The 36-year-old, first-time mum-to-be, and suburban Sydney-born star of hit Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale, was overlooked at the Emmy Awards last year. ““I am Norma Abraham” … and I’m a 90-year-old ballet dancer My profession was actually as an opera singer.

I was singing professionally until I was about 60 – that was 30 years ago. I’ve only been doing ballet classes since Tina (professional ballet dancer and choreographer Tina Yong) started running it at ReCreation Health Club Trackside in Hampton a few years ago. Tina said to me, “You should come to ballet”. I said, “At 86, 87?” And she said, “Yes, you can do it”. I think the youngest in the class are in their 40s, but mostly they’re in their 50s, 60s and 70s. It’s fun. You’re not going to be ballerinas, obviously. I did ballet when I was younger, up until I was about 12, so I still remember it all. You need to be dainty, you need to be light. At this age, you lose a bit of spring in your step. But I’m still flexible, otherwise I couldn’t do it. I’ve always loved dance. I did all sorts – Russian dancing, tap dancing. I loved ballroom dancing. I don’t feel 90, that’s for sure. I think I feel more like around 70. When I was 87, I did a four-day horse ride in the Snowy Mountains. We rode for seven hours a day and we camped in swags at night. I do a lot of hiking with my son. Last year, I climbed the Tiger’s Nest in Bhutan. It was a fivehour-and-50-minute hike with a rise of 1000 metres up to 3000 metres. I could hardly breathe. Really, it was so hard. Everyone was coming up to me wanting photos, saying “congratulations”. Some of the younger ones in the group came halfway up on horses. I probably should have done that, too. Last October, I went to Madagascar. This year, I’m going to Malta, Cyprus and Greece. I’ve had three husbands who all died. I was with my last husband for 38 years and he died four years ago. He was a dentist and he retired at 81. I helped him in the surgery until I was 75. Yes, I’m sure working that long kept me young, and we used to run every weekend about seven kilometres together. I still run a little bit. Everyone says to me, “Are you going to find a new husband?” No, thank you. I think a lot of staying fit and feeling younger is mental; it’s determination. It’s not easy to come six times a week to aerobics, Pilates and ballet. I always have to push myself. I’ll keep doing ballet for as long as I can. I don’t have any trouble with it. ●

LIGHT & SHADE Yvonne Strahovski isn’t afraid to play the villain, making this Australian star one of Hollywood’s most versatile actresses. Wo r d s VI O L E T WI L D E R

or a woman as sensationally luminous as Yvonne Strahovski, it’s remarkable how the actress has done her best work by going to the dark side. She made her acting breakthrough in the comedy series Chuck, then played serial killer Hannah McKay on Dexter, Dexter followed by a lead role in demonic flick I, Frankenstein and later appeared in 24: Live Another Day, in which she played a CIA agent dealing with a biological terrorist threat. But none of those projects could match the dystopian dread of The Handmaid’s Tale, where Strahovski co-stars as the villainous Serena Joy opposite Elisabeth Moss (as Offred, her family’s handmaid) and Joseph Fiennes as her husband, Gilead commander Fred Waterford. “When you put it like that,” she says, in response to what is an ever-growing list of magnificently moody movies, “I can see a pattern. I guess what it comes down to is me being fascinated by what drives human beings to do horrible things or behave in despicable ways. “The characters I have played in major roles are so away from who I am and my own personal experiences that it becomes a great challenge for me to try to figure out that behaviour. It means I can dig deep into that kind of psychology, and I love that because I’m constantly searching to unravel those layers and understand why people are capable of certain actions … and whether they’re even aware of who they’ve become or who they are.” In real life, the 36-year-old has seen the impact of the Handmaid’s themes in the causes she is passionate about. When filming the Margaret Atwood-penned series in Toronto, Strahovski felt compelled to join a mass Women’s March street protest held in solidarity with the much larger event organised in Washington DC. “When I went on the Women’s March in Toronto, there were people holding up signs for The Handmaid’s Tale, and I thought that was just incredible. It showed me just how powerful the novel had been for all those years,” she says, with a nod to the book’s original 1985 release. “Even before our show came out and made such a splash in 2017,

these women were already holding up signs referencing the book and that was monumental for me.” Such has been Strahovski’s thirst for new projects that with season two of Handmaid’s barely finished, she is back in The Predator Predator, which hits cinemas on September 13 … and yes, once again, she’s gone to the dark side. The plot is familiarly well-trodden – by accident, the universe’s most lethal intergalactic hunters are triggered to return to Earth, with the salvation of the planet left in the hands of a ragtag crew of exsoldiers, associated misfits, a hapless kid (whose faux pas opened the door for the planetary invasion), and his mum, Emily, played by Strahovski.

“It’s probably the biggest movie I’ve done in terms of action sequences and impact, and I’m so proud of it. It marks a bit of a crossroads where I’m perhaps going to change my ideas going forward, but we’ll see what comes about,” she says, most likely referring to the imminent birth of her first child with actor-director husband Tim Loden. Perhaps fittingly, her last film engagement was here in Melbourne, where any pregnancy discomfort didn’t prevent her from embarking on 11-hour daily

shoots in and around the city for psychological thriller Angel of Mine, which is set for release next year. Returning to home shores was a big occasion for the actress, who grew up in Sydney as the daughter of Polish parents (her real name is Strzechowski). She would soon land various roles in Australian film and TV productions before leaving for Los Angeles in 2006, with that big break coming as spy Sarah Walker in Chuck – the short-lived comedy series that brought her considerable attention, as well as a geek following that is strangely at odds with the darker characters she has embraced since. “Those early roles seem like a long time ago now, but coming back to Australia brings it all home. I always forget just how much more of a relaxed pace there is here, and that’s so nice to re-acquaint myself with. “I also realise just how much my accent has morphed into this strange, twisted mash-up, which is troubling and entertaining at the same time,” she laughs, “but coming home is all about good memories.” Now embracing a self-imposed hiatus in order to enjoy the pleasures of motherhood, it seems Strahovski is eyeing brighter, more uplifting roles when she returns to the film set. “I feel the experience of playing various types of characters have helped me to grow as an individual - you learn so much about yourself and life in general, as well as appreciating how other people see the world, often so differently from you. “However, playing complex characters does wear you down – you go back home and you’re not only exhausted physically, but still haunted by your character. “In the past, there have been good releases from that – for The Handmaid’s Tale I spent a lot of my time off enjoying the Canadian wilderness which is so vast and beautiful, and in that sense it’s similar to Australia, just much colder … so exploring was my therapy. Obviously, I’ll have a different escape in future,” she says, referencing her growing family, “but I think the roles will be different, and that’s exciting for me.” ●

Simply delicious sweets in a snap

riends know me as one of the most spontaneous people ever, and I’m a feeder. I often come up with impromptu dinner parties, where I call a few mates and invite them, not knowing what to cook. I do like cooking under pressure, after all. The entrees and mains are usually easy – I’ll pop down to the market and pick up what’s in season. But when it comes to dessert, I have to rack my brain to think of something quick and easy. I always find myself stuck trying to create a dessert that takes more than an hour. The idea of this recipe is to show how you can make something simple and turn it into something decadent in minutes. All you need are a few staples, some beautiful glasses and any toppings available in your pantry. I’ve used freeze-dried raspberry powder from speciality stores and I’ve made my own candied lemon wheels that can be stored in an airtight container for a few months. I’ve also cheated and used frozen mangoes. Of course, fresh is always better. ● Instagram: @diana.chan.au

Tropical mango cheesecake with ginger snaps Ingredients (Serves 6) 200g ginger snaps 60ml melted butter 250ml thickened cream 60g caster sugar 250g diced mangoes 200g cream cheese 100g mascarpone Zest and juice of 1 lemon ½ cup icing sugar Pulp of 3 passionfruit Freeze-dried raspberry powder (optional) Lemon wheels 1 whole lemon, thinly sliced (cross section) Caster sugar Method ■ For the candied lemon wheels, put them on a lined baking tray and sprinkle liberally with caster sugar. Set the oven to 90C and let them dehydrate until the sugar has melted and dried. This should take 45 minutes. Remove and set aside to cool.

Meanwhile, place the melted butter and ginger snap biscuits into a food processor and blitz to resemble coarse bread crumbs. Set aside in a small bowl. Next, place the thickened cream into a mediumsized bowl and add the sugar. Whisk together until the cream thickens. Be careful to not overwhip. You want to achieve soft peaks and the cream should start to thicken in under five minutes. To make the cheese mixture, blend together cream cheese, mascarpone, lemon juice and zest and icing sugar together until smooth. Set aside in the fridge to cool. To assemble, place two tablespoons of crushed ginger snaps at the base of the glass. Add in two tablespoons of the cream cheese and mascarpone mixture. Now add in four or five pieces of the diced mangoes. Top with a heaped tablespoonful of the cream and pour over a few drops of the passionfruit pulp. Sprinkle over some freeze-dried raspberry powder and serve with a candied lemon wheel. ●

pproaching from left field can pay dividends when creating a cocktail list, but there must be a right time, a chance to use the safe word and admit that the world might not be ready for a prawn oil-infused martini. Experiment all you like, but a drink still needs to taste good. This was Oscar Eastman’s approach when he was asked to get creative with the cocktails at Heroes, a new, exuberantly decorated three-level bar, hawkerstyle diner and karaoke bar in Chinatown. Eastman has proved himself adept at boundary pushing at Eau Di Vie in Melbourne, Loretta’s in Fitzroy North and, most recently, at Lay Low in Seddon. So when Alicia Cheong, co-owner and chef at Heroes, approached him to “create some weird cocktails” he jumped at the chance. “Alicia has cooked American barbecue and her background is in Singaporean and Malaysian

cuisine and she’s combining both of these in the kitchen at Heroes,” Eastman says. “She wanted cocktails inspired by the same elements.” They started by making “strange, unique and odd” syrups and infusions – the prawn oil-infused martini, and a satay-inspired number were among the first attempts – before whittling his ideas down to a strong list of drinks that were fun and unpretentious, but didn’t sacrifice the quality of the booze. They’re also unafraid of a pun. Chai a Lil’ Tenderness is a sweet, rich and creamy number that combines Sailor Jerry spiced rum, chai, condensed milk and preserved mandarin in a supereasy drinking way that’s both playful and grown up. Creamy cocktail fans should also consider the Grasshopper-inspired Let’s Pandance, a green, seriously tasty combination of pandan-infused gin, condensed milk, egg and creme de cacao. The drinks look good too, not overly garnished but always with a visual flourish. The Float On, a mix of tequila, smoked lychee and vanilla is dramatically stained with a shiraz float. Cocktails are available on all three levels of Heroes – rooftop bar, dining area and karaoke bar (private karaoke rooms will be available soon) – but are best enjoyed in the gloriously campy dining room. There you can also get skewers cooked over charcoal (duck heart, chicken satay, tingling lamb), chicken wings with chilli oil and fresh lime and excellent, spicy achar pickles. “The approach with the drinks was all about not taking it too seriously and keeping people happy,” Eastman says. He’s nailed the brief. ●

Signature drink If you want to get a little funky, the Gold Finger will give you what you need. It’s a vodka martini with several twists – sake, Szechuan pepper and seaweed – yet it still respects the spirit of the classic. PAIR IT WITH … BBQ chicken wings, hot and smoky from the grill, juicy and tender with lime juice and chilli oil offering strong, vital backing vocals. ●

Just dropped P.Quiles Vermouth Rosso, RRP $40 This intense, beautiful, raisiny vermouth from Alicante in Spain has been made by the folks at Primitivo Quiles winery since the 1920s. Its base is Muscatel that’s macerated with a bunch of herbs including fennel, sage, ginger, wormwood and clove. The deep-red colour and some of the sweetness comes from the addition of arrope, a thick syrup made from grape must. It’s delicious in a Negroni or an Americano but just as good straight up over ice with a slice of orange. ●

The leggy Chilean-born star – who migrated to Melbourne aged four with her family – went on to become the face/body of Megan Gale’s swimwear line five years ago, the face of the Australian Grand Prix in 2010 and has since focused on an acting career – finding fame through her three-year role as policewoman Katrina Chapman on Home & Away. “Our bodies change, and I’ve had two children. I couldn’t imagine being on the runway again,” says Miller, who sounds relieved to be sitting in the front row and schmoozing instead. “I would definitely need some lessons again,” she says. “It would be like learning to ride a bike again and my body can’t do what it did 15 years ago.”

Miller couldn’t be happier with her new ambassadorial role. “I have fond memories of being part of fashion week all those years ago,” she says. “You buzz off the vibe and atmosphere and it was a no-brainer from me – an absolute yes to be involved in this capacity. My family still live in Melbourne and it feels like it’s come full circle for me.” She counts Bianca Jagger as a fashion inspiration and fuses a love of comfort dressing with a bohemian backbeat in her own wardrobe. In there you’ll find Scanlan Theodore, Bassike, Camilla and Marc and international label Isabel Marant. “I remember thinking Bianca Jagger had a cool energy in the way she would wear suit jackets and carry herself,” Miller says.

“I was into the whole aesthetic – the ’90s blazer with jeans. It was a vibe I gravitated towards.” After leaving Home & Away last year, she has returned to TV to star alongside Todd Lasance in the new Channel 9 crime-thriller series Bite Club. “It was sad to leave my character on Home & Away, but I’m excited to see what else is on the horizon,” she says. “And as far as juggling my work and family life, it’s a constant but it’s all I know and I just make it work.” Miller says of her sons, Isaiah, 15, and Lennox, 11: “The boys are the most important in my life. “They are my priority and they know that. I work around them, and sometimes, it means I forget one had soccer practice, but always have a backpack in the car, am on the run and juggle like everybody else does.” ●

hether it be your desk, your inbox or your house, a spring clean is a great way to regain focus and be more productive. When it comes to your health it’s no different. I see the best results when people wipe the slate clean rather than tip-toe around and make one or two changes. So here are five practical tips that could be the catalyst for the spring clean that you desperately need.

start fresh and get rid of any out-of-date ingredients. It’s also a good excuse to chuck out any packaged and processed foods and replace them with healthy pantry staples like quinoa and tinned tuna. Take a good look at your spice rack too; it might be time to replenish some with new herbs and spices as these can lose potency over time. MOVE IN THE MORNING \ I’m always telling my clients that the best time of day to exercise is when you actually will. But as the mornings become lighter and the weather warms up, it’s the perfect opportunity to get moving in the morning. Reassess your routine and try to include a few morning workouts into your week – this is an awesome way to set your circadian rhythm, or internal body clock, helping to regularise your sleep and wake rhythm and ensure a better night’s sleep. UNPLUG \ I like to use the start of spring as a seasonal reminder to slow down and take a break from the digital world. Think about minimising your technology time where possible, by focusing on

Leave your phone out of reach while you eat, for instance, and focus on each bite. I also love going for a quick, brisk walk without my phone to clear my head. I’m always telling my 28ers that variety is the spice of life, so why not ditch the winter comfort foods and experiment with inseason ingredients like rhubarb or grapefruit? My tip is to write out a shopping list and visit the market first. Only visit the supermarket for anything that you can’t get at the market, not the other way around. Prioritising fresh produce makes all the difference.

START A SLEEP ROUTINE \ When it comes to

keeping our health in check, sleep is all too often at the bottom of our list of priorities. But the importance of getting adequate sleep is something that I cannot stress enough. Take a look at how much sleep you have been getting each night. I believe that seven hours is the sweet spot – so if you are getting less (or more), focus on putting a proper sleep routine in place. Avoid technology in the lead-up to bed, and ensure you go to bed at the same time every night in a cool, dark bedroom. A better sleep routine will allow you to bounce out of bed with more energy, well rested to take on the day ahead. The time to start is now. What is my home worth? This is what every home owner wants to know when selling. The honest answer to this question often leaves most vendors disappointed. Agents are aware of this emotional attachment you have to your home and it’s sad to see dishonest agents take advantage of this by quoting vendors a high price to win the listing. Don’t fall victim to this tactic. The agent who deceives you with the price is often the worst agent and they will not get you the highest price for your home because if they deceived you once they will deceive you again when selling. The agent you choose is by far the most important decision you will ever make when selling your home because the agent’s skill level, and not the price they quote you, will determine the price you receive.
