OUR EVOLVING

Mission and Ministry

I

t is customary that we Dominican Sisters reflect on our mission and ministry in many ways. Each Sister does a discernment regarding her own ministry every spring. We meet in small groups in regional areas to discuss our hopes and future way of life. And, as a congregation, we gather annually for Dominican Days in August for a deeper communal reflection of our lives in mission. In recent years, we realized more than ever that we live in challenging times and that as a congregation, we need to find ways to provide for our future. Thus, we embarked on the creation of a partnership with Porter Hills Retirement Communities & Services as a viable way for the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids to move forward with a commitment to care for our aging Sisters and serve the larger community as well.

In tandem with this partnership, we also have initiated the Marywood Legacy Campaign to raise funds needed to expand our capacity and meet the health care demands of our own Sisters and those of our neighbors in the Grand Rapids community. As is our tradition, we did not enter into this partnership and this campaign lightly. Rather, after reflection, prayer, and study, we determined that this path is the right one for our congregation and our community at large. These ventures are bringing new life to the entire Marywood Campus. Just as the birds are beginning to sing and flowers are shooting up, a new direction for our 800-year-old mission and ministry has arrived, filled with hope and energy. Learn more about our partnership with Porter Hills and the evolution of our health care ministries on the Marywood campus in the story on page 4; and learn about our Marywood Legacy Campaign on page 28.

Dear Friends:

O from the prioress

ne of the things I love about the internet is dictionary.com. I consult it whenever I need a good turn of phrase, or a suitable word. For example – when asked to write a brief reflection about delivering hope. While drawn by spring fever to “deliver a pitch” (Go Tigers!) a more apt definition in this context is “to do or carry out as promised.” We Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids have staked our lives on a promise, in the form of the vow we took as women religious. We carry out that promise by dedicating our lives to the mission of proclaiming the reign of God (Constitution paragraph 5). That singular promise has taken us to places never contemplated, to unexpected roles, to new ministries, and to deeply contemplative moments of shared life and prayer. In our Christian tradition, faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). But what is hope? Hope is the feeling that things will turn out for the best (dictionary.com). For Christians, hope is ultimately hope in Christ (Frederick Buechner). Delivering hope, then, is no more and no less than carrying out, as promised, our role of proclaiming the reign of God wherever we are, with whomever God invites us to journey, for as long as we are there, in whatever way we can help make manifest God’s reign.

mentoring a new generation to do what once only we could do. Delivering also can mean giving birth: something with which our Maternidad in Chimbote, Peru is intimately familiar. If we circle back to the identity of Dominicans as the Order of Preachers, delivering means to give forth in words. Finally, in the tradition of Moses and Jesus, delivering means to liberate, emancipate, release, redeem, or rescue. Delivering hope is an eminently worthwhile endeavor. It puts one in company with human and divine, meets people where they are, heals wounded bodies, minds and spirits, and shares gifts received while turning them into gifts given. Delivering hope requires a heart and mind and spirit open to transformation and unfazed by limits. Immersed in the mystery of birth, death and rebirth, it is a fulfilling vocation, worthy of a lifetime commitment. With continued blessings of hope,

Maureen Geary, OP Prioress

Of course, dictionary.com doesn’t stop with just a single definition. Delivering also means to carry and hand over: such as the notion of educating and

emboldened by faith, serving with joy www.grdominicans.org

his mission is one filled with both the joy of new life, seen through a ministry in midwifery, and the sadness of natural and human made devastation, seen in the form of earthquakes and corrupt forces dominating the people. In early 1963, Dominican Sisters Marie Dominica Viesnoraitis and Herman Marie Maez responded to a request from Pope Pius XII to bring the Word of God to those in danger of being converted to atheistic communism. The work in Chimbote quickly expanded to bring not only

religious education, but medical care and hope to families whose lot in life did not include health care, education, or economic security. The priests in Chimbote, dismayed at the number of dead babies brought to their door to be baptized, soon implored the Sisters to “do something about it.” And so they did. They called upon Sisters Margaret Mary Birchmeier and Innocence Andres, certified in both nursing and midwifery, to join them and initiate a child and maternal care program in September 1965.

Oasis of Hope Through the past fifty years, Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters, with the help of many, have built an oasis of education, health care, and hope for thousands. With the people of Chimbote, they experienced drought, floods, heat waves, earthquakes, terrorist attacks, epidemics of dreadful diseases, ongoing political corruption, violence, and death. The Sisters remained steadfast through it all – as teachers, catechists, midwives, nurses, and social workers. But, most importantly as Madres – Mothers – as the Peruvian people refer to the Sisters. A maternity hospital, prenatal education, and well baby clinic became integral parts of the program established in Chimbote and operated simultaneously with religious education. The medical clinic was expanded to treat people who were poor and suffering from myriad diseases and afflictions: hepatitis, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, meningitis, skin infections, dehydration, and asthma from the heavy air pollution. Overcoming Adversity In May 1970, an earthquake struck the area, killing 70,000 people and destroying 75% of the city. “When are

“When the people found out that the Sisters were staying, many said, “Su presencia nos da experanza.” (Your presence is a sign of hope for us.) you leaving?” the people asked. “Why stay? Everything is gone.” When the people found out that the Sisters were staying, many said, “Su presencia nos da experanza.” (Your presence is a sign of hope for us.) The troubles of the Peruvian people were far from over. Military regimes that used terror and death to control the people ruled in the decades that followed the earthquake. Some groups targeted missionaries. But the Sisters stayed and took on additional ministries. At the request of a local judge, they began caring for orphans who were abandoned, abused, or neglected. Today the compound, known as Centro de Obras Sociales, consists of a medical clinic, maternity hospital, clinical laboratory, physical therapy, an orphanage, and convent as well as a general purpose classroom. Outside the walls of the compound desert sands, traffic, and noise greet the visitor. Within the compound, palm

trees soar, hibiscus grows, and hope and health are restored every day. Empowered Change Fifty years is a commitment of service that makes a significant difference. Life is better compared to fifty years ago. Fewer babies come to the clinic with severe malnutrition; women have babies at a later age, and have healthier babies with higher birth weights. The birth of twins is no longer a sad occasion, since there is an opportunity to nurture both. Local women and men now staff the clinic, hospital, medical laboratory, orphanage, and educational programs. Those who have come to this Peruvian city by the sea are changed. Some, like Sisters Margaret Mary and Lillian Bockheim, have given their entire professional lives to ministry in this challenging place. They’ve embarked on an adventure that delivers hope with every newborn baby and healthy mother. ~ Sister Mary Navarre, OP

renewal. With a complete rebuilding of Aquinata Hall and several upgrades to the Marywood Health Center, both facilities now offer a new model of care as well. This holistic model also incorporates one of the newest programs based on campus, Marywood Home Health.

The second floor team at Aquinata Hall work hard to assure the comfort and security of every resident. L-R: Alyson Lynne, Resident Assistant; Tasheca Smith, Home Maker; Lorna Dawson, Director of Care; Jayme McKinney, Resident Assistant; and Lillian Sudue, Memory Care Assistant.

as Marywood Circle, committed to deliver quality, affordable care that is enriched by a faithbased orientation in the Catholic tradition.

“We offer a continuity of care that provides a sense of community and security for everyone here,” says Lorna. “This is their home. We want each resident to feel comfortable here.”

Many of the Aquinata residents are active in both the Marywood and greater Grand Rapids communities. They organize their own days, volunteer whenever possible, and companion one another.

“Because a lot of our residents are so active, our staff assists them in their endeavors, but we do not take over for them,” says Lorna. “We encourage our residents to do as much for themselves for as long as possible.” Marywood Health Center Unlike the assisted living facility of Aquinata Hall, Marywood Health Center acts as a short-term rehabilitation center. “The Health Center will be a premier rehabilitation facility,” says Lisa McMichael, Administrator for Marywood Health Center. “The building itself is beautiful, and doesn’t feel like a typical nursing home, which it’s not. We are proud of the sustainable features throughout the building.”

In fact, Marywood Health Center will differentiate itself from other facilities every step of the way, including offering all residents private rooms. This level of privacy reflects the Marywood commitment to affirming the dignity and individual treatment of every resident. Marywood Home Health Marywood Home Health is a ministry of the Dominican Sisters in partnership with Porter Hills Retirement Communities & Services.

For more information on Marywood Circle and our three very special health initiatives, contact Yvonne Rackow at 616-514-3106 or yrackow@grdominicans.org.

Marywood Home Health provides high quality services for clients in their own homes, including personal care, licensed nursing, rehabilitation therapy, health monitoring, mental health services, and spiritual companionship. These services combine the very best qualities of the Dominican Sisters and Porter Hills. Both organizations are committed to offering respectful care and comprehensive, innovative services to elder adults in the greater Grand Rapids area.

The partnership offers both organizations the opportunity to focus on areas of strength while enhancing services provided to home health clients. The Dominican Sisters champion the spiritual companionship programming and the licensed health care providers sustain the nursing and rehabilitation programs offered in home. ~ Matthew Bergevin

Delivering Hope “

W

e deliver care Dominican style,” says Linda Thiel, OP, PhD, FNP, RN, Professor of Nursing, University of Detroit-Mercy in Grand Rapids. “Dominican style is to praise, to bless, and to preach. As Sisters working in health care we do that… in relationship to God and to our patients. It is really grounded in the mission of the Grand Rapids Dominicans.” Today there are many Dominican Sisters actively working to provide health care “Dominican style” throughout the world. These Sisters start with their technical knowledge and infuse it with prayerful contemplation and study meshed with a deep commitment to community and ministry that are the pillars of Dominican life. “I think people understand that I’m a regular person, I’m not claiming to be better or holier than anyone 6

else. I’m in the trenches… that is how I like it,” says Chris Wood, OP, RN, PhD, GNP, Associate Professor of Nursing at Goshen College in Goshen, IN. “I come as a person in a certain tradition, in an 800-yearold Dominican tradition. I share that when it is appropriate.”

Sister Joyce Williams ministers with patients as Staff Chaplain at St. Louis University Hospital and often shares that experience with a Chaplain Intern, like Amy Seat.

Discovering Their Ministry In some cases, the draw to a career in health care resulted from personal experiences or challenges that a Sister overcame. Often, this was a second career or one that the Sister considered over the years but needed encouragement to pursue. “It’s a precious life. Not for everybody, but it certainly is for me,” says Susanne Tracy, OP, known as ‘Sister Sue the Funny Nun’ throughout Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids where she serves as Hospital Staff Chaplain – with a focus in Oncology. “I have survived cancer four times. I see it as God’s plan for me to be available for others in this way.” Rex Larsen/Grand Rapids Press

Licensed Pharmacist with HealthFirst Pharmacy in Owosso, MI and Consultant to the Board of CRxSP (Community Prescription Support Program) as well as Instructor for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Program at Dorsey School in Saginaw, MI. “I fell into health ministry, I didn’t seek it out,” says Joan Williams, OP, serving as the Co-administrator of Living with HIV-AIDS in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, since 1998. Sister Joan was asked by the Dominican community to accept this ministry working with families of children who have HIV-AIDS in a poor industrial city as well as in some rural regions of Honduras. “My ministry is wherever God calls me, tomorrow God may wink again and call me somewhere else,” says Roxane Dansereau, OP, who serves as Staff Nurse-Oncology in the private practice of David Cook, MD and Jonathan Abramson, MD in Essexville, MI.

Being Present The practice of active presence at the bedside is common Sister Sue (right) brings her own brand of humor to all of the patients she visits as Staff Chaplain for Oncology at Spectrum Health. among the Dominican Sisters working in “If it hadn’t been for the health care fields today. Many of the community encouraging me to go Sisters find that their presence is into pharmacy; if it hadn’t been what differentiates them from other for the Sisters saying that they are practitioners. praying for me and for my patients; “The neat thing that I see about if it hadn’t been for the Sisters nursing and religious life is that they encouraging me to start the clinic; complement each other. We see I wouldn’t have done any of it,” says those Jesus moments all the time. Phyllis Klonowski, OP, RPh, MS, a Or we hope to see them,” says Sister

Linda. “You try to be present so that you are aware of those moments.” “A chaplain’s heart and head and gut is to bring a presence,” says Sister Sue. “That is a profound privilege to enter into the vulnerability of a patient’s life. I’m there to invite people to maximize life even in the tough stuff. Even in the midst of their personal ‘mell of a hess’!” “I bring hope every day by providing a sacred presence; a holy presence; a positive face,” says Sister Joan. “With the HIV ministry, you can laugh and cry together at the same time almost every day.” “My mother said that she would put me through nursing school if every patient was someone related to me,” chuckles Anne Francis Erndt, OP, LPN, Post Surgical Orthopedic Nurse at McClaren Bay Regional Medical Center in Bay City, MI. “So that is how I’ve tried to approach nursing, as if every patient is someone related to me. Sometimes you have grumpy aunts and uncles!” Continued on next page

“I try to help my students understand that the five or ten minutes that they spend with a patient who has dementia or who is alone in the nursing home is their gift to that person. Not to under estimate the value of that gift,” says Sister Chris.”That is where our humanity meets their humanity.” “I think being with people who are suffering and giving them the space to tell their story is probably one of the biggest blessings of my ministry,” says Joyce Williams, OP, BCC, Hospital Staff Chaplain at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, MO. “They might not remember my name or what I look like, but they do remember that there was someone with them, holding it together until they were able to hold it together themselves.”

Providing a Faith-filled Healing Ministry “I’m a hands-on nurse. I still wear the habit. When I started working here in 1974, they asked me if I would continue wearing it,” says Sister Anne Francis. “When I’m at work, I’m ministering as both a nurse and a Sister.” Each of the Dominican Sisters working in health care infuses the presence of Christ into her work in different ways. For some it is direct when a patient asks for prayers. But, for others it is an example or a simple connection, reaching through the fragility of the human body to touch the human spirit with a message of faith and hope.

“There is just a sense of knowing that I’m not doing this alone,” says Mario Pavoni, OP, Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant at Holland Home in Grand Rapids and Guild Certified Feldenkrais Teacher®. “It’s just straight up that way; I couldn’t do it without God.” “This is the first job I’ve had where I’m working directly for the people of God. This is where I was meant to be,” says Anne Breitag, OP, BCC, Hospital Staff Chaplain at Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw, MI. “It’s a healing ministry. I’ve likened it to a soul touching a soul when I place my hands on someone. They are giving you permission to touch them and help them heal,” says Sister Mario.

Marywood Legacy Campaign Update

Delivering Hope

Dear Friends of the Dominican Sisters:

T

he Dominican Sisters are very dear to us not only for the work they perform so quietly, consistently, and selflessly every day, but for all that they embody. When faced with finding a solution to their own increasing health care needs they not only found one, but made it into a ministry focused on serving others at the same time. The Marywood Legacy Campaign seeks to raise funds in support of this new ministry that also provides health care options for the Sisters. We readily agreed to co-chair this campaign because we believe in the Sisters and know that there is a vital need for these services in the community. The funds raised by this campaign also support a thoughtful strategic plan to ensure that the beautiful Marywood campus remains a vibrant part of the West Michigan community for many years to come. We know how challenging it has been for the Sisters – so used to giving help – to ask for it. So it is on their behalf, and on behalf of all the people this new venture will serve, that we encourage you to support this campaign. It is good for the Sisters. It is good for our area seniors. And it is good for our community as a whole. Delivering hope today and promising hope for tomorrow. That is the Dominican Sisters’ legacy. With Our Sincere Regards, Rita Kirkwood Arnette Kraus Marywood Legacy Campaign Co-Chairs

ABOUT US We the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids are a community of 229 vowed religious women who follow the Catholic traditions of St. Dominic and St. Catherine of Siena. Since 1877, we have taught children and ministered to the orphaned, partnered with nonprofit agencies and served in hospital ministries, social service agencies and hospice care. We have created works of art, helped lead liturgical reform and fostered life in parishes and communities. Today, based on the Marywood campus in Grand Rapids, Michigan, we engage in a wide variety of ministries throughout the United States and missions in Peru and Honduras. By your donation you will participate in, and make possible, many creative and innovative responses to unmet needs in our society.
