Regional Gatherings Parish Visits Enhance Development The ministry of development for our congregation continues to be an exciting challenge! Since its focus is on relationships with people, we continually express many, many thanks to our annual appeal, Mission & Ministry and holiday donors. Your gifts enable us to continue good works within and outside of our congregation. This year we are holding regional gatherings as another way to build relationships. So far, we have welcomed many friends and supporters to gatherings in Traverse City and Mount Pleasant, with an event also set for Saginaw in June. These gatherings help us to develop and implement a process of regular and consistent connections with friends in larger population areas where our Sisters have served. Participants have found them to be a wonderful way to connect with Sisters they once knew, learn about the whereabouts of Sisters and to link the past with our present day ministries.

from the prioress
Dear Friends, Welcome to the blossoming of spring, which draws us into the graciousness of our Creator. In this issue of Mission & Ministry we focus on "liturgy" and future growth, which is rooted in our prayer. Liturgy is a cherished Dominican tradition with a legacy that began when two Sisters attended a very different Mass in the 1920s. Today, our liturgy is the spiritual guidepost of how we do our work, celebrate God and share our lives with many of you in communities around the world. As our liturgical tradition has flourished, so has our desire to celebrate God’s movement, through publications such as this, which made its debut about two years ago, and its accompanying "banner" – “emboldened by faith, serving with joy.” And just recently, after much thought and conversation, we now have adopted a new direction statement: Inflamed with contemplative love, We die and are reborn As we walk together preaching justice. Our Marywood campus, so particularly radiant in the spring, is also in the midst of a new direction and growth as we walk together. Later this year, the campus will be transformed into a residential haven for our Sisters and other seniors in our community, as well as a licensed health care facility through the renovation of the Marywood Health Center. This major lifechanging venture and our many other missions and ministries devoted to those in need would not be possible without the generosity and support of hundreds of caring people. Many of them are listed on our “donor recognition” pages inside this publication. We are eternally gratefully for these many blessings from the work of your hands and heart and for your faith in the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids and its still-blossoming liturgical heritage and service. Wishing you all the joy and happiness that spring’s rebirth provides. With deep appreciation for your generous support, Nathalie Meyer, OP Prioress

Liturgy a living legacy in 'praying for the whole world' Ask a Dominican Sister how liturgy is an important part of her life and you’ll likely hear a very simple explanation – “It just is.” In fact, the Sisters not only embrace liturgy – a word meaning the “work of the people” – in how they conduct their life’s work, but they also live it in how, when and where they pray. “It is in the very marrow of our bones,” said Sister Janet Brown, liturgical life director. “We inherited it from our past Sisters who loved and prayed so well.” The Sisters’ cherished Dominican Praise book of prayer, in its introductory passages, defines their role as that of “a people praying for the whole world.” This Liturgy of the Hours is prayed twice each day, first as darkness gives way to the morning sun, and then as the sun sets on the day’s labors. The Liturgy of the Eucharist, by its very nature, is both universal and communal. It belongs to the whole church, and that’s why others are invited to participate, especially each Sunday, for the Eucharistic Celebration. This group of Sisters, Associates and laity is known as the Sunday Assembly. A new participant in a Sunday Assembly Mass at the Dominican Chapel Marywood may be initially surprised at the simplicity of the interior design. The chapel has been described as a “place plain enough for questions, for pain, clarity, light. It is a space for gathering, where community is found.” Every facet of the chapel is geared toward a unified, liturgical experience, inspired by “Environment and Art in Catholic Worship,” published in 1978 by the Catholic bishops in the USA. Designed by Adrian Dominican Sisters Barbara Chenicek and Rita Schiltz, the chapel’s windows provide seasonal shifts of natural light, with an altar and platform constructed of Michigan oak. Liturgical tapestries, hand sewn by the Sisters, symbolize the passing of seasons in abstract, muted patterns of color and texture. Instead of traditional unmovable pews, chairs are arranged in a circular pattern to “better allow people to bring themselves in, to participate in the Mass, to celebrate our common priesthood and communal action together,” Sister Janet explained. “The chapel is a symbol of us.” But liturgy does not end at the completion of the celebration, as the Sisters offer their lives in service to and with God’s people. In the past, churches were built as a place of God’s presence, but today in the spirit of Vatican II the emphasis is on the church as a place of God’s action. At the conclusion of every Eucharist, we go forth to bring peace and justice to the world! ~ Christine Ervin 2

Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids liturgical approach began in the 1920s with two Sisters, one Mass
T
he Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids are well known for their dedication to a liturgical way of life. But chances are that many outside of their organization don’t know that their liturgical orientation has its roots in a religious service attended by two of their members more than 80 years ago.
The Sisters first heard about Benedictine monk Father Virgil Michel when they read “Worship,” a liturgy magazine he first published in 1926. So after receiving permission from their Mother General, they took a train to Minnesota to talk to him directly about their academic goals. With his encouragement and overview, they began creating liturgical pamphlets and then a “Christ Life Series” of books for students in primary school through college.
“It was an astoundingly different Mass that our Sisters Jane Marie Murray and Estelle Hackett experienced at Marygrove College in Detroit,” said Sister Mary Kay Oosdyke, a Dominican Sister in Grand Rapids and a scholar in theology. “For the first time, they saw a congregation that was engaged and in dialogue with the priest.”
While Father Virgil Michel is generally regarded as the founder of the liturgical movement and the concept of a “dialogue Mass” in the United States, he was inspired by similar work going on in Europe, specifically in Germany, Italy and France. During a sabbatical in Europe, he had met Belgian Father Lambert Beauduin, who had united liturgy with the concept of social justice in France. Not only was social justice a key component in Father Virgil Michel’s approach, but it also became an important part of the Dominican Sisters’ way of life that continues to this day.
Up until then, she said, the typical Catholic Mass was recited in Latin by the priest with his back toward the congregation. Many attendees did not understand the language well enough to actively participate. Instead, they would say the rosary or revert to other forms of personal reflection. “They might have a sense of worship, but it wasn’t focused enough,” Sister Mary Kay said. “But what Sister Jane Marie and Estelle experienced at Marygrove for the first time was the voice of the people in church, an involvement with the body of Christ, a truly liturgical experience.” Thus was born the quest for an actively engaged liturgical approach in Catholic worship for the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids. “Quite simply, the word liturgy has its origins in Greek and translates to ‘work of the people,’” Sister Mary Kay noted. And when these two pioneering Sisters, who were teachers, decided to apply liturgy to their education curriculums, they found a definitive source at St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota.
3
The Sisters’ “Christ Life Series” was published in 1934 and 1935, said Sister Mary Kay, and were noteworthy for more than their liturgical significance. “It wasn’t until the 1950s that women were allowed to formally study theology,” she explained. “So Sisters Jane Marie and Estelle were far ahead of their time.” Sister Mary Kay is likely more aware than most about these two visionary Sisters’ contributions to the study of liturgy. In the early 1980s, she wrote her dissertation on the contributions of Sister Jane Marie as part of a Ph.D. in religion and education from Boston College. ~ Christine Ervin
Music as preaching
D
uring her first week of school at Aquinas College in 1950, Sister Laurena Alflen had one question while signing up for classes: “How come I’m not taking piano lessons?” And that simple question started the music education program, with Sisters Laurena and Colleen Copeland taking a full schedule of music classes. Eventually, Sisters Marie Joy Yuhasz, Nathalie Meyer, Joan Williams, Ann Norman and Mary Ann Ferguson (and many more) would go on to teach music throughout the country. The Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids have taught music to thousands of students, even from very early on. “I started taking music classes in 1950, and started teaching music classes the next year,” said Sister Laurena. While still working on completing their Bachelor’s and for some later on, their Master’s degrees, the Sisters taught music in communities from Bay City, to Grand Rapids, to Chicago and beyond. The Sisters taught wherever they were missioned. Starting with teaching choir, they worked to bring in instruments, chants, hand bell choirs, sight reading and more. “With the spare money we would earn from teaching piano lessons and teaching other music classes, we funded all the instruments used in the classroom, and really expanded the musical programs in these Catholic schools,” said Sister Laurena. “We weren’t funded like the public schools, but because of how well educated the Catholic students were, and how tenacious we were about teaching, the Board of Education respected the Catholic Schools opinion and would listen to what we’d have to say.”
"We wouldn't just teach [the students] music, but we would teach them the theology of what it was all about." Sister Laurena Alflen
A large portion of the music teaching took place in church, where the students would learn chants, in Latin no less. School Mass was always very important, and the students would practice and learn new songs to sing in church. They would do the entire service in Gregorian chant, practicing three times a week, even in middle school. “We wouldn’t just teach [the students] music, but we would teach them the theology of what it was all about,” said Sister Laurena.

the melody of tradition When students left the Catholic school system to go on to college or to start their life in the workforce, those who were taught in the music program were well prepared. All of the seniors in Sisters Laurena and Marie Joy’s classes had to give a recital, just like it is done in college to receive a Bachelor’s in Music. Because of this extensive learning and preparation, many went on to become music teachers and professional musicians. For Sister Laurena, the work she did as a music teacher never became routine. “I loved what I did and had a passion for music, and I made sure that my students had that same passion,” said Sister Laurena. “We wanted to have them experience music fully and, from that, find their place in life.” ~ Matthew Bergevin
Gregorian Chant

. . .heritage of our dominican community
Gregorian chant has been an essential part of Catholic liturgy since the sixth century. It is characterized as a special kind of music requiring no harmony or musical instrumentation and often relies on a single tone with a slow moving, almost mystical quality. This particular form of chant is known as “Gregorian” because Pope Gregory I (540 – 604 A.D.) is credited with organizing the music. It is always sung in Latin, with the exception of the Kyrie which is in the Greek language. Before Vatican II, the Catholic Mass used Gregorian Chant exclusively for both the common (unchanging) parts, i.e., Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei, Doxology as well as the proper parts which changed according to the day and season. Two Dominican Sisters – Evangelista Rohrl and Emmanuel Kopp – from the early 20th century helped establish the Gregorian Chant as part of the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids musical tradition. The Sisters had a great passion for beautiful liturgical music. Sister Evangelista, or “the guru” as some of the Sisters referred to her, spent more than half of her religious life teaching music at Marywood, with the Gregorian Chant being her specialty. Sister Emmanuel, while not as skilled in the execution of chant singing, was fiercely tenacious in her devotion to the form. She would come to the chapel for every practice until she was told in obedience that she must take more rest. In the Motherhouse and on local missions, the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids used the Gregorian Chant on a daily basis, and continued to practice by teaching it in Catholic schools in the decades that followed. “At least three times a week, I would sit behind the organ and we would have our students practice the chant,” said Dominican Sister Laurena Alfen, a musician once described as the “second Sister Evangelista” because of her love for the chant. Each day the Sisters still chant during morning and evening prayer. Today the chant is in English, but still resembles the rhythmic flow of the ancient form. “The Gregorian Chant is our heritage in the community,” said Sister Laurena. “We don’t want it to die out, so we use it every day. It’s who we are.” ~ Matthew Bergevin Sister Evangelista Rohrl (right) with Sister Emmanuel Kopp, c. 1940. 5
Reflections of a Liturgical Musician a little bit about music in the life of a sister
S
ister Catherine Williams has taught, performed and composed music for more than 50 years as a Dominican Sister ~ Grand Rapids. Currently in Ireland as a co-director of the Ireland Overseas Program, she was interviewed via email.
WHY IS MUSIC, MORE SPECIFICALLY SONG, AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE DOMINICAN SISTERS' LITURGICAL LIFE? The Church’s liturgical life requires music as part of its services, with the ritual of the Mass having responses in song. Very early in the formation of our community, Sisters were sent to study programs for learning liturgical music. Then they would come back and teach the rest of the community.
HOW DOES DOMINICAN MUSIC DIFFER FROM THE TRADITIONAL RELIGIOUS HYMN? During the time of the Latin Mass before Vatican II, the Dominicans had their own Rite. They used the Dominican-specific Graduale rather than the Roman Liber Usualis. Each of these books contained the entire Mass set to music in Latin for each day of the year. The Dominican Graduale emphasized the Dominican saints and special feast days of the Dominican Order, but the two books were otherwise similar. We also have very talented composers in our community, so their music gets used as part of our repertoire. We have a collection of Latin hymns that have been part of our music since before Vatican II, and hymns to Mary and Saints Dominic and Thomas Aquinas that come from the Dominican Order. Otherwise, the music is the same as the music used in parish liturgy.
ARE THERE SOME SPECIAL MASSES/RELIGIOUS OBSERVANCES THAT ARE MORE MUSICAL THAN OTHERS? Usually, the bigger the feast the more elegant the music. We pull out all the stops for Easter, Christmas and St. Dominic’s and St. Catherine’s feast days. Sometimes, “more musical” can also mean less music done with more care and quiet eloquence. The liturgical documents tell us to use music according to progressive solemnity – the more important the feast day, the more music we use.
HAS MUSIC BEEN PART OF THE FORMAL TRAINING TO BECOME A SISTER? Before Vatican II, every novice was part of a chant class that met daily to prepare for the liturgy. Some novices who were more musically trained or naturally musical were chosen to be chantresses. This meant that they would practice more in order to sing the special chants from the Dominican Graduale.
DO SISTERS HAVE TO BE ABLE TO READ MUSIC TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SINGING? Reading music is not required, but many of our Sisters do read music because they are either interested in music or were involved in it as part of their education. It is easier to participate if you can read music, but there are some Sisters who are very good singers and learn by listening and remembering. 6
WHO WERE SOME OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE TEACHERS? Sister Evangelista taught every novice and young Sister the Latin chant Mass parts for many years. Sister Yvonne Greiner followed her as a teacher, leading up to Vatican II where we changed our musical language to English. A good number of us have taken our turn as leader of the community prayer/song in the years that have followed.
HAS THE MUSICAL TRADITION CHANGED WITH FEW WOMEN NOW OPTING TO BECOME DOMINICAN SISTERS? In the 1970s when I was at Marywood as teacher and liturgist, we had music classes with the novices. Those who entered during those years were very talented and willing to learn. With few women entering these days, it has become more difficult to offer training, so women who enter with some musical instrument already learned and who want to participate are put to work right away! All are invited to sing in choir and at liturgy.
WAS MUSIC AN ASPECT OF THE DOMINICAN LIFE THAT PARTICULARLY ATTRACTED YOU TO JOIN? I was pretty naïve when I was 14, and entered because I wanted to be a Sister without really knowing what I was being called to do. After I entered the community as a sophomore in high school, it was a joy to be part of the music. I’m sure it played a key role in my decision to continue in the community and definitely helped me develop as a liturgical musician. It is such a blessing to have had the best of pre- and post-Vatican training.
IS YOUR CURRENT LIVING EXPERIENCE IN IRELAND RELATED TO MUSIC STUDIES? I am able to sing some of the Irish songs that are related to the poetry we are studying in Irish literature. I learned them from home and in the community, as we’ve had many Sisters from Ireland who helped us celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with style. Otherwise, I’m part of the choir in my church here in Tully Cross - Christ the King. I’ve also been called on to sometimes be the piano accompanist for Sunday Masses and funerals. And I’m studying the Irish whistle and helping some students learn it with me.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO HAVE YOUR ORIGINAL MUSIC FEATURED IN A MUSICAL PRAYER EVENT LAST YEAR AT AQUINAS COLLEGE?
Sister Catherine Williams cantoring.
For me, learning and teaching music has always been a special privilege, and that event was the culmination of a sabbatical semester I was given for the express purpose of writing music. It was a very exciting evening of musical prayer, with participation of my choir of St. Sebastian of Byron Center, the Aquinas music students and my colleagues from the music department. ~ Christine Ervin 7

quinata Hall on the Marywood campus is surrounded by heavy equipment and 'hardhatted' workers these days, as the former Sisters' infirmary becomes an assisted-living facility for older adults. Deconstruction of the structure was completed on time, with the majority of the materials from the building finding a new use in concert with our "green" commitment. Now construction outside has been enhanced by mild temperatures. The targeted date for completion is September 1, 2012 according to Operations Administrator David Boehm. “Progress is becoming more and more visible as the east facade addition continues to take shape, and we are very pleased with how the project has moved forward,” David said. “Nearly all of the materials, such as windows, window sills and a new elevator, that could impact the schedule have been ordered and are in process. It will be a very exciting spring and summer as the renovation continues.” The three floors of efficiency-style single room apartments (15 per floor) will each have an exercise area, with the building also featuring dining and laundry areas, a beauty salon and an atrium. Some furnishings from the original hall will be reused for the remodeled facility, and other furnishings have been donated. “Cost containment is the over-arching goal as decisions are made on the types of issues that routinely arise on such a complex remodeling project,” David said. Aquinata Hall renovation is part of a campus-wide revitalization that includes a home health component, launched in collaboration with Porter Hills Retirement Communities and Services last year. Porter Hills is also collaborating on the transformation of the Marywood Health Center into a state-licensed facility eligible for Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement. Targeted for completion early next year, the health center will offer rehabilitation services to older adults in the Grand Rapids area, as well as skilled nursing care for the Sisters. ~ Christine Ervin

ubilee is a time to remember, rejoice, celebrate, laugh, give thanks and create a circle of love. This is the day, time, place and space that we come together as contemplative, welcoming, and prayerful women in the spirit of Dominic and Catherine of Siena. Our voices resound joyfully as we gratefully share our gifts of ministry in the presence of God, of one another and the cosmos. Let the Jubilee bells ring out for twenty-five, fifty, sixty, seventy, seventy-five and eighty years of faithful service. As we glance back with deep appreciation, we remember those who have graced us with their labor of love and have gone before us to their final resting place. Their faithfulness and fidelity have created a lasting impression on all of us. Together, we celebrate, we rejoice, we share their stories and we pull them into our circle of love. As we perceive the future, both as individuals and community, we are emboldened to look forward with hope, conversion and transformation. Our eyes are fixed on distant mountains, our feet are plunged into new living waters and our hearts are warmed by the winds of the Spirit. We listen steadfastly, we let go and trust, we resist injustices and we renew our commitment to be ever passionate witnesses of the Gospel. If you would like to receive a Jubilarian Booklet as a keepsake, please email your name and address to: yrackow@grdominicans.org or call 616.643.0136. The booklets have a separate page for each Sister who is celebrating her Jubilee in 2012, which includes a brief biography, the Sister’s personal statement as she celebrates her Jubilee and some lovely photographs. About us Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids is a community of 237 women who follow the Catholic traditions of St. Dominic and St. Catherine of Siena. Since 1877, the Dominican Sisters have taught children and ministered to the orphaned, partnered with nonprofit agencies and served in hospital ministries, social service agencies and hospice care. We have created works of art, helped lead liturgical reform and fostered life in parishes and communities. Today, based on the Marywood campus in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the Dominican Sisters engage in a wide variety of ministries throughout the United States and missions in Peru and Honduras. To volunteer, make a financial contribution or learn more, visit www.grdominicans.org By your donation you will participate in, and make possible, many creative and innovative responses to unmet needs in our society.
