PCYC gets $5m boost STORY NICK CROCKFORD CABOOLTURE could have a new $12 million PCYC by the end of next year.

It follows a Federal Government pledge of $5 million for the project, matching the State Government’s contribution. Moreton Bay Region Council is giving $2.5 million.

A vacant block in King St, beside the new Caboolture Police Station, will be the PCYC’s new base, replacing the current 40-year-old building in Toovey St. The location is a more central and accessible, will improve the organisation’s service delivery and create 83 jobs in construction and nine when finished.

PCYC Queensland Chief Executive Officer Mitch Ryder hoped the new PCYC would be operating

by December 2023.

“Having a facility here with everything from after school care to sports, gymnastics allows us to grow our membership and reach more kids,” Mr Ryder said.

PCYC Caboolture has more than 1000 members and families through activities such as gymnastics, boxing, martial arts and

Salute to frontline heroes

FRONTLINE HEROES THROUGHOUT the COVID-19 pandemic there have been frontline heroes working hard to provide essential services. Here we shine a light on some of them.

LATE deliveries due to supply issues has meant staff from Drakes Pumicestone are working extra hours to ensure shelves are filled.

Store Manager Paul Graham has praised his team for “going above and beyond” to ensure they can continue meeting the needs of their local community.

“We’re all facing the same challenges when it comes to getting stock,” he said.

“Most of our deliveries are two days behind because the stock suppliers are also having COVID go through their production facilities.

“We might have a truck that is due to arrive at 2pm, but then we get a message to say it won’t be arriving until the next morning, so I then have to phone everyone and change rosters.

“My team has been amazing and I say a big thank you for going above and beyond to keep the store going.

“A lot of my staff have gone from working 10-15 hours a week to 38 hours, and in some cases, more.”

Mr Graham said his customers had also been very understanding.

THROUGHOUT the pandemic, the team from Terry White Chemmart Narangba have been on the frontline ensuring their community stays healthy.

In a world where everything can change in a moment, Manager Mitchell Petersen said his team adapted quickly to any adjustments so they could continue providing the best health advice.

“The pharmacy industry has been rapidly evolving

since the start of the pandemic, incorporating new technologies and COVID-safe ways of providing services,” he said.

“Our biggest priority now is the health of the community and our team, so we are embracing the new changes as they come, but there is sometimes a lot to learn in a short time period.

She said the support her team was providing helped ease anxiety in the children and also their parents.

“Parents need us so they can work from home, as this is very difficult to do when you have a baby, toddler or three-year-old that seeks their attention throughout

most popular inquiries lately so we’ve had to make some adjustments to ensure we can cater to these while continuing to provide our standard high level of patient care.”

Customers have certainly felt cared for and have shown their gratitude by leaving gifts.

“Over the Christmas period we felt very spoiled by all the cards, chocolates and goodies we received,” Mr Petersen said.

Digging in for koala habitat

Library’s outdoor upgrade overdue

GUBBI GUBBI elder Dr Eve Fesl is creating a lasting environmental legacy in Burpengary East with the help of the Queensland Koala Crusaders.

Dr Fesl is working with Crusaders’ volunteers to restore and increase koala habitat on acreage she bought with husband Franz Fesl decades ago.

While much of the property is bushland, volunteers from QKL are clearing weeds and planting new koala-friendly trees to sustain local populations.

Preserving native wildlife is a cause close to Dr Fesl’s heart – she was a member of Victoria’s Save the Kangaroo Committee back in the 1970s.

“I was president of the kangaroo committee and we managed to get kangaroo culling banned in Victoria,” Dr Fesl recalled.

Closer to home, the first Indigenous person to receive a PhD from an Australian university wants to

Queensland Koala Crusaders ambassador Kurt Jones, who organised the signs, hopes they will raise awareness of the role motorists can play in keeping native wildlife safe.

Mr Jones, who founded not-for-profit organisation Co-Exist, which engages young people in environ-

mental issues, introduced Dr Fesl to the Queensland Koala Crusaders.

“We’re working with Eve in collaboration to develop a wildlife conservation centre with the vision of running tours and educational programs,” Mr Jones said.

“We want the next generation to step up.”

Queensland Koala Crusaders president Linda Barnes said private landowners held the key to pre-

serving and increasing precious koala habitat.

“It’s not realistic to stop development - 70 percent of established and potential habitat in Queensland is privately owned or leased,” Ms Barnes said.

“Public land tends to be at risk of development – and with all the development on private land we need to give these animals some place to go.”

Ms Barnes said planting

new trees was crucial to supporting koala populations and creating links with existing habitat.

She said it took between 24 and 36 months from planting for a tree to be viable to support a koala.

Bancroft State MP Chris Whiting, who has helped plant trees on Dr Fesl’s property, said all levels of government had a part to play in boosting habitat for native wildlife.

A REFURBISHED outdoor area at Burpengary Library will pave the way for additional programs and create a more useful space for patrons.

Moreton Bay Regional Council awarded the $484,000 contract for the project to Kimini Constructions with work scheduled to start this month.

The existing roof over the outdoor area will be replaced by a new weatherproof structure, air conditioning and ceiling fans will be installed and a new moveable wall will be built to separate meeting and children’s areas.

Cr Mark Booth (Div 2) said the upgrade would improve the courtyard by to the children’s area and support more programs.

“Libraries are no longer just somewhere to loan out books,” he said. “They have got multiple uses in this day and age.”

Cr Mick Gillam (Div 8) said of the region’s libraries he found Burpengary looking “a bit tired and in need of some work”.

Award for 24 years service

Top honour for Olympic star OLYMPIC gold medallist Kaylee McKeown, who went to St Paul's Lutheran Primary School in Caboolture and trained at Burpengary, as been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to sport in the Australia Day Honours McKeown’s formative career was at Australian Crawl in Burpengary with junior development coach Jodie Morgan and head coach Chris Mooney, who she joined at USC on the Sunshine Coast.

Mooney also coached McKeown to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she won gold in the women's 4x100m medley relay and 100m and 200m backstroke, as well as bronze in the mixed 4x100m medley relay. It followed silver in the 400m medley relay at the 2019 World Swimming Championships There was also gold in 50m backstroke, silver in the 100m backstroke and 4x100m medley relay and bronze in the 200m backstroke at the Youth Olympic Games in 2018.

McKeown also earned a silver medal at the 2017 World Swimming Championships in the mixed 400m medley relay.

She was named Oceania Female Swimmer of the Year and Female Swimmer of the Year, Swammy Awards in 2020.

Dr Simon Hooton, from Narangba, has received an OAM on Australia Day for service to swimming and the community following roles with Swimming Queensland for 17 years and with local swim clubs in Central Queensland.

His service to the community relates to roles with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners as examiner and assessor, Fellow (1984) and member (1983-2016).

Mr Sutherland was charged and suspended as Mayor in late 2019.

The allegations centred on a property he owned at Burpengary and the upgrade of the road on which it was located. It was also alleged he lobbied councillors in relation to a planning scheme.

When asked if he would have preferred the legal process to continue and have received a ‘not guilty’ verdict, he said no.

Former mayor’s charges dropped FORMER Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland is calling for a commission of inquiry or a Royal Commission after corruption charges against him were dropped.

The Director of Public Prosecutions officially dropped the charges – two counts of misconduct in public office - in a hearing in Brisbane Magistrate’s Court on January 20. It followed an investigation by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC).

Former Mayor Allan Sutherland. to proceed with the charges and offered no evidence’.

He said it differed from ‘insufficient evidence’, as no evidence was offered.

“I believed right from the start there was no evidence, there were a lot

of assumptions made by the CCC but there was no evidence,” he said.

Mr Sutherland said the saga had been an ‘assault on the democratic process’ to remove a mayor who had been elected seven times and in office for 25 years.

“I was put in by the people and should have been taken out by the people,” he said.

He also questioned the way the investigation was conducted.

“I’m not going to stop until I get to the bottom of it. I don’t want any more people being persecuted in this

way,” Mr Sutherland said.

“They don’t understand the massive ramifications that happen for a council when a mayor is removed, and also on those people and their families.

“I believe there are serious answers I need for closure and I won’t rest until I get those answers. I have a lot to offer any inquiry. I want to be involved and I want to get the answers.”

He said an inquiry might go some way to repair his reputation but conceded some people would always think “where there’s

smoke, there’s fire”.

“I believe the state of Queensland deserves much better than what we’re getting from the CCC, they should have no faith in that organisation whatsoever,” Mr Sutherland said.

Last week CCC Chair Alan MacSporran resigned after pressure from the Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee and Local Government Association of Queensland, among others.

Mr Sutherland, 65, said he had no plans to return to local government.

Briefs New footpath Work will soon start on a new 1.6km footpath along Bribie Island Rd at Ningi, between Bestmann and Aylward Rds. The Federal Government is giving $500,000 for the council project which will take about six weeks.

Highway upgrade Work has started on the $19 million D’Aguilar Highway safety improvement project between Sandy Creek and Kilcoy, which will include widening from Neurum Rd to Sandy Creek Rd and Arnolds Rd to Scrubby Creek.

STORY JODIE POWELL BRIBIE Island’s Graham Gibb received the top gong in Moreton Bay Regional Council’s 2022 Australia Day Awards, in a streamlined program with just two categories – Citizen of the Year and Mayor’s Community Spirit.

Mr Gibb said he was proud to be Citizen of the Year and equally proud to be part of an amazing community.

“The best thing about this community that I can think of is knowing that if you put your hand up when the going gets tough there’s always someone there to grab it,” he said.

As a senior radio officer with Volunteer Marine Rescue Bribie Island for more than a decade, Mr Gibb plays a vital role in protecting people enjoying Moreton Bay and supporting crews on the water.

Having worked for the NSW Road Traffic Authority for about 40 years, Mr Gibb relished the chance to use his skills with Marine

Mrs Brooks said the award reflected the commitment of the entire organisation, not just her own.

“You really have to see me as representing about 100 volunteers who do all the hard work,” she said.

“Thank you to all the people who really should be standing here for the work that was done.”

Her dedication has helped thousands of people across the region, with Bribie U3A helping establish branches at Beachmere and Caboolture.

As well as her work with U3A, Mrs Brooks manag-

es the Masters and Apprentices annual art and drama exhibition held at the Bribie Island Community Art Centre (BICAS).

Mick Klein’s hard work and dedication established Caboolture Sports Club in 1994, funding its construction by working with venture capitalists and six local sporting groups across softball, touch football, cricket, dog obedience, soccer and rugby union.

Mick served as the club’s first president and helped revive Caboolture Cricket Club when threatened with closure in the 1980s.

Thanks to Mick’s passion to help, the six foundation clubs reach their goals and receive funding from Caboolture Sports Club to help provide a raft of excellent facilities.

The club delivers more than $1.9 million in cash and in-kind support to the community each year, including more than 300 local sporting clubs, community groups and individual athletes.

As such Mick’s dedication and generosity is also helping grow the next generation of sports stars.

A PASSION for education earnt Bribie’s Ann Brooks a Mayor’s Community Spirit Award at the Moreton Bay Regional Council Australia Day awards.

A love of sport led to Morayfield's Mick Klein being honoured with the same award.

As volunteer with the Bribie Island University of the Third age, Mrs Brooks served as president for 12 years, with membership tripling under her stewardship from 460 between 2004 and 2016.

Tackle world famous venues at Play It Central SPORTS Central Caboolture’s newest outlet, Play It Central, is officially open.

The interactive and virtual gaming centre is part of a $1 million refurbishment of the venue on the corner of Hasking St and Beerburrum Rd. It has three golf simulators, two racing car simulators, arcade games, a café and bar. It is the first outlet of its kind in Caboolture and Morayfield.

Play It Central caters for groups looking to have fun, as well as serious golfers and aspiring racing car drivers wanting to hone skills.

Hospital project's big year THE $399.5 million Caboolture Hospital Redevelopment Project will reach a number of milestones over the next 12 months.

Works will continue on the new Clinical Services Building (CSB) and the Multi-Storey Carpark, ahead of opening in 2023.

Both buildings are already towering above the construction site perimeter fence and are on track to celebrate their ‘topping out’ ceremonies this year, when they reach the highest point.

Reunited after 10 years STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH ALMOST a decade after he escaped out the front door, Simba the ginger cat has been reunited with his happy owners after being found at RSPCA Dakabin.

Kaitlin and Shaun Thrupp thought they were being pranked when the RSPCA called their Narangba home.

“Getting that phone call was a massive shock,” Mrs Thrupp said.

“My husband answered the phone and kept asking “is this a joke” repeatedly because we honestly thought we would never find him.”

Simba was two when he disappeared from the couple’s Murrumba Downs home in 2012.

“We looked everywhere.

We went and spoke to the neighbours and put up flyers,” Mrs Thrupp said.

“At the time, we also paid the RSPCA, who had a pet detective service, to try and find him but we had no luck.”

As the years passed by, the couple never gave up their search, monitoring missing pet and rescue pages online in the hope Simba would turn up.

Thankfully, the pair had kept their contact details up to date on Simba’s microchip, so when he did arrive at the RSPCA staff were able to contact his owners right away.

Simba has now settled in back at home with his family, which has grown to include a six-month-old baby, two additional cats and one dog.

Grant helps TAFE class

ROTARY Caboolture’s biggest fundraiser of the year is helping to start a new business venture.

The club’s Christmas Trailer Raffle had record ticket sales and was won by local couple Robyn and Michael, who had been out of work for 12 months for health reasons.

They planned to start a lawn mowing, garden care and external cleaning business and were looking for a second-hand trailer.

On a visit to Morayfield Shopping Centre they saw the Rotary raffle for the trailer filled with items, including a high pressure cleaner and blower and decided to buy a book of tickets.

STUDENTS at Compass Caboolture TAFE have been given a helping hand

by Moreton Bay Regional Council.

The TAFE woodworking room has had a new dust extractor installed and kit fit-out thanks to the Local Community Support Grant.

It gives trainees the tools to continue learning and developing skills, and produce saleable items, while they are OHS compliant.

The program produces a range of items the trainees sell at a monthly market as well as stock in Compass Retail Social Enterprises.

Compass provides Skills and Programs for young adults with disabilities working from the Caboolture TAFE.

“We are extremely grateful. Thank you to the club as well as to all the busi-

“My husband and I are over the moon. Having the

chance to win this prize was massive for us, we still pinch ourselves as these things don’t normally happen for us, so we are taking it that this is the start of a better year.”

Club gives students back-to-school packs BRISBANE American Motorcycle Club (BAMC) has given 45 students from the Caboolture region special back-to-school packs.

BAMC used proceeds from its raffles at The Big Fish Tavern Caboolture – and a donation from the tavern itself – to help children and families in need.

its 10th year, helps less fortunate children return to school on the same playing field as classmates.

On January 15 the students, nominated by their schools, were presented with their book packs, shoe vouchers and back packs at Centenary Lakes. The fun day also had rides, a jumping castle, sausage sizzle

and ice cream.

Robyn Moore, the BAMC Social Officer, said the students were from schools in Caboolture and Morayfield.

Race on for J2J early birds QUEENSLAND’S longest running fun run – the Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run – is back and bigger than ever in 2022.

Early Bird registrations for the 2022 Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run will close on Friday, February 4.

The 2022 event will be held on Sunday, July 17 at Pelican Park, Clontarf, but organisers are urging those interested to register early as categories are expected to sell out again this year.

“Last year’s Jetty 2 Jetty was hugely popular,” Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) CEO Shane Newcombe said.

“We had a waiting list a mile long for people wanting to register for sold out race categories.”

The 2022 event will again offer a range of categories suited to runners and walkers of all ages and fitness levels, including 3km, 5km, 10km and 21km (half-marathon).

“After successfully introducing the 10km Elite Wheelchair category in

2021, we are proud to include this as part of the 2022 event program,” Mr Newcombe said.

“MBRIT is committed to taking even further steps to making all of our events more inclusive and accessible.”

Jetty 2 Jetty recently made strides onto the national and international stage by achieving official course certification from AIMS, the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races.

“Our event runners are now eligible to set records and achieve marathon qualification points by participating in the J2J,” Mr Newcombe said.

Mayor Peter Flannery said with the hype of South East Queensland securing the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the achievement of Aussie athletes at Tokyo 2020, the stage was set for the 2022 Jetty 2 Jetty to be the most thrilling one yet.

“Whether you’re a serious runner looking to achieve your best half-marathon, a business looking for a fun corporate event or have simply been inspired by our Olympic athletes − Jetty 2 Jetty is the must-do running event on the Sunshine State calendar.”

Entry prices include official 2022 merchandise with 21km and 10km entrants receiving a J2J singlet, while 3km and 5km entrants will receive a J2J visor. Merchandise is also available for purchase at the time of registration.

Paw Patrol to headline festival

LAKESIDE Raceway will host a fundraiser on Friday for the family of Senior Constable David Masters and Blue Hope.

Senior Constable Masters was killed in June last year while deploying road spikes on the Bruce Highway in Burpengary.

He was based at Deception Bay Police Station and left a widow and son.

Funds will also go to Blue Hope, the organisation supporting police officers with mental health problems.

Around 100 vehicles, including Mad Max cars and Ferraris, are expected at the private event, doing laps and a timed sprint.

It is hoped this will become an annual event supporting different causes, but with Blue Hope being the standard each year.

Iconic musical to wow audiences STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH ONE of the world’s longestrunning musicals will be thrust back into the spotlight for Moreton Bay residents to enjoy this February.

A cast of actors and musicians, under the guidance of producers Lynch and Paterson, will perform their rendition of the hit stage production Les Misérables at Redcliffe Entertainment Centre from February 18-27.

North Lakes’ Lucas D. Lynch is one half of Lynch and Paterson producers – a production company he formed a decade ago with friend Samantha Paterson, whom he met at Redcliffe Entertainment Centre.

With a cast of 27 actors from across South East Queensland, Mr Lynch said Les Misérables would be a “ripper of a show”.

Accompanying the actors will be a 20-piece orchestra featuring the Cadenza Chamber Players.

“The soundtrack to Les Misérables is such an unbelievable score, and having a 20-piece orchestra there instead of playing a background track just adds that little extra something to the performance,” Mr Lynch said.

“I will be conducting the orchestra on the night, and I want the music to sink into people’s soul, right

from the first note to the very last.”

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, amidst the French Revolution, this timeless story of intertwined destinies reveals the power of compassion and the quiet evil of indifference to human suffering.

Mr Lynch is hoping for a big turnout at each show.

“The Redcliffe Entertainment Centre is one of our favourite venues to perform at, which is why we keep coming back,” he said. “We love the Moreton Bay crowds because they are wonderful people and great patrons of the arts.”

Twelve shows will be staged at Redcliffe Entertainment Centre, including four matinees.

THEY look like they are straight out of a sci-fi movie and from another planet, but Venus flytraps are among Earth’s most clever plants.

The experts at Bunnings have put together a guide for growing these carnivorous plants which are experts in evolution.

Most have evolved to survive in situations where soil holds little or no nutrition, making their own food by catching and decomposing small insects.

Venus flytraps are perhaps among the most fascinating of the carnivorous plants, and they are surprisingly easy to grow.

They are very low-growing herbaceous perennials. That means the plants die back in winter and have unusual leaves.

The leaves have two distinct

sections – the horizontal leaf and the upright trap on the end.

The plant will also produce leaves of different forms at different times of the year, so do not be surprised to see your plant go through a range of changes as it grows.

The leaves shoot from an underground bulb-like structure.

As the weather becomes cooler, the leaves shrivel up and turn black. Many people think they have killed their flytrap at this stage, but it is just going into its winter dormancy and will reshoot in spring.

The trap is an ingenious mechanism. Tiny hairs trigger the trap to close when an insect brushes against them, trapping the insect inside. The insect is then dissolved by digestive juices emitted by the trap, reducing it to liquid fertiliser.

To trigger the trap, two hairs need to be touched within 20 seconds of each other. Then, when the trap closes, the hairs need to be triggered five more times for the digestive cycle to start.

HOW TO GROW A VENUS FLYTRAP

The plant must have at least four hours of direct sun daily to grow and colour well. In very hot conditions, it may need to be watched carefully and given some afternoon sun protection.

If the plant is indoors, position it on a windowsill that receives sun all day.

Your plant must be kept moist, not wet. It will need to have a cool period during its winter dormancy. Do not water your flytrap from the top – stand it in a small saucer of water instead.

If you are not growing the plant for seed, cut flower stems off as soon as they appear. The plant uses a lot of energy to flower, meaning the traps will be smaller.

As tempting as it may be, do not trigger the traps for fun.

Closing the trap uses a lot of energy, and each trap can only close 3–5 times.

Do not feed your Venus flytrap with fertiliser. It gets all the nutrition it requires from catching and digesting bugs.

But if your plant is indoors, you may have to manually feed it small insects to keep it healthy.

RE-POTTING A VENUS FLYTRAP

A Venus flytrap usually grows in damp, slightly acid soil.

When it comes time to re-pot, experts recommend a variety

of complicated DIY blends, but you can just use straight peat moss.

The most important thing to remember is to avoid using material that contains extra fertilisers, and do not add any as they will kill the plant.

When selecting a pot, go for something that has good depth to allow for downward root development.

Older, healthy plants will produce ‘pup’ plants around their base. Carefully separate the pups when re-potting and place in a suitable mix.

G'DAY all, Find the bait and you'll find the fish. Find the birds and you'll find the fish.

One of the easiest ways to find bait schools is to look for the seabirds circling above and diving down to snatch up an unlucky baitfish. Feeding birds can be seen from quite long distances away, therefore making locating activity much easier. Once you get closer, you'll hopefully see white water from feeding fish as they break the surface.

While these scenarios appear chaotic, the fish beneath the surface are nearly always working together to keep the panicked baitfish packed tightly together and in one school. A common mistake anglers make when they find this happening is to roar the boat into the middle of the feeding frenzy and begin casting, only to find the action immediately stop and the dozens, (sometimes hundreds), of savagely feeding fish, disappear leaving only empty seas because the boat has broken up the bait school.

To maximise your chances at connecting to a fish in these situations, stay off the school and cast to the edges of the baitball or feeding area.

This presents as a straggler separated from the safety in numbers security of the school.

And don't be shy about letting your offering sink prior to retrieval. While we're looking at all the surface action, fish are working at surprising depths beneath. Water depth permitting, predators can be five or six meters, (and deeper), below what we're seeing on the surface.

There's a huge amount of coordination and activity going on down there. Trying to keep a lid on our excitement can be difficult when the surface is being smashed to foam, baitfish are showering from the water and the birds are adding their antics into the mix, but if we can think calmly and visualise what's going on underneath what we're looking at, we markedly increase our chances of presenting an offering that will be accepted.

FISHING REPORT • Rivers and creeks have been producing prawns and a few are just starting to appear with some increased consistency outside the mouths and the bays.

• The odd Threadfin Salmon being caught and they should be haunting the prawn once they start to increase in numbers.

• Summer whiting are still patchy but the results are there for those willing to put in the time and cover the ground with some quality fish being caught when the schools can be located.

• Flathead still consistent around the Redcliffe peninsula.

• Once again, squire and snapper on the inshores, off the rocky points and the occasional fish off the jetties up to the mid 50cm mark.

• A few schools of mackerel seen feeding in Bramble Bay this week and also starting to reappear off the inshore reefs, jetties and also further afield in the bay for the boaties. Spotties in numbers shouldn't be too far away.

• Mangrove Jack in the canals and the rivers and creeks.

• Several very nice land-based Jewfish caught in Bramble Bay and the same with Cobia.

• Mud and sand crabs in Bramble Bay, Deception Bay and in the rivers and creeks.

OUR coastlines are always changing naturally, particularly near surf bars. It is part of what makes our coastline unique.

There are plenty of places that I grew up fishing on Moreton and North Stradbroke Islands that simply no longer exist.

Coastlines can change rapidly in response to heavy weather.

Last year, Bribie Island broke through opposite Golden Beach, but the opening proved to be short-lived.

Spring tides in combination with swells from ex-tropical cyclone Seth have resulted in a breakthrough in the same area and a permanent North and South Bribie Island is now a distinct reality. It was always a question of not if – but when. Previous research by QUT identified that during the past 60 years, the eastern shoreline of the northern part of Bribie Island has retreated landward by approximately 75m. There are also several other potential locations on (south) Bribie Island where further breakthroughs may occur.

Pumicestone Passage itself is relatively young in geological terms and was formed when a river valley that was fed by Elimbah, Bullock and Ningi Creeks was flooded by the rising sea. Since its formation, Pumicestone Passage has been becoming generally shallower as sediment comes in from the various creeks as well as well as from Moreton Bay and the ocean.

The new breakthrough if it remains open is likely to have several impacts on Pumicestone Passage including to the mainland shoreline directly

adjacent to it. The potential impacts are highly unlikely to be catastrophic and impacts to property and infrastructure should be able to be managed.

Pumicestone Passage will still exist, but parts of it will just be a little different.

An earlier modelling report by the Pumicestone Passage Advisory Taskforce identified the types of impacts from the type of breakthrough that has occurred.

These include enhanced sanding up of the existing Caloundra bar and the area directly around it, increased tidal range between Golden Beach and Halls Creek, and increased wave activity in the passage directly adjacent to the new entrance.

In terms of fish and fish habitats, there are likely to be changes in the distribution of seagrass in Pumicestone Passage and this may impact the distribution of juvenile fish.

Shoreline erosion may result in some areas causing more trees to fall into the water which may provide some additional fish habitat. Some coffee rock may be exposed which is great habitat for many species. More sandy shoals are likely to form in and around the new entrance.

Time will tell whether the new breakthrough will remain open, but long-term modelling has always predicted ongoing erosion that will lead to a new entrance forming.

The Irish Foursomes stableford competition will have a shotgun start at 12.30pm at the Lesley Ave course.

The two best scores per team are recorded from

It will be followed by a shootout chipping competition towards the 18th green. There will also be raffles and food.

IronMan Cotter STORY NICK CROCKFORD

HAYDEN Cotter must love a challenge. Why else would he combine competing at national and international level in two sports, with university studies and running a business?

It’s quite a balancing act by the 21-year-old, who grew up in Petrie and swam at Lawnton, but is now in the Belgravia team at Burpengary under his coach of 11 years Harley Connolly.

Three weeks ago (January 14-16), Cotter made his debut in the opening rounds of the elite Nutri-Grain IronMan (swim/ board/paddle/run) at Bondi in Sydney.

All 20 qualifiers were surf lifesavers with Cotter being a member of the Maroochydore club.

Last week he was in Adelaide at the National Open Water Swimming Championships in the 10km (January 29) and 5km (on his birthday, January 30).

This week (February 4-6) Cotter will be in the final rounds of the Nutri-Grain IronMan Series on the Gold Coast.

“It (Bondi) was a step above anything else,” said Cotter, who was 18th before round three was cancelled due to beach closures after the Tonga Tsunami.

“But great to be out there, racing and learning, seeing how the others do things.”

Cotter, is part of USC’s High Performance Student Athlete program and has a Tier 2 Scholarship in the 2022 Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship and Mentoring Program.

This provides support for 12-14 months and $5000 to

help buy equipment such as open water swimsuits, and skis and boards for lifesaving events.

USC High Performance Sport Director Professor Brendan Burkett said it was “well-deserved recognition for such a hard-working swimmer”.

Cotter is halfway through a Bachelor of Business/ Bachelor of Commerce

(Accounting) degree at USC, studying part-time to accommodate training and competing.

“It’s not going too bad,” he said. “I can do most subjects online, which makes studying a bit easier.”

He is also running Cotter’s Cleaning, a professional house cleaning service he founded and hopes to turn into a franchise.

Swain ready for Premier League challenge BRIBIE resident Elke Swain has conquered Toowoomba’s hockey scene and is now set to test herself in one of Australia’s premier club competitions.

After guiding the Rangeville Bulldogs to five of the last eight Toowoomba A-Grade women’s premierships, Swain will now coach Norths Eagles in the Brisbane Premier League.

The 2022 Brisbane Premier League will see Swain up against coaches such as former Australian Hockeyroos and Kookaburras players Angie Lambert, Melanie Wells, Greg Browning and Damien Seeto.

“Some of my goals and expectations for 2022 is firstly to get our best team on the pitch as often as possible, and to work on our fitness and basic skills,” Swain said.

As well as leading Queensland Country to consecutive Australian Country Hockey Championships gold medals in 2019 and 2020, Swain is coach of the Australian Masters Bribie-based hockey coach Elke Swain.

Building new era for Caboolture clubs WORK has started on a project five years in the making at Caboolture Rugby Union and Caboolture Touch.

The clubhouse, which stood at Petersen Rd for more than 30 years, has been demolished to make way for a new $4m centre.

The old clubhouse was seen as having outdated facilities and accessibility issues.

Caboolture Rugby Union hopes to be celebrating its 40th anniversary with the opening of the new clubhouse by the end of 2022.
