We’ve now had two defeats at home. We feel we were unfortunate in both those games, but there is a real determination now to get back to winning ways in front of our own fans.

Gavin Baldwin Welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium for what will be a day of celebration. Today is the result of a lot of people’s hard work, and I would like to take a moment to reflect and thank them.

The staff at the Keepmoat Stadium deserve a lot of praise, too. Come down to the ground any evening and it is packed with activity, and it takes a really hard-working staff force willing to go the extra mile to keep that running smoothly. We often get praise from visitors, and the benefits of that were seen when Sky were so happy with the help they got from us they came back for a second televised game.

Finally, the most important people at this club continue to be you. We recognise that supporters are the lifeblood of any club, and we strive to ensure everything we do is designed with you in mind.

I would also like to welcome the directors, supporters, players and staff of Exeter City who have made the long journey north. I hope you enjoy the day and have a safe journey home.

The first-team manager, Darren Ferguson, has built a dedicated and focused backroom staff. The determination from everyone at the Cantley Park training ground this season has been second to none - a truly united team. The players have to go out and perform on the pitch, but it is their efforts on the training pitches which really set them up for success.

This all comes from the strategic drive set out by the owners. Their vision for what Club Doncaster could become is incredibly exciting, and is what motivates our staff to keep trying to better themselves. We are making good progress on these plans, and right now I am working with them and the manager to ensure our on-field recruitment this summer is right.

join forces with (AAA) screening programme Doncaster Rovers and Club Doncaster Foundation have joined forces with South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw NHS Foundation Trust’s abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening programme to host a series of pilot health screening clinics, in a bid to protect its older male fans from the life threatening condition.

An AAA is a swelling of the main blood vessel in the body, the aorta, which weakens and expands.

There are no symptoms and if left untreated the swelling can lead to a rupture and risk of death from internal bleeding.

The first of the three AAA screening clinics kicks-off on home turf at the Keepmoat Stadium on 04 May 2017. Rovers are urging all of their male f ans over the age of 65 to get in touch with the AAA screening team and book an appointment for the clinics.

Michelle Keefe, AAA screening programme co-ordinator for South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw, said: “It’s great that Doncaster Rovers are supporting the NHS AAA screening programme. In England and Wales there’s approximately 3,000 deaths each year in men aged 65 and over from ruptured AAAs. “So it’s so important to take up the offer of screening, the simple five minute ultrasound scan of the abdomen can save lives and you get the results straight away.”

Club Doncaster Foundation’s health and wellbeing officer, Nick Gillott, said: “Promoting the AAA screening programme to our fans is something we as a Foundation and club are very passionate about in order to keep them healthy. I am aware that AAAs can have no signs or symptoms so it’s paramount that men aged 65 and over have the screening – it can be a life saver.”

Men are invited for AAA screening by letter once they turn 65, but men over 65 who have not previously been screened can make an appointment by contacting the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw AAA Screening programme on 01709 649100 or by emailing dbh-tr.dbhaaa@nhs.net.

PFA Community champion for 2016/17 Matty Blair has been named PFA Community Champion for 2016/17 after an incredible season of community work across the region.

Matty has embraced the challenge of being a role model for the people of Doncaster, inspiring the next generation on regular player visits.

The award was introduced by the PFA last year for all clubs in the English Football League as a way of raising awareness of the fantastic work done across communities.

His work for Club Doncaster Foundation has been outstanding, engaging with participants from across the four areas – heath and wellbeing, NCS, schools participation and education.

Matty has been recognised for the countless hours dedicated to player visits within the Foundation, schools and community centres.

“It’s a proud feeling for me to be presented with it, but mainly I just hope I am impacting the lives of people in Doncaster. If anyone feels I can make a difference just by showing my face somewhere, then I’m happy to do it.”

“This accolade is a true reward for his efforts in engaging with the community.”

STUDENTS FROM HUNGERHILL SCHOOL took centre stage

Students from Hungerhill School took centre stage at the Keepmoat Stadium earlier this month as they graced the field at half time with a dance performance during the game against Mansfield Town.

The Cre8ive Dance team will now go through the same process in other schools, working with them for six weeks before the dancers take their new skills and put them into action on a matchday.

They are part of the partnership between Club Doncaster Foundation’s Doncaster Kicks project and Cre8ive Dance Academy to produce a series of Rovers matchday routines.

Community co-ordinator for Kicks, Mark Cooper, commented: “It’s great to see that this partnership is working so well; this is our second performance at the Keepmoat Stadium, with our second school and they’ve both been fantastic, so I can’t wait to see the rest of them.

The partnership includes six-week periods with different schools to create and learn a dance that will be performed during half time of Doncaster Rovers games.

Cre8ive Dance tutor Paige Singer said: “The girls at Hungerhill gave up their lunchtime every Thursday for six weeks and worked extremely hard. The routine came together in the final week and they smashed it at the matchday performance.

“Cre8ive Dance Academy are looking forward to meeting the next set of students ready to work on another urban style dance piece."

“You can see that the girls love every minute of the tutoring and dancing in front of thousands of people. It really is a one off experience to be able to dance on the Keepmoat Turf so we’re delighted with how it’s panning out.”

James COPPINGER James Coppinger feels like he could play forever. The man who has played more than |500 competitive games for Doncaster Rovers, among a career which has seen him turn out well over 600 times, has no intention of hanging up his boots anytime soon.

He turned 36 a few months ago and, playing at the tip of Rovers’ midfield diamond, is putting in performances as good as any he has ever produced

“It has been the most enjoyable season in that respect for me personally, being able to get on the ball and do all the things I want to do,” he says.

“The manager allows me that freedom, and the players behind me and in front of me complement me and do a lot of work which allows me to be that player.

“I’ve been picked in the EFL and PFA Teams of the Season and nominated for Player of the Season.

It’s what I needed to be doing because, at this age, if you’re not performing people will shoot you down and finish you off.

“But I’m just enjoying my football. I’ll go into next season focused on doing well for the club and that’s the only thing I can do. I can’t see myself going to anyone else in the EFL, but I want to play as long as I can. As long as I am contributing to the team, I’ll stay as long as I can.”

Nine goals have been forthcoming this term, with plenty of assists as well, as Rovers secured promotion back to Sky Bet League One. As someone who has been a Rovers player since

and straight away won League Two. Momentum, belief, confidence are all important if you want to be successful – for us, going into League One, we’ll have a good enough squad to compete.

“It was the hardest year I’ve had, being relegated to League Two. It was difficult, but to bounce back at the first time of asking is great – clubs like Portsmouth and Plymouth have been in it for a few seasons which shows how hard it is,” he says.

“We’ve players who have played at League One level and higher, and young lads who have come in and done really well. We’ve got good strength in depth which will stand us in good stead next season.”

“We’ve found a way of playing which suits the players in the team, and collectively we have stuck together. Everybody wants to improve and do well for each other, and that stands out.”

Although there is a clear frustration at o nly picking up one point since automatic promotion is secured, there remains a belief among the players that the title is there for the taking – and that would set the club up to start next season well.

“As a team we set out to get promoted as the main objective, and we’ve been successful in doing that. Now, we’ve got two games left to try and seal the title,” says Coppinger.

“It is in our own hands - we are two points ahead with two games left, and could win the league this weekend. We’ve had a fantastic season, and hopefully we can celebrate soon enough.

“Momentum helps us, you’ve seen that here before when we came up from the Conference

Given how long Coppinger has spent at Rovers, it is hard to imagine him turning out for anyone else. But, after starting his career at Darlington, he can count Newcastle, Hartlepool and today’s opponents Exeter City among his former clubs.

Coppinger spent two years at St James Park before moving back north to Doncaster. He is delighted to see his former side doing well, and thinks his time on the south coast was vital for his development as a player and person.

“It was a difficult time for the club, they were going through a real transitional period and were relegated out of the Football League,” he adds.

“It was a difficult time for me, I had lost my grandad and moved away form home for the first time – it was a testing time for me.

“It was probably the hardest two years of my life in football, but I got through it and learnt a lot from the things I did wrong there. I wish I’d had the mentality there that I did when I moved to Doncaster.

“So it’s so good to see them back in the EFL, doing well and challenging. It may be, a bit like us last summer, that they benefitted from going down and restructuring then coming back.”

01 | BOBBY OLEJNIK

After moving over to England from Austria, Bobby Olejnik signed for Premier League side Aston Villa in 2006, he would only stay for a season at Villa Park before moving up to Scotland to join Falkirk.

The top stopper was originally the second choice goalkeeper behind Tim Krul, Olejnik got his chance in the limelight as Krul returned to his parent club Newcastle United after suffering an injury to a shoulder.

Olejnik managed to make than 100 league appearances for the Bairns before heading back to England to join at-the-time League Two side Torquay United.

In his only season with the Gulls the keeper was included in the PFA’s League Two Team of the Year, alongside three of his Torquay United team-mates.

Rovers manager Darren Ferguson signed him for Peterborough United in 2012 after his impressive season on the South coast, he earned the club’s Player of the Season award after his second season at London Road.

He has also played for Scunthorpe United and York City before signing for Exeter City in 2015.

After spending majority of his footballing career in the lower leagues of English football, David Wheeler signed for League Two Exeter City in 2013.

The midfield maestro started his life as a footballer with Lewes in 2007, making his first league appearance against Torquay United in the following season.

He was given a standing ovation on his final game for Lewes, he would go onto sign for Staines Town in 2011.

During his first season with Staines, he was awarded with the Player’s Player and Club Player of the Year trophies, the following season he found the back of the net on 14 occasions which helped the Swans survive relegation.

He went on to captain the club during his second and final season, it would also see him pick up the same two awards as he had already won the season previously.

Exeter City boss Paul Tisdale is the second longest serving manager in English football, behind Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger.

Originally from Malta, Tisdale, decided to start his footballing career in England with Southampton, after progressing through the Saints’ youth academy before turning professional in 1991.

During his time at Southampton, the midfielder was loaned out to Huddersfield Town and Northampton Town, upon his return to the Saints he managed to score his only league goal for the side, against Manchester City.

Tisdale, played for FinnPa in Finland and Panionios in Greece before returning to England to play for Exeter City and Yeovil Town before officially retiring from football in 2014.

His managerial career would begin with Team Bath, which see him lead the side to back-to-back-to-back promotions, moving from the Western League Division One all the way up to the Southern Premier League.

In his first season as Exeter boss, Tisdale, lead the Grecians to the Conference play-off final but they were beaten 2-1 by Morecambe that season, however they would be victorious a season later with a 1-0 win over Cambridge United.

With Exeter back in the Football League they went on to do the unthinkable and get promoted to League One at the first time of asking, finishing second to Brentford.

DEFENSIVE ROCK Defender Craig Woodman has been an Exeter City player since the beginning of the 2012/13 league season, after signing on a free transfer from Brentford.

He originally began his career with Bristol City in 2000 after coming through the side’s youth academy, Woodman made his professional debut against Plymouth Argyle in a Football League Trophy fixture that same year.

During his time at Ashton Gate he was loaned out to fellow Football League clubs, firstly Mansfield Town and then Torquay United in two separate stints with the Gulls.

Woodman’s next destination was Wycombe Wanderers, he became a key player at the club only missing 10 minutes of league action during the Chairboys promotion winning season in 2009.

Before joining the Grecians, Woodman spent two seasons at Griffin Park with Brentford, scoring one goal in 59 league appearances.

Deadly striker Ollie Watkins has been one of Exeter’s prized possessions this season, as he has fired the Grecians into the Sky Bet League Two play-off places.

Watkins has been an Exeter player since the age of nine, joining their academy in 2004, after making his way through the ranks he signed a professional contract in April 2014.

He made his Football League debut a month later, leading the line against Hartlepool in a 2-0 win at Victoria Park.

This season, Watkins has been played a pivotal part in Exeter’s season, which has seen him score his first career hat-trick, in a 4-1 win over Newport County at Rodney Parade.

He was presented with the Sky Bet League Two Player of the Month award for January beating our very own John Marquis to the prize, Watkins also scooped the English Football League Young Player of the Year award at the EFL awards in London.

At the end of season awards he scooped the Players’ Player and the Supporters Player of the Year trophies, he went on to appear more than 120 times for Wycombe.

James COPPINGER James Coppinger began his career with Darlington, before moving to Premier League side Newcastle United along with Paul Robinson. He made one top flight appearance before moving on to Exeter City in 2002.

He made his debut against Shrewsbury Town that August, before scoring his first goal for the club two weeks later against Torquay United.

After his two seasons with the Grecians, Coppinger was brought to Rovers by Dave Penney. More than 500 competitive appearances later, he is still here.

One of Coppinger’s most memorable games in a Rovers shirt was undoubtedly the 5-1 victory over Southend United at the Keepmoat Stadium, which saw the midfielder score a hat-trick, which was described as “three goals of the highest quality” by the Sky Sports commentary team.

Coppinger is one of Rovers‘ most valued players, his willingness, commitment and desire has seen him become the club captain.

He also celebrated his 500th competitive appearance for Doncaster with a goal in Rovers’ 5-1 victory over Morecambe at the Globe Arena.

FEATURE ommy Rowe’s 74th-minute goal against Mansfield Town sealed promotion, but it was the culmination of months of hard work from many involved at the club.

From the first day of pre-season, when fitness coach Ben Rome had the players sweating in the sun at Cantley Park, there has been a steely determination that this season would end with an elevation to Sky Bet League One. From the board of directors, whose vision for what Club Doncaster could become leads the way, to every member of staff answering the phones, making tea or tidying up after matches, the sense of unity has stood out. It is noticeable the bond between supporters and the club is the best it has been for years.

He has lost none of his determination to finish the season in style to try and win the league. Although Rovers’ following outing, the Good Friday trip to Colchester United, brought a sluggish start from the players, he does not see any drop in motivation from the players.

“I don’t have to worry about keeping the lads focused to be honest they are a level-headed bunch,” he said.

“The main focus for us is to go on and win the league, we are determined to show people that we are the best team in this league.”

Rovers fans have had to be patient at times this season, understanding the approach the team have taken, and that is something the manager also feels has been reflected at board level.

The relief when promotion was secured was palpable.

The tunnel and home dressing room afterwards were left a sticky mess after the Champagne provided by league sponsors Sky Bet got a great airing.

“The board deserve an enormous amount of credit, “ he added.

“We are all extremely happy and everyone could see from the celebrations how much it meant to us,” said club captain Andy Butler.

“They realised we needed to change quite a lot, and trusted me to do it. Thankfully, I have repaid them. I have a great relationship with all of them and the chief executive Gavin Baldwin is outstanding. The trust we have with the board helps everyone at the club.”

“I’m delighted that we could celebrate it with the home fans, we saw Burton here last year parade in front of us, so it was nice to for the fans to get involved this time and we are hoping we can lift the league title here against Exeter.

“Promotion is one thing but at the start of the season we said we wanted to win the league and we all want to end the season with a medal around our necks.”

Manager Darren Ferguson has won promotions before as a manager, but as he and his coaching team joined in the celebrations it was clear this means as much to them as any of the players or fans.

2. The 5-1 win at Morecambe was memorable for many reasons, with James Coppinger’s 500th competitive appearance – marked with a goal – and Marquis’ Mario Kart celebrations. Matty Blair’s goal stood out, though, and Matty himself won’t know how he jumped so high!

3. Will Longbottom is a great lad and to score for Rovers was a dream come true for him. His header earned us a point against Derby County in the Checkatrade Trophy.

4. Junior Takeover Day is one of the best days of the year for staff at Rovers, and this is the first I have experienced since joining the club. Ethan , our junior media manager, was great fun to be around and enjoyed getting to pop into the home changing room beforehand – which included a few selfies with players.

5. Marquis is never afraid to put himself about on the pitch, and gets a few kicks as a result. At Newport County he needed several stitches to his forehead, but was happy to speak to a journalist after the game despite the headache he presumably had.

6. The win over Notts County felt like one which all but secured promotion. The reaction to Andy Williams’ goal was intense, and this image which shows Frenchy leaping up on top of his team-mates epitomised the real unity between the players.

7. Our photographer Phil Ryan spends so much time around the players that they really relax around him. He captured this moment of reflection after the 1-0 win over Mansfield Town which sealed promotion – pictured are analyst Adam Ridgewell, Paul Gerrard, Gavin Strachan and Darren Ferguson.

8. Paul Mayfield is someone I have been delighted to build a friendship with this season. Whether he is handing out biscuits in the press room or making people pose with the gnome, he always has a smile on his face. It was a pleasure to join him in London when he was named Supporter of the Year at the EFL Awards.

John MARQUIS ohn Marquis hopes to build on his successful start to life at Rovers in Sky Bet League One next season.

Marquis has scored 26 goals this term as Rovers sealed promotion back to the third tier, and feels manager Darren Ferguson gets the best out of him.

“I’ve played almost every minute of every league game this season, I’ve got a manager that believes in me,” he said.

“I feel my game has come on a lot over the past 10 months working with this manager and playing in a good team. I have surpassed my expectations, but still want to improve. I’m not happy with 26, I want to try and get more and next season want to recreate that in the league above.”

Marquis’ form has inevitably brought speculation about a move higher up the football pyramid, but the forward is settled at Rovers and sees his future as being at the Keepmoat Stadium.

“There’s no reason why I’d want to go anywhere else, my football has come on so much. I can’t speak highly enough of the manager and staff,” he added.

“I’ve got a contract for at least next season here. I’ve thorouaghly enjoyed my time so far, and no one has told me about any interest from any other clubs,” he said.

“As far as I’m concerned I’ve got a year left and hopefully they might want to sit down and sort a new one out, which would be nice. I’m just happy to have played the amount I have, and I’ve five games left to try and win this league.”

Then came a 2-2 draw away at Scunthorpe where goals from Lewis Scattergood and Matty Overton saw the young team overcome a 2-0 deficit to gain a share of the spoils.

Academy manager Kieran Scarff said: “The performance against Rotherham was very pleasing in terms of the players discipline in terms of their shape, their resilience and ability to deal with the physical threat of a considerably older team and the threat we then showed on the counter attack. We looked comfortable throughout and to finish the game with four under 16s on the pitch was very pleasing as they all had a positive impact on the game.

“The draw at Scunthorpe saw a very disappointing first half performance. We talk a lot about identity in terms of how we play in and out of possession and as coaches we felt our identity was not on display and the performance was not one we enjoyed watching. However there was an improvement in the second half and a real determination to get back into the game. In fact they should have gone onto win the game.

“It was disappointing for the boys to finish the league programme with a narrow defeat. The game was similar to the Scunthorpe game but the improvements in the second half didn’t bring the reward the performance perhaps deserved.

“We have been pleased with the development of next year’s group who we have deliberately put together over the past few months and we are all looking forward to the progess of these players next season”

Coming towards the end of my first season at the club I am hugely impressed with the vision and desire for the development of the club as a whole and in particular the academy programme a big thank you must go to the owners, Gavin Baldwin, Liam Scully and the manager for their superb support.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank the academy and first-team staff for their dedication and efforts. All the staff through the first team and within the Academy and the CDA, both full and part-time work tirelessly to provide excellent opportunities for all our young players. Their input is so valuable to the development of our players.

The administrative support we receive from Mary Lally and Shelley Tongue is superb. They probably deserve a medal trying to keep all of us organised!

In addition I would like to thank Sam and Vicky who look after the youth team and staff in terms of feeding us every day!

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 23- By John Coyle Having clinched the Division Three (North) Championship with a game to spare, Rovers had to wait a fortnight to celebrate their success. On Saturday 7th June 1947, at the end of a long season, Rovers took the field at Belle Vue against York City. Manager Jackie Bestall named the same team that had won at Bradford two weeks previously:

Rovers needed to score six goals to overtake the League’s then record for goals scored in a season. In the end they didn’t manage one. A rather flat performance led to a sterile 0-0 draw, only the second such result for Rovers in 1946-47. Thompson squandered the chance to secure victory, missing a second half penalty. At half time the Football League President, Mr. W. C. Cuff, presented the Championship shield to skipper Paul Todd.

Medals were also presented to the eleven players, plus Harry Tomlinson and Jim Wooldridge as well as to manager Bestall, trainer Bob McLean and club secretary Geoff Dickinson.

With the action on the field over it is worth taking time to put this remarkable season into context. Rovers’ haul of 72 points was a Football League record for the number of points gained in a season, beating Tottenham Hotspur’s 70 in 1919-20. It remained a record until 1975-76, when Lincoln City won 74 points in a season comprising 46, rather than 42 games. Since the introduction of three points for a win, Reading achieved 106 in 2005-06, again from 46 games, which would have equated to 75 points at two for a win.

Given the disparity in games, the fairest way to compare records is perhaps to take the points per game average based on three for a win. Rovers’ average in 1946-47 was an amazing 2.5 per game on this basis and only Chelsea, winners of the Premier League title in 2004-05 (95 points from 38 games) have equalled this.

In terms of individual feats, Clarrie Jordan’s tally of 42 League goals was a club record, beating Tom Keetley’s 40 in 1928-29. Paul Todd, his inside-forward partner, scored 23 and this is the highest total for a player who did not top the Rovers’ scoring charts.

Maddison, Kirkaldie and Thompson, the other regular members of the forward line all finished in double figures, the only time this has happened in Rovers’ history. It is fair to say that Jordan’s record in particular is unlikely to be beaten.

As well as the focus on Rovers’ attack, it is worth remembering that they had a superb defence. They

They found Division Two a much tougher proposition and ended season 1947-48 with relegation, having picked up only 29 points. Jordan was transferred to Sheffield Wednesday in February 1948. Nothing, however, should detract from this remarkable team and what they achieved 70 years ago.

Another record set was for away wins, eighteen in the season. This record has been equalled, by League Two Champions MK Dons in 2007-08, but never beaten. In terms of points per game (based on three for a win), Rovers tally of 2.62 points per away game is an all-time League record.

Rovers Family Doncaster Rovers Supporters Club Well we face our final home game of the season, and what a contrast from this time last year. What a fantastic season it has been, bouncing back to Sky Bet League One at the first attempt, and hopefully as champions. A big welcome to our fellow supporters from Exeter City, they have certainly turned their season around as when we played them back in November, they had not won at home all season and were hovering over the bottom spot, but Paul Tisdale has done an excellent job, and proves if the directors stick with a manager he can bring them success. On a personal note, it’s been a difficult season, thanks to all the kind messages with the loss of my partner Jill, it was so comforting, and to have several hundred rovers fans attend the funeral, also it was such a honour to receive the EFL Supporter of the year award at the Hilton Hotel in London on the 9th April an award I dedicated to Jill’s memory. It was brilliant the Darren Ferguson, John Marquis and Andy Butler also picked up well deserved awards, A night I will never forget, so proud to have my Son Daniel alongside of me, and we even got Andy Butler and Rovers staff playing bingo on the train there and back lol. Thanks again for your continued support Rovers till we die Paul Mayfield Viking Supporters Co-Operative Last month’s Meet the Owners event in the Legends Lounge at The Keepmoat was the latest in a long line of events at DRFC that show that fan engagement at DRFC is certainly very much in the DNA of the club.

The bi-annual Meet the Owners nights have always been well attended and (despite three relegations in the last five years and two failed takeover ids) in the main relatively enjoyable events where occasionally a golden nugget of information is given out by one of the top table and questions are asked by the fans that can result in changes by the club too.

The concept of Meet the Owners, the formation of a Supporters’ Board, In Rovers We Trust, initial matchday atmosphere working groups which led the way for the creation of the Black Bank within the South Stand and catering working groups are merely the tip of the iceberg. Add to this the Supporters Club meetings scattered around our town where guest speakers or representatives from the club can be found in attendance, the work the Club Doncaster Foundation and Academy are doing in the Doncaster region communities and schools and there is a clear indication of how important growing the fan-base of DRFC is to the current owners, board and CEO. Bizarrely, it was only at the start of this season that new rules were put in place that meant clubs had to engage in structured dialogue with their fans – why do some clubs need telling they have to do this – surely it is simply just good practise to do this?
