Perils of breeding season STORY NICK CROCKFFORD THE figures tell a sad story – 55 koalas have been killed by cars, disease or dogs in this region since August 1.

Those are just the ones known to Moreton Bay Koala Rescue and Pine Rivers Koala Care. The real toll may be higher.

Anzac Avenue continues to be a hot spot particularly on the coastal side at Scarborough, Kippa-Ring and Rothwell, as well as through Kallangur.

So too the Bruce Highway off-ramp at Burpengary, Kurwongbah, Whiteside, the Hills District, Petrie, Narangba, North Lakes … the list goes on.

Koalas have also been rescued from street signs, a coffee drive through at North Lakes, pergolas and every species of tree (native and non-native) in backyards.

“If you live in the Moreton Bay Region, the chances are you are going to see a koala in the wild at some stage,” Moreton Bay Koala Rescue Vice-president Mike Fowl-

“If you see a koala in distress, have our number in your phone and call a rescuer.

“Often we get people who ring saying they saw a koala sitting in the road a few

hours ago. Three hours ago is useless.”

Koalas have good hearing and sense of smell, but poor eyesight and with development shrinking koala habitat, education is essential.

“I want to put together a film of what to do if people see a koala in trouble and what we can do to rescue it,” Mr Fowler said.

“Never, ever, ever, ever try to grab and hold a koala. What you see at a sanctuary and the reality of an angry koala are worlds apart. I’ve had a finger broken by a koala biting through welding gloves.

All koalas act differently.

We had one happy to sit on the back seat of someone’s car.”

MBKR has 14 trained volunteer rescuers and 20-25 ambulance drivers to ferry a koala to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital at Beerwah or the RSPCA Animal Care Campus at Wacol.

Rescuers can be at any location in the Moreton Bay Region within 20 minutes.

RODERICK A Cruice Park will be transformed under plans to create a multi-use green space in the heart of Dayboro.

Moreton Bay Regional Council acquired land at the intersection of Heathwood and Williams streets and has been consulting the community about how it would like to see the area used.

As part of the overhaul Council is planning to create better space for weekly and annual markets with improved infrastructure, upgraded walking paths and shady picnic spots and new play spaces and equipment.

As well, the project would deliver a central lawn for events, opportunities for art and cultural heritage recognition and better lighting.

Mayor Peter Flannery said Roderick A Cruice Park had provided a shady retreat since 1970 and it was important residents had input into its future design.

“With the additional land we can expand on the park’s current facilities, create better places and spaces for events for residents and visitors to enjoy, provide inclusive and accessible community facilities and a much-needed space for local business and community organisations to host activities within the town centre,” he said.

‘Tis the season to be carolling THERE are three signature Christmas in the Moreton Bay Region Carols events between now and Christmas, bringing festive fun to venues at North Lakes, Redcliffe and Strathpine.

Redcliffe Christmas Carols is at Moreton Daily Stadium on December 12 and Pine Rivers Christmas Carols is at Pine Rivers Park on December 19.

Each event is on from 4-8pm. Entry is free and tickets are not required.

Making their debut this year are Christmas llamas.

Families can give them a pat and even have their photos taken with them.

There will also be plenty of food trucks to purchase dinner and a stellar line-up of local artists performing Christmas carols. Don’t miss the fireworks at 8pm.

Christmas filled with family fun WATCHING her dad decorate the family home with Christmas lights was a favourite festive season tradition for Strathpine’s Jamie-Lee Scafidi.

And now she’s carrying on the tradition with her own children, aged 9, 4 and 3.

“My dad used to do it when we were kids – I’m obsessed with Christmas,” Ms Scafidi said.

“I plan the display all year, where things are going to go, what else I can add.

“My favourite thing is doing it with my family.

“I do it for my children and all the other children that are local.”

Ms Scafidi starts her build in mid-November – but her Christmas tree inside goes up before Halloween.

“It takes me three weeks to get everything done, so I want to be able to enjoy it as long as I can.”

While she’s been decorating her home for three or four years, Ms Scafidi said she was especially excited this year because the family had recently moved.

“We can access the roof, so it’s completely different this year,” she said.

VEHICLE safety should be number one on the preparation list as people prepare for holiday travel according to Bridgestone Murrumba Downs manager Lee Moore.

Mr Moore said it was important to ensure vehicles were in tip-top condition to prevent accidents.

He said while engine condition was important, tyres were the foundation that had an impact on safety features and vehicle performance.

“Tyres may look fine, but they will be markedly safer, perform better and be more fuel efficient if they are optimally balanced and correctly inflated,” Mr Moore said.

“In fact, running a tyre just 20 per cent under-inflated could increase fuel consumption by as much as 10 per cent – that’s a lot to pay for just a little fresh air.

“Most importantly though, it is plain dangerous.”

Mr Moore said if tyres were not correctly inflated vehicles would not accelerate, brake or steer properly.

“Safety devices like antilock braking systems may not function properly – and driving an under-inflated

Bridgestone Strathpine store manager Rob Cameron said the increasing popularity of caravanning and camping presented another set of challenges for motorists and it was important to ensure vans and boat trailers were roadworthy.

“When caravans and trailers stand in one place for an extended period, their tyres will probably develop a flat spot from the prolonged tyre pressure,” Mr Cameron said.

Boaties should also have their trailers checked, he said.

“Wheel bearings, particularly those on boat trailers which are exposed to salt water, should be checked for corrosion,” Mr Cameron said.

Satellite hopsitals a step closer TWO new satellite hospitals in the Caboolture and Bribie Island region have taken a sizeable step forward.

The State Government has appointed Hutchinson Builders as the managing contractor for the project, which will deliver a total of seven satellite hospitals across the state’s south-east.

“With the contractor announced, the Satellite Hospitals Program team will turn its attention towards details design,” Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said.

Tradies are expected to have “boots on the ground” early in the New Year, the Premier said.

Three Satellite Hospitals, on sites around 1.5ha, will be built in the Moreton Bay Region.

Bribie Island Healthcare Facility will be in First Ave, Bongaree; Caboolture at Rowe St, and Pine Rivers Healthcare Facility at 159-163 Dohles Rocks Rd, Kallangur. Others will be on Brisbane’s southside, Redlands, the Gold Coast and Ipswich.

Construction is expected to start in 2022 and the hospitals to open in 2023.

MORETON BAY BUSINESS EXCELLENCE & INNOVATION AWARDS 2021

Celebrating best of THE ingenuity, resilience and tenacity of businesses across the Moreton Bay Region was celebrated during the gala 2021 Moreton Bay Region Business Excellence and Innovation Awards night on November 19.

About 480 people from the business and broader community came together for the event at Eatons Hill Hotel.

There were 58 finalists across 12 categories, after a record number of businesses from a diverse range of sectors were nominated.

The fourth annual awards program was refreshed to reflect Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Regional Economic Development Strategy, with the introduction of three new categories – Businesswoman of the Year, Food and Agribusiness Excellence, and Advanced Manufacturing Excellence.

The Moreton Bay Region Business Excellence and Innovation Awards were delivered by Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) with sponsorship through its partner Moreton Bay Regional Council.

The winners were decided by 40 judges, who came from a mix of public and private sector organisations from across

South East Queensland, using world-class expertise to assess submissions.

Brendale-based Elexon Electronics won the inaugural Advanced Manufacturing Excellence Award and was named Business of the Year.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery said in the history of the awards, never had a group of businesspeople been so deserving of a celebration.

“As a former small business owner, I never faced anything like COVID but I knew the importance of immediate government intervention to help get businesses through,” Mayor Flannery told the audience.

“We are unusually lucky in this region to work across electoral boundaries and the political divide. So, I want to thank (State MP for Redcliffe) Yvette D’Ath and (Federal MP for Longman) Terry Young and their respective governments for the extra $50 million they pumped into our economy through local projects.

“I also want to thank our new Economic Development team for their constant advocacy on your behalf. But, in particular, I want to thank my Council colleagues for their unanimous and immediate support of our $33 million business support package.

“We now have just under 30,000 local businesses in Moreton Bay Region, and 2700 of those were new business registrations this year alone.

“Those start-ups, partnerships, and small businesses are the engine room that will drive us to a $40 billion economy by 2041.

You helped us achieve a Gross Regional Product of $17.72 billion last financial year.”

MBRIT Chairman Shane Newcombe said the evening was a great chance to celebrate the achievements of the business community – the region’s engine room.

“Business owners and their teams seldom get the chance to celebrate their hard work, ingenuity and the valuable contribution they make to our community. We’re thrilled to give them that opportunity via the awards program and tonight’s gala awards evening,” Mr Newcombe said.

“I wholeheartedly congratulate the finalists and the winners, particularly Business of the Year Elexon Electronics and the winners of our new categories.

They have all cemented their place in history.”

Brendale business shines

A COMPANY founded by a businessman with a passion for the region has won the Exporting Excellence category of this year’s Moreton Bay Business Excellence and Innovation Awards.

Solar Bollard Lighting managing director and founder Mike Arieni was effusive in his praise for the region when he accepted his award at a gala event at the Eatons Hill Hotel.

“Moreton Bay Region is my home and it’s where I’ve settled and it’s where I keep getting drawn back to,” Mr Arieni said.

“I just see the potential in what we have here.

“It’s exciting.

“If you’re not as excited as I am, then you can’t see what’s happening.”

The Brendale-based business also won the category in 2019 and 2018, with last year’s awards cancelled due to COVID-19.

Its products are used in 40 countries, including most recently Kuwait and the Bahamas.

“I’m very proud,” he said.

“It’s our third year in a row,” Mr Arieni said.

“We have a high-quality product and what differentiates us is we custom-design every project.

“That’s why our market has expended rapidly,” he said.

Innovation sparks success THE winners of the top gong at the Moreton Bay Region Business Excellence and Innovation Awards celebrated their win with doughnuts for the office for breakfast.

IT IS time to banish the gender stereotypes associated with technology, according to the inaugural winner of the Moreton Bay Region Businesswoman of the Year.

STEM Punks founder Fiona Holmstrom said encouraging girls to explore careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) was a challenge and she hoped her award would give her a platform to inspire change.

“There is a great gender disparity between men and women in STEM, so that is a challenge that we face every day – to get women into STEM,” Ms Holmstrom said.

“I am delighted to accept this on behalf of all of the girls who, like me, were told computers aren’t for girls, technology’s not for girls, STEM is not for girls.

I’m here to tell you it is, and it is the way of the future.”

Ms Holmstrom founded the world-leading STEM education program STEM Punks for students and teachers in primary and secondary schools in her Samford Valley garage in 2017 and has quickly gained a well-deserved reputation for excellence in the industry and beyond.

“The aim is just to encourage more girls into STEM and to give girls a say and a voice and a platform to enable their future careers and their future job prospects and STEM education does that for them.”

Ms Holmstrom said all businesspeople faced challenges – but there were some additional ones for women, who often juggled family commitments as well.

Award honours program for carers A UNIQUE organisation at Cedar Creek has won the Moreton Bay Region Business Excellence and Innovation not-for-profit Excellence Award.

Established in 2015 by Ronnie and Michael Benbrow, The Carers Foundation is the only charity in Australia providing threeday wellness programs to carers at no cost to them.

In the past six years The Carers Foundation has grown to employ four staff, supported by 20 volunteers.

Ronnier Benbow had dreamed of running a wellness centre for carers since she was a 17-year-old nursing student.

Community newspapers are back.

“It’s taken a lifetime – I has a vision when I was 17, when I was a young nurse because I used to see the carers or families at home caring for their loved one and they were the ones falling apart,” she explains.

“I had a vision back then that I was going to have this wellness centre when I finished nursing.

“A lot of carers reach the end of their tether, they can’t cope any longer, so this is a program to prevent a health crisis breakdown.

We have grown significantly, so we need a new centre and we would love our new wellness centre to be in the Moreton Bay Region.”

The film has picked up a swag of international awards, including best concept and best cinematography at India’s Paradise Film Festival, best comedy short at the Accord Cine Fest and the New Jersey Film Awards and best comedy short film at the Onkyo Films Awards.

It also won best comedy, best trailer and best poster at the Rome International Movie Awards.

With an ensemble cast of four, including Montano, her husband Robert McLachlan, Laura Fois and Pierce Gordon, The Great Salami Breakout follows the comedic adventures of Jake, who with help from mum Maria, escapes from a mental health hospital.

Montano, who directed as well as acted in the film, said the plot was loosely based on a road trip she took with her parents through ru-

ral Gippsland in Victoria, where she grew up.

Her son, Damian, had just been discharged from hospital after treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorder in Melbourne and she took him to visit her parents in Morwell.

Her Italian migrant parents decided a trip to their beach house at Inverloch would speed his recovery.

“We stopped for a snack, dad took a detour to show us walnut trees, we stopped for another snack – a onehour trip took three.

“They’re all happy in the front and in the back, he’s wanting to kill them and I’m trying to calm him down.

“Damian’s in the back getting more and more frustrated and they’re in the front completely oblivious,” Montano laughed.

In The Great Salami Breakout, Montano and McLachlan take on the roles of grandparents – or Nonna and Nonno – to Damian’s character Jake (Gordon), with Fois playing a young Josie.

Bringing the film to fruition was not without its challenges, with COVID restrictions throwing a spanner in the works more

than once and Montano’s Multiple Sclerosis flaring up during filming of car scenes on a green screen in a garage.

“It was a hot day in October and I forgot my lines with the MS,” Montano explained.

“My co-director (Liam Power) sent everyone away and fed me my lines one at a time so we could get through filming.

“He was amazing.”

Agents in the region’s south say property prices will continue to soar over the coming year, with demand outstripping supply.

LJ Hooker Real Estate Albany Creek principal Jason Chandler tips Moreton Bay’s median house price will rise in coming months.

“I predict there’s going to be a 10 percent rise in house prices over the coming year because we are already seeing an influx of buyers from the local area, as well as buyers from the southern states and from overseas,” he said.

“People are wanting to take advantage of the historically low interest rates which makes it more affordable to buy than rent.

“I am seeing upwards of 50

people at open homes and multiple offers on newly listed prices, with some homes receiving around 20 offers after their first viewing.

“I have never seen anything like this in my 25 years’ experience.”

Data from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) shows Moreton Bay’s sales activity has strengthened, with a 5.9 percent rise in the past quarter and a 39 percent rise across the year.

Median house prices for the region are up 6.9 percent and 10.3 percent over the quarter and year respectively.

David Deane Real Estate Strathpine sales director Mark Rumsey said the market was attracting a variety of buyers.

“We are getting a real cross-section of buyers, including first home buyers, locals and investors,” Mr Rumsey said.

TWO new tennis courts at the Samford Parklands and an overhaul of rugby league facilities at Alan Cash Park are expected to be completed in time for the start of next year’s sporting seasons.

Tenders for both projects were awarded at a Council meeting last month, with The Landscape Construction Company to deliver two tennis courts to replace courts removed from Alan Cash Park for extra car parking as part of the Main Street Revitalisation.

Fields at the Samford Stags home turf at Alan Cash Park will be upgraded by Global Turf Projects.

The work will reconfigure the existing rugby league field to include a training area at the eastern end.

It also includes moving field goal posts, new 12m aluminium goal posts and a new back net at the western end of the field.

Mayor Peter Flannery said he hoped both projects would not only provide new facilities for locals, but also attract more tennis and rugby league players to the area.

STEPH Bennett has her hands full as the mother of three children – but they’re even fuller as she cares for hundreds of injured or orphaned wildlife every year.

At any given time, Ms Bennett can be found teaching birds to catch bugs, keeping an eye on orphaned ducklings, introducing magpie geese to each other or on duty feeding Welcome Swallow chicks every 15 minutes.

“He’ll need care for about three months, and fortunately kookaburras adopt babies really well if his own family rejects him.”

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE construction of three vital transport links in the region united communities and boosted visitor numbers, but each faced obstacles to get off the ground.

AJ WYLLIE BRIDGE THE original bridge across the North Pine River opened in 1877 in a bid to provide a more reliable crossing for the community following the construction of the first schoolhouse and police residence and lock-up.

It replaced a ford across the river which was impassable after heavy rain.

The bridge, later known as Sir Arthur’s Bridge, named after Governor Sir Arthur Kennedy who was present at the opening, was 320 feet long in eight spans of 40 feet and 18 feet wide.

It was made largely from ironbark and spotted gum.

The area was prone to flooding after heavy rain and, just 11 years later, the bridge needed serious work.

Some members of the Redcliffe Divisional Board

wanted to replace the bridge, instead of repairing the old one. A motion was carried on October 2 but that motion was rescinded on December 4.

The Pine Divisional Board was requested to invite tenders for the work and a combined meeting of the two boards was held on March 5, 1889 to discuss tenders. A tender from Edward Clarke for 599.15.0 (pounds) was accepted.

The government, Pine and Redcliffe Divisional Boards bore the cost.

The bridge was damaged again during a flood in 1893 and rebuilt three years later.

Plans were again drawn up for a new bridge in December 1934, with construction starting in 1935 and this incarnation of the bridge was named AJ Wyllie Bridge after pioneer Alexander Jackson Wyllie.

He was born in Scotland in 1854 and came to Queensland at the age of nine years and lived at South Pine with his family until the early 1880s, when he moved to North Pine (now Petrie) and mar-

ried Margaret Amelia Cameron in 1883.

His property was located on either side of the main northern railway line.

He was devoted to the North Pine Presbyterian Church of which he was an elder and Sunday school superintendent for 51 years.

Mr Wyllie was a member of the Caboolture Divisional Board and later a member of Redcliffe Shire Council for many years, serving as Chairman on several occasions.

He was a foundation member of North Pine School of Arts and died in 1934.

Construction of the higher bridge, which was built on the downstream side of the old bridge, commenced in 1987.

It was necessary when Gympie Road was widened

to accommodate a four-lane carriageway. In 1988, the bridges were jointly named the A.J. Wyllie Bridge The bridge was again significantly damaged during the 2011 floods. It was rebuilt 1.4m higher than the existing structure to make it more immune to flooding and reopened to traffic in late 2012.

BRIBIE ISLAND BRIDGE THE idea for a bridge was first hatched in 1937 after the completion of the Hornibrook Highway from Brighton to Clontarf, on the Redcliffe peninsula.

The SS Koopa had provided transport to Bribie Island from the mainland for many years before being discontinued and replaced by a vehicle ferry. It relied

on good weather.

In 1955, the government considered a proposal to build a bridge but did not pursue it because of local opposition.

Member for Bribie and then Leader of the Opposition Frank Nicklin promised to build a bridge, if he was returned to office in the 1950s, and the idea gained increased publicity from 1957-59.

On November 17, 1959, it was announced that a bridge would be built.

The bridge was officially opened on October 19, 1963 and became the longest complete pre-stressed concrete bridge in Australia.

The toll was five shillings each way and it took 12 years to pay for the bridge at which point the toll was removed.

HORNIBROOK HIGHWAY A PROPOSAL to build a bridge from Brighton to the Redcliffe peninsula faced many obstacles including finance, design and timber supply before it opened on October 4, 1935.

It took more than three years to build as a private enterprise with Hornibrook carrying the financial and emotion worry of such a big project during particularly tough financial times.

Another problem was securing the large amount of ironbark timber needed for the corbels, girders and decking on the bridge within 15 months.

The viaduct consists of 290, 30 feet spans, two 28 feet six-inch spans and two 24 feet six inch spans, with the total length between the bridge portals of 8806 lineal feet.

Drone arena taking flight A UNIQUE games arena and training centre is capturing the imaginations of drone novices and enthusiasts.

The brainchild of aircraft engineer Darren Stone, Drone-Games is billed as the first of its kind in the world.

Drone-Games was originally a mobile business, visiting schools and other venues with pop-up nets to contain the drones, but Mr Stone was determined to create a more permanent base.

It had its major launch at Redcliffe KiteFest, where more than 700 people immersed themselves in drone activations on day one.

His introduction to drones came when clients of his asset management business, Asset Excellence, began asking if he could conduct inspections of assets in complicated and restricted areas with drones.

Mr Stone saw the potential and also discovered there were many safety aspects to flying drones – even for amateurs.

He said while the games were fun, the venue is also a great way to teach people about flying drones safely.

“It will be great for building teams – they will be given a problem to solve, and then fly the drones to see if their solution works – then they can come back in and refine it,” Mr Stone said.

He wants the arena to be all-inclusive and has installed accessible toilets.

HILLS Festival 2022 is calling on businesses and groups from the area to take this annual celebration to new heights.

Hosted across various sites throughout May 2022, the Hill Festival features events including the very popular Hills Carnivale, which attracts more than 6000 people to the area.

Event organisers Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) wants businesses to start planning how they can be part of the 2022 festival.

“The Hills Festival is the perfect opportunity to not only entertain local families, but to promote this wonderful area visitors from outside the region,” MBRIT Chairman Shane Newcombe said.

A GENEROUS donation from USC Moreton Bay is making life a little easier for vulnerable mums and mums-to-be.

Staff and students at the Petrie campus filled a donation box with baby clothes, nappies and other essential products to donate to A Brave Life, which provides nappy bags to young mums through its Baby Bundle program.

A Brave Life founder Mel Redsell said the items would be given to mothers and mothers-to-be in need, such as teenagers, those affected by domestic violence and homelessness, or those who just need extra help.

“Having these extra products means we can supply them with brand new and good-quality items for their newborn babies,” Mrs Redsell said.

“It means a mum feels equipped with those immediate essentials.

“She feels like she’s got all those things that she needs for her newborn baby to give her confidence and a

“We heard about her incredible donation and connected with her and then she said to us that she wanted to go to university to become a registered nurse, so we offered her support through our mentoring and tutoring program,” Mrs Redsell said.

Ms Adler-Magee said she was grateful for the support offered by A Brave Life.

“They have supported me throughout the past two years by providing a tutor, and Mrs Redsell has helped me gain my confidence as a student while also a single mother, as she was in a very similar situation when she was studying to become a Registered Nurse.”

WHEN self-confessed “frustrated naughty kid” Corey Gieskens was kicked out of home at the age of 12, he never imagined he would go on to become a high school principal.

But Mr Gieskens did just that – starting as a teacher at Pine Rivers State High School – the very school at which he was a troublesome disengaged truant a few decades earlier.

Coming from a “very dysfunctional” family life, Mr Gieskens recalled bouncing between his separated parents from the age of five.

He said that as he approached his teenage years, he was getting “pretty rough around the edges” and was involved in “some pretty ordinary activity”.

“I was wagging school for

a few weeks straight, being really naughty to get attention, and I thought that was a way my father would give it to me,” Mr Gieskens said.

“One day I came home and my dad had packed up my bedroom, put all the boxes in the back of the car and took me to the local police station.

“He told a policeman he would drive the car until the petrol tank was half empty and that’s where he was going to leave me, unless the police found somewhere for me to stay.”

Mr Gieskens was referred to Carinity Orana, which has provided crisis accommodation for homeless teens and teenagers at risk of becoming homeless at Bald Hills for the past 40 years.

His stay of just over 12 months changed his life and Mr Gieskens said if it

was not for Carinity Orana, he believed he would have struggled to survive and likely ended up in prison.

“It was initially a bit scary as a lot of the other kids that were there were a lot more hardened and older,” Mr Gieskens recalled.

“Having youth workers in the house who were there to encourage me regardless of whether I was naughty or not was great, and I attended school the whole time I was there.

“I was very happy there as I was getting the attention that I was craving. I felt loved and I felt really supported there.

“Up until then I hadn’t felt that in my life.”

“The school that I was at during my time at Orana, I went back to as a teacher and some of the staff who taught me were still there.”

The Endeavour Foundation has given the school a special Virtual Reality package, which includes a unique driving simulator it developed.

Endeavour Foundation Service Design Partner Chris Beaumont said for most people learning to drive was considered a rite of passage, but for neurodiverse people or those with a learning disability, systemic and social barriers – or even a lack of confidence – could make getting behind the wheel more challenging.

“I hear from speaking to neurodiverse people that many are worried they may not even be allowed to get a driver’s licence, especially if they have a disability that impacts on their ability to learn – but that’s not the case,” Mr Beaumont said.

Warriors’ warm welcome to country STORY KYLIE KNIGHT TRADITIONAL custodians representing the Kabi Kabi people warmly welcomed the New Zealand Warriors to their land at Moreton Daily Stadium during a moving cultural exchange on November 29.

chael Connolly, an Aboriginal artist and proud descendant of the Kullilla Tribe from the Thargomindah and Eulo region and the Muruwari People from Goodooga and Brewarrina region of north-west New South Wales.

Mr Warner told the story of a young man’s initiation and spoke about the journey we all take in life.

“We all have a journey, we all have that journey in life just like the New Zealand Warriors – they have a path, they have a journey.

Hopefully, they win the NRL one day … this year, hopefully,” he said.

“They’re going to go across many of our countries, many of our states and I feel it’s my (role) on behalf of my people to bless the New Zealand Warriors on that journey.”

The AUAHA – Maori Cultural Performing Troupe delivered a

Pohiri – a Maori welcome in response, and both groups performed ceremonial dances and songs during the cultural exchange.

Mayor Peter Flannery spoke about the strong link between Australia and New Zealand.

“Council has entered into a partnership with the Warriors which will see our destination and investments brands beamed to a New Zealand audience.

While the Warriors are based in Moreton Bay, we consider them part of our community and would like to take this opportunity to warmly welcome you,” Mayor Flannery said.

“Council is incredibly excited to have the Warriors based here in Moreton Bay in 2022. To the players, Moreton Bay Region welcomes you with open arms and warm hearts.”

CEO Cameron George thanked Council and the Dolphins for their support.

“We’ll make this a hell of a year and hopefully we can score plenty of tries on your land as plenty of your ancestors have shown us how to do this in the past,” Mr George said.

Carving out a slice of the action STORY JODIE POWELL LANDSCAPING and pizza might seem like strange companions but Chris Gill’s career creating backyard havens was the inspiration for his venture as a pizza aficionado running The Woodfired Pizza Oven.

The Ferny Hills resident was searching for a new direction and, having installed a pizza oven in his backyard after envying those he built for clients, he decided to take the concept on the road.

“Our first pizza truck was converted from one of my landscaping trucks,” Mr Gill recalled.

“For the first year and a half we were running the landscaping business and the food truck, mainly on Friday and Saturday nights.”

Mr Gill took a leap of faith and committed to the pizza business, but disaster struck when the door of his truck popped open and took out a power pole.

“All of a sudden we had no income.”

The onset of COVID-19 forced a rethink, with only family members allowed to work in the business, and Mr Gill had the heartbreaking job of letting other staff go for a period of time.

But once things improved, the popularity of take-away food surged.

“During the height of Covid, our business grew 225 percent, we added another vehicle, and employed many local school and university students,” Mr Gill said.

While producing popular pizzas is gratifying, Mr Gill is more passionate about the community connections his business has created.

“People would come and sit in the park and have their pizzas and their sanity moment.

“One of the benefits of

The popularity of The Woodfired Oven has led to catering for birthdays,

weddings, engagement parties and more.

“One of our pizzas is even named after one of our first customers, (local author and filmmaker) Josie (Montano),” Mr Gill said.

“The first week, she ordered a Pizza Supreme

with pepperoni, and then she ordered it every week.

“We tried it and loved it and put it on the menu.”

The pizza’s known as the Nonna Pina Supreme in honour of a character in Ms Montano’s short film, The Great Salami Breakout.

Hooked On Fishing and Boating Fishing

WITH the coming summer looking damp, I thought I'd address fishing in conditions that may not be optimum for humans but can be beneficial to the fish.

Heavy rainfall flushes bait from the safety of rivers and creeks, pushing it out into open water where it becomes easy prey for predators seeking a meal.

This can occur via large volumes of rainwater making its way into the system and causing heavier outgoing tidal current or it can be due to the volume of freshwater in the system causing a dilution of the salt content in the water, causing marine life to head downstream chasing the salinity levels they need to survive.

While the water may look dirty, this quite often stimulates fish to feed more enthusiastically than in clear conditions. With their ability to sense vibration and detect scent, fish don't need clear water and calm conditions to find a feed. In addition to baitfish, heavy current flow from rains can also drag large amounts of dead food which adds to the feeding potential outside the river and creek mouths.

During and just after periods of heavy rainfall, sharks are one species known to congregate in river and creek mouths and the bays that these waterways empty into because they know that these areas will bring an abundance of food straight to them.

When waters are murky, fish may feed for longer and in much shallower water than we

think. They know that the lack of clarity of the water gives them fantastic cover and gives them the confidence to feed for extended periods in waters that they may not venture into in clear conditions. If rain is accompanied by rough seas this agitates the seabed, particularly in shallow water, uncovering food which may not be usually exposed.

Unless you're made of sugar, you won't melt if you get wet.

So, don't let average weather stop you from getting out there.

You might be missing a shot at your fish of a lifetime.

FISHING REPORT • Not a lot of feedback this issue as the weather hasn't been as co-operative as it could be.

• Summer whiting are still patchy but again, a few nice fish for those willing to put in the time and cover the ground.

• A few flathead in the Pine River, Hays Inlet and the smaller creeks, with one very nice 79cm fish that I was shown a brag mat photo of.

• Squire, snapper and some grassy sweetlip on the inshore reefs and off the rocky points around the peninsula with two nice land-based snapper in the 50s and 60s plus a few legal squire off Woody Point Jetty.

• A few schools of mackerel spotted harassing bait in Bramble Bay on the couple of clear days we've managed to have so far.

• Mangrove Jack are starting to fire up as the weather warms with several respectable fish caught around the Peninsula.

• Mud crabs on the move with a couple of regulars getting a good result from their pots.

AS WE lead up to Christmas, a lot of our culinary focus turns to prawns and Moreton Bay produces some wonderfully tasty product.

Wild-caught tiger prawns are always popular at Christmas time and Moreton Bay is a significant area of production for the trawlers that catch them.

There are a couple of different species of tiger prawns, with the brown tiger prawn the most commonly caught species in Moreton Bay. The brown tiger prawn is endemic to Australia and Moreton Bay is the southernmost location on the Australian east coast where they are highly abundant, although their range does extend to mid‑NSW. Seagrass is critical for the lifecycle of tiger prawns. No seagrass = no tiger prawns.

Juvenile tiger prawns are most abundant in sparse seagrass habitat. The striped colouration of the tiger prawns provides camouflage for them as juveniles. While their diet is broad, plants including algae, seagrass and seagrass seeds are essential in the diet for the health of juvenile brown tiger prawns. They do become more carnivorous as they grow, eating larger relative volumes of animals such as small crustaceans and molluscs.

Brown tiger prawns are nocturnal foragers. They spend the day hiding in seagrass or buried in the seabed.

which are highly migratory and leave Moreton Bay as adults, most tiger prawns spend their entire lifecycle within the bay.

In Moreton Bay, the spawning period of brown tiger prawns peaks between October and November. Peaks of juvenile brown tiger prawns appearing in their seagrass nursery habitat occur between September and November and late January to April. The lifespan of a brown tiger prawn is between approximately 18 months and two years. As tiger prawns mature, they move progressively into deeper waters.

The size of the brown tiger prawn population each year varies. Temperature is the most significant explanatory factor for annual variation in brown tiger prawn recruitment and increased temperatures have increased recruitment of brown tiger prawns.

If you are tucking into wildcaught tiger prawns this Christmas, think about the important role seagrass habitat in maintaining catches of this tasty critter. Remember, no seagrass = no tiger prawns.

They will face players from as far north as Atherton, Yeppoon, Gladstone and Dalby, as well as many from the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast.

“This tournament is so important to me,” the 28-year-old said. “It’s a great day and something I am passionate about.

The CSJC, which began in 2017, is first qualifying event for the 2022 Greg Norman Junior Masters, and will be over 18 holes of stroke play with a single tee start at 7.30am.

Special Olympians finally back on court MORE than 100 athletes from across the state converged on the South Pine Sports Complex at Brendale for an interclub basketball competition.

Special Olympics Queensland Community Development Officer Kim Lawley said basketballers from 10 clubs including Moreton North, Gympie, Mackay, Bundaberg and the Sunshine and Gold Coasts took part.

“We hadn’t had a competition like this since March – the one in August was cancelled because of COVID on the Saturday before the competition on Sunday,” Ms Lawley said.

The event, across four divisions and 26 teams, gave players the chance to put into practice the skills they had been building on in training all year.

ISAAC Hardman is a rising star of Australian middleweight boxing, but it was not always his first sporting love. Nor his second.

The 25-year-old, who now lives in Bald Hills, was a “footy head” in Morayfield State High’s rugby league excellence program, at a Gold Coast academy and playing “rep” with Sunshine Coast Falcons.

“The NRL was my goal …. and then UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship),” he said.

Hardman was born in Redcliffe and lived at Deception Bay, but it was in Caboolture where his

sporting career took a decisive turn.

In 2014, while playing rugby league with Burpengary and Caboolture, he told team-mates: “Sorry, I’m going to be a fighter”.

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) was first, then boxing, following his father’s footsteps and winning his first 11 fights before last Saturday’s bout against Adam Stowe in Brisbane.

Hardman was putting up his Australian Middleweight, IBF Oriental Title and WBO Oceania titles as well as his world rankings – 11 by the WBO (World Boxing Organisation) and 14 by the IBF (International Boxing Federation).

“I can appreciate who my dad was now. I’ve felt that’s why I found fighting, to

have a connection with my dad and what he did.”

Hardman’s career has not been hindered by COVID and travel restrictions. He had three fights in 50 days earlier this year and Saturday was his fourth in seven months.

In fact, during the pandemic his stock has risen to the point where he is now in conversations about world title fights.

“COVID didn’t put a halt to my career. I was able to fight at a domestic level, didn’t have to travel," Hardman said.

“Five fights in the midst of the pandemic … some people haven’t had any. I have been very lucky.”

Corey Lovewell will coach Pine Rivers Athletic in the new FQPL6 next season. Trials for 2022 start on December 14 at 6.30pm at United’s Samsonvale Rd ground.

Bears take Premier title – again

The Polo Bears, which are based at Albany Creek Leisure Centre, have won a second successive Delphina Premier League women’s title.
