For some, this has been a pandemic of opportunity. Melbourne fashion designer Helen O’Connor harnessed the moment. She is well known for creating Thurley – the much-loved label of flirty lace and luxurious flourishes, which was her baby for 15 years. O’Connor departed Thurley in 2019 and soon after, it was no longer. I’d know – I’ve worn O’Connor’s designs all my life and went to the last sale, to ensure I acquired a final piece. O’Connor returns with a new ready-to-wear line alongside bridal, which, as women who have worn her previous creations will attest to, promises to be something special. ●

Stay a while Swish hotels, including some freshly launched, deliver a holiday experience close to home. Wo r d s JA N E R O C CA

HYATT-CENTRIC

Melbourne’s newest hotel, Hyattcentric, is for those seeking modern chic. This is where curated hotel life leans into the best of the city’s laneway culture that inspired it. It is the first of its kind in Australia, with the chic Hyatt-centric brand also operating in cities like New York

and Madrid. Celebrate local coffee at the ground-level Allie Lane and take in bay views at TOMA restaurant, whose dishes are inspired by the city’s culinary excellence. The infinity pool is a standout, as is the guest gym. Hyatt-centric is all about the bespoke point of difference. ● 25 Downie Street, Melbourne

This hotel’s Soak It In Stay Later package includes a two-night stay with $150 hotel credit for in-room movies and dining options, and a bottle of wine on arrival. MARRIOTT HOTEL DOCKLANDS

QUINCY HOTEL MELBOURNE

The Marriott Hotel Docklands has just opened, bringing with it a resortstyle, five-star flourish. The design by DKO Architecture is inspired by its waterfront position, and yachts inform its curvaceous exterior. It comes with a rooftop infinity pool and fabulous views of Melbourne. There are four food spots here, including Archer’s for local produce and Sunset House – the best place to watch the sun go down.

Inspired by a chic south-east Asian aesthetic, the Quincy is all about bright modern furnishings and large beds. Interior colours of gold, red and blue tap into a positive mood. The rooms are compact yet filled with all you need. There are three restaurants in the hotel. Salted Egg is where you head for chilli scrambled eggs with crab meat, and Sing Sing chimes into bubble tea mania. The rooftop bar and pool is a drawcard.

COVER STORY

It’s a beautiful life Fashion designer Helen O’Connor has emerged with another label that reflects fresh optimism.

DOM A IN REV IEW

I

t took stepping away from the fashion industry for Melbourne designer Helen O’Connor to realise her life wasn’t complete without a creative process. After 15 years at the helm of her trail-blazing international label Thurley, she walked away in 2019, a year before the brand went into administration, leaving behind an empire she built made of lace, peplum and modern bohemian silhouettes. She’s back with another new label and a ready-towear line – Helen O’Connor Eclipse – that rides off the back of Helen O’Connor Bridal she launched in March last year. Eclipse leans on an ’80s nostalgia, and is statement dressing with clean lines. In her collection, lace is replaced with dupion, Italian Lurex and jacquard, hand-dyed in Australia.

“I went with my gut designing this collection. My hand-draping is how I could distinguish myself from everyone in this field.”

“I needed to find a healing process after I left Thurley and didn’t think I’d start a new brand so soon,” O’Connor says. There was no sabbatical to the other side of the world to find her purpose or a mountain retreat to switch off – instead, O’Connor threw herself into family life and just got on with it. Together with her husband Trent Alexander, she found herself more present than ever. The days of a full-time nanny were long behind her (O’Connor was designing nine collections a year around the clock at the peak of Thurley when her son Lachie, now aged 4, was born). Her daughter, now aged 17 months, has had a completely different experience of her mother’s work and home life juggle. “When I started Thurley, I was young, hopeful and a rather naive university graduate,” O’Connor says. “Going into it this time around, I had my eyes wide open and was aware of how much it really takes to establish a brand and keep it going on your terms.” A short stint at home saw her get “itchy fingers” and a keenness to start designing again. “Bridal was a refuge for me and a way of keeping the craft alive,” she says. “I wanted to bring the business back to Australia. I was also working at a slower pace than I was used to. I went from designing 20 bridal dresses to 30 and then 40 to doing a photo shoot on Chelsea beach and posting the dresses to Instagram. The response was fantastic.” Designing collections around the clock wore her down, as did the pressure to expand Thurley collections at a rapid rate (the company was backed by powerbroker Pete Lew). Life felt like one big never-ending deadline. “I was always on the chase, and I couldn’t sustain myself at that pace,” she says.

Now the Helen O’Connor RTW collection is her rebirth – pitched to the cocktail and evening wear hour, and bridesmaids seeking a “wow” dress that won’t upstage the bride. She’s tapped into a new way of delivering evening gowns where dupion is her queen, colour is brighter and bolder than ever, and elegant draping is her new signature. “I went with my gut designing this collection,” she says. “My hand-draping is how I could distinguish myself from everyone in this field. Buyers wanted cleaner lines, but I just can’t do ’90s Calvin Klein, so I found my own way of doing things that was reflective of me.” O’Connor says she is all about bringing back the party dress – it’s her way of channelling optimism and hope. The RTW collection is filled with pastel hues in limoncello and peppermint and bright pops of flamingo pink and emerald green, selling between $300 and $500 a dress. “Everyone identifies me with lace,” O’Connor says, smiling. “But I don’t think people are ready for it just yet.” With a focus on local manufacturing and keeping the crafts of beading, embellishment and handdyeing in Australia, O’Connor says consumers want transparency and to know they’re supporting Australian jobs. Driving from her studio in Fitzroy to manufacturers in Tullamarine is now part of her daily grind – often with the kids in the back seat. “I meet with the makers and am glad I could bring the production back to Australia,” O’Connor says. “Sending fashion items to China in a DHL express package is a soulless experience; knowing and seeing your makers is so much more nourishing. It makes you appreciate what goes into a garment.”

So, what is O’Connor doing differently this time around? Absolutely everything. “I had my second child in lockdown, and I can honestly say I don’t remember many milestones with Lachie because I was never around. I wasn’t present when I was home because I was always worried or stressed about work. It’s been an interesting comparison, and that’s been the biggest change in me,” she says. A supportive husband has made her fashion reincarnation all the more reassuring. “I adore my family life, but to balance me, I needed that connection to fashion. There was a part of me that was missing. Trent could see I wasn’t happy and knew how important it was for me.” Prominent customers – including actor Sienna Miller, supermodel Miranda Kerr and film icon Michelle Pfeiffer – adored O’Connor’s past designs. Although taking part in Fashion Week and celebrity endorsements play a part in a brand’s success, O’Connor has learnt not to burn herself out. She plans to launch an accessories line down the track and has just signed a deal to distribute her range in the US via retailer BHLDN. “I’m one of those people who always try to people please everyone, and my husband reminds me to be true to myself,” she says. “I always found a lot of pressure to design into every category and sell to everyone and found it hard to be a diverse, multifaceted brand. At the end of the day, it compromises your message and the essence of who you are. “Right now, I’m back to square one. I am working with kids in tow, and it is what it is.” ● HELEN O’CONNOR ECLIPSE \ Collection launches March 2. Bridal is available now. ● helenoconnorbridal.com

FEATURE HOUSE HAMPTON \ 62 ORLANDO STREET 4

When Newry was built in 1904, Hampton was a hamlet with market gardens. The railway was handy – especially to Newry, five minutes’ walk from Hampton station – and downtown Melbourne was far away. That was how the locals liked it. These days, they love it. It didn’t take the work-from-home revolution to send Hampton’s prestige soaring, just a fresh appreciation of coastal life and excellent schools such as Hampton Primary, St Mary’s and St Leonard’s. But in 1975, when the current owners bought Newry for $29,000, this suburb was known as “Hampton Oh”. As in “I thought you lived in Brighton, but you’re in Hampton? Oh”. Shabby and creaky, the weatherboard house was a reflection of Hampton’s modest status. That didn’t bother Newry’s people, who loved their deep, north-easterly garden and easy walk to the bay. About 20 years ago they undertook a major renovation that garnered Newry a pool, deck, new first floor and a wealth of comforts such as double glazing, ducted heating and a shaded pergola. The final touches were completed in 2020 and include electric vehicle charging in the garage. Smart and spacious, its Edwardian leadlight and fireplaces all a-gleam, the house is now a picture-perfect family home. A side entry leads to a hall serving three original double bedrooms, two with wardrobes and the third with a desk and fireplace. Close by are a powder room and a white, fully tiled bathroom with twin basins and a walk-in shower.
