FROM THE PRESIDENT In August, we will celebrate our 60th anniversary of providing a Catholic, college-preparatory, secondary education. In preparation for this publication our staff had great fun reminiscing with Mr. Crowley and many alums who have a long history with Dominican. Their recollection of stories from the past six decades served as an excellent reminder of the dedication and commitment so many have shown to Dominican and a true testament that our school has always been mission-driven and focused on our five core values of truth, compassion, justice, community and partnership.

Dominican Family, Without a doubt, this past year will be remembered as a historical time for Dominican High School. It was a year filled with exciting “first-ever” events and numerous memory-making moments for our entire community. How very proud I am to be a member of this amazing school family.

If you have not yet returned to your Dominican since the renovations were completed, please consider this a personal invitation to come back and visit! Pictures have been posted throughout the year via social media, but nothing compares to seeing it in person. It would be an honor to give you a tour. For those of us blessed to work at Dominican, it’s getting more difficult each day to remember what it looked like before construction so your reaction to the renovations will be enjoyable to watch.

This magazine highlights many additional ways in which Dominican made history this year, including shining moments in ministry and academics and many thrilling athletic and theater firsts. There is so much to be proud of and even more to be excited for in the year ahead.

I hope this magazine conveys the thriving spirit and excitement at Dominican High School.

Our community’s strength is a direct result of the commitment and dedication of so many generous people. Through the expertise and guidance of our Board of Directors, the knowledge and dedication of our faculty, and the strong partnership with past and present parents and alumni, we will continue to see Dominican flourish and prosper for the next 60 years.

Our promise is to ensure our Dominican graduates are prepared for their post-secondary education. Equally important, we will continue encouraging and challenging our graduates to follow in the footsteps of St. Dominic and Fr. Mazzuchelli and, “Set out for the places where the work is great and difficult.”

AT A GLANCE The Class of 2016 continued the tradition of Dominican graduating classes achieving academic success. The class averaged over $100,000 per student in scholarship offers from colleges and universities nationwide. This year’s graduates will continue their education at prestigious institutions like Arizona State University, Marquette University, Santa Clara University, St. John’s University, Syracuse University, University of California Santa Cruz, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Loyola University Chicago.

Representing the class as Co-Valedictorians are Caroline Enes and Lydia Haasl. Caroline, daughter of Gregory and Barbara, will continue on to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Lydia, daughter of William and Cassandra, will continue her education at Carthage College.

Dominican Theatre wows the crowd with its performances of “Proof,” “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” and “The Little Mermaid”

Proof Rakes in Awards

Dominican Theatre began the 2015-2016 school year with performances of the drama Proof – an intense, engaging play about a young woman, her father and their relationship with math and mental health.

Performances began in September for the general public and the Proof crew advanced to the State Theatre Festival where it earned several awards including: the Critics Choice Award, Senior Lydia Haasl received the Outstanding Acting Award, Director Jeff Schaetzke earned the Outstanding Director Award and the Stage Crew placed second overall in the Tech Olympics under the coaching of Bryn Van Beek ’97.

You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown!

Dominican Theatre’s fall musical brought a childhood classic to life with You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown! Featuring all of the classic songs and characters from the Charlie Brown comic strip and TV series.

The Little Mermaid Takes Renovated Auditorium Under the Sea

With the highly anticipated unveiling of the auditorium renovations coinciding with the opening of the spring musical, Dominican Theatre needed to deliver a show to remember. The Little Mermaid musical brought audiences under the sea for spectacular performances of the Disney classic. The sets and costume designs were unbelievable, only to be matched by the singing, acting and dancing. A cuttingedge pulley system was even used to mimic flying and floating underwater. Actors were secured with harnesses while four crew members simultaneously manipulated pulley wires backstage.

The Little Mermaid featured duel casts that alternated with each performance. The role of Ariel was played by Catey Dulgopolski ’16 and Amelia Schaetzke ’16, Ursula was played by Lydia Haasl ’16 and Carolyn Long ’16, Paul Budnowski ’18 played Flounder,

Oscar Eck ’18 played the role of Sebastian, Joe Frediani ’16 played Triton and Jarred Manista ’19 played the role of Prince Eric.

Not only did the fans enjoy themselves at The Little Mermaid, the critics took notice too. For the first time, Dominican entered the Tommy Awards – a state-wide musical theatre recognition program – and was nominated in 20 different categories. In the end, Dominican was proud to announce five winners: Sophomore Paul Budnowski– Outstanding Supporting Performance for Flounder, Senior Mariet Bejarano– Spirit Award, Bryn Van Beek ’97 – Outstanding Lighting Design, Nick Murel – Outstanding Scenic Design and Barbara Minter – Outstanding Costume Design.

Inspirations…to the Nines Wraps up 2016

The Theatre Department ended its year with its ninth annual Inspirations dance revue.

More than 40 Dominican students took part in the energetic dance concert that featured modern music, detailed choreography and, as always, some surprises. It was another fitting end to a fantastic year for everyone involved with Dominican Theatre.

Dominican becomes the only school in Wisconsin history to win five-straight WIAA state championships The odds were never in their favor. The Knights had just won their fourth-straight WIAA state championship and were only one more title away from making history, but it wasn’t going to be easy. Dominican lost eight seniors – four all-conference players – had a giant target on its back and 121 years of WIAA history working against it.

Dominican found its stride in the regular season, cruising to a 21-1 record with the lone blemish coming at the hands of Brown Deer. But, the way Dominican won this year was a little different than years past. It was true team basketball. Not a single player averaged more than 13 points per game, making the Knights even more difficult to stop.

“We got better every single day, because we had five or six leaders that were not going to let us fail this year,” coach Derek Berger said.

playoffs, knocking off Lake Country Lutheran, Racine Lutheran, Destiny and Howard’s Grove before advancing, again, to the WIAA state tournament.

“I guess I just got hot,” Bennett said. “When the second or third one went in and I was locked in, I knew it was going to be a good night.”

In Madison, neither Aquinas nor previously unbeaten Cameron could stop the Knights’ quest to a fifth-straight crown.

In the title game, Cameron did its best to hang with Dominican, sinking six threes in the game and only down nine points at the half. But, the Knights had a counter-punch with junior Jake Bennett who was one make away from tying a WIAA state tournament record with seven made three-pointers in the game,

The Knights held the Comets to just 17 points in the second half and secured their place in the record books with a 62-43 win.

“The whole team wanted this really badly and it shows with their dedication and their commitment to practice, to film, to study the whole entire season,” Berger said.

Dominican now stands alone with five-straight championships.

“Five in a row, we are fortunate and blessed enough to be the first ones to do that in the state of Wisconsin,” Berger said.

DOMINICAN WELCOMES THREE NEW COACHES he played college football at the University of Northern Iowa and UW-Oshkosh as a defensive back. He then coached defensive backs and running backs at UW-Oshkosh from 2004-2011 until he moved to Milwaukee. He has spent the last four years as the Defensive Coordinator at St. Francis High School, with a oneyear stint at West Allis Central High School as the Defensive Coordinator.

Basketball Gets Gosz

Jim Gosz ’81

After winning four-straight state titles as the head coach of Dominican boys basketball, Derek Berger ’98 left some massive shoes to fill when he stepped down in order to spend more time with his family. After an extensive search for the Knights’ next head coach, Jim Gosz ’81 is ready to take on the challenge. Gosz comes to Dominican with an impressive coaching resume. He spent the last 26 basketball seasons as the head coach of Rufus King High School where he accumulated a 526-104 record, seven state final appearances and four WIAA state championships.

This won’t be the first time Gosz steps onto the Dominican basketball court, though. Gosz played for the Knights during his four years at Dominican, playing for his father and Dominican Hall of Famer Don Gosz, from 1978-1981.

“Four of the greatest years of my life were in this building,” Gosz said. “I’m at the point in my career where maybe we can relive those.”

LaGrant Ready to Revive Knights Football

Quincy LaGrant was named the newest head coach of Dominican football in early 2016 and has come to accomplish two goals: win and prepare young men for education after high school. That’s because coach LaGrant is a football coach and an undergraduate recruitment coordinator for the Lubar School of Buisness at UWMilwaukee.

LaGrant has been coaching football at the college and high school level for more than 10 years. Before he began his coaching career,

Milwaukee Torrent Owner/Coach Takes Over Knights Soccer

Dominican soccer has had a steady face for eight years, but that changed when Patrick Connell ’78 announced he was stepping down last fall. Andreas Davi was named the head coach of boys soccer in early 2016. Davi has significant experience as a player and a coach. After several years of coaching and playing in Germany, Davi has coached several levels with the Bavarian Soccer Club in Andreas Davi Milwaukee and most recently founded and coached the professional soccer team, the Milwaukee Torrent, in its inaugural season in 2015.

Davi will continue to coach the Torrent and take control of a Dominican soccer program that posted a 5-12-3 record in the 2015 season, finishing fourth in the Metro Classic Conference.

SPORTS FEED Dominican Adds Boys Volleyball Boys volleyball has been added as an official WIAA fall sport offered to Dominican students beginning in the fall of 2016.

Four Dominican Athletes Named First Team All-Conference Kostas Antetokounmpo ’16 and Gacoby Jones ’18 were named first team All-Conference in basketball.

Dominican Recieves Sportsmanship Award Dominican recieved the WIAA Team Sportsmanship Award in boys basketball. The award is presented to one school and community in each of the State team tournaments and is determined by the conduct and sportsmanship displayed by athletes, coaches, cheer and support groups.

Five individuals and one team were inducted into the Dominican Athletic Hall of Fame this April For the first time in six years, the Dominican High School Athletic Hall of Fame welcomed new faces to its wall. The class of 2016 inductees featured five individuals and a team: Michael Drescher ’72, Robert Groh ’74, Katherine (Wycklendt) Kasper ’05, Mariano Luna ’92, Caitlin (Dodge) Ruhl ’05 and the 1999-2000 Girls Basketball Team.

Katherine (Wycklendt) Kasper ’05 was a foursport athlete, earning 13 varsity letters. Katie was a four-year starter in soccer earning first team All-Conference awards her sophomore, junior and senior years. During her senior year, Katie was awarded first team All-Conference in the Parkland Conference in volleyball, basketball and soccer.

Michael Drescher ’72 made his most significant impact to Dominican athletics off of the field through his unwavering support of the “Dominican Team.” Michael led the planning and fundraising efforts to establish the Doug Siewert Athletic Hall of Fame and continues to hold a pivotal role in sustaining Dominican athletics.

Mariano Luna’s ’92 two sports landed in the same season, as he played both soccer and football. Mariano was a four-year starter on the soccer team and a starter for football his junior and senior years. He was named to an AllConference team four-straight years in soccer.

In football, Mariano made the All-Conference and All-State teams his senior year as a kicker.

His senior year, Mariano also earned the Brian Piccolo award for his outstanding play in football and soccer.

Robert Groh ’74 made his name on the football field and in track & field. Robert was elected first team All-Conference in football his junior and senior years. In track & field, he became a WISAA State Champion in the discus throw and finished third in shot put his senior year earning him a spot on the All-State Team in 1974.

Caitlin (Dodge) Ruhl ’05 participated in soccer, basketball and track & field. In soccer, Caitlin earned first team All-Conference recognition her sophomore, junior and senior years. As a senior, she was named Parkland Conference Player of the Year and was selected as a member of the All-State soccer team. Caitlin scored 92 goals in her Dominican career, making her the all-time leader for goals scored in school history. In track, as a senior, she won state titles in both the 400 meter dash and the 200 meter relay earning her The Journal Sentinel Track & Field Athlete of the Year Award.

The 1999-2000 girls basketball team etched its name in Dominican history, winning the WISAA Division 2 State Championship. On its way to

State, Dominican defeated Lakeside Lutheran 62-49 and St. Mary’s Springs Academy 5250. The 2000 State Tournament was billed as “The Last Dance” as it was the final year of existence for WISAA. En route to the title, the Knights took down Heritage Christian 49-42 and cruised past Chippewa Falls McDonell 43-20 in the championship game. Dominican finished the season 19-5 and remains the only girls basketball team in school history to capture a state title.

More than 200 members of the Dominican community gathered in April to recognize these exemplary athletes. Along with the induction ceremony, the newly constructed Doug Siewert Hall of Fame on the second floor was put on full display for the first time. Those who were in attendance enjoyed speeches from each of the inductees and a special performance from recording artist Taylor Dayne.

On top of welcoming six new members to the Hall of Fame, over $37,000 was raised for the Dominican Athletic Department. The money will be put toward renovations to the weight room which will be completed by September.

Campus Ministry Rooted in prayer, living in service

Dominican’s Campus Ministry is committed to living through our five Sinsinawa Dominican values of truth, compassion, justice, community and partnership. Members of Campus Ministry lived these core values this year, using their gifts to give back to the community. Several service projects were completed with these values, and God’s will, at the forefront of the minds of Dominican’s Campus Ministry.

TRUTH VOCATION MASS

In November, Campus Ministry held a “Vocation Mass” during the lunch hour that students attended voluntarily. After Mass, several Dominican students met with Fr. Luke Strand, the Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, and explored the vocation of priesthood. This discussion gave the young men an unfiltered look into what it truly means to be a priest and help discern their call to the truth of the Gospel as priests.

COMPASSION CLEAN WATER PROJECT

One initiative of the Lenten Drive was to raise money for the Clean Water Project that went to the people of Flint, Michigan. More than 100,000 people in Flint were affected by unclean water that was unsafe to drink.

Dominican students and their families showed their compassion for the people of Flint by raising money that went toward purchasing clean water.

We had an exciting and faith-filled year in Campus Ministry at Dominican.

Returning to Dominican as Campus Minister and the varsity baseball coach after four years as a student has been a true blessing. Being able to share in God’s work with all in our community has enriched my faith and I am excited to share our year with you.

This year we recommitted ourselves to our Sinsinawa Core Values, rooted all our work in prayer and worked hard to use all our gifts and talents. The fire of the Holy Spirit has been burning brightly in the hearts of all in our community as we have lived these core values.

JUSTICE HOMICIDE PRAYER SERVICE

At the end of the Lenten season, Campus Ministry students lead the school in a prayer service honoring the lives of all those who were victims of homicides in Milwaukee this past year. Students advocated for social justice and safe ways to problem solve through stories, songs, dramatic readings, and prayer. Over 75 students helped contribute to this powerful service as they illuminated our prayer space with a light for each victim.

COMMUNITY BOOK DRIVE

As a part of its Lenten Drive, Campus Ministry held a book drive and approximately 449 books, valued at $1,347, were donated to the Next Door Foundation. Dominican students went out into the community to

read to children at the Next Door Foundation and Saint Monica’s School. Students also created personalized bookmarks and gave them to the children they read to.

PARTNERSHIP FRESHMEN RETREAT

Dominican’s entire freshmen class partnered with non-profit organizations throughout the Milwaukee Area, including: St. Hyacinth Catholic Church, St. Ann Intergenerational Care Center, House of Peace, St. Ben’s Catholic Church and Women’s Care Center.

The freshmen learned, experienced and celebrated Dominican’s Five Core Values through direct service. Wearing shirts branded “Make a Mark, Reach a Heart” the retreat had a direct impact on the community and was an opportunity for the freshmen to begin to understand the Dominican mission.

The work of this community has brought joy to the adults living with disabilities at St. Ann’s Center, home cooked meals to the patrons of St. Ben’s and clean water to the people of Flint, Michigan.

While the amount of monies raised, the sandwiches made and items donated are all remarkable, it is the prayer, the personal impact and the compassion that each person in our community has lived that has been most inspiring. From our Mass and luncheon where young men explored their vocation to the priesthood, to the innumerable thank you notes that students wrote to those who have impacted their life as a part of our Lenten prayer experience, our Dominican community has used our charism of preaching and proclaiming the Gospel.

As we celebrate the past year, we excitedly await and prepare for the year ahead. We are looking forward to the introduction of the uKNIGHTed service plan in which students will be challenged to integrate their service with everyday life and connect their ministry to their academic studies, athletic pursuits, college preparation and life beyond Dominican. Additionally, this July, eight Dominican students participated in an in-city mission trip, Reach Out, Reach In. During RORI, students served at 14 different non-profit sites throughout the city learning about Catholic Social Teaching and how they can advocate for the poor. RORI and uKNIGHTed are just the first of many new, exciting initiatives in ministry for our Dominican community in the coming years.

We are blessed and thankful for a wonderful year filled with the energy, excitement and the fire of the Spirit and eagerly await the exciting ministries ahead.

Bandettini on Cutting Edge of Neuroimaging Dominican alumnus Peter Bandettini ’84 has been on the forefront of Functional MRI research

Peter Bandettini ’84 has spent his life setting the pace, whether it was with his days as a track and cross country runner or now with his work in neuroimaging. Peter was at the forefront of the discovery of Functional MRI from its humble days at the Medical College of Wisconsin and continued with the new field as it made a massive impact on neuroscience.

It all started at Dominican High School, where Peter was a student from 1980 to 1984. At Dominican, Peter excelled in both academics and athletics. He was a member of the cross country and track & field teams.

On the cross country team, Peter shared the number one runner designation with his still very good friend Eric Gietzen ’84 but it was on the track where he achieved his greatest athletic accomplishments. He set numerous records in the 800 meter run, the mile and two mile runs. During his senior year, Peter took first place in the 800 meter and the mile at the Metro Conference Meet. These accomplishments put him in the Dominican Athletic Hall of Fame where he was inducted in 2003.

In the classroom, Peter remembers being influenced by several teachers, especially Mr. Bill Crowley, crediting Dominican’s teaching staff for kick-starting his interest in science.

is the passion the teachers convey. That’s what you remember,” Peter said. “I can barely remember the Krebs cycle and things like that, but I really remember Mr. Crowley jumping up on a counter to demonstrate potential energy and kinetic energy.

wanted to study, but knew he wanted to bridge the gap between social sciences like psychology and hard sciences where problems are figured out in a quantitative way. Peter decided on physics, graduating in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science Degree.

Peter began pursuing his Ph.D at the Medical College of Wisconsin at the Biophysics Research Institute. That is where his life began to change forever.

At MCW, Peter met a fellow graduate student Eric Wong. Eric had designed and created a specialized piece of hardware that existed in only a couple of places in the world at that time. This hardware was a small plastic tube wrapped in wire and covered in epoxy to hold the wire in place – a “gradient coil.” This gradient coil was used to work with a clinical MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanner to create images at extremely high speed and high resolution.

I remember his passion and I remember thinking, ‘Wow, he’s really excited about this field,’ and that sticks with you. I think that’s what got me going a little bit.”

After graduating from Dominican, Peter continued his education at Marquette University where he was a member of the cross country and track teams. Once in college, he wasn’t exactly sure what he

To use this gradient coil, the MRI scanner needed to be modified, which meant Peter and Eric could only begin using it after all normal use of the scanner was done for the day – after 9 p.m. Peter remembers working on the scanner, sometimes at 3 a.m., but that didn’t matter because they could both tell that they were on the verge of something big. What they began to discover was that MRI could actually detect brain activation – something never realized before.

“If your tap you fingers, your motor cortex will become active,” Peter said. “When it becomes active the blood flow rushes in and there is an increase in oxygenation in that area. No one really knew this before.”

It turns out their modified scanner was sensitive enough to detect subtle changes in the oxygenation, meaning the active parts of a brain would show up on the scanner’s imaging.

“We’ve come a long way,” Peter said. “Twenty thousand papers have been published on Functional MRI in the last 15 years. If you go to a neuroscience conference which has 30,000 people, I’d say a third of that is Functional MRI. It has become a legitimate technique. Every hospital and most researchfocused universities have a scanner and they all can perform Functional MRI.” Over 25 years later, scientists are still finding different ways to use fMRI, from determining how the brain is organized and what effects sleep and exercise have on the brain, to detecting early signs of brain disease like Alzheimer’s or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease) and disorders like bipolar disease or schizophrenia. It can be used in healthy volunteers because it’s noninvasive. Now, using fMRI, one can essentially “read” a person’s thoughts using the specific detailed patterns of activity that are revealed.

“It was pretty overwhelming,” Peter said. “I was one of the first subjects. Eric would be in the scan room and tell me to tap my fingers.

I would tap my fingers and then we were looking at the images and we clearly saw this signal go up in my motor cortex when I tapped my fingers. I was like ‘Wow, this is pretty incredible!’”

For someone who still didn’t know exactly what career path he would take, it was suddenly clear. This new method of imaging, now known as Functional MRI or fMRI, completely took over his life.

“At the time, I was actually desperately looking for a Ph.D thesis topic. Then I knew absolutely what it was going to be,” Peter said. “Between when we first realized what we had and when the first paper came out, I remember just completely losing track of everything outside of my work, like what day of the week it was. You are suddenly in this mode of total focus.”

Peter and Eric’s first “finger tapping” experiment was in September of 1991. By June of 1992, their first paper was published introducing functional MRI as a new technique for noninvasively imaging human brain activity.

In 1994, Peter finished his Ph.D. thesis: “Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Human Brain Activation using Endogenous Susceptibility Contrast.”

Peter currently holds a position at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, where he is the Director of the Functional MRI Core Facility and the Chief of the Section on Functional Imaging Methods. Peter is also the Editor-in-Chief of NeuroImage which is the field’s primary scientific journal covering research on neuroimaging.

Peter lives with his wife, Patricia, and three children and continues to be an avid runner.

Even after more than 25 years removed from his competitive running days at Marquette and Dominican, Peter still attributes his current success to the hard work ethic he gained from his early sports experience.

“What really helped my drive, more than school, was sports,” Peter said. “When you’re running a race and you are hurting like crazy, you’re pushing yourself. That’s kind of what you have to do in the real world – getting in the habit of pushing yourself really hard and then feeling good about pushing yourself after the fact. That’s more tangible in sports.”

In retrospect, Peter can appreciate how far fMRI has come since its early days at the Medical College of Wisconsin and 3 a.m. test scans. His hard work has paid off, but Peter knows none of this would have happened if he didn’t seize the opportunities with which he was presented.

“Being successful, certainly you have to work hard, but people underestimate how much you have to keep your eyes open for opportunities that come along,” Peter said. “I think that’s underrated, jumping at opportunities when you see them.”

“What’s wonderful about fMRI, it’s not like X-Ray where it has sort of peaked out in terms of the information that you can get out of it,” Peter said. “Whereas with fMRI we are still figuring out there are all these types of information that you can get out of it.”

One current challenge for fMRI is the fact that it has not been fully accepted into clinical application. At the moment, the primary clinical use of Functional MRI is for presurgical mapping. If a person has a tumor, the surgeon has to make sure they don’t cut out areas that are important for brain function. So, they map out the parts of the brain that are “essential” and then try to avoid them.

“The field is sort of reaching this limit until it becomes fully clinically applicable and widely accepted in mainstream medicine,” Peter said. “Then there will be this new surge in advancement as the industry starts to care about it.”

Kruesel Takes Bike Repair on the Road Dominican alumnus AJ Kruesel ’04 opens mobile bike repair franchise in Colorado By the time he was 13, there was no doubt that AJ Kruesel ’04 had a passion for bikes. He would go to the occasional Dominican basketball game and made sure to keep up with his school work, but the majority of his time was spent in a bike shop, and that’s exactly where he wanted to be.

AJ began his bike repair career at Grafton Ski & Cyclery. He started as a bike builder, doing general maintenance. By the time he was in high school, AJ was working at several bike shops and continued all the way through college.

In 2009, AJ moved to Colorado, mostly because he loves the outdoors and, of course, the biking is pretty good out there.

Once in Colorado, AJ became the Service Manager at Performance Bicycle in Westminster, CO before getting transferred to the Boulder, CO location to take on more responsibility. But, he always had the idea of mobile bike repair in the back of his mind.

“Any guy that has worked in the cycling industry on the retail side and enjoys the mechanic side of it, has thought ‘Why not do a mobile bike repair service,’” AJ said.

“Growing up, one of my neighbors owned a bike shop,” AJ said. “One summer, I asked them if they had any summer job openings. They said ‘yes’ and the rest is history from there.”

AJ began talks with Beeline Bikes, a mobile bike repair company in California. Beeline began in 2013 and was ready to begin opening franchises in more locations.

In January of 2016, AJ and a partner purchased a Beeline Bikes franchise in the Denver Metro Area territory.

Only half a year in, AJ and the other co-owner, are the buzz of the town servicing roughly a 30mile radius in the Denver Area.

“I think in all, it’s going better than expected,” AJ said. “It’s gone really, really well. Just getting our brand awareness out there is what is driving it.”

AJ doesn’t lose sight of the fact that his success stems from the beginning, working at bike shops in the Milwaukee area, and his Dominican education.

“There were a lot of teachers that really influenced me at Dominican and went the extra mile to make sure I was successful in my education,” he said.

As his franchise continues to take off, AJ feels at home doing what he loves for a living.

Two Long-Time Dominican Teachers Announce Retirement Susan Supanich

Susie began working at Dominican in 1992 and has been a staple in the school’s math department ever since. During her 24 years at Dominican, Susan has been a dedicated teacher and member of the Dominican community.

Susie has always been a champion of the students and has made sure that students who excelled in the classroom recieved recognition for it. She started Dominican’s “Knights in Shining Armor” awards which are Susan Supanich given out each month to Photo by Beth Manley students who stand out in various subjects. Susie also began the Academic Awards where students recieve academic letters and medals for their achievements.

One of Susie’s students, Lily Vartanian ’11, wrote this for The Marquette Educator: “Mrs. Supanich truly has inspired me and given me the confidence to want to teach what was once my own “dread” subject in school.”

Thank you Susie for your dedication to Dominican and its students! God bless you in retirement, you will be missed.

Bernie Schreiner

Bernie began working at Dominican in 1980 and has been a dedicated member of the Dominican staff for 36 years.

During his time at Dominican, Bernie has taught three levels of freshman and sophomore biology, general science, earth and space science, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, AP biology and his famous ecology class.

Bernie also gave his time to Dominican athletics, coaching all three levels of girls basketball as Bernie Schreiner Photo by Beth Manley assistant varsity coach, freshman coach, junior varsity and varsity coach for 12 years, three years as assistant baseball coach, six years of timing freshmen boys basketball games and four years as a member of the “chain gang” in football. Many, though, probably know Bernie for his voice as he has been the voice of Dominican boys basketball for the last 27 years and girls basketball for the past 23 years, announcing more than 500 games.

Dominican is grateful for Bernie’s commitment to the school, its students and its mission. Thank you Bernie for your years of service and God bless you in retirement!

Dominican Voted Top Work Place Dominican High School was named a Top Work Place by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in 2016. Dominican came in fourth in the “small company” category (149 or fewer employees) and was the only school in the top-75 small workplaces.

Dominican also took home the “Meaningfulness Award.”

The prerequisite for this award is centered around the idea that “My job makes me feel

like I am part of something meaningful.”

This is the first time that Dominican has been named a top workplace by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Top workplaces are voted on by workers in southeastern Wisconsin.

The special awards, like the “Meaningfulness Award” are chosen based on surveys by employees.

Sr. Duchesne Maxwell Award - Volunteers of the Year many of our school’s organizations and clubs throughout the past nine years.

When not working in concessions or ticketing, Bob and Julie were in the stands cheering on the Knights during Fall, Winter and Spring sports and were instrumental in organizing and facilitating more Powder Puff events than we can count!

Julie and Bob have been critical in the promotion and advancement of Dominican’s theatre program as well. Julie served as Co-President for the Fine Arts Booster Committee this year, assisting with the transition from the Little Theater to the new auditorium once the renovations were completed.

Bob and Julie devotedly co-chaired the annual auction for two years, in 2014 and 2015, bringing new ideas to the event and helping to break fundraising records.

Even when they were not officially serving in a leadership role, they worked equally hard behind the scenes. From Grandparents Day, to Teacher Appreciation, to hosting auction parties at their home, there was rarely an event where Bob and Julie were not involved.

Meet Dominican’s Alumni Manager

Lauren Cazares brings years of experience in Catholic community outreach and engagement Dominican is thrilled to welcome Lauren Cazares to the Advancement Department as the school’s Alumni Manager. Lauren comes from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee where she worked as the Donor Relations Coordinator for over two and a half years. With a strong background in relationship building and community outreach, Lauren will bring her expertise to our alumni, improving upon and establishing new alumni engagement opportunities.

Lauren earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration-Management at Carroll University and started her career as a Senior Case Manager and Recruiter at the Milwaukee Community Service Corps where she worked with young adults to provide employment, education and life skills training.

“I’m excited to be joining a community with such a strong history and even greater faith. As I become part of the Dominican family, I look forward to meeting all the wonderful individuals who make Dominican the remarkable place it is,” says Lauren.

Lauren will begin her outreach to alumni this summer and will be attending the 60th Anniversary celebration on August 12th where she hopes to meet many Dominican graduates in person. Dominican’s 2016 auction was a hit and raised a record-breaking amount for scholarship funding Dominican’s 36th Annual Auction was held on April 23rd with the school magically transformed into an enchanting Riverwalk. Thanks to our many donors and sponsors, and to the 400 attendees, “Knights Along the Riverwalk” was the most successful auction to date, netting over $295,000. The high point of the night came when Dominican senior, Mariet Bejarano, delivered a heartfelt speech and an anonymous donor’s match of $1,000 for anyone giving at the $1,000 level electrified the room, inspiring guests to donate a record-breaking $146,000 for scholarship funding.

ALUMNI UPDATES 1960s Ellen (Conforti ’68) Crowley received the Pittsford PTSA Lifetime Achievement Award for her many years of work as a Speech-Language Pathologist within the New York school district. The award is given in recognition of an individual’s commitment and dedication to Pittsford’s youth and greater community. Ellen researched and developed instructional practices for students with social cognitive weaknesses, which have been implemented throughout the Pittsford School District and neighboring districts.

1970s Feerick Funeral Home Celebrated its 120th anniversary on March 20, 2016. Feerick Funeral Home has been family-owned since first established in 1896 by William C. Feerick. Brothers Patrick ’71 and Bill Feerick, who now own and operate the funeral home, are the fourth generation of Feerick Funeral Directors. Fifth generation, Kyle Feerick ’01, is also a licensed director and pre-arrangement consultant.

Palermo’s Pizza, owned by Peter ’76, Giacomo ’79 and Angelo ’84 Fallucca, was named Milwaukee’s Best Local Food Product by OnMilwaukee.com in 2015. Palermo’s has also started a new campaign against hunger with “Mission Pizza” where Palermo’s donates pizzas to help feed the hungry.

Introducing Dominican’s Distinguished Alumni Awards As Dominican kicks off its 60th Anniversary celebration year, the school is excited to announce the inauguration of the Dominican High School Distinguished Alumni Awards. The Distinguished Alumni Awards honor graduates who exemplify our five core values of Truth, Compassion, Justice, Community and Partnership. Recognition is awarded to individuals who carry forth and support the Dominican mission through their professional, leadership and service achievements.

Dominican is now accepting nominations for the following distinctions: Distinguished Alumnus of the Year: Recognizes a graduate who embodies the Dominican mission and five core values through professional, leadership or service achievements as well as through commitment to and support of the Dominican community.

In November of 2015, alumni from the classes of 2003-2012 gathered at Brother’s in Milwaukee to catch up and benefit this year’s Auction. The event raised $500 and allowed classmates to see each other over the Thanksgiving weekend. Thank you to all who attended and especially to the 14 alumni who helped co-host the event!

Emily St. Onge ’14 received a grant from Beloit College, where she is currently majoring in Environmental Studies, to participate in a summer trip to the Galapagos Islands. Emily will be traveling to the islands this July with the Eco Volunteer UP program, where she and other volunteers will work on several sites, focusing on reforestation and organic farming.

Allazia Blockton ’15 was named Big East Freshman of the Year and to the All-Big East Second Team after averaging 18.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game as a freshman at Marquette.

Déysha Smith-Jenkins ’12 graduated from the University of Connecticut where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism and in Women’s Studies. Déysha has begun her career in San Antonio, TX as the District Media Relations Coordinator for the YMCA of Greater San Antonio. Déysha leaves UCONN as an All-American, the second fastest woman in UCONN women’s track & field history (indoor), with two conference championships and voted as the Outstanding Senior Athlete for Women’s Track & Field.

Martha Wong ’13 will complete a 10-week internship this summer in Minneapolis at Lazard Middle Market. Lazard Middle Market provides premium investment banking services to mid-sized companies.

Martha is a senior at Marquette University working toward a degree in accounting.

Dominican Campus Minister from 1992 to 2008 and leader in faith, Jane McAuliffe passed after a battle with cancer. For those who knew her, had her in class and worked with her as a colleague, they knew Jane as a profound leader in faith who always served the poor and brought energy and life to faith at Dominican. Though many current students never met Ms. McAuliffe, they have still felt her impact today as many of her ministries live on: she started “Sandwich Thursday” and made the first puzzle pieces on senior retreat.
