The architectural mullet a cut above

H

eritage renovations in densely populated urban contexts are a dime a dozen these days. Maximising the yield and opportunity of a block through a smart extension is usually a primary objective while maintaining respect for the original frontage. It’s an approach I like to refer to as an architectural mullet – business in the front, party in the back. Highbury Grove House in Melbourne’s innersuburban Prahran – recently transformed by RITZ&GHOUGASSIAN – is defined by a street frontage of Federation-style cottages that are set in orthogonal rows and folded in among leafy suburb gardens. The “business in the front”. The architects have addressed the building’s laneway that runs along its northern side by

creating an architectural envelope that orientates the house to the north while maintaining privacy. They’ve partly achieved this by using a single material that has been applied with gusto to the entire new envelope – elegantly proportioned concrete blockwork. The distinctive character and ornate form of the original house are expressed as a crisp silhouette that sits in perfect tension with the heritage facade. Spotted gum boards replace a decaying timber flooring structure, and original fireplaces, previously neglected, were cleaned up and new hearths placed at their feet. Then there is the all-important “party in the back”. “The connection between the heritage architecture and the new addition is expressed as a singular moment cast in shadow,” explain

Gilad Ritz and Jean-Paul Ghougassian, founders of the studio in charge of the design. “The user is squeezed into close contact with concrete walls, causing shortness of breath before a step up into a large hollow volume of open air and light. A catharsis for the senses.” The new extension is clearly defined by heavyset concrete blockwork walls. Two overlapping planes – the first running the length of the site, sitting below the second that runs perpendicular to the first – rest on one another to delineate the rooms that make up the extension, such as living, dining, kitchen, bedroom and en suite. “The apertures between the walls create framed views outwards to neighbouring trees or to [the] courtyard garden of swamp banksia and Australian tree ferns,” the architects say.

TOM BLACHFORD

The floor is finished in burnished concrete, the perfect foundation for the masonry composition. As a subtle link to the flooring in the front of the house, spotted gum joinery and pivot doors interrupt the blockwork walls, adding warmth. The grain of the timber verticals add to the cinematic quality of the overall space. Highbury Grove House expertly offsets the ethereal medium of light and air against the heaviness and solidity of concrete walls. The changing sunlight dances across a tightly edited spectrum of surfaces. It’s a proper oldfashioned party of light, proportion and materials, delivering one of the best-looking architectural mullets I’ve seen in ages. yellowtrace.com.au

t first the plaque on the Audi R8 RWS Coupe was hugely intimidating – 1 of 999. Surely this could only mean that this was the first car built in a very limited-run and thus much more valuable than my life, or even my licence. The result was that I spent my first day driving this lairy, scary version of Audi’s fastest and most furious super car as if it were made of Ming vases and powered by pandas on treadmills. And, that’s why I was slightly annoyed when I found that all 999 of these numbered RWS (Rear Wheel Series) Audis have the same “1 of ” badge. I felt like I’d been taken for a ride, but at least it was in a surprisingly nice car. While it looks like an escapee from yet another Star Wars movie, with its sharp red stripes on fighter-white paint, the R8 is surprisingly easy, even smooth and quiet, to pilot when driven daintily. Obviously, I was a little more adventurous after that, determined to find out what makes this $299,500 RWS special, and why it costs $67,500 less than the standard, “1 of as many as we can

sell” R8 coupes. The difference, it seems, is what they’ve left out. All previous sporty Audis have been quattro, or all-wheel drive, and thus notionally safer – or at least grippier – than other sports cars with rearwheel-drive only. That means they get to throw away a lot of unnecessary parts, and this RWS variant is 50 kilograms lighter as well as cheaper. It still gets the standard R8’s riotous V10 engine, making 397kW and 540Nm, but with two fewer wheels providing grip at launch it’s slightly slower to 100km/h – 3.7 seconds. Top speed remains a hilarious 320km/h. What makes this R8 special, however, is the way it corners, or drifts – if you use all that power to get those big rear tyres to break traction. Doing silly, slidey, sideways things is what big, rear-wheel-drive cars are good at, but you’d really want to try out this R8’s party tricks on a track. It could be a bit louder, should be with this much engine behind your ears, but refined is Audi’s thing. So this RWS is not unique, but it is the best R8 that Audi has ever made.

For sale Agent: Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty, Carol Carter 0414 760 305 With space to park 20 cars, this home is one for the car enthusiast. It also has glass walled garages, so you can see your cars from outside. This should also make the process of deciding which one to drive today a lot easier.
