BELOVED Redcliffe tearoom Teddies ’n’ Sweets is taking shape in its new home.

Having moved from its Cominos Arcade home of 14 years to a new venue just before Christmas, owner Anna Connor said it would be a little longer before she could offer high teas.

“I’m waiting on council approval for the kitchen, but I have a kitchen maker on standby,” Ms Connor said.

She has been overwhelmed by support from patrons, with many popping in to say hello, check out the teddies and buy a pork pie or English sweets.

“For people to come and find me means such a lot to me. The new shop is even better than the old one because people with walkers can park right out the front and there’s other parking nearby,” Ms Connor said.

Once the kitchen is installed, Ms Connor plans to

hold a grand opening.

“It will be lovely and bright, with loads of red, white and blue and Union Jacks, but it will still have that warmth people love.”

In the meantime, the teddies are settling in, with the iconic giant teddy taking pride of place.

Store mascot Watson, about whom Ms Connor has written a series of children’s books, is still in COVID-19 lockdown, but will return very soon.

Ms Connors said she looked forward to serving long-standing regulars and newcomers high tea.

“We take time to make it special – people usually come for a special occasion and we want them to have something to remember. It will be different in a new setting – we’ll help them make new memories,” she promised.

Bell sounds on day one STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WHEN school returns this week, the Zinyemba family will be celebrating the start of a new chapter for twins and Prep pupils Tanya and Tawana, and the final year of primary school for their brother Batsi.

The youngsters will also have sister Rutendo, in Year 4, looking out for them as they explore Mango Hill State School.

Principal Tracy Egan said they would be among about 230 pupils across 10 classes to start Prep this year – the school’s biggest Prep cohort since it opened in 2012.

The total school population has grown from 200 pupils to almost 1500 in that time.

Ms Egan expected the first day and first week to be similar to previous years, with added hygiene and social distancing requirements, and the school is encouraging parents to be involved in those memorable first moments.

“It’s really important to enjoy that first day with their child,” Ms Egan said.

She said the school held a meet-the-teacher afternoon on Friday for pupils and their parents to ease first-day anxiety. Her tip for parents helping their

Community heroes honoured STORIES KYLIE KNIGHT

THE WINNERS ARE ...

THE winners of this year’s Moreton Bay Region Australia Day Awards have made the region a better place to live during a particularly challenging year, according to Mayor Peter Flannery.

Their extraordinary efforts were recognised during a ceremony at Caboolture Sports Club on January 21.

Mayor Flannery said he had never been prouder to be an Australian than in the past 12 months because Aussies “rolled up their sleeves and got on with it”.

He said this year’s recipients were a fine example of this spirit.

They include Citizen of the Year Ronnie Benbow, of Cedar Creek, who founded the Carer’s Foundation in 2015, Australia’s only charity providing wellness programs to unpaid carers at no cost.

Mayor Peter Flannery said Mrs Benbow’s work had changed the lives of carers across Australia, improving their health and wellbeing, and giving them hope.

“Almost no one is prepared for the demands, expectations and even isolation that comes with suddenly becoming an unpaid carer for

The past year has been particularly challenging for carers, struggling with isolation during the COVID-19 shutdown.

Mrs Benbow said the difference the foundation’s pro-

grams made was life-changing and life-saving.

“Just seeing the difference that we make in our unique wellness programs inspires me every day to keep going,” she said.

“It’s a massive honour to be recognised and something that I would never have thought I would receive. I just love what I do.

This award is really for the all the carers out there, so please if you know of any carers, especially those not coping, let us know so we can support them.”

“I will keep going until we get our new carers wellness centre, which will be a centre that is available for carers 24/7. They can come any time before they hit that health crisis breakdown and they can come and recharge, do the programs. We would love that centre to be in the Moreton Bay area.”

The Moreton Bay Region’s other Australia Day Award winners included Young Citizen of the Year: Reegan Pellowe; Arts and Culture Award: Jim Higgins; Sports Award Winner: Lily Postlethwaite; Environmental Award: Bob Crudgington; and Volunteer of the Year: Melissa Redsell.

ENVIRONMENTAL warrior Bob Crudgington and writers’ advocate Jim Higgins, both Redcliffe peninsula residents were among those honoured in this year’s Moreton Bay Region Australia Day Awards.

Mr Crudgington received the Environmental Award for his efforts to raise awareness of environmental issues, improve local habitats specifically surrounding Redcliffe and Hays Inlet, and inspire the next generation of eco warriors since the Redcliffe Environmental Forum was formed in 2005.

Mayor Peter Flannery said Mr Crudgington was a true environmental leader who shared his passion for protecting the environment with everyone he met.

“Robert has been instrumental in creating and facilitating a range of initiatives to protect Moreton Bay’s stunning natural sur-

rounds,” he said.

“With a passion for marine environments, his work restoring and protecting saltmarsh at Hays Inlet has ensured this pristine area will continue to thrive for wildlife and locals to enjoy.

Mr Crudgington is a firm believer that if you look after the land, the land will look after you.

“My job as president of the Redcliffe Environmental Forum is mainly to facilitate and support all the wonderful people that work in the environmental community, whether it be koalas, turtles, looking after the bush, and more,” he said.

“It’s an honour to be recognised with this award but I’m just representing a large group of dedicated people who care about the environment and the wildlife around it.

“I hope this award highlights the value of people getting involved. I want everyone to participate and contribute. It doesn’t take

much to make a difference.”

Scarborough’s Jim Higgins is encouraging writers across the Moreton Bay Region to put pen to paper and pursue their passion in literacy, but it was his passion which earnt him the Arts and Culture Award.

As the President of the Fellowship of Australia Writers Queensland (FAWQ), Mr Higgins was instrumental in bringing the inaugural Readers and Writers Festival to the region this year.

Mayor Peter Flannery said his contribution to arts and culture had benefitted many. “In fact, thanks to Jim, we’ve had many people already register for the upcoming Readers and Writers Festival in June. Jim is also part of the Redcliffe Writers Group and volunteers for Writers Open Mic, which is often a drawcard for writers and visitors across South East Queensland to Moreton Bay,” he said.

Mr Higgins said it was a surprise to receive the award.

“To me, this acknowledgement should be for all those writers and people who work to make their life story a creative one,” Jim says.

Signalling return of corner store STORY NICK CROCKFORD CONVENIENCE is the driving force behind four new retail developments on a 5.5km stretch of Anzac Ave in this region, according to a retail expert.

The quartet - at the highway end of Kallangur, North Lakes, Mango Hill

and Rothwell – are either being built, ready to be built or going through the Development Application (DA) process.

However, four becomes five with construction now well advanced on another centre roughly 500m away (as the crow flies) on Kinsellas Rd West in Mango Hill Village.

With shops in all five, it appears to be a return of the corner store - but on a slightly larger scale along a major arterial road.

Call for all to take care ENSURING children travel safely to and from school is the responsibility of the entire community, according to the Officer-in-Charge of the Deception Bay Road Policing Unit.

Senior Sergeant Garth Peake said while parents, teachers and students themselves played a key role, other motorists shared the responsibility.

“Kids are not savvy with traffic movements and crossings,” Sen-Sgt Peake said. “They don’t always possess the skills and it’s confusing for some of the little ones.

“I see it as a whole community problem – it’s up to parents and other drivers to make sure kids are safe.”

Sen-Sgt Peake said police would not hesitate to fine or prosecute motorists breaching school zone

rules when school returns this week.

He said there were several steps to ensure the safety of children during school drop-off and pick-up times – 7am and 9am and 2pm and 4pm on school days.

“Speeding is an issue around 40km/h zones – you need to obey the signs and obey the crossing supervisors, take your time and show consideration. Pickup zones are also an issue – don’t pick your own, use the ones that are there.

“If you’re going to do something else, park your car and walk to get your child because a lot of kids don’t have road sense.”

Gun owners urged to safeguard firearms STORY JODIE POWELL FIREARMS owners across the Moreton Bay Region have been urged to consider boosting the security of their storage after several incidents where weapons were stolen.

A Moreton District Police spokeswoman said the stolen weapons had been stored correctly, but thieves had still managed to take them.

“We’re trying to encourage people to take extra steps such as CCTV,” the spokeswoman said.

Licensed firearm owners are required by law to store weapons in a compliant, locked safe when they are not in use, with ammunition stored separately in a secure container.

Speaking ahead of a planned audit of weapons license holders across the region, the spokeswoman said it was important to store keys to gun safes

“They shouldn’t be in a place where they can be readily located or in sight of intruders – for example not in an unlocked garage or shed,” the spokeswoman said.

“A person who possesses a firearm must take all reasonable precautions to ensure safe storage, that the firearm is not stolen or lost and that it does not come into possession of a person who is not authorised to possess it,” the spokeswoman said.

Supporting people with Parkinson’s Disease STORY JODIE POWELL LIVING with Parkinson’s Disease is a challenge, but for David and Angela Martin being part of a support group makes life easier.

Mrs Martin was in her 50s and the chef at the couple’s West End restaurant when she was diagnosed with the progressive neurological condition in 2000.

Mr Martin said they thought their world had come to an end.

“We grappled with the enormity of the situation as we knew nobody who was a sufferer of this disorder,” he said.

Joining a support group was a lifeline, they said.

“You get friendly with people who have the same problem as you - you don’t feel embarrassed if you can’t talk properly,” Mrs Martin said.

She said while many people associated Parkinson’s with tremors, there were other symptoms too, such as stiffness or slowed movement, and sharing experiences with others in the safe environment of a support group was liberat-

ing as well as educational.

“It’s a feeling of belonging to something,” she said.

Mr Martin said Parkinson’s was not widely understood by the community and group members say their movements are often mistaken for the actions of someone who is drunk.

Mrs Martin said support groups were like a second family, and being a mem-

ber helped her come to terms with her condition.

The Redcliffe Parkinson’s Support Group meets at the Redcliffe RSL Club from 10am-noon on the fourth Friday of every month, except December and January.

THE last time Melissa Redsell saw James Collen in 2003, he was a tiny newborn.

When she met him again last week, she found a strapping 17-year-old about to start his final year of high school.

Ms Redsell was a newly graduated nurse at Redcliffe Hospital when James was born, and he was her first delivery.

James’ mother, Helen, had met Ms Redsell when they worked together as nurses in the emergency department at the then Holy Spirit Hospital at Chermside (now St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside).

Ms Redsell transferred from Holy Spirit to Redcliffe Hospital as a student nurse, graduating and gaining a permanent position.

When Ms Collen went

into labour, she had no inkling a casual conversation with Ms Redsell before she moved to Redcliffe would come to fruition.

“I mentioned I was having a baby at Redcliffe and Melissa said wouldn’t it be funny if she was there when I came in to have the baby,” Ms Collen said.

Having waited for her parents-in-law to arrive to babysit her first son, Jonathon, Ms Collen arrived at Redcliffe Hospital about 5am.

“She rang me on the way,” Ms Redsell said.

BARRY Jennings’ final Christmas lights display at his Rothwell home achieved both its goals.

It raised around $1500 for Redcliffe Hospital’s palliative care department and all the lights now have new homes.

This was Mr Jennings’ 10th Christmas lights display which took four weeks to put up using more than 600m of lights, many trailing down from a sixmetre tree.

Hundreds of people visited the display at Wattle Rd and joined in the lucky draw raffle.

“The whole thing was a success, a most worthwhile exercise,” said Mr Jennings, who has sent all

WORK on the new Deception Bay overpass on the Bruce Highway is gathering pace with motorists and residents warned of more heavy machinery, noise, dust and temporary lighting.

The latest update on the $163 million project says the construction teams will continue with earthworks, drainage works and piling for the first of two new bridges across the highway.

Areas affected will be on the Bruce Highway, Old Gympie Rd, New Settlement Rd, Deception Bay Rd and the Eastern Service Rd. As a result, there may be localised traffic changes, speed limits, detours and traffic control in place.

With heavy machinery in operation, dust and noise may increase.

Cconstruction traffic near the work zones will increase and temporary lighting towers will be in place during nightwork.

Ross Shardlow said the friendships formed were just as important as the game itself.

“While it is a stimulating, complex game, it is a joy, and friendships evolve,” Mr Shardlow said.

His view is backed by former vice president Sue Kennard, who said the Redcliffe club was particularly sociable, with many members coming together for pre-COVID trips to Tangalooma,

“Bridge is a very big world – there’s lots of groups and competitions,” Ms Kennard said.

“There’s a big congress on the Gold Coast every year that attracts more than 2000 players from 21 countries.”

Mr Shardlow said playing sessions at Redcliffe attracted 40-50 people, with the club having a detailed COVID-19 plan that included social distancing and temperature checks

for every visitor.

“It’s a very cheap sport – it’s $5 a session to play and the sessions go for three-and-a-half hours and you get tea, coffee and biscuits,” he said.

Ms Kennard will hold free Learn to Play Bridge sessions from February 6 and said no experience was necessary. There is a textbook available for $20, but it is not compulsory.

Bowl up to honour memory of Lincoln STORY JODIE POWELL FRIENDS, family and the wider community will gather at Bramble Bay Bowls Club on February 14 to raise money for brain cancer research in memory of Lincoln Powell.

Lincoln was 43 when a brain tumour claimed his life in 2016 and since 2017 his beloved Bramble Bay Bowls Club has hosted an event to raise money for brain cancer research at the QIMR Berghofer Med-

ical Research Institute, building on fundraising efforts that started after he was diagnosed.

His mum, Wendy, said it was a fitting backdrop for the barefoot bowls, raffles and auctions that raise money for research.

“Lincoln was a member of the social club and he kept coming down even when he was not able to work,” she said.

“He said he wanted to have two wakes because he liked a beer and his mates

were either at the Belvedere or here.”

At Lincoln’s Bramble Bay wake, general manager Brendan Rodgers offered to host a memorial day in his honour. The first was held on Lincoln’s birthday – February 19.

Dad Peter said Lincoln had been driving a truck filled with beer and had stopped to deliver it when he had his first seizure – the first indication anything was wrong.

“When he woke up, the

ambulance driver had taken his keys and he demanded to know why,” Mrs Powell said.

Lincoln was taken to hospital, where initial scans cleared him, and was waiting on a urine test when a doctor called him into another room.

“They told us he had a tumour the size of a Mars bar,” Mrs Powell said.

Bramble Bay Bowls Club marketing manager Scott Davidson said the club was pleased to host Lin-

coln’s Memorial Day on the Green. “We’re donating 100 percent of all proceeds to the charity,” he said.

Since the first Lincoln’s Day in 2017, the event has raised more than $24,000.

The event, including live music from 3pm, is on February 14 from 10am. Barefoot bowls is $10, with all proceeds donated to QIMR. No bookings are needed, but guests will need to register electronically on the day to meet COVID-19 requirements.

Meet Jargo, a handsome boy who is very grateful to the person who saw him on the street and started feeding him.

When this Good Samaritan had to move, and was not able to take him with her, she took him to Peninsula Animal Aid (PAA).

He was very happy with this as he knew he would soon find his own home, where he could be looked after and loved forever.

New boat to the rescue STORY KYLIE KNIGHT

MEMBERS of Moreton Radio Yacht Squadron have welcomed a new, much bigger boat to their fleet thanks to a grant from Moreton Bay Regional Council.

The rescue boat will be used to retrieve broken down or damaged boats and set up the racing course and replaces one stolen during the COVID-19 lockdown in March/April last year.

Moreton Radio Yacht Squadron Commodore GarSTORY NICK CROCKFORD BRIAN Roselt remembers it well. He became ‘hooked’ on surf lifesaving after a few minutes sitting on a trailer at the Redcliffe club.

That was five years ago.

Today he is a Redcliffe Surf Lifesaving Club Patrol Captain, mentor to many and has surf lifesaving’s Bronze Medallion.

Mr Roselt is also part of surf lifesaving’s Waverunner 12 operations support team covering from Golden Beach, Caloundra around 10km up to Kawana.

In fact, Mr Roselt, now 57 and a Kippa-Ring resident, reckons surf lifesaving is something he may be able to do for decades.

“The biggest reward is teaching skills to others,” he said. “I love mentoring the younger members (at the SLSC) and hearing them paraphrase what they have been told.

“That and rescuing someone and giving them back to their family. I think there’s no more noble thing to be able to do.”

He found surf lifesaving, or surf lifesaving found him, during a conversation about swimming and surfing – both of which Mr Roselt said he “loves”.

“A friend of mine had (the surf lifesaving club’s) Patrol 6,” says Mr Roselt,

ry Russell joined committee members and Councillor Sandra Ruck (Div 5) at Jabiru Canal last week to launch the boat for the first time.

Mr Russell said Cr Ruck had been instrumental in connecting the squadron with council, so they could apply for a grant.

“I’m thrilled that we could throw the club a lifeline and give them $2190 toward purchasing a new dinghy through our Local Community Support Grant,” Cr Ruck said.

“With its membership base rapidly growing, it’s

fantastic that Council was able to help keep this yacht squadron afloat.”

The club paid for the motor at a cost of $1200 and has beefed up security.

“The councillor keeps dropping in to see how we’re going. Without her help, we probably wouldn’t be here,” Mr Russell said.

Moreton Radio Yacht Squadron is the second biggest in Queensland with about 40 members.

The squadron has three classes of boat and five sessions a week. It also hosts

events throughout the year.

Mr Russell said the rescue boat was essential when racing boats, which could cost between $500 and $10,000.

Sailing is on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and Sunday mornings.

The squadron is planning the Newport Classic to be held in the coming months, once the date has been approved by the state body.

Mr Roselt arrived on the peninsula at the age of two – “I got here as soon as I could,” he joked - and has never left.

The unanimous vote last week approved a “sweetner” for members of the public attending meetings.

“Arnott’s launched three other new flavours, but Moreton Bay Raspberry and Dark Choc is the only one I can remember. It’s definitively the best,” Mayor Flannery said.

“For as long as this biscuit is available on Australian shelves, we’ll have a packet to give to someone in the crowd attending our Council meetings. So, if you’ve not come along to watch a Council meeting for a while, maybe we can sweeten the deal.”

Beard shave a class act STORY JODIE POWELL

PUPILS at Deception Bay North State School collected more than 18,000 containers over 14 weeks in a bid to win the honour of shaving principal Troy Barath’s beard.

Mr Barath, who had sported a beard for the past four or five years, said he stopped trimming it in about June to give pupils something worth shaving.

He said while the school had a great track record of recycling paper, plastic containers and cans had not been on the radar.

“We’re really concerned about poppers, their straws and plastic, being so close to the bay – and we have a saying ‘pick up a popper straw and save a turtle’,” Mr Barath said.

“It was a nice way to end the school year and get the kids to have a sense of school spirit and competition.”

The school’s 350 pupils brought in 18,678 containers, which were cashed in for $1867.80, which the school will use to fund a future project.

The training focuses on delivering services to aged people, or people with disabilities, who want to continue to live independently in the community.

CEO David Worsnop said the program was aimed at mature-aged workers, parents or carers wanting to return to the workforce and people from cultural or linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Trainees learn in All About Living’s Sandgate training centre for two to three days each week, from 9am2.30pm during school terms.

Mr Worsnop said the flexible training was designed to accommodate the availability of parents and carers.

“Eligible applicants are able to join our study groups at any time,” he said.

Students then complete their mandatory 120 hours work placement in the community under the supervision of experienced employees.

“It’s all done with our experienced Support Workers so trainees can watch how they do it before doing it on their own,” he said.

“Our Support Workers are with us because they want to work in the community – they are passionate about what they do.”

Once they graduate, students are invited to interview for work opportunities as Support Workers with All About Living.

Friends and family help make Douglas’ big day STORIES KYlIE KNIGHT SCARBOROUGH’S Douglas Gomersall celebrated his 100th birthday with almost 100 friends and family at an event he says “made his day” on December 21.

Mr Gomersall, who lives at BallyCara retirement village, turned 100 on December 17, but celebrated the milestone during a reception at Redcliffe Leagues Club on December 21.

It was a chance to catch up with family and old friends, tell stories and have a few laughs, telling the gathering he was touched by the messages and well-wishes and had a “lovely, wonderful family that I’m truly very proud of”.

“Thank you all very much. It’s been a wonderful experience for me. I’ve got some lovely friends here … oh I could tell some stories,” he said laughing.

He was born in Nambour where his family had a butchery and cane farm before moving to Gympie, where they had a butchery, cold storage and were in the cattle industry.

He left school after Year 7 to join the family business as a butcher, but always preferred “the machinery side of things”. He enlisted in the Militia in April, 1942 and tried to join the Navy but was rejected due to a back problem. He was also rejected twice by the Army, but persisted and was accepted. Jean has three times the fun on 100th birthday

JEAN Chamberlain had not one, but three parties to celebrate her 100th birthday.

The Peninsula Park Retirement Estate resident, who turned 100 on December 16, celebrated with working members of the family on December 12, was guest of honour at a morning tea for family and friends on December 15, and held an “open home” for immediate and extended family on December 16.

Daughter Judi Ramsay said Mrs Chamberlain opened her letter from the Queen at the morning tea and enjoyed entertainment by the Baby Boomer Party Band.

They were fitting celebrations for the centenarian, who loves spending time with her family.

“She would go anywhere and anytime to be with them but has had to slow down in the last year,” Mrs Ramsay said.

Mrs Chamberlain has four children, 13 grandchildren, 17 great great grandchildren and one great, great, great grandchild.

She was born at Lake Cargelligo, NSW, and is the last of eight children. She lived in Sydney before marrying and moving to Perth where all her children were born. In 1962 she moved to Queensland, lived at Aspley and moved to Peninsula Park 20 years ago.

“Mum’s earliest special memory was seeing a ‘flying machine’ coming to Lake Cargelligo, landing in a paddock and giving joy rides to those who could afford it,” Mrs Ramsay said.

Another vivid memory is celebrating the end of WWII and dancing in the streets of Sydney.

“She also loved to travel and one of her earlier trips was to China with her sister in 1978, which was just after they opened up the country,” Mrs Ramsay said.

“Another highlight was bush walking to the tip of Cape York Peninsula at 90 with family. Returning people were yelling out to others ‘you can do it, we have just passed a 90 year old who made it’.”

Just wanted to say a big thank you to the people at the Coast Guard who not only risk their lives to save others, but also undertake a wonderful service in scattering ashes of loved ones.

My husband Daniel passed away in September and it was his wish to be scattered in Bramble Bay, where he had lived overlooking since retiring to the peninsula.

The co-ordinator Bart organised it all online. On the day, Coxswain Tony and his crew sailed myself and six of the family to the place opposite our apartment where a beautiful prayer was said whilst scattering Daniel’s ashes.

The boat then did a circle three times around the spot.

When we returned to Scarborough, we were given a laminated certificate acknowledging the scattering and the exact position where it took place.

It was a very moving time and one which brought closure to myself and my family.

60 years of sparkle and love STORY JODIE POWELL NEVILLE Dacey’s grandfather thought Margaret Palmer looked like a “nice girl” and Margaret thought Neville looked like a gentleman when they met at a dance at Gaythorne.

He was there with his grandfather, who was one of the organisers, while the then Miss Palmer was there on the spur of the moment with friends after a last-minute invitation.

More than 60 years later, it’s clear that they were meant to be together as they share stories and recall the evening they met.

“We were out playing tennis and my friend said ‘does anyone want to come to the dance?’,” Mrs Dacey recalled.

“He (Mr Dacey) saw we girls talking and I looked at him and thought ‘he’s a gentleman’,” she laughed.

Her brother was a developer and offered to build the couple a home at Enoggera. They couldn’t move in until they were married, but with Mrs

Dacey having just turned 20, her father declared she was too young to wed.

“But then some boys threw rocks through the window because no-one was living there,” Mr Dacey recalled.

Again, they approached Mrs Dacey’s father, explaining that one of the rocks, which smashed the loungeroom window, had come

perilously close to damaging the new stove as well.

“Daddy said ‘alright, she can get married younger’,” Mrs Dacey said, smiling at the recollection.

The Daceys were married at the Presbyterian Church at Stafford on December 26, 1960.

Together they raised two sons, Scott and Andrew, and have 12 grandchildren.

PARENT TV will soon be working on a project to translate its content into five languages, opening up global markets and enhancing its offering to the Australian market – just two years on from being named the Moreton Bay Region’s best startup.

The business, which is the brainchild of Clontarf mum Samantha Jockel, won the Innovate Moreton Bay most successful startup category at the 2018 Moreton Bay Region Business and Innovation Awards.

It’s been a big year for Parent TV, despite a global pandemic.

Parent TV is an online streaming service which provides access to expert parenting advice on a range of topics covering children of all ages.

Ms Jockel said the COVID-19 shutdown didn’t adversely affect her business, in fact she picked up a couple of big clients such as the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and PWC which used Parent

The business was among 40 winners from 26 countries, chosen from almost 350 entries from 180+ countries.

a project which will translate Parent TV’s top 100 videos into five languages – Mandarin, Hindi, Cantonese, Arabic and Spanish.

She anticipates the project, which was due to kick off at the start of 2021, will take 18 months to two years and her website will be one of the first in world to do it.

The idea was born out of conversations with early learning centres, with many saying parents from non-English speaking backgrounds were grappling with the same issues and would benefit from access to the material on the website. The project came about after the team translated one course into Mandarin to see how it would go.

Ms Jockel said it was not just a matter of adding subtitles – the content will be properly translated and culturally-appropriate.

It will cater to parents in Australia from non-English speaking backgrounds, but will also take the content to a global market.

In response to demand for content, the team produced about 40 videos, answering children’s and parents’ questions about social distancing, restrictions and learning at home.

“We turned that around very quickly,” she said.

And about six months ago, Parent TV signed with G8 Education, which has 475 childcare centres in Australia and 30,000 parents.

In December, Ms Jockel found out she had secured $400,000 in funding from round one of the Federal Government’s Boosting Female Founders Initiative.

Customer focus sparks innovation STORY JODIE POWELL THE adaptability that saw North Lakes-based Metromatics win the Innovation Excellence category of the 2019 Moreton Bay Region Business Excellence and Innovation Awards has driven the business to new heights.

Metromatics technical sales and engineering manager Mitch Callon said keeping an open mind was a mindset that held the company in good stead.

When it became apparent more than a decade ago that Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) the technology used in traditional computer monitors

and televisions - was becoming obsolete, Metromatics was ahead of the curve, embracing LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technology to develop state-of-the art information screens.

Mr Callon said the screens, which withstand the elements, were used across public transport networks nationally and had evolved over the years, with Metromatics supplying not only screens but also software.

One of the biggest advances, Mr Callon said, was the development of digital signs that broadcast information or announcements - a breakthrough for people

with vision or hearing impairments.

“Traditionally at train stations there is a hearing loop in the ground, and you have to stand within the loop (to be able to hear announcements),” Mr Callon said.

If people with cochlear implants step away from the loop, they lose the ability to hear the information.

But Metrospec display screens with built-in hearing loop capability mean they can read information such as timetables on a screen, without missing announcements.

“We have had fantastic feedback from Cicada

(Cochlear Implant Club and Advisory Association Queensland) and The Deaf Society,” Mr Callon said.

“We’re looking at extending it to tourist information, public events and galleries.”

Metromatics general manager Grant Williams said the company worked with clients to identify needs and develop systems to match.

“We work with the customer because often they don’t know what they want because they don’t know what technology is out there,” he said. “The biggest thing is education - you’re teaching them about technology and Metromatics general manager Grant Williams said the company focused on delivering solutions for clients. choice.”

A NEW North Lakes business is creating a one-stop shop for natural healing and therapies.

The brainchild of homeopath, nutritionist, craniosacral therapist and Reiki master Sarah Kottmann, Soul Spectrum brings together practitioners focussed on wellness and wellbeing.

Soul Spectrum builds on the success of Ms Kottmann’s original business, North Lakes Homeopathy, which she launched almost a decade ago with the goal of making a difference.

Ms Kottmann, who was a runner-up in several categories of last year’s AusMumpreneur Awards, was introduced to homeopathy as a child by her mother after suffering excruciating eczema as a baby.

“Mum used to use homeopathy on us as kids and because it worked, she kept using it,” Ms Kottmann said.

It’s a tradition Ms Kottmann has continued, and she said creating a space that was home to a range of therapists allowed them to work together for optimal results.

“I wanted to really create a place that was supportive of practitioners to support their business and grow and also for patients, for cross referrals,” she said.

STORY JODIE POWELL NADINE Sawyer describes her journey to becoming a professional artist as somewhat accidental – but her acclaim in the field has been anything but.

Sawyer, who won the Local Artist category of the Moreton Bay Region Art Awards, said her success was many years in the making.

She had completed a Certificate of Introductory Art and Design at the Queensland College of Art before moving south and finding work with a florist.

I was really experimental “When I left art school I worked at a beautiful florist in Melbourne, where I learnt about flowers and colour,” Sawyer said.

“It was a great way to learn about the world, but I realised I didn’t want to do that, I needed more.

“I fell into art school at RMIT and got into the painting department − I was so interested

in all kinds of art.”

Sawyer went on to study a Bachelor of Arts (Painting) at Monash University, graduating with honours before completing her Masters, but turned down the opportunity of completing a PhD in favour of travel.

She has exhibited in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, the USA, Japan and South Korea and her work hangs in collections around the world.

“I had a lot of anxiety and depression and I think painting has helped me through that,” she said.

Sawyer creates in a variety of styles, ranging from abstract to figurative, with her trademark angel featuring in many of her works.

“I was really experimental and angels have been one of the symbols I paint that come through.

“At first, they were naïve, a bit dark – some of the angels had crutches and wings pinned on.”

She described her 2018 winning piece, Inspiration Machine, as being “light, poetic and joyous and forges into landscapes of boundless creativity” and is

proud that Moreton B a y Regional C o u n c i l purchased some of her work for its collection.

“I see all parts of life connecting poetically and the most eloquent way for me to express my insights is through paint.”

$10,000 PRIZE POOL FOR LOCAL ARTISTS The new 2021 Moreton Bay Region Art Prize is open only to residents.

Building on the strong foundation and legacy of the Moreton Bay Region Art Awards, Mayor Peter Flannery said the new focus of the art prize would support and celebrate local artists.

“In previous years, artists from across the country could enter the art awards, now the new art prize is open only to Moreton Bay residents,” Mayor Flannery said.

“We made this change to better support and celebrate local artists who have endured a challenging year with COVID-19."

The total prize pool for the new awards is $10,000, with finalists having their art shown at the new Pine Rivers Art Gallery in March.

“The opening of the new art gallery in itself will be exciting for the local creative community, and a fantastic space to connect with the breadth of talent we have in Moreton Bay,” Mayor Flannery said.

Entry to the Art Prize is FREE, with applications closing on February 26.

Who’d have thought brownies could be considered healthy?

The secret … using sweet potatoes, a superfood, which gives the brownies flavour and a great fudge texture.

Preheat oven to 180˚C and line a 20cm x 20cm pan with baking paper. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, add sweet potato puree, maple syrup, almond butter, vanilla extract and butter and stir to combine.

Add cocoa powder, sea salt and baking powder and stir to combine. Then add flour and stir well.

Next, fold in the raspberries and half of the pecans.

Transfer batter to the pre-prepared baking tin and spread evenly using a spoon or rubber spatula. Top with remaining pecans.

Bake for 28-32 minutes. The brownie edges should appear slightly dry and a toothpick should come out mostly clean when inserted and removed from the centre.

Remove from the oven and let the brownies cool in the pan for 30 minutes to one hour before slicing and serving.

GARDENS have become a hive of activity for a growing number beekeepers in the past year and expert Scott Bevis says conditions are perfect to give it a go at home.

The owner of Bee Australian at Rothwell has been keeping bees for about six years and loves the science of it, the art of beekeeping and producing his own honey.

There are a couple of things he wishes he knew when he was starting out, and has offered a few tips for residents wanting to keep bees at home.

beeaustralian.com.au The first step is to check with Council to see if you are permitted to have bee hives on your property. Visit moretonbay. qld.gov.au for information.

Then, you need to have your property assessed by a beekeeper who will determine if your yard and surrounds are suitable.

If the council and beekeeper give your property the green light, you then have to register with Biosecurity Queensland. If you are keeping native bees, it is not a requirement.

Mr Bevis recommends connecting with a beekeeping store that can supply the goods and bees, and give you advice about honey bees.

“It’s not a set-and-forget. You do need to maintain them, so there are periodic hive inspections and splitting the hive occasionally − which is naturally what they do in the wild − and also taking some honey off them,” he said.

“If you leave too much there and they get too full, which is called honey-bound, then they can just pack up and leave because there’s no room left. It’s finding the nice balance of enough maintenance and too much maintenance just to keep them happy.”

He recommends connecting with a beekeeping association to source bees and work with a mentor who can share hands-on experience, which is essential.

Keep them happy “For people who don’t want to keep honey bees, but they want them in the area, planting beefriendly flowers and plants is an important thing. The bees need food all-year round even though they do slow up in winter,” he said.

A basic beekeeping kit will set

you back about $450-$500, which includes the hive and components, protective equipment, basic hand tools, smoker and package of bees.

So, what’s the tip he wishes he knew six years ago, when he was starting out?

“Maintenance of the hive. I thought it was a little bit less work involved. I wasn’t inspecting the hives enough, so I had a couple fail. Also, seasonal timing. It’s not a good idea to acquire a hive in winter because that’s when they’re at their slowest – they’re basically in hibernation.”

The ideal time is coming into spring when everything is starting to warm up and flower.

Hooked On Fishing and Boating Bounty lures anglers to our bay STORY KYLIE KNIGHT DAVID Bateman says fishing is a pastime not hindered by COVID-19 restrictions, with plenty of space on waterways and the foreshore to safely adhere to social distancing.

Most anglers prefer plenty of space, with or without a pandemic, to avoid line entanglement and fighting for the same fish.

Mr Bateman said more people turned to fishing and headed out on their boats, when they were unable to enjoy other activities.

But don’t worry, there’s enough for everyone.

Mr Bateman said at present there were plenty of sandcrabs in Deception Bay as well as winter whiting in Moreton Bay and summer whiting at Bribie Island, and bream off the foreshore.

Anglers just need to know where the fish are and when they are biting.

He does, as the deputy chairman and secretary of recreational fishing group Sunfish Queensland and author of a guide to coastal fishing from the Tweed River to Cairns.

• Try not to buy cheap gear.

• You don’t need a big tackle box, just the right gear. David uses a small pill box containing just hooks and sinkers.

• Look after fish when you catch them. Always have an icebox with ice slurry.

• Take all rubbish home with you (don’t discard anything like plastic bags or line).

• Put undersized fish back in the water.

• Put discarded bait in the water.

He has been fishing since he was about two and started with his parents on their boat around the islands on Moreton Bay. He joined a club when he was about 17 because he wanted to learn to fish properly. It is a move he recommends to others.

Mr Bateman said Moreton Bay offered options for everyone, with land-based and boat fishing and even surf fishing from Moreton Island.

Mr Bateman mostly fishes in Moreton Bay but he also likes the southern end of Bribie Island, the Red Beach area, for southern whiting which run in September, October, November, December and January. Rock worms are his preferred bait for whiting.

He goes fishing two or three times a week, depending on the weather, keeping friends and neighbours supplied with tasty, fresh fish.

“It’s a good, clean, healthy sport and activity and it provides a nice meal,” he said.

“There’s nothing like a nice piece of whiting or flathead.

They’re easy to catch and there’s plenty of them.”

THE humble swallowtail dart is one of the mainstays for beach anglers in South East Queensland with the surf beach of Moreton Island and the northern beach between Combuyuro Point and North Point being great places to catch them.

They are a fantastic sportfish on light gear and good on the table when filleted and skinned. They are fantastic smoked.

The common dart that is caught is the swallowtail dart (Trachinotus coppingeri) however the species typically found further north, the black spotted dart (Trachinotus baillioni), does straggle down as far as the Gold Coast. It is easily recognisable because instead of the series of five to eight relatively large green spots, there are only two or three small black spots.

A long time ago, I was privileged enough to do my PhD studies on the species.

They are a schooling fish and schools can consist of a few dozen fish, or many thousands.

Small dart do not move around much, the little ones are scattered throughout the surf and semi-surf zones of the entire South East Queensland region and well into northern NSW. Larger, mature fish do move around and I recorded movements from tag returns of up to 275km. Fish certainly move between the offshore islands and one adventurous tagged fish swam from Fraser Island to North Stradbroke Island. Generally, dart do not migrate as such which explains why there is not a specific dart season in South East Queensland. In saying this, larger, mature fish do use the semi-surf locations more during the warmer months.

The reproductive period is from October to April with a peak in the summer months, which coincides with the time when larger fish use the semisurf beaches more. They reach maturity about 35-36cm.

The feeding ecology of swallowtail dart is opportunistic.

They eat what they can find in the surf zone and do not overly discriminate. It makes sense.

They can’t sit around and think about whether they are going to eat something or not. When the winds are from the west after rain, they eat insects (such as flying ants).

Other times, they eat a tiny planktonic copepod that is about the size of a pinhead. These get concentrated by water movement and dart gobble a lot of them at once. At night they often eat some planktonic animals that glow in the dark. This was an important finding because it means that the addition of a small soft green bead directly above the hook can greatly increase catch. They will also eat baitfish (frogmouth pilchards) at times. On the northern beaches of Moreton Island, it is a very different story. In the area around Yellowpatch, they mostly eat whole small pippies about the size of a finger-nail. They push up with the incoming tide across the shallow banks there to get them.

There are two approaches for finding them in the surf zone during the day. You can find a good surf formation, or you simply learn how to see them in the waves when the conditions are right. Dart are distinctive in the waves, they are rarely in very tight schools, but you look for a small number of fish that are high up in the breaking wave and are roughly equidistant apart.

Ignore the shore break because that is where the small ones are.

DR DAZZA often find that the first few fish glimpsed are part of a much larger and dispersed school.

If you get good at it, you can even start to pick out schools of much larger fish to target rather than the run-of-the-mill fish.

Even if you haven’t learnt to spot them, or conditions are not optimal to do so even for a trained eye, you can still just find the right formations for them. A lot of inexperienced surf fishermen in the surf simply find the deepest and widest gutter they can. This is generally not the optimal habitat for dart. I prefer a gutter where, with effort, you can lob your bait in the vicinity of the outer bank, or even on to it. This is the area where dart are frequently hanging around. You should also look for gutters that are likely to be suitable for high and low tide.

Also, at and around low tide, it often pays to find a location where you can (safely) get out towards the outer bank, with the best locations being a spit between two gutters.

In very calm conditions, I prefer to target outer banks rather than the gutters themselves. At night, dart can come into the corners of very shallow gutters, so it pays to alter your casting distance to find them then.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT JUSTIN Hodges has experienced the highs and lows of rugby league at the highest level. He’s hoping the lessons he’s learnt will help rising stars at the Dolphins develop as players and young men.

The former Broncos, Roosters, Maroons and Australia player has joined the Dolphins’ coaching team as assistant along with former NRL, Blues and Australia player Scott Hill.

Hodges joined the coaching team in October, after chatting with former Maroons teammate and Dolphins head coach Adam Mogg.

“I was doing the Queensland 20s and had

done Queensland assistant coaching with Kevvie (Walters) and just wanted to do some full-time coaching and get in the weekto-week stuff and learn,” Hodges explained.

“I thought what a great place to learn out at Redcliffe. They’ve got a proud history – I played against them when I was with the (Toowoomba) Clydesdales.

I played Origin with Moggy and it made it that little bit easier just knowing he’s a good coach, it’s a great club and what a good time to be part of something special.

And they’ve got a bid for the NRL as well.”

Hodges said he, Mogg and Hill had a great deal of experience he hoped the play-

ers would tap into.

“We’re just trying to help these young men grow and reach their potential.

If there’s any way we can help them in terms of developing their game but also taking a look at the angles they’re not so good at, whether that’s defence or attack or talk or fitness … Just encouraging them to try to get the best out of themselves,” he said.

His focus will be on working with players in the “back five”, but he is happy to do whatever he can to help the entire squad.

Hodges, of Albany Creek, will juggle his coaching gig with his full-time role with the Beyond the Broncos program, which mentors

Indigenous students in more than 50 schools.

“That’s something I’m big on, passing the message through and trying to help those kids as well to reach their potential, to inspire and to be whatever they want to be. It comes hand-in-hand with the work that we do at school and the knowledge I’ve gained through footy and now I’m trying to pass it on to these young men (at the Dolphins),” he said.

And those young Dolphins players have already made a good impression on their new assistant coach.

“The boys have really responded and whatever advice you give, they take it on board and really try to make themselves better,”

SCOTT Hill has played rugby league with some of the game’s greatest players and coaches, so exploring the techniques behind their success came naturally.

The former Melbourne Storm, Hunter Mariners, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, London Harlequins, New South Wales and Australia player has co-written three books with elite sports physiotherapist David Becker.

They’ve revealed the secrets of winning coaches, inspirational captains and CEOs. They interviewed 12 elite coaches including Lawrie Lawrence, Wayne Bennett, Chris Anderson, Frank Farina and Geoff Marsh.

What he learnt can be applied to sports, business and life, and will help him in his new role as assistant coach at the Dolphins.

He said he was fortunate to have played within the Melbourne Storm system and to have been part of the development of that club.

“I’ve expanded that knowledge and have been able to use it in the coaching I do now,” Hill said.

“It’s something I’m really passionate about, coaching. I’m keen to work in junior development and would love to start a Coach the Coaches program.

Hodges said.

“I think they’re a special bunch. We’ve got that connection now with the Warriors as well, so getting those players back and putting them into the fold with this group of players … we’re going to be a very healthy club.”

Is this a one-season deal?

“Hopefully longer. It will obviously depend on how we go and what Moggy wants.

Details of six rounds have been announced, although it is still subject to change due to the changing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic.

tion, Round 1 will be at Phillip Island, Victoria next month. The dates are to be confirmed.

Round 2 will be at Sydney Motorsport on May 1-2, Round 3 at Morgan Park, near Warwick on June 2527 and Round 4 at Sandown Raceway, Melbourne, on September 10-12.

Round 5 is at Tailem Bend, South Australia, on October 15-17 and the final round at Mt Panorama,

Bathurst, on dates to be confirmed.

Suhle got a taste for the Bathurst ‘mountain’ circuit last month and finished 2020 on a high note winning his class at Sandown during the Shannons Motorsport Au s t r a l i a n Festival.

During the holidays, the 18 year old has been

working on the gearbox and engine of his Porsche GT3, as well as doing testing.

“We’ll be all ready to go,” he said. “we did a

gearbox and engine rebuild at the end of the year and just need couple weeks’ notice (to race).”

REDCLIFFE AFL Tigers have several new teams planned for 2021, including Under 9, Under 11 and Under 13 girls.

The club has its sign-on from 9-11am on Saturday February 13 at Nathan Rd, Kippa-Ring, with registrations open for new and returning players, as well as Auskick.

‘Amazing’, says coach STORY NICK CROCKFORD HEAD coach Wanda Drew praised the “amazing effort by everyone” from Redcliffe Leagues Swimming Club (RLSC) at the Queensland Championships.

RLSC had five swimmers qualify and compete in 16 events – an achievement not matched since 2016 under coach Ken Wood, who passed away in 2018.

This was despite the squad leaving Redcliffe War Memorial Pool in March due to re-tiling work, having to find alternative pools for training and the impact of COVID-19.

Rylee Smith, who turned 12 (the minimum age) just six weeks before the titles, made four finals and clocked personal bests (pb) in all six events.

Her best was fifth in the 400m freestyle final, in only the second time she had competed in the event and sixth in the 100m backstroke final.

Zaine Vardon, whose build-up was hindered by six months out of the water after an operation, swam four events, making finals and the state’s top 10 in 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke.

He had pbs in both and a best of ninth in freestyle.

Zaine was also first-reserve for the 100m butterfly final, which he reached with another pb.

Daniel Baker also made Queensland’s top 10 in the 100m freestyle with a pb and clocked another best time in the 50m freestyle.

GRACE Swimming Club, which is based at Rothwell, will have 52 swimmers at the Vorgee Brisbane Sprint Championships being held iat Chandler on Saturday and Sunday (January 30 and 31).

It will be the swimmers’ first major event of the new year.

Then, it will be the 2021 RMHC Queensland Sprint Championships, being held at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, on the weekend of February 13 and 14.

Club is ‘bailed’ out of problem by woodcrafters CABOOLTURE Sports cricket has been ‘bailed out’ of a growing problem by local woodcrafters.

Every week bails used by Caboolture Sports Cricket Club were breaking “as soon as the ball hit them,” President Steve Adams said.

“They’re made of pine and can’t seem to take the

impact. I reckon we’d go through a pair every innings. They cost about $8.

It was ridiculous.”

Adams asked Tony Clarke, the Sport and Community Manager at Caboolture Sports Club (CSC), if he knew of any woodturning groups. He did, Caboolture Woodcrafters, which the

CSC Community Chest has supported for years.

“Brian (Bisset, woodcrafters’ vice president) came down, took a sample and came back with the finished product,” Adams said.

Doug Pearce, President of Caboolture Woodcrafters, said: “We couldn’t see

a problem. We picked tallowwood from up around D’Aguilar and Woodford.

It’s nice and strong and the natural colour we wanted.”

Caboolture Cricket Club was delighted with the home-grown solution and has secured a batch of 60. “We’ve tried them in four matches and not one

break,” Adams said.

The woodcrafters may now turn their attention to cricket stumps, which can cost around $90 a set, which they may make from blackbutt wood.

“It might be an opportunity for them. Lots of clubs are suffering the same problem,” Adams said.

Festival’s waiting game STORY NICK CROCKFORD PENINSULA Power is this week waiting for the green light to host the Australian Indigenous Football Festival at AJ Kelly Park.

Club President Craig Feuerriegel said travel for participants in New South Wales had been complicated by COVID. Organisers are monitoring government rules and regulations ahead of the festival on February 27.

“At this stage it is going ahead,” Feuerriegal said.

About 2000 spectators are expected to see Power’s Masters face NSW South Coast Jummalungs (3pm), Power’s Women play the Australian Indigenous Koalas (5pm) and Power’s men take on the Australian Indigenousroos (7pm).

Power are also preparing for a pre-season tournament against Gold Coast Knights, Wynnum Wolves and Brisbane Roar which

will see all club sides, from SAP to seniors, in action.

A host of last season’s NPL Premiership-winning squad have also re-signed including Sam Cronin, David Cunha, Josh Wooley, Brenton Fox, Lewis Greenwood, Luke Plummer, Hayden McHenery, Andy Pengelly and Sam Roper.

They have been joined by former Brisbane Strikers defender Michael McGowan and captain Jake McLean, forward Zander

Hat-trick helps club end five-year wait STORY NICK CROCKFORD REDCLIFFE Little Athletics Club heads to this weekend’s Met North Regional Championships at Windsor buoyed by their medal haul at the Queensland State Relays last month.

Athletes from the peninsula club brought home three titles from the Relays − their best return for a number of years.

They were, in fact, Redcliffe’s first state relay crowns since 2015 and before that 2013. On each occasion, it was one title – not three.

Redcliffe’s Under 13 Boys’ team of Angus, Brian, Daniel and Zobair won the 4x100m relay and also the 4xMedley event by a blistering 10 seconds, just shy of the record.

Brian and Zobair ran the 200m, Angus the 400m and Daniel the 800m starting from third but surging through to first and stretching the lead to 10 seconds.

The Under 13 Girls’ team of Charlotte, Jordanna, Skye and Taisha also won completing a 4x100m relay double for the club.

Redcliffe’s last state champions at the State Relays were in 2015 when Fletcher and Lily won the Under 16 Girls’ long jump relay breaking the state record and in 2013 when the club’s Under 17 Boys won the 4x100m and also broke the state record.

NATE Wood is only eight and faces more challenges than most his age – but on the speedway go-kart track he is a natural, having never finished outside the top three.

It is a remarkable record for the youngster from Woody Point who has never been coached how to drive, according to his father Ben. Not only is Nate one of the youngest in most races, he also suffers from Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and has development difficulties.

We have made life-long friendships “I am surprised at how he’s taken to go-karts,” Ben said, “he listens to ‘go’ and ‘stop’ but never had any coaching.

“No-one tells him how to race and I want to keep it that way. Nate is the only one who leaves his racing suit and helmet on all day because he loves it.”

Nate had his sights on the Victorian, South Australian and Australian championships last year, but COVID-19 forced the cancellation of all three.

“His dreams were shattered as all racing ceased for six months,” Ben said, “so now we are back to where we started.”

In the youngster’s sights are the national titles in Tamworth on April 2325 (accommodation already booked) and the Queensland titles at Cairns

The Southern Cross Catholic College student is currently ranked second in his division of speedway gokarts in Queensland. His aim is to become number one.

That would be quite an achievement for the family, in which two of Nate’s siblings also suffer disorders.

“We do everything ourselves. The mechanics, everything,” Ben said, “if we can’t afford something, we don’t do it.”

Nate’s career started aged five in Junior Quarter Midgets. After 18 months he won the club championship and made the switch to SKAA Sub Junior Speedway Karts.

In just a year − racing at times against 12-year-olds − he has always finished in the top three and often hits speeds of 80km/h.

He has now won more 60

Speedway go-kart trophies and his next step would be up into Junior Sedans for those aged 10-17.

“The more seat time you get, the better you get,” Ben said. “Nate likes to see what he can achieve. He wants to go fast but can work his way up and down a field.

“I hope Nate will go as far as he can in the sport. He has made really good mates from all over Queensland.

“Racing for us has proved to be like another family.

We have made life-long friendships, everyone is there to support and help one another.

“We race as a team with father, son and often mum

(Kelly) joining the action.”

Nate’s other love is rugby league. He plays for Redcliffe Dolphins juniors and Ben says “often takes down 90kg opponents”.

Nate and his family are looking for sponsorship to help him with racing gear and getting to the titles.

They are grateful for the tools received from Trade Tools and Repco which will be a big help during his racing schedule.

The Lakes’ President Clint Castle believes the merger makes “complete sense”.

“We are very excited to enter into this agreement with the North Lakes Mustangs,” he said.

The Mustangs started in 2006, and after a long history in church football, joined the Football Brisbane ranks in 2019.

Mustangs picked up its first Football Brisbane premiership in 2020 thanks to its Under 12 Division 1 team. Mustangs’ senior men’s team is in Capital League 3 this season.

REDCLIFFE Leagues Netball Association (RLNA) is ready to launch a new season with bold plans on and off the courts.

The RLNA representative season for Under 12-15s starts on Monday (February 1), trials for the Queensland Premier League (QPL) begin on Tuesday and the 2021 sign-on is February 13.

Last year, RLNA’s canteen at KR Benson Park, off Maine Rd, was fully refurbished. In September, this year, work will start on disabled access for the amenities block and car park.

“We would love to have the courts redone, they are

in desperate need,” RNLA President Kristy Page said, “but it’s $900,000 and will need Federal and State funding.”

RLNA will also be expanding its Wednesday night social competitions this

season after 30 teams, the highest number yet, entered its hugely successful twilight tournament which ran from October last year.

The new summer competition will begin on February 24 and run for six weeks and be followed by a winter social competition and then twilight in the spring.

The RLNA’s regular season will run Netball Queensland’s NetSetGO (Net for ages 5-6, Set for those 7-8, GO for ages 9-10), then further teams up to the age of 16.

RLNA Competition Director Bianca Webb said player numbers “held up well” last year after the initial impact of COVID-19 last year.

“Now we’re hoping to attract a few more young players (to NetSetGO),” she said. “come along to meet new kids, make friends and meet other families, then go on to the next program after that.”

The Lakes FC was founded in 2010 and has had great success through its senior programs, winning the Brisbane Women’s Premier League in 2019, and back-to-back promotions for the men’s team, which will play in the Brisbane Premier League in 2021.

It was also where Indiah-Paige Riley started her career before joining Moreton Bay United, Brisbane Roar and now Fortuna Hjorring, which is currently third in the Danish Elitedivisionen Women.

Peninsula pair help end 23-year shield drought STORY NICK CROCKFORD PENINSULA batsmen Hayden Marks and Pat Moulton were part of the Warehouse Cricket representative team which lifted the Webb Shield for the first time in 23 years.

Marks scored a steady 27 in 20 overs at the top of the innings against Ipswich and fell trying to accelerate the

scoring, earlier this month.

Moulton, in the middle order, added 22 in a fourth-wicket stand of 29 in 27 balls before departing.

Warehouse eventually posted 212 at Marchant Park.

Though the total was considered modest by some, Warehouse bowled well and fielded superbly with Marks and Moulton to the fore.

Ipswich lost their fifth wicket at 161 and started

slipping behind the required run rate before losing three quick wickets.

It ensured the Webb Shield returned to Warehouse for the first time since 1997-98, regardless of the outcome in the final round on February 7.

Peninsula’s ambitions in Warehouse A1 this season took a knock when they lost on first innings to second-placed Mater Hill.

Chasing Mater Hill’s 192, in which Joel Kelly took 4-25, Peninsula were dismissed for 172-3 in 58.3 overs to give the visitors victory on first innings.

Nicholas Boller led the way for Peninsula with a patient 62 in 150 minutes with four boundaries and two sixes.

In Mater Hill’s second innings of 78-3 from 23 overs, Bailey Westman-Carter took

2-11 in five overs and took a catch for the third wicket.

Peninsula, who slipped from third to fifth, start a two-day game against Gold Crest Cobras on Saturday at Filmer Park.

It followed victory on first innings over Northern Suburbs who posted 6-141 in 40 overs, Jason Smith took 3-29 and then top scored with 40 as Peninsula raced to 2-142 in 24 overs.

Polo Bears bag bronze STORY NICK CROCKFORD NORTH Brisbane Polo Bears, with a host of players at Redcliffe Peninsula schools, have struck bronze at the Water Polo Queensland State Titles, from January 19-25.

Tiana Doyle and Abbie Mcdonald, from Grace Lutheran College and Phoebe Dobson, of Mueller College, were part of the Polo Bears Under 16 Girls’ team which finished third.

It was one of the highlights entering the final day of competition with four more Polo Bears teams chasing medals at the six-day event.

The Under 14 Boys’ team was guaranteed at least silver medals having played their way into the gold-medal match.

Bears’ Open Women, including Jaden Weir from Redcliffe State High School, was chasing bronze as were the Under 14 Girls Maroon and White teams.

Earlier in the championships Bears’ Under 16 Boys, which included George McLennan, from Grace Lutheran College, finished in the top five of their section.

The club’s Under 12 Boys went one better finishing fourth at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.

Before the last-day finals, it was shaping as one of the most successful state titles for the Bears, which draw players from the Sunshine Coast, Caboolture, Morayfield, Redcliffe, Albany Creek, Sandgate and Brighton.

FIVE Redcliffe Padres’ players were in the Brisbane Bandits team which won a nail-biter 6-5 in the Australian Baseball League (ABL) at Melbourne Aces on Sunday.

The state titles had 1677 competitors, playing more than 350 matches, with 115 coaches, 50 referees and 2000 spectators expected at the Gold Coast venue.

TWO North Lakes football clubs have signed a Memorandum of Understanding which may see them join forces in two years – and aim for the state league.
