You could almost badge this a nostalgia edition, thanks to Ronan Keating, the Irish singer who became doubly famous beyond his hitmaking band Boyzone with the tune When You Say Nothing At All from the Notting Hill movie. Hugh Grant pursued Julia Roberts on-screen to Keating’s soundtrack; as for Keating’s love life, he later became smitten with an Australian, whom he married. The former X Factor and The Voice judge knows Melbourne well. He speaks candidly ahead of the Melbourne leg of his band’s tour, featuring songs we have been making up and breaking up to for 25 years. ●

FIRST PERSON

““I am Christie Johnson” … and I’m a weather forecaster I’ve been with the weather bureau for about

15 years. A lot of people are weather nerds and know they want to do it right from the start. But actually I wanted to be a doctor. I got into medicine at uni and did two-and-a-half years, but I really wasn’t enjoying it, so I took a year off to consider my options. I switched to science, and did a subject in meteorology with a funny American lecturer. I absolutely fell in love with meteorology; it was just fascinating. I’ve always enjoyed maths so I liked that side of it – seeing how you could describe how the weather works with mathematical modelling and equations. But it wasn’t just maths, it was learning about cool stuff, like tropical cyclones and thunderstorms. One of the great things about the job is that you

do feel like you are making a difference in people’s lives. We’re very conscious, for example, when we’re in drought conditions that we need to be careful about forecasting rain if we’re not sure. We also do a lot of aviation forecasting, so we have to be mindful of what the criteria are for the planes to be able to land or not land. We know millions of dollars are riding on whether or not there’s going to be fog at Melbourne Airport, and if the planes can land or whether they need to divert to Sydney or somewhere else. These days we largely rely on computer modelling, and we get models from all around the world. Our local models run out of our supercomputer here at the Bureau of Meteorology. There are different pressures, so in summer it’s

fire forecasting, and thunderstorms are the big things. In winter it’s things like frost for the farmers, and everyone’s interested in the snow season. You have to obviously get your head around sometimes being wrong, and taking the flak for that. I found when I first started I got really stressed and I was worried about getting it wrong. As you get more experienced you realise that there are going to be some situations where it’s going to be really hard, and you may as well just roll the dice. You can never do it 100 per cent correctly. Our verification statistics are very good and improving all the time, but you’re never going to be 100 per cent and you just have to be OK with that. ●

COVER STORY

Pop heart-throb Ronan Keating recalls the ’90s, his love of Melbourne and giving thanks.

T

hey’ve sung with Pavarotti in Italy, were at the top of the charts with the Spice Girls in the ’90s and now, after 25 years together, Irish boy band Boyzone is calling it a day with a world tour that sees them perform in Australia as a group for the first time in their touring history. “I can’t believe we have never played Australia in all the years we have been doing this,” says Ronan Keating, lead singer of the ’90s boy band that sold more than 25 million albums worldwide and was known for their hits Love Me For a Reason, Words, and Father and Son. “It took us two years to work out what we wanted to do with the band. At the end of the day, we know we’re lucky to have had 25 years in the business – bands like ours don’t make that timespan.” Keating says a world tour – on their terms – is the ultimate final salute, and a way of thanking fans for the memories. “It’s a bonus to be able to write this final chapter ourselves,” says Keating, who has taken a break from morning breakfast radio in London to tour. Their new album Thank You & Goodnight sees them collaborate with Ed Sheeran (Because) and Gary Barlow (Love) while paying a special tribute to the late band member Stephen Gately through the new track I Can Dream. The song itself was found on an original demo recorded by Gately for his solo album in 2002 and was reworked in an ode to the performer who died of an undiagnosed heart condition in 2009 at the age of 33.

“We never thought we’d be as successful as we became, but we kept pushing ourselves time and again,” Keating says. “Whether it was when we had our first No.1 single or No.1 album, we kept moving the goal posts after every achievement. From our first magazine cover to being on Top of the Pops, hosting the MTV Awards and winning many accolades, it was a crazy good time. “To be part of a ’90s pop movement with bands like Take That and the Spice Girls has been a great ride for us all.” Keating, who travels to Australia three times a year with his Australian wife Storm (a former producer on the Australian X-Factor he met in 2010 and started dating a year later) and their one-year-old son Cooper, says he’s a big fan of Melbourne. “I love the people in Melbourne, I have great memories of being at the Melbourne Cup Carnival,” he says. “There’s not many cities around the world that have the cool factor. [In Melbourne] there’s great coffee shops, Michelin star-rated restaurants in alleyways that you didn’t know existed and a real energy and coolness that is unique compared to anywhere else in the world.” His gruelling tour schedule means there’s less chance to party when he’s in town, if merely for the stamina required for each show. “It’s a two-hour show and we play 23 songs. It’s the biggest thing I have ever done and I am singing every single song,” he says. “I take one hour to warm up, and an hour before that I am in lock down on my own. I drink honey, ginger and lemon teas and sip it slowly to get my voice warmed up. “I can’t party after the show. Once I’m off that stage I go straight to bed. If I lose my voice the show doesn’t happen.” But if there’s one thing Keating would change about his past, it would be to chill out a little. “I took myself very seriously in the ’90s,” the 41-year-old recalls. “As a young kid aged 16, I wanted to be successful. I wanted the band I was

in to be successful and I wanted to be seen as someone you could respect. I worked very hard at that, and because of that I didn’t get to enjoy my time as much as I probably should have. I was probably too serious for my own good. “I have learnt to take everything with a pinch of salt, I don’t take myself too seriously any more. I still have an amazing work ethic, that’s something that will never change.” After the tour, Keating will return to London to be with his family. He also has three children with his first wife Yvonne Connolly – Jack, Missy and Ali – who live in Ireland. “I would rather not be on the road, it’s a gruelling life, but it’s what I do,” he says. “But it’s inevitable I’ll be on the road touring for a long time yet. I have just finished working on my next solo album but, in an ideal world, I would love to sit at home with Storm and Cooper. But after this, I’ll be knuckling down with radio work, some acting and TV work. You have to keep it diverse.” ● BOYZONE: THE FAREWELL TOUR \ Playing Margaret Court Arena, Melbourne, April 3 ● ticketek.com.au

cream tea, also known as Devonshire tea, consists of a good strong cup of tea with scones, jam and clotted cream. In my recent trip to the UK I had a lot of cream teas. While I didn’t make it to Devon to try the original, I had many in Bath and Bristol. Needless to say, it really is the clotted cream that makes the scones so special. In this recipe I’ve used whipped cream due to the unavailability here of clotted cream. I have also used spelt flour in this recipe as it gives the scones a much lighter texture and also has lots of benefits of vitamins and minerals, and I have included buttermilk as I find that the acid in the buttermilk helps the baking powder work more effectively, making it rise better. The secret to making good scones is to not handle them too much and keep the dough sticky. Enjoy them as fresh as possible with a good cup of tea. ●

Spelt scones Ingredients (makes 8 scones)

Method Heat the oven to 180 degrees and line a baking tray with baking paper. ■ Sift the flour, baking powder and bicarb of soda into a large mixing bowl. Stir in the salt and sugar. ■ Grate the butter into the bowl, using a coarse grater. Rub the butter into the dry ingredients using your fingertips, until the butter is incorporated evenly and the mixture resembles sand. ■ Make a well in the centre, and pour in the cream and buttermilk. Stir in gently using a spatula. ■ Add in the orange zest and raisins. ■ Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead very gently, just to bring the dough together. ■ Flatten the dough gently into a disk about 2.5cm to 4cm high. Cut the circle into 8 scones. ■ Arrange the scones on the baking sheet, and bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown on top. ■ Allow to cool slightly before serving with whipped cream and jam. ●

o attract more partgoers to the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix, organisers of the four-day event have cranked up the cuisine on offer, added a pamper station and created menus pitched at those looking for a trackside sweetener. The exclusive Paddock Club – motorsport’s answer to The Birdcage at Flemington Racecourse during the Melbourne Cup Carnival – is where luxury reaches its peak. It has the advantage of a rooftop deck – an ideal place to socialise with friends and watch the race with a fabulous view – because remember that’s what you’re there to do, right? A three-day pass to The Lounge (within the Paddock Club) starts at $2495 per person and

includes canapes, entertainment and bar access; for those looking to eat more substantially, there’s a seated dining room, which starts from $4750 over the three main race days. The Bentley Suite comes with access to your own pamper room, views over the garages and pit lane, access to a pit-lane walk, an all-day grazing menu with interactive food stations, beverages and a car park, too. That racy package starts at $4995 a pop. “We want to turn up the glamour and give people an experience they might not expect to find at a grand prix,” executive pastry chef of the Atlantic Group Lisa Van Zanten says. Van Zanten says the theme of the 30,000 sweets she will make – for the Paddock Club alone – will be nostalgia.

“Even if you have people who don’t want to eat the extra calories, they’re drawn in because the sweets look so beautiful,” she says. Van Zanten will re-create childhood favourites, from the Yogo dessert (which comes in a modified adult form), to a take on a Bounty chocolate bar and her version of the Cherry Ripe lamington. “It’s nice to remind people about food they may have had as a child,” Van Zanten says. Jeanette Mako, the head chef of Food & Desire, says a new trend in dining trackside is the interactive food station, with a grazing menu that allows guests to pick and choose as they wish. “We’re about changing things up and capturing the culture of Melbourne through food,” Mako says. “Interactive food stations are where you see the food made in front of you – people become aware of what happens behind the scenes, [so] it’s not plated up and delivered to your table. feeling connected to those who create it for you.” Grand prix ambassador Natalia Kalinowski says it’s the year of the woman at the track. “With the executive pastry chef at Atlantic being female [Lisa Van Zanten], it’s proof you don’t need guys running corporate events just for men,” Kalinowski says. The success of spring racing, which has attracted a party set that appreciates the sport but loves the party if not more, is reflected at this year’s Albert Park race circuit. Organisers have added a beauty bar at the track, where Jade K – one of Australia’s top celebrity make-up artists – is available for complimentary touch-ups for fans, between watching the hot laps. And lads needn’t feel left out with the Jimmy Rods Barbershop, where a gold coin donation to the My Room children’s cancer charity, in exchange for a spruce-up, is welcomed. ●

But as fate has it, Australia’s Human Nature have defied the odds. They’ve sold more than 2.5 million albums, scored 19 Top 40 hits and opened for Michael Jackson and Celine Dion – all while signed to the same record label, Sony Music.

In the ultimate tribute to their legacy, they are embarking on a national tour, performing all the hits of the three decades – including some from their 13th studio album, Romance of the Jukebox, which includes All You Need Is Love, Little More Love and Crazy Love. “This group is greater than we are as individuals,” says Andrew Tierney, whose younger brother Mike is one of the quartet. “There is something special about the four of us together, and getting

He says relocating 10 years ago to the US was a hard decision to make, but necessary for the band’s ongoing success. He recalls playing at Atlantic City’s Tropicana Casino in 2008 to see if they’d survive in the US market. They had released Get Ready a year earlier, which saw them sing duets with Smoky Robinson, Martha Reeves and Mary Wilson of Supremes fame. “We went there to see how Americans would respond to four white Aussies singing Motown songs,” Tierney says. “We asked Smoky what he thought of us doing it, [and] he said he writes music for all people to embrace and

n the glitzy world of show homes where each new home can seem more voluminous and opulent than the last, the Ashburton 35 is a breath of fresh (sea) air. Like all Carter Grange homes, it’s been custom designed for an individual client’s family and their block, in this case a smaller corner site under 500 square metres that doesn’t fit standard plans by project builders. Carter Grange head of sales and marketing Vince Bellier says the double-storey design not only realises this client’s vision for a luxury contemporary home with a Hamptons feel but, at $624,162, it won’t break the bank. “It’s a 35-square home that feels so much larger with all the features of much bigger homes – four large bedrooms, two living zones, a spacious main suite, a large study, butler’s pantry and seamlessly integrated indoor-outdoor living.” As with all Carter Grange homes it has an effortless and convenient flow – the garage connects to living through the laundry, butler’s pantry and kitchen with a powder room nearby. Upstairs the family bathroom has a twin vanity and separate powder room – a smart solution for family living. Outside, the Hamptons-inspired brick-and-timber facade features bay windows, and a porch with brick piers. Inside, Carter Grange’s interior arm, Byron Interiors, has translated the client’s aspirations into a subtle palette of coastal tones and features. These include wide French oak floorboards, a blue grey vertical timbered feature wall and a light, fresh kitchen with marbled splashback and white stone benchtops. Hydronic heating, double glazing, two sets of triple stacker doors and a fullyfitted barbecue area are all included. ● LIZ McLACHLAN

SALLY BUCKLEY

LEIGH HENNINGHAM

S

ally Buckley enrolled at Mentone Grammar for her VCE studies and quickly developed a passion for legal studies. Today she’s a lawyer at the Court of Appeal, working for judges in the criminal jurisdiction. “I hadn’t considered life after school until one of my teachers pulled me aside after a legal studies class and asked me if I’d considered studying law,” says Buckley. “He planted the seed and fostered my interest in criminal law. He’d print out newspaper articles for me about the life of a criminal barrister or about an interesting murder trial. I remember trips to Barwon Prison to speak with inmates and to hear their stories as part of our legal studies experience. From then I was set on studying law at the University of Melbourne.” Buckley chose criminal law because of its “human” element. “Criminal law is about human beings doing things in contravention of the law and the state prosecuting them. In essence, it’s an individual person against the power of the entire state. That inherent imbalance of power speaks to the real need for a person to have effective legal representation,” she says. “Many of those who commit crimes are disadvantaged. As a criminal lawyer, you have to delve into the underpinning reasons why people do what they do – not as an excuse, but to add context to their story.” Buckley joined Mentone Grammar in 2006. A talented student, she wanted to spend her VCE years at a school that would challenge her academically. She was one of the first female students at the former boys’ school and became the first female head prefect. “I felt very comfortable at Mentone Grammar from day one. Throughout my time there I enjoyed the support to help me realise what I was good at and what I wanted to do. The school nurtured my abilities and passions,” she says. “There’s a lovely sense of community at Mentone Grammar. Students were nurtured by teaching staff. People wanted you to be your best and to do your best, within your capabilities. There wasn’t academic pressure, rather the various talents of

SA L LY B U C K L E Y

students were encouraged, be it academically, in sport, music or drama. Teachers knew their students well and gave every individual the attention they needed.” After graduating from Mentone Grammar in 2007, Buckley studied a bachelor of arts, majoring in criminology and advanced French, and then a Juris Doctor at the University of Melbourne. After working as an associate to a judge in the criminal jurisdiction of the County Court, she spent three months as a volunteer with the Capital Appeals Project in New Orleans. The not-for-profit organisation provides legal representation and assists prisoners on death row who are appealing their conviction or death sentence. “I interviewed clients on death row, took their families for visits and did legal research for the

attorneys working with the clients,” says Buckley. “It was a confronting experience, but it highlighted to me how fair and just our system in Victoria is.” Buckley also worked as a lawyer in the Indictable Crime Team at Victoria Legal Aid before taking up her current role at the Court of Appeal. In her spare time, Buckley is a yoga enthusiast and enjoys travelling. She also plays keyboard in a band, describing their sound as “zany and disjointed poppy punk”. Buckley believes her learnings from her days at Mentone Grammar have placed her in good stead for a lengthy career in the courtroom. “I remember the focus on manners, courtesy towards others and treating people the way you’d like to be treated – important life lessons,” Buckley says. ● SARAH MARINOS

I work with the prep to year 6 girls. I follow the science curriculum and embed it within a STEM philosophy and I work with other teachers to support the integration of ICT in the classroom. I ensure the learning students do in my classroom fits with what they learn in other classrooms. This year I also worked with some girls who play chess because chess is about developing analytical thinking and that is what the STEM philosophy is about.

WHO INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A TEACHER?

My mum was a primary school teacher and she was always very strong on what the child needs and finding creative ways to help a child learn. But at the centre of everything she did was an element of fun because she believed you can’t learn unless you feel safe in the environment. WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ST CATHERINE’S?

I did a bachelor of arts and a bachelor of teaching and did a science major. My first job included a science program run through Monash University and I became besotted with learning how to integrate science into the curriculum. I realised science was at the core of everything I taught so when I saw the role highlighting STEM areas, I jumped at it and joined the school in 2017.

and what is synthetic and what is natural. It coincided with the removal of plastic bags from supermarkets, so we looked at plastic and its impact. The school community donated offcuts of fabric and the girls designed their own reusable bag from dads’ shirts and old doonas. Meanwhile, the year 6 girls chose a star constellation and used that as a model to build a circuit with LED lights. They created a dark house with their constellations and lit up the night sky. WHAT MEMORABLE MOMENTS HAVE YOU HAD

WHY ARE STEM SUBJECTS IMPORTANT FOR

AT ST CATHERINE’S SO FAR?

YOUNGER CHILDREN?

It was exciting to be told I was going to be a full-time STEM teacher with my own STEM room – there’s no carpet so we can get messy and be real scientists!

Research shows children as young as five start to disengage from mathematics because they think they can’t do it, so we need to get children enthusiastic about science and mathematics before they switch off. STEM promotes critical and creative thinking strategies to enable students to solve real life problems. It prepares them for a world outside school. WHAT PROJECTS AND INITIATIVES EMBED STEM IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL?

This year the year 4 girls were looking at materials

WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL?

I love cooking, sewing and gardening. The girls call me “the plant lady” because I have so many plants in my classroom. The girls have just done some fabric printing for me, too, and I’m going to use it to sew a dress for next year. ● SARAH MARINOS
