t was many years after I married into the family that I began to learn the story of Mindla and Kubush Horowitz. My husband fondly recalled the bedtime stories his adored Pop told his grandchildren; epic adventures of a grand Polish circus and its colourful clowns and how they outwitted the Nazis. Stories of how he rescued his beautiful bride from a filthy Russian prison and how they lived happily ever after in Australia. But these were no fairytales. My husband knew the skeleton of his grandparents’ story, but I wanted the flesh and bones. By the time I came into the family Pop was long gone and Nanna never spoke about the past. The family didn’t want to prod in case it upset her. But as the clock of Nanna’s life ticked, I felt an increasing need to know her story, for our children to know their heritage. At the risk of upsetting Nanna, we needed to talk. It was 2014 and Nanna had just celebrated her 94th birthday. She was living at the Montefiore nursing home in St Kilda. We knew not to bring gifts of cake or chocolates when we visited because she wanted to “keep her figure”, but she loved lipstick and nail polish, and she loved to chat while painting her nails. So, armed with the latest fancy nail polish and a rusting tin of photographs my mother-in-law had rescued from Nanna’s rubbish, we began.

An epic story of resilience I

Author Sue Smethurst shares the journey that led to a book on her family’s extraordinary escape from the Nazis and pioneering role in Australian television. Each visit followed the same routine. One by one we’d go through the little black and white images together while she painted her nails. “Nanna, who is this?” I’d gently ask. “And, where was this picture taken?” “Vhy do you vant to know?” she’d say in her thick Polish accent. She was more interested in talking about her beloved “Collingvood” but I’d draw the conversation back, peeling away the layers of her life. After the nails were set, we’d head to the dining room for lunch where we were joined by her friends. When my notepad appeared, we’d go through the same charade. “Vhy do you vant to know?” she’d ask. But then came a lightbulb moment. “I’m not special, vhat about her, and her, and her,” she said, pointing to each of the dear weathered faces sitting opposite. “Ask them, too.” Although the past was painful, Mindla wasn’t necessarily traumatised by telling it, she just didn’t think her story was unique because every one of these precious elderly men and women sitting around the table had miraculously beaten Hitler too. And so, we kept talking. Nanna passed away in 2015. Rather than her death being the end of the story, it was really only the beginning. She believed she and a much-loved sister Jadzia were the only members of their family who survived the Holocaust.
Five years later, and some 80 years after Hitler invaded Poland, we have met a family we never knew existed and uncovered heartbreaking secrets. It has taken us on a dark journey through the Warsaw ghetto, the Dachau concentration camp and into the extermination camp at Treblinka. It took us inside a Russian prison where Nanna escaped the horrors of Hitler by running into the arms of Stalin. Mindla and Kubush Horowitz arrived in Australia on March 14, 1949. As their ship sailed in that day, they made a vow to never speak of the past again. “No good comes from looking back,” Pop said. If I had the chance to chat with the man who became one of the first clowns on Australian television on GTV 9’s Tarax Show, I’d disagree. What a year it has been for husband-and-wife team Elliot and Louise Gorham, who relocated their young family and furniture-making business from Melbourne to Yackandandah in north-east Victoria. “The move was a business decision and a lifestyle decision,” Louise says.

There’s something earthy and honest about the furniture that Nick McDonald creates. Inspired by Danish and Japanese design simplicity, the selftaught maker infuses his Made by Morgen range with a warm timelessness. “It’s imperative that what we do is made to last,” McDonald says. After working as a carpenter and building foreman, he discovered his interest in furniture when he was renovating his warehouse apartment. Much of his inspiration comes from an overseas trip and a stint training with Danish furniture makers Onecollection. McDonald says he was instantly drawn to their minimalist style. “The hardest pieces to nail are the ones that are simple,” he says. Returning to Melbourne, he opened Made by Morgen in 2014. His first piece, the Lil bedside table, which he made for a friend, is still one of his most popular designs. Technically he has matured and is known for his subtle detailing and exposed mortise-and-tenon joinery. Despite the challenges of 2020, McDonald has had a busy year with orders and is heartened by the wave of local support. He has relocated to a bigger premises in Brunswick and, importantly, he and his partner are expecting a child soon. McDonald is currently working on a new range and plans to launch a joint collection – Morgen and Sandford – in the future. Spending time at home has made people realise the value of furniture that lasts longer, he says. “Let’s hope people don’t forget the importance of looking local and staying local.”

Of course, there has been a lot of interest in his office desks recently. When the showroom is open, visitors can watch the team at work through a window. Harper believes in these tumultuous times people are searching for longevity in their furniture.
George Harper was a late convert to furnituremaking after leaving a desk job to study furniture design in 2007. From working in his backyard shed, Harper founded Tide Design and now, with a team of five, runs a beautiful showroom and workshop in Huntingdale. Inspired by mid-century design and Scandinavian aesthetics, Tide has evolved along organic, elegant lines with a distinctive Australian character. “Our pieces are made with a lot of care and attention and we want people to love them,” Harper says. Although Harper is mostly occupied on the design front these days, he still makes the prototypes himself. Tide has a concise range of ecofriendly timeless timber pieces made to order. Think elegant dining tables, interesting chair designs including the cosy Brixton armchair and storage units such as the ever-popular Tana shelves.

With a combination of backgrounds in design (Elliot) and comedy writing (Louise), the couple founded Apparentt in 2016. Their furniture is smart but also beautiful and functional. The Esteem range employs steam-bending techniques to produce flowing curves. Not surprisingly, business has swung towards the residential side recently and Gorham says design lovers around Australia are seeking them out. They are soon to launch a new range – possibly called Cusp – and plan to open a showroom. They also have a custom-made range Steel Road, use sustainably sourced timber and plan to source more Australian timbers in the future. Gorham believes the pandemic will inspire a groundswell of support for local businesses. ● apparentt.com.au
After studying design in France and Scotland, Anne-Claire Petre moved to Australia where she worked first in Adelaide and then Melbourne. In 2012, she finally set up her own studio where she designs a sleek range of contemporary furniture. As well as good design, sustainability is important for Petre so she uses materials with a low environmental impact. She enjoys a close relationship with the local craftspeople who make her furniture. Over the years, Petre has created a range of beautifully detailed items, including an elegant sofa, versatile ottomans and envy-inducing office desks. With the current pandemic, she believes people are going to invest more seriously in their homes. “Working from home, people will want to make their home more pleasant and practical – and define space in a different way because not everyone has a spare room for an office.” Her experience in interior design shines through in her new studio in West Melbourne where her range is attractively displayed with local art and homewares to offer lots of inspiration. ● ● anacastudio.com.au
