Book a date with click 'n' collect BOOK lovers will be able to stock up on their favourite reading materials and DVDs at their nearest library with Council introducing a click and collect service.

The service is free and allows people to place an order at all 10 of Council’s libraries during opening hours.

Once an order has been placed, library staff will gather the items and deliver them to your car or designated pick-up point in a safe and contactless way.

Mayor Peter Flannery is urging residents to give the service a go.

“We live in an on-demand

SPECIAL FEATURE: SUTTONS BEACH PAVILION GIVING NEXTDAY STEPS IN THE PROCESS In a joint statement, The Suttons Beach Pavilion Preservation Group acknowledged Council did not have a pre-conceived strategy or ill-intent to demolish the buildings but is obligated to respond to the concerns raised in a series of independent structural engineering reports to ensure public safety.

Common ground on landmark site

The two parties both agreed the next steps in the process will be: • Tenant vacates buildings: The buildings will be vacated at the end of the current lease on February 28 to maintain public safety and enable the necessary invasive testing of the structures to be undertaken.

• Invasive testing of the buildings: The invasive testing will confirm the internal structural integrity of the buildings and inform future Council decisions on the fate of the buildings. Council is currently calling for tenders from suitably qualified experts to undertake this invasive testing.

• Deciding the future of the buildings: While independent expert reports commissioned by Council suggest demolition is probable, there still remain three options for the buildings: demolish, partially demolish and partially rectify/ restore, or fully rectify/restore.

The decision on the fate of the buildings will be informed by the invasive testing results, community survey findings and detailed cost analyses to ensure the chosen option represents good value for use of public funds.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT MORETON Bay Regional Council will work with residents to restore or rebuild the landmark Suttons Beach Pavilion, if it is within its budget, after a successful meeting last week and an intensive community campaign.

Representatives from Suttons Beach Pavilion Preservation Group (SBPPG) met with Mayor Peter Flannery and CEO Greg Chemello on February 17 to present their arguments for preserving or rebuilding the structure.

Council is yet to decide

what will replace the building and is consulting the community, but many residents want the building saved or replaced with a replica art deco structure.

President Jodie Starr said it was a constructive meeting.

“Council would like to, moving forward, work with us. It was well received,” she said.

She said an initial proposal to make the area green space with a toilet block, while permanent plans for the site were determined, seemed unlikely to proceed.

“The invasive testing still

needs to be done and the tenant will have to vacate the building on the 28th of February,” she said.

“It’s a great outcome.

We’re all very happy with the outcome,” she said.

The group held a peaceful rally on February 20 (after Moreton Daily News’ deadline) to give residents a chance to show their support and send a strong message to Council.

“We’re still going to campaign and want the community to get behind us, but we want to work with council,” she said.

“We feel quite proud of ourselves that we’ve come

so far in two weeks. It’s been an outstanding effort by everyone in the community and the committee.”

The meeting followed impassioned pleas by Karen Whittam and Shane Murphy during Moreton Bay Regional Council’s general meeting at Caboolture on February 16.

Mayor Peter Flannery and Deputy Mayor Jodie Shipway praised the group for their constructive community campaign.

“It was important to acknowledge the handling of communications around the condition of the buildings has been poor, and I

have apologised for that,” Mayor Flannery said.

“While we were caught on the back foot, we have been working double speed to make all the engineering reports public and get community engagement underway.

“This is critical so that not only are locals armed with all the relevant data to make an informed decision, but also to ensure that whatever happens with this site it reflects the community’s views and values.

“Obviously, we don’t have all the answers yet which is why we will be undertaking the invasive testing.”

PUBLIC consultation on the future of the Suttons Beach Pavilion site is open until March 11, with Moreton Bay Regional Council conducting an online survey.

The survey is also available in paper form at Redcliffe Library and Council’s Redcliffe Administration Centre.

Many members of the Suttons Beach Pavilion Preservation Group and residents in the community are not happy with the way some questions have been framed in the survey.

Some say they are ‘biased or loaded’ and do not give them the options they want

to express their viewpoint.

“Many are choosing the ‘other’ option and writing their own answers. We want people to fill it out. We would have rathered the questions not be as targeted to one side of the story,” the group president Jodie Starr said last week.

When asked about the response council has had to the survey, a Council spokesman said: “community engagement is currently underway, with the results to be prepared and reported back to the community in early April”.

Council said it would not

provide figures on how many people had completed the survey so far and did not respond to criticism of the way questions had been worded.

Action needed now to save koalas STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH URBAN koalas will disappear from neighbourhoods across the Moreton Bay Region in our lifetime, according to one local animal rescuer.

With the koala population in decline, and their ‘vulnerable’ status upgraded to ‘endangered’, Jason Cobb from Pine Rivers Koala Care said he was devastated to see one of the country’s iconic species disappear.

“I’ve been an animal rescuer for a very long time, and I knew this was going to happen,” he said.

“You just don’t see the high number of koala sightings that you did years ago, and we have done that because we all built here and took away their homes.

“Moreton Bay once posted the biggest population of koalas in South East Queensland. There was a time back in the late 1990s and early 2000s that you would see up to 600 koalas a month.

“Today, you would be lucky to see 50 in a month, and that’s koalas without tracking devices.

“We don’t know when the urban koalas will disappear, but they will in our lifetime.”

Koalas are now facing extinction along the east coast of Australia in Queensland, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

A CSIRO report says there are about 180,000 koalas left along the east coast.

In addition to land development, the prolonged drought and the Black Summer Bushfires have contributed to the decline in numbers.

It is estimated nearly onethird of the east coast population was lost in the three years from 2018 to 2021.

Mr Cobb said it was more important than ever for the community to come together to protect and rejuvenate wildlife corridors.

“Now is the time for the community to band togeth-

er and do everything we can to protect the koala population by doing large scale tree planting drives in areas that we have already lost, or about to lose,” he said.

“It’s important these areas are all linked together, so the koalas can move freely and have access to food and shade.

“I know where there are areas where we could plant thousands of trees, but we just need help and support from the community to do it.

Whirlwind family reunion STORY NICK CROCKFORD SITTING on a Redcliffe apartment balcony, overlooking Moreton Bay last week, Jaclyn Narracott was a world away from the Winter Olympic Games.

But, the 31-year-old still wore her historic silver medal and was watching live coverage from Beijing, cheering on friends and teammates.

Days after winning Australia’s first medal in the skelelton – lying face down on a sled with no brakes reaching 130km/h on a banked, ice track – Narracott was in demand.

It has been a whirlwind of TV, radio, online and print media interviews, shows and pictures for Narracott and

her parents, Roger and Cheryl, who live on the peninsula.

A Channel 7 camera was in the Narracotts’ apartment during races, trained on her parents, who have also appeared on Sunrise.

Cheryl was filmed having her nails painted Aussie green and the whole family photographed at Brisbane airport when Narracott arrived home for the first time since October 2019.

“My head is still spinning a bit,” Narracott said, “it is taking a while to sink in.

“It’s not finishing second, it’s the race result and what that means. The enormity of it all. It was history in multiple ways.”

Narracott, based in the UK, was the first Austral-

ian to win an Olympic skeleton medal clocking 4 minutes 8.24 seconds over four runs in Beijing where temperatures touched -20 degrees Centigrade.

It was also Australia’s first Olympic medal in a sliding event and took the country’s Winter Olympic medal tally in Beijing to a record four. Winner Hannah Neise (4:07:62) was the first German woman to

win gold in the event and bronze medalist Kimberley Bos (4:8.46) the first Dutch racer to medal in skeleton.

“I knew where I was sitting, but didn’t know the (time) gaps,” Narracott said, though she knew her last run (1:02.11) was “quick”.

“The clock was 100m over the next rise and when I saw the time it was just pure elation. Then reality kicked in and I thought … did I actually do what I think I did? That’s when the tears came into it.

“I saw Kim (Bos) and gave her the biggest hug … and one of my mates from Canada. Without her I would not have survived this season.”

She was also a state-level sprinter starting at Bracken Ridge Little Athletics.

Campaign rallies local business support

MORETON Bay Regional Council is spearheading a sixweek community campaign which encourages locals to eat, drink, shop, play, spend at and back a local business.

The widespread campaign, Back a Local, kicked off on February 16 and follows the recent COVID-19 Omicron wave which has challenged local businesses with staff shortages, supply chain issues and a loss of visitors.

Mayor Peter Flannery has a clear message for Moreton Bay Region residents – next time you pull out your wallet, think local first.

“Here in Moreton Bay, it’s in our DNA to embrace the Aussie way and look out for each other,” Mayor Flannery said.

“We might be the third largest local government in Australia, but our locals unapologetically embrace a sense of community that can rival even the smallest of towns.

“As a local resident myself, I’m pledging to back a local business whenever I can in 2022, and I’m urging the community to join the cause.

He and wife Jo started Dreamtime Kullilla Art in 1996 under an umbrella at a local market, selling ethically sourced authentic Indigenous art to support the creators.

For Mr Connolly, the business is much more than simply selling products – it’s also about educating the community about First Nations culture and traditions and sharing the stories behind each piece.

“We promote our culture and support traditional owners in the area.

Lifestyle, infrastructure lead growth STORY JODIE POWELL AFFORDABILITY, infrastructure, education, employment opportunities and lifestyle are driving property price growth across the Moreton Bay Region according to a leading property researcher.

Hotspotting founder Terry Ryder has been analysing the nation’s property market for more than 40 years and said strong demand for property among home-owners, investors and rentals in the region was a constant.

In a report prepared for Moreton Bay Regional Council, Mr Ryder said that driven by a strong local economy, interest in the region was likely to grow.

“The region receives twice as many tourists as tourism mecca Noosa and the Moreton Bay marine precinct has more tourists than the Great Barrier Reef,” he said.

“I particularly value spending on major new infrastructure as a generator of economic activity and real estate growth.”

“Essentially, real estate markets arise out of conditions in the local economy and Moreton Bay Region

“In terms of factors that generate demand and growth, I highly rate the impact of infrastructure, both existing and future.”

He said the region’s progress so far was delivered through strong population growth, dwelling construction, manufacturing from key industrial areas such as Brendale, Narangba and Clontarf, and investment in transport, health and ed-

ucation infrastructure.

Mr Ryder identified The Mill at Petrie – home to a USC campus – three new satellite hospitals; the Wamuran Irrigation Scheme; the North Harbour Priority Development Area, which will be home to a 400-berth marina; and the Scarborough Harbour Masterplan as further opportunities for the region

in terms of infrastructure, attracting new residents and visitors and providing employment.

“The education and training sector is in the top five industries for both employment and revenue in the Moreton Bay Region,” Mr Ryder said. “It delivered $1.1 billion in economic benefits in 2020 financial year.”

as school year starts THE return to school for 2022 was well and truly a family affair at Grace Lutheran College’s Rothwell campus, with not one, but two sets of twins from the same family walking through the gates.

Robert and Lily McRae embarked on their Year 10 studies, while Lucas and Lachlan joined their older

siblings to start Year 7.

Mum Danuta was not left out, celebrating 20 years since she started as a staff member at the school.

Mrs McRae said Lachlan and Lucas had enjoyed their online start to learning at Grace, but the biggest thrill for her youngest children was taking possession of school laptops.

“I’m excited about all being on campus together with one drop off and pickup,” she said.

“It’s a special year for me too, because it was 20 years ago that I started at Grace.

“I had 10 years off while I was at home with the kids though so I haven’t been teaching at Grace for 20 years!”

DECEPTION Bay’s George Turnbull has been remembered for his service to the community.

Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Sandra Ruck (Div 5) paid tribute to Mr Turnbull at last week’s Council meeting, saying he made an immeasurable contribution to the Deception Bay community.

“He was a loving father and father-in-law to Lorraine, Ron and Carol, Maree and Phillip and proud grandfather and great grandfather to their families,” Cr Ruck said.

Mr Turnbull, who was born on December 29, 1922, died on January 31 aged 99.

“He gave 47 years of service to the community operating the Deception Bay Kiosk on Bayview Tce

A CELEBRATION of Mr Turnbull’s life was held at the Great Northern Garden of Remembrance on February 15. with his late wife Viola,” Cr Ruck said.

“George was also the longest serving member of the Caboolture Freemasons – he was a member for 63 years. He also officiated at the annual CWA meetings for many, many years.”

Cr Ruck said Mr and Mrs Turnbull were third generation residents of the Deception Bay community.

“George and Viola purchased the store from Viola’s father in October, 1957. “The shop was very small and had a small selection of groceries and they admitted having

limited knowledge of shopkeeping.

“But the business grew gradually and they not only extended the business but they started a boat hire business with four dinghies.

“Demand became so much greater with plentiful fish and crabs in the area, so the fleet of four boats grew to 46 rowboats and 10 in-board motors, six with cabins.”

Cr Ruck said Mr Turnbull also collected fees from the council camping grounds across the road from the shop.

“As the Bay grew, they felt the demand was there for a hardware shop, a restaurant and a takeaway shop, so a two-storey building was built on the waterfront and called the Captain Cook Restaurant.”

Call to honour Diggers in bridge name STORY NICK CROCKFORD SUPPORT is growing to officially name one of the biggest and busiest bridges in the Moreton Bay Region.

Naming the Anzac Ave bridge, over the Bruce Highway, was one of the proposals put forward by the Anzac Memorial Avenue Centenary Committee (AMACC).

Many of the AMACC’s projects ahead of the 2015 centenary of the Gallipoli landings were completed, but the committee was dissolved with the bridge unnamed.

However, Bray Park resident Judith Kranen and husband John have revived a plan to gazette the eight-lanes from Kallangur to North Lakes as the Anzac Memorial Avenue Centenary Bridge.

The request is for four illuminated signs, two above north and southbound traffic on the highway, as well as two facing east and west-bound traffic on Anzac Ave. These would match four silhouettes, installed by the AMACC on each corner, representing a WWI Australian soldier, New Zealand soldier, Australian sailor and Australian nurse.

The campaign has support from Defence Minister and Federal Member for Dickson Peter Dutton, State Deputy Premier and Member for Murrumba Steve Miles,

Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth, State Member for Bancroft Chris Whiting and Deputy Mayor and Councillor Jodie Shipway (Div 4).

Mango Hill Progress Association and Pine Rivers Historical Society are also backing the move.

the naming request to his Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Anzac Memorial Avenue – originally known as Brisbane Rd – was built to provide jobs for returned Anzac soldiers and at 17.8km is one of the longest avenues in Queensland.

Memorials, along its length from Petrie to Rothwell, include a replica

of the AE2, a World War I submarine at Ruth Whitfield Park and Navy memorials at Kallangur water tower.

There is also the Light Horse Memorial on the corner of Diamond Jubilee Way, 100 trees to honour 100 fallen servicemen from Pine Rivers and bus stops named after WWI conflicts.

Sign trial puts spotlight on wildlife

New signs have been installed at 12 locations in the region. Matt Cecil from the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland hopes they will inspire motorists to slow down.

A NEW campaign aimed at protecting marsupials from motorists across the Moreton Bay Region rolled out last week.

Launched on Valentine’s Day, the campaign features giant bright yellow corflute cutouts of kangaroos and koalas, strategically placed to alert drivers they are in a wildlife corridor.

Mayor Peter Flannery said that with the traditional koala and kangaroo breeding season drawing to a close, there was an abun-

dance of young animals around the region.

“Our wildlife have been getting all loved up during breeding season, meaning our parks and forests are now teeming with joeys who are making their way out into the world, placing them at risk when it comes to the roadways,” he said The high-visibility corflute signs in the shape of koalas and kangaroos, designed by Council’s Green Infrastructure team, bear simple messages including

“Stay Alert”, “Slow Down” and “Take Care”. The material is like that used for roadwork and building site signs, meaning the signs are reflective when lit by passing headlights at night.

The signs are at 12 sites for the 10-day trial.

Launching the campaign while meeting Baby the squirrel glider and Blossom the ringtail possum at Moore Rd, Kurwongbah, Mayor Flannery said Council received more than 700 calls a year to remove de-

ceased animals from roads.

“We want to help drivers avoid animal collisions, and prevent injuries and fatalities, as well as costly insurance claims.”

Councillor Darren Grimwade (Div 11) said Council received more than 120 requests a year for more animal warning signs.

“We’ll use the data collected from both the signed and non-signed locations to see how effective this program is,” he said.

“These corflute signs are

designed to be a seasonal response to the risk of wildlife on roads during breeding and joey seasons.”

Division 7 Councillor Yvonne Barlow said she had witnessed the tragedy of animal strikes.

“We might own the land here, but they live here these little creatures – this is their home, so we need to be very careful,” she said.

Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland projects manager Matt Cecil said animal strikes re-

mained a significant issue.

“I love the shape of the signs – they’re novel, they’re new – I think they’re going to create some interest within the community,” Mr Cecil said.

Animal expert Martin Fingland from Geckoes Wildlife said the novel shapes were also sure to grab children’s attention.

“It’s often the kids that say to mum and dad, ‘hey there could be koalas along here, I’ve just seen the sign’,” Mr Fingland said.

GUBBI GUBBI elder Dr Eve Fesl is creating a lasting environmental legacy in Burpengary East with the help of the Queensland Koala Crusaders (QKL).

Dr Fesl is working with Crusaders’ volunteers to restore and increase koala habitat on acreage she bought with husband Franz Fesl decades ago.

While much of the property is bushland, volunteers from QKL are clearing weeds and planting new koala-friendly trees to sustain local populations.

Preserving native wildlife is a cause close to Dr Fesl’s heart – she was a member of Victoria’s Save the Kangaroo Committee back in the 1970s.

“I was president of the kangaroo committee and we managed to get kangaroo culling banned in Victoria,” Dr Fesl recalled.

Queensland Koala Crusaders ambassador Kurt Jones, who organised the signs, hopes they will raise awareness of the role motorists can play in keeping native wildlife safe.

Mr Jones, who founded not-for-profit organisation Co-Exist, which engages young people in environ-

mental issues, introduced Dr Fesl to the Queensland Koala Crusaders.

“We’re working with Eve in collaboration to develop a wildlife conservation centre with the vision of running tours and educational programs,” Mr Jones said.

“We want the next generation to step up.”

Queensland Koala Crusaders president Linda Barnes said private landowners held the key to pre-

serving and increasing precious koala habitat.

“It’s not realistic to stop development – 70 percent of established and potential habitat in Queensland is privately owned or leased,” Ms Barnes said.

“Public land tends to be at risk of development – and with all the development on private land we need to give these animals some place to go.”

Ms Barnes said planting

new trees was crucial to supporting koala populations and creating links with existing habitat.

She said it took between 24 and 36 months from planting for a tree to be viable to support a koala.

Bancroft State MP Chris Whiting, who has helped plant trees on Dr Fesl’s property, said all levels of government had a part to play in boosting habitat for native wildlife.

The event, held annually on the first Sunday of March, started more than three decades ago as an initiative to clean up, fix up and conserve the environment.

Deception Bay Scouts group leader Tamara Fealy said it was important for children to give back to their local community.

“By taking part in events like Clean Up Australia Day, it gets our group out into the community where the kids are caring for the environment, picking up rubbish and working as a team,” she said.

The scout group will be cleaning up waterways near their den on Sunday, March 6 from 9am-1pm.

FAMILIES across the region will soon be able to kick a ball around on the new sporting grounds at North Lakes State College, with upgrade work nearing completion.

The school was awarded a $1 million State Government grant to create facilities that could be shared by community sports clubs.

Upgrades include new turf, LED lighting in the towers, sandstone terraces for seating and a new amenities block. The internal fit out for the amenities block is still underway, and includes change rooms, toilets, storage and a canteen.

New BreastScreen service aids fight against cancer STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH REDCLIFFE’S new BreastScreen service has opened, making screening more accessible for women in the Moreton Bay Region.

The facility, at 31 Anzac Ave, has replaced the service previously in Kippa-Ring.

It will deliver an extra 1000 screens a year for the Metro North region.

Service Director Dr Jane Brazier said it would be vital in helping detect breast cancer in older women.

“A breast screen every two years for women aged between 50 and 74 can make such a difference, especially if you detect breast cancer early,” she said.

“If you know women between the age of 50 and 74 years please support and encourage them to take the

time for a breast screen even during their very busy lives.

“I am fortunate to be able help women live longer lives as part of this role.”

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian women, with nine out of 10 women being diagnosed having no family history of breast cancer.

FROM humble beginnings in 1947 at the Redcliffe Showgrounds the Dolphins has become a rugby league powerhouse, producing some of the game’s greatest players and now on the cusp of entering the NRL. On February 27, the club celebrates its 75th birthday and everything it has achieved since then.

Legends to emerge since then have included players like Arthur Beetson, who moved from Roma to Redcliffe to play for the Dolphins in 1964 and was part of the legendary 1965 Brisbane Rugby League Premiership-winning side, and went on to play in the NSWRL and Australia.

He returned to the Dolphins in 1981 and became player-coach.

In its first year, Redcliffe District Rugby League Football Club entered Under 17, Reserve Grade and First Grade teams in the Sandgate Suburban Rugby League competition.

Through the 1950s the club also played in the Kilcoy, Murrumba and Geraghty Cup competitions.

On November 19, 1959 the Dolphins received full district club status and was accepted into the Brisbane First Grade competition.

The Dolphins started playing in the Queensland Cup competition in 2006.

While everyone is keen to know just who the star players of new NRL team the Dolphins will be, it is not just player recruitment the organisation is focusing on.

The Dolphins are working hard to put a strong financial base in place under Chief Executive Terry Reader. Being successful off the field is as imperative to winning on the field under Wayne Bennett.

And with the Dolphins not receiving start-up funding from the NRL, the process of gaining national-level sponsors and growing a membership base is vital.

Some early membership options − including a premium Foundation Membership − will be launched in March, while companies such as Adventure Kings, XXXX and Classic Sportwear have already signed partnership deals.

“Our efforts in building a

strong base through sponsors and the release of our early membership options are vitally important to the success of the team,” Mr Reader said.

Development of the game through player pathways is also high on the list, with systems already in place to allow players from Brisbane and the Moreton Bay Region to succeed at the highest level.

On the field, the Dolphins are pleased with their progress. Recent signings of the Bromwich brothers, Jesse and Kenny, from the Melbourne Storm have made all 16 NRL clubs take notice.

“I’m very happy with the players we’ve signed, they’re all quality players and quality people with good reputations in the game,” Coach Wayne Bennett said.

“We’ve started by signing some quality, experienced players and then we’ll try and bring some younger players in around them.”

The Margate resident, who is now 84 years old, started playing as a 15-yearold soon after he moved to the Redcliffe peninsula from Canungra.

“There was nothing else to do. So, that was it,” Mr Holder said.

“When I first came here, I didn’t have mates. I had to find them and probably through football is how I found them and I’ve still got them, the same ones … those that are still alive.”

He played every season from 1952-59, in the Murrumba District Rugby League competition and then BRL reserve grade.

Mr Holder, who played in the front and second row, said he enjoyed the physicality of it and playing a team sport. It is a passion he passed on to his three sons and something he channelled into coaching juniors and managing teams from 1978-2006.

It was during that time that he worked with some

of the game’s best coaches and players including Peter Leis, Ian ‘Bunny’ Pierce, Greg Conescu, Mark Murray, Greg Oliphant, Brian Winney, Arthur Beetson, Brent Tate, Chris Close, Troy Lindsay, Trevor Day, John Barber, John Abbott, Ross O’Reilly, Anthony Griffin, John Dixon, Neil Wharton and Petero Civoniceva to name a few.

“I’ve seen them all.

There’s been a lot. If I could write a book, it would be full,” he said laughing.

“Bunny was everybody’s favourite. Brent Tate started here and went on and Petero … I had him right from 17s through to when he went away.”

So, it is fair to say he has had a hand in a few rugby league careers? “I haven’t had many knockers that I know of,” he said.

When asked what the highlights have been, he

answers quickly. “Winning premierships. I think I got four of them,” he said.

“I guess I just stuck to it all those years. I never had any arguments with coaches. I made sure things were right for the team, whether it was here or away.”

Mr Holder has also been a key figure behind the scenes, serving on the football club board since 1992.

“All I’ve got to do now is survive until March (for the Dolphins’ first NRL game) next year,” he said laughing. “I’ve just got to keep doing what I’m doing and keep going.”

So, what does being a Dolphin mean to him?

“Everything. Once a Dolphin, always a Dolphin,” Mr Holder said “Wherever you go, you’ll find one. You always know somebody there. I could go to Cairns, Mackay or Roma and know somebody … all over the place.”

He thinks that’s not bad for a kid who moved to Redcliffe and didn’t know anyone.

75 YEARS

Memories to last forever Moreton Daily News spoke to three Dolphins greats about their connection with the club.

Tony Obst Tony Obst began playing at the Dolphins in 1969. He played there until 1982 before going on to play for Brothers under Wayne Bennett. He returned to the Dolphins to finish his career in 1983.

He played about 230 first grade games for Redcliffe and represented Queensland against New South Wales in 1972, 1973, 1975 and 1976 before State of Origin started. He also played for a season in England in 1974.

“I’m a bushy from Longreach and came down to play for the Redcliffe Dolphins. I was really lucky to join this team because there was a bloke who married a girl from Redcliffe, and she used to announce the football

on the radio here, and he spoke to his father-in-law about me,” Obst recalled.

“I played first grade out there (in Redcliffe) when I was 15-years-old. My first season was in 1969. It was a great time.

“Rugby League has always been great for me as it gave me so many opportunities and even allowed me to travel the world.

“It’s wonderful to hear the Dolphins are celebrating 75 years. They have got a great chairman who is a passionate footballer and that’s what you need to have in rugby league clubs.”

Adam Starr Adam Starr started playing at the Dolphins in under-17s in the early 90s.

“Before that I was playing over at Brother’s Holy Spirit at Bray Park, which is what it was called back in those days. Today it’s called Pine Central Holy Spirit Rugby League Football Club,” Starr recalled.

“I played at Dolphins until under-21s and then I went to Sydney for eight years. I started off at the Roosters and then went to the Tigers. I then came back to the Dolphins where I played roughly 130 games.

“I was also there when the club won four Intrust Super finals in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2006.

“In 2002 and 2003 it was great because the Intrust Super finals were played in Redcliffe because Suncorp was being done up.

“The Dolphins have always been a great club to be a part of. It’s always had a good stadium with the grass hills and the tunnel to run out of.”

Starr said the club was a great pathway for young players, who now had the opportunity to stay with the club all the way to the NRL. “My young bloke Cody currently players there. He’s in Under 15s so I try to make as many games as I can,” Starr said.

Michael Roberts Mick Roberts finished high school in Mackay in 1997 and came to Redcliffe to play for the club for the Colts.

“The following year I played my first ever first grade game. I loved it there at the club, as footy has been a big part of my life,” Roberts said.

“I went straight into coaching after I finished playing and coached the Colts. There have only been a few years since moving down here that I wasn’t actively part of the club, but that was when my daughter was born. I’m now back this year and I’m the assistant coach for the Q Cup team.

“There are lots of really strong looking players this year, which is great to see.

“The Dolphins have always been a real familyfriendly-focused club, and now that there is the avenue for players to go into the NRL, that’s really exciting for all the players.

“I remember the 50th anniversary, which was a real big event with lots of reunions. All the Old Boys and old teams got together to talk about their days at the club, and I think the 75th anniversary will be the same. A lot of Old Boys getting together for a beer."

MICHAEL Hipwood is pretty sure he is the first person to wear the Dolphins’ heritage jersey at Graceland, taking the opportunity to show his colours at the home of the late Elvis Presley during a business trip late last month.

The Chief Financial Officer of Murarriebased firm Tritium was in the United States as the company worked on a deal with the Tennessee State Government to build a manufacturing plant for electric vehicle charging stations which will be able to manufacture up to 30,000 of them per year.

While he was there, he visited the New York Stock Exchange where they rang the famous NASDAQ Bell and on his way to Tennessee he stopped at Memphis for a photo opportunity of a lifetime.

The former Caboolture State High School student bought himself a Dolphins’ heritage jersey for his birthday and some for

his family for Christmas, planning to wear his for a photo somewhere in the US while he was there.

“I’d always planned to put it on and wear it somewhere memorable. My mates (also passionate Dolphins supporters and Elvis fans) were a bit jealous I was going to Graceland, so it was the place,” he said.

“I’m pretty sure I’m the first Dolphins supporter to wear the NRL (heritage) jersey at Graceland.”

So, does he think the King (of rock’n’roll, not rugby league) would have approved?

“I’m sure he would have looked good in it. It might have needed a few more rhinestones and a decent collar,” Mr Hipwood said.

He has been a Dolphins fan since he could walk, spurred on by his father who played on the wing in C-Grade for the Dolphins with Arthur Beetson in the 1960s before Beetson went on to play A-Grade.

Mr Hipwood and a group of friends who have been

mates since university all have links to the Dolphins, so when the ARL Commission announced a 17th licence and second Brisbane team, they got behind the bid.

Mr Hipwood never played for the Dolphins, the trip down from Caboolture was too tricky growing up, but he did play at high school and for the Caboolture Snakes.

He remembers listening to Dolphins’ games on the radio and the heroics of Ian ‘Bunny’ Pierce, Tony Obst and others.

It is that history that has cemented his support for the NRL’s newest club.

“I think it will be really good that we have a traditional Brisbane-based team with strong history playing in the NRL. It’s good that Wayne Bennett is the coach and they are signing some good players,” he said.

“I’m looking out every day how we can buy a box or reserve seats so we can support the Dolphins at every match.”

Workshops to treat depression

A NEW mental health program aimed at helping people living with depression and anxiety is starting at Burpengary in March.

The eight-week program, called Dr Neil Nedley’s Depression and Anxiety Recovery program, will be held at the Burpengary Seventh Day Adventist Community Church.

Director and facilitator John Ward said the program followed scientific findings from Dr Nedley, an American physician.

“Dr Nedley completed a study 15 years ago that showed one third of people seeing a physician were also suffering from depression,” Mr Ward said.

“He realised that was a lot of his patients, so he started looking at every study he could find that had been tried and tested on depression.

He took the studies and developed this program based on the findings.”

Mr Ward, who has a background in

pharmaceuticals, attended the program 14 years ago.

Afterwards, he studied to become a director and facilitator, which he has been doing for 13 years.

Mr Ward said the program was beneficial to people who were suffering from illnesses such as depression and anxiety.

“It’s estimated at least one in every 10 Australians is suffering from depression, and about one in five Australians are seeing a doctor but not being treated for their depression,” he said.

“At the first meeting we show a video that explains what we will cover in the coming weeks, and then we break up into smaller group therapy sessions which a facilitator will run,” he said.

“A lot of people have changed their lives. We have had people who have been suffering from depression change their lives, and people who had severe anxiety become more confident.”

Little shop with a big heart STORY KYLIE KNIGHT AT THE heart of Pru Burke’s business is a desire to help struggling families source affordable clothing while at the same time ensuring unwanted items are put to good use and not simply dumped in landfill.

She opened Blackbird Clothing Exchange at its present location in March 2019, after launching it from home for a couple of years earlier.

The idea came soon after Miss Burke had just bought her youngest child Jennifer a complete winter wardrobe, only to discover the youngster had a 15cm growth spurt before she had a chance to wear them.

“I said I wish there was some w h e r e I could take the clothes,” she said.

“People could get value out of their (unwanted) goods and get something in return and it made it cheap and easy for families,” Miss Burke said.

She started with children’s clothing, then added maternity wear and clothing for the whole family before opening the shopfront at Woody Point.

“We knew the day we moved in, it was too small,” she said laughing.

So, why did she take that leap of faith?

“I believed in it. I’ve always seen Blackbird as a need for thousands of families on the peninsula,” Miss Burke said.

The business also offers free school uniforms and book supplies for families in need.

“It’s a shop that cares

about helping the community,” she said.

“I can’t explain how wonderful this community is. It’s not just me, I’m just the conduit. It’s an army out there.”

If she does not stock what people need, she will do her best to source items for them using her contacts and online community.

Blackbird Clothing Exchange is, as the name suggests, an exchange program. People bring in their items and receive store credits for them. They are charged a small opening fee to kick things off.

If they are not shopping with credits, everything in store is $1.

“I don’t make a lot of money but I love it. It’s not about making money and being a big success, it makes me happy every day,” Miss Burke said.

Demand has grown in the three years since she opened and she now has 10,000 followers on Facebook.

“About 70 per cent of our customers each day are new. It’s word of mouth,” she said.

“Other parents are seeing the value and telling their friends.”

In addition to this, every year she raises money to

buy new school supplies, and before school starts, she hosts an open day when parents and carers can come in and fill booklists for free. This year, she even gave away a laptop.

“That’s a special one for me that I work really hard on every year,” Miss Burke said.

She says she can relate to families struggling to cover back-to-school costs just after Christmas and wants to save them that stress.

The shop is open Tuesday to Friday from 9am-4pm and on Saturday from 9amnoon. It is at 100 Oxley Ave, Woody Point.

Miss Burke is planning to expand to offer a wedding dress loan service by the end of March, which will include bridesmaids, page boys and flower girls’ outfits, and formal wear for Year 12 students.

Pawsome donation to RSPCA ANIMALS at Dakabin’s RSPCA shelter waiting for their forever homes have been gifted plenty of treats and toys thanks to the generosity of one Moreton Bay gym.

Staff and members from Crossfit 505 in Burpengary held a trivia night on January 29, where everyone who attended brought donations for the animals.

Crossfit 505 Owner Evan Morris said his gym regularly hosted events to give back to the community.

“We have raised money for lots of different groups in our local community, like veterans’ groups, but this time my gym manager Kelly Henricksen came up with the idea to donate to the RSPCA,” Mr Morris said.

“It was a really great night, with 50-60 people there.

“Everyone brought in items like food, blankets, leashes, toys, collars and tick treatments.

“I want to thank our members for their support, because giving back to the community is important to us.”

PRISCILLA Queen of the Desert may be well-known for its upbeat musical score and outlandish costumes, but it also has a thought-provoking message that resonates now more than ever.

RMT President and Director Madeleine Johns said it was an incredibly brave show for a theatre company like RMT to stage, with high expectations to meet and a complex but incredible set, while also paying the cast and helping the arts industry in its recovery.

COVID-19 also makes staging a musical challenging at present as production companies manage the

challenge of dealing with cast and crew absences.

“Even now, shows are cancelling or being postponed because actors are getting sick,” Ms Johns said.

Careful planning for all scenarios is essential and it adds to the cost of staging a production.

“It’s a matter of absolute teamwork. People have got to work together. It’s difficult days for us to be doing a massive show with huge overheads.

We need the community to get behind us,” she said.

“I want Redcliffe to come out and see the show. It’s a fun show.”

Ms Johns said it had a fabulous musical score but also told a deeper story about the unjust way members of the LGBTIQA community were treated during the 1980s.

“It’s a snapshot in time. It was a time when Australia was grappling with homosexuality, Mardi Gras had only been going a couple of years, there

were fears around AIDS. “It’s good for us to now look at it and say, ‘haven’t we come a long way and how much more inclusive we are, but we still have a way to go and need to have more discussion’.

“Going to see Priscilla can open up these discussions.”

Auditions were held in November and the result is an experienced and talented cast, ready to wow audiences.

Ms Johns said it was a different rehearsal process and more professional − learning the music first followed by intensive all-day rehearsals five days a week before technical work and ‘bumping in’.

“It’s a high standard of show you don’t have to go to QPAC or the Sunshine Coast to see,” she said.

Her favourite scene, visually, is the finale, which has a distinctly Australiana theme with outlandish costumes, while her favourite number is I Will Survive, set in the outback where Aboriginal culture

meets drag queen culture.

“I can’t imagine anyone not walking out and saying that was fun.

It will put a smile on their faces,” Ms Johns said.

The Three Divas will be performing the songs the main characters lip sync to and add an ‘omnipresent sense of fabulousness’ by contributing to the colour and fun of the show.

All three are excited about the show and love the powerhouse opening Raining Men, which is ‘goosebump material and like a runaway train’.

Paige McKay discovered a love for performing at a young age, studying a Bachelor of Musical Theatre at the

Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, and graduating in 2018.

Credits include The Golden Thread with Dead Puppet Society, performing as a guest artist for the Brisbane Helpmann Award Nominations, working on the creative development of Fangirls with Queensland Theatre Company, and Margaret Fulton the Musical.

Laura Greenhalgh, originally from Brisbane, graduated from the University of Ballarat Arts Academy in 2013 and has since toured internationally with live shows including Chatterbox Playtime!

Shannon’s musical theatre credits include Les Misérables, The Boy from Oz, Wicked, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Jesus Christ Superstar, Mamma Mia, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Les Misérables. Shannon is excited to be stepping back into the heels of Bernadette for Redcliffe Musical Theatre’s Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

Shannon, who identifies as nonbinary, has carefully considered the way they want to portray the character of Bernadette, a transgender woman.

“I want the comedy to come from the fact that she’s powerful and funny and knows exactly where she’s been and where she’s going,” Shannon said.

Bernadette has also experienced violence, which was commonplace on the 1970s and 80s.

“The bravery that Bernadette has displayed from the time she decided she was a woman … it wasn’t as known or understood as it’s slowly becoming now.

It’s taking longer than we would all like,” Shannon said.

“The beautiful thing about Priscilla is within the three main characters, there’s three experiences of growing up.

Bernadette’s experience is steeped in the '70s when walking down the street would easily result in violence.”

Shannon said Tick’s was more reflective of his own, when the community was starting to be more accepting, and Felicia’s reflected a more modern experience.

Shannon said being in a production that told a story about your own experience and that of your fellow cast members was special.

The 10-year-old Margate resident is excited to hit the stage in his fourth show with Redcliffe Musical Theatre.

Jaden made his musical theatre debut as part of the ensemble in The School of Rock in 2021. He caught the theatre bug and joined the Redcliffe Musical Theatre’s ROAR Academy shortly after. Jaden performed in the 2021 All Together Now and has been juggling Priscilla rehearsals with ROAR Academy’s Aladdin Jr. He is excited to be the youngest cast member in RMT’s Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

“It’s really disco, music and fun and I like the costumes,” he said

The experienced performer’s bio includes more than 80 shows over the years, mainly in Melbourne – some independent and professional shows, but mostly community theatre.

Carr has just finished performing in Jersey Boys at Star Casino and is looking forward to playing Bob in Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

“Bob is the heart of the show. He’s ‘every man’ in the show and accepts the boys without any judgement,” he said.

“He’s the romantic lead in the show … the leading man who gets the girl.”

Carr said Bob showed complete acceptance of the LGBTIQA community, which is central to the show’s message.

A graduate from the Bachelor of Musical Theatre at the Queensland Conservatorium, Watson prides himself on being a charismatic pocket rocket.

“I was always dancing on the kitchen table as a kid but didn’t discover musical theatre until my later high school years,” Watson said.

Credits include The Producers, Mamma Mia and more. He is embracing the role of Felicia in Priscilla. “As a queer Australian, it’s really rare you get to share a story on stage that’s queer and Australian,” Watson said.

It’s important to him to be able to tell the story and he loves the indestructible energy of Felicia’s character.

The Kelvin Grove resident grew up in Redcliffe and is a Humpybong State School and Mueller College graduate.

He started performing in community theatre when he was five years old with Mousetrap Theatre before he could read.

“This is a full circle moment for me,” he said. He is looking forward to performing as the alternate Bernadette and another character, Miss Understanding, who is a drag queen in Sydney and opens the show, hosting a night at the club where Tick and Adam perform.

“Bernadette is really the heart of the show and her story is such a special one … a trans woman in the '80s and '90s. It was very different to now,” O’Byrne said.

The Springwood resident is a graduate of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and also has a teaching qualification.

Ensor is a versatile performer with a wealth of knowledge from within and outside the industry.

He recently toured with Margaret Fulton The Musical and was in London before COVID-19 hit.

He said Tick’s character fascinated him because he is insecure about his sexuality – having been married and having a child – and struggling with society’s barriers to the gay community. “It’s a representation of how far Australia has come and how far we’ve got to go.”

GARDENS across the region have gone berserk after a wet couple of months, with plenty of new growth but also an increased risk of pests.

Russell Young from Garden Gems Nursery at Burpengary said it was time to get to stuck in, pruning and tidying up to improve airflow and “let the light in”.

“A lot of people are having to prune and mow almost every weekend at the moment. It’s amazing how many things need pruning,” Mr Young said.

For plants that are still young, it is a good idea to prune them by about one-third. When pruning, also trim lower branches to allow light and air in.

It helps retain the shape of the plant and lets light into the understorey and stops the plant becoming woody and lanky.

Another technique, which is particularly good for natives and grevilleas, is to prune the ‘crown’ or top middle section of the plant to promote bushy new growth.

Mr Young said lilly pillies could take a heavy prune.

“You can cut them in half, feed and water and bring them back to a manageable size,” he said.

You can also remove the understorey and grow smaller plants underneath, creating a layered effect.

If pruning hedges, allow the sun to get to the bottom so the plants will get bushy and don’t let the crown get too big. Then,

If you don’t do this, the plants will send out new leggy new shoots and lose their shape.

If drainage is a problem in specific garden beds, it might be a good idea to give some plants a lift, so they are on a mound.

Mr Young said it was also a good time to give roses a summer prune, removing dead wood.

The wet weather and high humidity have combined to create perfect conditions for grasshoppers and snails, which are very active at present.

For grasshoppers, Mr Young recommends spraying a mix of molasses and warm water on leaves to repel them.

Snails are also busy, hiding in trees and shrubs and not

needing to come down because there is so much food on offer with new growth.

Pruning or shaking plants will cause snails to fall to the ground where you can easily collect and dispose of them.

You should also water in the morning, rather than the afternoon, to stop them moving around at night.

Scale and aphids are also a problem at present.

Treatment with white oil spray will sort them out, just don’t do it on a hot day and make sure you don’t use it on bromeliads.

“It’s also a good time to fertilise because there is plenty of moisture in the garden,” Mr Young said.

GROWTH: up to 3m x 3.5m FLOWERS: months at a time Enjoys part-shade, dappled sun and morning sun. It is available in a range of colours and is a clumping rhizome. It is a great understorey plant, which loves the rain and high humidity. Dwarf varieties available.

RHOEO GIANT

GROWTH: up to 0.5m It has tri-colour, variegated leaves with lime green and yellow creating a striking effect. The plant will take a lot of sun and is drought tolerant and responds well to watering and food.

It does, however, perform best in part-shade, otherwise the leaves can become bleached. It is good in pots and could grow with succulents to create a stunning display.

PLEOMELE ‘SONG OF INDIA’

GROWTH: up to 5m Can be pruned to contain it to a manageable height. You can regrow the canes by placing 3-5 canes, cut to different heights, in a pot. Can take full sun but performs best in part-shade.

Needs a few hours of sun per day, will take wet periods but will tolerate dry times. Very adaptive plant. It is good in a tropical garden with palms.

be playing music we haven’t played before.

“We encourage everyone to come down and hear some unique music, as well as celebrating our musicians.”

The orchestra has about 100 members, ranging from young adults to children.

The Youth Symphony, Junior Strings, Moreton Bay Symphony Orchestra (adults)

and the Combined Orchestra will be performing in the twohour showcase.

Highlights include music from the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead, the Russian Golden Mask Festival and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Past Keeping Diggers’ stories alive Blast from the

STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH DOCUMENTARY filmmaker Jeff Hughes is dedicated to preserving Australia’s history by sitting down with veterans to hear their war stories before they’re lost forever.

Mr Hughes interviews men and women who stepped up to defend our country and transforms their life stories and anecdotes into a short film through his not-for-profit project called This Story.

The Albany Creek resident, who co-founded This Story Australia about three years ago, said it was important to capture authentic and personal accounts of history by those who experienced it first-hand.

“When you look at Anzac Day, Remembrance Day, The War Memorial, the Shrine of Remembrance and any of the Cenotaphs around, they are all fantastic representations of dates, times and names, but what’s missing is the personal element,” he said.

“That’s where This Story comes in. We will sit down with a veteran at their home, sometimes for two or three hours, and they can share with us whatever they feel comfortable with, creating that personal connection.

“I always like to start off with things that helped to shape their life – what are their origins, what life was like growing up – before asking them why they enlisted, or in the case of Vietnam, being conscripted.

“By being able to see their laughter, smiles, tears and facial expressions all on film, it creates a better connection to these people to

really get to know the person behind the uniform.

“Veterans also tell us stories they might not have told anyone else – not even their families – because it might have been too difficult or painful for them.”

These raw and emotional tales of bravery are then archived at the Queensland State Library for future generations to learn from and can be accessed online. The videos vary in length from 30 minutes to one hour.

Mr Hughes has interviewed veterans from all over the state who served in various conflicts, including WWII, Vietnam and Afghanistan.

He has also interviewed four veterans from the Moreton Bay Region.

The first veteran he spoke to was Terry Walker, who was born in India but lived in Redcliffe later in his life.

Mr Walker was a Trooper in the Royal Hussars, a cavalry regiment of the British Army, during WWII. Sadly, he passed away in 2021.

He also spoke with Arthur James McClure from Caboolture, who was a Sapper in the Army during World War II. In an emotional video on the This Story website, Mr McClure speaks about why he decided to enter the war, his time in Darwin after it was bombed in 1942, his duty of topography of the Daly River in the Northern Territory, as well as being sent to Papua New Guinea and Borneo.

John Russell, who was born in London and lives at Deception Bay, was a Corporal in the Army who came to Australia when

Vera Lynn’s 1939 classic song We’ll Meet Again was popular during WWII

he was 18. He served for Australia in WWII before joining an expedition to Antarctica with Sir Douglas Mawson.

Lastly, Herbert Claude Bleakley from Woodford was a Leading Aircraftman in the Air Force in WWII. In addition, Mr Hughes also works closely with a number of RSL Sub 1.

With a couple of clear days and light winds finally arriving at the time of writing, a lot of us are keen to get out on the water and make the most of the opportunity, which can be quite rare, particularly during some summers. And with the past year of weather being less than kind, the last thing we want to do is lose fish when we do finally manage to get on the water.

Losing a good fish is a horrible feeling, compounded when we realise it was preventable if we'd only taken the time to double check our tackle. A few basics that regularly cause anglers to lose hooked fish can be; Poorly maintained rods and reels; clunky or seized drags cause massive surges in pressure on our line and these surges can and do regularly cause line breakages.

Corrosion on or seized moving parts can also cause problems. Any surface that our line touches should turn freely where required, be shiny smooth and free of any abrasive texture which at best, scuffs and damages our line, and at worst, particularly when tight to a good fish, will cause it to break with very little pressure. The same applies to corroded rod guides.

Cracked guides will also cut tight line like a scalpel if the line touches the sharp edge of a crack at the wrong angle.

your fishing session. Scuffed leaders and frayed knots should be replaced or retied at the first sign of any damage.

And an often overlooked detail is the sharpness of our hooks.

A small diamond hone fits easily in your pocket and takes a few seconds to touch up hook points. Poorer quality hooks have been known to lose their edge or even break tips off just by dragging across rocks or shell grit type seabed.

Murphy's Law dictates that the cast you don't check will be when your fish of a lifetime turns up.

THERE are seven species of marine turtles in the world and six are known from Australian waters.

Moreton Bay is a marine turtle hotspot with three species commonly using the Moreton Bay Region – the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). Moreton Bay has a resident population of green and loggerhead turtles of all sizes, from small immatures to adults of both sexes. Both species are widely distributed throughout Moreton Bay, but the Moreton and Amity Banks have the highest concentration of them. Hawksbill turtles are generally associated with reef habitats at such areas as Flinders Reef, the rocky reefs offshore of North Stradbroke Island and Peel Island.

The Moreton Bay Region is not an important nesting location for marine turtle species, but some nesting does occur.

Loggerhead turtles do nest sporadically on Moreton, North Stradbroke and South Stradbroke Islands; and also, very occasionally on beaches on the western shoreline (e.g. Scarborough).

This summer, a green turtle has been repeatedly nesting on North Stradbroke Island.

Successful nesting of marine turtles and survival of hatchlings can be negatively impacted by artificial lights as it can disorientate turtles (hatchlings in particular) as under natural conditions they use subtle lighting cues for navigation. Lights at or adjacent to a nesting beach can result in turtle hatchlings not being able to find their way back to the ocean after hatching.

While not important for nesting, Moreton Bay is a very important feeding area for marine turtles. Large immature and adult-sized loggerhead turtles feed in a wide range of tidal and

subtidal habitats including coral and rocky reefs, seagrass beds, and unvegetated sand and mud habitats. The prey of loggerhead turtles is extremely diverse and includes marine snails and bivalve molluscs, crabs like blue swimmer crabs and hermit crabs, jellyfish, sea anemones, sea urchins and sea cucumbers. Green turtles are generally totally herbivorous and feed principally on sea grass, algae and mangrove fruit, but may also feed on large plankton such as the blue jellyfish.

Historically, marine turtles in Moreton Bay were subject to mortality as a result of commercial prawn trawling, but the introduction in the late 1990s of turtle excluder devices, which are highly effective at excluding marine turtles and other large animals, almost totally removed this source of mortality. Green and hawksbill turtles in Moreton Bay die due to the consumption of plastic bags and other pieces of plastic litter, which they most likely mistake for jellyfish. Marine turtle mortality in Moreton Bay can also be related to various disease issues, some of which are linked to poor water quality.

Is 2022 the year for property?

At this time of year, we typically see property “experts” make their predictions on property growth rates for the coming year. It’s worthwhile noting that most “experts” have had pretty unreliable crystal balls in recent times. Mine never predicted Covid, nor did it predict the insane growth in asset values in the past 12+ months. In an era of uncertainty, no crystal ball can accurately predict where we may end up at the end of 2022, however we do have a few indicators that can give us “some sort of lead”.

What will push prices higher this year? Net migration, largely from NSW and Victoria is pushing values in the area higher. Sometimes it takes people from somewhere else to see our area with “different eyes” before we realise how good we have it. I regularly hear buyers that are moving here from afar tell me how they discovered the secret when all the time it’s been under our nose. I don’t think this will change. Our proximity to water, services and Brisbane City will continue to attract buyers from interstate with deep pockets. We also have both the Olympics and the Dolphin’s entry to the NRL to hold the spotlight on us. This should underpin prices and continue upwards pressure on them.

Headwinds to growth. We have a federal election looming, the outcome of which is uncertain. Elections traditionally slow the volume of sales in the market. We have talk of interest rate rises. We know they are coming. Inflation

Lori lands Australia’s top award LORI Chaplin, from Southern Cross Swimming Club, has won the highest award for a swimming official in Australia.

Mrs Chaplin was named the 2021 Roger Smith Technical Official of the Year at the Swimming Australia Awards.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only swimmers were able to attend the Gold Coast awards night.

Mrs Chaplin discovered she had won while stand-

ing on the pool deck at the Queensland Sprint Championships the following day.

“The announcer started going through the winners and suddenly read out my name!” she said. “I just went … what?

“People around me were very kind saying ‘congratulations’, but I really did not expect it. I feel so privileged. It’s a pleasure doing what I do.

“I just try to give back to the sport. I have my husband and children to thank for supporting me so much

while I’m doing this.”

The Burpengary East resident has also been made a life member of Southern Cross, which followed life membership of Brisbane Swimming in 2019.

Mrs Chaplin works at all levels, from schools and club to state, national and at international meets.

Last year, as a Technical Official representing Australia, New Zealand and Oceania, she was on a referees’ boat at the Tokyo Olympic Games

Mrs Chaplin has been officiating for more than 20 years and has a Swimming Australia pin for 10 consecutive years of national meets.

She started officiating at a club meet and worked up through Brisbane and state events to travelling Australia and overseas.

Mrs Chaplin has been reappointed by the sport’s governing body FINA as an open water official for another four-year term.

TIM Gould’s tennis career scaled new heights when he joined the likes of Ash Barty in receiving a 2021 Newcombe Medal.

The North Lakes resident was named Most Outstanding Athlete with a Disability in Queensland at the Australian Tennis Awards.

It is the ultimate award in Australian tennis and followed Gould’s victory at the Australian Open PWII (People With Intellectual Impairment) Division Two for those with Down’s Syndrome.

He won through two rounds before beating Timothy Walsh, from NSW, 6-1 6-2 in the final. He was also part of Team (Wally) Masur which came first.

“I was very happy to win,” said Gould, who plays at Matchpoint, North Lakes, “I was happy with how I played and excited. All sorts of people came over to shake my hand.”

That included former world number one and twice US Open winner Pat Rafter and former Wimbledon and French Open doubles winner Alicia Molik, who is now a TV commentator.

Wimbledon, Australian Open and world number one Ash Barty also waves and chats with Gould when they are on practice courts.

Jason takes charge of juniors REDCLIFFE Dolphins have appointed Jason Goulding as the club’s new junior pathways co-ordinator.

Goulding will oversee the junior program after Steve Crawford became Football Operations Manager.

“Redclif fe Dolphins are no different to any rugby league club or business,” Grant Cleal, Dolphins’ General Manager said. “It all starts with good people.

“That’s what we have with Jason, add in his love for the game and his coaching ability and he makes the perfect person to head our Junior Pathways.”

Goulding, whose playing career was cut short by a motorcycle accident, joined Dolphins in 2018 working with Crawford.

Now he is keen to “build on our resources, share with our affiliate clubs, improve player numbers, player relationships and inter-club participation”.

“We value our volunteers’ time and we don’t want to waste it,” he said.

Luke McDonald was first reserve finalist in the 13 years breaststroke, Maddison Kouvaras was 15th in the 15 years breaststroke and Mara Hoefel 16th in the 10 years breaststroke.

“Brisbane City have come up and recruited well,” Power coach Aaron Philp said, “in fact everyone has recruited well. I don’t think there are any weak clubs this year.

“We have had a bit of a turnover (of players) in the off season, for a variety of reasons, but we’re happy with the players we have recruited.

“I think we’ll be a bit more mobile, the new players bring energy, enthusiasm and speed, but it is still much the same squad as last year.

“Pre-season has been pretty good. We want to be competitive in every game and try to win every game.

This club is always looking at the top four.”

However, Philp is not being drawn into talk of a “three-peat” - a hat-trick of premierships.

Dan Morgan, who played 10 years as a profesisonal at Auckland City and two years in South Africa, is shaping as a big signing.

“I think we are going to have a great season,” the 31-year-old defender said,

“we have a bit of cohesion to get through, which happens with new players.

“I’ll give any insight I can to any of the boys who need direction and to just keep everyone flowing.”

Forward Ante Poljak, 22, who has played in Croatia, Spain, Victoria and for several NPL Qld sides, said he

joined Power “to compete at the highest level, win as many games as possible and win as many trophies as possible. I think a hattrick of titles is possible.”

With Poljak is veteran Jimmy Fairgrieve who first signed for Power in 2002 as an under 9 player and bar a handful of seasons, has

been in blue ever since.

“It’s home for me,” the 38-year-old said, “this is where I feel most comfortable.

“I think we’re going to be good again this year. A lot of the new boys are young and have so much energy, so much ability and potential.”

‘Hungry’ players in Power program HEAD coach Alex Smith is rebuilding and reshaping the FQPL squad with the long-term aim of returning to the top level NPLW. “Some times it takes more than a year to build an elite program,” Power President Craig Feuerriegel said, “but Alex is well on the way.

“He has been given resources to work with, but we have not said you have to get promoted. We want to build the program Alex Smith. to a good level, then results will come with that.

“We have seen an influx of hungry new players.

We have a good Under 23 team this year, which we did not have last season and we will have Under 16s as well next year.

“Alex has no hesitation in recommending players to a higher level and we support that, but our aim is to have that program back in the NPL space.”

Power’s quest for promotion back to the NPL has been boosted by the signing of Kiara Rychvalsky, who won the Sunshine Coast Premier League Golden Boot in 2021 while playing for Nambour Yandina United.

Joining Rychvalsky this season is Amercian goalkeeper Liz Harrington, who has played in the US Women’s Second Division and in Puerto Rico.

Power has re-signed Amercian Ali Schaefer, who will be a leading figure again this season.

Also returning are the likes of Lauren Henderson, Georgia Hill, Sarah Thompson, Nat Browne, Mary Dean and Caitlyn English.

Feuerriegel said the focus was also on Power’s academy program teams which are a “pivotal part” in the development of young players.

New coach, new players take up challenge A NEW era will dawn for Redcliffe Leagues Hockey when it starts the 2022 men’s Brisbane League with a club legend as coach and a new-look squad.

David Garnett, who played almost 250 firstgrade games for Redcliffe and won the 2003 premiership, has taken over at Mary Nairn Fields.

Garnett hopes to lift his

young side off the bottom and instil his passion for Redcliffe in the group.

“I have been with Redcliffe Hockey Club since the age of five. What made me want to coach was the thought of being able to give back to this fantastic club,” Garnett said.

“This club has given me everything - a family, great friends and life mentors. I

hope to use my 45 years of playing and coaching experience at Redcliffe to build a team and culture of unity, integrity and success.”

‘Accountability’ is a buzz word for the team, which starts against Norths at Colmslie on March 5.

“My goals are pretty basic.

I want the squad to achieve its potential through hard work. To see them improve

week to week, take pride in their performances and be accountable to themselves, each other and the club,” he said.

Redcliffe, led by captain Daniel Pritchard and goalkeeper Josh Blakey, an ex-Brisbane Hockey League player of the year, has top emerging talents.

The talented teenager has also been invited to join the first Dolphins Academy, Greater Brisbane squad, which is part of the rugby league junior development pathway.

The Redcliffe State High School student has also been selected for the Brisbane Broncos development program.

Bulls legends lining up for peninsula debut STORY NICK CROCKFORD BULLS Masters will make their debut on the Redcliffe Peninsula next month to help celebrate 100 years (1921-2021) of the Warehouse Cricket Association (WCA).

Two days of centenary events had to be postponed last year due to COVID-19 restrictions, but the team of Queensland and Australia Test greats is coming back.

On Friday March 18, the legends will play a T20 match against a Warehouse Invitation side to officially open the new floodlights at Peninsula Cricket Club’s Filmer Park ground.

Former Test players Ryan Harris, Andy Bichel and Jimmy Maher have played for Bulls Masters along with Queensland regulars Joe Dawes, Luke Feldman, Nathan Reardon.

Bulls Masters line-up is yet to be confirmed, so too the Warehouse team.

However, the evening at Woody Point will be a family affair with fireworks between innings, face painting, fairy floss and food stalls.

“Following the disappointment of having the headline

event of the centenary celebrations called off last year, we are delighted to have the Bulls Masters making their first visit to the peninsula,” Lawrence Christie, the WCA Development Officer and Delegate to Queensland Cricket, said.

Before the T20 game, Bulls Masters will also run a coaching session, at the Woody Point ground, with young players from Redcliffe Cyclones.

Evans on road for round one

REDCLIFFE racer Kyle Evans will today start the journey south for round one of the Australian Formula Ford Championship.

The 17-year-old has a twoday drive to Sandown Park in Victoria for practice on Friday, qualifying and racing Saturday and Sunday.

Evans has been working hard on the set-up of his self-prepared and funded Formula Ford Duratec-powered Spectrum car ahead of the opening round.

SHAUN Richardson had mixed fortunes in the opening round of this year’s ARG Series in Tasmania.

The Kippa-Ring driver from Road Rage Industries, starting his first full season in the national series, finished 12th of 26 cars in the first two races.

But, the 53-year-old was clipped by the “back end of another crash” in race three and knocked out of contention.

“Race 3 hurt us a lot but

thats racing,”said the team on Shaun Richardson Motorsport Facebook page.

“Met some new faces, some great teams and to be racing against the big boys – GRM, the Johnsons – we can’t be any more happier as a team.

“There will now be some “late nights and a lot of work ahead” to prepare the Dodge Challenger for round two down at Phillip Island, Victoria, on March Redcliffe driver Shaun Richardson in action at Launceston.

REDCLIFFE athlete Daniel Harlow has made it two national titles from two starts!

The 13-year-old won his first national crown, the Under 14 90m hurdles, at his first Australian Championships in April last year.

Ten months later, on February 12-13, Harlow stepped onto the national stage again at Sydney Olympic Park and won the Australian Under 15 Combined Events Championship.

The seven-discipline heptathlon, held in heavy rain on day one and heat on day two, saw the title go down the final event.
