MILESTONES

A milestone is set up beside a road to mark the distance in miles to a particular place. A milestone can also be an event marking a significant new development or stage. For our purpose we take the word ‘milestone’ in the second sense. So milestones can be important events in the life of a nation, of an organization, an individual person, etc. One of the significant mile stones we celebrated on 13 October this year, was the 100th year of the last apparition of Our Lady to Jacinta, Francesco and Lucy at Fatima in Portugal. She declared herself to be the ‘Lady of the Holy Rosary’ and asked the three children to do penance and pray for the conversion of Russia and of the world. Russian communism may have weakened. But atheism and hedonistic materialism are on the rise, both in Russia and the world. More prayers and efforts are needed for the achievement of the final milestone. Closer home, the beatification of Sr. Rani Maria FCC by Angelo Cardinal Amato on 4 November 2017 at Indore, Madhya Pradesh, marks an important milestone. She was slain by money-lenders through a hired killer, Samandar Singh, on 25 February 1995. She awaits a more significant milestone of her eventual canonization. Salesian Province of Dimapur just celebrated the jubilees of 10 of our Confreres as they have achieved their 25th, 50th, and 60th milestones of their Priestly and Salesian life: Fr. Kakkanatt Ckacko, Fr. Karthikapallil Thomas and Fr. Manianchira Sebastian (Diamond Jubilee of Profession and Golden Jubilee of Ordination), Fr. Vattoth Thomas (Golden Jubilee of Ordination), Fr. Kallarackal Job and Fr. Menamparampil George (Golden Jubilee of Profession), Fr. Elow Samuel, Fr. Anthony Christudoss, Fr. Kreni Salew Peter and Fr. Kalluvelil Thomas (Silver Jubilee of Profession). Fr. Tom Karthikapallil describes these jubilees as seasons of the year. Silver Jubilee is like Spring when the jubilarian sees his 25 years as flowers in full bloom. Golden Jubilee is like Summer when the jubilarian rejoices over the fruits of his past endeavours. Diamond Jubilee (for those who reach it) is like Autumn when there is no more active fructification. Platinum Jubilee(impossible to achieve) is like Winter when the jubilarian is already in the ‘other world’. Of course, for any milestone to be achieved meaningfully, one has to make genuine, constant and patient effort since, as the Chinese Philosopher, Laozi in 604 BC said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. - Jonas Kerketta Sdb

GOLAGHAT MISSION

Golaghat mission was started on 4 August 1941 by Fr. Peter Jean Neyens sdb and was officially blessed and inaugurated by Mgr. Stephen Ferrando, Bishop of Shillong on 24 August 1941. On 6 September 1941 the bungalow and the workshop built by Mr. Flawkin, was bought for Rs. 2,400. The Catholics of Rangajan village prepared the compound for church functions and for a primary school. Over 500 Catholics took part in the feast of St. Teresa of Child Jesus, celebrated for the first time on 7 October 1941. On 9 December 1941 Fr. Fiorenzo Mellino sdb came as Asst. Parish Priest. By the end of 1941 Fr. Neyens had established 95 communities with 6,878 Catholics. Fr. Mellino was transferred to Raliang on 12 February 1942 and Fr. Neyens was left alone. He sold the old plot of land and bought part of the Golaghat Tea Estate. It had a bungalow, a large plot paddy field and a bit of forest. Fr. Neyens built a small chapel for church services. By the end of the World War II white ants destroyed this wooden chapel. An Assamese medium school and a boarding for boys was started in February 1945 with Mr. John Tirkey, Mr. J. Peter Ekka, Mr. Rufus, Mr. Raphael and Mr. John Kerketta as first teachers. On 30 April 1946 Fr. Neyens left for

The boarding soon had 240 Adivasi boys and 93 Naga boys mainly from Lakhuti. Sr. Victoria Toppo and Sr. Mary Surin, two Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians, came in May 1951. In 1952 an Assamese medium school was opened with Sr. Mary Surin as in charge. Soon Sr. Teresa Soreng joined her. The girls’ boarding began soon. A weaving school was opened for girls from the hills. FR. JOSE KUTTIANIMATTATHIL ON

FORMATION

The South Asian Formation Commission Meeting was held at the Don Bosco Institute for Development and Leadership (DBIDL) Dimapur,on 12 and 13 Sept. 2017. On the sidelines of this meeting the editor of Dimapur Links interviewed Fr. Jose Kuttianimattathil sdb, South Asian Delegate for Formation, on the Salesian formation scenario in general and in the south Asian region. DL: What, according to you, are some of the problems of formation in the South Asian region, in India and particularly in Northeast India? Fr. Jose: If we think of the world in general, I think the major problem is secularization. Secularization is a process whereby people try to push God out of their life. We want to push God out of the world, out of our life and then become masters of our own life. And because of that there is no space, let us say, for priests because if people don’t believe in God or are not interested in God then priestly work becomes redundant. DL: What are the strengths of Salesian formation in the South Asian region? Fr. Jose: I think one of our strengths is that people want to do lot of things. But at the same time, from the religious point of view, that also is a weakness because if we look at our Constitutions we are told that our mission is to be signs and bearers of God’s love to the youth.

Our mission is not some work, this work or that work. Our mission is to be signs and bearers of God’s love to young people. And so we have to be messengers of God, we have to be the face of God for young people. I think when we get involved in doing this or that work, in other words in activities, we play down our real mission of being the face of God for young people. And I think it is there that we need to stress a little more. It is a strength that we are doing a lot of work, but then what happens is that the real mission of being messengers of God’s love get diluted. DL: Do the modern mass media and particularly the social media affect the work and process of formation? Fr. Jose: Certainly the impact of modern mass media and social media is there very much and it affects the work of formation not so much when the formees are in the formation hous, that also is there, but it affects the work of formation in the sense that even before they come, from their childhood onwards, they have been very much influenced by the world of mass media and social media. And therefore their mentality, their mindset, all that I mentioned earlier, is more and more secular. Earlier we had a religious ambient and candidates came from a society that valued religion and God. Today we have a society where God and religion are not given much importance. And

Dimapur Links: Sept. - Oct. 2017 /15

that has certainly affected them and that affects the way that we want to accompany them in their formation. And so what has exactly to be done? I think we have to start with educating families so that the children in the families are brought up in an ambient that is a little more, let us say, God fearing and where a little more importance is given to God and religion. So I think we have to start with educating the families. DL: Does the Salesian formation given in the Indian context satisfy the requirements of the Congregation? Fr. Jose: Oh certainly we always try to follow what the Ratio asks of us with regard to formation. We try to follow the directives given to us by the Rector Major and also by the formation commission. And so in that sense I think we are very much in consonance with what the Congregation asks of us. DL: The world is changing rapidly. It gives more importance to efficiency and competence. How to balance between qualifying candidates for better efficiency in their future ministry and between forming them in spirituality? Fr. Jose: I think the stress has to be in the second part that is, becoming men of God. When we are really men of God, then we are men who are really needed by the society. In this sense that, while earlier I said that the world is becoming more and more secular but deep down in the hearts of people there is an yearning for something more than what the world can offer. And so if we really become men of

God then we will become really relevant in the world. And that is our first relevance. And then we will really become signs and bearers of God’s love. Of course, in the works that we do, as teachers or professors or whatever work we do as priests, once we are really people of God, then we need also to qualify ourselves in these various apostolates that we have, but that I believe is the secondary. The primary thing is really to become persons who are really men of God. Then we will become relevant. DL: According to you, in the formation of candidates in Northeast India, what specific requirements should be kept in mind? Fr. Jose: I think one of the richness of Northeast India is the variety, the multiplicity, all that we see. We need to treasure these because this is one of the dimensions of God. While God is one, he is beautiful, while God is one; he manifests himself through this variety that we see around us. We say in the psalms “the heavens proclaim the glory of God. So I think all these multiplicity, variety, beauty that we see here, need to be carefully preserved, we need to encourage that. Again, going along with that, we should really be persons who are earth-friendly, eco-sensitive, diversity-friendly. I think these are qualities we need to cultivate and that is really something very difficult because to live together when we have multi-cultural groups, the dynamics of living together in a multi-cultural group is very different. And so we need to think of that and live together as children of God. Then we will really become witnesses to the world. And I think that is very important for Northeast India. And that is the way I think we can bear witness to the love of God for young people here. Apart from that, of course, all the traditional works that we do, the Salesian works that we carry out, the apostolate that we have, those also need to be kept alive. -Jonas Kerketta sdb, Dimapur

Dimapur Links: Sept. - Oct. 2017 /21

The newly built parish church dedicated to Mary Help of Christians was blessed on 15 October 2017 by Tr. Rev. John Thomas DD, Bishop of Itanagar. In all 45 Priests, an equal number of Sisters and over 2,500 faithful participated in the programme. The land for the church was purchased by Fr. A. D. Jose. When Fr. Tom Karthikapallil was parish priest the foundation stone was laid by Mr. Nabam Tuki, then Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, on 11 December 2012. Fr. Tom got a design done by an architect, Mr. Pius Vaipana. The estimated cost of construction was Rs. 15 crores. As the cost was too high, the commencement of construction was put off. It was at this juncture that Fr. Job Kallarackal agreed to find an architect who would offer his services for free. Fr. Job also agreed to solicit funds for the church. The construction work began in November 2013. The parishioners of St. Mary’s Parish were generous with their offerings in cash and kind. The family members, friends and benefactors of Fr. Job generously contributed towards the construction of the church. Fr. Cyprian Kallikaden was appointed to supervise the construction. He put his heart and

soul in the work toiling night and day to get the church completed at the earliest. Mr. Martin Njavally, the architect made frequent visits from Bangalore at his own expense to supervise the work. During the dedication of the church, Fr. Job spoke of the church as a monument of love to Our Lady. The church stands as a witness to many miracles performed by our Blessed Mother. It is hoped that this church, dedicated to Mary Help of Christians, will eventually become a shrine and a centre of pilgrimage. Mr. Nabam Tuki (former Arunachal CM), Mr. Bamang Felix (PHE Minister) and Mr. Sanjay Takam (former MP and current Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee president) wished that the church will also become a tourist destination for all visitors to Itanagar. IN A LIGHTER MOOD Only Right Hand isGuilty Once a thief was convicted and given rigorous imprisonment. The handcuffed thief said to the judge, “My Lord, it’s certainly not fair. While my right hand committed the theft, my whole body is being penalized. The judge was amused and remarked, “Alright, I amend the sentence. Now your right hand only will be penalized.” And the thief happily parted with his right wooden hand and walked free! Sun Missing at Night Two opium lovers were exchanging thoughts. First: “Yar! Why doesn’t the sun come out in the night?” Second: “You are wrong, it does come out!” First:

“Comes out? Then why is it not visible?”

Second: “Because of the darkness!”

Red Ears A man with two red ears went to the

doctor. The doctor asked him what the matter was. “I was ironing a shirt and the mobile rang. Instead of picking up the mobile, I absentmindedly picked up the iron and stuck it to my ear” said the man. “Oh dear!” exclaimed the doctor in disbelief. “But what happened to your other ear?” “The scoundrel called back again,” replied the patient.
