STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH WOMEN of all ages are being encouraged to talk about ovarian cancer and get to know the symptoms to help save lives.

With February being Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan said there had never been a better time to start a conversation with your grandmother, mother, daughter, aunt, niece, best friend or co-worker.

Each year about 1300 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer Australia-wide.

It is estimated 240 Queensland women will be diagnosed this year.

“It is the ninth most common cancer in Australian women, and the sixth leading cause of cancer deaths in Australian women,” she said.

“Of the gynaecological cancers (cervix, ovaries, uterus, vagina and vulva), ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death.

“In 2018, 285 women were diagnosed with ovarian cancer and sadly 206 women lost their lives to the disease in Queensland.

“But there is hope, and survival rates are growing. In Queensland, the

five-year relative survival for ovarian cancer was 49 per cent during the period 2014-2018, which is up from 37 per cent in 1982-1989.”

Ovarian cancer can happen at any age, but usually in women who have been through menopause.

Symptoms include abdominal bloating, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, frequent or urgent urination, back, abdominal or pelvic pain, constipation or diarrhoea, menstrual irregularities, tiredness, indigestion, pain during intercourse and unexplained weight loss or weight gain.

“These symptoms do not necessarily mean you have cancer – they might be caused by another health condition,” she said.

“If you have these symptoms and they are new for you, are severe or continue for more than a few weeks, it is best to arrange a check-up.”

While your doctor may perform some tests like a blood test, a CT scan or a pelvic examination, these can only show if there are any abnormalities.

“The only way to confirm a diagnosis of ovarian cancer is by taking a tissue sample (biopsy) and looking at the cells under a microscope,” Ms McMillan said.

As part of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, you can purchase a teal ribbon for Teal Ribbon Day on February 23.

Students and school making history MURRUMBA State Secondary College has changed vastly since deputy principal Alistair Watt started there as the school’s Health and Physical Education (HPE) teacher.

In 2012, there was just a handful of buildings, 324 students and 19 staff.

Now there are more than 60 learning areas, 1800 students and 136 teaching staff.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the school’s commitment to Year 7s.

When it opened in 2012 it was part of the trial of Year 7 students moving into high school, rather than primary school.

Mr Watt said his memories of the first day of school in 2012 were a little surreal.

“As a trial school for the Flying Start Program with Year 7s, we had TV crews and parliamentary people and that really sticks in the heads of those students,” Mr Watt said.

“I was the foundation

HPE teacher, setting up all the sports uniforms and facilities and gradually moved my way up to deputy principal. It was awesome – we got to select the (house) colours and students got the chance to design the logos.”

The first cohort of students finished their four-year university degrees last year and Mr Watt, who founded the school’s acclaimed Football Academy, said the success of the foundation students was not just academic.

“I wanted to give local footballers a pathway – they were leaving our area to go to other schools of excellence.

“We’re providing that same level of coaching but without the travel.

“One student who was with me in Year 8 is a paramedic, one of our Football Academy (Indiah-Paige Riley) plays overseas and was with the Matildas at the Tokyo Olympics.

Club’s charitable view on life FOURTEEN young people in the Moreton Bay Region are receiving an educational boost thanks to the dedication of the Arana VIEW Club.

President Judy Dittman said members fundraised tirelessly throughout the year to sponsor the children through the Smith Family’s Learning for Life program.

The program provides financial support to help disadvantaged families afford their children’s education, as well as access to support services and education programs.

Ms Dittman said many of the club’s fundraising events involved social activities, but the organisation, founded 60 years ago last year, also had a serious side.

“VIEW, which stands for Voice, Interests and Education of Women, is a network of close to 300 clubs and over 14,000 women throughout Australia,” Ms Dittman said.

“It’s a place for women to connect in the community, enjoy social activities and develop lasting friendships – all while supporting the work of The Smith Family.

“I always say we’re a club with heart – it’s not just about having a good time, it’s a higher purpose.”

WORK will start on a fix for a notorious Arana Hills blackspot next month.

The $2.6 million upgrade at the intersection of Plucks and South Pine roads will include new lights, anti-skid surfacing and drainage.

Eight crashes have been recorded at the intersection since 2013.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery said the upgrade would improve traffic flow and safety.

“This is a notorious stretch of downhill road, particularly when wet,” Mayor Flannery said.

Cr Constance said the intersection was the main road between homes in the west to vital services, shops and schools and the upgrade was a priority for the community.

He said the project would improve pedestrian safety and link with the upcoming Max Morton Park pedestrian connection.

Works is expected to take 20 weeks to complete, weather and construction conditions permitting.

The Arana VIEW Club – with about 120 members – celebrates its 25th anniversary in April and raises about $10,000 for The Smith Family each year.

Ms Dittman said programs officer Bonnie Simms arranged a varied suite of activities each year.

“We have outings at least once a month to places like art galleries and museums and even Parliament House,” she said.

“As well, we meet on the first Wednesday of the month at Arana Leagues Club for lunch, usually with a guest speaker.”

Sign trial puts spotlight on wildlife

New signs have been installed at 12 locations in the region. Matt Cecil from the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland hopes they will inspire motorists to slow down.

A NEW campaign aimed at protecting marsupials from motorists across the Moreton Bay Region rolled out this week.

Launched on Valentine’s Day, the campaign features giant bright yellow corflute cutouts of kangaroos and koalas, strategically placed to alert drivers they are in a wildlife corridor.

Mayor Peter Flannery said that with the traditional koala and kangaroo breeding season drawing to a close, there was an abun-

dance of young animals around the region.

“Our wildlife have been getting all loved up during breeding season, meaning our parks and forests are now teeming with joeys who are making their way out into the world, placing them at risk when it comes to the roadways,” he said The high-visibility corflute signs in the shape of koalas and kangaroos, designed by Council’s Green Infrastructure team, bear simple messages including

“Stay Alert”, “Slow Down” and “Take Care”. The material is like that used for roadwork and building site signs, meaning the signs are reflective when lit by passing headlights at night.

The signs are at 12 sites for the 10-day trial.

Launching the campaign while meeting Baby the squirrel glider and Blossom the ringtail possum at Moore Rd, Kurwongbah, Mayor Flannery said Council received more than 700 calls a year to remove de-

ceased animals from roads.

“We want to help drivers avoid animal collisions, and prevent injuries and fatalities, as well as costly insurance claims.”

Councillor Darren Grimwade (Div 11) said Council received more than 120 requests a year for more animal warning signs.

“We’ll use the data collected from both the signed and non-signed locations to see how effective this program is,” he said.

“These corflute signs are

designed to be a seasonal response to the risk of wildlife on roads during breeding and joey seasons.”

Division 7 Councillor Yvonne Barlow said she had witnessed the tragedy of animal strikes.

“We might own the land here, but they live here these little creatures – this is their home, so we need to be very careful,” she said.

Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland projects manager Matt Cecil said animal strikes re-

mained a significant issue.

“I love the shape of the signs – they’re novel, they’re new – I think they’re going to create some interest within the community,” Mr Cecil said.

Animal expert Martin Fingland from Geckoes Wildlife said the novel shapes were also sure to grab children’s attention.

“It’s often the kids that say to mum and dad, ‘hey there could be koalas along here, I’ve just seen the sign’,” Mr Fingland said.

A FEAR of not having a roof over your head is an emotion that friends Linda Hahn and Leanne Wrench know all too well.

Both have grappled with finding access to affordable and secure housing after personal circumstances saw their lives change in their later years.

Ms Hahn faced a number of health issues which forced her to stop work.

This led to losing her home and her marriage ending.

“I thought I was financially secure, and I never thought I would end up homeless, but I did,” she said.

Beloved carer retires KLUB Kallangur stalwart Roselyne Trott has retired after 21 years with the Kallangur State School outside school hours care service.

Husband Simon said his wife decided late last year to join him in retirement and had intended to farewell pupils and staff for the first weeks of the school year. “ B u t then the return to school was delayed by COVID and she’s in a highrisk category,” Mr Trott said.

He said Mrs Trott still saw many students – now grown up – in the community.

“She can’t walk down the street or go to the shopping centre without someone stopping her to say help,” he laughed.

Klub Kallangur manager Marion Crow said Mrs Trott would be missed by staff and pupils.

“She's French and taught the children and educators French songs – we always sang Happy Birthday in French,” Ms Crowe said.

“She just wanted to brighten the kids’ days.”

“The rental prices were so unaffordable, and I wondered if we would ever get

a house again. We eventually got this house here in Albany Creek, and our daughter lives with us, which does make things a little easier.”

The group is advocating for innovative housing models, regulatory reforms and the removal of financial barriers affecting housing options.

It was formed in 2019 after statistics from the previous year found more than 405,000 older women in Australia were estimated to be at risk of homelessness.

Ms Hahn said it only took one incident to change a woman’s life completely.

“Most older women are only one step away from being homeless. This could be due to lack of employment, health issues or relation-

ship breakdowns,” she said.

“Many women have taken on the role of carer for their family, so they might have gaps in their working resume, and women tend to work in lower paid jobs, which means they end up with less money in their superannuation than men.

“Then there is housing stress – rents have escalated meaning they often pay over 50 per cent of their income to cover rent.

“We are lobbying government to advocate for changes that are desperately needed to support women. With an election coming up, you can bet we will be very vocal.”

A NEW market at Lawnton aims to deliver a weekly event filled with joy and community spirit.

Convenor Sharni Fisher, who previously ran the Strathpine Flea Market, said the Lawnton Community Market brought together old favourites alongside new stallholders.

“Last year stall holders had it pretty tough with COVID and this year we’ve moved it to the Lawnton Tavern and we’re starting afresh,” Ms Fisher said.

“It’s about the community coming together, it’s really exciting.

“The tavern has been amazing.”

Ms Fisher said there were about 50 stall sites available at the new venue and almost 40 stallholders signed up for the first market in January.

“We’ve got fresh produce, gemstones, flowers, plants, a trash ’n’ treasure lane, clothing, toys, tools and an ice cream truck and coffee van,” she said.

There’s also a barbecue breakfast organised by the Tavern, facepainting and live music and Ms Fisher is keen to hear from local performers who would also like to take part.

As well as hosting paying stallholders who help cover the cost of rental at the tavern, Ms Fisher plans to offer a space at each market to a local charity.

“Any charity can have one market a year where they can come and have a free stall,” she said.

The Lawnton Community Markets are every Saturday from 6amnoon at the Lawnton Tavern.

“I don’t look at records. I do it for me,” she said. “It’s more about finishing and accomplishing it, not being the youngest or the fastest.

“You do get wrapped up in doing something like this.

It’s incredible. Sometimes I don’t realise how big (an achievement) it is.”

Thompson’s swimming record on longswims.com is impressive. The 10km Burleigh to Surfers was her first major amateur race in April 2018.

record six hours 40 minutes.

Two days later, Thompson was in the support crew for another Derwent swimmer and eight hours after that, decided to do the swim in reverse, upstream.

She started just before dark, admits to “freaking out a bit” at one point possibly through lack of sleep and feeling some stretches “lasted for ever”.

However mum Elise, a life member of ACSC, was on

the support boat and helped her daughter through.

Eleven hours and 43 minutes after jumping in, Thompson reached the New Norfolk Bridge.

“Derwent is longest in the Triple Crown and coldest,” she said, “it’s only recently become a popular swim and been included in Triple Crown. Only a handful of people have done it.

“The reward was the feeling of accomplishment.

Many people think what I do is insane, but swimming, for me, is like therapy.

“I have always loved swimming. I have a good build for it, being a little bit stockier. I’d rather swim in freezing cold temperatures than a hot pool.”

About 20 per cent of the nation’s donors have been unable to donate in recent weeks because of COVID-19.

Lifeblood's Cath Stone said the need was dire.

“It’s a real challenge for blood supplies because even in the midst of a pandemic there are still cancer patients, trauma cases, pregnant women and unborn babies who all require donated blood,” Ms Stone said.

“There is no substitute for blood.”

About 4500 planned donations are cancelled – or not attended – every day. Lifeblood encourages people to book in but, donor centres are welcoming walk-ins.

Veteran’s advocate named Dickson citizen of the year

ALBANY Creek’s John Hardgrave is still stunned after being named the Dickson Citizen of the Year.

A former member of the Australian Defence force, passionate volunteer and Veterans’ advocate, Mr Hardgrave said his service gave him a lifetime appreciation for giving back to the community.

Mr Hardgrave was invited to attend the Dickson citizenship ceremony and awards with his wife.

“It (the award) was somewhat unexpected – I was sitting there at the citizenship ceremony and I was really enjoying it because I had never been to one before,” Mr Hardgrave said.

“Then they went through the individual awards and the community awards and I’d just texted my wide to say it was lucky she didn’t drag the kids out of bed when they announced the final award.

“I didn’t go expecting to win anything, it was about supporting the community – I really enjoyed listening to the other stories.”

Mr Hardgrave spent 17 years in the Defence Force, including operational service in the Solomon Islands, Timor Leste and Afghanistan, and still serves as an Army Reservist.

“One of the things I have found is people who join Defence join not for a job but because it’s a job with purpose – you’re serving the community and other people.

“A lot of individuals who leave Defence end up in the Ambulance, Fire or Police service or in roles where they contribute to the community – that value of wanting to give back doesn’t leave you.”

Services provided by Solider On include free psychology sessions, social connection, finding employment, and education to repurpose existing skills.

Part of Mr Hardgrave’s work is helping Veterans connect with a community after years of being posted to different cities every two or three years.

Mr Hardgrave is also involved with the Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Club, joining after signing his children up for Nippers.

didn’t have the ability to do all the training they wanted to because they didn’t have enough people to be in the water with the kids,” he said.

“I was on the beach anyway…the next thing I knew I was doing my surf rescue certificate and now I’m on the beach getting in the water and helping.”

Similarly, Mr Hardgrave fell into volunteering at the Albany Creek Crushers Junior Rugby League Club when his own children signed on.

“My son wanted to play footy and they needed coaches.

“It’s an incredible feeling turning young kids into young adults.

“I’d had playing experience and my Defence career led me to a position where I spent a lot of time training people – but it’s difference training 17 and 18-year-olds at Kapooka to seven and eight-year-olds at footy,” he laughed.

NEWS  P.9 MORETON Bay Regional Council is spearheading a six-week community campaign which encourages locals to eat, drink, shop, play, spend at and back a local business.

The widespread campaign, Back a Local, kicks off on February 16 and follows the recent COVID-19 Omicron wave which has challenged local businesses with staff shortages, supply chain issues and loss of visitors.

Mayor Peter Flannery has a clear message for Moreton Bay Region residents: next time you pull out your wallet, think local first.

“Here in Moreton Bay, it’s in our DNA to embrace the Aussie way and look out for each other,” Mayor Flannery said.

“We might be the third largest local government in Australia, but our locals unapologetically embrace a sense of community that can rival even the smallest of towns.

“As a local resident myself, I’m pledging to back a local business whenever I can.

“With more than 29,000 businesses in the Moreton Bay Region supporting 140,000 jobs, I ask the community to work together as part of ‘Team Moreton Bay’.

Hannah Worthy, the managing director of The Store of Requirement at Samford, welcomed the cam-

paign, saying the shop was coming up with creative ideas to draw patrons not only to their business but to others in the village.

“We count ourselves lucky – we’ve been able to keep our doors open, but it’s hurt us financially, and we’ve had to cut our staff hours quite considerably, which has been hard on our small team,” Ms Worthy said.

“We’re a tight-knight community here in Samford, and locals backing locals is in our DNA. “We try and do our part to back local businesses wherever we can, whether it’s from selling cupcakes from a local supplier, or encouraging our visitors to explore around Samford.”

Kim Muldoon said The Store of Requirement launched interactive game Wizards Adventure last year, with two adventures to choose from.

“They take visitors on a scavenger hunt around Samford Village, where the player solves riddles to make their way around the village,” Ms Muldoon explained.

“They get the opportunity to explore other businesses in the village, such as the Museum, information centre, garden centre and local bank.

“You don’t need a knowledge of Harry Potter to play either, it’s problem solving and riddles.”

Players ace holiday program PURE Tennis Academy at Ferny Hills extended its school holiday camps program to cover the two-week delay in students returning to school.

Barty mural making its mark STORY JODIE POWELL A NEW mural of tennis champion Ash Barty – completed just hours ahead of her Australian Open win – is wowing the Ferny Hills community.

Aerosol artist James “Smalls” Small said he was proud to have captured Barty’s determination and tenacity, as well as her Indigenous heritage, on the wall of a building at the Pure Tennis Academy.

“It worked out pretty perfectly timing-wise – we had deliberately timed it to be in the Australian Open, but delays because of rain meant it wasn’t finished until the day of her final match,” Small explained.

“It’s directly based on a reference photo I found of her and it’s the perfect image to celebrate her success.”

Small said academy patrons were fascinated to watch the mural unfold.

“The club was fairly busy while I was working on it and a lot of people were watching it come together – they were intrigued to see how it would turn out.”

He said while some people assumed the Aboriginal flag in the mural was a political statement, he saw it as a celebration of the culture and strong family bonds that were integral to Barty's success.

“And some people have said she’s looking aggressive, but depicting a woman in such a powerful emotional state is something to celebrate.

“They love a golden girl to be humble and smile, but without some of those personal traits (strength and determination) she would not be so successful.”

Small has been drawing “ever since I can remember” and working as an aerosol artist for about 15 years, creating commercial commissions for companies such as Rebel Sport as well as private clients.

Pure Tennis Academy co-owner Brunella Brumm said she was delighted with the result.

“I remember her playing at our tennis centre years and years ago in a Junior Development Series tournament and so many people wanted to see her,” Ms

Brumm said.

“Early last year we were very lucky to have (Ash’s dad) Rob Barty come to the centre to speak to families and have a barbecue.

“We had a mural done of (Raphael) Nadal in 2020 and we really wanted to have one done of Ash. “We wanted something that captured her determination because she had just won Wimbledon.”

Ms Brumm admires Barty’s connection to her family and culture and wanted the mural to reflect the role of both in her life.

“I really wanted to get the colours in there and have it as a piece that our kids and members could be inspired by,” she said.

“It looks like she’s powerful and tough but really it’s her vulnerability – she makes it (winning) look effortless but at the end there’s that release.

“I think it’s really important that we see that as well – it’s a combination of all the hard work and heartache.”

Mr Robertson said people might know the event under its previous name, Hotrods for the Homeless.

He changed the name to Cardi Gras in 2019. The name was inspired by a friend who described his event as “like Mardi Gras, but with cars”.

Cardi Gras events are held across other regions in southeast Queensland including Ipswich, Blackbutt and Caloundra.

Cars have always been a big part of Mr Robertson’s life, with his passion ignit-

ed by his father.

“My dad was a marine engineer and when he married my mum, he left the seas and settled down on land and became a mechanical engineer,” he said.

“He used to deck out his walls with hotrod memorabilia, photos and pin-up girls. I remember Dad put me and my two sisters, my grandparents and my mum in an old HQ Holden and we drove from Taree to the old Scarborough Caravan Park where we spent a week in 1972.”

Cardi Gras is at Strathpine Centre for Breakfast with the Cars on the third Saturday of each month, 8am-noon and Ocean View Estate Winery and Restaurant for Cars among the Vines on the third Sunday of each month from 2-6pm.

Entry for display cars is $5 and a gold coin donation for spectators.

Events will depend on COVID-19 restrictions, with Mr Robertson to post updates on the Cardi Gras Facebook page.

MOTORING buff Rohan James Robertson is sharing his love of classic vehicles with the community by hosting a number of car shows across the Moreton Bay Region this year.

Mr Robertson runs Cardi Gras, an event that brings petrol heads together to browse antique rides in one location, while raising money for charities that help the homeless.

This year the family-friendly event will be at Strathpine, Pine Rivers and the Ocean View Estate Winery and Restaurant.

“Cardi Gras is about giving everyone the chance to show off their pride and joy to other enthusiasts and spectators,” Mr Robertson said.

“We welcome anyone who would love to show off their wheels, from car clubs to individual car owners.

Cat missing for a decade reunited ALMOST a decade after he escaped through the front door, Simba the ginger cat has been reunited with his happy owners after being found at the RSPCA in Dakabin.

Owners Kaitlin and Shaun Thrupp thought they were being pranked when staff called to say they had found Simba.

“Getting that phone call was a massive shock,” Mrs Thrupp said.

“My husband answered the phone and kept asking ‘is this a joke’ repeatedly because we honestly thought we would never find him.”

Simba was two years old when he disappeared from the couple’s Murrumba Downs home in 2012, leaving his owners devastated.

“We looked everywhere for him. We went and spoke to the neighbours and put up flyers,” Mrs Thrupp said.

“At the time, we also paid the RSPCA, who had a pet detective service, to try and find him but we had no luck.”

As the years passed, the couple never gave up their search, monitoring missing pet and rescue pages online in the hope Simba would turn up.

Mrs Thrupp also continued to drive around her neighbourhood of Murrumba Downs hoping to catch a glimpse of Simba, even after the family moved to nearby Narangba.

Thankfully, the pair had kept their contact details up to date on Simba’s microchip, so when he did arrive at the RSPCA staff were able to contact his owners right away.

GUBBI GUBBI elder Dr Eve Fesl is creating a lasting environmental legacy in Burpengary East with the help of the Queensland Koala Crusaders (QKL).

Dr Fesl is working with Crusaders’ volunteers to restore and increase koala habitat on acreage she bought with husband Franz Fesl decades ago.

While much of the property is bushland, volunteers from QKL are clearing weeds and planting new koala-friendly trees to sustain local populations.

Preserving native wildlife is a cause close to Dr Fesl’s heart – she was a member of Victoria’s Save the Kangaroo Committee back in the 1970s.

“I was president of the kangaroo committee and we managed to get kangaroo culling banned in Victoria,” Dr Fesl recalled.

Heartfelt effort for charity STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH TRAINERS from 5ive Element Fitness will be doing a lot of burpees this month – with members paying them to do the dreaded exercise to raise funds for Australia’s biggest killer.

The Strathpine gym is taking part in REDFEB, an initiative by Heart Research Australia to raise awareness about heart disease.

They are hoping to raise $2000 by asking members to donate $1 towards the trainer of their choice, with the trainer then made to do one burpee.

Jayde Beilby from 5ive Element Fitness said they were happy to raise money for the worthy cause.

“Why 5ive Element Fitness chose to support REDFEB is because of our slogan – Where's your heart at?” Ms Beilby said.

“It’s not just the outsides that matter with any transformation – we take a great deal of interest in people’s internal results as well.

Each year, about 54,000 Australians suffer a heart attack, with one person having a heart attack every 10 minutes. Sadly, one person will die every 30 minutes.

Heart attacks are caused by a blockage that stops blood flow to the heart.

While men may experience chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath and nausea, the symptoms are much harder to diagnose in women.

Symptoms women need to be aware of include back, neck or jaw pain, tightness or burning sensation in the chest, dizziness, vomiting, fatigue, light-headedness, nausea, shortness of breath and sweating.

Cardiologist Dr Ashleigh Dind said women were more at risk of heart disease after menopause.

“As women reach their 50s and navigate menopause, their risk factors for heart disease are more likely to increase as the protection

they have received from oestrogen declines,” Dr Dind said.

“Oestrogen plays an important role within women’s bodies.

“One of the many things oestrogen helps do is keep the blood vessels in the body stable and functioning well.

Decade of growth paves way for the future MORETON BAY REGION 2011-2021: THEN AND NOW

STORY JODIE POWELL ATTENDANCE at events, the Moreton Bay Region’s population, sport and recreation facilities and the number of parks and open spaces have surged in the past 10 years.

The final report on the Community Plan 2011-2021 found Moreton Bay Regional Council had spent more than $367 million on building and major renovations for community sport and recreation facilities, planted more than 46,000 trees a year with help from the community and created 111 percent more shared pathways.

Mayor Peter Flannery said one of the most significant achievements of the past decade had been cementing the amalgamation of Redcliffe, Pine Rivers and Caboolture councils in 2008.

“While there’s countless activities to mention, the most ground-breaking has been the amalgamation of our Council,” Mayor Flannery said.

We have big ambitions for the next decade “This action alone was the catalyst for supercharging the region, bringing with it the bigger budgets and better co-ordination and delivery of projects needed to transform and build on all of the great things we have in Moreton Bay.” The Community Plan 2011-2021 provided a framework for Council to work towards a vision around the key themes of Creating Opportunities, Strengthening Communities and Valuing Lifestyle.

With the plan expiring at the end of last year, Council will refresh its vision and incorporate it into its Corporate Plan 2022-2027, which is due for adoption in June.

Other significant milestones included contribut-

ing $108 million to complete 12.6km dual track Moreton Bay Rail Link, securing a university campus at The Mill at Petrie, creating the Moreton Bay Koala Conservation Partnership Project to protect koalas, and building the North Lakes Library and Community Centre.

In the past 10 years the region’s population has grown by more than 100,000 people, there has been a 14 percent increase in registered businesses, a 179 percent boost in CCTV cameras – with 1450 now installed throughout the region – and a spike in attendance at Council events of 170 percent.

“We have big ambitions for the next decade and you can expect to see bigger and bolder action from Council,” Mayor Flannery said.

“We have and will continue to deliver initiatives to protect the natural beauty and enviable lifestyle on offer in the region and the things our residents love most about living here.”

Aid for families struggling with costly school supplies

FAMILIES struggling financially to buy backto-school supplies have received a helping hand thanks to a Moreton Bay organisation.

Volunteers from Stationery Aid at Ferny Hills have spent countless hours packing boxes full of essential items disadvantaged children will need at school this year.

They helped students from 20 schools, five of which were from the Moreton Bay Region. A total of

are collected from various school drop-off locations.

Stationery Aid co-founder Alison Schutt said she and her team had worked hard to sort through the thousands of donations they received.

“We collect excess used and unused school stationery that is in good work-

ing condition and we sort through them and clean them to the highest possible standard so they can be donated in booklist packs and stationery packs for the new school year,” Ms Schutt said.

“For example, we get plenty of notebooks where there might only be a few pages that have writing on them, but the rest of the book is still good to use.

“We might also get stationery items where there is a name on it, which is easy to clean off, or pencils which have only been

used a handful of times.

We sharpen them up and they’re good as new again.

“By renewing these items, not only are we helping families in need, but we are also preventing them from going to landfill.”

Inside the packs are items such as exercise books, textbooks, pens, pencils, erasers, rulers, sharpeners, highlighters, glue, folders, book covers, art supplies, calculators, musical instruments, headphones and more.

Stationery Aid works with schools and chaplains to determine where the packag-

es are needed the most.

“We work with Scripture Union and the chaplains identify the students who are in need.

“They might be families going through hardship, unemployment, domestic violence or (who are) destitute,” Mrs Schutt said.

“The chaplains then pass on the packs to the students.”

Stationery Aid also receives calls from organisations such as The Salvation Army and Variety Queensland, who have families experiencing hardship.

BRIGHT sparks with big ideas are being given the chance to make their dreams a reality, with entries open for the 2022 Mayor’s Telstra Innovation Awards.

In partnership with Telstra, the awards program is open to all Moreton Bay Region students in Years 9 to 12, with the aim of helping them learn, explore and develop their entrepreneurial spirit.

They will also be connected with industry mentors who can help develop their skills, and hone in on critical thinking.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery said the awards would ignite students’ imaginations.

“Big things are often sparked by what might seem like small ideas, and I’m so proud to help our local students shine through this awards program,” Mayor Flannery said.

“We want Moreton Bay’s young people to not only dream big, but to know that we believe in them, and want to help them achieve what they might think is impossible.

The program aims to put the spotlight on the study of STEM subjects – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

There is more than $10,000 in prizes up for grabs.

LAWN grubs are destroying lawns across the region in large numbers, enjoying summer heat, high rainfall and humidity.

The conditions are ideal for pupa that have been patiently waiting in the soil below the grass to hatch.

Coochie HydroGreen North Lakes area manager Paul Martin said it was a perfect storm.

“They’re everywhere. We’ve been in full swing treating them since October,” Mr Martin said.

“There’s a lot of lawns out there that are damaged.”

He said the grubs, with “champagne taste” went in search of healthy lawns to devour.

He receives 10 calls a month from clients who had spent thousands laying new lawns which already had grubs in them.

Many people buy retail products to treat their lawns, but the grubs return because no preventative treatment has been applied.

“It’s all about prevention and maintenance, if you don’t do your homework, they’ll be back,” Mr Martin said.

“Top of the tree for lawn grubs is a healthy, well-fed lawn,” he said.

So, what are the signs to look for so your backyard does not

become a lawn grub buffet?

“Your first sign is your lawn will look brown and you’ll think it’s dry. A lot of people confuse irrigation with lawn grubs. It’s a shift in the way the lawn looks,” Coochie HydroGreen franchise owner Ian McLeod said.

You will also notice moths and small grey wasps flying around. Then clusters of eggs will form on gutters and soffits, resembling small balls of cotton wool.

Each cluster can have 400-500 eggs in it.

“They come down on little spider silks, like a parachute or bungy cord, as tiny little grubs – they call them instars – and they’re no bigger than a pinhead,” Mr McLeod said.

“He hits the ground and starts eating. He eats in the lawn for around two weeks until he gets to the size of your finger. Then he will dig down and start to metamorphosize into a pupa.

“The pupa will stay in the soil and then emerge as a moth. They can do up to six generations in one year. That’s just one moth, one family.”

Mr McLeod said a lawn could be “back to bone” within three to four days.

“They eat the leaf, not the whole plant − they don’t attack the roots. It’s like using thinning scissors through your hair.

“They’re thinning it out by eating the leaf. Then, the roots and soil are exposed,” he says.

“It doesn’t kill it, but what happens is all the weeds come in and the lawn gets dried out and bakes the soil. Then your soil become hydrophobic.

It starts to repel water like greaseproof paper.”

The best way to deal with lawn grubs is to apply preventative treatments every eight weeks.

“If you brush the eggs off a surface, they will die but that’s more for aesthetics because you won’t actually stop them.

You can clean them one day and they’re back the next,” Mr McLeod said.

During my interactions with beginners, I continually hear they've searched YouTube or social media and significant numbers of them are overwhelmed by the diversity and technicality of the advice being handed out via these sources.

While some advice and tips may be valid, and showcasing the latest and greatest tackle on offer delivers for sponsors and manufacturers, the conflicting nature of quite a lot of the information due to competition for likes, views and subscribers results in information overload and confusion for the parents and grandparents who just want to take the kids fishing for the first time. It's supposed to be fun, not stressful, yes?

While high-end rods and reels, the latest and greatest lures or the current trendy knots and rigs are beautiful to use and successfully using a new technique, rig or piece of tackle can deliver a great sense of satisfaction, they aren't required for families to go out, enjoy a few hours on the beach or at the local jetty and have the kids catch a fish.

The excitement a child shows when catching their first fish is so openly honest and unrestrained, it's beautiful, and the memories being created are priceless for everyone concerned, but it won't happen if the adults decide to do something else.

Fishing and Boating

So, for any beginners out there thinking about having a go, grab a handline or an entry level rod and reel combo, some fresh bait, a few sinkers and some small hooks, (kids just want to catch something, they don't care if it's big), learn one simple, basic knot, and get out there and give it a shot.

It definitely beats sitting at home staring at a screen. Have a yarn to fellow fishos on the day as well.

Most of them are quite happy to offer some advice to help a newcomer learn the ropes.

And for those of us who may be more experienced, maybe it's time to remind ourselves why we love fishing so much?

FLATHEAD are always a popular target for recreational fishers. Flathead belong to the family Platycephalidae and there are approximately 80 species known worldwide and well over half of these are known from Australia.

The name of the family is derived from the Greek words platy, meaning "flat", and kephale for "head". Most species are only small fish (less than 20cm) and they live in depths from about 1-300m.

There are three species anglers generally encounter around the Moreton region – the dusky flathead (Platycephalus fuscus), the bar tailed flathead (Platycephalus australis) and the sand flathead (Platycephalus endrachtensis). Anglers fishing offshore over sandy habitat frequently catch the eastern blue spot flathead (Platycephalus caeruleopunctatus).

The dusky flathead is the largest member of the family and the species most frequently targeted and caught by anglers in Moreton Bay. It is differentiated from the other common species by the presence of large dark blotch on the tail. It is restricted to the Australian east coast and ranges from approximately Cairns to the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria and prefers shallow water (generally less than 10m).

and spawn at surf bars like Jumpinpin from November through to April. Fish can spawn more than once per spawning season.

Dusky flathead that are present in estuarine locations at that time of the year do not spawn.

Small juveniles less than 12cm first appear in nursery areas such as seagrass and mangrove areas 1-2 months after spawning.

Female dusky flathead grow much larger than males and live longer. In Queensland, female dusky flathead reach a maximum age of about 11 years and males about seven years.

The majority of dusky flathead over about 45cm are females.

While dusky flathead move around Moreton Bay, the vast majority of fish stay within the bay.

As many an angler knows, flathead have venomous spines either side of their gill covers.

Surprisingly the venom and venom apparatus is poorly studied.

Josh takes on world NORTH Lakes resident Josh Hands has this week started his assault on two world snooker titles.

The 16-year-old is in the World Snooker Federation (WSF) Junior (Under 18) Championship and the WSF Championships, which are being held backto-back in the UK city of Sheffield - the sport’s spiritual home.

Hands is one of four Australians selected for the championships, described as the "most significant amateur competitions held globally".

Hands practiced for hours every day during the summer holidays and because of his trip tio the UK will miss the first three weeks of his Year 12 at North Lakes State College.

Walmsley sees Red and prepares STORY NICK CROCKFORD BEN Walmsley is no longer dreaming of a baseball career in the US – he is counting down to the day it starts.

The former Pine Hills Lightning player, has signed with Cincinnati Reds and is “shut down” from competitive pitching until he joins the MLB (Major League Baseball) club.

That will be in April for extended spring training in Arizona. Until then the 17-year-old is following a Reds program at home.

“It’s a four-week block, six-days a week, one day

off,” said Walmsley, “mostly fitness and then the (sixweeks spring) training will be more development.

“I’m actually feeling quite nervous at the moment.

There’s going to be a lot of change, new people and a new culture to get used to.”

Walmsley will start in the Reds’ Rookie Ball team, for players aged 18-25, in the 80-game Arizona Complex League, then go to the Under 18 World Cup in Florida in September.

and eventually the MLB – a feat only 33 Australians are reported to have achieved.

“That’s the ultimate goal,” said Walmsley, who has been at Redcliffe Padres two years.

Genesis duo praised for national efforts TWO members of Genesis Sport and Aquatics (GSA) - at Genesis Christian College in Bray Park - took on Australia’s best at the national Open Water Championships in Adelaide.

Four-some sprint titles STORY NICK CROCKFORD ALBANY Creek Swimming Club (ACSC) celebrated “fantastic racing” at the recent Brisbane Sprint Championships.

The club’s 55 swimmers returned with four Brisbane champions, nine medallists, 18 top 10 finishes and 105 personal bests from 171 races.

With all races over 50m, Tobi R led the way winning triple gold in the 1215 years MC backstroke, freestyle and butterfly as well as silver in the breaststroke.

ACSC colleague Nicholas Osborn won gold in the 11 years freestyle, silver in the breaststroke and bronze in the butterfly.

There were also bronze medals for Madelaine Field in the 11 years butterfly and Annika O’Shea 17 years backstroke.

ACSC Head Coach Brendan Dowling praised all the swimmers and coaches saying it was “two days of fantastic racing”.

“Awesome team spirit and it's brilliant to see the hard work paying off,” he said.

Johnson looks set to wear the No.7 jersey, with the other three competing for No.6 and bench utility role.

“We’re working through how we’re going to play and who’s playing in what position. I guess we won’t be able to nail it down for certain until we’ve played trials and players put their hands up,” Jones said.

“It’s exciting for us to trial here (at Redcliffe) because

we’ve done all our preseason, it’s going to be our last hitout and near-enough to our best possible squad that’s fit and healthy,” he said.

“Hopefully there will be a lot of expat Kiwis and locals that can support this team because we feel this is our home now,” Jones said.

Captain Tohu Harris, who is recovering from knee surgery, hopes to make his playing return in mid-May. He’s feeling confident ahead of the season opener against The Dragons at Sunshine Coast Stadium on March 12.

COACH Royce Brownlie is ambitious and realistic as Moreton Bay United prepare for the start of the 2022 NPL Qld, the state's top football league, later this month.

Jets had more wins, scored more goals and finished 2021 with more points than the previous year, yet ended up two places lower on the ladder in seventh.

However, with “99 per cent” of last

season’s squad returning and three key additions, Royce Brownlie has his sights set firmly on the finals again.

“I’ll put it out there … I think we are definitely capable of being a top four team this year,” he said.

“If everything goes well and clicks, if we can tighten up a little bit more defensively, we can push for a top two spot.

“For me it is about key moments.

“Last year we were so fluent in attack and so positive as a team, but not strong enough at times - and we didn't defend as well as we should.
