From Awareness to Action: My Transition to a Meat-Free Life by Donna Shunk
The decision to give up meat didn’t come from a single moment of inspiration. It was more of a slow, transformative process—one that began with a growing awareness and led to a profound shift in how I viewed the world and my role in it. It’s a journey I didn’t expect to take, but now that I’m on it, I can’t imagine turning back. As noted by Donna Shunk, for years, I lived a typical omnivorous lifestyle, consuming meat without giving it much thought. Like many, I had grown up eating meat regularly, and it was deeply ingrained in my culture and daily habits. However, as I began to educate myself on the ethical, environmental, and health-related consequences of meat consumption, I found myself grappling with a conflict between my values and my actions. It all started with a simple question: Where does the meat come from? This seemingly innocent inquiry opened a door I wasn’t prepared to walk through. I began watching documentaries and reading up on factory farming, and the images of suffering, overcrowded animals in cruel conditions disturbed me. These were living beings with emotions, instincts, and the capacity to suffer—yet they were treated as commodities. The realization left me deeply conflicted, and eventually, I knew I could no longer ignore the truth.
