The power of positive thinking. I must admit, at times I’ve been a sceptic. But it’s hard to argue against its virtues when you look at one of its fiercest proponents – our cover star, food writer and presenter Alice Zaslavsky. I first met Alice seven years ago when she was the food editor of this magazine (then called The Weekly Review). Her enthusiasm and sheer pep were infectious. Cut to today, and that sunny outlook (and a bit of tenacity) has seen her achieving huge success – including writing two highly praised cookbooks. We spoke to her about her newest book and her unwavering zeal for life. ●

Positively stylish

hen Deanne Jolly’s 14-year marriage to former AFL player Darren Jolly ended in 2019, the interior designer went into retreat. The break-up of the former contestants on The Block was covered widely in the media, leading Jolly to reassess the meaning and direction of her whole life. But, akin to a phoenix rising from the ashes, the interior designer is grateful to have come out the other side stronger and happier. “I think when you go through tough times, it definitely helps you figure out what matters to you, what your values are, who you are as a person,” Jolly says.

“I’ve learnt a lot about myself and so I see lots of silver linings and positive things out of it.” She says though the past few years have been hard for her, with the divorce – not to mention dealing with the challenges of COVID while parenting daughters Scarlett, 16, and Lily, 14 – the support and love of her girls has helped her find her way back to happiness. “They’re very supportive of me as a person and they just love seeing me out there living my best life and feeling passionate about what I’m doing,” Jolly says. “My oldest daughter has said that she finds it inspiring to see me out there creating a new life for myself and on my own terms.

“I was certainly wanting to show my girls that we all have different iterations or chapters in our lives. When one chapter ends that doesn’t mean that your life is over. It’s exciting. It means that you get to start something new and really figure out what you want it to look like, and they’ve definitely bought into that whole thing.” Since her marriage breakdown, Jolly has also made a foray into the real estate industry, something she says has been a long time coming. “I feel like everything that I’ve done in my life up to this point has been an evolution that has led me to this. I’ve done The Block, I’ve got my interior design business, but prior to all of that I had a national sales manager role,” she says. “Making friends with people, building relationships with people, and talking about houses all day does not feel like work to me. It also felt like a good way for me to be providing for my kids.” Jolly studied real estate during the 2020 lockdowns and qualified as an agent in March last year. Further lockdowns and restrictions in 2021 meant she didn’t pick up listings until this year. “The real estate industry was not really able to work through COVID. So, I pretty much hit the ground running as soon as we opened up in January and it’s been pretty quick, actually, for somebody who’s new to the industry,” she says. Jolly says she brings a unique skill set to her role at Hawthorn East agency Bekdon Richards, having designed and developed many of her own projects and advised others through her interior design business, Muster Studio, of which she remains creative director. “I’m able to help vendors maximise the potential in their property, to get it to the level that they want to get it to and the result that they want to get,” she says. “And I spend a lot of time talking to people about what they could do if they purchase a house.” Surviving some dark moments has emboldened Jolly to reach outside her comfort zone and beyond. “I fully believe that we’re given challenges because of those things that we need to learn, and I think that’s what’s happened for me. “I’ve taken that with both hands and run with it and instead of being negative or feeling upset or angry or blaming or any of that, I have completely gone in the other direction and embraced it.” ●

RMS Titanic is the subject of its opening lines. “The episode opens with the Morse code and family members are informed that a member may have gone down on the Titanic,” he says. “They refer to the Astors and the Guggenheims – famous people who perished on that ship. “I also saw it performed on Broadway and was certainly curious about how they could make a musical out of a disaster.”

ne of Australia’s biggest musical theatre stars, Anthony Warlow admits he’s only ever had to audition four times in his career, and only made his Broadway debut at the age of 50 in the Annie revival. At 60, he’s ready to step into the role of Captain E.J. Smith in Titanic the Musical: In Concert, lured by the fact they are of similar age. “Having just turned 60, I saw this as an opportunity to play a real-life man and put my own gravitas into this role, because I am that age and have lived experiences,” says Warlow who started his career as a 19-yearold with Opera Australia. “It’s a pivotal role because E.J. Smith is the captain of the Titanic, and from what I have tried to glean, he was regarded highly in the industry and well respected and had mastered sailing the White Star Line ships,” Warlow says. “Smith was like a father figure, and there is a calmness about him. “You have two egos on this ship, the CEO Bruce Ismay and Smith – one who is the master of the ship and one who thinks he is the master of the universe. I look forward to battling it out with Ismay.” Warlow first heard about the Titanic as a child, and was ever intrigued by the mystery that surrounded its sinking in 1912, and later became more curious when he saw the first episode of the TV series Downton Abbey, in which the

For someone who turns down more work than he commits to, Warlow admits it all comes down to knowing what to say yes to. “There have been moments in the past 10 years when I have seen more scripts and opportunities come my way with a phone call,” he says. “I appreciate the nerves and anxiety that come with auditioning but I haven’t had to do it much.” With the job offers comes the extra load of working out what will fulfil his creative desires. “I have been fortunate to be offered work, and at the same time there is a side of me that has to be more critical of what I choose,” he says. “It’s the discerning Anthony I need to focus on. I question whether I really want

to do the role and if it will further me as an artist and person. “I have turned down things because of that. Everything I do has to challenge me. “I describe myself as a cover artist and every time I get on stage, I have to put my stamp on it. I am a history nut and research freak and I like to know what blood courses through a character’s veins. “That makes the work on stage tremendously easier for me. What I also love about this role is that it’s not a leading role – it’s an ensemble cast and that appealed to me too.” ● TITANIC THE MUSICAL: IN CONCERT \ November 4-6, Melbourne Town Hall.

A love of food and a

zest for life COVER STORY Author and presenter Alice Zaslavsky is making

the world her oyster, one recipe at a time.

ince food personality Alice Zaslavsky – also known as Alice in Frames – has been in charge of choosing the eatery for this interview, I head through the doors of what looks like the beautiful restaurant on the street where we’ve arranged to meet. No Alice. It turns out that one should not presume to know what a foodie really likes, since her chosen cafe does not have the pretty wrought-iron exterior or the complicated menu of the other spot. Rather, Zaslavsky’s favourite has an easygoing, unpretentious, buzzy vibe – much like the writerbroadcaster herself. She’s so approachable that I’m not surprised when she says people come up to her all the time – not because they recognise her from her MasterChef TV contestant days or when she interviewed Nigella Lawson (who called her “a force of nature”) on stage, but rather because they think they went to school with her. Recently, when someone realised it was her at the airport, they exclaimed, “I love you!” Zaslavsky’s response? “‘The feeling is mutual!’ Because I genuinely do love connecting with people.” Right now, that’s literally what she is doing – thanks to one new cookbook on the shelves (The Joy of Better Cooking Cooking) and another being newly released in North America ((In In Praise of Veg Veg). ). Each book bursts with colour and personality, with accessibility being the key to the recipes. The Joy of Better Cooking came about “because people often said to me, ‘I wouldn’t consider myself a good cook.’ It’s like, why? What are the limiting beliefs that you’ve set on yourself? So, the book [aims] to fill in whatever gaps there are in your knowledge and experience,” Zaslavsky explains. Easy-peasy recipes – such as the wet-fry mushroom noodles – come with comprehensive

instructions (“plonk all of the mushrooms into your wok”), plus plenty of extra notes and photos to guide the way. Zaslavsky was immersed in food culture at a young age: She emigrated at the age of six with her parents and brother to Australia from her birthplace of Georgia (then part of the Soviet Union), a country that was “on the crossroads of Russia, Asia and Turkey, [so] it was very much on the spice trail, with that East and West influence”. Another influence came early on because by moving to Australia, she learnt first-hand how important language is, setting her up for a career that includes a lot of writing. “If you’re a natural communicator, then to have that taken away from you is something you feel so deeply,” she says. Being bilingual would provide an advantage: “I break down English words in my head, to their suffixes and prefixes and roots. It makes it really playful.” When she wasn’t in the school library learning how to speak English, food became the way she connected to other Aussie kids. “I would get extra snacks at the supermarket to befriend people through my play lunch. I always saw it as a connector. I’m a very gregarious person who likes to make friends, so with the language taken away, it was like, ‘how else can I connect?’ So, I would pick the most appealing foods to my friends, buying Dunkaroos and Nutella dip.” When Zaslavsky started teaching, she found herself gravitating to food as part of an inventive approach to the classroom. Several people suggested she audition for MasterChef ’s fourth season, and as a natural performer – in year 12, she topped the state in drama, receiving a premier’s award – it was a nobrainer. She might not have known where it would lead, but she is not someone who thinks small. R AC H E L L E U N R E I C H ●

“I’m a really strong believer in the power of manifestation and asking for what you want – not in a ‘woo-woo’ way, but in a ‘write it down and move towards doing the things you need to do’ way. A lot of people say they want to do something, but very few people actually go ahead and do it,” she says. It’s a lesson she has learnt from her parents, both academics who came to Australia using a loan. “My mum wrote her PhD with my brother on her lap. So, while [my parents] never sat me down and said, ‘Alice – the world is your oyster’, they showed it to me in so many different ways. They taught me that you only get one life, and you’ve got to grasp it.” Work is a family affair since Zaslavsky’s husband, Nick, manages Phenomenom, a food education program that she created. Their daughter Hazel, who is three and a half “and like two and a half kids”, can converse with her mother in Russian. ( Praise of Veg is dedicated to “the nut”, but that’s (In a reference to Hazel, not the food.) On top of that load, Zaslavsky has another belt notch, hosting ABC Radio Melbourne’s Saturday Breakfast program, not to mention other radio and TV stints. “I’ve always been extremely high energy,” she says as she explains that when she can’t sleep, she catches up on her international work in a different time zone. If there is a key to her success, it is not just her aptitude but her attitude. “Sometimes opportunities pass me by, and then I realise that that door wasn’t mine to go through. And that there’s something else around the corner,” she says. She’s one step up from a glass-half-full person – “I see it as full: half water, half air and that’s just the way I am. And part of the reason why I have been able to persevere is because I choose not to believe that there are things standing in my way. If there’s something in my way, I just go a different way.” ●
