n 1997, actor Rodger Corser had what he calls an old-fashioned, sliding-doors moment. Now 45, Corser was working at Melbourne’s Crown Casino in the audiovisual department, contracted to Steve Vizard’s Artist Services company. His job was to do anything and everything, including following Crown’s character Mr Pokie around, filming excited punters when a car was won or a huge jackpot went off. He was also fronting a number of pub and original bands, playing all over Melbourne including on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy, and King Street in the city. “I used to sneak out on the overnight shifts – sorry Steve,” he says. “I was playing in bands and if I had a gig on, I would literally take my pair of trousers and my shirt off, and take off and take the mobile phone with me.” After doing a media studies degree at Deakin University’s Rusden campus, Corser initially

Rather than studying his craft at NIDA or WAAPA, as many Australian actors do, Corser learnt on the job. “I literally did my apprenticeship on screen,” he says. “I avoid watching myself from those early days, as that’s how I learnt. I was bad and you make lots of mistakes.” Twenty years since the groundbreaking musical, Corser is one of Australia’s most recognised and popular actors. He’s had lead roles on Underbelly, McLeod’s Daughters, Water Rats and Rush, and most recently, as Dr Hugh Knight in Channel 9’s Doctor Doctor Doctor. Series three of Doctor Doctor has just finished filming in the NSW town of Mudgee, and is now on air – the show is by far the most watched drama on Australian television. This season, Doctor Doctor is reaching a national average audience of 1.2 million. The role – and the cast – is an actor’s dream come true, according to Corser. “When we go to Mudgee we are away from our

“I think they tried to ask me for ID, but I walked into the pub with a guitar, so they let me in.” Whenever he comes back to Melbourne, and perhaps whenever he drives up and down King Street, Corser is reminded of Underbelly. He played Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Owen, the cop trying to bring down gangland identity Carl Williams in 2008’s successful Channel 9 series. Hanging out in the band and club scene in King Street in the late 1990s, it was inevitable Corser knew some of the characters the series was about. But just exactly who those characters are, he is keeping to himself. “I had met a couple of those guys but I didn’t know what they did back then,” Corser says. “I went to Sydney in the early 2000s when it was all happening. When I came back to film Underbelly, I bumped into some of the guys who I knew back in the day. “We all thought it was very ironic that I was playing a copper as well.”

have been in another industry; it would have been very different.” RODGER CORSER ON HIS EARLY CAREER thought a career behind the camera was where he would end up. Then while working at the casino, he attended an open casting call for the musical Rent, at the insistence of one of his colleagues, which was being held at the Prince of Wales in St Kilda. “They didn’t want the usual suspects,” Corser says. “I definitely wasn’t perfect, I think that they auditioned me about eight times to make sure I was right. “I ended up getting the role and I think that was very, very lucky. If it wasn’t for that show I could have been in another industry; it would have been very different. It was a real sliding-doors moment.” The American producers saw something special in Corser that day, and he has never looked back. Rent was more than just a musical for Corser. He formed a relationship with singer Christine Anu, who was also starring in the show; they have a daughter, Zipporah, 15. He is now married to Renae Berry and living in Sydney; they have three children – Budd, 8, Cilla, 6, and Dustin, three.

families for 10 days, so we are in the pub every night having dinner,” he says. “Everyone talks work, debriefs, has a few wines and then we get to know about everyone’s lives and families. It’s a really warm set, it’s a bit like being on school camp for the cast. We get really close, really quickly.” We are catching up for this interview over a coffee in Melbourne; three days earlier, the 2018 Gold Logie nominee played in his first Australian Rules grand final, winning the flag with Sydney’s St George in the masters competition. Afterwards, he sat on the hill with his family and teammates and had some beers; a great moment, Corser recalls. “It was awesome, and I kicked a couple of goals.” Growing up in Melbourne, Corser went to East Doncaster High and played cricket at a high level until he was 25. He has a strong connection to the East Doncaster area; it was only last year that his family home was sold. He played his first gig in a band in a Melbourne pub when he was underage.

The US may beckon for the Corser family; he once had a holding deal with the powerful American television network, ABC. They literally paid him to do nothing, while they searched for the perfect role. He nearly took part in an American pilot version of Offspring Offspring, but the timing wasn’t right. Now his kids are a bit older, he is open to going to the US pilot season in February next year with his family, and seeing what happens. In the meantime, his next local role is in the ABC series Glitch, for which he has to lose up to eight kilos. And now that the third series of Doctor Doctor has been filmed, Corser will return for a while to being a family man, which he loves. “It’s definitely my turn. My wife is studying kinesiology and some other therapies, and she has been juggling the kids and that while I’ve been away. “I’ll get back into the trenches so to speak and start making the school lunches and taking them to swimming, so Renae can do her studies. “I’ve got to catch up on some of the school dropoff and pick-ups.” ●

A moving outback memoir T H E R E VI E W

here’s always a degree of scepticism when picking up the memoirs of somebody who has barely turned 30, but Rick Morton’s life has been anything but ordinary. One Hundred Years of Dirt tells the sad and often brutal story of Morton’s upbringing in the Queensland outback, followed by years in abject urban poverty. Morton’s grandfather, George Morton, owned a cattle station the size of Belgium and was a “total bastard” of a man. He abused his seven kids, particularly Morton’s father Rodney, who, in turn, inflicted tremendous pain on his family. “Ours is a trauma passed on from one generation to another,” laments Morton as he chronicles in appalling detail the breakdown of his parents’ marriage; a horrific accident that nearly killed his brother Toby, who later became a drug addict; and his grim teenage

years in a housing commission property with his long-suffering but loving mum, Deb. Morton opens up about his own drug abuse and the mental health problems that triggered suicide attempts. He writes movingly about the stress of coming out as gay and his fear of family rejection. Morton, a journalist with The Australian, buttresses his story with studies into the effect of poverty on the brain, and how low-income families are more prone to dysfunction and violence. He rails against

t’s the latest instalment from serial cafe owner Julien Moussi, the business tycoon who has bought and sold 12 cafes in the past decade, with a portfolio that includes Tinker in Northcote and MOB in Camberwell. Chilli scramblers pack some heat, a generous serve tumbled with bacon, crispy fried shallots, cherry toms and parmesan. Add a rosti for $4.50? Yep, do it. It’s a house-made, crunchy-soft number that’s “a labour of love”, according to Moussi, and it’s what all rostis should be. On the health front, a granola brekkie bowl kickstarts the day with a saucy boost of peanut butter, acai, yoghurt and bee pollen, or go the Blue Butterfly tea chia pudding, one of the prettiest brunch dishes around, with a splodgy cumulus dollop of COYO (coconut yoghurt), sweet buckwheat

clusters bejewelled with pomegranate seeds, desiccated coconut, fresh strawbs and mango jerky. Each dish is beautifully presented on bespoke crockery, delivered by a sunny bunch of waiters. They’ll wax lyrical about Inglewood’s Roosevelt Blend for as long as you like, or sort you with a malted and salted caramel shake pronto. Downers: there’s no wifi, pricing is in the upper echelon, and at this stage, it’s not licenced, but there’s one in the works. Apart from these quibbles, experience and a big budget have given Bentwood a flying start as Fitzroy’s new benchmark cafe. We’ll be back to try the salmon pokecado. ●

onstruction has started on a new state-ofthe-art learning centre for the year 7 and 8 students at Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC) in Kew. When completed in mid-2019, the new centre will offer 24 configurable spaces for the college’s year 7 and year 8 students, with additional extended flexible learning spaces, creativity studios including the latest media production technologies; and a multi-purpose rooftop garden with outdoor teaching space. The project is the first stage of MLC’s masterplan for its Barkers Road campus, and is one of the college’s most significant projects in recent years. MLC principal Diana Vernon says the design of the 7/8 Learning Centre by leading education architects McIldowie Partners was informed by MLC’s innovative approach to learning and teaching. “The architects have translated our current and planned approaches to teaching and learning across the curriculum within the centre’s design,” Vernon says. “We also engaged with the University of Melbourne on the latest educational design research which identifies how the built environment significantly impacts the way students learn, and the outcomes they are able to achieve. “Importantly, we consulted with students throughout the process and observed student learning patterns, styles and preferences.” Trials have been conducted within MLC’s current year 8 building to assess the impact of various features, fixtures and technologies on learning. The scale of the learning spaces and break-out areas were specifically designed to support student learning, aligned with their wellbeing. The centre will be a new “home” for year 7 and 8 students, who are currently based in separate buildings. “Being together in the one building will strengthen that sense of community and belonging for students transitioning to secondary school,” Vernon says. “This new centre provides contemporary spaces to enable 21st-century learning and further cements MLC’s leadership as an innovator in education.” ●

OUTDOOR SPACES The project has created the opportunity to concurrently redevelop a central plaza and garden area in the heart of MLC’s Kew campus. The space, to be reopened fully later this year, will become a focal point for the entire college community, and includes an outdoor amphitheatre, an abundance of shared seating, and terraced grass areas. The new centre’s development has also allowed for a full resurface of MLC’s multi-sports oval. ●

hen her older sister started school, Dr Deborah Priest was three. Eager to learn, she wanted to go to school, too. “My mother realised ballet classes weren’t going to be the answer and found a nursery kindy that would take me and so I started school, too!” she laughs. It was the start of an enduring love of learning that has led Priest to become principal of Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School at the beginning of this year. Born in England, Priest migrated to Tasmania with her family before settling in Melbourne. She graduated from Sunbury High School and completed a bachelor of science education, majoring in mathematics and physics, at the University of Melbourne. “I had an amazing mathematics teacher at school, Gary Hollingsworth, who was passionate and inspiring,” says Priest. “He told me I had an ability for mathematics and it would be a great thing if I considered teaching.” Three years in to her degree, designed to address a shortage of science and mathematics teachers, Priest became a relief teacher while she finished her studies. Her first job was at a technical school in a working-class Melbourne suburb. After this initial, challenging time in the classroom, Priest moved to Adelaide and worked with a computer company before, at the age of 23, joining a private girls’ school and becoming head of computer studies. “That school reinvigorated my passion and optimism for teaching,” she says. Priest also lectured in technology subjects at tertiary level before taking a seven-and-a-half-year break to raise two daughters. Priest completed a masters of education (management and leadership) and later a doctor of philosophy. When her daughters commenced school, she returned to the classroom and took on senior roles at an independent school on the Gold Coast. Shortly afterwards, Bond University invited her to help create an education course for career change students who wanted to become teachers. Working with young people drew Priest back and she took on leading roles at independent girls’ schools in Queensland before deciding to gather international experience. In 2014, Priest became principal of the Australian International School in Malaysia.

“That experience brought awareness of the different lenses families bring to education,” she says. “Some families are keen on a broad holistic education and see pastoral care, participation in sport, music and service to the community as important as academic outcomes. “Other families view academic performance as a primary goal and want the school to provide a pathway to a select range of careers.” During her interview for the role of principal at Ivanhoe Girls’, Priest brought a box containing artefacts that reflected her approach to education, including a small compass. “I see my job as ensuring each one of our girls leaves our school with their unique life compass,” Priest says. “I want them to be equipped with skills and confidence to know who they are, what they believe

in and what they want to do in the next few years – because it will change during their career.” Priest is overseeing a new strategic plan and is building on the foundations of her predecessors to ensure students receive “an education worth having”. “Since I commenced, each day has brought enormous joy and satisfaction in seeing our wonderful students explore every opportunity available to them in their learning and the optimism they have shared with me about their futures,” she says. “In the real world, you must be prepared to try things and fail because failing is an important life skill. An education worth having equips students with knowledge, skills, choice and a strong sense of self-identity. I want our students to be happy and to know who they are and how they will contribute to our world.” ● SARAH MARINOS

Showcasing the year’s best political cartoons, The Three-Ring Circus captures a world where fact and fiction collide and ringmasters, jugglers and acrobats have all stepped into the political Big Top. With its many tumultuous events, 2017 was another rich year for our nation’s political cartoonists who continue look behind the lines of the daily political sideshows to capture the spirit of our democracy in all its passion, scepticism and humour. ‘Behind the Lines’ is a travelling exhibition developed by Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, proudly supported by the National Collection Institutions Touring and Outreach program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians.

Dr. Tony Stubbs Eye Surgeon Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses.
