NRL bid process heats up
Moreton Daily Stadium, the home of the Dolphins, and (below) Brisbane Broncos stalwart Alex Glenn.
STORY KYLIE KNIGHT AS the Australian Rugby League prepares to finalise its bidding process for a second Brisbane NRL licence and competition heats up, the Dolphins say they are ready to hit the ground running. Dolphins News spoke with the man driving the Dolphins’ bid for the 17th NRL licence in light of the announcement last week that the Ipswich Jets and Brisbane Bombers bids had merged, and that the ARL might make a decision by June. Terry Reader said while things were changing daily, nothing had changed from the club’s point of view. He said Ipswich already had a bid in motion, and planned to play at Suncorp Stadium, so the merged Brisbane Jets bid would not be significantly different to what was already on the table. It does, however, mean the race is now down to three – Dolphins, Easts Tigers-backed Firehawks and Brisbane Jets. On February 1, ARL Commission Chairman Peter V’landys said there could be a second team in the NRL by 2023 and a decision could be made by June. “There has never been a
Brisbane Roar playing all of its A-League and W-League games at the club’s home, Moreton Daily Stadium, this season. Securing a naming rights sponsor for the stadium was also evidence the club is financially viable and stable – two essential elements for any NRL club. Dolphins CEO Tony Murphy said: “Whatever bid wins the right to join the NRL will be a very good bid and we’re confident it will be us. If anyone beats us, it will be an exceptional bid”.

more direct announcement from the NRL than this week. I think that’s great, everyone’s excited,” Mr Reader said. He hoped there would be clarity on the bid process and timeline soon. “We’ve been building in the background and doing what we can to be in the best position to put forward our bid,” he said.
Club is NRL-ready Mr Reader said Dolphins were in a position to hit the ground running the moment they are given the green light, with all the necessary infrastructure in place, and a from a solid financial position to ensure it will be a stable and viable NRL club.

Veteran SES ’superhero’ retires STORY JODIE POWELL

WHEN Henk Van Den Ende joined the State Emergency Service in 1976, members spent almost as much time raising money to fund fuel and equipment as they did helping in emergencies. The Moreton Bay Region SES local controller retired after a decade in the role last week and said he was heartened by the changes he had seen in more than 40 years of service. “Now, we’re more supported by government and council and there are more opportunities for volunteers,” Mr Van Den Ende explained. “We have closer links with other services through QFES (Queensland Fire and Emergency Services) and the hard work of our volunteers is recognised.” Most gratifying for Mr Van Den Ende has been the opportunity to work alongside the dedicated members of the award-winning Moreton Bay Region SES to oversee its growth. “Seeing the Moreton Bay unit grow from where it was to where it is now – it’s very highly regarded and that’s due to the work of all

I just love helping others Mayor Peter Flannery described Mr Van Ende as a modern-day superhero, providing locals with assistance in some of the darkest and most dangerous moments in their lives. “Henk has answered the distress calls of every flood, storm, drought, search and disaster that’s hit our re-

he was passionate about mentoring and training and was looking forward to continuing to volunteer when disaster strikes. “I won’t be climbing on roofs, but I can be out there chopping down a tree,” he said.
“I also just love educating and helping others, sharing skills and knowledge, and acknowledging the volunteers that do a hell of a lot more than what’s expected of them.”

Apply for funding MORETON Bay Region community groups and budding artists can now apply for their share of funding under seven new grant categories. Council’s bi-annual community grants and the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants launched on February 1, providing funding from $2000 to $20,000. Mayor Peter Flannery said this round of grants was the latest in a range of funding opportunities for local organisations. “This assistance is more important than ever, with the community and arts sectors some of the hardest hit by forced COVID closures and an inability for many to claim job keeper assistance,” Mayor Flannery said. “Council has proudly given more than $720,000 worth of grants to community groups this financial year alone and we’re not slowing down anytime soon.” Mayor Flannery said organisations had until March 10 to get their applications in for the grants. Have your say on dog beach
Scarborough dog beach survey is closing soon.
STORY JODIE POWELL
HOW TO HAVE YOUR SAY
TIME is running out to have your say on the future of the Queens Beach North Dog Off-Leash Area (DOLA) at Scarborough. Community consultation will help determine whether the area remains open to dogs off-leash, with a Moreton Bay Regional Council survey closing on February 19. Queens Beach has been the subject of a dogs offleash trial for the past four
Search ‘Queens Beach North’ at moretonbay.qld.gov.au years and Mayor Peter Flannery said a final decision on its future was long overdue. “There’s been a lot of modifications to the trial at this site, now we are conducting a final and formal community consultation period that will end February 19,” Mayor Flannery said.
He said the response to the survey, launched in December, had been overwhelming, but he wanted to ensure all voices were heard. “Nearly 1500 responses have been received so far and we haven’t even hit the February 19 cut-off date yet,” he said. “So if you’re a resident, beach-goer, or dog lover, please make sure you share the survey link with your friends and family so that they can have a say.” Mayor Flannery said
Council wanted to hear from the full spectrum of beach users to understand how the proposal to keep the area off-leash affected people, the amenity, and the environment. “This will put an end to four years of uncertainty for residents and dog owners in the region so it’s important you have your say,” he said. “Once the survey responses are analysed, a comprehensive report can come back to Council for a final decision in April.”
Until then, Mayor Flannery urged dog owners to take responsibility for their pets, whether offleash or on. “Regardless, please remember to always maintain effective control of your pets, which includes leashing your dog while walking from your car to the DOLA,” he said. “There is also clearly marked signage that designates where the DOLA starts and ends, as well as other relevant information.”

PRIORITY AREAS
MORETON Bay Regional Council is calling on businesses and the community to join Team Moreton Bay and embrace its Regional Economic Development Strategy for the next 20 years. Mayor Peter Flannery launched the vision during an event for business and community leaders at Eatons Hill Hotel on February 3, outlining his optimism for the decades ahead, spearheaded by a COVID-19 recovery that had already begun. It followed formal endorsement of the strategy by Council earlier that day. “The historical success of our traditional industries has provided us with solid foundations for success but rapid advances in technology, industry modernisation, major changes in global trade, and of course the impacts of COVID-19 mean the world
1. Advanced manufacturing 2. Food and agribusiness 3. Knowledge, innovation and entrepreneurship 4. Tourism, sport and major events has changed forever. We have to continue to change too,” Mayor Flannery said. “When Queensland’s Treasurer Cameron Dick delivered the COVID-19 Fiscal and Economic Review in September, employment was forecast to grow at 3.5 per cent through to the June quarter 2021. It is now forecast to grow at 6.75 per cent. That’s 77,300 more jobs than expected, for a total of 160,000 jobs over the year to the June quarter 2021. And this is why, against all odds, I know there is opportunity.” The Council’s Regional Economic Development Strategy articulates a plan to modernise the region’s economy during the next
two decades by making it bigger, bolder and brighter. It aims to do this by building a $40 billion economy, creating 100,000 new jobs, attracting 16,000 new businesses and making the region one of the top 10 regional knowledge and innovation hubs in Australia and giving youth more career opportunities. Mayor Flannery said the region needed to attract new industries that would provide high value to the economy by embracing new innovations and smarter technology such as digital communication infrastructure, medical research hubs, nurturing local entrepreneurs and start-ups; and facilitating new investment. The REDS identified four priority industries − advanced manufacturing; food/agribusiness; knowledge, innovation and entrepreneurship; and tourism, sport and major events. An action plan has been developed for the first 18
months which identifies measurable activities for the strategy’s implementation. In addition to this, an annual economic scorecard will be developed to track progress towards the identified 2041 goals and will also capture a variety of annual changes and trends across the region and economy. “We can’t do any of it alone. This strategy has been developed collaboratively with contributions from local businesses, chambers of commerce, business and industry associations and many other stakeholders,” he said. Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism Chairman Shane Newcombe welcomed the strategy at a crucial time for maximising economic development opportunities. “I commend the Mayor on his 100-day vision to formulate this bold plan for the region’s future. It is a credit to his leadership and that of CEO Greg Chamello,” Mr Newcombe said.

Series pilot making a difference STORY JODIE POWELL
MAKE A DONATION
A NEW online series filmed at Mango Hill aims to bridge cultural and relationship gaps in multicultural societies. The brainchild of Amit Mehta, Different Worlds, is a comedy-drama that explores the complexity of intercultural relationships. Mehta came to Australia from India about four years ago, living first in Sydney before moving to Mango Hill. Since he arrived, he’s been observing differences in the way Australian and Indian communities interact individually and with each other and developed a curiosity about why those differences occur. A desire to fulfill that curiosity led him to write a draft for the series pilot of Different Worlds, which in turn led him to writing workshops. It was there he met Steve Haynes, with whom he worked to develop the final script. “I had been observing a few things like the differences between the Indian and Australian communities,” Mehta said. “We work together, but are we really good friends

In steps Irish-Australian Patrick, who initially baffles Rohan with his stereotypically ocker approach to life. “Their background is altogether different,” Mehta explained. “My characters stay in one house and share a lot of things together and when Rohan and Patrick go through their cultural differences there are moments of when there are clashes. “They resolve those gaps

by coming out of their comfort zone.” And that’s where the comedy comes in, Mehta said, as the characters move from clashing to a more light-hearted approach. “They’re closing gaps, even though there’s a lot of differences but they under-
stand each other better.” Adding to the mix is Tilly, who comes from a family of lawyers, but wants to be an environmentalist and follow her passions. “It’s a story about friendship, love between an Indian guy and an Australian girl,” Mehta said.
“There’s an interesting contrast of relationships being formed between characters.” As his first directorial venture, Mehta funded much of the pilot, which was shot almost entirely in the Moreton Bay Region as COVID-19 restrictions
came to an end in mid-2020. He is sourcing funding to produce future episodes of what he hopes will be a three series web production by pitching to production companies and through a crowd-funding page: australianculturalfund.org.au/ projects/different-worlds/

However, the indoor 18m program pool remains closed while it is converted to a 32-degree water pool. This is expected to be completed by mid-year. ‘Game changer’ on our roads STORY NICK CROCKFORD CLONTARF has become the first suburb in Australia to have a new “game-changing” road surface made from used tyres collected in this region. About 700m of King St, between Maine Rd and Snook St at Clontarf, has been resurfaced using Carbonphalt, a new product from Austek, in Grice St. Developed over 10 months, with Stapylton company Pearl Global, used tyres from this region were processed using thermal desorption to extract carbon black and fuel oil. Austek then used the fuel to power its plant and recovered carbon black for a new stronger, more durable and darker asphalt. General Manager of Austek Asphalt Production David Simmons said the stretch of King St was upgraded last month with Carbonphalt made from 22,115 used tyres. “If you look at news reels, used tyres are one of the biggest problems in Australia,” Mr Simmons, who has been in the industry 42 years, said. “But we couldn’t use passenger tyres so much, or heavy truck tyres, because of the rubber and content. “This process uses everything. It is comparable in cost and we hope to get

more roads in this region. “We are talking to other councils. The level of interest is great as it’s a game changer in our industry. There’s been nothing like it that I’ve seen. It’s unheard of. It’s a world first.”
Paul Morris, of Norwell Motorplex, tested the new surface on the track near Ormeau: “We punished it pretty hard. This should be everywhere. It has all the properties of normal asphalt.
“For us it had to be durable and have good grip levels in the wet. It ticks the box on environment.” Mayor Peter Flannery was delighted 22,000 tyres were not going to andfill. “I was shocked to learn
70 per cent of Queensland tyres end up in landfill, and with around 130,000 registered vehicles here in Moreton Bay, I believe we need to do our part to reduce the number of tyres going to the tip,” Mayor
Flannery said. “Tyres can take up to 80 years to break down and take an enormous amount of space in landfill, so I’m thrilled to be using a waste product as part of an infrastructure solution.”
may have between 200 and 280 units, if all were developed. Work is well under way on one block, which will have more than 50 units, but at this stage there is also only one option for motorists turning onto Kinsellas Rd West. “At the moment there will be a left turn in and left turn out for the latest
unit blocks, which doesn’t make much sense,” Mango Hill Progress Association (MHPA) President Laurence Christie said. “Those motorists will have to turn around somewhere which will impact others coming through on that road,” he said. Multiply that by five, and residents fear growing congestion up to the round-
about at Lamington Drive where vehicles can turn around and head out of the village. One solution put forward by MHPA is to widen Natham St, at the rear of the four blocks, enabling residents to join Kinsellas Rd West along McKenzie Rd. Councillor Jodie Shipway (Div 4) said in her latest newsletter that she was
working with residents on “positive outcomes”. “It’s fair to say the community has concerns around the ongoing traffic management and congestion that will come with the introduction of the new townhouses on Kinsellas Rd West,” Cr Shipway said. “Moreton Bay Regional Council is currently working with the Mango Hill
Progress Association and the wider community to provide information and, ideally, positive community outcomes around their concerns. “I checked in again with the integrated transport department and they don’t have any further information to share yet. I’m expecting more information in the coming weeks.”
Residents’ traffic fears over hundreds of new units STORY NICK CROCKFORD CONCERNS are growing in Mango Hill Village over traffic congestion from hundreds of new units being planned, or built, on one section of Kinsellas Rd West. It is estimated the four sizeable blocks, side-byside, close to the intersection with Discovery Drive,

Revamping the job market STORY KYLIE KNIGHT
FOR MORE INFORMATION
A NEW platform creating more meaningful connections for job seekers and employers will be launched this month. Employmeet is the brainchild of Ryan Elson and is a concept he has been building for a couple of years. He will relaunch it with a fresh website and renewed vigour on February 18. “Everyone is talking about the COVID cliff, after Job Keeper ends, and we need to do something different,” Mr Elson said. He said the current recruitment process was based on resumes, not on an applicant’s personality and what they could
visit employmeet.com genuinely bring to a role. He described Employmeet as an “old-school church car park”, where job seekers come along without a resume to meet potential employers over coffee and a sandwich. Mr Elson said it was an opportunity for jobseekers to speak to employers in an informal setting, present their personality and hopefully be asked to make further contact. “This takes the first communication from being a resume to being a person,” he said.
The other component of Employmeet is its website, which Mr Elson described as a dating site for jobs. “It’s essentially a virtual room for employers to meet
future employees, instead of putting a job ad on Seek and getting 250 resumes,” he explained. They can search for registered job seekers who
Employers can post job advertisements and job seekers can express an interest. There’s a 90-day free trial for employers at present, and the service is free for job seekers. The platform has the backing of Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism, which has helped Mr Elson launch the new website. Golf course site future remains MORETON Bay Regional Councillor Jodie Shipway (Div 4) has sought to clarify current concerns received by her office over the state of land on North Lakes golf course. North Lakes Resort Golf Club closed in August 2019 and plans revealed for a retirement village and aged care facility to be built on part of the site. The Save North Lakes Golf Course (SNLGC) group was formed and is working to try and stop any development and keep the land as green space. Cr Shipway said, in her latest newsletter, she had “escalated” the concerns to Moreton Bay Regional Council’s CEO but comments that Council was “holding up the decision” were “simply not true”. She said Council had no involvement in the work of an independent expert to resolve the issues between the landowner and SNLGC group. Once a decision was made, Council would look to get permission from both sides to send out a letter to North Lakes residents “summarising the facts”.

Journey’s been good for the soul STORY NICK CROCKFORD TWO years ago, Scarborough’s John Warren had a lightbulb moment and set off on a ‘soul music journey’. Suddenly, the moment arrived and months of hard work paid off in December when Our Soul Music

described as music which was played in clubs of northern England. “It’s hard to see struggling artists witness their work changing hands for thousands of dollars, being told how great their effort was, only to learn in many cases, they made so little from their recordings,” said Mr Warren, who has worked with soul singers and part owns a record label in the US. Though only weeks old, the book has prompted more contributions for a
second edition showing the popularity of the movement. John’s love of soul music began in the UK at the iconic Blackpool Mecca and in 1984 he started his own ‘soul night’ before emigrating to Australia in 1987. Find your perfect match STORY JODIE POWELL FORGET Tinder and Bumble – would-be lovebirds can step back in time when the Redcliffe Farmers and Artisan Markets set the stage for classic ’80s television dating show Perfect Match on Valentine’s Day. Market organiser Mark Power, of Goodwill Projects, said he had wanted to reprise the popular dating show for a few years and Redcliffe seemed like the right place to do it, with the beautiful bayside as the backdrop. Mr Power said Perfect Match was well known among the over-45 age group and he was looking forward to introducing younger people to match-making ’80s style. Long before The Bachelor, Farmer Wants a Wife and Married at First Sight
hit the small screen, Perfect Match paired lovelorn couples in 30-minute episodes before sending them off on a “honeymoon” to destinations such as the Sunshine Coast, Tangalooma or South Stradbroke Island – accompanied by a film crew. Mr Power said couples paired during the market’s Perfect Match would be spared the embarrassment of being accompanied on any dates and he was working with local operators on prizes. “We’ve got great prizes – a lot of local businesses are getting on board,” Mr Power said. “We’re having a lot of fun promoting it.” Contestants could win a picnic from Hollie & Lola Deli, a spruce up by hair gods Identity Hair Margate,

Honour for Antarctic pioneer
Deception Bay’s John Russell looks back on adventures in Antarctica as he receives and OAM for his work. STORY KYLIE KNIGHT JOHN Russell’s first trip to Antarctica may have been more than 70 years ago, but his memories of this expedition and his time building Mawson Station are vivid. The 100-year-old was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division (OAM) on Australia Day for his part in several expeditions to the Antarctic including his role in the 10-man team which set up the station in 1954. The Deception Bay resi-
dent is the last surviving member of that team, led by Sir Douglas Mawson. Mr Russell’s fascination with Antarctica started in childhood, in England, when he saw slides of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s pioneering exploration of the continent. He had a connection with Mr Russell’s school and the Shackleton home was just a three-mile bicycle ride away. “My dad, one night, said: ‘I’m fed up with you always nabbering on about this Antarctica, why don’t you write to Lady Shackleton
and find out what’s what’, Mr Russell recalled. “So, we did and she invited us there for afternoon tea. She told me then that her husband, who had died with a heart problem on his last trip, said that the days of ponies and dogs in the Antarctic are things of the past. Tomorrow is aeroplanes and tractors, so we need engineers who know how to use the tools. That’s what I decided to do.” And at the age of 18, he came to Australia to join an Antarctic expedition but
WWII intervened and he served his country instead. After the war, the 22-year-old had his chance to realise his dream with his first expedition to Macquarie Island in 1949, then Heard Island in 1952, before sailing on the Kista Dan in 1954 to what would become Mawson Station. “It’s an awful place to find because you go into a sort of a small harbour with only a small entry between the towering cliffs of ice. “When you get right inside the bay about 10 miles
in, there’s a little rocky island sticking out. So, that’s where we built the base and where it still exists today on that rock. “I was in Antarctica five years in total, because I was at each base 15 months or more. The last Antarctic visit was with the Yanks in 1956.” His work was supported by his late wife Joan, whom he married on December
19, 1953 before departing for another Antarctic expedition on January 4. For the man who had been fascinated with Antarctica since he was a boy, it more than lived up to his expectations. “I remember the great jagged snow fields and mountains of ice right to the coast, falling into the sea. It’s clean, cold, always below zero,” he said.

ter campaign is targeting a 2km radius of the Snook and King streets intersection, Elizabeth Ave, and Frawley Fields precinct, where Sue and Phil Johnson collect litter each day. Mrs Johnson said: “we fill our 240-litre council bin every week from litter in our local streets. We’re sick of picking up after people who just don’t have any re-
spect for the environment and their neighbourhood”. Mr Barkla said it was these waste warriors, along with Chrissy Foreman, Scott Lowe and Jill Sparks and others all over Redcliffe peninsula, who were helping keep litter out of the sensitive Hays Inlet and Moreton Bay marine ecosystems. “Sue and Phil inspired me to run this litter campaign because it’s just not fair that these dedicated locals have to clean up after others on a daily basis. I also have to give a shoutout to our local Council as they are responding to the litter issue with regular cleanups,” he said. “These are important marine habitats for turtles, dugong and other marine life that are struggling from litter and other pressures from humans.” There are 14 individuals or businesses who have ad-
opted a street in Clontarf and surrounding areas, and Mr Barkla is keen to involve more areas as momentum grows. “This is about bringing the community together and making people aware. We all have to do something about it. I want my grandkids to see live turtles,” he said. “Sadly, Covid-19 restrictions have seen a large increase in takeaway packaging and mask litter. Litter, like fast food packaging and cigarette butts, is tossed out carelessly from vehicles and by pedestrians onto our streets and into street gutters.” For more details on the Pristine Peninsula Community Group Campaign, contact Les Barkla via email: Pristinepeninsula4u@ gmail.com; phone: 0410 207 879; or via the Pristine Peninsula Facebook.

Celebrations
Family gathers for Cheryl THE family of Woody Point’s Cheryl Salisbury went to great lengths to celebrate her 70th birthday in late January. In a time when borders had been shut, masks donned and people on high alert due to COVID-19 getting four generations together was no easy feat, and they came from as far as the Gold Coast, Toowoomba and even Sydney. The guests made the trek for the gathering at her home on January 23, the day after her birthday, because of the impact she has had on each of them. As Ms Salisbury pointed out in her birthday speech, she does not have any children of her own but it is her extended family and the friends she has made in the Redcliffe area who are most important to her. She is pictured here with her great-nephew Carter Dendy.
Baby makes five THE birth of Rylee Mitchell on New Year’s Eve brought a fifth generation to 102-yearold Percy Masters’ family. The Woody Point resident was joined by his daughter Wendy Hill, 72; granddaughter Brenda Ceccato, 53; great grandson Joshua Mitchell, 26; and little Rylee to celebrate her arrival recently. Four of the five generations call the Redcliffe Peninsula home.
Little ray of sunshine
The retired teacher has been involved in a number of community groups and events on the peninsula including Redcliffe Family History Group, History Redcliffe, Redcliffe Show and the Redcliffe Pastime Group.

Charlotte, who weighed 3.84kg, was the third generation of her family to be born at the hospital. Mum Jamie-Leigh was born there in March, 1990 and Jamie-Leigh’s mum, Annette McNee, was born in the same hospital in March, 1968. Charlotte’s dad, Jamie, has lived on the Redcliffe Peninsula his entire life, but was born at the Royal Women’s Hospital.

School lifts the lid on plastic waste STORY KYLIE KNIGHT
JOIN THE WAR ON WASTE
PUPILS at Humpybong State School are learning how easy it is to be an environmental warrior, collecting hundreds of bottle tops which are being recycled in to Lego-style plastic bricks. Teacher Penelope Giddy, herself a passionate recycler, has been working with students for years to raise awareness of their power to make a difference. “Having always recycled with my family and with a local fruit and veg co-op that I help run, I realised it not only had ties to the students’ learning but real life value, so I offered to speak to the classes,” she said. “After plastic bags, bottle tops are the second biggest polluter with over 300,000 bottle caps being used in just one day in South East Queensland. We realised that we should try and keep some of these out of landfill and even just by us making a little dint it will actually make a difference. “Word has spread and more families have come on board. So, now our dint is larger.” Prep classes have been collecting bottle tops since
For more information, visit lids4kids.com.au 2019, a project which ties in perfectly with a sustainability unit they study. “The children collected hundreds, if not thousands of bottle tops. We also collect bread tags that go to the charity Bread Tags for Wheelchairs,” she said. The bottle tops are being sent to Ocean Crusaders, which has partnered with Lids4Kids. The organisation uses them to make plastic bricks, similar to big Lego-style blocks which are used to make items such as park benches. “Nine classes across Prep and Year 3 were involved last year, plus children in those grades from previous years who come to my classroom to drop off regularly,” Miss Giddy said. “Our goal is to educate our students, to keep more lids out of landfill and let kids know that they can help. This is important because kids care and really want to help. “Recycling is a learning PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | Humpybong State School recyclers have been busy collecting bottle tops. experience for life.”

Youth service ‘making magic’ happen
ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | Jennie Drever and Janine Botfield say Deception Bay Community Youth Programs COVID-19 response has lasting benefits. STORY JODIE POWELL DECEPTION Bay Community Youth Programs is taking the region to the world. When COVID-19 hit, the centre was forced to find new ways to continue delivering programs and services – and discovered DBCYP could not only survive, it could thrive. As the winner of the Building a Stronger Community award at the 2019 Moreton Bay Region Business Excellence and Innovation Awards, DBCYP is no stranger to delivering
top-notch community services and was committed to not missing a beat because of a pandemic. Directors Jennie Drever and Janine Botfield said creative thinking that was the hallmark of their COVID-19 response has had lasting benefits and led to the development of programs that can not only be delivered in Deception Bay, but other communities too. “Immediately in March we put staff on two weeks’ notice for home work, and participants on one week’s notice,” Ms Botfield said. “We thought ‘what can we pivot’ to continue to deliver
as seamlessly as we can using cloud-based platforms. “We were thinking very strategically about opportunities – what can we get out of this.” Ms Drever said the transition to web-based delivery was easier than expected. “When you’re in crisis, it causes you to be creative,” she said. “We ran parenting programs online – we would not have attempted that if it was not for COVID and now we do both online and in person. “The DBay Families Facebook page developed craft packs with the neighbourhood centre that were de-

livered to the community – that was a nice example of how we were able to have in-depth engagement. “We’re still having events and playgroups but they’re so much richer.” Ms Botfield said forcing services online allowed DBCYP to try delivery methods the service had discussed but had not had the opportunity to test. “I think the interesting thing is that we were looking at things like digital youth work, which Europe has been doing for years. “We’re now using platforms that young people migrate to naturally.

Ms Botfield said the centre would reap the benefits of what it had learnt for years to come. “There’s stuff that we did in COVID that will now let us grow. We couldn’t sustain ourselves as an organisation that was grant-based and now we can deliver services that are transferrable. “For example, we could sell online parenting to Caloundra and then they take over the delivery, tailoring it to their market. “That’s the magic of what we are doing – bringing the world to Deception Bay and taking Deception Bay to the world.”
I’m not a fan of sharp objects piercing my body. As the covid vaccine approaches, you might feel like me; a bit worried! ‘Has it been rushed?’ ‘Is it safe?’ We are in a very enviable situation. By the time the vaccine comes to us, other countries will have had it for months. If something was going to go wrong, we would know. I’m going to roll up my sleeve, put on my big-boy-pants, and get the jab. It’s no mistake, those areas co-operating with authorities are doing better than those areas fighting.

Carefree living’s a way of life STORY JODIE POWELL
FIND OUT MORE
THE demand for low maintenance living continues to rise, according to Stockland regional development manager Pauline Barton. Ms Barton said buyers across the Redcliffe peninsula were increasingly recognising the benefits of housing that left plenty of time to enjoy the region. “We’ve seen a huge rise in popularity for turnkey homes – from our more affordable townhomes at Newport and our exclusive retirement living community,” Ms Barton said. “Each new release has buyers jumping at the chance to claim a slice of that idyllic Moreton Bay lifestyle, in our bayside community on the water’s edge.” Ms Barton said she expected Stockland’s latest release − eight stunning waterfront townhouses with plunge pools and shared private pontoons – to be equally popular. “These new luxury townhomes have the lake for a backyard – a first for Newport,” she said.
Visit stockland.com.au/ residential/qld/newport/waterfront-living or phone 0408 416 091. “It’s one of the last chances to purchase a lakefront home in Newport’s premium Quay precinct.” Each of the four-bedroom townhouses includes a large multi-purpose room, study nook and two living areas, stone bench tops in the kitchen and a wine fridge and steam oven, as well as the option of adding a butler’s pantry. The release of the luxury terrace houses, which are priced from $1.19 million, follows the launch of six townhouses in the Whitehaven release, which were aimed at the first home-buyer market. With three or four bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and two-car garages in a range of floorplans, the townhouses – priced from $495,00 − meet the criteria for the HomeBuilder and First Home Buyer grants, Waterfront living and a low maintenance lifestyle are proving popular at Newport. each of which is $15,000.

Gesture sends twins in a spin
PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | Twins Sophie and Abby Javernig received two new scooters after their family unwittingly bought a stolen one.
STORY KYLIE KNIGHT TWINS Sophie and Abby Javernig have seen the best and worst of human nature in the past couple of months – they have been victims of crime, but also beneficiaries of extraordinary generosity. Mum Danielle said the girls, aged 11 years, saved up for months, putting aside birthday and Christmas money, so they could buy their dream scooter. “Everyone in the family had given them money,” Mrs Javernig said. The girls did not have enough money to buy two, so decided they would share one.
RIDE ELECTRIC REDCLIFFE is at 132 Sutton St, Redcliffe. Search Ride Electric North Brisbane on Facebook. Mrs Javernig found an electric scooter on an online marketplace. It was a Zero 9 electric scooter, a make and model her sister had recommended. The family paid for it and collected it in person, not realising it had been stolen. But its owner had been keeping an eye out for it online and alerted police when the advertisement appeared. Soon after, Mrs Javernig received a call from police.
“We had to give it back. The girls were devastated. I think they thought we were joking, because we play tricks on them and they’re only 11 and didn’t think it was for real,” she said. Keen to save others from the same misfortune, she posted a warning on a scooter forum which was seen by Corinne Lee from Ride Electric at Redcliffe. She remembered the family, who had previously visited her shop to have the scooter’s flat tyre fixed. “I thought it was a horrible that happened to them and I also knew what our scooter community was like and thought they would help,” Mrs Lee said.
“I set up the Go Fund Me page and people started donating money. Our supplier found out and offered to donate the scooters instead.” That supplier is Ian Le Garth from Ride Electric, who is the sole wholesaler and importer of Zero scooters in Australia. The scooters he gave the girls are valued at almost $1700 each. Mrs Lee said the money already raised, via the Go Fund Me page, was donated to another customer whose scooter had been stolen. “I was blown away. I was in shock that people could be so nice and do these things. It restored my faith in people,” Mrs Javernig
said. The girls are now riding the scooters to school each day. Mrs Lee could not be happier with the outcome and is looking forward to seeing more of the family, now they are back on the road. She and husband Mitchel bought their first scooter in February 2020 and opened their shop in July. “It’s a really good community – people from all walks of life and ages. Everyone gets on because they have that common interest,” she said. Mr Lee said he was was planning to introduce a dot-matrix system for his customers, so their scooters could be more easily identified and tracked.

Lifestyle Janice keen to boost visitors STORY JODIE POWELL THE NEW president of the Redcliffe Arts Society is looking forward to showcasing the talents of members and working closely with fellow Old Redcliffe Fire Station tenant, the Redcliffe Pottery Group. Janice Charlish says she wants to build on the success of previous years and is relishing the opportunity to bring more visitors into the gallery at the Old Fire Station, as COVID-19 restrictions ease. “I would like to see monthly guided gallery tours – there are over 30 retirement villages in the region with a courtesy bus and we can offer a lovely place to visit,” she said. “My vision is to assist with this successful space. “The vision I have is to activate and enhance what is already here.” The Society’s library is being brought into the 21st century, Mrs
Charlish said. “We will computerise our library, which has about 1300 books and lots of photos, these will be archived and recorded in our inventory system.” Mrs Charlish said the work would make it easier for members to tap into its resources. “We have a retired librarian working on this.” Mrs Charlish will remain the president of the Moreton Bay Arts Council - a regional umbrella group for all arts - as well as continuing to serve on Moreton Bay Regional Council’s COVID-19 Taskforce project team, representing arts, crafts and culture. She said she loved working in the Redcliffe Art Society’s gallery shop and getting to know more about exhibiting artists. “I work in the shop once a month and I will continue to do that because it’s grassroots you get to know everyone.”

Garden TOP TIPS Potting: Use a coarse, free-draining potting mix. Position: Most varieties need 6-8 hours of full sun, particularly to encourage flowering and reduce pests and disease
Stunning succulents
Pests: Keeping succulents in full sun will reduce pests and disease such as aphids and mealybugs. They can also fall victim to red spider mite, scale, whitefly, snails, slugs, mice and caterpillars.
Watering: Many cacti and some succulents will thrive on minimal moisture because they are very good at storing water. But, if you want more flowers, regular watering will help things along.
PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | Redcliffe Garden Centre horticulturalist Tylor Elmsly with some of his favourite succulents.
Pruning: Those spreading too far or growing too high can be pruned. The best time is late winter and early spring. Do this using clean secateurs or a knife. Unwanted sections can be used as cuttings to strike new plants.
STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WHEN people think of succulents, they often think of the compact, rose-shaped varieties but these are just the tip of the water-storing plant, according to the experts at Redcliffe Garden Centre. The centre’s Sondra Grainer and Tylor Elmsly said there were thousands of varieties, including many you would not think were succulents, such as frangipani, euphorbia, snake plants, jade and cacti. “You can do full hanging baskets briming with flowers, with succulents,” Ms Grainger said. “They flower for six months
of the year, so you have good, vibrant colour.” The plants are also an easy and reliable option for lowmaintenance gardens or for gardeners whose thumbs are not so green. “They’re quite forgiving, so if you forget to water them, they’re OK,” Mr Elmsly said. “They are good to fill up problem areas, where nothing else will work.” Some of the varieties which are good for filling a gap include pig’s

face, portulaca and Aptenia. When succulents are planted in garden beds they don’t require much TLC, but those in small pots do. The best way to determine if they need a drink is to “do the finger test” to see how damp the soil is. If it feels dry, it is time to water.
Good, vibrant colour Succulents need good drainage, so a coarse potting mix is recommended. You can buy succulent and cacti potting mix to be safe. If you want to fertilise, there are products specifically for

succulents and cacti in liquid and granular form. “This is only necessary if you want them to flower more. The potting mix should have everything the plant needs,” Ms Grainger said. Succulents are perfect for youngsters keen to experiment in the garden. “They don’t have to be gentle with them - if they break they can propagate more plants with that piece,” Ms Grainger said. “And if they forget to water them, they won’t die overnight.” They can also plant them in cute little pots and get creative with succulent art. You can make a succulent ball using two wire hanging baskets
joined together at the top and planted out so they grow on the outside. They fill out, spread quickly and provide great coverage and colour. So, what are their favourites? For Ms Grainger, it is variegated portulaca because it has interesting foliage, can be grown in hanging baskets and its flowers are spectacular. For Mr Elmsly, it is the desert rose because you get pretty flowers without a lot of effort. “You can get every colour under the sun, even doubles,” he said. Redcliffe
PHOTO BEN MCSHEA (BEAK Photographics)
THE hit Disney musical Moana Junior is coming ashore for four shows at Redcliffe this month. ROAR Academy and Redcliffe Musical Theatre’s Youth will bring the adventures of Moana and her village of Motunui to life on stage at the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre. Moana Junior is a musical adaptation of the 2016 Disney animated film and features all the beloved songs from the film, written by award-winning composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina, including How Far I’ll Go, Shiny, and You’re Welcome. This heart-warming comingof-age story follows the strongwilled Moana as she sails across the Pacific to save her village and discover the truth about her heritage. Moana and legendary demigod Maui embark on an epic journey of self-discovery.
VISIT redcliffeentertainmentcentre.com. au or phone 3283 0407. Kippa-Ring’s Kayla Pahl, 16, and North Lakes’ Sienna Randall, 13, are playing the lead role of Moana, alongside Ned Kelly, 17, who will play Maui. Redcliffe Musical Theatre principal Madeleine Johns said Ned was recently in the Dance Ensemble of Mamma Mia. “He is definitely a star in the making – and someone to look out for on stage in future productions,” she said. There are 38 young actors in the cast, aged between eight and 18 years of age. “The story is one of belief in yourself, how to have faith and how to overcome obstacles
and seemingly i n s u r m o u n t abl e odds,” Johns said. “It’s uplifting, motivational and lots of fun.” The cast, from across the Moreton Bay Region, will give the show a Re d c l i f f e f l avo u r not just because they are performing it there, but also because it celebrates many of the cultures woven into the fabric of the seaside community. “We are
celebrating the diversity of cultures in our region in Moana, where we have cast members from many and varied cultural b a ck g ro u n d s. We particularly celebrate the Maori, Fijian and Samoan backgrounds that flourish in our family of performers,” Johns said. “Audiences can look forward to a thoroughly enjoyable day out at the theatre, beautiful music, a fabulous cast of young
performers who will literally blow you away with their talent, fantastic costumes and wonderful story-telling The show is a welcome return to live theatre for the ROAR actors, whose last major production at Redcliffe Entertainment Centre was The Lion King Jnr in February last year. It received 11 award nominations from the Gold Palm Theatre Awards and Johns hopes Moana Junior is equally impressive. Moana Junior will be staged at Redcliffe Entertainment Centre on February 12 at 7pm; February 13 at 2pm and 7pm; and February 14 at 2pm. Tickets are $30 for adults, $27.50 concession; $25 for children; $100 for a family of two adults and two children (plus booking fee).

G'DAY all,
For my first column I thought I'd take the time to introduce myself. I'm a born, bred and proud Peninsula resident. My family has been on the Peninsula and operated a range of businesses and industries since the 1940s, including building, dressmaking, tailoring, establishing Redcliffe's first nightclub in 1946 – ‘The Ace of
Clubs’ - above Comino's Arcade, hairdressing, mechanical, earthmoving, maintenance, property development, and now retail bait and tackle, as the owner of Hornibrook Bait & Tackle at Clontarf. Growing up on the Peninsula gave me a wonderful grounding and fishing education while exploring its foreshores. One of my earliest fishing memories is being with my grandmother on
Redcliffe jetty aged about five. Since those early days, I've developed and expanded my fishing experiences, targeting a range of species across Australia, and also being fortunate enough to have fished internationally on several occasions. I've lived in Cairns, Arnhem Land in the NT and the Pilbara region of Western Australia, and fished all these regions, in addition to the Kimberley, northern NSW,
South East, Central, Northern and Far Northern QLD, plus internationally in Costa Rica, Guatemala, and several trips to Papua New Guinea. Periods spent working commercial long line tuna boats and prawn trawlers have also added to my experience. I'm passionate about introducing new fishos, particularly juniors, to our sport and pastime of fishing. I truly hope they'll experience the same amount of pleasure and excitement that I have over the years, and still do, when I can manage to get out myself. As we go forward, I hope to share with you some of the learnings and education I've received from being fortunate enough to have fished and interacted with some of Australia's most respected and experienced fishermen, both domestically and internationally, plus what I'm constantly learning while in the shop. Thanks for reading ladies and gents. And remember … Talk to old people, they know stuff you don't. Talk to young people, they know stuff you don't.

THE Redcliffe Peninsula Game and Sportfish Club is gearing up for another great year of fishing, according to chairman Maddy Eagle. They began the year with the Simrad Redcliffe Australia Day Billfish Competition and Ms Eagle said members could once again look forward to the annual Sportfish Competition later in the year. Membership of the club has grown in the past two years, with about 80 people of all ages signed up. “We’re getting more kids joining, which is great – they’re the future of the club,” Ms Eagle said. She said club members didn’t need to be fishing experts – she and her husband joined seven years ago knowing nothing about game fishing, but soon found themselves armed with a wealth of knowledge thanks to the generosity of long-standing members. “We moved to the Peninsula seven and a half years ago – we had a speed boat, but we knew nothing about fishing,” Ms Eagle said
“We were lured to this area because we loved sitting on the deck at the Moreton Bay Boat Club and thought 'wouldn’t it be nice to live here’. “We found out more and more about fishing – being a member is an education as well as the social aspect of it.” The club focusses on two areas of fishing – Sports Fishing, which takes in fishing for all species offshore, in the Bay, rivers and dams, while Game Fishing focuses on bigger species such as marlin, mahi mahi and tuna. While major competitions are held several times a year, members vie for glory each month with two 'fish of the month’ competitions, Ms Eagle said. The club also holds a club meeting on the second Wednesday of the month, where members can share their stories and hear from guest speakers. “We enjoy fishing with each other and telling our fishing stories,” Ms Eagle said. What does an Agent control?
So what are the things that an Agent control? Their professionalism. Vital is their enthusiasm & attitude. An Agent absolutely controls their effort. Is it never say die and absolutely 100%? It’d be easy to give up on a property the moment things get tricky, but to me this is not commitment to the owners or the sale process. An Agent can absolutely control their quality of marketing. They can control the way they interact with buyers. It’s often the simplest things like answering calls, turning up on time (even 10 minutes early). Being friendly. An Agent absolutely controls their smile. They control their knowledge and training, education (continual selfimprovement is in my view particularly important). An Agent control’s the

In most sizeable markets an individual Agent cannot control price movements. There is simply too much scale and too many factors at play that can impact prices even over a short period of time. However, any Agent (good, bad or indifferent) whilst not being able to actually control overall the prices in a market will typically have a major influence on each individual sale and the price outcome of each sale.

advice they provide, before, during and after a contract is signed (this is often just the start of when the real work begins). Over the years I’ve learnt that an Agent will have a massive influence on negotiations but ultimately what other people do such as neighbours other Agents and their sellers cannot be controlled. An Agent cannot control Buyers, their Solicitors, Banks/Brokers, Valuers, Building Inspectors, the list goes on. Whilst an Agent cannot control these things, they can often have massive influence over them (good or bad. From many years working in real estate, probably the thing that sets apart the best in the business is their ability “to read the play”. All Agents whether they think about it or not control “THEIR STANDARD” and this truly impacts so many aspects of a sale. If you are thinking of selling feel free to give me a call. As always I trust you have a wonderful week

What our sellers say...............
"I appointed Jan Jones for the above property. It had been intermittently on the market with other agents for some time, and was at the higher price end of the market this time. Jan personally participated in regular open days and private viewings, internet and newspaper advertising when available at her cost. She listened and provided feedback. She negotiated a favourable sale under difficult circumstances. In addition the lower commission charged to me as a "senior" was much appreciated. I would recommend her to any potential sellers." Your sporting moments by Sport Briefs Cup draw
Redcliffe PCYC has been drawn in Group A of this season’s Canale Cup with Westside, Brighton and Bardon La Trobe. Deception Bay Dragons are in Group B with Logan Village, Clairvaux and Jimboomba. Winners of the five groups go through to the knockout stage.
Taking shape
Work on the new $13.85 million Griffin Sports Complex on Henry Rd is progressing with underground work and the pad for the new clubhouse taking shape, said Councillor Jodie Shipway.

Stars of the future step up PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | The Under-15s Adrian Vowles Cup side, which will play in Charleville at the end of February, working hard at training last week.
STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE Dolphins’ juniors system has long been a nursery for some of the game’s brightest stars, and it was the club’s youngest players who flew the flag during last year’s COVID-19-ravaged season. They are ready to do it all again, with players signing up in droves to play in one of more than 40 teams ranging from Under-6s to Under-17s. Football Operations Manager Steve Crawford said there could be up to 45 teams this year, as the club’s Under-13s and Under-15s prepared to head to Charleville later this month for the Adrian
Vowles Cup competition. It’s an annual contest held before the Junior Rugby League Brisbane competition kicks-off in March. Crawford said it was a chance for the players to visit country Queensland to see what it’s like and play against teams from across the state. “We’ve been successful in the past, but it’s more about the experience and what that does for the kids’ development,” he said. It comes as players start signing on and training for the 2021 season, after a disrupted 2020 season due to COVID-19. Crawford said it was an achievement to “get 10 rounds in, plus finals” during a season which re-
sulted in the cancelation of the Intrust Super Cup competition. “Rugby League Brisbane did a good job to get the clubs on board, we ended up with 12,000 kids playing rugby league. It was a fantastic result – all the clubs did their bit to make sure it was a safe environment,” he said. There were more than 7000 people at the Dolphins fields every second weekend last season. Crawford said the club had a proud history of juniors rising through the ranks, under the leadership of the late Des Webb and now Bob Jones. “The focus has been on getting more kids to play rugby league, providing
that financial support by not charging what we should be charging. It’s allowed families to participate, particularly families with multiple children,” he said. In his view, playing rugby league gave children the opportunity to not only play in a team sport, but also develop mateship that often stayed with them for life. He has been involved in coaching since the early 1990s and he still will bump into players from those days, who tell him of the mates they still have from that time in their lives. The club also offers players a genuine pathway to the Intrust Super Cup and NRL, Crawford said. “They don’t have to go
anywhere else. It’s a onestop-shop,” he said. He said many former players had a proud association with the club which channelled them to volunteer, coaching and administrative roles. “There’s a real family atmosphere. There are a number of fathers who played first grade here who are now coaching sides their kids are playing in,” he said. Crawford started playing for the Dolphins as a 17-year-old after he moved from Thargomindah. He said costs were low for families thanks to loyal sponsors including Andrew Reibelt, a former player who made the move to Redcliffe as a youngster too.
The Lakes FC has been drawn in Group C of the women’s Elaine Watson Cup competition with Ipswich Knights, Grange Thistle and Coomera Colts. Winners of the five groups go through to the cup knockout stages.

THE BATTLE for the Goldie Cup will resume this month with two of the region’s football clubs teaming up to support Nathan Goldstiver. ‘Goldie’ played for North Pine and Narangba Eagles in the Brisbane City Leagues for many years, but is now tackling motor neurone disease. To support the Goldstiver

ing of the Goldie Cup. “Goldie deserves all we can kick-in as a community to assist him and his young family,” said friend, and Goldie Cup co-ordinator, Malcolm Van de Graaff of Narangba Eagles. “Last year’s focus was on raising funds. This year the main thing is getting football and family together; funds raised will of course assist the family. “The Goldie Cup is when North Pine and Narangba
put competition aside and stand together for the best show of camaraderie and community support for footballing families. “It also provides a pre-season local derby between the senior men’s players and we invite the wider community to attend in a show of support for Goldie.” There are three games Under 18s at 1pm, Capital League 2 Reserves 3pm, Capital League 2 5pm. A
gold coin entry, percentage of bar and canteen sales and proceeds from raffles and donations go to the Goldstiver family.

THE Winlaw brothers – JD and Maverick – became the fourth set of brothers to make their Division One debuts for Redcliffe Padres this season. Maverick had his first Division One game for Padres’ Grey side against Pine Hills Lightning, striking out two batters in his first dig. In a close match Padres trailed 2-1 before Nick Boys and Carter Bell brought them home 3-2 in the Greater Brisbane Baseball League encounter. JD made his bow for Padres’ Red team against Mudgeeraba and had a great game behind the plate as well as being one of the team’s best hitters with two singles. The Winlaw brothers joined the Bells, Fritschs and Wilsons in the club’s Division One roll of honour this season. Tom Beattie, who is 15, made his senior debut for Padres in the Division 5 clash at Toowoomba Rangers, twice getting on base and throwing out a runner from centre field. Padres’ Division 5 side was one of the few to bring home the points last weekend with a nail-biting 6-5 victory over Windsor Royals. John Humphreys “thrashed a double over the centrefielder’s head” to secure a walk-off win. Padres’ Division 1 sides found the going tough in their most recent outings. The Grey team went down 8-5 to Windsor Royals and Padres’ Red lost 16-6 to Redlands Rays.

The Internationals now hold a 3-2 lead in the annual President’s Shield match run by The Lakes Cricket Club at Woodside Oval. The Australians set a target of 136, which the Internationals overhauled with several overs in hand. In the juniors match, Team Theo beat Team Austin by just two runs.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD THE FULL signs are up at North Lakes Oztag. Such is its popularity, no more teams can be squeezed into the new autumn season at Woodside. More than 1000 players have registered in 93 teams – a far cry from the day seven years ago when there were just 12 sides. Venue manager Bek Robertson has seen those num-

code seasons wrap up. “It’s just grown through social media and word of mouth,” said Bek, “people are coming from all over the region, Bribie, Redcliffe, Clontarf, Bray Park. “It’s a social sport, no training nights or weekends. It’s (rugby) league minus the tackling. We just haven’t the field space to take any more teams this season.” The aim of Oztag which
was invented in 1992, is to get a tag on the side of your opponent’s shorts to stop them scoring. Other centres are at Ferny Grove and the Sunshine Coast. Age groups range from Tiny Taggers aged 3-5 years to seniors. The oldest at North Lakes is 67. Representative teams have been selected for this year’s State Cup tournaments being held on the Sunshine Coast.
Eight junior teams (aged Under 10-17, boys and girls) will be in action in April. Eight senior sides (Under 20s, Open, Mixed, Masters, Men Over 30 And Over 40) are in June. Selections for the Super Series will be made from the Sunshine Coast event. See picture gallery at moretondaily.com.au
Podium places for Polo Bears at state titles
North Brisbane Polo Bears Under 14 Boys with their silver medals.
NORTH Brisbane Polo Bears medalled three times at the Water Polo Queensland State Titles. There was one silver and two bronze for the Albany Creek-based club, which draws players from across the region and a number of Redcliffe schools. The Under 14 Boys swept through their round-robin stage and into the final where they won silver. Tian Markart was named
best goalkeeper in the division. Polo Bears’ Open Women, including Redcliffe student Jaden Weir, brought home bronze medals and in Charlize Andrews had the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. The Under 16 Girls, with Grace Lutheran College’s Tiana Doyle and Abbie Mcdonald, and Phoebe Dobson, of Mueller College, brought home bronze
medals, while the Under 18 Girls won their final match to finish fifth. In the Under 14 Girls, Polo Bears’ Maroon team lost a penalty shoot out in the semi-finals and lost to a goal in the dying seconds of their bronze-medal match. There was a similar story from the Under 14 Girls White, where the Polo Bears also lost their bronze medal match and finished fourth.

Ranking on line STORY NICK CROCKFORD
A WORLD ranking will be up for grabs when Deception Bay Boxing Club’s Waylon Law steps into the ring on March 5. ‘The Outlaw’ will face Justin “Iceman” Frost, from Brisbane, at the Eatons Hill Hotel for the vacant IBF Asia Oceania Super Lightweight crown. The winner of next month’s clash, their third
successive fight in six months, at that venue, will get the International Boxing Federation (IBF) belt and a world ranking in the top 15 at this weight. Tickets have been selling fast after their first two contests, in September and November, went the distance and were decided on a split decision and a rare majority decision. Law won the first fight, ending Frost’s unbeaten record, but the ‘Iceman’
took the second – both were for the Australian Super Lightweight title. Within boxing circles, they were also considered two of the fights of the year in 2020. “As this was the trilogy fight, it was decided to put a different belt on the line,” said Damian Smith, trainer at Deception Bay Boxing Club. “We’ve got time to work for this. We’re building up for another 10 rounds,
