Calling the shots The toughest challenge yet – a famous St Kilda eyesore – confronts new teams on The Block, who will spill sweat and sawdust to create landmark apartments.

s the teams for the new season of The Block walked into the old Gatwick Hotel in St Kilda for the first time, they had no idea they would be taking on the biggest project in the show’s history. “There’s nothing that can prepare you for that feeling when you’re thrust into a property like the Gatwick,” contestant and former professional netballer Carla says. “You walk in, the carpets are wet underfoot, there’s a smell that you’re confronted with. You’re a bit like a deer in headlights.” It’s a building with a patchy past. Built as a luxurious hotel in 1937, the Gatwick fell into disrepair, and had up to recently been used as a lowbudget rooming house. In the 14th season of The Block, five couples from across Australia will transform the notorious Fitzroy Street dive from rundown hotel to high-end apartment building over just 12 weeks. Architect Julian Brenchley, who has worked on the show since its first season, says transforming the building was a feat like no other. “We like to give ourselves challenges, so year on year the brief gets bigger and bolder. They’re the biggest apartments we’ve ever done.” Brenchley says. “It’s been really exciting being involved with the rebirth of a grand old dame.” The project is set to breathe new life into this somewhat downtrodden area of St Kilda. Hocking Stuart Albert Park director David Wood, who was the auctioneer of last season’s winning property by Josh Barker and Elyse Knowles, says locals have been positive about the building’s rejuvenation. “The Block renovating the Gatwick will be the catalyst for real improvement in Fitzroy Street and the surrounding streets,” Wood says. “A lot of people who live locally have said they’d be very interested to have a look at the apartments because they love the location.”

He says the apartments are likely to fetch record prices for the area. “There’s precious few that have the size that these properties have and there’s very few that have the nature of the renovation.” The task of having 10 relative novices designing, managing and completing a renovation of the quality and scale The Block requires is not a small one, but Brenchley says most of the applicants at least had some clue about what goes on on a building site. “People are getting more savvy with how things are done,” he says. “There are limitations, but then that’s when the creative juices are meant to flow.”

or former professional netballers and Bianca and Carla, their lack of experience on the tools is made up for by their ability to stay calm under pressure. Bianca won Commonwealth Games gold and silver for Australia in netball, and hit the court for the Melbourne Phoenix and Melbourne Vixens, where she played alongside Carla. They met about 15 years ago, and though they’ve not always lived in the same state, their friendship has lasted the test of time – and so far, the test of The Block. “Coming from a team sports background, you have that foundation of knowing what you need to make a good team, and I guess, that real hunger to win,” Carla says. “I still want to make sure we come out of this very good friends – that means more to me than anything else.” It was Bianca’s idea for them to audition for the show. Her dad is a builder and she has renovated a couple of small apartments in Melbourne. “Both of us have to be labourers, we have to carry as much stuff up stairs as we can,” Bianca says. “Anything where we can get our hands dirty, we’re doing it.”

She says friends told her to get a male counterpart to audition with – someone who could do more of the physical work – but Bianca says being a rare allgirl team was not a disadvantage. “I get budget-wise it might be helpful to have a guy with a trade,” Bianca says. “But like [season seven winners] Alisa and Lysandra [Fraser] showed, it’s possible and I hope it shows other girls that they could do it too.” Another team, West Australian fiancees Courtney and Hans, are also renovation rookies. The flight attendant and pilot met seven years ago and decided on a whim to try out for the show. “I think everyone loves a bit of a cliche and the pilot-flight attendant storyline everyone kind of loves,” Courtney says. She says arriving in Melbourne with no trade contacts – especially once they saw the condition of The Gatwick – was overwhelming. “I wanted to leave. I was like ‘we are way in over our heads, there’s absolutely no way in the world we are going to be able to do this’.” Hans says the pair have realised their tendency to be “rule followers” might not always work in their favour. “The whole thing is not to take ‘no’ for an answer, and it took us a while to cotton on to that,” Hans says. “You have to just throw all caution to the wind and persevere.” Carla says what she’s learnt about herself has made the stress of renovating a room a week worth it. “It’s the best thing I’ve ever done – I loved the experiences I had with netball – but this is a challenge that’s completely out of my comfort zone and to be able to do it gives me a massive sense of achievement.” ● THE BLOCK 2018 \ Premieres Sunday August 5, 7pm, on Channel 9. ● 9now.com.au

Bob Dylan has threaded his way through my life since I first discovered him when I was 15. His songs have guided me and carried me in different ways. The characters I am interested in writing about tend to be marginalised. They come from life’s underclass, and are often isolated: language is not necessarily easy for them. I have this feeling that if I don’t give them a story, then who will? Bob Dylan’s 1985 song, Up To Me, plays in my head every day as I write. I don’t understand the song, and yet I do. For me it is a song about sacrifice and determination and loneliness, and it always helps me.

I’ve always had the most idiotic fantasy about going back in time to May, 1965, and hanging around in the laneway behind London’s Savoy Hotel to watch Dylan filming the video to Subterranean Homesick Blues. It is a sublimely jumbled masterpiece of inchoate images, none of which make sense on their own, but which together erupt in the brain, to linger there like a dream you can never shake. And the video! Just him standing there in that lane, with that pile of cards. He dumped the cards in a skip and then went off to lunch. I would dive in after them.

As a 16 year old I’d play Like A Rolling Stone before going out. Then a friend loaned me Blonde On Blonde and we recited the lyrics to Visions Of Johanna. I hitched to Queensland because I wanted to say, I’d been ‘‘hittin’ some hard travelin’’. Saw him three nights running at The Music Bowl in 1978 and at Kooyong, The Palais, Rod Laver, Byron, and soon I’ll see him again. He was interviewed by a friend in 1986, and I found a spot by the hotel door, knowing he would have to walk past. He shook my hand. Brief, but deeply momentous.

I first heard Dylan in year 8 English class, 1977: the teacher gave us the lyrics and pressed play on his Casio cassette player. Like rolling stones we wandered, warbling out. The tune was threadbare, but the lyrics made rudimentary sense – I was hooked. The glaring honesty of Dylan’s unadorned delivery may be the reason few of his songs are covered. Who would dare match his frankness?

Another Side Of Bob Dylan will never be far from my player, as it’s the most warm, crackling, open fire of a record I think I’ve ever heard. From its plaintive ballads to its cheeky rags and waltzes, Bob just sounds so damn relaxed, and why wouldn’t he be? He’s a master enjoying a youthful peak, in easy command of a freaky God-given way with words and chords, and I think he knows it. Ballad in Plain D reduces me to tears and used to make me so nostalgic for childhood when I was still a child. It’s a perfect song among perfect songs. I also bust out New Morning pretty often for a dose of

that wizened, raise-the-kids-in-thecountry Bob. I find the simplicity of that record heart-wrenching, and somehow not very Bob at all. But I hate If Dogs Run Free. What the hell is that song? Going nuts for satay

hen HWKR approached me to take on one of their pop-up leases at their food hall in the Melbourne CBD, I came up with a Malaysian street food concept, which offers both traditional and fusion dishes. It was then that Chanteen was born, using family recipes passed down through the generations. Chanteen is cooking from scratch with no shortcuts, and this is my secret satay recipe. It is one our top-selling dishes along with the Char Kuey Teow. Don’t be overwhelmed by the list of ingredients as I guarantee you it is worth the hassle. Do it over the weekend, allowing 24 hours for the meat to marinate and if you haven’t got a charcoal grill, use the barbecue instead. However, charcoal will give you a deeper and smokier flavour, which you can’t get from an electric grill. If you think it’s all too much work, pop down to Chanteen before it closes on August 12. ●

Ingredients (Serves 4-6) 1.5kg chicken thigh (skin off), cut into bite-sized pieces Honey and water mixture, for basting Chicken satay marinade 200g shallots 100g garlic 25g galangal 60g lemongrass 25g ginger 20g turmeric powder 100g brown sugar 20g cumin powder 20g fennel powder 20g coriander powder Salt to taste 1 cup vegetable oil

20g dried chillies 50g long red chillies 60g shrimp paste (toasted) 200g shallots 100g garlic 30g fennel powder 30g coriander powder 50g lemongrass 30g ginger Satay sauce 2 cups vegetable oil 3 cups water 600g palm sugar, shaved 100g tamarind paste 500ml coconut milk 600g skinless roasted peanuts, blitzed to breadcrumb size 100ml sweet soy Method ■ For the satay marinade, blend all ingredients together until a

smooth paste is formed. ■ Marinate the pieces of chicken for a minimum of 12 hours. ■ Skewer the chicken and cook over charcoal or a barbecue for 5-10 minutes, basting with honey and water. ■ For the satay sauce paste, blend the ingredients together to form a smooth paste. ■ For the satay sauce, fry the paste in the oil for 3-5 minutes. Add the water and palm sugar and stir until dissolved. ■ Add the tamarind paste and coconut milk. Stir to combine. Allow to simmer for 10 minutes. ■ Add the peanuts and allow the sauce to thicken to a thick gravy. Add the soy and adjust salt levels if the sauce is too sweet. ■ Serve with compressed rice, cucumber and onions. ●

Southern style

iven the current turbo-charged interest in all things Tasmanian, it’s not surprising that the state’s pinot noir output is also attracting extra attention. It should. Tasmanian expressions of this fickle grape variety are among the best in the country and there’s an increasing acknowledgement that the state is home to several distinct subregions that make drinking the stuff even more interesting. Philip Kennedy, co-owner of recently refurbished Southbank restaurant Pure South, has not only been specialising in all things Tasmanian at his restaurant for 14 years but also makes wine in Tasmania, including pinot noir. He has watched the wine industry develop and reckons it’s like it has “advanced 40 years in the last 15 years”. “I think what’s interesting is that people are PU R E S O U T H

finally acknowledging and taking real pride in the length and the breadth of the quality in Tasmania and that there are distinct subregions,” he says. “In the north, you get more fragrant, bright pomegranate expressions, while in the south the wines are more broody, more savoury with dark cherry characteristics. ‘‘In the east, it’s hard to put into words, but they display a savoury character with an almost lolly-like lick of musk and a quality like dark red blossom.” For those wanting to compare and contrast Tasmania’s pinot noir (and others), Pure South is hosting VIN Diemen, a former wine trade show that’s evolved into an annual festival highlighting the state’s food and wine output. The festival will take over the top floor of Pure South and some of the ground level with 26

TRAVEL \ ICEL AND Marketing efforts to overcome Iceland’s postfinancial crisis economy spawned an unprecedented tourism boom. And the introduction of Icelandair’s #MyStopover hashtag in 2014 in particular, was at the root of this. The social media campaign popularised the airline’s longstanding deal allowing passengers a stopover in Reykjavík at no extra charge on their trans-Atlantic flight. As a result, the number of Americans visiting Iceland each year jumped from 240,000 in 2015 to over 570,000 in 2017. Last year more than two million tourists entered Iceland – more than six times the total population – and it’s not hard to see why.

The amazing Northern Lights ignite Mount Kirkjufell. The Blue Lagoon is very popular – there are two hotels on site – but remains a must-visit destination. Book ahead online: you’ll want to spend at least two hours relaxing in the 37-39 degree water. Spend the rest of your weekend exploring the colourful homes and cute coffee shops of Reykjavik. Try the Stofan Café, Reykjavík Roasters, Bergsson Mathús, Sandholt or Brauð & Co – which serves some of the best cinnamon buns in the world. The best view of the city can be found atop the Lutheran church, Hallgrímskirkja – an iconic Iceland landmark that can be seen from almost every point in the city. ●

The Golden Circle is the most popular tourist drive in Iceland as it includes three major natural sites in a 300-kilometre route – Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, and the astonishing Gullfoss Waterfall. Drive yourself or take a tour. Other destinations to visit during the week are the 60-metre plus waterfalls Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss; the black-sand Reynisfjara Beach outside Vik; and the glacier river Jökulsárlón in the country’s south-east. Of course, if you are visiting Iceland in winter you’ll want to see the Northern Lights; aurora borealis. If you’re lucky, you’ll see a stunning light display from Þingvellir, or from the free thermal pool at Seljavallalaug. ●

vanhoe Girls’ Grammar School’s deputy head of junior school Helen Moore is passionate about learning – particularly about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). She continues to help inspire young students such as Fiona Finch who is in year 5. Fiona has found her own passion for science, particularly robotics and to solve the mysteries of coding.

I think I’ve always liked STEM-related things. I like investigating things, pretty much everything that I find interesting. Anything from a leaf to my dad’s newest thingamajig. My dad’s an automation engineer so he brings things home that are really interesting. He mostly likes fixing things – the other day he fixed the dishwasher, he fixes our cars and stuff like that. I like to help him. I really love working with coding and robots. What I don’t really like is finding a problem (with them) but what I do really like is fixing the problem. Ms Moore started teaching me in year 2 with extension subjects such as maths extension. She was co-ordinating the coding club in year 3 and I joined the club and learnt about coding there. Lego Technic Club is run by her and, in Lego Technic, I build things and I’ve learnt about levers, pulleys and gears. There’s no coding with it. When I learned about the EV3 (robot) I copied the codes to drive the robots but I didn’t actually know what the codes meant in the beginning. Afterwards I understood that some code means this wheel has that much power and other code means a smiley face will appear on the screen. I do a lot of things at school – I play the flute and clarinet, do t-ball training, hurdles, choir, aerobics, band, gardening club, running club and synchronised swimming. I also do debating – I had to argue that robots should be in every home. I don’t agree with that but I was debating for the affirmative. After school I also do German school and horse riding and I’m doing cross-country skiing. I’m used to being busy. Ms Moore has taught me a lot. To problem solve, to have a balance between working and playing. She also taught me that it’s good to make mistakes so I can learn from them. I’m definitely going to keep doing science through

school. I don’t know what I’m going to do when I grow up but I want it to be STEM-related.

HELEN SAYS … This is my 19th year at Ivanhoe Girls’. When I read the school’s prospectus, I just fell in love with the school for all the extracurricular activities that were offered. I love music, musicals and all those things that this school does so well. It offered everything that I thought a balanced education was about. Like Fiona I’ve always been very curious about how the world works. So I love learning new things, I love problem solving and investigating and working things out. It goes hand-in-hand with STEM, understanding how and why things work. When I was in year 10 computers came into schools and I had to learn how to program a boat to sail across the screen. I learnt then how not to teach technology to girls because I was completely intimidated and not instructed well. I often think back to that when I’m working with students that they feel safe and supported ... to make mistakes and have the success of solving problems. In my role as deputy head of junior school I can work with any year level from prep to year 6 and I have worked with support and extension classes.

I’ve made technology my specialty because I’m quite passionate about it and I enjoy it and make the time to play with it. I coordinate the debating teams and I also run the LEGO Technic Club. I realised that students often learn about coding without understanding the basic principles of physics and how things move. Building LEGO Technic can help develop these understandings. Maths is also my passion. I’ve always loved maths even in primary school. I’ve actually worked with Fiona for four years now. This year I introduced Fiona to the EV3 robots. We needed two more robots so Fiona offered to take two kits home to build them over the weekend. She built them in less than half an hour and then she spent hours teaching herself how to code them without a computer. Back at school, she showed me how to do this too! I think Fiona’s relentless curiosity and passion for learning resonates with me. She’s a total allrounder. She does need to remember to have balance. Fiona can be very hard on herself so we’ve had a few chats about how it’s OK to make mistakes because that’s how we learn. ● MELISSA HEAGNEY

t was advice from a friend of the family that led Carla Rossimel, 27, to her career as an engineer. Rossimel was halfway through year 12 when she realised she didn’t want to pursue a career as a physiotherapist. “It was sort of a last-minute decision to study engineering,” Rossimel explains. “I had planned to studying something in the medical field – maybe physiotherapy – then halfway through year 12 I realised I couldn’t do it because I didn’t want to spend too much time in hospitals. “A family friend identified how much maths and science meant to me and she asked if I’d ever considered engineering. I had never really heard of it and she explained ... civil engineering and how civil engineers design roads, bridges, waterways. That really excited me.” Rossimel discovered her passion for maths and sciences as a student at OLMC Heidelberg, receiving support and encouragement from her teachers to excel in her studies. “I had different types of mentors for different facets of my learning ... for academia two come to mind, a maths teacher and a physics/science teacher,” she says. “My physics/science teacher gave me the passion and the confidence to pursue what I now pursue. She believed in my abilities and she helped me understand the concepts I was studying.” She also had teachers who encouraged her confidence to lead. “In year 7 I was really shy ... but I was thrown into different leadership positions throughout school – I was the college vice-captain in year 12 and the 12-year-old girl who started at Our Lady’s would never have even dreamed of taking on that position, so I saw a huge transition that happened during my time there,” Rossimel says. After graduating from OLMC, Rossimel studied a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering) with honours at Monash University after being awarded a full scholarship. She credits her parents with supporting her to follow her dreams, even when the degree she was studying proved challenging. “Engineering can be quite a difficult degree – sometimes I would think, ‘maybe I’m not smart enough for this’ - but my mum and dad would always give me a lot of confidence that I could get through it. “My mum would cut out articles of engineers

when they were in the paper and give them to me so that would encourage me to keep going. So I couldn’t have done it without them.” Rossimel says hard work led her to job and other leadership opportunities during university. “If you try to excel in everything you do, doors to other opportunities will open. I was awarded that scholarship and then so many other opportunities came along. I was given leadership roles and went on to undergraduate studies and work over the summer break and eventually full-time work,” she says. “I spent six months in an underground mine in rural NSW. “I was given the opportunity to go into a brand new mine as they were excavating it to understand how the mine was structurally behaving in hard rock mass, so that was fascinating. “I developed such a love for mining engineering I then went to a university in Denmark – I spent a semester there doing arctic engineering and mining in the Greenland/Sweden area. That was a massive highlight.”

Rossimel is currently working as a structural engineer for a company that is working on Melbourne’s rail grade separations and levelcrossing removals. “At the moment I can’t wait to take my family and friends to the Mernda rail extension. A lot of the girls I went to school with bought houses in Mernda and are really struggling to get into the city because they’d have to drive all the way to South Morang. Now I’ve designed three bridges along that Mernda railway so it’s really nice to see the impact that it will have on them,” Rossimel says. The Mernda rail project will be completed later this year, around the same time Rossimel will return to OLMC Heidelberg for her 10-year reunion. Her advice for young women looking to get into an engineering job is to “100 per cent go for it”. “My eyes have been opened up to so many facets of engineering and it’s really amazing what you can achieve by having the fundamentals of maths and science behind you.
