New traditions FEATURE STORY
Typical of his traditional design style, architect Christopher Doyle balances grand historic and contemporary in Toorak. B y PAU L B E S T
T
o say prominent Melbourne architect Christopher Doyle has a thing for Toorak undersells his connection to the affluent inner Melbourne suburb, renowned for its lavish properties with grand mansions and even grander prices. Sure, a large body of his South Yarra practice’s work is Toorak based. But it goes further. It is the deep appreciation Doyle has for a neighbourhood that still places a high value on tradition, and his respect for the houses already there. “I have consciously evolved our practice to

focus solely on a traditional approach,” Doyle says, but stresses: “it’s not the opposite of modernity … rather the condition of a necessary organic and evolutionary balance between permanence and change”. Looking at a new Christopher Doyle-designed construction often feels like something glamorous from the past. It has a traditional allure often found wanting in many modern luxury residences. This high-end, four-storey residence on Chastleton Avenue – one of a pair – when read together with its sibling produces a
stately, enduring appearance, typical of Doyle. “It’s virtually today’s version of the grand Victorian terrace home,” Marshall White director Marcus Chiminello says. Doyle says his traditional architecture better complements its location, whereas jarring oneoff designs make less sense in their suburban environment. In this way, he embraces architectural themes and design elements that are timeless, comfortably fitting with earlier periods or older homes in the street. In Toorak, this can span housing styles from

art deco and Georgian to Old English and French. But make no mistake, Doyle’s projects aren’t reproduction. Nor some hijacked period piece full of nostalgia and sentimentality. Rather, his houses are at once sympathetic to older houses and contemporary life. “This blend of tradition and contemporary is still hugely popular, particularly with the high-end client.” The interiors show a respect for long-standing notions such as craftsmanship and materiality while also feeling fully up to date with all the mod cons. With Chastleton Avenue, built by Cambridge Constructions, you sense this through the architect’s uncanny understanding of purpose and proportion, the versatility of the layout, uncommon city vantages, plunge pool, triple basement garage, lift, smart electronics and top appliances.

here are super cars that are firm on the road, lightly rattling the fillings in your teeth with every bump, and there are those that are so hard riding, they rearrange your rib cage. And then there is the Lamborghini Huracan Performante. Completely at home on a race track, the Performante is what can only be called brutal on real-world surfaces. It also has super-light seats that feel as comfortable as a dentist’s chair and deliver coccyx-clattering thwacks over potholes. This new and nut-rageously fast version of what was already an unnecessarily ballistic Huracan adds to that call-mychiropractor feeling with aluminium floor mats. What you’re soaking in, however, is a binary swirl of awesome technical proficiency, because this Lamborghini features the kind of aerodynamic genius previously only seen in race cars. The Performante recently broke records for driving around in a circle on a famous race track in Germany, and almost certainly broke more records for the noise its vicious V10 makes.
Sure with a roar like that, your neighbours will hate you if you slap down $483,866 for this car, but the police will love you for making their jobs so easy. Interestingly, what makes this car so stupidly fast is not so much its big 5.2-litre, V10 engine with too many kilowatts (the standard Huracan already has one of those), but something more subtle and scientific called Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva. What ALA does, using some very clever flaps and computers, is increase the down force on the car by an incredible 750 per cent. This means that, while it is slightly quicker than the original Huracan in a straight line (0 to 100kmh arrives in just 2.9 seconds), it is vastly faster around corners, because it feels like a gigantic God-hand is shoving you into the road. Which, in turn, means that it is vastly quicker around a race track, which is the only place a car this fierce, and this hard, belongs. Being Italian, however, Lamborghini encourages you to drive it on the road, and damn the chiropractic expense.
