FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Bosco Tech family and friends, I pray that your family enjoyed the celebration of Easter and rejoiced with us in the resurrection of our Lord!

During the much anticipated Spring break, I hope that your son had a chance to both relax and to begin planning for the start of the last quarter of the 2015-2016 school year. This is an important time for everyone as we approach Advanced Placement exams and the application process for next year’s AP and honors courses, and as we being to plan for the very important final exams that will occur during the first week of June.

On Wednesday, April 6, we will host our regular parent-teacher conferences. I encourage each parent to attend the informative and helpful session which runs from 1:30 to 7:30 p.m., with a 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. dinner break. These conferences are the best opportunity to catch up with instructors and to gauge your son’s progress and standing in his classes at this point in the academic school year.

Please continue to encourage your son to study, prepare for upcoming class projects, and apply himself fully to his studies. Know that we are always available should you have any questions or concerns regarding your son’s classes or progress.

FROM THE SALESIAN DIRECTOR Dear Bosco Tech Family and Friends: The last two issues of The Gear found us in the middle of Lent; this issue and the next find us deep in the joy of the Easter season. Almost everyone laments the 40 relentless days of Lent, but so few rejoice in the 50 days of Easter joy! That’s right, Easter lasts for 50 full days to Pentecost. Your next task is to make your Easter candy last that long!

Worth your time in this season are the various post-resurrection appearances of Jesus and the stories of the early Christian communities. These are the parts most folks enjoy and offer lots of inspiration for true gospel living. As you peruse these stories, note that those following Jesus do so in communities, that is, with other people. There is no such thing as a Christian in isolation. Notice too, that following Jesus was difficult for those people in the Bible. Being a faithful anything requires sacrifice—to grow in faith one needs to grow with others.

CSEE SENIOR CREATES MINI GAME CONSOLE —WHILE FRESHMEN START NEW COMPUTER PROJECT While freshmen in CSEE have been busy building their own computers, senior Donovan Gonzalez has taken the project a quantum leap further and, by programming one of the wallet-sized kits, has created a working miniconsole reminiscent of arcade gaming units introduced in the early 1980s.

The Raspberry Pi kit project, introduced this year to CSEE freshmen in their Computer & Electronics Basics class, allows them to explore computing and learn programming while customizing their own fully functional but tiny motherboards. The finished unit communicates with monitors, cameras and USB-enabled peripheral devices, while accessing the internet via the campus’ WiFi signal. The entire unit can be held in the palm of your hand.

And now Donovan, who currently is taking Advanced Placement Computer Science, has provided inspiration to the freshmen by creating a gaming console built around a Raspberry Pi. His working arcade-style console looks like a miniature Asteroids unit, a la 1980, and plays hundreds of popular and retro video games. With a hand from his father who is a skilled finish carpenter, Donovan created the realistic looking scaled-down housing and has already had requests from teachers and friends to build them similar units. He says he will leave one in the CSEE lab for future students to enjoy when he continues his computer science studies at the university level in the fall.

His AP Computer Science instructor, Mr. Ed Sepulveda, is understandably proud. “Donovan’s project is a great example of what our students can accomplish. We know that by establishing the basic knowledge of computer hardware in them at an early point, they have the opportunity to build on that knowledge and, adding their own creativity and imagination, develop projects far beyond the average consumer’s understanding of technology,” he says. “This rare understanding of how computers actually work will put these students, young men like Donovan, well ahead of their peers in their grasp of and confidence with technology.”

ARCHDIOCESE CHRISTIAN SERVICE AWARD WINNER On March 18, Archbishop Jose Gomez presented to local Catholic high school seniors the 2016 Archdiocese of Los Angeles Christian Service Award at a special Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. The students, representing each of the 51 Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese, were honored for their exemplary Christian service to their communities.

The Bosco Tech recipient of this year’s prestigious award was senior Anthony Figueroa (MSET '16). Anthony has devoted a great deal of time to helping others. He has served as Relay for Life Coordinator, Kairos team leader, Salesian Experience freshman retreat leader, while helping organize school retreats, liturgies and character assemblies. He also has served as the Friends of Don Bosco (FDB) program coordinator and Salesian Province Rock- Out Youth Poverty event planner.

In addition, Anthony has been a student representative to Bosco Tech's Educative Pastoral Council and bi-centenary planning committee, a team member for San Gabriel Mission Elementary school retreats, and One City regional coordinator for Tiny Tots coaching and tutoring programs. He has worked for Heal the Bay, and was an emcee and minister of liturgical movement for the Archdiocese’ Youth Day. This year, the high school students of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles dedicated more than 40,000 hours in service.

PLAN AHEAD—SUMMER AT BOSCO TECH Bosco Tech will offer a full roster of academic enrichment and review courses, as well as sports camps, to boys and girls this summer. Six-week high school courses begin on Monday, June 27, while five-week middle school courses begin on Tuesday, July 5.

High school students can earn a full year’s course credits over the summer by successfully completing accelerated classes in Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus, while students who wish to recover academic credit can choose from a wide range of offerings. Also offered are enrichment classes such as Android Apps Design and Beginning and Intermediate Guitar.

Middle school students can enroll in enrichment classes like Fun with Electronics & Computers or build and program their own robot in our Robotics class. Students can also participate in a hands-on laboratory science workshop, or attend cheerleading camp. Sports camps will be offered for baseball, basketball, cross country, football, soccer, and tennis beginning June 27. Both the basketball and cross country camps are open to students as young as fourth grade.

The deadline for summer school pre-registration is June 10. Walk-in registration, on a space-available basis will be conducted on Tues.-Wed., June 21-22, in the school library from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1 to 4 p.m.

ACE USES 3D PRINTING FOR BRIDGE INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN Each year, Bosco Tech students in Architecture & Construction Engineering (ACE) compete in, and often win, the Building Industry Association (BIA) of Southern California’s Architectural Design and Model Building Contest for area high schoolers.

This year’s ACE entrees will boast a whole new level of realism and detail that will set them ahead of the competition. The group is employing 3D printing to create transparent road models that will include cavities for cabling, cable attachment inlets, curved roadbeds for drainage, guard rails, and pedestrian paths.

“The 3D capabilities will enable our bridges to be technically and structurally accurate, not just artistically pleasACE junior Michael Mendoza uses 3D printing to ing,” ACE Chairman Chris Barnett (DR ‘81) explains. “It replicate realistic portions of scaled roadways that are gives us a tremendous edge in the competition and teaches part of the cable-stayed bridge project.. actual bridge engineering in visual form that we cannot replicate in traditional model form. As ACE instructors continue to find news ways to use the exciting 3D technology, the department is asking alumni and friends who may have access to 3D printers and printing filament to donate materials. The students are currently using a printer borrowed from Integrated Design, Engineering & Art (IDEA) and are running low on filament, especially the clear type. “We truly appreciate donations of any kind of that Do you have resources or contacts who can help provide a 3D printer or will enhance our students’ filament? PROM SEASON REMINDER FROM THE CPUC It is prom season again and the California Department of Education and the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) want parents to be aware that the state regulates limousines, party buses and ride services such as Uber and Lyft in order to protect the public. Vendors must be licensed by the CPUC and must maintain between $750,000 and $5 million in liability insurance coverage, depending on the vehicle seating capacity (unlicensed companies may carry little or no insurance.) Among the regulations the licensed vendors observe is a law that requires that they ensure minor passengers do not consume alcoholic beverages.

Using a licensed company is not a guarantee that the service will be problem-free, but the odds of receiving satisfactory service are greatly increased. Obtaining a written contract will also reduce the likelihood of problems.

NHHS MEMBERS WORK AT L.A .MARATHON —BY EDWARD CASTRO, NHHS MEMBER AND 2016 MARATHON VOLUNTEER

My experience volunteering for the LA marathon was truly enriching to say the least. I have not done volunteer work for a marathon before so at the start I was a bit apprehensive. However, the people in charge of the volunteers were very good at delegating. Not only that, but I was also able to work with a variety of people, something I had never really gotten a chance to do in my entire life. That was something special because I thought we'd have our differences, but we all worked together quite well. Not only did I get to work well with my fellow volunteers, but I also worked well with the runners. It was always great hearing them thank me for handing them emergency blankets or water. Although some runners were impatient, most of them were quite nice.

All in all, the experience of working at the LA marathon was enriching and eye-opening. I have always known that the state of California is diverse, but now I can attest to that personally and can say without a doubt that it was good working as a volunteer.

FRESHMEN REPRESENT BOSCO TECH AT L.A. COUNTY SCIENCE & ENGINEERING FAIR —EARN THIRD PLACE SPOT Major kudos to freshmen Patrick Jackson and Michael Garcia who presented their project at this year’s Los Angeles County Science & Engineering Fair on March 18. Their project, Transforming Plants, earned them third place in the category of Plant Biology, as well as an opportunity to present their project at the California State Science & Engineering Fair. The team originally performed the experiment for the Bosco Tech science fair and was awarded a tying spot for third place. In addition to the freshmen who competed, science instructor Mrs. Nina Luna served as a judge of Ecology projects at the event.

“I am proud to have all of them representing the school,” said Science Chair Eric Tom. “Patrick and Michael Patrick (left) and Michael’s project achieved created a sound experiment, presented their data well, an impressive third place. and back it up with thorough research. Their excellent work in all three aspects of a science fair project won them welldeserved recognition.”

The LA County Science Fair is the largest and oldest of its kind in the western U.S. More than 1,100 students participated in the event, held at the Pasadena Convention Center.

YOUTH DAY AT ARCHDIOCESE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CONGRESS —-ASSISTANT YOUTH MINISTER BRAD STOLZ On February 25, the city of Anaheim was alive with the energy of 15,000 Catholic teenagers. Yes, it was once again Youth Day at the Religious Education Congress organized by the Los Angeles Archdiocese at the Anaheim Convention Center. Once again there was present a delegation from Bosco Tech Youth Ministry—a total of 31 students from all grades were in attendance. The trip was organized by Mr. Rudy Herrera, head of the Tech’s Youth Ministry, with the assistance of Mrs. Rodriguez and Mr. Brad Stolz.

This year, for the first time, six of our students, Anthony Figueroa, Jeremiah Rodriguez, Daniel Olivas, Michael Sainz, David Casillas, and Ruben Guerra participated in the Youth Day liturgy as Ministers of Liturgical Movement.

Taking part in the opening Mass was a culmination of two months of practice for them. The opening liturgy in the main hall of the center was presided over by Archbishop Gomez, Cardinal Mahoney, and three of our auxiliary bishops. The rest of the morning was also spent in the main hall with all of the thousands of teenagers attending, keeping their spiritual juices flowing and the center rocking by praising God in song.

The afternoon sessions were in smaller halls (smaller only in comparison to the huge main hall) where very talented youth-oriented speakers encouraged the teens to love and read the Bible, and to love and appreciate their families. Tech students finished the day by bonding more with each other during a visit to Downtown Disney for dinner. All agreed, adults included, that being with and experiencing first hand the enthusiasm for God that those 15,000 teenagers had, helped encourage and strengthen their own love for Him. It was a profitable day, indeed.

Bosco Tech President Xavier Jimenez has since received a letter from Ms. Kristina Ortega, the coordinator of the Youth Day liturgy team, in which she calls our six Ministers of Liturgical Moment, “extraordinary young men” who were, “a delight to work with. They were respectful, responsible, mature.. men of faith and integrity… you and your school should be very proud of how they presented themselves and how they represented you.”) We certainly are proud of them!

Jazz Night Out The Jazz Band also has begun their preparation for the Annual Jazz Night Out performance to be held on Friday, April 22, 2016 (see the flyer on page 16). This year’s theme is “Night at The Movies.” Please join us for a funfilled night of entertainment as the Jazz Band perform musical scores from your favorite movies.

SPORTS UPDATE Bosco Tech Lacrosse Enters Second Season —BY MR. KEVIN HOLT, LACROSSE COACH 2016 marks the second season of Tiger Lacrosse at Bosco Tech. The team made huge strides over the course of its first season and has grown both in its roster and win record this season. The team is led by Coach Kevin Holt who had coached for the previous nine seasons with Pasadena's Tribe Lacrosse organization.

Lacrosse is America's original team sport. Called the ‘creator’s game’ by Native Americans who played, it was observed by French Jesuit missionaries in the 1600s, and was called ‘la crosse’ because the stick used in the game resembled a Bishop's crook or crosse.

Tiger Lacrosse's motto is H3, representing three virtues the team embodies; - Honor—we honor the game, our opponents, and ourselves when we play.

- Hustle—we hustle on and off the field and in all aspects of our lives.

- Humility—we are humble whether we win or lose, and in how we deal with others in our lives.

The Tigers Lacrosse team plays in the Pacific Lacrosse League, a high school club league consisting of teams located throughout Southern California, including our brother Salesian school, St. John Bosco. Lacrosse season begins in February and runs through mid-May. Come out and see us play!

Track & Field Starts Off Season Well—

BY HEAD COACH STANFORD TUCKER & ASSISTANT COACH BRAD STOLZ The Bosco Tech Track & Field team, while young, has already shown that our great expectations for it are well justified. Our first invitational meet was the Bishop Amat Invitational held at Citrus College on March 5. We had a number of varsity track and field medal winners in their heats: junior Rey Castellanos, seniors Hiram Acosta and David Casillas. The freshmen-sophomore team did especially well on the track, winning medals in both the 100 meter sprint and the 4 X 100 relay: freshman Adam Crawford, sophomores Cameron Caterio, Sidney Herrera, and Xiaolin (Forest) Yang.

On March 12, at our second Invitational meet at Walnut High School, everyone increased their personal best (PR). Junior Rey Castellanos finished third in the long jump and won his heat in the 100 meter sprint and took third overall. In shot put, junior Robert Luna took second and senior Luis Escobar got third in their heats. Our 4X 200 meter relay team won their heat.

We had the luck of the Irish on St. Patrick’s Day in our first league meet at St. Paul’s High School against Salesian. We did well in all events. Our JV team

SPORTS UPDATE (CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE) defeated Salesian 80-24 points, and our Varsity won with a very impressive 79-33 points! Freshmen Vince Maldonado and Aaron Dominguez came in second in the JV and Varsity 1600 (1 mile) meter races. Sophomore Gabriel Espejel and Junior Augustine Escalera won the 310 meter JV and varsity hurdles. Freshman Alvaro Chavez and sophomore Forest Yang won the 400 meter JV and varsity races, and Sidney Herrera and Rey Castellanos won the 100 meter JV and varsity sprints.

We firmly believe that the team will continue to improve and live up to our great expectations of them. We go to the St Paul Classic Invitational on March 19, our second league meet against Cantwell on March 23, and our 3rd league meet on April 6 against St. Paul. The last of our regular season league meets is on April 13 against St. Monica at St. Paul’s track. Hope to see you there.

INTERNATIONAL CLUB NEWS: ENGINEERS DAY FOLLOW UP —BY MRS. CATHERINE DIAZ, DIRECTOR OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ACADEMIC PROGRAM

As mentioned last month, international student and junior Leslie Giovanny tried on the ‘bunny suit’ used in the ‘clean rooms’ and labs by JPL supervising engineer and Engineers Day guest speaker, Mr. Alejandro Jimenez (EL '91). Mr. Jimenez made many impactful comments during his presentation and many of our international students were in the audience. His title 'Growing up in the ‘hood, to studying at the Tech, to working under the hood of Mars Rovers,' had our students intrigued and they became completely engrossed in his presentation.

Alex was inadvertently interviewed by a JPL engineer when he was six months away from his college graduation. JPL had come to the Cal Poly Pomona campus to recruit students. Casually dressed and hearing about the interviews from a friend, Alex decided to request an appointment. As he says, "What did I have to lose?" Fortunately for him, the student assigned to that precise hour had not arrived, so the gentleman asked Alex to interview immediately. Out of 85 students interviewed, Alex was selected. When he inquired why, the engineer listed several reasons why ‘it was a no-brainer’: - they were impressed with the tech experience Alex gained at Bosco Tech - he already knew how to work in a lab with his years of high school experience - he already knew how to work in a group and on a team, which is so very important - he earned his AS degree at Bosco Tech at a young age, which was quite impressive - he had learned all about electrical engineering.

Motivating the students to "Dare Mighty Things," the slogan on the t-shirt Alex wore for his presentation, he passed around a few pieces from the various Rovers for students to examine. The visual slide show featured the labs, offices, rover construction, computer hardware assembly and testing, plus the various completed rovers that have been used on Mars. This presentation was hugely successful and inspired our students!
