““I am Emma Jane Leah” … and I make perfumes As a scent designer, my main business is taking an idea and creating a scent to match. It’s quite a process, because it’s very difficult for people to describe what they want. I have to decode all kinds of words, ideas and imagery before I can say, “OK, that smells like this”. I’ve been interested in scent since childhood. I always had my nose in something, whether it was the spice jars in the kitchen, the herb garden out the back, or the roses. I have a sensitive nose. I’m forever saying, “What’s that smell? Do you smell something? Something smells weird. Is that gas?” Or, “Oh my god, I have to move because of that smell”. I’m that person. I began with aromatherapy, but aromatherapy has a limited palate, so I started exploring. My path has included skincare, cosmetics, scent application, scent and psychology, chemistry and biology. My own perfumery was the obvious next move. My analogy is low-waisted jeans. They don’t suit everybody, so do you get a different pair made, or just not wear jeans until high-waisted ones are back in fashion? Fragrance is so many things: it’s a memory connector, it’s intimate, it’s an expression of the self and it brings joy. But if you can’t get what suits you, what do you do? My response was to set up my own perfumery. I thought, “How hard could it be?” Famous last words. Perfumery schools don’t really teach traditional methods anymore. They teach commercial, industrial perfumery, which isn’t a bad thing, but it’s all about what’s on the market currently. I never wanted to do that, so I’m self-taught. Memory connection and cross-sensory experience are influencing perfumery now. It makes sense, because scent anchors memory in your brain. I’ve got so many favourite smells and combinations. I love the smell of the ocean, which sounds really cliched, but it’s just so fresh and invigorating. A lot of it is associative, too. Experience overlaid with scent should never be underestimated. I mean, I like the smell of Bangkok and we all know that it doesn’t smell that great, but it’s exciting and you know that you’re there. n 1997, actor Rodger Corser had what he calls an old-fashioned, sliding-doors moment. Now 45, Corser was working at Melbourne’s Crown Casino in the audiovisual department, contracted to Steve Vizard’s Artist Services company. His job was to do anything and everything, including following Crown’s character Mr Pokie around, filming excited punters when a car was won or a huge jackpot went off. He was also fronting a number of pub and original bands, playing all over Melbourne including on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy, and King Street in the city. “I used to sneak out on the overnight shifts – sorry Steve,” he says. “I was playing in bands and if I had a gig on, I would literally take my pair of trousers and my shirt off, and take off and take the mobile phone with me.” After doing a media studies degree at Deakin University’s Rusden campus, Corser initially

Rather than studying his craft at NIDA or WAAPA, as many Australian actors do, Corser learnt on the job. “I literally did my apprenticeship on screen,” he says. “I avoid watching myself from those early days, as that’s how I learnt. I was bad and you make lots of mistakes.” Twenty years since the groundbreaking musical, Corser is one of Australia’s most recognised and popular actors. He’s had lead roles on Underbelly, McLeod’s Daughters, Water Rats and Rush, and most recently, as Dr Hugh Knight in Channel 9’s Doctor Doctor Doctor. Series three of Doctor Doctor has just finished filming in the NSW town of Mudgee, and is now on air – the show is by far the most watched drama on Australian television. This season, Doctor Doctor is reaching a national average audience of 1.2 million. The role – and the cast – is an actor’s dream come true, according to Corser. “When we go to Mudgee we are away from our

“I think they tried to ask me for ID, but I walked into the pub with a guitar, so they let me in.” Whenever he comes back to Melbourne, and perhaps whenever he drives up and down King Street, Corser is reminded of Underbelly. He played Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Owen, the cop trying to bring down gangland identity Carl Williams in 2008’s successful Channel 9 series. Hanging out in the band and club scene in King Street in the late 1990s, it was inevitable Corser knew some of the characters the series was about. But just exactly who those characters are, he is keeping to himself. “I had met a couple of those guys but I didn’t know what they did back then,” Corser says. “I went to Sydney in the early 2000s when it was all happening. When I came back to film Underbelly, I bumped into some of the guys who I knew back in the day. “We all thought it was very ironic that I was playing a copper as well.”

have been in another industry; it would have been very different.” RODGER CORSER ON HIS EARLY CAREER thought a career behind the camera was where he would end up. Then while working at the casino, he attended an open casting call for the musical Rent, at the insistence of one of his colleagues, which was being held at the Prince of Wales in St Kilda. “They didn’t want the usual suspects,” Corser says. “I definitely wasn’t perfect, I think that they auditioned me about eight times to make sure I was right. “I ended up getting the role and I think that was very, very lucky. If it wasn’t for that show I could have been in another industry; it would have been very different. It was a real sliding-doors moment.” The American producers saw something special in Corser that day, and he has never looked back. Rent was more than just a musical for Corser. He formed a relationship with singer Christine Anu, who was also starring in the show; they have a daughter, Zipporah, 15. He is now married to Renae Berry and living in Sydney; they have three children – Budd, 8, Cilla, 6, and Dustin, three.

families for 10 days, so we are in the pub every night having dinner,” he says. “Everyone talks work, debriefs, has a few wines and then we get to know about everyone’s lives and families. It’s a really warm set, it’s a bit like being on school camp for the cast. We get really close, really quickly.” We are catching up for this interview over a coffee in Melbourne; three days earlier, the 2018 Gold Logie nominee played in his first Australian Rules grand final, winning the flag with Sydney’s St George in the masters competition. Afterwards, he sat on the hill with his family and teammates and had some beers; a great moment, Corser recalls. “It was awesome, and I kicked a couple of goals.” Growing up in Melbourne, Corser went to East Doncaster High and played cricket at a high level until he was 25. He has a strong connection to the East Doncaster area; it was only last year that his family home was sold. He played his first gig in a band in a Melbourne pub when he was underage.

The US may beckon for the Corser family; he once had a holding deal with the powerful American television network, ABC. They literally paid him to do nothing, while they searched for the perfect role. He nearly took part in an American pilot version of Offspring Offspring, but the timing wasn’t right. Now his kids are a bit older, he is open to going to the US pilot season in February next year with his family, and seeing what happens. In the meantime, his next local role is in the ABC series Glitch, for which he has to lose up to eight kilos. And now that the third series of Doctor Doctor has been filmed, Corser will return for a while to being a family man, which he loves. “It’s definitely my turn. My wife is studying kinesiology and some other therapies, and she has been juggling the kids and that while I’ve been away. “I’ll get back into the trenches so to speak and start making the school lunches and taking them to swimming, so Renae can do her studies. “I’ve got to catch up on some of the school dropoff and pick-ups.” ●

hey are the September specialists. Leading AFL commentators Bruce McAvaney, Anthony Hudson and Stephen Quartermain have called nearly 50 grand finals between them and provided memorable soundtracks to some of the game’s biggest moments. The trio are gearing up for another finals series with McAvaney leading Channel Seven’s coverage, Hudson spearheading for Fox Footy and Quartermain calling the action on AFL Nation radio. McAvaney called his first grand final on television in 1991, and on the eve of his 18th decider, tells Domain Review he still gets nervous. “I still get a combination of excitement and anxiety. ‘Have I done enough? Am I well prepared? I hope I call well’,” McAvaney says. “You put pressure on yourself to perform. There’s an anxiety with me and the only time it actually leaves is when my headphones are on and I’m calling. I feel relaxed then. “I’m still excited every time I go to a match to call it. That’s never left me, I don’t think it ever does.” Every AFL grand final is a unique tale. “Each has a great story, fantastic outcome for the winner, harrowing loss for the loser, stakes are high and that’s what grand finals are all about. Some games are close finishes and incredibly exciting, some are won half-way through the third quarter but just as important in terms of the story.” McAvaney’s preparation is meticulous. His formula draws on history, form and stats, is added to by Seven Sport statistician Josh Kay, then handwritten. He likens himself to an octopus and every tentacle hold a vital piece of information. “I have my own system,’’ he explains. ‘‘It’s a combination of being well organised, having everything at your fingertips but not forgetting there’s a match taking place. And when it comes to finals you do a bit extra.” McAvaney has a September dream of his own and it involves two traditional rivals, Richmond and Collingwood, meeting on that last Saturday. “I reckon we’re due for an inner-Melbourne, big club grand final. The excitement in Melbourne would be unbelievable.” If Quartermain had a dollar for every time someone recited his own line to him, he’d be rich. In the dying seconds of the 2005 grand final, West

Leo Barry, you star!” Quartermain says: “You’ll walk down the street and someone will yell out of a car, ‘Leo Barry, you star!’ It’s fantastic. I’m just glad I didn’t stuff it up. “It’s not a term I’d ever used or have used after, it just came out of my mouth. It was so tense, we didn’t have the countdown clock so I had no idea how long there was to go. I’m just glad I did the moment justice.” Quartermain began calling on radio in 1995 then was part of a memorable run of grand finals when Channel Ten netted broadcasting rights in 2002.

“There’d been a string of blow-outs then – as soon as Ten took over they became close, we had a string of them decided in the last five minutes,’’ he says. “Sydney and West Coast had an amazing rivalry, they were brutal, dour affairs but gripping to watch and call.” A passionate Hawthorn supporter, the 56-yearold hasn’t called a Hawks final. He stepped away from the commentary box while presenting Ten News, missing the 2013-15 trifecta, while the 2008 triumph was the first year Channel Seven broadcasted the match as part of its rotation with Ten. A moving outback memoir LAST MONTH

here’s always a degree of scepticism when picking up the memoirs of somebody who has barely turned 30, but Rick Morton’s life has been anything but ordinary. One Hundred Years of Dirt tells the sad and often brutal story of Morton’s upbringing in the Queensland outback, followed by years in abject urban poverty. Morton’s grandfather, George Morton, owned a cattle station the size of Belgium and was a “total bastard” of a man. He abused his seven kids, particularly Morton’s father Rodney, who, in turn, inflicted tremendous pain on his family. “Ours is a trauma passed on from one generation to another,” laments Morton as he chronicles in appalling detail the breakdown of his parents’ marriage; a horrific accident that nearly killed his brother Toby, who later became a drug addict; and his grim teenage years in a housing commission property with his long-suffering but loving mum, Deb. Morton opens up about his own drug abuse and the mental health problems that triggered suicide attempts. He writes movingly about the stress of coming out as gay and his fear of family rejection. Morton, a journalist with The Australian, buttresses his story with studies into the effect of poverty on the brain, and how low-income families are more prone to dysfunction and violence. He rails against media elites who pretend to understand the plight of poorer Australians. The sadness of the book is leavened by plenty of lighter moments: the opening chapter on a pig hunting is comedy gold, as is Morton finding his way as a young journalist on the Gold Coast. It is a truly rewarding read. ●

he counts Nick Cave as a close friend, has photographed Queen Elizabeth and Cate Blanchett and is married to Australian filmmaker John Hillcoat, who is best known for his film The Proposition. For all her black book highfives, Polly Borland is a force in her own right, and now, in a career first, the NGV will honour the Australian artist with a retrospective, Polyverse. Borland, 59, left Melbourne in 1989 for London. She quit her job as a freelance fashion photographer for Vogue Australia to try her luck. She never looked back. However, she does have fond memories of St Kilda’s Crystal Ballroom, flirting on the sidelines of this burgeoning art-rock scene where Nick Cave, INXS and Iggy Pop once played. It’s here she met Cave and photographer Peter Milne, whose images capture the Blank Generation of misfit musicians and artists all on a creative sabbatical. “I hung out at the Crystal Ballroom and saw lots of bands there but I wasn’t right in the thick of the scene, I was more an affiliate on the outside,” says Borland, who lives in Los Angeles with Hillcoat and their son, Louie. The decision to leave Melbourne was inspired by her partner’s offer to show his film at the London and Venice Film festivals. It was a make-or-break moment and they happily departed – that was until Borland did a second take after arriving at a Kennington squat as their first port of call. It has been close to 30 years since she has called Australia home, but Borland visits regularly because her sisters still reside here. “I was frustrated creatively and I didn’t feel I would be appreciated in Australia, that’s sort of why I left,” she says. “Many creative people I knew were also heading to London. It was the thing to do. Everyone idolised the British magazines like The Face and the music

I guess it was somewhere far away that seemed like a great place to make your mark.” Borland began taking portraits for Newsweek, The New Yorker Yorker, The New York Times and Dazed & Confused. She photographed album covers for Goldfrapp and allowed Cave to use her images for the cover of his book The Death of Bunny Munro. But she quickly found a niche as an artist whose work contested notions of the feminine and the masculine. She touched on the surreal, fantastical and abstract, too. There’s a dark and dangerous side to her work that’s sometimes gloomy, awkwardly confrontational, but romance skirts the edges. She counts the late photographer Diane Arbus and filmmaker Pasolini as inspiration figures. In Polyverse, more than 60 works are on show from various series including Bunny [2008], in which actress Gwendoline Christie’s distorted figure subverts the idea of a Playboy bunny girl while her

Smudge series [2011] features Cave disguised in a blue wig, face stocking and red lipstick. “For the first time since the Smudge work I have a clearer idea of what I am doing,” she says. “I am really interested in the mythical, the emotional, in modernism. The newer work reflects my interest in the reduction of visual language. I feel I am finally honing this and have more control over my work than ever before.” Last year, she photographed Cave and his wife, Susie Bick, for the cover of British Vogue. Aside from footy, Blake says he has a passion for Melbourne’s bike paths. “Outside football hours, I’m a big fan of riding around the city. Me and my little boy ride around the MCG a lot because its pretty flat. Just to be able to get into the city, ride along the Yarra, especially for kids, is one of my favourite things to do,” he says. Despite his passion for Melbourne, Blake has taken a sojourn to New York for a few months with his wife, Zoe Foster Blake, and young children, Sonny and Rudy. When asked how he handles the

Blake says it was important for the storyteller to take the front seat. “The whole point of the show is it doesn’t work unless that third person understands it’s their time to shine, the floor is theirs,” he says. “The more relaxed someone is, the more excited we are to let them go, because we know the more entertaining the story, the better the show is.” It’s not unusual for people at the supermarket or on the street to tell Hamish and Andy funny anecdotes because of the show. However, they say it takes a special kind of yarn to make the cut. “To be fair to a lot of stories, and we’re guilty of doing this ourselves, the phrase ‘you had to be there’ is a phrase that applies,” Lee says. “We actually talked about that when we were choosing a name for the show. ‘True Story’ was one of them, ‘Story Time’ was another and ‘Guess You Had to Be There’ was another, then we realised that made the show sound like shit,” he says. “Yeah, we’re looking for the stories where you do have to be there,” Blake says. ●

You’d reckon he knows what he’s doing, and Bentwood is a schmick operation. Is it formulaic? Yeah, maybe, but it’s a super luxe formula and, despite Bentwood’s schmick-ness, it has a lot of soul. They’ll wax lyrical about Inglewood’s Roosevelt Blend for as long as you like, or sort you with a malted and salted caramel shake pronto. Downers: there’s no wifi, pricing is in the upper echelon, and at this stage, it’s not licenced, but there’s one in the works. Apart from these quibbles, experience and a big budget have given Bentwood a flying start as Fitzroy’s new benchmark cafe. We’ll be back to try the salmon pokecado. ●

Method ■ Combine the cream, icing sugar and vanilla paste in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. Whisk until semi-firm. ■ Lay one biscuit down on a tray and put 1 tablespoon of whipped cream on top. Put another biscuit on top of the first one and top with whipped cream. Continue to make a stack of four biscuits and cream. ■ Dollop the cream on top of the last biscuit. ■ Finish the creation with a cherry on top, then refrigerate for 1–2 hours before serving to allow the cream to soak into the biscuits. ●

The mix of shops in Elsternwick is broad, and as local store owner Peter says, “there’s no excess of anything – just something for everybody”. Peter is the owner of Green Remedy, a shop that not only makes excellent peanut butter smoothies, but also sells raw organic food and offers an extensive range of beauty treatments as a part of the wider salon, Remedy Bar. While it’s a no-brainer for the Sardinian tourist office to spruik its beautiful beaches, the interior of the island – with its jaw-dropping array of ruins, ancient and, perhaps more intriguingly, contemporary – is a neglected part of this place. The hundreds of abandoned mines and villages are breathtaking. Taking a fortnight to wind your way around the sheer granite hills to investigate places such as Ingurtosu and Montevecchio on the west coast, as well Nebida and Masua further along the stunning Costa Verde, is the perfect way to dig into the life and history of the island. If 20th-century abandoned buildings are too modern for you, head to Barumini, about 90 minutes’ drive from Cagliari, and immerse yourself in the ruins of the Nuraghic people. Their monolithic Nuraghes – stone fortresses and villages – of which there are some 7000 on the island, date from the 12th century BC. Amazing. ●

This doesn’t mean trying to get huge bulky muscles by lifting heavy weights but we should all aim to get two or three resistance workouts done a week. Yoga, Pilates or body weight training are types of resistance training I always recommend. The benefits are improved posture, and increased strength and lean muscle-mass, all resulting in faster burning of fat and lower risk of injury.

7/8 LEARNING CENTRE , MLC SPECIAL PROMOTION

onstruction has started on a new state-ofthe-art learning centre for the year 7 and 8 students at Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC) in Kew. When completed in mid-2019, the new centre will offer 24 configurable spaces for the college’s year 7 and year 8 students, with additional extended flexible learning spaces, creativity studios including the latest media production technologies; and a multi-purpose rooftop garden with outdoor teaching space. The project is the first stage of MLC’s masterplan for its Barkers Road campus, and is one of the college’s most significant projects in recent years. MLC principal Diana Vernon says the design of the 7/8 Learning Centre by leading education architects McIldowie Partners was informed by MLC’s innovative approach to learning and teaching. “The architects have translated our current and planned approaches to teaching and learning across the curriculum within the centre’s design,” Vernon says. “We also engaged with the University of Melbourne on the latest educational design research which identifies how the built environment significantly impacts the way students learn, and the outcomes they are able to achieve. “Importantly, we consulted with students throughout the process and observed student learning patterns, styles and preferences.” Trials have been conducted within MLC’s current year 8 building to assess the impact of various features, fixtures and technologies on learning. The scale of the learning spaces and break-out areas were specifically designed to support student learning, aligned with their wellbeing. The centre will be a new “home” for year 7 and 8 students, who are currently based in separate buildings. “Being together in the one building will strengthen that sense of community and belonging for students transitioning to secondary school,” Vernon says. “This new centre provides contemporary spaces to enable 21st-century learning and further cements MLC’s leadership as an innovator in education.” ●

OUTDOOR SPACES The project has created the opportunity to concurrently redevelop a central plaza and garden area in the heart of MLC’s Kew campus. The space, to be reopened fully later this year, will become a focal point for the entire college community, and includes an outdoor amphitheatre, an abundance of shared seating, and terraced grass areas. The new centre’s development has also allowed for a full resurface of MLC’s multi-sports oval. ●
