tailored cruise to suit their wishes and tastes. As an example, a seven-day cruise from Split to Dubrovnik can be experienced very differently if you are a family with small kids or if you are a group of young couples. Families like safe beaches and family orientated water activities, couples may wish to swim and relax, eat superb meals and drink the best wines. Or if you are a group of seniors, you may wish to explore different towns, visit museums, experience local culture or just drink at a different taverna every day.

“Beachballs and sand, candles and romance or jet skis and parachuting. Each group has its own cup of tea,” Mitja explains, “All you need to do is tell us what yours is.”

THE BUSINESS KEEPING GOOLETS AFLOAT Goolets was founded by Alenka and Mitja MirtiČ in 2004. It is a family business and they are both still very involved and personally believe gulet cruise holidays are the best type of holidays in the world.

The company mantra is “Life is good” and their main mission is to put this mentality to everyone working in the company.

“It took around ten years for the company to really find its feet,” Mitja explains, “And with growth, a lot of challenges presented themselves. The main one was how to keep the services boutique and tailored to each group while we and the sizes of the groups we worked with expanded. There is a big difference between organising a trip for a group of ten people and a group of three hundred.”

Out of everything they do, to Mitja the “Human to Human Approach” is the most important and is, in his opinion, the company’s primary goal. Each client works personally with a member of staff to organise their holiday down to the finest detail.

Irrespective if this takes 200 emails and a hundred phone calls or is organised over a ten-minute chat, every detail is covered.

“Whatever the size of the group, we accommodate for it,” Mitja says, “This is the highest challenge and most important to us, that each and every one of our guests knows without a doubt that they are our most important one.”

CHALLENGES At the start, Goolets faced-off with the same challenges of many businesses. Quandaries like how to market and get clients without any budget, resources or experience in marketing while also running the business and the cruises.

“Saying that it was hard would be an understatement,” Mitja says, “We had to find our ways of promoting a product that nobody knew about to groups of people all over the world. It was cheaper than luxury yachts but wasn’t a ‘cheap holiday’ and nobody knew what a gulet was!”

But with a lot of hard work and being ultrastubborn and not giving up when it seemed impossible. Relying on mutual support and some good old-fashioned luck. Then combining these

“I would say there is really no big secret to success,” Mitja says, “All you need to do is go all in and commit fully, with your full heart, body, soul and all of your brains. Learn. Study. Never give up.

And be willing to go in with the realistic idea that for the first 5 years you will not make any money while working 80 hours a week. If you can do that, you know it’s worth it and you will be fine.”

This has shaped the business today as everyone involved in Goolets has a real passion for what they are doing. The commercial department maintain amazing relationships with the gulet owners from all over the world because they have a common passion that they can connect on. The sales team are one of the best in the industry, but not because they’re only good at sales but because they are a team of gulet experts who provide good advice and support to people that are interested.

“We are always trying to learn and study and develop,” Mitja says, “And employing people better than ourselves always gives us the opportunity to do so. You have to connect yourself with the best of everything and implement it into your business.”

“We have a team of amazing people, working on hard projects and trying to have as much fun as possible while doing it,” Mitja says, “If anything, success is an ongoing by product of this.”

TRUST AND RELATIONSHIPS Networking and building relationships are a crucial part of Alenka and Mitja’s business. There are a limited number of gulets in the world, so having a good relationship based on trust with owners of these vessels and the qualified professionals that make up the crew is fundamental. But relationship building goes further than this and stitches the entire business together.

“Mass tourism is China’s dominant tourism approach,” he says, “But in the Tibetan region we are leading with sustainable adventure tourism that is largely driven by local involvement. This is the biggest opportunity because it gives us an even easier job at differentiating ourselves and offering something special.”

Adventure Access is an adventure tour operator on the Tibetan Plateau who specialize in custom built itineraries combining outdoor elements such as hiking, mountain biking, mountaineering and immersive cultural experiences. This is very important to Brian and he counts himself lucky that he’s able to operate a successful business, in a country that he loves, with his family.

“Relationships are the ‘infrastructure’ of the region,” Brian says.

AMDO OVERLAND EXPERIENCE Currently the main service on offer is the extraordinary Amdo Overland Experience. This combines the best cultural elements of Tibetan farming and nomadic communities with important monastic centers. to do ourselves. Same goes for web design and development. We just keep them informed of the stories that are taking place and they work with that. The trick is finding the right people to work with and maintaining those key connections.”

CHALLENGES Setting up the business wasn’t straight forward or easy, Brian reveals. As the first foreign invested adventure operator in China, there were major hurdles to overcome. Things like convincing officials, filling out paperwork, repeated applications and many hours on the telephone. He explains it took two years to register the business.

And, once registered, it took a great deal of time and effort to gain the trust of the local leaders to operate at a level that could grow extensively over the years.

“Time and patience were key, and this region is a great place for both!” he says, “We never went away and have simply been around long enough to see our hard work pay off. Paperwork and registering in an office will take time, but you cannot rush things when it comes to earning people’s trust.”

FUTUREPROOFING Working closely with experts is one of the ways that Brian is making his business strong for the future. He isn’t a believer in the saying, “If you want something to be done right, do it yourself,”, instead they include other partners to help them do what is essential while they keep themselves focused on local relationship and client needs.

LIFESTYLE Adventure Access is a business directly related to lifestyle because of their love for the outdoors. It grew organically as a business around this passion.

It’s not surprising then that Brian sees a complete difference between travelling and vacationing.

“Travel involves exploring something new,” he says, “Vacationing involves pulling away and resting.

Our travels are usually quite active as we all love hiking and climbing but we’re lucky because we don’t have to travel to spend time in the outdoors.

This means we can be quite selective in our activities and as the family has grown and the kids

“We keep ourselves focused on the relationships at the local level and on operating outdoor cultural experiences for our clients while leaving the rest to the experts,” Brian says, “For example, for marketing, we work with trusted marketing partners to do great work that we wouldn’t be able

Elaborating on this Brian explains that he’s not thought of as an individual but as part of his family.

“We are probably most known as the family that has become a part of the fabric of the Eastern Tibetan plateau,” he says, “This sort of reputation is important to me because it means locally we are trusted, we have been accepted. We have become part of this wonderful, endless land.”
