This Month’s

ISSUE

The Drought in South Africa! The continuing drought in South Africa is persisting with very little in the way of welcoming rains falling. Several cities and towns water supply sources are literally running dry. In the East London area we have so far been reasonably unaffected, I cannot recall when last we had severe water restrictions such as Port Elizabeth and Cape Town are currently experiencing. So how does a drought like this affect you. For one due to severe pressure on the Agricultural Sector, many food prices are going up. This also affects our countries economy as a whole by reduced quantity and quality of Agricultural Exports. While the government has been working well to try supply rural communities with water, many villages often only have one tap for people to share, what happens when that tap runs dry. Many of you are studying Water and Reticulation, or Agriculture. These fields are becoming essential for the future of our country and all it’s people. The career you chose can make a difference to countless peoples lives, by providing essential services they need to survive and thrive.

Firstly we need to protect what we have. Leaking pipes and taps need repair. Encouraging communities to install more water tanks to harvest rainfall. Construction of pipelines to supply water to dryer areas has to happen. Small things, like the removal of alien invassive trees from our water courses such as the Black Wattle and Blue Gum help to improve the water catchment areas. The protection of wetlands and agricultural methods that combat soil erosion are all crucial for our future. Irrigation methods and developing drought resistant crops are also key issues. So be inspired, you can make a difference to the future of our beloved South Africa

News

Improved Communication Asante-Umso has taken several positive steps to improve its marketing as well as it’s internal and external communication. As East London Web Design we have been appointed this task, which is both an honour and a challenge. The final website changes should be completed shortly as well as the creations of a facebook page and a blog. Watch this space for the exact details. As mentioned previously, if you have any ideas, or you go on a practical assignment, please forward any text or pictures that can help share the experience with others. Change is often inevitable, but change for the better is a goal we aim to make a reality this year. Many Thanks Donovon Couzens East London Web Design

Parting Shots Who would have though a class could have fun while installing a new pipe, learning about the practical nature of work and posing for photos at the same time.
