“FUSION LIVING”

The key idea behind the “FUSION LIVING” was to create a place that caters for the ever-evolving nature of home living as … “the threshold between the home, place of work and transitory spaces is fading…”

(Soft Dimensions, Volume #33 Inara Nevskaya). “FUSION LIVING” takes your traditional Victorian terraced house and transforms the spaces into ones that accommodate all types of diverse households, fit for young and old families and university students.

Second Floor

Using the subtraction technique splice and the addition technique parasite on the original terraced plans resulted in a unique shape of the plan. It opened the possibility for voids fitted with rich gardens, resulting in the sense of openness and fluidity. The placement of large open windows and multiple voids successfully brings the outside in, allowing for lots of natural light.

Hybrid House - Case Study

“MORIYAMA’S BRICK HOUSE”

Moriyama’s Brick House brings together unique elements from Caruso St John’s Brick House and Nishizawa’s Moriyama House. To successfully hybridise these two contrasting buildings, it was essential to detect both the similarities and unique qualities to ultimately establish the critical characteristics of the hybrid house. Both buildings strongly emphasise nature and the notion of inviting the outside in; this became a prominent feature within the hybrid house, resulting in a large open layout with passageways and gardens that connect each building, ultimately pushing us to become more in tune with the natural environment.

Large glass windows and open courtyards create a sense of openness and fluidity between each building. The hybrid house was designed on the irregular horse head shaped site plan of the Brick House, which led to a unique arrangement of the buildings. Overall, the hybrid house successfully fuses private with communal living while also invoking natural elements which create a welcoming environment.

The hybrid house draws upon the communal aspect of the Moriyama house through shared domestic and living spaces while also incorporating private buildings. This heavily communicates the importance of engaging in a more profound sense of community and relationship. The majority of the aesthetics of the hybrid house are highly influenced by Moriyama’s white cuboid buildings, with a fusion of brick and white concrete for the facades.

Student Housing Project

“GOODS LINE LIVING”

Goods Line Living prioritises well designed communal spaces and access to optimal sunlight, with a smaller north tower containing single studio units, and a taller tower containing multi-bedroom apartments on the southern side of the site. Through this lens, we have prioritised the living conditions, going further than the SEPP (state environmental planning policy) in order to tailor to the domestic patterns of contemporary students.

Ground Floor - Eat Street Goods Line Living uses textured concrete panels juxtaposed with soft, curved edges to create a cohesive facade. The presence of vegetation is crucial, as the site is in the middle of a bustling city and is surrounded by a built landscape. Vegetation has been used along with a spiral staircase as a way to call upon students as well as the public up towards our eat street, elevated park and other public amenities

The student today is a social one, motivated by their friends and family to enjoy their study and social life, both outside and inside of university. This need for socialisation has become evident within the pandemic. For this reason we have decided to focus on facilitating interactions between the students. For the studio apartments, two or three students share a living space, kitchen and dining room, with each student having their own bedroom, bathroom and study space. This small adaptation means that students are more likely to interact with each other.

The many communal and public spaces also facilitate these interactions, with an open study space, and a yoga studio just for the students. By composing these spaces, we begin to cater to the need for social interaction.

Thermal Comfort and Environmental Control

“SUSTAINABLE HOUSE”

This project challenged us to create a sustainable “green” house that allowed for effective passive heating and cooling and provided thermal comfort to occupants.

Some notable interventions are the “butterfly” shape roof, which is effective for installing solar panels and provides optimal shading and protection from direct sunlight. Operable angled skylights allow the winter sun to penetrate south-facing bedrooms while blocking the harsh summer sun. The skylight also improves ventilation in these rooms as the window can be opened or closed. The central courtyard warms up the thermal mass (concrete slab) during the day. The residence can rely on a passive heating system to keep warm during winter days and nights. The pavilion and the vegetation that hangs from it act as partial shading from the summer sun

Iconic Houses and the Architectural Model

“ROSE SEIDLER HOUSE” We were asked to choose an iconic house to model for this summer elective. I chose the Rose Seidler house, an interesting residence located in Sydney, built in 1950 by Harry Seidler.

The house is most notable for its panoramic views, careful separation of sleeping and living areas through a central terrace and how it addresses the landscape.

“EDMONDSON PARK PUBLIC SCHOOL”

Edmondson Park is a south-western suburb, part of the South West Growth Area, and is currently experiencing a massive boom in new infrastructure, including a new railway station (2015), a shopping precinct with eat street (Ed Square) and residential apartments. There is currently a lack of available public education in the area. This project demonstrates the idea of the school at multiple scales, from covered outdoor learning areas to understanding the relationships within a master plan.

STUDIO 6: CAPSTONE - SOCIAL CONDENSER

“ULTIMO POWERHOUSE MUSEUM” We propose that MAAS become a support and shelter hub for homeless people, whilst rejecting the social hierarchy that homelessness holds.

The location of the MAAS creates an opportunity to break down these social hierarchies, as it sits in the middle of the CBD. The powerhouse museum acts as an anchor point between two environments, with white-collar workers to the east, and residential buildings including private, student and social housing to the west. We aim to create a space which provides a sense of comfort to those using the facilities. This includes characteristics such as low visibility into the space, low noise levels, shelter from rain and wind, and privacy, acting as a continuation of the informal attributes of the goods line that many homeless people live in. In 2016, approximately 38,000 people in NSW were homeless, with 13% of these people living within the City of Sydney. Before covid, 505 homeless people were in a form of temporary housing. This number has significantly decreased to 269 as of 2022, meaning fewer homeless people have a safe, warm place to sleep, and fewer homeless people are receiving help. This results in difficulty finding a source of income and being ostracised from those with homes and jobs.
