DESTINATION: DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Welcome to our Island!
For many, the Dominican Republic represents the ultimate dream of an exotic vacation: a paradise of sun, beaches, turquoise waters, and vibrant Caribbean energy. Even Christopher Columbus once described it as the most beautiful island in the Caribbean, naming it "La Española". Meanwhile, the island’s first inhabitants, the Taínos, proudly called it "Quisqueya," meaning "Mother of Fertile Lands".
Located in the Greater Antilles, the Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola, positioned between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. With its fascinating history, warm hospitality, and stunning natural diversity, the country stands out as one of the most unique destinations in the Caribbean.
Capital: Santo Domingo
Size: 48,442 km² (approx. the size of Switzerland)
O cial Language: Spanish
Population: Approx. 11 million

Traditions & Culture
Music & Dance: Music is an essential part of Dominican culture. The most representative genres are merengue, salsa, and bachata. Dance is deeply rooted in the country’s history and identity.
Carnival: The Dominican Carnival is one of the most important festivities, featuring colorful parades that showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage and joyful spirit.
Family Celebrations: In rural areas, Christmas and Easter are the most significant holidays. Families gather to enjoy traditional meals, music, and well-deserved relaxation.

The Dominican Republic is home to approximately 6,000 plant species and 7,000 animal species. Among the most fascinating creatures inhabiting the island are crocodiles, giant iguanas, flamingos, humpback whales, and manatees. Travelers exploring the country will have the opportunity to admire this impressive biodiversity in its natural habitat. Additionally, the Dominican Republic is a paradise for birdwatching enthusiasts. A total of 300 bird species have been recorded, including 32 endemic species found exclusively on this island.
Landscapes
The country o ers a uniquely diverse natural environment in the Caribbean, boasting an astonishing variety of ecosystems. Its territory features lush subtropical vegetation, majestic mountain ranges with peaks exceeding 3,000 meters, canyons, arid zones, jungle waterfalls, rivers, lakes, and, of course, its iconic white-sand beaches and turquoise waters.
History & Architecture

Before Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492, the island of Hispaniola had been inhabited for thousands of years by the indigenous Taíno people. Colonization began in 1493, leading to the founding of Santo Domingo, now the capital city, which is recognized as the oldest colonial city in the New World. Since 1990, its historic district, the Colonial Zone, has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Dominican architecture reflects a fascinating cultural fusion. European colonial influences are the most prominent throughout the country. However, the Taíno people also left their mark on local architecture, using natural materials such as mahogany and guano (dried palm leaves) for constructing houses, furniture, and handicrafts. These techniques allowed their structures to blend harmoniously with the island’s natural environment.
Gastronomy
Dominican cuisine is a delicious fusion of Spanish, African, and Taíno influences. Traditional dishes are known for their rich flavors and the use of starchy ingredients. Sweet potatoes, rice, beans, bread, and plantains are among the most common accompaniments in local gastronomy.
The most widely consumed meats include chicken, pork, beef, and goat, prepared using flavorful, well-seasoned recipes. However, the sea also plays a fundamental role in Dominican cuisine. Nearly every beach o ers fresh seafood such as lobster, shrimp, squid, mussels, and freshly caught fish, served in various delicious preparations.

GOOD TO KNOW

Tourist Taxes
All taxes are included in our package prices.
The mandatory tourist tax of $10 USD has been included in airline tickets since 2018.
For local purchases, check if the "18% ITBIS" (VAT) is already included in the price or added separately by service providers.
Restaurants, bars, and hotels often charge an additional "10% Servicio Legal" (service charge) on the bill.
Medical Precautions & Hygiene

It is very important to note that tap water in the Dominican Republic is not safe for drinking. While it can generally be used for brushing teeth, we still recommend using bottled water for this purpose.
The Caribbean sun is extremely intense, so when sunbathing, you should apply sunscreen with the highest possible SPF and avoid direct sun exposure during midday hours.
Additionally, we recommend that travelers to the Dominican Republic bring: Mosquito repellent
Medication for diarrhea, fever, and minor wounds
Most public restrooms do not provide toilet paper or sometimes even running water, so it is advisable to always carry toilet paper, hand sanitizer, or wet wipes.
Electricity
The electrical voltage in the Dominican Republic is 110/120 volts AC. Any devices brought from abroad should be compatible with 110V to function properly.
Power outlets are of the American flat plug type, so bringing an adapter is essential. Power outages occur frequently and are considered quite normal in the Dominican Republic. However, most hotels are equipped with backup generators to ensure a continuous power supply.
Climate & Weather
Year-round tropical climate with ideal travel temperatures. Daytime temperatures range from 28°C in winter to 32°C in summer. In mountain regions, temperatures can drop below freezing. In the southwest, temperatures can exceed 40°C.
Water temperature remains between 24°C and 28°C year-round
Currency
The Dominican Peso (RD$) is the o cial currency used throughout the country. US dollars and euros are generally accepted only in tourist areas, but exchange rates in stores and restaurants tend to be unfavorable for the payer.
In most places, credit card payments are widely accepted, with only a few exceptions. We are happy to provide advice based on your travel itinerary.
Toll fees must always be paid in Dominican Pesos and in cash. We recommend exchanging any remaining Pesos into your home currency or US dollars before departing, as most countries do not accept Dominican Pesos for exchange.
Language
Spanish is the o cial language of the Dominican Republic. Outside tourist areas, most Dominicans only speak Spanish. In tourist zones, more locals are fluent in English and other languages.
Driving in the Dominican Republic
The minimum driving age is 18, and a valid driver’s license is required. Tra c police (AMET) conduct frequent road checks, where you must present your driver’s license.
An international driver’s permit is not required.
Roads & Tra c
The road network in the Dominican Republic is generally well-developed. While not all routes are paved, travel on the roads is still quite manageable. Keep an eye out for unmarked potholes, as they can be common. It’s important to always drive carefully and attentively.
Passing on the right is a common practice in the Dominican Republic.
Phone & Internet
The best way to stay connected is by purchasing a prepaid SIM card (tarjeta SIM prepago) from providers CLARO or ALTICE. Data packages start at 5GB for around €10. Free Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and restaurants. All travel itineraries that include the "Service Package by Dominican Expert" also include a local SIM card with internet.

GENERAL TERMS & CONDITIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL TRAVELERS
From Dominican Expert for Customers
1.Subject of the Contract
These General Terms and Conditions of Business and Travel (hereinafter "GTC") govern the relationship between DOMINICAN EXPERT and the customer. They apply even if these GTC are not explicitly referenced in individual contracts and/or bookings. Individual agreements between DOMINICAN EXPERT and the customer take precedence over these GTC.
2.
Individual Agreements Between the Parties
The individual contract specifies the services provided by DOMINICAN EXPERT, the prices, and any additional agreements made. The services provided by DOMINICAN EXPERT are determined exclusively by the individual agreement and these GTC. Information not provided by DOMINICAN EXPERT — for example, statements from service providers, tourism organizations, review platforms, etc. — does not constitute a binding obligation for DOMINICAN EXPERT.
3.
Price Increases
DOMINICAN EXPERT reserves the right to increase agreed-upon prices up to five weeks before the start of services in the following cases:
▪ Increases in transportation and accommodation costs.
▪ Introduction or increase of fees and taxes, such as entry and exit fees, national and security fees, new taxes, levies, or increases to existing ones.
▪ Currency exchange rate fluctuations.
If the total price of the booked services increases by more than 5%, the customer may cancel the contract free of charge. Any payments already made will be refunded, excluding further claims. The notice of cancellation must be received by DOMINICAN EXPERT in writing or by email within three business days during normal o ce hours (see also Section 7, "Calculation of Cancellation Deadlines").
4. Program Changes Before the Start of Services
DOMINICAN EXPERT endeavors to deliver the agreed-upon services according to the planned program. However, it cannot be ruled out that, due to objective circumstances (e.g., government measures, pandemics, environmental or natural events, force majeure, or other unforeseeable or unavoidable circumstances) or the actions of service providers, program and service changes may become necessary. DOMINICAN EXPERT will inform the customer immediately of such changes and will strive to minimize their impact. Any resulting price changes due to program and service adjustments will also be communicated to the customer. If the program or service changes fundamentally alter the overall nature of the trip, the customer has the right to cancel.
5. Program Changes During the Trip
The customer acknowledges that, despite good travel organization, program and service changes during the trip in the Dominican Republic cannot be entirely ruled out. This applies especially due to weather conditions, natural events, government measures, strikes, roadblocks, force majeure, or other unforeseeable or unavoidable circumstances.
DOMINICAN EXPERT will make every e ort to minimize the impact of such changes.
6. Payment Terms
Unless di erent payment terms are specified in the individual agreement, the o er, or the booking confirmation from DOMINICAN EXPERT, the following conditions apply: All payments must be made in the currency stated on the invoice (EUR / CHF / USD). Upon conclusion of the contract, a deposit of 20% of the total travel price per person is required from the customer. If the deposit is not made, DOMINICAN EXPERT is entitled, after setting a grace period, to withdraw from the contract.
Further payments are due on the agreed dates. The total balance must be credited to the DOMINICAN EXPERT account no later than 30 days before the first service is rendered.
Once the full payment for the trip has been received, the travel documents will be issued to the customer.
Exception:
When purchasing flights or in the case of special conditions with hotels, etc., where an (advance) payment is required immediately, the customer must pay the required (partial) amount within three business days.
The customer must simultaneously inform DOMINICAN EXPERT by email about the payment (including the invoice number) and provide a copy of the transfer receipt to the following address: info@dominicanexpert.com
If the customer’s payment does not arrive on time, DOMINICAN EXPERT will grant a short grace period. If the payment is still not received, DOMINICAN EXPERT may refuse services, consider the contract canceled, and charge the cancellation fees according to Section 7. However, DOMINICAN EXPERT also reserves the right to insist on the fulfillment of the contract. If the invoice is not paid on time, the customer automatically falls into default after the payment deadline. From that point, DOMINICAN EXPERT may charge default interest at a rate of 5%.
Bank fees charged by the customer's bank must be fully borne by the customer. DOMINICAN EXPERT will cover any fees charged by its own bank.
7. Cancellation Conditions and Processing Fees
Changes to travel dates and/or rebooking’s
of services already confirmed by DOMINICAN EXPERT are treated as a cancellation followed by a new registration. If a confirmed booking is canceled, DOMINICAN EXPERT will charge the following cancellation fees:
FITs (1–5 persons):
▪ From reservation up to 31 days before departure: 20%
▪ 30 to 15 days before departure: 40%

▪ 01 day before departure and no-show: 100%

If no other cancellation conditions are outlined in the individual agreement, o er, or booking confirmation, the above-mentioned FIT cancellation conditions apply. The cancellation conditions outlined above refer to package services.
Individual services (such as hotel-only or transfer-only bookings) are subject to separate cancellation conditions, which are stated individually in the o er and booking confirmation.
In individual cases, higher cancellation fees of up to 100% of the travel price may apply if the corresponding expenses can be concretely proven.
The customer is responsible for covering any costs already incurred by DOMINICAN EXPERT that cannot be refunded.
Flight, Train, and Bus Tickets:
Already issued flight, train, and bus tickets are subject to a cancellation fee of 100%. Name changes are not permitted.
Calculation of Cancellation Deadlines:
The cancellation of a service must be communicated to DOMINICAN EXPERT by email.
Cancellation deadlines are calculated based on the time the cancellation notice is received by DOMINICAN EXPERT.
If the cancellation notice is received outside normal o ce hours (O ce hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (UTC -4)), or on Saturdays, Sundays, or public holidays (Germany), the next business day will be considered the time of receipt.
8. Changes & Rebooking’s
Until the start of the aforementioned cancellation deadlines, DOMINICAN EXPERT charges a processing fee of USD 100.00 per person, with a maximum of USD 200.00 per booking, for cancellations and changes (such as name changes, travel date changes, accommodation rebooking’s).
Additional telephone, fax, and email
expenses may also apply.
Requests for rebooking’s made by the customer after the 45th day before the start of travel can only be fulfilled, if at all possible, by first cancelling the travel contract under the conditions mentioned above and then rebooking.
Until the start of the trip, the traveler may request that a third party assume their rights and obligations under the travel contract.
DOMINICAN EXPERT may refuse the substitution if the third party does not meet the specific travel requirements or if legal regulations or o cial orders oppose their participation.
If a third party enters the contract, both the third party and the original traveler are jointly and severally liable to DOMINICAN EXPERT for the travel price and any additional costs arising from the third party's entry.
9. Baggage
The transport vehicles used can only carry a limited amount of baggage.
On group tours and transfers, customers are entitled to free transport of the following items:

DOMINICAN EXPERT is not liable for loss, theft, or damage to baggage during the trip. We recommend that travelers are always present when their baggage is being handled.
For transportation of baggage by air or sea, the specific conditions of the respective transport companies apply, as stated in the passenger ticket.
In the event of loss or damage, we recommend filing an immediate complaint with the responsible transport company (e.g., the airline).
DOMINICAN EXPERT assists in cases of baggage loss but cannot retrieve lost baggage at the airport on behalf of the traveler.
Travelers should wait for the airline to deliver the lost baggage to their hotel or accommodation, or they must retrieve it themselves at the airport.
Any costs incurred (e.g., taxi to and from the airport) are to be borne by the travelers.
10. Complaint Management
Customers should send complaints to their respective DOMINICAN EXPERT account manager.

11.2. Liability of DOMINICAN EXPERT under the travel contract for damages that are not bodily injuries is limited to three times the travel price, provided the damage was not caused intentionally or through gross negligence, or DOMINICAN EXPERT is responsible solely due to the fault of a service provider.
11.3. For damage claims arising from tort that are not based on intent or gross negligence, DOMINICAN EXPERT's liability is also limited to three times the travel price.
11.4. DOMINICAN EXPERT is not liable for services that travelers book and use directly at their destination (e.g., exhibitions, events, concert visits, etc.). In these cases, the terms and conditions of the respective organizer apply.
11.5. Where individual services in the travel description and booking confirmation are explicitly designated as third-party services, DOMINICAN EXPERT is only liable for the proper arrangement of such services, not for the services themselves. This also applies to arranged flights.
DOMINICAN EXPERT’s liability for vicarious agents is limited to their own liability in both scope and amount.
12. Forfeiture and Limitation Period
Travel-related claims, except those arising from unlawful acts, must be asserted by the customer within one month after the contractually scheduled end of the trip. After this deadline, claims can only be asserted if the customer was prevented from meeting the deadline through no fault of their own.
Customer claims from the travel contract, except for claims arising from unlawful acts, expire one year after the contractually scheduled end of the trip.
This also applies especially to claims arising from the breach of pre-contractual and post-contractual obligations and ancillary obligations of the travel contract. Claims arising from unlawful acts are subject to the statutory limitation period. If negotiations about the asserted claims or circumstances forming the basis of the claim are pending between the customer and DOMINICAN EXPERT, the limitation period is suspended until one party refuses to continue negotiations.
The limitation will not commence earlier than three months after the end of the suspension.
