THE “HEADS UP” FOR POTENTIAL GLAMPING SUPPLIERS

Following on from our recent feature regarding standardization within glamping we looked to The Glamping Show for answers. Considered to be the voice of the industry by site owners and suppliers they discussed with us the considerations potential and current suppliers may have for this market.

Laura Golding is Conference Producer for both The Glamping Show in the UK and The Global Glamping Summit in the US. The Glamping Show has built up its network of exhibitors over the last 4 years, allowing the Show team a first-hand view on how suppliers are faring. Laura, therefor, has an insight to what approaches bring success in the industry and which emerging trends are shaping it.

the glamping market an easy one to break into. In reality, you won’t get very far by bringing a new product to market just to be edgy and turn heads.

My first tip is to remember that your customers are looking for a product that solves a real problem or meets a genuine need for their glampsite.

TLE: In your experience what should a business consider before becoming a supplier to glamping?

Secondly, creativity and thinking outside the box are a must. Glampsites offer a wide variety of travel experiences. It is totally unlike the hotel industry where there are standard sized rooms, standard facility lists and set visitor expectations.

As a glamping supplier, your ability to innovate and create a novel solution or enhancement for the visitor experience is what will set your product apart from the rest.

Laura: The exciting thing about the glamping industry is the pace at which it’s expanding.

As demand grows from guests for unique and individual glamping experiences, we’re also now seeing incredible diversification in the supplier space. There is no standard format for glamping and so many elements are involved in creating a memorable guest experience. So, in many ways the sky really is the limit for suppliers!

Thirdly, glamping is entirely defined by the visitor experience and that filters straight through to glamping suppliers. As a supplier you need to be invested in the success of their site, not simply making your sale. In practical terms, your product design needs to be spot on, you need to be willing to guide your customers to make the right choice for their specific site and you have to have a plan for dealing with aftersales and maintenance issues.

TLE: Judging by The Glamping Show, what lengths do suppliers go to so they can accommodate the requirements of their clients?

Laura: At The Glamping Show we see many suppliers taking time to talk to one another, as well as to potential customers. A surprising number of partnerships come out of these discussions and, in my view, this is what makes glamping a fresh and creative industry to work in. With a constant dialogue between products and the community, there are no shortage of problems to solve and ways to solve them!

TLE: Are there any statistics available on how long glamping sites stick with their chosen suppliers? In which case is the relationship still closer to a “cottage industry” rather than mainstream hospitality?

Laura: I would say that the glamping industry is very different from mainstream hospitality. In the UK it has always been surprisingly well connected and collaborative – much more about community than competition. I was curious to know if this is also true of glamping outside the UK and our experiences with events in the US show that it is.

A single supplier will always be part of a bigger puzzle. Heating and lighting solutions for example, have to work within the structures already on glampsites and already on the market. If you have a heating or lighting product installed within the material of the structure you’ll clearly need to do your research and talk to other suppliers to get the product right.

As a result, supplier and customer relationships tend to last. It depends somewhat on the product, for example structures, sanitation solutions and booking software are a big investment and difficult to replace. Smaller items or accessories with a shorter lifespan are clearly less set in stone. In practice, an operator will tend to stick with a supplier until there’s a problem.

Visitor safety is also paramount and is as critical a consideration for suppliers as for glampsite operators. One severe safety incident could irreparably harm the entire industry and, understandably, glampsite operators are keen to know the safety credentials of any purchase they’re researching.

TLE: As the industry is still a young one, are suppliers generally on the same page as glamping sites with regards to goals and long-term ambitions?

It’s worth noting that when there are problems with a particular supplier, you can expect the community to share! Reputation and trust are so important in this industry and you can be sure word will get around.

Laura: We all want this emerging industry to realise its full potential and that point is still way off on the horizon. Suppliers and glampsite operators need to be on the same page in terms of goals and long term ambitions for us to get there.

outdoor accommodation. Accommodation and structures, heating, kitchens, bathrooms and waste management immediately come to mind and they are key players in realizing the full potential of this industry.

TLE: What have you found has been the biggest challenges for suppliers to help this industry realise its full potential?

Yet the industry is maturing to a point where there’s room for a raft of other suppliers who have established elsewhere, but want to test the outdoor accommodation market. Creating a unique and memorable visitor experience is key for glamping operators over the next few years and the smaller products, the finishing touches like cooking equipment, interior décor, outside furniture and outdoor play equipment are going to be increasingly important.

Laura: The most pressing challenges faced by glamping suppliers fall into the following categories: health and safety for visitors and those working on glampsites; sourcing sustainable materials; building a reputation with the customer base and pricing appropriately for the market.

TLE: What can suppliers do as a first step to build themselves up?

All glamping suppliers face their fair share of challenges. It’s not easy to build a beautiful product, ensure it meets all the safety regulations, use sustainable materials, maintain flexibility to work with varied locations, weather conditions, spaces and still come in at a price the market is willing to pay. Then you still have to face the challenge of building a reputation and trust in a tight knit community.

Laura: Building partnerships with other suppliers is an excellent way to stay ahead of the curve and reach new customer audiences without compromising your particular expertise. We’ve seen a lot of this among The Glamping Show supplier community in the last 12 months or so.

The key thing for suppliers in the glamping industry is keeping up with it as it evolves and being flexible enough to keep up with your customer’s businesses as they evolve with it.

Clearly those suppliers who are invested most heavily in the glamping industry are those whose products are most specialized for glamping and

Rik is a Chartered Industrial Engineer and studied at Coventry University before moving to Holland.

A consummate polymath, prior to founding Anthropods he co-founded a successful digital token-less authentication company known as Swivel Secure Ltd, of which he is the CEO. As if having a high level of business acumen is not enough, he also speaks Dutch, plays the mandolin and when he was younger had aspirations of becoming an RAF pilot. Clearly a man able to deal with high ideas.

Glamping is one of the fastest evolving industries in the world and each year sites across the UK have to consider the upgrades that will help them remain competitive. Not only in terms of customer service but uniqueness and comfort as well.

This has made glamping site owners some of the shrewdest business people in hospitality. With their eyes on the suppliers with the best deals and manufacturers keen to produce the latest and most exciting products, there is a tangible excitement in glamping for original ideas.

“While I founded the business, I was later joined

by Douglas Adamson who took the role as Anthropods Executive Chairman,” Rik tells us, “Douglas’ roots are in communications and he runs a number of successful marketing and advertising companies.”

ANTHROPODS. AN ORIGINAL IDEA. Anthropods are the brainchild of Rik Currie and are stylish, reliable and safe. These are, of course, important aspects in today’s safety-obsessed culture. Glamping as a whole has had to come to terms with this and the fact that as creative as you want to get with your accommodation, it has to be safe. And you cannot get a higher level of safety and reliability than from a man who designed trains for Nederelandse Spoorwegen.

Douglas also brought a wealth of experience of the glamping sector as he has been actively involved in it through his Chairmanship of a conservation charity in the Yorkshire Dales. He is also Chairman of Settle Stories which is an arts-based charity in Settle.

“Like all good ideas, Anthropods germinated for a number of years and was in development since December 2017,” Rik says, “However it officially launched

WHAT MAKES ANTHROPODS DIFFERENT? It is well-established that glamping relies on unique locations that can combine rustic areas and unique scenery with comfort, luxury and privacy.

By making flexible use of space and with each pod including a range of quality fit-out options that suit a range of markets, Anthropods meets these criteria and has the potential to go beyond glamorous camping.

BUSINESS EVOLUTION All businesses evolve with the shifting trends and tastes of clients but Anthropods’ evolution over the last year has been unique and representative of two things. Firstly, the pace at which the glamping market is ready to develop given the opportunity, and secondly the readiness of the business to provide said opportunities.

Rik explains that by combining a creative flair with sound design principles, Anthropods addresses the needs of luxury glamping, camping and additional hotel space.

“Clients want to impress their guests,” Rik says, “And we’ve been asked for all kinds of designs for both businesses and individuals. Including pods stacked on top of pods, pods linked with glass walkways and pods in some very unique locations and it’s been a challenge to see how we can make them work. The important thing, as a manufacturer is to turn the beautifully crazy ideas of our clients into functional reality.”

They have also been building up their network of suppliers, agents, contractors and relationships with the media too.

“The key is the adaptability of Anthropods,” he says, explaining further that the Anthropods are easily customizable and can provide multiple levels of accommodation. For example, it can be used as a work-friendly home office or even a utilitarian base in disaster relief environments or military theatres of operations.

“The Pod’s flexibility goes even further as the unique leg configurations, which are a registered design, makes Anthropods stable on uneven

make the Anthropods work. Furthermore, their graphic design, web design and communications teams are built of people that they’ve either worked with in the past, or family connections.

“A few of our Angel investors are entrepreneurial friends who have bought shares in the business,” Rik reveals, “They’ve heard us talking about Anthropods and wanted to support the venture.

Ultimately, we want to work with people who are as invested in this business as we are and committed to making it a long-term success.”

They realized fairly early on that there’s a huge appetite for contemporary structures such as Anthropods, outside of the UK. Duly, they’ve cast their gaze a little wider than was originally intended in the early days. Rik is happy with these sorts of developments however as he knows the value of updating business plans and keeping ideas on the boil.

THE PEOPLE VALUE Relationships have proven to be paramount for growing Anthropods. Rik explains that word of mouth and recommendations are the foundation of any SME and that it’s so important to be aware of the impact a great relationship can have.

“Having the right relationship with the right person can literally change the trajectory of a business overnight,” Rik says.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PRODUCT

He also reveals that there is a really interesting community of people and like-minded businesses out there who are willing to help start-ups hit those all-important initial targets.

Rik and Douglas know the value of enthusiastic talent and from an engineering and construction perspective they work with a significant number of talented individuals and companies. Some of these include the likes of Lesko Modular Group Ltd, based in Peterborough, which supplements the output of Anthropods’ factory in North Yorkshire, Taplanes which supplies the wet rooms/bathrooms and Create CNC who undertake all of their profile cutting.

“However, from a more extrinsic point of view, it’s our intention to work closely and continue building relationships with content creators and media houses such as The Lost Executive, the wider media landscape and of course organizations at a grassroots level like the CLA.” Rik adds.

As with any start-up, it takes a village of people to get things off the ground. Rik reveals that through its early days to now, Anthropods has had support from both family and friends in the form of moral encouragement and day-to-day operations. Rik’s Dad, who is now in his 80s, was an engineer himself and has been instrumental in helping to stress test ideas and thinking up ways in which to

“For example, Taplanes went the extra mile to get our integrated wet room unit that included a toilet, basin and shower, ready for the Glamping Show,” Rik says, “And our manufacturing partners Lesko Leisure and Camping shared space with us at the influential Holiday Park and Resort Innovation Show at the NEC. This helped us be financially savvy during what could have been an expensive weekend.”

KEEPING AHEAD

INSPIRATION

Rik is no stranger to the demands of a competitive market and as a team they all make a concerted effort to spend time engaging with peers and authorities in the market via Instagram and other social platforms.

Rik’s background as an engineer heavily influenced his vision for Anthropods. He saw a gap in the market for a micro-dwelling and an opportunity to create a flexible living space which was sustainable.

The Pod is made (where possible) using sustainable materials. This includes such things as Western Red Cedar wood for their exteriors which require no maintenance and is naturally insect repellent, recycled polypropylene is used for the bathroom units and recycled plastic bottles make a highly efficient insulation material.

“Social media is the best way to see at a glance what’s going on in the world and to take the temperature in terms of what our audience is responding to,” he says in recommendation.

“We also read a number of blogs, magazines and sites such as The Logbook as well as follow glamping and modular building publications and design innovation media. We of course monitor competitive activity, particularly from abroad.”

2019 So far, the best received Anthropod was the aptly titled Daddy Long Legs which stands at five metres and offers a very boutique accommodation that inspires as well as impresses.

LISTENING TO CLIENTS Following consumer feedback there have been 80 minor modifications and improvements introduced to the pods and they are already designing Anthropods that can be more easily transported into export markets via containers. Additionally, they are looking at different market sectors like hotel accommodation space and education and corporate hospitality. Rik explains there are also a few big markets that are ripe to be tapped into within the hire sector for festivals and sporting events.

While more of these sorts of products are going to be designed over 2019, a primary focus is on marketing and distribution strength.

“We are setting up a series of agencies and distribution deals in Europe, Indonesia and other overseas markets,” Rik reveals, “Concurrently we are streamlining our manufacturing capabilities to ensure that our efficiency continues to improve ahead of our growth.”

VALLEY VIEWS GLAMPING

THE LOCATION

Valley Views opened in Waitaki Valley, North Otago, New Zealand on the 3rd February 2017 and was founded by Amber and Patrick Tyrrell.

Patrick is originally from South Africa and has a background in Civil Engineering while Amber grew up on a farm in the Waitaki Valley. The pair of them met in Israel while backpacking around the world in 1992. Fifteen years later, after a stay at a glamping site in a private game reserve in the Eastern Cape of South Africa they decided to share their beautiful spot in the Waitaki Valley with others.

Two full time and three part-time staff members keep the place running and everyone is employed locally. What is really special about the place is the Expansive South Island mountain and stunning Waitaki Valley views. Located in a typical New

THE STAY Valley Views has three geodesic dome tents, two lotus belle tents and one cabin. Each dome tent can sleep a maximum of four adults (or two adults and two children), the Lotus Belle Tents can sleep two adults and one child, while the cabin can fit a maximum of a couple with a child (or 2 adults).

Eco Beach was founded by Karl Plunkett, after a fishing trip to Cape Villaret in 1993 left a lasting impression upon him. It’s understandable really as the area is known for its wondrous rugged beauty and its long and colourful history.

Over 70% of the retreat was built from recycled or reused materials. This includes galvanised screws, nuts and bolts and even 1400 railway sleepers used for the walkway.

Karl who is originally from the Isle of Man and already had two successful backpacker resorts under his belt, was keen to help pioneer Australia’s green travel movement and set about creating his remote eco-tourism “getaway”. He negotiated a lease from the government, gained permissions from the Yawuru aborigines and erected the first timbers of his project in October 1995. The simple design of the hut served as a prototype until July 1996 when it was refined by Perth based architect Paul Meschiati and was opened officially with 20 elevated timber chalets all linked by raised wooden boardwalks. It has grown and diversified significantly since those early days.

PORTUGAL NATURE LODGE Peaceful, solitary and a perfect escape from our ever increasingly busy lifestyles, we need more places like Portugal Nature Lodge. Founded in 2009 by Peter a bicycle mechanic and Joke an IT project manager the purpose behind the lodge was to offer these exact three things to others, following how they escaped and discovered them themselves.

ACCOMMODATION There are four accommodations on site. One South African style safari tent, one family sized lodge tent and two Mongolian yurts. All of the tents have their unique atmosphere but what makes Portugal Nature Lodge particularly unique is the private space and the fantastic view all the tents enjoy.

ORCHARD PODS in Kent, United Kingdom Rob and Becky Malcolm founded Orchard Pods in May 2017 on Barfield Farm. Forming the setting for their piece of glamping heaven, Barfield has retained all of its unspoiled rustic charm and beauty. Farmed by the Malcolm family since the 1930s, Barfield Farm continues to produce cherries, apples, pears, currants, raspberries, gooseberries, the odd plum and mulberries.

There are also thriving Kent cob trees dotted throughout.

A unique bed and breakfast or short break experience for couples and young families which is also dog friendly. After one season in 2018 demand exceeded their available occupancy. Soft rugs adorn the floor and from the bed the views that are available could inspire novels. KASBAH DU TOUBKAL Something Truly Unique

it offers a brief glimpse of what work was put into this one-of-a-kind hotel. Not to mention the magnificent and daily efforts by the staff to ensure the guest’s utmost comfort.

There is a great story behind Kasbah du Toubkal, which sits high above the village of Imlil in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco about sixty kilometres from Marrakech. With Jbel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa forming the backdrop to the hotel it offers not only consummate comfort and the best Moroccan food, but also the kinds of views and fresh air that you simply cannot find elsewhere.

THE ROOMS AND STAFF Imlil, and its surrounding valleys, is very secluded, peaceful and utterly separate from city life. At the award-winning hotel there are fourteen comfortable en-suite rooms, three of which can be used as a private self-contained house. IMPORTANT WORK To ensure the Kasbah retains its close links with the local community, Discover Ltd. was instrumental in setting up the Imlil Village Association that is funded by the hotel. Thanks to them they were able to build a hammam which is the region’s first community steam bath and recently assisted in the construction of a school for 80 children in an outlying valley. Over above this it has also been able to instigate a much-needed rubbish disposal system and provide the region’s very first ambulance and driver.

AWARDS WON THE BERBER CULTURE

Due to its unique approach to tourism, Kasbah du Toubkal has won numerous travel awards. While it is certainly a standalone example of providing the best location and comfort, it was also restored very sympathetically to its original design so that guests often believe it to be a hundred years old. It is mentioned on their site that this is an approach that has been followed in Morocco since His Majesty, King of Morocco set it as a regional standard, ensuring other developments follow but do not sever the connection to the past.

From humble beginnings to their current position as a leading innovative force in the Ugandan industry we spoke with Tim Grover, regarding the why and the how.

DISTINGUISHED BY QUALITY

Tim Grover worked in international development and then as a lodge manager for three different Ugandan lodges before setting up Buffalo Safari Camps. According to him, the main thing that distinguishes Buffalo Safari Camps from their competition, of which is there is plenty in Uganda, is quality. He explains, “To provide the best wilderness camping you have to have highly trained guides and equally talented safari chefs.

The mind reacts best to new and engaging sights and sounds but the body runs on a full stomach.

You need both.”

With special attention to the details of the experiences that the clients are wanting to enjoy while on their African adventure, each safari is bespokely designed and shaped around the conversations had before anything is planned.

Uganda, not unlike its neighboring countries in the region, benefits from an almost overwhelming wealth of natural heritage, sights and wildlife.

Part of the task, Tim reveals is managing the expectations of the clients because even on their longest safari of three weeks, it is simply impossible to see everything that the country has to offer.

This kind of business acumen is learnt through experience and has been gained through their focus on continuous business building and development. Their business began with camping trips to Kidepo Valley NP and university and volunteer groups that Tim reveals gave them their grounding in providing catered safari camps.

“Each safari is merely a portion of Uganda,” Tim says, “We engineer the safari based on what we know the client wants and our experience of where, when and how to make it happen. Every new client benefits from a custom created package following our well investigated routes and tracks that we know will bring them as close to things as possible. We update them every year to keep with the changing landscape and so we don’t cause any damage with overuse.”

“Since then, while we still do that side of things, we have grown into a provider of great value camping experiences that incorporate our unique Ugandan bell tents, the more traditional lodge safaris, for travelers on a budget and for those on the top end.”

Part of their appeal is that Buffalo Safari Camps caters to a wide range of individuals and groups.

Ranging from university, volunteer and missionary groups, honeymooners, birders, adventurers, families and individual traditional safari goers. It is uncommon to find one business that can offer such a wide range and Tim believes this is one of the things that makes them unique. The other is the tight family ethos of the holds Buffalo Safari Camps together.

responsibilities overlooked by many. These responsibilities include producing highly trained staff, ensuring comprehensive public liability insurance, conducting fit for purpose E.U standard risk assessments and first aid training.

“We are very tight-knit, the shareholders are friends and all the staff socialize together as well as work together,” Tim says, “It makes for a strong team spirit and this translates directly as value to the client.”

“We are now entering our fifth year of providing safari services to over 200 of their volunteers each year,” Tim relates, “We also build relationships outside our direct area of business, for example being a longtime supporter of our local rugby team and involved in youth development.”

THE STAFF There are eight staff and the training that they are provided with in areas such as 4x4 driving skills, first aid, safari guiding, birding, catering and even accountancy is evidence of the standards that are expected. Tim reveals that they only recruit locally and earning the trust and loyalty of the staff is the key to a happy business.

SHIFTING TRENDS Besides their membership in the Association of Uganda Tour Operators and their dissemination of product information in Uganda, Tim explains that it is mandatory for all of their staff to undertake familiarization visits at least twice a year. This involves visiting their marketed destinations in order that they can be sure that they’re offering the right product, activity and accommodation options to their clients.

“We provide as high a quality of training as possible,” he says, “For example the level of driver training is the highest in Uganda and we’ve a great family atmosphere in the company. The fact that we have been able to build on the strengths from our original staff is something we are very proud of.”

non-tax paying companies who, from an industry standard, bring a bad light to those authorized businesses. The issue with these cowboy safaris is that without the proper certifications, they put their clients at risk as much as themselves.

And some of these businesses have also been associated with illegal matters in the country.

Frequent field visits to ensure that their product remains relevant, friendly relationships with their competitors and of course always getting thorough feedback on all aspects of their services from their clients is crucial to the business. To ensure this happens smoothly they recently employed an IT consulting company to modernize their website and keep it and their social media presence up to date.

“There is only one real way to deal with all of this of course,” Tim points out, “You just have to keep good business control, tick all the boxes and be better than them.”

“We live in a social world driven by communication,” he says, “You have to be able to communicate with your clients immediately nowadays.”

FAIR TRADE AND FAIR RETURNS As the only tour company in Uganda that is Fair Trade approved, they donate to Uganda Conservation Foundation, Water Compass and East African Playgrounds, and support Jinja Hippos rugby club, a much-loved communitybased organization.

INSPIRATION And what was the inspiration to build the business in the first place? Tim reveals that the real beginning of Buffalo Safari Camps can be traced back to their time doing camping trips to Kidepo.

“At the time the area was really accessible only by flying in, but we had fallen in love with the place and we thought it could be done on a budget,” he says, “Then our clients asked if we could provide the same services elsewhere and of course we obliged them, and our business has grown from there. All our guys are still energized by safaris, animals, culture and birds and just love sharing their beautiful country.”

Informally they have also committed to the elimination of all single use plastics in their safaris and plant two trees for every client. The trees are planted as part of a number of sustainable, mixed forestry/farming projects under the guidance of Greening Uganda, a local NGO. Tim says, “It is all of our responsibility to sustain the world around us and little things like this make all of the difference.”

“We work in a field highly influenced by the media and the news,” Tim explains, “If an Ebola outbreak in West Africa occurs or a Zika Virus outbreak in Brazil, it has the effect of reducing visiting numbers because of lowkey global panic. Officially founded in 2010, Rweetera Safari Park has since become one of Uganda’s most rewarding destinations to explore. The purpose of the tree planting activity is to realize multiple socioeconomic and environmental benefits like climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, local community development and soil erosion control.

KIBALE TOURS A comprehensive Ugandan Experience

The best way to protect the natural heritage of this planet is to engage and educate people. With this in mind, the usual safari starts with a pick up from the airport and a transfer to the accommodation. This is where the tour really begins because without having to worry about how they’re getting their luggage to their rooms, guests can enjoy the pleasant trip and a worryfree introduction to Uganda.

Safaris usually last up to 7 days and itineraries are provided ahead of time so guests have a good idea of what they should expect. This also includes where they will be going, what they are likely to see and what they should bring.

Peter explains that building up a business such as his requires a passion for adventure and a dedication to conservation, “These are at the heart of what we do,” he says.

It has taken him over three years to build the business to where it is now, at a point where he can share the joy of his home country to guests while also contributing back to the community.

By sharing awareness and educating, changing opinions and opening eyes he can do his part to safeguard the future of what he sees as the natural wealth of the country.

“It is important that people talk about issues,” Peter says, “For the Ugandan tourist industry to continue to grow it needs to improve several aspects such as infrastructure, roads and health centers.

These changes will only come about with people speaking openly about the importance of them and leveraging the audience available thanks to social media.”
