her mark

STORY JODIE POWELL NINETEEN-year-old Eatons Hill singer Zoe Quinn has known she wanted to perform since she first danced on stage in the Chai Tent at the Woodford Folk Festival.

Quinn, who released her latest single, Walking Away, on New Year’s Eve at Woodfordia, remembers the moment vividly.

“When I was four, I was dancing out the front of the Chai Tent and the artist invited me up on stage to dance.

“I knew from then that I wanted to be up on stage and perform,” she recalled.

While most of her music has been what she described as “Indie/Folk/ Pop”, Walking Away, produced at Camp Mountain’s Airlock Studios – founded by Powderfinger lead guitarist Ian Haug – takes things up a notch.

Originally penned as a song about a friendship that didn’t work out, Walking Away has evolved in to an upbeat tune about relationships in general.

“It started out as being written about a friendship not working out and having realised that they weren’t really a real friend.

“The song has grown and become a lot more angry."

Quinn juggles performing across the region and beyond with fulltime study for a dual degree in Design and Business at QUT and said the recording and development of Walking Way had been boosted by a Moreton Bay Regional Council Regional Arts Development Fund grant.

Working with producer Cody McWaters of King Stingray fame, Quinn

played acoustic and electric guitar and sang, with McWaters adding bass guitar and Finn Polbodetto the drum beat.

“It was the first time I had live drums and you can really hear it build,” she said.

The release of Walking Away followed the success of debut EP Hearts on Sleeves in 2020 and her single Strange World.

“I’ve had a really great response since I released it and I’ve gained a lot more

performing experience.

“I’ve spent more time writing more songs and doing more recording.

“Now, I’m aiming to focus more on writing a lot of songs and working on production skills as well.”

Last year Quinn graced stages at Redcliffe Kitefest, the Caboolture Festival and Suttons Beach Pavilion at Redcliffe as well as the Anywhere Festival, Woodford Bushtime and Bar Wunder in Toowoomba.

Chance to run new coffee cart at library

Push to keep Dayboro vet open STORY JODIE POWELL DAYBORO residents are lobbying the University of Queensland to retain a veterinarian service in the town.

Late last year, UQ announced plans to cease operating the Dayboro veterinary clinic as a university-owned entity after more than 30 years.

Instead, the two-week training element at Dayboro that is part of the university’s veterinary science and veterinary technology degree programs would move to the Gatton campus.

All UQ veterinary science and veterinary technology degree programs have been taught at Gatton since 2010.

But residents fear the move will put pressure on other local vets and deny cattle owners vital access to specialised bovine veterinary services.

Mount Mee resident Millie Yee said while dairy farming had largely disappeared from the district, there was an increasing number of smaller beef farms cropping up, which relied on having specialised veterinarians close by.

“We’re new to farming, transitioning as we get older,” Ms Yee said.

“It’s all about the breeding program, the genetics, the right quality of bull, getting the right offspring.

“We still need the ex-

pertise of vets, especially when it comes to birthing the cattle.

“There’s still a need, but it’s a different type of need.”

She said the UQ proposal had taken the community by surprise.

“The first we heard of it was through one of the Dayboro Community members’ posts on Facebook,” Ms Yee said.

“I had a town hall meeting just before Christmas and 100 people turned up – I was shocked, I was expecting about 30.”

Among those who attended was UQ School of Veterinary Science head Professor Nigel Perkins.

“This is going to put more

strain on the system and not many practices deal with bovines,” Ms Yee said.

“People with cattle will struggle.”

Ms Mee said those who attended urged Prof Perkins to ensure the service remained available.

“It’s clear that the final decision has not been made, so maybe there’s still hope,” she said.

In a statement on the UQ website, Prof Perkins said the university would extend the clinic’s operation to June 30.

“We understand the significance and prominence of a veterinary service in a community as close-knit as Dayboro and the level of in-

terest about ongoing access to quality veterinary care for all types of animals,” he said.

“UQ is actively working toward the continuation of a veterinary practice at the site, albeit one that operates privately.

“The University has already received multiple expressions of interest from individuals and organisations looking to continue a practice at UQ’s current Dayboro clinic.

“If, after the staff consultation period concludes, the proposed closure goes ahead, we will establish a transparent process to sell or lease the facility, with veterinary providers heavily prioritised.”

Mayor Peter Flannery said the hospital would help drive economic recovery post-COVID-19.

COUNCIL is seeking expressions of interest from community groups to operate a coffee cart or van at the Arana Hills Library.

The contract at the library is for 12 months, with an option to extend by up to three years.

Councillor Matt Constance (Div 10) said visitors had long been asking for a food outlet at the library.

“We’ve heard loud and clear that locals would love to stay longer and relax at the library, but there are no retailers nearby offering food or coffee,” Cr Constance said.

“This is a unique and special opportunity for a notfor-profit or community group to bring a real sense of vibrancy to an already bustling precinct.

“Personally, I’d love to see a coffee van or cart that offers professional development and training for people living with disabilities, looking to gain new skills or returning to the workforce.”

The successful applicant would be provided with space to operate either a coffee cart on the library deck overlooking the park, or a coffee van in an allocated parking bay in the lower carpark.

The successful applicant will also be provided with free access to water and electricity to enable the sale of refreshments to visitors, with Council to cover these costs.

Community groups have until 4pm on Friday, February 11 to submit their application.

An information pack is available to help organisations prepare their submission.

A COMMUNITY Council meeting scheduled for Woodford on February 16 has been postponed due to safety concerns associated with COVID-19.

Report crime to police

A new Football Centre for Excellence at Brendale will be finished in time for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH A NEW BMX racetrack and Football Centre for Excellence will be built at Brendale, kickstarting the region’s preparations for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Work on the $1 million BMX racetrack at Nolan Park is expected to be completed this month, while construction of the $22.6 million Football Centre of Excellence started last month.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Flannery said he hoped the international-standard BMX racetrack at Nolan Park would inspire aspiring Olympians.

“Logan from Logan won Olympic gold in the inaugural BMX freestyle competition at the Tokyo Games after he built a skate park in his own backyard,” Mayor Flannery said.

“Now Moreton Bay is building an international competition standard BMX

racetrack at Nolan Park that will hopefully produce Australia’s first gold medallist in that discipline.

“It’s important that our youth have the best facilities in the country that will allow them to dare to dream of representing Australia one day.”

While the Brisbane Roar will use the Football Centre for Excellence, it has also started to attract international clubs interested in using the facility.

“The new $22 million

Football Centre of Excellence will become the new home of the Brisbane Roar’s junior academy and women’s team, just in time for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup which will be co-hosted by Australia,” Mayor Flannery said.

“This facility will be so good that we’ve already received significant interest from FIFA to host an international team before it’s even been built.”

The BMX clubhouse is nearing completion, with

construction of the BMX track expected to finish this month.

Mayor Flannery said both projects received a helping hand from the State and Federal governments.

“The BMX racetrack and clubhouse project has been made possible thanks to $1.5 million COVID stimulus from the State Government, while the Federal Government has contributed $500,000 to the South Pine Sports Complex upgrades,” he said.

MORETON Bay police have urged people to report crime to them first, rather than on social media.

They said while social media was useful for letting the community know about crimes, it did not help police respond quickly or help with investigations.

Road flood fix starting this year

Pirate Kitty finds furever home STORY JODIE POWELL A CHEEKY ginger puss with a penchant for pilfering has captured the imagination of a community.

Such is the brazen feline’s reputation for bounty hunting, he’s changed his name and been granted asylum at Ferny Hills with Ingrid Moyle – and become a media star in the process.

In his previous life as Johnny, he roamed the streets surrounding his Ferny Grove home in search of treasures to deliver to neighbours Kay and Tom McCall.

Now he’s known as Pirate Kitty Kylo and has settled into an indoor life.

His nefarious career ramped up last March when the McCalls moved to Ferny Grove.

“When we’d been here a week or so a ginger cat popped over the fence for a pat,” Ms McCall said.

“He came back the next day and most days after that – he’d come into the house and say hi.

“Then I noticed some small dog toys on the lawn and thought the kids next door had thrown them over

Johnny’s daily deliveries to the McCalls escalated, with a Build-A-Bear, a small Peter Rabbit and a fabric doll added to the collection, along with a school shirt and a rubber chicken leg toy.

Faced with a growing haul, Ms McCall posted photos of the treasures on a local Facebook page.

“The original intention was to find the owners of the toys,” she said.

The gifts continued to arrive for several months before complaints to Council about Johnny’s antics – and his refusal to be confined indoors – led his owners to make the heartbreaking decision to find him a new home.

Having followed his adventures on Facebook and with experience in training outdoor cats to live inside, Ms Moyle responded to Ms McCall’s plea on behalf of Johnny’s owners.

“They’d tried to make him an indoor cat but he dug

his way out of an enclosure and was distressed when they kept him inside,” Ms Moyle explained.

When he moved in, Johnny refused to respond to his name, so the Moyles tried a variety of new monikers before he settled on Kylo – a fitting choice given Ms Moyle’s passion for all things Star Wars.

Kylo’s conversion to indoor life was easier than Ms Moyle anticipated and he now rules the roost with his own toybox of treasures that she tips out downstairs each night.

WORK on a long-awaited bridge to mitigate flooding issues on Youngs Crossing Rd at Joyner is expected to start in the second half of the year.

Moreton Bay Regional Council announced at its first meeting of the year that expressions of interest to build the 212m bridge would be sought next month.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the bridge would improve flood immunity and cater for growing traffic on the notorious stretch of road.

“Right now, 20,000 vehicles (per day) use this stretch of road,” he said.

“That’s thousands of locals cut off from vital services the moment heavy rain rolls through or the nearby dam releases water.”

As part of the project – jointly funded project by Council and the Federal Government – the bridge

will be built west of the existing road.

The project will include upgrades to the Protheroe Rd intersection and ongoing access to the nearby park.

Mayor Flannery said the project was expected to generate more than 500 jobs.

Dickson Federal MP Peter Dutton welcomed progress on the project and said the Federal Government had committed more than $30 million towards the upgrade.

“It only takes a few severe storms like the ones we’ve seen just this summer to put Youngs Crossing out of action, forcing drivers to take a much longer detour and putting pressure on other roads like the Bruce Highway and Old Gympie Rd,” Mr Dutton said.

The expressions of interest process will run until April, with short-listed businesses then invited to tender for the project and start work in the second half of the year.

WHILE many people have worked from home throughout the pandemic, the team from Terry White Chemmart at Albany Creek, led by manager Paul Scholz, has been on the frontline providing healthcare for their community.

Every day they reassure customers who are anxious about vaccinations, boosters, COVID symptoms and Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs), as well as caring for those who have other medical conditions and needs.

“We are part of a profession that is here to help the community through the

pandemic,” Mr Scholz said.

“We are listening to people’s concerns and giving them the best advice we can to make sure we are still providing that high level of care every time.

“To make sure we continue doing our jobs well, we need to get streamlined and accurate information in a timely matter before the public so we can be proactive instead of reactive.

“I would say that has been one of our biggest challenges.”

The demand for RATs has also kept staff busy, with the store’s three phone lines ringing non-stop 12 hours a day, and lines of

TUCKED away in a laboratory at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Scarborough’s Angela Coriat leads a dedicated team of 100 hidden heroes working around the clock to keep the community safe.

Few people give a second thought about their swabs once they leave a COVID-19 testing centre – other than when they will get the result.

But Mrs Coriat and the specialist technicians have focused on little else other than the hundreds of thousands of slender sticks they have processed since the pandemic struck in early 2020.

The manager of the Core Laboratory at the RBWH describes herself as just one person among a massive state-wide response to COVID-19 by Pathology Queensland – the public provider for pathology testing for Queensland.

“There are lots of unpleasant phone calls when we run out, but we have absolutely no control over that,” he said.

But seeing the smiles on the faces of loyal customers who continually thank them makes every day worthwhile.

“Our patients say they are thankful for the job we are doing,” he said.

Mr Scholz also praised his team for putting in extra hours and going above their job description to help everyone who comes into the store.

While Mrs Coriat and her team were used to round-the-clock work, they had no inkling of the tsunami of tests that would head their way.

“I recall the very first Saturday back in early 2020 when the first testing numbers surged and my team were inundated with swabs and called me for help,” Mrs Coriat said.

“We hadn’t experienced anything like this before and for a number of months I was very hands-on.

“With over 100 staff in my laboratory we are also responsible for urgent COVID testing to assist in patient flow in the emergency department, the processing

and referral as required for any suspected vaccine-induced blood clots, COVID-19 antibody testing and clinical trials relating to COVID.” “If you have ever been to an emergency department or outpatient clinic and had bloods collected, these would be processed by my team.

“This didn’t stop because of COVID so the staff have been processing the COVID testing on top of our usual workload,” she explained.

Mrs Coriat said there was no such thing as an average shift – the process remains the same but the volume varies depending on community transmission rates.

“Last week, Pathology Queensland processed almost 84,500 swabs across

As a state-wide service, Pathology Queensland is equipped to transport specimens for testing, but Mrs Coriat said logistical creativity came to the fore when planes were grounded and flights cancelled – yet swabs still needed to reach Brisbane or Townsville for testing.

“As an organisation we responded rapidly, with staff driving samples in relay style across the vast state of Queensland and we even had one of our pathologists flying specimens from Rockhampton to Brisbane on his weekend off,” she said.

Mrs Coriat said Pathology Queensland played a critical role in keeping other healthcare workers in the field.

ensure her customers can still fill their trolley.

IGA Cashmere store manager Jess Stone has worked tirelessly with suppliers and staff throughout the pandemic to ensure shelves, fridges and freezers remain full.

“We haven’t experienced panic buying this time around like we did last year, and that’s because our customers understand some items are in short supply, so they’re only taking what they need and leaving the rest for other people,” Ms Stone said.

“We have also been able to fill our shelves pretty quickly and that’s because of the help we receive from our suppliers, who send out their territory managers to help.”

While some retail workers have been abused by frustrated customers in recent weeks, Ms Stone said that had not been the case

CHILDCARE has been a crucial service throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, remaining open to ensure children are cared for while their parents continue essential work.

Educators, chefs, cleaners and administrators at services including Sesame Lane Care and Kindergarten have been on the frontline for the past two years.

Dakabin Service Manager Megan Le Brocq said it had been important for children and their families to have a sense of normalcy in their lives.

“It is important that we provide the children with the same love and care that they are used to from us. It also gives parents the opportunity to continue working and try to relieve some pressure in their

A MARINE Rescue volunteer, a University of the Third Age champion, a man dedicated to helping the homeless and a volunteer credited with growing the next generation of sporting stars have been recognised at this year’s Moreton Bay Region Australia Day awards.

Bribie Island’s Graham Gibb received the top gong in Moreton Bay Regional Council’s 2022 awards, in a streamlined awards program with just two categories – Citizen of the Year and Mayor’s Community Spirit.

Mr Gibb said he was proud to be among those recognised and equally proud to be part of an amazing community.

“The best thing about

As a senior radio officer with Volunteer Marine Rescue Bribie Island for more than a decade, Mr Gibb plays a vital role in protecting people enjoying Moreton Bay and supporting crews on the water, as well shoring up the future of the organisation.

Having worked for the NSW Road Traffic Authority for about 40 years, Mr Gibb said he relished the

chance to use his skills with Marine Rescue and as a Volunteer in Policing for almost a decade.

His wife, Rebecca, said her husband’s contribution to the community was fitting.

“He always says ‘when you’re working, you receive and when you finish, it’s your time to repay it’,” Mrs Gibb said.

Among Mr Gibb’s proudest achievements is establishing Bribie’s annual Emergency Services Expo, which is now the biggest in South East Queensland.

“Last year was its seventh year and the outstanding thing about it is the commitment from all the exhibitors,” he said.

In his role with the RTA, Mr Gibb spent a lot of time working with police and said joining the force

as a Volunteer in Policing seemed a natural fit.

“Our Coffee with a Cop has been a great success.

It’s an ever-evolving role and one where what you put in is what you get back,” he said.

He was humbled to be named Citizen of the Year. “To be in the presence of the Community Spirit Award winners… some of the things I have done pale into insignificance,” he said.

Bribie Island’s Ann Brooks, Lawnton’s Len McCandless and Morayfield’s Mick Klein received Mayor’s Community Spirit awards for their work with the Bribie Island U3A, working with the homeless and establishing the Caboolture Sports Club respectively.

FORMER Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Koliana Winchester has set up a Red Cross fundraising page in a bid to help the organisation provide humanitarian aid to the people of Tonga.

It follows a 5.8 magnitude volcanic eruption and subsequent tsunami, which devastated many communities across the South Pacific island kingdom on January 15.

Mrs Winchester grew up in Tonga and has two sisters and extended family still living there. Communications to Tonga are still patchy but she has received word they are safe.

She aims to raise $2500 to “ensure the Red Cross Movement can be there to provide humanitarian support to people and communities affected by the Tonga volcanic eruption and tsunami”.

“A lot of people got in touch with me to see how they could donate. With COVID, I couldn’t do what I would normally do (organise a fundraising event).

“I know it’s a very tough time for the community here as well, with COVID, that’s why I put up that (modest) amount and hopefully I can reach that target.”

Mrs Winchester said collecting and delivering goods was difficult at present and the best way to help was to donate money via the Red Cross.

“It will help them to continue to deliver aid and do what they can to help those who have been affected,” she said.

She has lived in Tonga during tropical cyclones but can’t imagine what it was like for people when the eruption and tsunami struck.

“When I was watching this unfold, I thought this is the worst ever… especially the ash,” she says.

Samford stalwart humbled by OAM STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH ONE of Samford’s finest has been acknowledged in the national Australia Day honours list for 2022.

Long-term resident Bob Millar was awarded an Order of Australia (OAM) medal for his service to the community.

Mr Millar served in local government for 16 years – he was a councillor in the former Pine Rivers Shire Council from 2008-16, and the amalgamated Moreton Bay Regional Council from 2008-2016.

He has also been actively involved with the Rotary Club of Samford, the Samford Rural Brigade and the Brendale and Samford Community Bank, as well

as patron of several notfor-profit community and sporting groups.

Mr Millar said while he was thrilled to receive the award, he also wanted to share it with others in his community.

“I am deeply honoured to be recognised in this way. I never thought in my wildest dreams the time I spent helping my community would lead to an award of this stature,” he said.

“I look at this award and I think it is paired with lots of other people in the community who I have crossed paths with in my life, all of whom want to make the community a better place.

“I don’t see it (the award) as a personal thing, but something that should be

shared with others and something that acknowledges what volunteerism is all about,” Mr Millar said.

“All volunteers do their volunteering because of the contributions they want to make to their community. I know I have gotten so much out of volunteering, probably more than what I have given these groups.”

Mr Millar thanked his family for their sacrifices in allowing him to dedicate his time to helping others.

“One of the most important things in my journey has been the role of my family. My wife and children have been with me every step of the way... they share in this award as much as I do.”

Former mayor’s charges dropped STORY KYLIE KNIGHT FORMER Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland is calling for a commission of inquiry or a Royal Commission after corruption charges against him were dropped last month.

The Director of Public Prosecutions officially dropped the charges – two counts of misconduct in public office – during a brief hearing in Brisbane Magistrate’s Court on January 20. It followed an investigation by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC).

Mr Sutherland was charged and suspended as Mayor in late 2019. The al-

legations related to a property he owned at Burpengary and the upgrade of the road on which it was located. It was also alleged he lobbied councillors in relation to a planning scheme.

When asked if he would have preferred the legal process to continue and have received a “not guilty” verdict, he said no.

Mr Sutherland said the Department of Public Prosecutions “decided

not to proceed with the charges and offered no evidence”. He said that was very different to “insufficient evidence” because no evidence was offered.

“I believed right from the start there was no evidence, there were a lot of assumptions made by the CCC but there was no evidence,” he said.

Mr Sutherland said the whole saga had been an “assault on the democratic process” to remove a mayor who had been in office for 25 years.

“I was put in by the people and should have been taken out by the people,” he said. He also questioned the way the investigation was conducted.

“I’m not going to stop until I get to the bottom of it.

I don’t want any more people being persecuted in this way,” Mr Sutherland said.

“I believe there are serious answers I need for closure and I won’t rest until I get those answers. I have a lot offer any inquiry.”

He said an inquiry might go some way to repairing his reputation but conceded some people would always think “where there’s smoke, there’s fire”.

“I believe the state of Queensland deserves much better than what we’re getting from the CCC, they should have no faith in that organisation whatsoever,” Mr Sutherland said.

Alan MacSporran resigned following pressure from quarters including the Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee (PCCC) and the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ).

“I find myself in a position where, despite a career spanning in excess of 40 years, where my honesty and integrity have never been questioned, it is clear to me that the relationship between myself and the PCCC has broken down irretrievably. This saddens me deeply,” he said in a statement.

LGAQ President Mark Jamieson welcomed Mr MacSporran’s resignation.

“This … is an important

first step on the road to rebuilding public confidence in the CCC,” he said.

“We look forward to the State Government’s response to the recommendations of the Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Commission’s report, tabled in December, which we hope will be supported and implemented in full.”

Ms Palaszczuk said she was still “carefully considering” the PCCC report, which made several recommendations, including a commission of inquiry into the CCC. “The government response is due in March,” she said.

Mr Sutherland, 65, said he had no plans to return to local government.

ARTIST BJ Murphy has always liked to dabble in different sorts of art, but he never thought a spurof-the-moment photograph would win him the top prize in the region’s biggest art competition.

Mr Murphy wowed the judges in last year’s Moreton Bay Region Art Prize with a stunning photo of himself inside a hollowed-out tree in the forest.

The photo was taken by his friend Jo-anne Driessens, but the concept was his idea.

The portrait represented his connection to his country and his ancestors.

“This was the first time I had entered the Moreton Bay Region Art Prize, and the first significant art prize I had won so I was really blown away,” he said.

“I got that feeling of finally making it and being acknowledged for the effort I have put into my art

Entries will be on display from Saturday, May 7 to Saturday, June 4, 2022. over the years. What made it even more special was I won the prize on my country, Jinibara country.

“I actually teared up but blamed it on the air-conditioning!

“I certainly didn’t think a photograph would be what landed me the prize because photography has always been a side hobby for me.

“This photo wasn’t planned at all, but I don’t think I could have planned it any better.”

After taking out the top prize on his first entry, Mr Murphy is encouraging other local artists to submit their favourite pieces

for this year’s competition.

“I would encourage anyone and everyone to enter because you just never know what the judges are looking for,” he said.

“I think as artists we can be quite hard on ourselves when it comes to critiquing our own work, but this art prize gives you the opportunity to push yourself further as an artist.”

Entries are open now for anyone over the age of 18 and close on Thursday, March 10.

A prize pool of $10,000 is up for grabs for the lucky winners.

Entry is free and although there are no entry categories, artists can select from art forms such as photography, painting, textile, sculpture or other on the entry form.

When asked if he plans to enter this year’s competition, Mr Murphy said he was still undecided.

Passion for community a key driver STORY JODIE POWELL FOSTERING community pride and focusing on the needs of the region while serving her own division are among the key goals of Moreton Bay’s newest councillor.

Voted in at the region’s first by-election in December, Yvonne Barlow is relishing the chance to represent the community again after a 13-year absence from council chambers.

The former Pine Rivers Shire Division 10 Councillor acknowledges the local government landscape has changed since the shire was dissolved to make way for Moreton Bay Regional Council in 2008. But she said the passion residents had for the communities in which they lived had not.

“Some things I am working on at the moment are things I was involved in then and

the residents are still involved,” Cr Barlow said.

“It’s great to be able to work with them again − you have to know where you have come from to be able to look forward.”

While she’s keen to lobby on behalf of the residents of Division 7, Cr Barlow said she was also conscious of the need to represent the whole region and contribute to decisions that would benefit the greater good.

“I left council 13 years ago and a lot has changed in that time – there’s a lot more layers and governance but they’re all important.”

Speaking to Moreton Daily News at the park named in her honour at Murrumba Downs, Cr Barlow says she brings the same drive to the role that she did when first elected in 1997.

Race on for J2J early birds QUEENSLAND’S longest running fun run – the Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run – is back and bigger than ever in 2022.

Early Bird registrations for the 2022 Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run will close on Friday, February 4.

The 2022 event will be held on Sunday, July 17 at Pelican Park, Clontarf, but organisers are urging those interested to register early as categories are expected to sell out again this year.

“Last year’s Jetty 2 Jetty was hugely popular,” Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) CEO Shane Newcombe said.

“We had a waiting list a mile long for people wanting to register for sold out race categories.”

The 2022 event will again offer a range of categories suited to runners and walkers of all ages and fitness levels, including 3km, 5km, 10km and 21km (half-marathon).

“After successfully introducing the 10km Elite Wheelchair category in

2021, we are proud to include this as part of the 2022 event program,” Mr Newcombe said.

“MBRIT is committed to taking even further steps to making all of our events more inclusive and accessible.”

Jetty 2 Jetty recently made strides onto the national and international stage by achieving official course certification from AIMS, the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races.

“Our event runners are now eligible to set records and achieve marathon qualification points by participating in the J2J,” Mr Newcombe said.

Mayor Peter Flannery said with the hype of South East Queensland securing the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the achievement of Aussie athletes at Tokyo 2020, the stage was set for the 2022 Jetty 2 Jetty to be the most thrilling one yet.

“Whether you’re a serious runner looking to achieve your best half-marathon, a business looking for a fun corporate event or have simply been inspired by our Olympic athletes − Jetty 2 Jetty is the must-do running event on the Sunshine State calendar.”

Entry prices include official 2022 merchandise with 21km and 10km entrants receiving a J2J singlet, while 3km and 5km entrants will receive a J2J visor. Merchandise is also available for purchase at the time of registration.

Runners can save on their entry fee by signing up, or joining, a team of 10 or more by May 2, receiving a 10 per cent discount.

Scouts find place to call home

LAKESIDE Raceway will host a fundraiser on February 4 for the family of Senior Constable David Masters and Blue Hope.

Senior Constable Masters, pictured, was killed in June last year while deploying road spikes on the Bruce Highway at Burpengary.

He was based at Deception Bay Police Station and left behind a wife and son.

Funds will also go to Blue Hope, the organisation supporting police officers with mental health problems.

About 100 vehicles, including Mad Max cars and Ferraris, are expected at the private event, doing laps and a timed sprint.

The event has been named Bronze by the Lake – Bronze being the name police are referred to in the Mad Max films. It is hoped it will become an annual event supporting different causes, but with Blue Hope being the standard.

KALLANGUR Scouts are settling into their new home after five years of using temporary accommodation – and they can’t wait to show it off to the community at their grand opening.

Group leader Kerry “Kalori” Skillington said it had been a tough time for the group, which had lost about half its membership in that time.

But he said they were thrilled to be in the $722,000 centre – purpose built with Moreton Bay Regional Council and Federal Government funding – at Murrumba Downs.

“We had been at Duffield Rd since the 1970s and when we had to leave that site we went to Petrie and then we were fortunate to get something closer to home at John Oxley Reserve,” Mr Skillington said.

“But it wasn’t fit for purpose and only had a small area indoors.

“There were many nights we had to cancel because of threats of storms or rain.”

Mr Skillington said the joeys, cubs, scouts and venturers were delighted with the new facility.

“A scout doesn’t require

a lot of equipment, but just being able to have a sizeable indoor space to run programs rain, hail or shine will make a big difference. It’s fantastic and we have a big open space and plenty of grass.”

With the precinct also home to the State Emergency Service, Mr Skillington said it was a great opportunity to forge community connections.

“We’ve already spoken to the SES – it’s fantastic to be visible.

“Part of the scouts program is to give back to the community, so we do really hope we can work with them,” Mr Skillington said.

The Kallangur Scouts’ grand opening runs from 9am-1pm on Saturday, February 12 at their new premises at 9 Ogg Rd, Murrumba Downs.

There will be equipment demonstrations, a sausage sizzle and the chance to sign on to the group.

Mr Skillington said parents could offset the cost of membership with Fair Play vouchers.

Preparations for events in 2022 are ramping up in the Moreton Bay Region, starting with one of Samford’s favourite events after the expected peak of the Omicron COVID-19 strain.

“After a tough year for many families and businesses, we want to try and start 2022 in Samford by bringing everyone together for a celebration of our community through music and food,” Mayor Flannery said.

RECONSTRUCTION work to ease flooding issues at the intersection of Henry and Dohles Rocks roads at Griffin is expected to start in the middle of this year.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery said the $10.7 million project would improve flood immunity and upgrade the road quality thanks to a $4 million contribution from the Federal Government.

“This isn’t a nip and tuck procedure, it’s a full-on reconstruction for Griffin’s two main arterial roads, so locals can get on with their lives,” he said.

“Dohles Rocks and Henry roads are the two main entry and exit points from Griffin and they’re often heavily affected by traffic on the Bruce Highway and major flooding given how low lying they are.

Mayor Flannery said the overhaul would include raising the level of the road and constructing culverts to significantly improve the flood immunity of both roads, as well as upgrading the road surface and installing traffic signals at the intersection.

Federal Petrie MP Luke Howarth said families would have better access to the region once the project was complete.

“Griffin’s no longer a young emerging suburb of Moreton Bay,” he said.

“It needs infrastructure like this to cater for the growth.”

Deputy Mayor and Division 4 Councillor Jodie Shipway said the project coincided with construction of the Griffin Sports Complex on Henry Rd. “This will be a major part of the future road network for the region in conjunction for the planned Moreton Connector and it will help improve safety for locals,” Cr Shipway said.

Work is expected to begin in midto-late 2022.

Iconic musical to wow audiences STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH ONE of the world’s longestrunning musicals will be thrust back into the spotlight for Moreton Bay residents to enjoy this February.

A cast of actors and musicians, under the guidance of producers Lynch and Paterson, will perform their rendition of the hit stage production Les Misérables at Redcliffe Entertainment Centre from February 18-27.

North Lakes’ Lucas D. Lynch is one half of Lynch and Paterson producers – a production company he formed a decade ago with friend Samantha Paterson, whom he met at Redcliffe Entertainment Centre.

With a cast of 27 actors from across South East Queensland, Mr Lynch said Les Misérables would be a “ripper of a show”.

“I will be conducting the orchestra on the night, and I want the music to sink into people’s soul, right

from the first note to the very last.”

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, amidst the French Revolution, this timeless story of intertwined destinies reveals the power of compassion and the quiet evil of indifference to human suffering.

Mr Lynch is hoping for a big turnout at each show.

“The Redcliffe Entertainment Centre is one of our favourite venues to perform at, which is why we keep coming back,” he said. “We love the Moreton Bay crowds because they are wonderful people and great patrons of the arts.”

Forging firm friendships A GROUP connecting older women is building friendships and a sense of connection.

The Mitchelton Older Women’s Network has been meeting at venues in the Moreton Bay Region and Brisbane’s north for more than 20 years and convenor Judith Heindorff said it had provided a vital connection for members during the pandemic.

“All of us have come into the group as strangers – we start talking and catching up, it’s so friendly,” Mrs Heindorff said.

“The aim of our group is to provide information to women relating to a healthy outlook on ageing

A recent catch-up at the Arana Leagues Club saw members swapping tech knowledge and Mrs Heindorff said that was typical of the spirit of co-operation and collaboration.

“We may be older, but that doesn’t mean we sit down and do nothing – we all live our own lives and keep ourselves busy.”

Members are typically aged over 60, but Mrs Heindorff said some younger women in semi-retirement joined to discover a new community connection.

“We’re very friendly.”

G'DAY all, Find the bait and you'll find the fish. Find the birds and you'll find the fish.

One of the easiest ways to find bait schools is to look for the seabirds circling above and diving down to snatch up an unlucky baitfish. Feeding birds can be seen from quite long distances away, therefore making locating activity much easier. Once you get closer, you'll hopefully see white water from feeding fish as they break the surface.

While these scenarios appear chaotic, the fish beneath the surface are nearly always working together to keep the panicked baitfish packed tightly together and in one school. A common mistake anglers make when they find this happening is to roar the boat into the middle of the feeding frenzy and begin casting, only to find the action immediately stop and the dozens, (sometimes hundreds), of savagely feeding fish, disappear leaving only empty seas because the boat has broken up the bait school.

To maximise your chances at connecting to a fish in these situations, stay off the school and cast to the edges of the baitball or feeding area.

This presents as a straggler separated from the safety in numbers security of the school.

And don't be shy about letting your offering sink prior to retrieval. While we're looking at all the surface action, fish are working at surprising depths beneath. Water depth permitting, predators can be five or six metres below what we're seeing on the surface.

There's a huge amount of co-

ordination and activity going on down there. Trying to keep a lid on our excitement can be difficult when the surface is being smashed to foam – baitfish are showering from the water and the birds are adding their antics into the mix. But if we can think calmly and visualise what's going on underneath what we're looking at, we markedly increase our chances of presenting an offering that will be accepted.

FISHING REPORT • Rivers and creeks have been producing prawns and a few are just starting to appear with some increased consistency outside the mouths and the bays.

• The odd Threadfin Salmon being caught and they should be haunting the prawn once they start to increase in numbers.

• Summer whiting are still patchy but the results are there for those willing to put in the time and cover the ground, with some quality fish being caught when the schools can be located.

• Flathead still consistent around the Redcliffe peninsula.

• Once again, squire and snapper on the inshores, off the rocky points and the occasional fish off the jetties up to the mid-50cm mark.

• A few schools of mackerel seen feeding in Bramble Bay this week and also starting to reappear off the inshore reefs, jetties and also further afield in the bay for the boaties. Spotties in numbers shouldn't be too far away.

• Mangrove Jack in the canals and the rivers and creeks.

• Several very nice land-based Jewfish caught in Bramble Bay and the same with Cobia.

• Mud and sand crabs in Bramble Bay, Deception Bay and in the rivers and creeks.

OUR coastlines are always changing naturally, particularly near surf bars. It is part of what makes our coastline unique.

There are plenty of places that I grew up fishing on Moreton and North Stradbroke Islands that simply no longer exist.

Coastlines can change rapidly in response to heavy weather.

Last year, Bribie Island broke through opposite Golden Beach, but the opening proved to be short-lived.

Spring tides in combination with swells from ex-tropical cyclone Seth have resulted in a breakthrough in the same area and a permanent North and South Bribie Island is now a distinct reality. It was always a question of not if – but when. Previous research by QUT identified that during the past 60 years, the eastern shoreline of the northern part of Bribie Island has retreated landward by approximately 75m. There are also several other potential locations on (south) Bribie Island where further breakthroughs may occur.

Pumicestone Passage itself is relatively young in geological terms and was formed when a river valley that was fed by Elimbah, Bullock and Ningi Creeks was flooded by the rising sea. Since its formation, Pumicestone Passage has been becoming generally shallower as sediment comes in from the various creeks as well as well as from Moreton Bay and the ocean.

The new breakthrough if it remains open is likely to have several impacts on Pumicestone Passage including to the mainland shoreline directly

adjacent to it. The potential impacts are highly unlikely to be catastrophic and impacts to property and infrastructure should be able to be managed.

Pumicestone Passage will still exist, but parts of it will just be a little different.

An earlier modelling report by the Pumicestone Passage Advisory Taskforce identified the types of impacts from the type of breakthrough that has occurred.

These include enhanced sanding up of the existing Caloundra bar and the area directly around it, increased tidal range between Golden Beach and Halls Creek, and increased wave activity in the passage directly adjacent to the new entrance.

In terms of fish and fish habitats, there are likely to be changes in the distribution of seagrass in Pumicestone Passage and this may impact the distribution of juvenile fish.

Shoreline erosion may result in some areas causing more trees to fall into the water which may provide some additional fish habitat. Some coffee rock may be exposed, which is great habitat for many species. More sandy shoals are likely to form in and around the new entrance.

Time will tell whether the new breakthrough will remain open, but long-term modelling has always predicted ongoing erosion that will lead to a new entrance forming.

THEY look like they are straight out of a sci-fi movie and from another planet, but Venus flytraps are among Earth’s most clever plants.

The experts at Bunnings have put together a guide for growing these carnivorous plants, which are experts in evolution.

Most have evolved to survive in situations where soil holds little or no nutrition, finding their own food by catching and decomposing small insects.

Venus flytraps are perhaps among the most fascinating of the carnivorous plants, and they are surprisingly easy to grow.

They are very low-growing herbaceous perennials. That means the plants die back in winter and have unusual leaves.

The leaves have two distinct

sections – the horizontal leaf and the upright trap on the end.

The plant will also produce leaves of different forms at different times of the year, so do not be surprised to see your plant go through a range of changes as it grows.

The leaves shoot from an underground bulb-like structure.

As the weather becomes cooler, the leaves shrivel up and turn black. Many people think they have killed their flytrap at this stage, but it is just going into its winter dormancy and will reshoot in spring.

The trap is an ingenious mechanism. Tiny hairs trigger the trap to close when an insect brushes against them, trapping the insect inside. The insect is then dissolved by digestive juices emitted by the trap, reducing it to liquid fertiliser.

To trigger the trap, two hairs need to be touched within 20 seconds of each other. Then, when the trap closes, the hairs need to be triggered five more times for the digestive cycle to start.

HOW TO GROW A VENUS FLYTRAP

The plant must have at least four hours of direct sun daily to grow and colour well. In very hot conditions, it may need to be watched carefully and given some afternoon sun protection.

If the plant is indoors, position it on a windowsill that receives sun all day.

Your plant must be kept moist, not wet. It will need to have a cool period during its winter dormancy. Do not water your flytrap from the top – stand it in a small saucer of water instead.

If you are not growing the plant for seed, cut flower stems off as soon as they appear. The plant uses a lot of energy to flower, meaning the traps will be smaller.

As tempting as it may be, do not trigger the traps for fun.

Closing the trap uses a lot of energy, and each trap can only close 3–5 times.

Do not feed your Venus flytrap with fertiliser. It gets all the nutrition it requires from catching and digesting bugs.

But if your plant is indoors, you may have to manually feed it small insects to keep it healthy.

RE-POTTING A VENUS FLYTRAP

A Venus flytrap usually grows in damp, slightly acid soil.

When it comes time to re-pot, experts recommend a variety

of complicated DIY blends, but you can just use straight peat moss.

The most important thing to remember is to avoid using material that contains extra fertilisers, and do not add any as they will kill the plant.

When selecting a pot, go for something that has good depth to allow for downward root development.

Older, healthy plants will produce ‘pup’ plants around their base. Carefully separate the pups when re-potting and place in a suitable mix.

How the mill shaped a community STORY KYLIE KNIGHT PETRIE as we know it, could have been vastly different if the Petrie Mill had not come to town.

North Pine Historical Society president Judy Dohle said the township flourished because of the mill, which built homes and had a hand in the development of Lake Kurwongbah and the Pine Rivers Fire Station.

“The whole of Pine, after World War II, was dead up until then. Petrie grew in population and people did come up and move in to get

jobs,” Mrs Dohle said.

Back then, Petrie was a small township with about 20 houses, a railway station, post office, small school, two churches, general store, baker, butcher, school of arts hall, a hotel and two bank agencies.

By 1952, when the foundations were being laid at the mill, 60 company houses and a single men’s hostel for 40 men had been constructed. The APM sports oval was also built at this time, using spoil excavated for the mill’s foundations.

But many do not realise,

the whole operation could have been built at Eagle Farm, instead of Petrie. In 1946, Australian Paper Manufacturers Ltd’s Managing Director Sir Herbert Gepp appointed Gus Gehrmann to buy land for a new mill under the guise of the top-secret ‘Operation Moo Cow’.

He identified two potential sites – one at Eagle Farm and the other at Petrie.

Weighing up the cost of building in the city versus the country, and taking into consideration the potential of expansion, Gepp decided on Petrie. The

site was about 250ha and was occupied by two dairy farms. The mill’s construction started in 1951 but stopped in 1952 due to a recession gripping Australia.

When conditions improved in 1955, it recommenced with gusto. The mill was officially opened on December 6, 1957, by Prime Minister Robert Menzies. He was accompanied by his wife Dame Pattie Menzies and other guests included Premier Frank Nicklin and APM Chairman of Directors E. Telford Simpson.

For more than 50 years, the mill was known for its ‘Petrie spirit’ and sense of community. From its construction to closure, it employed about 5000 people.

At its peak in the early 1960s, it had a staff of more than 500. In its final year of operation, it employed 222.

The mill operated around the clock, with three eighthour shifts. It never needed to advertise for workers because when vacancies became available, they were filled by family members or friends of workers.

“Just about everyone that

lived in Pine Rivers had a relative or member of the family that worked at the mill,” Mrs Dohle recalled.

Her father, husband, brothers and other members of the extended family worked there. In 1986, APM was renamed Amcor and the following year the mill celebrated 30 years of operation. The company announced the closure of the mill in February 2013, with production ceasing on September 6, after 56 years of continuous production.

Junior Classic double for siblings MANATO and Haruhi Nakatani made the fifth Cameron Smith Junior Classic (CSJC) a family affair at the Wantima Country Club.

The brother and sister, from Surfers Paradise, won the top boys and girls prizes in the rescheduled tournament at the course in Brendale last month.

Manato, 17, shot a two-under par 68, on a day of heavy showers and blustery wind, to land the boys’ title at the second attempt.

Sister Haruhi, 15, birdied the first play-off hole to beat Tuuki Takada, from Southport, after both had rounds of 71.

It was Haruhi’s second victory in the CSJC having won in 2019 and being runner-up in 2020.

“Thanks to (Classic organisers) Ken McKay and Shane Johnsson for their help throughout the year," he said. “Thanks to all the sponsors, it means a lot to the event and to support Wantima Country Club.

"It feels like only yesterday I was there with some cut-down clubs, following Dad around.

MORETON Bay United Jets will launch their pre-season program at Rochedale on Saturday.

Jets face the hosts in round one of the Inter City Cup, an annual summer tournament before the start of the NPL and FQPL fixtures.

The Under 23s kick-off at 3pm and Seniors at 7pm, against the host club, hoping to reclaim the trophy won in 2020.

Jets then face fellow NPL side Gold Coast United on February 12 and Brisbane City, promoted to the NPL last season, on February 19. Games at 1pm and 5pm.

Cam lands tour record STORY NICK CROCKFORD CAMERON Smith, who learned to play golf at Wantima Country Club, is today on the fairways in Saudia Arabia, having already achieved one of his major goals for 2022.

The 28-year-old, pictured, was the talk of the golf world after winning the Sentry Tournament of Champions with a US PGA Tour record 34 under par.

Former Bray Park resident Smith beat world number one Jon Rahm by one shot in a thrilling head-tohead battle over the final 18 holes in Hawaii last month.

A 1m putt on the final green earned Smith US$1.476 million and lifted him 11 places into the world’s top 10 for the first time.

John Victorsen, professional at Wantima in Brendale, said it was Smith’s “greatest win”.

Ken McKay, founder of the Cameron Smith Junior Classic, said “when it’s effectively head-to-head, in a match-play situation, he’s unstoppable”.

Smith, who is still a member at Wantima, said on pgatour.com: “That was one of my goals this year to get into the top 10. It’s

nice that’s done and dusted now hopefully I can keep cruising up those world rankings.

“One of the big goals is to make it to Atlanta for the Tour Championship (top 30 money-winners).

And I definitely want to be on the Presidents Cup team.”

He was also partnered by Hollywood A-lister Mark Walhberg in the pro-am before the following Sony Open in Honolulu two weeks ago, but missed the cut and his world ranking slipped to 11.

He is currently in the Saudi International at the Royal Greens Golf and Country Club (February 3-6).

“It’s an evolution,” said Grant Field, who has coached Smith since he was 10, “Now I think it’s confidence being on the world stage and familiarity with courses.”

Field, who is based on the Sunshine Coast, coaches his star pupil using videos and live streaming from the driving ranges Smith uses in the States.

“I think everyone here knows what’s next, I’m going to smash that Michael Zerafa,” Hardman said after beating Adam Stowe in his last fight.

Hardman added he wanted to give “Australia the pleasure” of seeing him “bounce his gloves” off Zerafa.

Melbourne-based Zerafa countered in an Australian Boxing Central interview saying: “I just want to go out there and knock him out and put it all to rest.

“Skills pay the bills and he’s got none of that.”

Hardman, 25, is undefeated in 12 professional fights, with 10 not going the distance. He also has the Australian middleweight belt and WBO and IBF Australasian and Oriental titles.

Zerafa, 29, has the WBA Oceania Middleweight title and a record of 29 wins from 33 professional fights.

JOSH Hands had no plans to put his feet up over summer. In fact, he has spent hours every day pacing around a snooker table.

The teenager from North Lakes has practiced hard for a trip to Sheffield – the spiritual home of world snooker – in February.

Hands, 16, is one of four Australians in the World Snooker Federation (WSF) Junior (Under 18) Championships and WSF World Championships in the UK. Described as the “most significant amateur competitions held globally”,
