ONE COMMUNITY EFL Clubs are in the heart of communities up and down the country. Using the power of the badge, clubs help tackle some of society’s biggest issues, from helping people in poverty to combating loneliness. On Tuesday 19 March, all 72 EFL Clubs will join together for the EFL’s Day of Action to showcase the impact of the crucial work they undertake in communities up and down the country. EFL managers and players will be attending events across the country to meet people whose lives have been positively changed through the work of the club in the community.

GRANT McCANN GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM, I’D LIKE TO WELCOME THE SUPPORTERS, OWNERS, PLAYERS AND STAFF FROM BARNSLEY. THEY HAVE BEEN IMPRESSIVE THIS SEASON BUT WE GAVE THEM A RIGHT GOOD GAME AT OAKWELL AND KNOW WE ARE CAPABLE OF REPEATING THAT TONIGHT. The lads had to dig in at Blackpool on Tuesday night for a point which was a big one for us. The conditions at Bloomfield Road were not great, with wind and rain coming off the Irish Sea, and we showed the grit and determination needed to ensure we got back into the match - and very nearly took all three points. Full credit to everyone on the pitch for that.
Your backing over recent games has remained steadfast and is greatly appreciated by everyone at the club, the conditions for travel on Tuesday were not great and to have so many fans there backing us was fantastic. I’m sure we’ll get the same support tonight in a local derby and a chance to showcase ourselves in front of the TV cameras.
It is always difficult as we head into the final 10 games or so of the season, and everyone we play will be really motivated to get something out of the game - whether it is for their promotion or survival hopes. But we’ve shown our mental resolve is good and we can head into these final fixtures knowing we are in good shape.

We go into the game on the back of a really gritty performance at Blackpool on Tuesday night. The conditions at Bloomfield Road must be among the toughest our players have come across, with the wind swirling around the stadium and the rain lashing down - at times the corner flags were pretty much horizontal from being blown around! We had to show our fighting spirit in that second period, and we know at this point in the season it is sometimes about grinding out results. Everyone has so much to play for that they will simply not allow you to dominate games in the way we were able to at times earlier in the campaign. Season Membership sales for next season have been very encouraging, don’t forget that our early bird prices secure your spot regardless of what division we are in. We have been involving a number of club staff in a trial project to prove the value and secure funding, and the feedback I’ve received is that they have loved being able to take part. I’m sure the Fit Rovers scheme will continue to shine. The Fit Rovers Ladies is just the latest community project here at Club Doncaster. R E L TY H T I M S TYLER SMITH MADE THE PERFECT START TO LIFE IN A ROVERS SHIRT AFTER JOINING THE CLUB ON LOAN AT THE START OF THE JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW. The striker came on as a half-time substitute against Burton Albion, scoring twice within 20 minutes of being on the pitch and immediately announcing himself to the Rovers fans. “I’m absolutely loving my time here, it’s a challenge that I knew I needed after doing well at Barrow earlier on in the season,” he says. “I scored a few goals earlier in the season and once I went back to Sheffield United I was desperate to challenge myself at a higher level. “As soon as I knew of the interest from Rovers I wanted to get it done and come to play some football. “It was a frustrating start to my time here because I just want to be out on the pitch scoring goals, so I had to be patient.

“Once I got my chance I grabbed it with both hands and scored a couple of goals, now I want to get more and help the team push for promotion.
Smith’s upbringing and career moves have seen obvious comparisons drawn with former Rovers striker Billy Sharp, a teammate of Smith at Bramall Lane.
“Everything happened so quickly on my debut and it couldn’t have gone any better, to score two was unbelievable and I’ll take the booking for my celebration.”
He says he is keen to learn things on and off the field from a man who has now scored more goals than any other other player in the EFL.
After spending time on loan with National League side Barrow in the first part of the 2018/19 campaign, Smith caught the eye with his pace and clinical finishing. After his loan spell in Cumbria yielded 10 goals for the 20-year-old, the taste of league action is something he craved. “It is a step up for me but I have faith in myself that I can deal with it. To get where I want to be I want to be tested,” he says “Playing more games will give me that added belief that I can cut it at this level and even higher, I think that is what every young player needs. “Sheffield United and Chris Wilder have been really good with me, they’ve just told me to keep doing what I’m doing and work hard. “I feel like I’ve matured since coming here, every loan spell is different and brings out different qualities in a player. “I’m already learning a lot from John Marquis, he’s one of the best strikers in this division and it’s good to be able to work with him.”

“Once I’d started scoring a few goals at Barrow a lot of fans started calling me the next Billy Sharp which has its own pressures,” he says. “It’s nice to be compared to such a good player, but it’s important that I focus on myself and how I can improve.

“I speak to him a lot because we’re both playing for the club we support, he told me to just focus on football and everything will take care of itself. “We’re both strikers who love to score goals and it’s good to have someone who understands my game and where I want to be. “Billy has never been the quickest but he’s always in the right areas to score goals, for me I want to get in the box and the chances will come.” Rovers have a relatively young group of players, who have stepped up and helped push for a play-off place in Sky Bet League One this season. Smith says it was easy to settle into the group, and has struck up a friendship with fellow front-man Mallik Wilks. “It’s been really easy to settle in as we’ve got a really good set of lads, it helped being in and around them for a while before I played,” he says. “I spend a lot of time with Mallik and he is a really good guy to have around the place, and he’s backed that up with some great performances this season. “He made me feel welcome and it’s great to have someone I can chat to away from football through the week.
"AS A YORKSHIRE LAD I’M BUZZING FOR THIS ONE, THE CROWD IS GOING TO BE ELECTRIC BUT IT’S IMPORTANT THAT WE FOCUS ON THE GAME" “It’s good to have a couple of young lads on loan with me because they’re in a similar position to me, we’ve helped each other with the new experiences. “We’re all bonding with the more senior players and they are always happy to pass on advice, I think you can see on the pitch we’re a strong unit.” With 10 games to go ahead of this evening’s South Yorkshire derby against Barnsley in front of the Sky cameras, Rovers are ready to end the season well and secure their place in the top six. Smith is looking forward to sampling another good atmosphere at the Keepmoat Stadium, with both sides chasing promotion to the Championship. “It may take time but if you keep doing the good things and the right things, you will get to where you want to be,” he adds. “We’re all working hard every single day to carry on the good work we’ve done so far, now it’s about carrying that on until the end of the season. “As a Yorkshire lad I’m buzzing for this one, the crowd is going to be electric but it’s important that we focus on the game and look to take three points from it. “We’ve been good against teams around us, a win would give us a massive confidence boost and some momentum for the rest of the season. “I was sat in the stands against Crystal Palace wishing I was playing, against Barnsley I think we’ve got a very good chance. “It would be great if Rovers and Sheffield United both won promotion this season, as a young player it would mean everything to me.”

ADAM DAVIES TOP STOPPER
01
The goalkeeper is currently in his fifth season with the Tykes after joining them from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2014. Davies began his youth career at Everton, and he was named as the Academy Player of the Year in 2010 for the Toffees. He then went on to move on to Sheffield Wednesday in 2012, though he failed to make a single appearance for the Owls and instead made his move across South Yorkshire to Barnsley. With the Tykes, Davies won the Football League Trophy and promotion from League One via the play-offs in 2016, and he has since taken over the captain’s armband as well during his time at Oakwell. Davies qualifies to play for Wales internationally, and although he is yet to earn his first cap, he has been called up to the senior squad previously.
ALEX MOWATT MIDFIELD MAESTRO

The Doncaster-born midfielder joined Barnsley from fellow Yorkshire side Leeds United in 2017. Mowatt spent 13 years at Elland Road, coming up through the youth ranks at the club, and making his professional debut against Rovers in the second round of the League Cup in August 2013, with United winning 3-1 at the Keepmoat Stadium. He would score his first ever senior goal later on that season in a 5-1 win over local rivals Huddersfield Town and won the club’s Young Player of the Year award in his first ever season. The following season he would win both the club’s Player and Players’ Player of the Year award, though he would make his move to Oakwell just two years later. Mowatt spent time on loan at Oxford United last season, though following Barnsley’s relegation in the last campaign, he has gone on to be a key figure in the Tykes’ push for an immediate return to the Championship this time around.

ETHAN PINNOCK DEFENSIVE ROCK
The centre half joined Barnsley in 2017 following promotion from the National League with Forest Green Rovers. After time with Millwall, Pinnock dropped into non-league and joined Dulwich Hamlet, making his senior debut for them in 2010, helping them to win the Isthmian League Division One South play-offs in 2013. After making over 200 appearances for Dulwich, Pinnock joined Forest Green Rovers in 2016, spending just one season at The New Lawn, though it would be a successful stint in Gloucestershire, with Pinnock playing in the 3-1 win over Tranmere Rovers in the National League play-off final at Wembley Stadium in 2017. Pinnock joined Barnsley shortly afterwards, and he has established himself at the heart of the Tykes’ defence this season.
CAULEY WOODROW DEADLY STRIKER

The forward made his move to Oakwell a permanent one back in January following his loan from Premier League side Fulham. Woodrow spent eight years with the Cottagers, though spent much of his time out on loan away from Craven Cottage, enjoying time with Southend United, Burton Albion and Bristol City. In 2016, Woodrow would be part of the England under-21 squad that won the Toulon Tournament, making nine appearances and scoring three times in total for the Young Lions. He joined the Tykes on loan at the beginning of this season, and after impressive form, the move was made a permanent one in the recent transfer window. Woodrow also scored the equaliser when the two sides met at Oakwell earlier on in the season, snatching a point for the Tykes following Herbie Kane’s opener.

WITH SUCH A SHORT DISTANCE BETWEEN THE TWO CLUBS, IT IS PROBABLY NO SURPRISE THAT THERE A NUMBER OF CONNECTIONS BETWEEN ROVERS AND THE TYKES, BUT IT IS TWO DEFENDERS THAT ARE THE FOCUS HERE. The first defender is full-back DAVE MULLIGAN, and it would be with Barnsley where he began his professional career, making his debut in a 3-0 defeat against Manchester City in October 2001. The Tykes were relegated at the end of the 2001/02 season, but Mulligan kept his place in the side, making 34 appearances in Division Two and scoring once. After 70 appearances in all competitions for the Tykes, Mulligan was released in October 2003, and he then made the short trip across South Yorkshire, joining up with Dave Penney’s Rovers and looking to cement their promotion push. He made 14 appearances in the 2003/04 season which ultimately ended with Rovers sealing the Division Three title, and he would then sign a two-year deal at the club following the culmination of the campaign. Mulligan would also be a key figure in the Rovers’ side that reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup in the 2005/06 season as they defeated two Premier League sides on their way, beating Manchester City on penalties, before beating Aston Villa 3-0 also at Belle Vue. Following just over two years with Rovers, Mulligan would make another short move, this time to Scunthorpe United, though after just one season at Glanford Park, he would go on to join Port Vale. He would then go on to move to New Zealand, joining A League side Wellington Phoenix, before moving to Auckland City. With Auckland City, he would help them to win backto-back OFC Champions League titles, Oceania’s equivalent to Europe’s elite club competition, going on to join Waitakere United and winning a New Zealand Football Championship with the club in his first season. Mulligan is now in charge of East Coast Bays, a position he has held since 2016. Though born near Liverpool, Mulligan was a New Zealand international footballer, making 28 appearances and scoring three times for his country, also representing them at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Another defensive connection between the two sides is JASON SHACKELL, with the centre half spending time on loan at the Keepmoat Stadium from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 2009/10 season. He began his career with Norwich City, coming up through the youth ranks with the Canaries before making his professional debut for the club. He played a brief part in the Canaries promotion from Division One as champions in 2004 and made 11 appearances in the Premier League the following year.

After three more years at Carrow Road, Shackell joined Wolves in the 2008/09 season, though after just 12 league appearances in the first half of the season, he moved back to Norwich. He was unable to prevent the Canaries’ relegation to League One, though after Wolves won the Championship title in the same season, he actually ended up with a league winners’ medal having qualified with enough appearances. He joined Rovers on loan in 2009 and became a popular figure at the back amongst Rovers fans, scoring once during his time with the club, the third goal in a 3-1 home win over Peterborough United. He would then sign permanently with Barnsley the following season, and after more impressive performances in defence, he would win the club’s Player of the Year award in his one and only season. After time with Derby County, Shackell joined Burnley, being made captain at Turf Moor and he lead them to yet another promotion from the Championship, this time as runners-up in 2014, with Shackell not missing a league game that season, or the following year in the Premier League, going on to re-sign with Derby County in 2015. Shackell is now with League Two side Lincoln City, taking the captain’s armband once again and he with the Imps’ sitting in the promotion places, he looks set to lead yet another team to promotion. MEMORABLE MATCH BARNSLEY
JANUARY 17 2015 Rovers saw off local rivals Barnsley with a late winner from Harry Forrester in what was an entertaining game at the Keepmoat Stadium back in January 2015. Rovers dominated for a large part of the game and looked like they would go unrewarded for their efforts with the game looking like it would drift towards a goalless draw, but a stunner five minutes from time by Forrester saw the hosts make it three wins in five games unbeaten in League One. The hosts started brightly, with Curtis Main missing the game’s first great chance to go in front, with James Coppinger swinging the ball into the area, and Main’s effort on goal drifting just wide of the post. Main would go even closer to opening the scorer just minutes later, as he capitalised on Lewin Nyatanga’s miscontrol of Andy Butler’s ball forward. The striker went one-on-one with former Rovers keeper Ross Turnbull, however he could only curl just wide of the far post, sending a real warning to the Barnsley defence that any mistakes would go punished. Rovers began the second half like
they ended the first, with chance after chance going begging, Main and Richie Wellens would both see shots flash wide of the post, before the introduction of Forrester from the bench saw Rovers really step up their game. Within two minutes of coming on, he had seen one curling effort go just wide of the far post, and with the game ticking towards the final five minutes, he stepped up to win the game for Rovers and earn a deserved three points in the South Yorkshire derby. Forrester evaded the challenge of Mason Holgate, shrugging the defender off the ball and onto the ground, cutting inside onto his right foot and looping the ball over Turnbull and into the far corner from the edge of the area, finishing superbly from a tight angle on the edge of the area. Holgate’s afternoon would get even worse in injury time as frustrations boiled over, with the right-back going in late on Nathan Tyson, earning himself a red card after a nasty challenge from behind, and Rovers wouldn’t have to wait long for the full-time whistle to go, with referee Kevin Wright blowing the whistle shortly after, as Rovers secured a big three points.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? Rovers finished in 13th in their first season back in League One, with Barnsley finishing just above them in 11th. Rovers inconsistent run of form saw them drop away from the play-off race as they headed into March, only managing to collect three wins from their final 11 games of the season. Barnsley on the other hand enjoyed a strong period over February and March, going nine unbeaten, including six wins on the spin, and securing a 5-0 win on the final day at home to Rochdale. Rovers also gave their fans something to cheer about on the final day of the season, as they secured a 5-2 win over local rivals Scunthorpe United, with Nathan Tyson scoring a hat-trick over the Iron. Winning goal scorer Forrester would move on the following season to Rangers, becoming a key player for the Gers, helping them to reach the Scottish Premier League, before spending last season on loan with AFC Wimbledon. Barnsley defender Holgate would secure a multi-million pound move to Premier League side Everton, and he has since gone on to play for England under-21s, as well as establishing himself in the Toffees’ squad. The game would also see Alex Kiwomya make his first appearance at the Keepmoat Stadium, albeit lining up for the opposition, as he played the full 90 minutes, and he of course signed for Rovers on a permanent deal before the start of last season.

NUMBERS GAME UNLIKE ITS PREDECESSOR, THE NO. 19 SHIRT HAS HAD MANY OWNERS SINCE DONCASTER ROVERS STARTED ISSUING SQUAD NUMBERS IN 2002. THE FIRST WEARER WAS DONCASTERBORN RICKY RAVENHILL (2002-06). THE COMBATIVE MIDFIELDER ARRIVED IN 2001 AFTER PLAYING IN BARNSLEY’S YOUTH TEAM AND SOON MADE HIS MARK WITH HARD-WORKING PERFORMANCES AND STRONG TACKLING. HE MADE A TOTAL OF 158 SENIOR APPEARANCES, SCORING TEN TIMES BEFORE MOVING ON TO GRIMSBY TOWN IN 2006. HIS SON, LIAM, IS CURRENTLY IN ROVERS’ YOUTH ACADEMY. Classy midfielder BRIAN STOCK (2006-07) was allocated the No. 19 after arriving, initially on loan, from Preston North End. He moved on to the No. 8 shirt and the No. 19 was taken over by another quality midfield man in RICHIE WELLENS (2007-09, 2013-15). Wellens started his career with Manchester United before joining Blackpool and Oldham Athletic. He moved to Rovers in 2007 and was instrumental in the club gaining promotion to the Championship following a play-off final victory over Leeds United in May 2008. Wellens’ classy displays in the Championship earned him a move to Leicester City where he was Player of the Year for 2009-10. In August 2013 he re-joined Rovers who had just returned to the Championship after an absence of only one season. He gave some outstanding performances, but his injury towards the end of the season coincided with a run where Rovers gained only one point from seven games and were relegated. He eventually moved to Shrewsbury Town in January 2016, having made 199 senior appearances for Rovers and scored 15 goals. The No. 19 shirt passed through a succession of on-loan owners, DAVID HEALY (2010), JASON EUELL (2011), REECE BROWN (2011) and JON PARKIN (2011). Of these Northern Ireland’s record goalscorer Healy, who scored twice in eight games, made the most impact. The mercurial Senegal international striker EL-HADJI DIOUF (2011-12) wore the shirt when first joining Rovers before opting to take the No. 10 from the departing Billy Sharp, and FREDERIC PIQUIONNE (2012) wore 19 for the rest of the season. Piquionne, who arrived after spells with Portsmouth and West Ham United, had the unusual distinction of representing two countries, France and Martinique, at international level. He scored
on his Rovers debut at Nottingham Forest but added only one further goal to his tally. In October 2012 Rovers signed the experienced former Stoke City, Newcastle United and Reading defender ANDY GRIFFIN (2012-13) to provide defensive cover. Griffin performed solidly for Rovers, making 16 League appearances and helping the club to win the League One title on a dramatic final day at Brentford. He was not offered a contract for the following season but played in some reserve games before joining Chester City. The returning Wellens took over the No. 19 shirt for 2013-14 and the following season before opting for No. 7 in his final season. Young striker JACK MCKAY (2015-16) replaced him as No. 19 before moving to Leeds United along with his twin brother, Paul. LIAM MANDEVILLE (2016-17), a former Youth team-mate of the McKay twins, had worn the Nos. 37 and 21 before opting for the No. 19 shirt in August 2016. It brought him good luck as he enjoyed a breakthrough season, scoring 10 goals in total and helping Rovers secure promotion back to League One. He chose No. 14 for the following season, and the No. 19 shirt was taken up by its current owner, ALFIE MAY (2017-date). The Gravesend-born striker was signed in January 2017 after an excellent record in non-League football with Hythe Town. His hard work and energy have made him a popular figure with Rovers fans. I would like to thank all the Rovers fans who made the recent trips to Scunthorpe, Wimbledon and Blackpool, I hope you all had a safe journey and enjoyed the games. I would like to discuss our recent FA Cup fifth-round match against Crystal Palace and share with you some of the feedback that myself and the club received from the visiting fans. As many of you may know, before and after each game, I communicate with the away clubs SLO and with the away fans on social media, forums and via email. Following all our home games, I ask the away fans for feedback on their experience visiting the Keepmoat Stadium and ask for any suggestions they may have on how the club could improve the match day experience for away fans.
The feedback I received was fantastic: all of the people I communicated with could not speak highly enough about their visit. A lot of the Palace fans had high praise for the Belle Vue Bar and about the warm welcome they received from the Rovers fans that were in there. The Rovers stewards were also praised for how welcome they made the Palace fans feel and how friendly and helpful they were throughout the visit. The atmosphere created by the Rovers fans was highly commended by the visiting fans and they were also very impressed with the organisation of the display in the Black Bank. On the football side, the Palace fans applauded the Rovers display on the pitch and they admired our style of play, with many of them
saying that if we continued to perform as well as we did that day then they would expect us to be up there at the end of the season. Many also said that they would be cheering on the Rovers and they would be supporting us in our push for the play-offs and wished us all the best for the rest of the season. The Retford branch of the Supporters Club are holding their end of season Dinner and Dance, and away player of the year awards at Ye Olde Bell Inn at Barnby Moor near Retford on Friday May 10 7.30pm start, Including a free bus from the Doncaster area, tickets are priced at £25 (subsidised by the Supporters Club), you can stop over at the Hotel for £99 per room per night if interested. Also if you travel to home games from the Retford, Harworth, Rossington area we run a coach to the Keepmoat Stadium, departure time 1pm/6pm from Retford, Harworth 1.20pm/6.20pm and Rossington Styrupp and Labour Club 1.30pm/6.30pm. VIKING SUPPORTERS CO-OPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. Martin O'Hara

FOUNDATION UPDATE Club Doncaster Foundation are launching a female version of the groundbreaking Fit Rovers course. The Fit Rovers Ladies course is designed for women across Doncaster, supporting them to make positive lifestyle changes. A pilot version of the course has been running over the past few weeks, with their feedback helping create the activities and workshop content. Club Doncaster’s head of HR Kirsty Cavanagh, who has supported the course development, said: “This course is about so much more than a weight loss session or group, this is about bringing women together. If we look at those small changes that we can make to our daily routines, we can live a better life inside and outside of work.” Participants can take part in activities such as beat-fit and netball, as well as taking part in educational sessions on diet and lifestyle designed to reduce the risk of developing health conditions linked to physical inactivity. Health & Wellbeing officer Scott Copeland added: “On the men’s programme we’ve seen some fantastic examples of behaviour change and it’s our ambition to replicate this success.” The programme will follow a similar structure to the men’s course: social elements; informal and interactive health workshops; fun andinclusive exercise sessions. All sessions are free to attend for those wishing to take part. All participants will receive a Fit Rovers Ladies t-shirt and course booklet which has been co-designed by the participants, to help them achieve their individual goals. Participants will also receive weekly individual diet feedback and support from Foundation staff as they continue their journey week-by-week.
