ame architects undoubtedly offer a certain cachet. But when the architect in question also happens to be the late Harry Seidler, arguably one of Australia’s best known and an industry icon, then the house is likely to come in for more than the usual attention. That is the case with this split-level concrete and steel house, built high on a cliff in Hunters Hill on Sydney’s North Shore, with enviable prospects of the harbour and city skyline. “It’s been a drawcard,” says Belle Property

agent Simon Harrison. “The opportunity to buy a piece of architectural history [designed by] a very well-renowned architect has certainly garnered a lot of interest.” For Marcus Lloyd-Jones, it’s not the architect’s name that is most crucial when it comes to buying and living in a house. Rather, it’s the joy of living everyday in a building that is bespoke and individual. “It’s the beauty of the space they have created,” says Lloyd-Jones, who runs specialist architecture real estate agency Modern House.
“That everyday enjoyment of light, space, volumes, angles, is often unique.” The Vienna-born Seidler has been recognised as one of Australia’s leading proponents of modernist architecture. Although built later in his career in 1996, the Francis Street property – also known as Gilhotra House after the original owners – features some of the design hallmarks for which he was celebrated. These include its simple rectangular geometry, soaring ceilings and expansive volume, as well as the rough concrete masonry and floor-to-

ceiling glass walls. In contrast, the house also sports a pair of dramatic, opposing wave-shaped steel roofs, similar to the curved top of the Aquatic Centre in Sydney. Unsurprisingly, Harrison says he has received strong interest from architects looking at the property as a potential family home. “For the right buyer, the house will resonate,” he says. “Often they are a premium buyer because of the significance and history of the property.” Lloyd-Jones says owners of architecturally important properties have a duty to maintain the spirit of the original design. “In passing these houses into the hands of the next custodians, there is that deeper understanding not only of the enjoyment of the house but the understanding of the longevity of the design.’’
