From the President & Board Chair Dear Dominican Family & Friends, We are both excited and proud of Dominican’s many accomplishments throughout this past year. Our community weathered the pandemic in the most exceptional way possible, thanks to the dedication and commitment shown by our faculty and staff, students, parents and YOU, our donors. Dominican’s academic rigor and our commitment to truly know every student By Name, By Need and By Gift never faltered. The Catholic, college-preparatory education and overall high school experience we provide our students is unmatched by any high school, bar none. Our 2021-2022 school year is off to an excellent start as well. Enrollment has increased and we have happily resumed all of our pre-pandemic programs and extracurriculars for our students, these opportunities and experiences are created to best prepare them for their respective college and career aspirations. President Leanne Giese and Board Chair John Desing with National Merit Semifinalists Josie Balisteri ’22 and Paul Firsan ’22

Our seniors are leading Dominican’s school year with incredible enthusiasm, all while juggling heavy academic loads, completing their U-KNIGHTed in Service Capstone projects and finalizing their college applications. Two of our top seniors, Josie Balistreri and Paul Firsan, who were recently named National Merit Semifinalists, are also busy completing the required application process in hopes to be named National Merit Finalists. Being recognized as National Merit Semifinalists means Josie and Paul scored in the top 1% of all students from across the country who took the PSAT this past Spring. If selected as Finalists, they each have the potential to earn 4-year renewable scholarships for their academic accomplishments. It is also exciting to share that our Knight Vision 2.0 Capital Campaign is progressing nicely, with more than 80 donors already committing their support. There is a dedicated article in this magazine which details the campaign priorities. Knight Vision 2.0 is a game-changer for our Dominican; just another reason it’s such an exciting time to be a Knight! We cherish the faith traditions and maintain the academic excellence that helped create our wonderful community, while continuing to prepare our students to meet the ever changing and high expectations our graduates face as they prepare to lead our global society. We know Dominican’s continued success is only possible because of our supportive alumni, parents and friends; thank you for all you do! Providence can provide. Providence did provide. Providence will provide. Go Knights!

Dominican Alumni Gather for Reunion Weekend Hundreds of alumni took part in the Alumni & Friends All School Reunion on Friday, August 13th. Festivities began Friday evening at Dominican which included tours of the school, yearbooks, drinks, and food catered by Katie Pandl ’75 of Sendik’s Catering. The evening concluded with the 2021 Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony of six alumni, followed by the 2020 and 2021 Young Alum & Distinguished Alum Awards ceremony. Individual class reunions took place at various locations on Saturday, and a record number of alumni participated in the 38th Bill Crowley Scholarship Golf outing on Monday, wrapping up a fun-filled Dominican weekend!

Distinguished Alum of the Year: MaryAnne Mullaney ’75

Young Alum of the Year: Amber Rafeet ’06 August

As an alum who has continuously supported and advocated for Dominican for more than four decades, MaryAnne’s multiple nominations made her the clear choice as the 2021 Distinguished Alum of the Year. She obtained her teaching degree from the University of Dayton and upon her return to Whitefish Bay, started a kindergarten program at St. Monica School and has expertly guided the spiritual, social, emotional, and academic growth of her young learners for the last 41 years.

Amber’s sense of social responsibility and respect for human dignity exemplify the Dominican High School mission in a way which made her the perfect choice for the 2021 Young Alum of the Year. She obtained her B.A. in Spanish and Legal Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and law degree from University of Wisconsin Law School. She works at Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee as Staff Attorney in the Guardian ad Litem Division advocating for children from indigent families in family court.

MaryAnne has shared her love of Dominican by attending events, supporting students through KnightWalk and scholarship, and has also facilitated tours for her young students to meet with Dominican students. As one of her nominees put it, “MaryAnne lives and breathes Dominican’s core values, and parents and children fortunate enough to be touched by her are forever transformed.”

Amber is the incoming President of the WI Association of African American Lawyers, member of the State Bar of WI Board of Governors, serves as a member of the State Bar’s Legal Assistance Committee and member of Women in Focus, Inc. where she sponsored Free Libraries throughout the City of Madison and also led a Literacy Program at YWCA Madison. Additionally, by offering to mentor and provide internship opportunities, Amber serves as an excellent role model for current Dominican students interested in pursuing a career in law.

When asked how Dominican impacted her, MaryAnne said, "Maybe it’s because it was the 70’s, and activism was a big thing, but Dominican really instilled the "I can” idea in me - the feeling that each of us is born to DO things in this world and that everybody’s “little bit” will bring forth the kingdom. I felt SENT FORTH and found a way to contribute through teaching - and it has returned blessings to me one thousand-fold."

When asked what this award meant to her, Amber said, “I was very honored to be given the 2021 Young Alum award because it meant a lot to be recognized for my contributions to the community by Dominican High School and I look forward to continuing to give back to the Dominican community and the Milwaukee community as a whole.”

Distinguished Alum of the Year: Recognizes a graduate who embodies the Dominican mission and five core values through professional, leadership, or service achievements as well as through commitment to and support of the Dominican community.

KnightWalk 2021 KnightWalk 2021

Dominican took to the streets of Whitefish Bay for our annual KnightWalk event on Friday, September 24th. Students donned their best Dominican gear as they walked the 6-mile route to raise funds for school activities. Parents donated snacks and water for the kids to enjoy upon their return to school. To celebrate reaching our $50,000 goal, students enjoyed watching Science Teacher, Marissa Riordan and Art Teacher, Jessica Janzer cut 5” of their hair; several faculty and staff members played an exciting game of egg roulette that left all of them with egg in their hair; and Communications Manager, Bryan McLoone, performed a lip-sync routine with special guests Joan Moroder, Merridith Frediani and Sarah Parlier that brought the kids to their feet! A heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of families, friends, and alumni who donated. Special thanks to our Community Sponsors; BMO Harris, Jimmy John’s, Sendik’s Food Market, The Bay Restaurant, Canopies, Mathnasium – Whitefish Bay and Palermo’s. Because of your support we were able to exceed our goal and raise $57,000. U-Knighted we walk!

Planning and preparation for Knight Vision 2.0 began in 2019. We collected excellent data for our feasibility study through one-on-one interviews, on-line surveys and focus groups. The feedback from our community, including alumni, past and present parents, staff, students and friends of Dominican was thoughtful and enthusiastic. From the feasibility study, we determined this campaign would have three main funding priorities: Academics, Athletics and Infrastructure, all of which to better enhance and highlight the exceptional Dominican experience we provide for our students. A few roadblocks, including a worldwide pandemic, delayed our kick-off of this campaign, but we officially launched Knight Vision 2.0 in June 2021.

Our fundraising goal for Knight Vision 2.0 is $5,600,000 in support of the following priorities: ACADEMICS • SCIENCE CLASSROOM RENOVATIONS AND ROBOTICS CENTER o Update the final two science classrooms to meet the 21st Century Science standards o Create a Robotics/ STEM Center for the planning and development of academic-focused competitions. o Enhance K-8 summer camp programs and opportunities. •

OUTDOOR TERRACE AND EDUCATION SPACE ON NORTH CAMPUS o Beautiful ADA accessible space to be enjoyed by students before, during and after school, as well as our entire Dominican community at various school-sponsored events.

ENDOWMENT GROWTH o Increase current fund of $1,600,000 in pursuit of our long-range endowment goal of $5,000,000 toward scholarship support of Dominican students.

ATHLETICS • ARTIFICIAL TURF FIELD ON NORTH CAMPUS o Turf field will provide year-round practice space for all outdoor sports, a varsity competition field for soccer and lacrosse, enhancement of our physical education courses and further develop Dominican’s North Shore Knights feeder athletic programs. •

CROWLEY GYMNASIUM RENOVATIONS o New flooring, ceiling, windows, lighting, bleachers, backboards, scoreboard and air conditioning.

RENOVATED AND EXPANDED FITNESS AND WELLNESS FACILITIES o Expanded weight training, cardio fitness and wellness area for students, faculty, staff and the community.

INFRASTRUCTURE • BUILDING INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS o Continued progress on roof and window replacements and tuck pointing. “For over 60 years, Dominican High School has had such a positive impact on the lives of so many young men and women. Now is the time to give back and ensure a bright future for this school we love so much.” - Bill Crowley, Faculty Emeritus Want to learn more about Knight Vision 2.0 or find out how you can help Dominican reach its fundraising goal? Board Members of The Year

2020 Board Member of the Year: Joan Feieriesen

2021 Board Member of the Year: Thomas Fehring

Because of the pandemic, we were unable to recognize our Board Member of the Year, so we celebrated twice as much at this year’s event! Joan has been an advocate of Catholic education her entire life. Throughout her professional career, Joan has used her expertise to assist Catholic organizations in the Greater Milwaukee area; developing and enhancing their respective leadership teams, creating effective strategic plans, and successfully raising monies necessary to fulfill their mission. Joan and her husband Jim became active members of the Dominican family when their daughter entered as a freshman in 1997 and well past their son’s graduation in 2005.

Serving a six-year term as a Board member for Dominican High School is a huge time commitment; Tom Fehring served in this capacity twice, for a total of 12 years! Tom and his wife Suzan joined the Dominican community in 1988 when their eldest daughter Beth ’91 entered as a freshman. They continued their volunteerism throughout their son Nick’s ’96 years and well past their youngest daughter Alicia’s ’02 Dominican experience.

Joan continues to do everything possible to help promote the importance and value of a Dominican education. As a member of Dominican’s Board of Directors for a total of 12 years, Joan was highly instrumental in our admissions efforts, leading the creation of new taglines and marketing materials to better highlight the benefits of a Dominican education. She also served on the Development committee and helped streamline the fundraising process, donor engagement and recognition. Her various areas of expertise made a significant impact on the Dominican High School of today. Of all things Joan loves and promotes about Dominican, her biggest passion has always been our theater program. Joan helped create the highly successful Dominican Theater Camp which is currently in its 17th year. During the 2005-2006 academic school year, while working full-time, Joan stepped in and served as Dominican’s Interim President alongside Tom Fehring. Additionally, Joan served as a leader of our Fine Arts Booster and earned the Sr. Duchesne Maxwell Volunteer of the Year Award in 2002. Joan has consistently answered the call when Dominican has needed her expertise and guidance, still to this day, including being a member of our Knight Vision 2.0 Capital Campaign Steering Committee. Dominican is eternally grateful for Joan’s expertise, leadership and dedication to our mission!

12

Dominican Honor Roll of Donors

Tom’s tenure on our Board of Directors was highly significant as he helped transition the leadership board from a Sinsinawa Dominican Sister governing board, to a board comprised of mostly lay leaders. Tom shared his knowledge and expertise as an engineer and COO of WE Energies, which enhanced Dominican’s oversight and direction of our facilities and maintenance, as well as the school’s budgeting and finance protocols. He led reviews on energy cost savings, evaluated our buildings for better efficiency options and also served as an advisor for various fundraising efforts which helped raise the necessary monies for capital expenditures. In 2002, Tom was awarded the Sr. Duchesne Maxwell Volunteer of the Year Award. Tom stepped in to serve as Dominican’s Interim President in 2005-2006 while working his full-time job at WE Energies. Today, Tom is enjoying retirement by spending time with Suzan, their children and grandchildren and volunteering for a variety of organizations. He is also the author of six books, all of which focus on history and technology. Still today, Tom is a huge supporter and advocate of Dominican and we are eternally grateful for the many ways he has positively impacted our school community. “Tom Fehring was the most hard-working and dedicated person I ever had the privilege to serve alongside on Dominican’s Board of Directors.” -David Porter

Endowment Gift For Michael Crowley ’60, creating a legacy that would positively impact Dominican students for generations to come was very important to him. Mike loved his years at Dominican and has stayed active in our community throughout the past 61 years, as an alum, past parent and volunteer, a consistent reunion attendee and an exceptional 8-year Board Member. When Mike officially retired after 50+ years as a successful leader in the banking industry, one of his top priorities was to create an endowment fund that would provide scholarship support for students who desire a Dominican education but need financial assistance in order to attend. In April 2021, he created the Michael T. Crowley Endowed Leadership Scholarship. This scholarship will support students entering their sophomore, junior or senior year starting with the 2022-2023 academic school year. We are grateful to Mike for his belief in and dedication to the Dominican mission and for his generous financial support. It is because of people like Mike that we can continue to provide the Catholic, college-preparatory education Dominican is known for; an education which has transformed lives and created successful, faith-filled leaders for 65 years!

DOMINICAN legacy Society

How can you give a gift that lasts forever? An organization with a strong endowment is simply more financially stable. Making a gift to Dominican’s Endowment Fund is a way to give a lasting gift that will endure. Your endowment contribution is invested to grow the principal and provides additional income for future use. Dominican typically withdraws 3-5% from its endowment to fund scholarships which means a gift in the present keeps giving in the future.

Join the Dominican Legacy Society If you’ve named Dominican in your estate plan, or you’ve discussed Dominican as a charity of choice, let us know so we can recognize you as a Dominican Legacy Society member. It’s easy to benefit Dominican through a gift to be made in the future: • Include Dominican in your will or trust as a beneficiary to receive a specific dollar amount, percentage, or residual balance of your estate. • Name Dominican as a beneficiary of retirement assets like an IRA or 401(k). • Make a gift of life insurance, including transferring ownership of a policy or naming Dominican as a beneficiary on the policy. The material presented here is not offered as legal or tax advice. For guidance or assistance, seek the services of a professional advisor. If you’d like to make a gift to Dominican, or to start a conversation on ways you can make an impact, please contact Director of Advancement, Claudia Martin: cmartin@dominicanhighschool.com or 414.332.1170 x 177

While they definitely share a love of playing volleyball for the Knights, our girls have many different interests, talents and needs. The teachers and staff took the time to get to know each one of our daughters as individuals and worked on how to bring the best out of each of them. “I give back to Dominican because of my ability to have discovered different parts of myself and I acted on those parts. In my time, I was able to excel in the theater program (which led me to my career now), have a voice in student government, implement the very first Kairos retreat, sing in the first Irish Culture Club band and record an album. Simply said, I had a wonderful experience and the teachers were great champions of that.” N’Jameh Russell-Camara ’09 Actor/Narrator/ Associate Director of Engagement and Artistic, Milwaukee Rep

“My experience here at Dominican has been amazing. I am so grateful that my parents made the decision for me to come here because Dominican has become a major part of my life. As a senior now, opportunities have presented themselves to me that I know I would not receive had I went to a different school. I am happy to be going here, and I know my Dominican community will be a blessing to me as I begin my college experience.” Parris Saffold ’22

FROM DOMINICAN’S AWARD-WINNING THEATRE DEPARTMENT... Dominican is proud to present its winter musical, Xanadu. Performances run February 18-27, 2022 Xanadu follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mount Olympus to Venice Beach, California in 1980 on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time – the first ROLLER DISCO! (Hey, it’s 1980!) But, when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation, and chaos abounds. Xanadu is a moving, electrifying tale of endless fun that will keep audiences in stitches while the original legendary, chart-topping tunes lift them out of their seats.
