Upgrade for NBN

Calling time after 36 years

CABOOLTURE and Narangba are among the suburbs which be eligible to upgrade to NBN’s Fibre to the Premises (FTTP).

Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher, said it would bring the total to 1.6 million premises of the two million target.

“This next stage will see another 200,000 premises eligible, many of which are in the Longman electorate, which will drive significant benefits to the community,” Minister Fletcher said.

“NBN Co will work with its construction and delivery partners to get premises in Longman ready.”

QUEENSLAND'S Health & Environment Committee will be on Bribie tomorrow (Thursday) to speak to residents about key issues.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD AFTER 36 years’ service to the Caboolture community, Dr Bernard Gerber will see his last patients on Christmas Eve before retiring.

It will be the end of an era in Caboolture South with the Morayfield Rd premises to be sold.

“I still enjoy the job and I think I’m pretty good at it,” Dr Gerber said, “but I always said I’d retire at 65 and I’m very comfortable with the decision.

“There will be no party on December 24. The final afternoon will be doing payslips and long-service leave payments to staff.”

Dr Gerber will, however, continue working for 70 nursing home patients and surgical assisting, but his plan in retirement is to travel. “Maybe in Australia

to start with,” he said.

Retirement will end four decades of long working days, weeks and years, which started in 1981 when Dr Gerber became an intern at Redcliffe Hospital.

When his practice partner left in 2002, Dr Gerber had “two doctors’ worth of patients and only one doctor”.

He went 10 years without a holiday and worked weekdays and Saturday mornings for nine years.

Saturdays stopped in 2011, but Dr Gerber still does 6570 hours a week with appointments 8am-6pm and no built-in breaks.

He also works at Bolton Clarke aged care home and is Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at Caboolture Private Hospital.

It is a far cry from his first day as a Caboolture GP. On June 11, 1985, Dr Gerber

At that time The Milky Way Café was a big attraction on Morayfield Rd close to the surgery. A car wash is now there and much has changed at the practice.

“We don’t do anything like the trauma we used to,” Dr Gerber said, “the fractures and lacerations, go to Caboolture Hospital or the (Health) Hub (Morayfield).

“But we deal with a lot more diabetes. When first came maybe there were two

or three diabetes patients.

Now I have hundreds. A lot of diet Type 2 diabetes … being overweight. You just have to move with all the changes. There are new tests and new diseases.”

The biggest change has been from paper to digital records. Dr Gerber’s surgery still has racks of empty manila folders behind reception in a nod to the past.

Born in Ipswich, he went to school at Injune, Maryborough and Emerald.

A career in teaching was Dr Gerber’s original plan, until a vocational guidance officer in Emerald looked at his school results.

“He said ‘you haven’t really thought about this, have you? You could do medicine,” recalled Dr Gerber, “I thought okay. My mother was devastated, she wanted me to be a science teacher.”

Construction to start soon TWO new satellite hospitals in the Caboolture and Bribie Island region have taken sizeable step forward.

The State Government has appointed Hutchinson Builders as the managing contractor for the project for a total of seven satellite hospitals across the state’s south-east.

Construction is expected to start in 2022 and the satellite hospitals to open in 2023.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD KOAH O’Neill and Emma Jackson have lit up their neighbourhood − again.

Every year, they festoon the front of their home at 6 Riverparks Way, Upper Caboolture, with Christmas lights and displays.

This year is their best yet and one of the entries in the first Moreton Daily Christmas Lights competition, which has a prize pool of $24,000.

Mr O’Neill said they have around 3000 lights and five blow-up features as well

as a snow machine, Santa letterbox and colouring for youngsters.

“Emma is really into Christmas and she’s got me into the spirit of this,” he said, “we mainly do it for the kids to see their faces light up.

“We’ve been doing it for three years and it has helped us meet and speak to people in the neighbourhood we haven’t met before.”

This year’s display, which takes a day-and-a-half to build − includes a 4.5-metre dinosaur, Santa in a forklift

delivering presents and a koala.

All are inflated around 6pm each night and deflected around 9.30pm, weather permitting. Mr O’Neill said they planned to keep the display up until new year.

Discussions have also been held about their 2022 display.

“We’re running out of lawn, so we might look at doing a display in the garage,” Mr O’Neill said, “perhaps with a train theme.”

Winners will be announced at the Pine Rivers Christmas Carols, Pine Rivers Park, December 19.

Markets back in new year STORY NICK CROCKFORD CABOOLTURE Town Square Markets look set to return next year.

Organisers believe the three-month trial, which finishes with an extended Christmas market day on December 15, has been a success.

Goodwill Projects Managing Director Mark Power said the markets had been “really well received” by vendors and local workers.

“We are very keen to resume in the New Year (February/March) once the rain and heat settles down a bit,” Mr Power said.

“That decision will be guided by the vendors and level of support from locals post-summer.

“I think it just needed a bit of live music to bring it to life. The revolving food offering each fortnight also

mean there’s something new every time.”

Mr Power was supported

by Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery: “I absolutely hope to see this fantastic initiative continue," he said.

“This has helped local micro and small businesses to access new and additional customers.

“My message to Caboolture locals is – if you love it, get around it!”

The town square markets have been held fortnightly since October 6.

A special Christmas edition of the markets will be on December 15 from noon to 6pm to showcase local goods, handmade gifts and plenty of food options.

“It’s our biggest markets to date,” Mr Power said, “a great way to end the year.”

How fishing helps social isolation

WITH the help of Fishability Queensland, keen anglers experiencing social isolation and other challenges have the chance to wet a line and relax by the water.

The organisation is the result of partnerships with Bribie Island Boat Charters and community groups and gives socially inclusive fishing opportunities for those experiencing disadvantage, isolation and marginalisation.

son said qualified staff and volunteers, headed out into Bribie Island’s Pumicestone Passage on 8-12-seater barbecue boats (offered in kind by Bribie Island Boat Charters) for a friendly year-long fishing competition called “The Bribie Island Boat Charters Challenge”.

“We also offer health and wellbeing programs at Runaway Bay and Bribie Island.

Community onshore fishing and other fishing events,

in varying accessible locations, are also offered to participants, free of charge.”

The organisation holds regular fishing events and barbecues, in collaboration with Margate-based Holistic Horizons at Bongaree Jetty at Bribie Island.

THE ingenuity, resilience and tenacity of businesses across the Moreton Bay Region was celebrated at the gala 2021 Moreton Bay Region Business Excellence and Innovation Awards on November 19.

About 480 people from the business and broader community came together at Eatons Hill Hotel.

There were 58 finalists in 12 categories, after a record number of businesses entered.

The fourth annual awards program was refreshed to reflect Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Re2. gional Economic Development Strategy, with three new categories – Businesswoman of the Year, Food and Agribusiness Excellence, and Advanced Manufacturing Excellence.

The Moreton Bay Region Business Excellence and Innovation Awards were delivered by Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism with sponsorship from Moreton Bay Regional Council.

“We’ve worked very hard in the Moreton Bay Region for environmentally positive outcomes. It has been a very, very hard and long process – but something we are very proud

The business, in its 50th year, employs 28 people.

“We have worked hard in our machines, applications, inks, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, all our paper stocks are FSC certified," Ms Eckersley said.

MANAGING Director Gavin Scurr said it was an “absolute honour” for Wamuran-based family business Piñata Farms to win the region's first Food and Agribusiness Excellence Award.

“It’s a real honour, particularly when you look at the calibre of business in this region. The other finalists tonight are all worthy winners,” Mr Scurr said.

by Mr Scurr’s grandfather, a builder at the time, growing pineapples on 26ha.

Today it is Australia’s largest pineapple grower, a leading multi-fruit producer and grows four fresh lines over more than 1000ha across Australia with 70 employees.

“We put a caravan park in a place they said wouldn’t work,” Mr Comiskey said.

He said a pump track was planned, so too a pool with a bar, an 18-hole putt putt and a “massive arcade” has been put in.

“It’s one of my favourite businesses we own. To see the enjoyment people get out of it. There’s nothing better," Mr Comiskey said.

THE figures tell a sad story – 55 koalas have been killed by cars, disease or dogs in this region since August 1.

Those are just the ones known to Moreton Bay Koala Rescue and Pine Rivers Koala Care. The real toll may be higher in our fast-growing region.

Anzac Avenue continues to be a hot spot at Kippa-Ring, Rothwell and through Kallangur.

So too the Bruce Highway off-ramp at Burpengary, Kurwongbah, Whiteside, the Hills District, Petrie, Narangba, North Lakes … the list goes on.

Koalas have also been rescued from street signs, a coffee drive through at North Lakes, pergolas and every species of tree (native and non-native) in backyards.

Others have been found in the middle of roads, on backdoor steps of houses, stressed and injured in gardens. And it will get worse from now to the end of Jan-

you are going to see a koala in the wild at some stage,” Moreton Bay Koala Rescue Vice-president Mike Fowler said. “If you see a koala in distress, have our number in your phone and call a rescuer.

“Often we get people who ring saying they saw a koala sitting in the road a few hours ago. Three hours ago is useless.”

Koalas have good hearing and sense of smell, but poor

eyesight and with development shrinking habitat, education is essential.

“I want to put together a film of what to do if people see a koala in trouble and what we can do to rescue it,” Mr Fowler said.

“Never, ever, ever, ever try to grab and hold a koala. What you see at a sanctuary and the reality of an angry koala are worlds apart. I’ve had a finger broken by a koala biting through welding gloves. All koalas act differently.”

MBKR has 14 trained volunteer rescuers and 20-25 ambulance drivers to ferry a koala to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital at Beerwah or the RSPCA Animal Care Campus at Wacol.

Rescuers can be at any location in the Moreton Bay Region within 20 minutes.

“We are self-funded and use what we have got. It’s just, just enough,” said Mr Fowler, who is a trained wildlife carer. “We’d love a wildlife hospital (in this region).”

Moreton Bay Regional Council is to put a fauna rope bridge across O’Brien Rd in Burpengary. The $362,000 project will include 275m of wildlife fencing and the 28m bridge. Work should start in January and take 10 weeks.

Foreshore upgrade

The foreshore at Bellara is to be upgraded with $1.5m under the State Government’s SEQ Community Stimulus Program (SEQCSP). Work will include new park facilities along Sylvan Beach Esp.

Hotel opens after $2.2m renovations BRIBIE Island Hotel will fully re-open today (December 8) after a $2.2 million dollar renovation.

The pub opened last week, the beer garden opens today and a Grand Opening Weekend (December 17-19).

The hotel’s new-look includes a refreshed bistro, family-friendly beer garden with large lawn games and renovated gaming room, creating a family friendly hub.

There will also be a new food menu by executive chef Dylan Kemp at the Sylvan Beach Esplanade venue.

Chief Operating Officer Craig Ellison, from Australian Venue Co which operates Bribie Island Hotel, said the renovations aimed to showcase Bribie’s “island charm”.

Ms Sublette’s love of greyhounds started when her cat of 16 years died.

“The vet nurse rang to ask if I had another pet … and asked if I had thought about a greyhound?” she said.

Since that call Ms Sublette has had seven greyhounds in 11 years and says they are “super sensitive and affectionate”.

Walks are on one of three

routes posted by Ms Sublette on Facebook the week before the fortnightly walk.

Routes are from Bongaree to Bribie Bridge and back, from Sylvan Beach by the VMR to Sunset Park and back and a loop at Bibiyula wetlands.

All are dependent on the weather. Start times 4pm in winter, 4.30pm summer.

TIME is running out for residents to have their say on a proposed road corridor between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, with Stage 1 of the community consultation process closing this week.

Residents have until December 10 to voice their opinions regarding an 8.3km corridor being constructed between Moodlu and Moorina, which is part of the Bruce Highway Western Alternative Planning scheme.

Transport and Mains Road Minister Mark Bailey visited Narangba last month to make the announcement of the preferred corridor, which will run through the new Caboolture West development area.

Caboolture West is expected to see a population boom of up to 30,000 homes and 70,000 residents.

A spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) said they were talking directly to impacted landowners due to this corridor being labelled a “priority” for the fast-growing region.

How Kaylee became face of festive appeal A THREE-year-old from Narangba is the face of Epilepsy Queensland’s Christmas Appeal which will help families whose lives have been affected by the condition.

Just weeks after her third birthday, Kaylee Cuthbert was diagnosed with epilepsy and her parents were worried their daughter’s childhood would never be the same.

They noticed Kaylee falling over and suspected she may have vertigo, until one morning she crawled into their bed and the entire left side of her body went stiff.

The youngster was quickly referred to the Children’s Hospital and later diagnosed with epilepsy.

“We were so lost. We were in a daze of disbelief,” Kaylee’s mum Aleisha said.

Epilepsy can suddenly interrupt a family’s life.

“We withdrew from leaving the house and it was months before we had the strength and confidence to go out again,” Mrs Cuthbert said.

Now, with a helping hand from Epilepsy Queensland, Kaylee is looking forward to celebrating Christmas – just like every other threeyear-old girl.

In fact, Epilepsy Queensland has chosen her to be the face of its 2021 Christmas Appeal.

Volunteers needed to Brake Cycle BRAKING the Cycle Caboolture has issued and appeal for more volunteer driver mentors.

The program helps young people ‘facing barriers’ to complete the mandatory 100 hours of supervised driving in a safe, suitable vehicle.

Cars are provided by Braking the Cycle, which is run

by PCYC Queensland, as well as driver mentors – but more are needed in this region.

It is open to anyone with an open licence, who can spare one hour a week and wishing to help young people learn to drive.

Training is provided by Braking the Cycle and volunteers must have, or be willing to obtain, a Blue Card.

One Braking the Cycle mentor said he was “proud to be a mentor” and “couldn’t recommend this place enough”.

Having a driving licence can give participants better job prospects and housing opportunities.

There are four Braking the Cycle centres in the Moreton Bay Region, at Caboolture, Deception Bay, Pine Rivers and Redcliffe.

Chief Executive Chris Dougherty said: “Kaylee’s smile and cheeky personality won over the whole office, and we are thankful that her family are able to share their story to help raise funds and awareness for other children diagnosed with epilepsy”.

Following her epilepsy diagnosis this year, Kaylee and her family’s summer plans were put on hold and activities many children take for granted were suddenly off limits.

Kaylee had to take a break from kindergarten and swimming lessons and her parents were on duty 24-hours a day to watch for seizures.

When navigating Kaylee’s diagnosis, her family found hope by reaching out to Epilepsy Queensland for support.

“Epilepsy Queensland has helped us to understand that we are not alone,” Mrs Cuthbert said.

“They provided resources to help Kaylee and we found

people we can talk to, to help us cope.”

Each year the Epilepsy Queensland Helpline answers more than 3500 calls for help from families just like Kaylee’s.

The 2021 Christmas Appeal hopes to raise $30,000 to ensure more children like Kaylee can be supported to live their life well.

Getting a diagnosis is not the end of a child’s epilepsy journey – it is just the beginning. Learning to live with epilepsy can be over-

whelming.

“We are heartbroken that our little girl has to go through this, knowing it is lifelong,” Mrs Cuthbert said.

Trailer raffle to help fresh food project THE ROTARY Club of Caboolture has its annual Trailer Raffle up and running in Morayfield Shopping Centre, just outside the Suncorp bank branch.

Proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the Caboolture Mini Farm project which is producing fresh food for those in need, employment,

training and hands-on education to local youth.

Bribie wins national awards Skateboard scheme to save trees

Minecraft helps heal Country

BRIBIE Island State High School has beaten tough competition from across Australia to win the Future Anything Team of the Year.

There were also tributes at the national grand final in Brisbane last month for the Bribie teachers who led the program and won the first Educator Awards.

Bribie Island SHS’s Eco Boards team reached the grand final while the Ream Cycle and Natural Technologies presented to experts and semi-final runners-up.

“There have been so many remarkable young people to have emerged from Activate at Bribie and this is a testament to the teaching team which has worked over the last two years to build a truly entrepreneurial culture in the school," Future Anything Founder and Director Nicole Dyson said.

Eco-Boards’ Braith, Toby and Isaac created a skateboarding company looking to reduce the rising number of trees being cut down to produce skateboard decks.

Ream Cycle identified the massive paper waste in schools and Melody created a company to combat this with handmade books, bookmarks, cards and seed-paper from school waste.

Natural Technologies was started by Fergus to replace modern technologies such as hand sanitisers and soaps with natural, sustainable options and reduce pollution.

More than 45 schools across Australia entered.­ Future Anything finalists: Fergus Donohue (Natural Technologies), Melody Cherrie (Ream Cycle), Braith, Toby Jenkins and Isaac Owen (Eco Boards).

BRIBIE Island State School students have won a national award after creating a Minecraft world showcasing the island’s cultural heritage.

The group of nine from Years 4-5 won the Best Minecraft World (Foundation to Year 6) in the Indigital Minecraft Education Challenge.

It asked them to create a world under the NAIDOC theme “How can we ‘Heal Country: Side by Side,’ and build more sustainable communities by embracing First Nations’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country?”.

Students built a present-day representation of local Country and a second of the area in the future, sharing ideas while learning about local Indigenous history and culture.

Teacher Lisa Anici said the school entered the challenge by chance.

“I mentioned the Indigital competition to the students in passing and they were so excited – but I had never played Minecraft.”

Bribie Island was one of 160 schools registered for the national challenge.

New-look at Mazda showroom A NEW era will dawn at Grand Prix Mazda Caboolture this month when major upgrades are unveiled.

The dealership’s showroom at Spitfire Ct, Caboolture has been extended for more eye-catching displays of the latest car models.

A car delivery bay has been built to help make a show of presenting vehicles to new owners.

Grand Prix Mazda Caboolture has also extended the service workshop and a new coffee shop will open as part of the upgrades.

“We can’t wait to show everyone,” Dealer Principal Jake Camilleri said, “we’ll get everything bedded down this month and have an official opening in January.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD TWO Caboolture students have been recognised for their compassion, integrity and kindness at a virtual ceremony for the Fred Hollows Humanity Award.

Cooper Byers and Kenzie Perisch were nominated by their teacher at St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School, Acting Deputy Principal Matt Nicholls.

Cooper was nominated

for embodying honesty, humility, respect, faith and compassion.

Kenzie for choosing to follow values such as decency without seeking reward.

“Cooper is a school captain with a big heart,” Mr Nicholls said.

“He leads by example, always volunteering to help any situation.

"He takes initiative to help younger students and recognises those who might

need help.

“Kenzie is a very respectful and dedicated person with a huge heart.

“Her compassion and kindness to every person she encounters is a wonderful example to all. She is very accepting, accommodating, understanding and supporting of those who need it.”

Fred Hollows was a New Zealand–Australian eye surgeon who restored eye-

sight in thousands of people here and overseas.

At the awards ceremony, Founding Director of The Fred Hollows Foundation, Gabi Hollows congratulated more than 200 students.

“The past 18 months have been tough for everyone, but especially for those of you whose schooling was interrupted by the pandemic,” she said.

Why bin chickens recycle for Rosies

STUDENTS at St Eugene College, Burpengary have developed a new beach essential which can help save lives.

BeachMate is a waterproof wristband which tracks a swimmer’s heart rate, location and oxygen levels.

The prototype was devised by the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students Gianna, Isabelle, Jade and Gabrielle for Brisbane Catholic Education’s first STEM MAD (Making a Difference) competition.

It won both the Future STEM Award and the Executive Director Award.

“The dangers of the beach, possibility of drowning and stress on lifesavers drew this team to create a device to assist swimmers and address the large numbers of drownings every year,” St Eugene’s Digital Learning and Resourcing teacher Scott Letts, said.

Gabrielle said BeachMate would provide real-time location data of all beachgoers as well as oxygen saturation and heart rate monitoring to alert lifeguards.

“To test our product, we created a breadboard fea-

The students have been diligently sifting through campus bins in their breaks, collecting poppers, cans and bottles to raise money for charity Rosies – Friends on the Street.

Rosies provides community and connection through street outreach to those who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or socially isolated.

The idea was sparked when school staff and students ran an awareness activity about Rosies as part of the St Eugene Feast Day, which inspired the Year 3 pupils to practice Service in Action – one of the college’s values.

Teacher Rod Alizzi said the students in the lunchtime club were affectionately known as the “Bin Chickens” and were on a mission to make a difference.

The Bin Chickens began with a target of raising $100 for Rosies but have already raised $750 – collecting more than 7500 cans, bottles and poppers - and are well on their way to their revised goal of $1000.

Chaplain back on song STORY NICK CROCKFORD YOU’VE heard of the singing nun – now meet the singing prison chaplain!

Beachmere’s Sue Collier has been a volunteer prison chaplain with Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy for four years, but decades earlier was a popular singer in Australia and abroad.

She started singing professionally at the age of 15, the start of an entertainment career spanning 35 years.

Under the name Toni McCann she released garage pop-rock singles such as ‘My Baby’ and the theme tune

for Australian music show Saturday Date.

Changing her name to Toni McRae, she recorded her first album Banjo Flat and married musician Royce Nicholas.

Performing together as Toni & Royce, the duo released three albums and several singles, performed for troops at military bases in Far East Asia and Europe, played in UK clubs, appeared at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and toured Queensland Arts Council children’s programs around Australian schools for nine years.

Now Sue has released her first original music since the 1980s, a new EP of original Christian songs entitled You Might Be the One. “During the last two years I felt a need to put some of these songs on disc so that I

had something that I could share," she said. “I hope this will encourage my family, my friends, and the people that I meet.”

For Sue, it has been an interesting experience – and a learning curve – return-

Opera Queensland helping markets get festive

THERE’S two more signature Christmas in the Moreton Bay Region carols events between now and Christmas, bringing some festive fun to venues at Redcliffe and Strathpine.

Rain washed out the first two – Caboolture and North Lakes – but Redcliffe Christmas Carols is at Moreton Daily Stadium on December 12 and Pine Rivers Christmas Carols is at Pine Rivers Park on December 19.

Each event is from 4-8pm.

Entry is free, tickets are not required.

Santa’s Village is returning in 2021, giving children the chance to meet the man in red (socially distanced) and take a photo. It will also feature roving entertainment, craft workshops, face-painting and children can write a letter to Santa.

The carols events’ signature giant snow globes are also back. Cost $10 a group.

Making their debut are Christmas llamas. Bookings are not required, but photos and meet-and-greet opportunities will be on a first-in, first-served queuing basis.

Fireworks at 8pm.

Everyone attending will have the opportunity to donate a gift or hamper to a person or family in need via the Charity Donation Tree.

Moreton Daily has partnered with Caboolture Community Action, North Lakes Uniting Church, Redcliffe Care Network and Pine Rivers Uniting Church.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE idea for a bridge was first hatched in 1937 after the completion of the Hornibrook Highway from Brighton to Clontarf, on the Redcliffe peninsula.

The SS Koopa had provided transport to Bribie Island from the mainland for many years before being discontinued and replaced by a vehicle ferry. It relied on good weather.

The ferry spurred road and home construction on the island but it became evident that development could not reach its potential without a bridge.

A committee was formed and the franchise for a toll bridge was negotiated with the government.

The company was however unable to come up with the

finance and the proposal did not come to fruition.

After World War II, the man who built the Hornibrook Highway, Manuel Hornibrook, sent a drilling barge to Bribie and researched what was possible.

His and others’ approaches to government were unsuccessful.

In 1955, the government considered a proposal to build a bridge but did not pursue it because of local opposition.

Member for Bribie and then Leader of the Opposition Frank Nicklin promised to build a bridge, if he was returned to office in the 1950s and the idea gained increased publicity from 1957 to 1959.

When he became Premier, many believed he abandoned the Bribie Bridge idea

in favour of a harbour and facilities at Mooloolaba.

With pressure from community groups and local council, the government was forced to act.

At that time, it was estimated that about 500 people lived on the island.

Discussions were had with residents about the need for a toll and it was later decided the toll would be removed as soon as the sales of crown land and toll collections had paid for the bridge.

On November 17, 1959, it was announced that a bridge would be built.

The Co-ordinator-General’s Department came up with the design – 38 spans (each 72 feet and two inches) – a total

The girders of prestressed concrete were to be 72 feet long and 4 feet six inches deep. The roadway was to measure 24 feet with a footpath on one side.

The structure formed an even curve in elevation with the centre 24 feet at low tide.

Construction began in October 1961, beginning at the mainland end. The 206 piles were driven 30 feet into the

seabed by a 10 tonne pile hammer.

About 40 men were employed during construction, with no fatalities and only minor accidents reported.

The bridge cost 350,000 (pounds), with the total cost including land resumptions, associated roadworks, construction of toll facilities and other expenses at 520,000 (pounds).

The bridge was officially

opened on October 19, 1963 and became the longest complete pre-stressed concrete bridge in Australia.

The toll was five shillings each way and it took 12 years to pay for the bridge at which point the toll was removed.

The bridge led to increased numbers of visitors to the island and helped grow its reputation as a holiday destination.

Club's new year relaunch

BRIBIE Island Country Music Club is being revived and will return next month.

A new committee has been formed and positions will be filled at an AGM on December 14 at Cooinda House, cnr Foster and Banya Sts, Bongaree at 2pm.

Lindsay (Scottie) Scott is the club’s acting president, Shirley Austin acting treasurer, Janice Brown acting secretary and Justin McCarthy acting vice-president.

The club will then relaunch on January 23 with live music at Bribie Island Recreation Hall, First Ave, Bongaree, 11am-4pm. Members $6, non-members $8.

There will be a “new hot band”, club artists, visiting and walk-up performers are welcome, so too visiting clubs. New members are welcome.

Regular meetings will return, on the fourth Sunday each month, starting in February.

The relaunch comes after recent moves to relocate the club to Caboolture.

“My husband and I are foundation members,” said Acting Secretary Janice Brown, “a lot of people worked hard to get the club

CABOOLTURE’S biggest annual celebration, Caboolture Festival, is calling on businesses to get involved and help showcase the area and increase visitation.

The festival will run in June 2022, and feature a wide range of events including an open air comedy night, gourmet food experiences and much more.

Event organisers, Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT), is calling on local businesses to start planning how they can be part of the 2022 festival.

“This year we had 28 events planned as part of the festival with many of these hosted by local businesses and organisations,” said the MBRIT CEO, Shane Newcombe.

Although the festival was impacted by COVID lockdowns, organisers are working to put together an strong program of events that appeal to a wide audience.

WITH the coming summer looking damp, I thought I'd address fishing in conditions that may not be optimum for humans but can be beneficial to the fish.

Heavy rainfall flushes bait from the safety of rivers and creeks, pushing it out into open water where it becomes easy prey for predators seeking a meal.

This can occur via large volumes of rainwater making its way into the system and causing heavier outgoing tidal current or it can be due to the volume of freshwater in the system causing a dilution of the salt content in the water, causing marine life to head downstream chasing the salinity levels they need to survive.

While the water may look dirty, this quite often stimulates fish to feed more enthusiastically than in clear conditions. With their ability to sense vibration and detect scent, fish don't need clear water and calm conditions to find a feed. In addition to baitfish, heavy current flow from rains can also drag large amounts of dead food which adds to the feeding potential outside the river and creek mouths.

During and just after periods of heavy rainfall, sharks are one species known to congregate in river and creek mouths and the bays that these waterways empty into because they know that these areas will bring an abundance of food straight to them.

When waters are murky, fish may feed for longer and in much shallower water than we

think. They know that the lack of clarity of the water gives them fantastic cover and gives them the confidence to feed for extended periods in waters that they may not venture into in clear conditions. If rain is accompanied by rough seas this agitates the seabed, particularly in shallow water, uncovering food which may not be usually exposed.

Unless you're made of sugar, you won't melt if you get wet.

So, don't let average weather stop you from getting out there.

You might be missing a shot at your fish of a lifetime.

FISHING REPORT • Not a lot of feedback this issue as the weather hasn't been as co-operative as it could be.

• Summer whiting are still patchy but again, a few nice fish for those willing to put in the time and cover the ground.

• A few flathead in the Pine River, Hays Inlet and the smaller creeks, with one very nice 79cm fish that I was shown a brag mat photo of.

• Squire, snapper and some grassy sweetlip on the inshore reefs and off the rocky points around the peninsula with two nice land-based snapper in the 50s and 60s plus a few legal squire off Woody Point Jetty.

• A few schools of mackerel spotted harassing bait in Bramble Bay on the couple of clear days we've managed to have so far.

• Mangrove Jack are starting to fire up as the weather warms with several respectable fish caught around the Peninsula.

• Mud crabs on the move with a couple of regulars getting a good result from their pots.

AS WE lead up to Christmas, a lot of our culinary focus turns to prawns and Moreton Bay produces some wonderfully tasty product.

Wild-caught tiger prawns are always popular at Christmas time and Moreton Bay is a significant area of production for the trawlers that catch them.

There are a couple of different species of tiger prawns, with the brown tiger prawn the most commonly caught species in Moreton Bay. The brown tiger prawn is endemic to Australia and Moreton Bay is the southernmost location on the Australian east coast where they are highly abundant, although their range does extend to mid‑NSW. Seagrass is critical for the lifecycle of tiger prawns. No seagrass = no tiger prawns.

Juvenile tiger prawns are most abundant in sparse seagrass habitat. The striped colouration of the tiger prawns provides camouflage for them as juveniles. While their diet is broad, plants including algae, seagrass and seagrass seeds are essential in the diet for the health of juvenile brown tiger prawns. They do become more carnivorous as they grow, eating larger relative volumes of animals such as small crustaceans and molluscs.

Brown tiger prawns are nocturnal foragers. They spend the day hiding in seagrass or buried in the seabed.

which are highly migratory and leave Moreton Bay as adults, most tiger prawns spend their entire lifecycle within the bay.

In Moreton Bay, the spawning period of brown tiger prawns peaks between October and November. Peaks of juvenile brown tiger prawns appearing in their seagrass nursery habitat occur between September and November and late January to April. The lifespan of a brown tiger prawn is between approximately 18 months and two years. As tiger prawns mature, they move progressively into deeper waters.

The size of the brown tiger prawn population each year varies. Temperature is the most significant explanatory factor for annual variation in brown tiger prawn recruitment and increased temperatures have increased recruitment of brown tiger prawns.

If you are tucking into wildcaught tiger prawns this Christmas, think about the important role seagrass habitat in maintaining catches of this tasty critter. Remember, no seagrass = no tiger prawns.

Mitch ‘excited’ by challenge PRE-SEASON training has started for Caboolture Snakes’ Division One rugby league side under new head coach Mitch Buckett.

The former Snakes junior, who went on to play in the NRL, was offered the challenge of Sunshine Coast A Grade by Snakes’ legend Mark Carstens.

“Mark dangled the carrot of men’s coaching last season ... and I took it,” said Buckett,

“I’m excited to see what I can bring to the role.

“Hopefully we’ll have the bulk of the team back from last season. I’ve spoken to 10 or so, but we’re always open for new players.

“A lot of younger players have been coming through in recent years and it will be good to help them transition into the senior team.

“We’ve had a good group of A Grade players for about

The 25-year-old was a “footy head” in Morayfield State High’s rugby league excellence program, at a Gold Coast academy and laying “rep” with Sunshine Coast Falcons. “The NRL was my goal and then UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship),” he said.

Hardman was born in Redcliffe and lived at Deception Bay, but it was in Caboolture where his career took a decisive turn.

In 2014, while playing rugby league with Burpengary and Caboolture, when he recalls: “I just said sorry, I’m going to be a fighter.”

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) was first and then boxing, following in his father’s footsteps. Hardman won his first 11 fights entering last Saturday’s bout against Adam Stowe.

Hardman was putting up his Australian Middleweight, IBF Oriental Title and WBO Oceania titles as

well as his world rankings 11 by the WBO (World Boxing Organisation) and 14 by the IBF (International Boxing Federation).

“My dad was a super middleweight who fought for the Queensland title,” said Hardman, who now lives in Bald Hills, close to training Blair Studley and Nitro Fitness Boxing at Chermside.

“We lost dad in 2009 when I was 14. I’ve fought at super middle and in one of the venues my dad fought, which was cool.

“I can appreciate who my dad was now. I’ve felt that’s why I found fighting, to have a connection with my dad and what he did. I had

The path to a green and gold jersey starts with centres combining for trials to select teams, in all age groups from Under 10 to seniors, for the Australia Nationals.

At the nationals, Tagaroos selectors choose a top 32 and then top 16, with six shadow players, from the Queensland, NSW and Victoria.

“Going from centres such as North Lakes and Caboolture to playing state cup and then national level against teams from Townsville, Weipa and NSW is a big step,” Newald said.

Special Olympians finally back on court FIVE Special Olympics athletes from the Caboolture region were among more than 100 from across the state at South Pine Sports Complex in Brendale for an interclub basketball competition.

Kyle Richardson, Zac Galloway, Trent Porter, Luana Woods and Joshua Cadman were in the Moreton North team.

Special Olympics Queensland Community Development Officer Kim Lawley said basketballers from 10 clubs took part, from Gympie, Mackay, Bundaberg and the Sunshine and Gold Coast.

“We hadn’t had a competition like this since March – the one in August was cancelled because of COVID on the Saturday before the competition on a Sunday,” Ms Lawley said.

The event, across four divisions and 26 teams, gave players the chance to put into practice the skills they had been building on in training all year.

“They were just so excited – the first hour was catching up with friends.

Justice back to defend her Classic crown PLAYERS from across Queensland are heading to Wantima Country Club for the fifth Cameron Smith Junior Classic (CSJC).

Nine from the Moreton Bay Region were, at the time of writing, in a strong field of entries for Friday’s tournament in Brendale.

They include Justice Bosio, from Caboolture, the 2020 Girls’ Champion, who has added a string of regional and state titles to her growing resume.

Ken McKay, the former junior co-ordinator at Wantima who devised the CSJC, said the girls’ competition this year was “looking very, very good”.

The host club will have at least five representatives in the CSJC field while Mattys Visser was an early entry from Redcliffe.

They will face players from as far north as Atherton, Yeppoon, Gladstone and Dalby, as well as many from the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast.

Ryan Harper (Wamuran), Kayne Lockett (Deception Bay) and Ailai Price (Morayfield) will make their Aussie debuts at Under 17 level with North Lakes colleagues Dre Pakeho and Jack Robinson.

Planning for new challenge CABOOLTURE Sports head coach Terry Kirkham is reshaping his senior squads for the challenge of FQPL1 – which is the second tier of Queensland football.

Kirkham has recently brought in several key figures, including strikers Marco Fichtner and Cameron Nairn who have impressed on the Sunshine Coast.

Also, Jace Hudson from SWQ Thunder, Osman Fofanah, a defender who starred for Pine Hills last season and will bolster the rear guard alongside captain Cameron Crestani.

Experienced defender Michael McEvoy has also resigned.

It follows a dominating debut season in FQPL2 which saw Caboolture take the premiership by eight points, with double the goal difference of second-placed Taringa.
