What is a Jubilarian?

Our Hebrew roots provide a tradition for Jubilee to be celebrated every fifty years. In our Dominican tradition, we have developed our own customs.

Our celebration of Jubilee brings our Jubilarians back to their origin in the Congregation. We honor each woman and find ways to identify her unique contributions to our lives. We tell stories about our lives, our learnings, and our joys and sorrows.

We celebrate!

Each Jubilarian has a story to tell, and the common threads of our stories are enhanced by one another.

The unfolding of the mystery of God’s presence in our lives is awesome. We recognize this unfolding mystery of dying and being reborn as we walk together throughout life. Each Sister’s and Associate’s YES, each day, enhances the whole community.

As we continue to be inflamed with contemplative love daily, we are so grateful for these holy disciples who celebrate their Jubilee this year. We continue to be enriched by their lives.

oming from a large, “yours, mine, and ours” family, I was the 17th of 18 children.

In this large family, I learned love, sharing, forgiveness, generosity, and hard work!

I also loved to dance! Coming home one night from an evening of dance, I heard the Lord say, “This is all well and good, but what are you going to do with your life?” This was the Lord’s invitation to me to join in the dance of Dominican life.

My 75 years as a Dominican Sister have been filled with more than I could imagine!

I’ve had countless opportunities to dance with God’s people in my ministries as an educator and to share the love of Jesus.

My goal as an educator was to teach the three Rs of Reverence, Respect, and Responsibility. I love people and am a positive and happy person. I have a great sense of humor which leads to lots of laughter.

I thank God for every good gift and for the dance of this my 75th Jubilee!

I

t is hard to believe so many years have passed since that day we first walked into Marywood (a place which changed over time – yet remains “home”). These years (and the 365 days that made each up) have been good, challenging, difficult, happy, and sad at times, and somehow we have lived through it all to fullness of days!!

We have seen growth in our families with weddings and births, and we have been diminished at other times and suffered through the deaths of parents, brothers, sisters, and friends – including classmates Amata, Theresa, Jeannette, Margaret, and Marie Benedict. Most of us celebrated our 50th in Branson and made lasting memories and our 60th at the lake! Plus, we had many “class dinners” over the years during Dominican Days. So many shared memories, so many more made with family and friends!

There has been travel for study and prayer (and lots for just plain fun!) – tours and pilgrimages - my last trip about 4-5 years ago to Fanjeaux remains especially memorable!

Now here we are on the threshold of 75!

For all that has been, we say “THANKS” and for all that remains, we say “AMEN!” I am extremely grateful for my years in ministry as grade school and high school teacher and principal and now for 40+ as Director of Faith Formation in three different parishes. Each ministry has held its difficulties; but through it all, there have been joys and moments of delight too numerous to count! God is so loving, gracious, kind, and good! Let the JUBILEE begin!!

he Sister journey that began on September 8, 1946, has brought me to celebrate 75 years as a Dominican.

“Gracias a Dios” continues to be my daily prayer of thanks.

The Silva family, with Brunita and Lucio Silva and myself as the youngest of 15, taught me about living as a thoughtful, helpful person with a generous heart for all who came to our door. This attitude was continued as a Dominican in ministry as teacher, principal, Director of Religious Education, Pastoral Associate and Director of the Hispanic Formation Program, and Vicar for Hispanics of the Saginaw Diocese.

Life poses new opportunities. For me one of the favorites was when Sister Esther Okwor returned to Nigeria taking with her pillowcase dresses for little girls made by Sister Ann Hehl and myself. At present, crocheted prayer shawls and afghans are going to Bethany Christian Services and the Help Pregnancy Center. These are given to mothers and new babies as welcome gifts.

I am able to crochet because my Mama taught me at age 6. Oh, what fun!!

Since our move to the new Marywood, the sewing machine has found a new home and, as always, seems to find someone needing mending, fixing a seam, or just some advice on a sewing need.

This is always welcome.

I have also revived my tatting skills, and cards are a result. I’m sure these skills will be welcomed in heaven.

So I say, “Gracias a Dios” for my dear family, friends, Dominican Sisters and Associates with whom I am blessed to share my life.

M

y life began on March 19, 1932, the oldest of six children given to William and Blanche Mead Schafer. My maternal Grandmother walked several miles over snowdrifts to help my mother. The next day, Sunday, Grandma and Grandpa Schafer took me to St. Philomena Church, Beal City, to have me baptized Mary Agnes. It was the custom to have the child baptized on the first Sunday after its birth.

I was born on Saturday.

I watched my sister and four brothers grow up. One Sunday when I was very small, I noticed several things walk up the aisle in church. When we got out to the car after Mass, my first question was “What were those things?” They were Sisters. From then on, I was going to be one of them. As children, my siblings and I planted a lot of seeds in the garden. We always wondered how that tiny carrot seed knew it was to be a big orange carrot. What a mystery! When I got older, I became the hired person. I drove the tractor and prepared fields for the planting of seeds, rode the combine, and helped make hay.

The cows even let me milk them.

I left home when I was a junior in high school to be an aspirant at Marywood. I graduated in June of 1951 and entered the community that same month and started college at Aquinas.

I received the white Dominican habit on January 31. I made First Profession on February 2, 1953, and began teaching third and fourth grades at St. Anthony, Grand Rapids, on February 6. The rest of my ministry days were spent teaching.

I returned to the Motherhouse in July of 2009. I have been blessed during these years with time to do some ESL adult tutoring, taking some classes, praying, and making new friends.

ndeed, the Lord has a plan for me.

I was born in Gaylord and attended St. Mary’s School. For 12 years I had the Dominican Sisters; so when I felt that God called me, I entered Marywood. I have been a teacher, principal, pastoral minister, and a parish administrator. Gobles was a wonderful experience of church. It became St. Jude Parish in 1985, and I was named Parish Administrator.

The second most astounding ministry happened in the 20 years I spent as an ESL tutor and citizenship instructor.

I spent ten years as a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House.

I am grateful to the community for the wonderful opportunities for education.

I received both my B.A. and M.A. from Aquinas College as well as an M.A. from Notre Dame.

Sr. Janice spent ten years as a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House.

When I was little, I only traveled to Grandma’s house. When I was able, I saved money to travel. My travels have taken me to all of the States (except Hawaii) as well as Europe and the Holy Land. I have had a full, rich life, and God has had a wonderful plan for me. I thank my parents, my siblings as well as the Community.

I

am the youngest of four children born to James and Antonette Glowa Kolasa on July 26, 1933, in Elmira, Michigan, and named Barbara Anne. St. Thomas Aquinas was our home parish. I attended Elmira Rural Agricultural School through the eighth grade. I received my high school education at St. Mary’s, Gaylord, where I was taught

by Grand Rapids Dominicans.

On September 30, 1951, I joined the Dominican Sisters, Marywood, and at Reception received the name Sister Mary Joyce of Our Mother of Confidence.

I earned a B.A. at Aquinas College, an M.A. in Elementary Administration at Central Michigan University, and my Permanent Certification in Elementary Education from the State of Michigan.

Beginning in 1953, I was a teacher and also a principal until 1983. I taught in Bay City; West Branch; Blessed Sacrament, St. Thomas and St. Anthony schools in Grand Rapids; Saginaw; Essexville; Merrill; and St. Mary’s in Gaylord.

In 1983 I became a pastoral minister to the elderly of the Basilica of St. Adalbert Parish in Grand Rapids. I visited and brought Holy Communion to shut-ins at home and in many nursing homes. In 2000 I went north to Acme and then to St. Joseph’s parish on the Old Mission Peninsula, Traverse City, to continue this ministry. Retiring from full time ministry in 2007, I moved to Marywood and now am residing at Aquinata Hall.

was born in Saginaw, MI to Manuela and Jose Maria Gonzalez, my faith-filled parents from Mexico. While attending St. Joseph High School, I assisted at the maternity clinic with the Daughters of Charity.

Sister Dorena is one of many Sisters who gather at Aquinata Hall to stuff and put together dolls to give to the children of Bethany Christian Services.

After entering the Congregation, I taught children in the early grades in numerous cities including Detroit, Saginaw, Grand Rapids, and Albuquerque.

I taught English to adult Spanish speakers, held small group Bible study with women, and assisted at Cursillos, Catholic faith training sessions.

In Omaha, I served the immigrant community at Juan Diego Clinic as translator for both doctors and patients.

In Saginaw, I was a hospital chaplain for Veterans. In Grand Rapids, I served children at St. Francis/Guadalupe Parish’s religious education program, weekly served meals to families at St. Alphonsus, and prayed with others at Catholic Central.

My love of children, service, and prayer gatherings translates into preaching God’s love for each person. My smile and laughter echoes in the halls at Aquinata where I continue to pray for everyone I have met through the years. I recognize God’s abundant blessings in my life.

hrough these sixty years of Dominican Life, it is true: the Joy of God is our strength.

Jesus, my mentor/friend, knew this. Through Jesus I grew to discover Joy is the fruit of living the Paschal Mystery: birth, death, and resurrection – the mystery we celebrate every Eucharist.

Ever since I can remember, I always wanted to love God with my whole mind, heart, and soul. I grew to acknowledge that this desire to be one with God meant me recognizing God’s presence in my life and loving myself and others as a saint/sinner.

I came to know the importance of the relationship between prayer, study, community life, and service as areas of Dominican life: Study brings an understanding of self and others; prayer opens my heart to receive God’s transformative Love; community living and service allow for the pragmatic practice of study and prayer.

On this journey, I have been blessed by my parents; the two Grand Rapids Dominicans who taught me my eight years of Grade School, Sister Marie Vianney and Sister Francis Xavier, at St. Michael’s Suttons Bay; and all those I met through my years as elementary principal/ teacher, years as a novice/formation director, my time of being with the Dominican Sisters in Nigeria, and the directees who have enriched my life by their faith as well as being a member of the Congregation’s leadership team at the end of the 20th century.

How blessed I am to be a vowed member of the Dominican Family – family who mirrors for me the God of Love, the Word of Love, and the Spirit of Love.

aving been asked to write a reflection as I celebrate 60 years as a Grand Rapids Dominican, I find that a bit of context is helpful. As I write this on February 15, our world is facing global warming rapidly approaching the point of no return, a worldwide pandemic that has been raging for two years, and Russia poised to invade the Ukraine. Here at home, our Sisters living at Marywood are, this week, moving to the “New Marywood” at 111 Lakeside Drive.

As I try to process these realities, I turn to a reading from today’s Mass. To paraphrase Psalm 31:3-4: “God, You are our protector-our rock, our stronghold. Lead us, guide us, for the sake of your name.”

Looking back over my 60 years as a Grand Rapids Dominican, I recognize that God has been our guide, our protector, and our stronghold, both collectively and individually. I find that my strongest and most enduring attitude is one of gratitude. I am grateful for the leaders of our congregation whose inspired leadership has brought us to this point. I am grateful for those Sisters with whom I have lived and worked. I am grateful for my family and grateful to God for leading me to the Grand Rapids Dominicans.

What the future holds, we simply do not know, but we do know that God is our rock and stronghold, and so we trust what is to come.

I

left my family home in Westphalia to enter the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters on September 8th, 1961. At this time, my intentions were to be a classroom teacher. So as a Postulant I attended Aquinas College. Going back to school after working in an office for six years was difficult, but I survived.

After the first year, the next chapter was the Novitiate. This year God had other plans, not to be a teacher but to serve his people in the Ministry of Food Service. I enjoyed working in the East Wing Kitchen where I started and from there to the House of Studies.

My ministry changed from 1985 to 1987 to being a driver to take the Sisters to their appointments. I found this a joy and very rewarding.

So back to Food Service in convents, in Seminaries, in Assistant Living Homes, One Way House for women, and Jellema House for men. So, my thought of teaching in a classroom turned out to be teaching God’s people in other ways.

The highlight of one of my ministries was working at St. Laurence Seminary in Mt. Calvary, Wisconsin. Sister Maureen Sheahan and I went out as a team. The two of us, with some help from the ladies of the village, served 350 meals three times a day.

Over the years I’ve enjoyed traveling, stamp collecting, watching basketball and football games, and sending greeting cards to all of my family members, especially on birthdays and anniversaries, just to stay connected. I must add, I never buy a card, I use all re-cycled ones.

ooking forward to a name change at reception, I was so sure it wasn’t going to change and had gotten so engrossed in everyone else’s name, I had to ask my Dad, “What name did the Bishop give me?” I guess since Sister Leonard had suggested I ask for it, I felt it was already set in stone. My name had never meant too much to me until later when I realized I was not changing my vocation but answering the Baptismal call given me shortly after my birth. I had expressed my desire to be a Sister like Sister Leonard in my early CCD years, and it just never left me. Nurtured by a family of Faith through losses and hard work, I realized that Baptismal dedication was answering the daily call to accept God’s invitation to life and then remaining faithful to God’s love.

Thus, I found myself taken in that daily adventure from teaching to accounting to hospitality and housekeeping. Then through accounting, I found myself in parish ministry and bookkeeping, RCIA, administration and renovation of churches.

With many crafts filling my extra time, I have been privileged to develop a love of iconography.

Attending a workshop on icon writing developed into a dreamed-of achievement in my life.

My love of the art allowed me to attempt to produce the image of Jesus who is the image of his Father. What a humbling gift!

All has been gift in my life including family, friends, and the gift of God’s love through Baptism and doing one’s daily best to remain loyal to that love. With gratitude I say, ‘Thanks be to God’ for all who have touched me throughout the past 60 years. My gratitude for living with women faithful to their vocation and continuing spirit of loving God through their Baptismal commitment and commitment to our Community. God is so good.

orn in the cold and snow of January 1942, the oldest of three and later four children, my early years were shaped by the environment of rural Michigan farm life.

There were many hours of exploring woods and fields, discovering secrets of nature, and experiencing solitude, but also enjoyment of a warm family and good neighbors. School and study were always a great love. A public school environment of mixed faith traditions contributed to my sensitivity for people of diverse background.

In 1961 I joined the Dominican Sisters~ Grand Rapids; and equipped with degrees from Aquinas College and later Providence College with additional study at Aquinas Institute, I moved into ministry in education and later in pastoral ministry. Ministries took me to Alpena, Saginaw, Gaylord, and Herron, Michigan. Later years have brought me back to Grand Rapids and Marywood. Most recently I have ministered at Dominican Center Marywood as facilitator and presenter in Dominican Center Spiritual Formation Programs and as spiritual director.

The years bring a blossoming of the seeds of early life roaming the fields, the woods, and the lakeshore of our Mid-Michigan farm.

Love for all of Creation grows as I develop the gardens around our Annchester home and experience good local neighbors as well as our global world of neighbors. As I watch new life spring forth each year, awareness of an overflowing and ever flowing fountain of God’s Love invites response to become a conduit of love for God’s People and all of Creation. In the words of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, “The Earth is crammed with heaven and every common bush afire with God.” For all of this and for 60 years as a Grand Rapids Dominican Sister, I am filled with gratitude.

Our gracious God continues to be with us as the journey goes on.

he invitation to do something special with my life was touched by an intersection of God’s call and at various times the presence of Grand Rapids Dominican women who were perceived as “very real persons”. The call, which was personal, took root in the faith environment of my family, my church, and the desire to continue a journey already begun but now to be supported and enriched by Dominican community life and prayer. Hidden also was the hope of satisfying a certain longing for an added dimension to what was already in process.

And so at Jubilee, I look back upon music education and religious education ministry at West Branch, Muskegon, BayCity/Essexville, Hemlock, and Merrill.

So many blessings and struggles to reflect upon and always a grateful heart.

To my Sisters who know me because we have lived together or our paths have crossed often, to those who know of me, to those who still may say, “Is she one of ours?”, to my family and dear friends, I give thanks for your support, compassion, and the sharing of God’s peace.

Our gracious God continues to be with us as the journey goes on.

I

lived a simple life with my mother and three brothers on a farm in Michigan.

My early years were enriched by the example and lives of my faith-filled grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters planted the seed of helping others and assisted me in cultivating and nurturing the growth of that seed. It was brought to fruition when I became a Dominican Sister. Embracing a life of service, the charism of joy and hospitality permeated each of my ministry choices: elementary teaching, directing Religious Education, developing Family Enrichment, administering Soup Kitchens and Food Pantries, assisting homeless families, and coordinating Neighborhood Community Action programs.

As a bereavement minister with Salish and Kootenai Native people on Flathead Reservation in Montana, I appreciate indigenous women as spirit-filled, brave, robust, and resilient. They are caretakers of earth, continually reflecting on the wonders of creation. Respected and honored, they teach the younger generation their native language, tribal traditions, and cultural values.

s I write this reflection celebrating the 60 years of my life as a Grand Rapids Dominican Sister, we are in the midst of moving from our 100-year-old Marywood Motherhouse into our New Marywood.

After 60 years, this is still the home and life I desire.

Today, Sr. Jo enjoys using her gifts to crochet hats that are donated to the Santa Claus Girls and given to children in Kent County.

Sixty years ago, with a small trunk holding my possessions, I entered the east wing entrance to be greeted by Mother Victor.

My new space in the New Marywood has the same view of the Old Marywood as I had coming up that drive on September 8, 1961. As I gaze out my window this morning, I am reminded of the many emotions I experienced that day when I saw the building that was to be my home.

I was excited. I knew this was the beginning of an adventure into the unknown. I was nervous. I was not certain I was ready for all the challenges this life would bring. I was committed.

I had a desire to face my fears and doubts with courage. I was determined to give my all for a chance to live as a part of this marvelous group of women.

I was completely aware of my utter dependence on the Goodness of God to accompany me on the journey.

As I gaze up the hill this morning and see the old Marywood, I find these same emotions surface. After 60 years, this is still the home and life I desire.

entered from Saint Mary’s of Redford Parish in Detroit, Michigan.

My first encounter with the Grand Rapids Dominicans was while I was in Nursing Training in Pontiac, MI. Sister Ann Francis Erndt, who was also in Nursing Training, invited me to make a retreat at Marywood.

My second encounter was in Ann Arbor, MI where I worked as a nurse at the Veteran’s Hospital. Several Dominican Sisters came to visit their brothers and fathers who were patients. What attracted me was their sense of being “real, wholesome” Sisters with a deep sense of joy and a prayerful spirit. The Lord has given me an interesting road to travel during these past 60 years in community. My ministries included Nursing at Albuquerque, NM, at Nazareth Hospital and El Centro California Nursing Home.

I came back to Grand Rapids and worked in the inner city. I worked at Heartside Ministry and Rose Haven ministering to women who are enslaved in prostitution, trafficking, and drugs. I was working the streets and visiting jails where I did group sessions and assessments to place women in a recovery home.

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink,

ifty years ago this June, I traveled to Grand Rapids, Michigan, from my home in Penasco, New Mexico, to more fully live Jesus’ command to Love our Neighbor.

As a Dominican, I believe this is what our lives have been about, to love our neighbor and to help carry the cross of each person we meet.

My life as a Dominican has been gracefilled, not always easy, but filled with love, compassion, and faith. I have loved each official ministry I have had; but, more than that, I have loved the people I have encountered during these 50 years.

May the next 50 years be as grace-filled for our beloved Dominican Congregation.

I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me…

I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers/sisters, you did it to me.” ~ Matthew 25:31-36

As a long-time teacher and principal in New Mexico, Sr. Ada (far left) served through education, seeking answers and opportunities for students, teachers, and parents.

A

transformative moment for me as a Dominican Associate was the last day of class at the end of the three-year Spiritual Direction Practicum. Sister Nancy Brousseau and Judy Hahn, our instructors, had equipped us with great teaching and training. Yet, I and the other students felt ill-equipped to go out into the world and journey alongside directees.

Nancy and Judy gave us sacred space to name our fears out loud. “What if we screw up someone’s spiritual life?” was our biggest concern.

After we finished our group lament, Nancy pulled out her Dominican index finger, shook it at us, and with holy fire in her voice, said these words, which I now paraphrase, “God has given you the charism of being a spiritual director.

Of course, you need the Holy Spirit’s help to carry out your calling. But if you hide your gift under a bushel basket, the world will be a darker place. So go forth in confidence and let Christ’s Light shine in and through you.”

Those words have continued to inspire and shape my ministry as a Dominican Associate over these past 25 years.

Even now as I reflect on them, they bring holy tears to my eyes.

I am grateful to the Dominican Community and God for helping me discover the contemplative path that grounds us in the Source of our Being and gives us the courage to let Christ’s Light shine in and through us. Blessed be God forever.

Having “coffee with the Creator” is the best part of each day! That special time of meditation with God has convinced me that “Quiet Time” solves everything.
