WOMEN of all ages are being encouraged to talk about ovarian cancer and get to know the symptoms to help save lives.

With February being Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan said there had never been a better time to start a conversation with your grandmother, mother, daughter, aunty, niece, best friend or co-worker.

Each year about 1300 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer Australia-wide.

It is estimated 240 Queensland women will be diagnosed this year.

Ms McMillan said ovarian cancer was one of the lead-

Ovarian cancer can happen at any age, but usually in women who have been through menopause.

“It is the ninth most common cancer in Australian women, and the sixth leading cause of cancer deaths in Australian women,” she said.

“Of the gynaecological cancers (cervix, ovaries, uterus, vagina and vulva), ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death.

“In 2018, 285 women were diagnosed with ovarian cancer and sadly 206 women lost their lives to the disease in Queensland.

“But there is hope, and survival rates are growing. In Queensland, the

Moreton Bay Regional Council released engineering and heritage reports on Wednesday night in a bid to explain its decision after public outcry which began on Monday when the tenant, Suttons Beach Pavilion announced its closure and the landmark’s demolition on social media.

A petition calling for the landmark to be saved had collected more than 10,000 signatures when Moreton Daily News went to press.

The reports council released to the public included three separate structural engineering reports identifying major building defects and concerns and two heritage investigations which concluded the building’s historical values had been eroded by redevelopments during the past 80 years.

was built in 1937 as change rooms and a kiosk for beach goers. The second pavilion was built in 2002.

Mayor Flannery said the decision to release the reports was critical to correct misinformation circulating on social media.

“Council has been working with the tenant inside the Pavilions since last year (February 25) and we had planned for community consultation about the future of the site,” Mayor Flannery said.

“We will still proceed with this plan and bring forward our community engagement plan to start February 11, so I encourage everyone to read the reports we’ve made public so you can be an informed participant in this program.

“There’s one important outstanding factor you’ll note in reading the reports, and that’s a recommendation to undertake invasive testing of the structure once the tenant vacates the building.”

While the pavilions aren’t on the Queensland Heritage Register, both heritage reports show the cliff face stairs are in near-original condition and Council is absolutely committed to preserving those.”

“This has become an icon of the Peninsula like the Woody Point Jetty and Redcliffe Jetty, and given that the rotunda doesn’t have the same structural issues as Pavilion 1, I believe it can be saved,” he said.

“It’s critical that we maintain the Suttons Beach area as a useable community space, and we want the community’s input on how we can best activate this precinct for the public.”

A MOTHER with fond memories of Suttons Beach Pavilion has started an online petition in a bid to stop its demolition.

Jodie Starr, from Deception Bay, said she felt something had to be done to “stop another iconic building being lost forever”.

“We are losing so many historic buildings from Redcliffe, and I feel Suttons Beach Pavilion is quite special and one of the last original buildings left,” Ms Starr said.

“I had to do something to at least try and stop the demolition because this building is loved by so many.

“I know there are a lot of issues with the building, Jodie Starr started the petition.

Scramble to save wedding plans STORY JODIE POWELL A COUPLE due to hold their wedding at Suttons Beach Pavilion moved heaven and earth to find new venues for their April 2 wedding after news last week the venue would be demolished.

Anton Cavalli proposed to Rebecca Phelps in 2020 at the Suttons Beach Rotunda where they first spent time together, celebrating the occasion with family and friends at Suttons Beach Pavilion.

So it seemed fitting that when they began planning for their wedding they would choose the same venue.

Mr Cavalli said they were devastated to learn the building would be demolished and shocked the venue had known of the plan for almost a year. “(Suttons Pavilion operator) Oli (Thomson) gave me a call January 31 before he posted the news online,” he said.

“I was a bit shocked when I read the letter from Council because if (the venue operators) knew for so long, why book in a wedding?

“I don’t know all the details yet, so I am just going to assume the best – Oli’s my friend and my MC.”

The couple has spent months preparing for the wedding, with invitations sent, wedding attire sorted and an abundance of support from the community.

“So many people have pitched in to make this day awesome and Bec and I feel so loved,” Mr Cavalli said.

“Our celebrant read the article in Dolphins News when I proposed and contacted us offering to marry us when we were ready – we’ve since become wonderful friends.”

After a frantic search, the couple has booked the ceremony at Scarborough’s Reid’s Place and the reception for Redcliffe Golf Club.

“It kind of makes me sad because I know how much time and effort and money has gone into the planning.

We’d bought all the tablecloths and decorations – we will have to see if we can take them back,” he said.

Adding to the couple’s worries is recent news that the stage four bone cancer Mr Cavalli battled in 2020 has flared again in his hip.

Exciting adventure for trio STORY KYLIE KNIGHT TRIPLETS Charlotte, Olivia and Georgia Robinson have done everything together until now but will be forging their own paths as they start Prep at Bounty Boulevard State School this week.

When Moreton Daily News met the youngsters and their mother Steph Lamming last week, they were eager to meet their teacher and make new friends.

“Charlotte has asked every day for the last three weeks, ‘why can’t we start school now’,” Ms Lamming said.

“They’re definitely ready to go but it will be a big change for us all. Annabelle, 6, reads stories to them now and they want to be able to do that.

“Some days, I think I can’t wait for them to start school but other days I

think I’ll really miss them.”

The girls have been together at child care but will embark on their school journey as individuals in three different classes. “(At child care) none of the kids called them by their names, just called them the triplets. They were getting cross at people calling them the wrong names,” Ms Lamming said.

“I want to make it easier for the teacher and I don’t want them compared to each other in class.

“I want them to make their own friends and have their own identities. It’s a big enough school, they’ll be able to do that.”

As far as she knows, her girls are the only triplets in that year level.

Until now, they have done everything together so no doubt they will look forward to seeing each other at lunchbreak and in the playground.

“They’re very used to the school because we’ve done the school run (with Annabelle) for the last two years and they’ve gone to playgroup there and have seen some of the teachers,” Ms Lamming said.

“We have discussed it for two years that they’re going into separate (class) rooms.”

They have been using packed lunchboxes for

months and practising the alphabet and writing in readiness for this week.

Despite all of this, Ms Lamming expected to shed a tear when she dropped them off for the first time.

TEACHERS continue to be committed, dedicated, caring professionals providing support to students and parents as they navigate the challenges of the pandemic including a delayed start to the school year.

Southern Cross Catholic College Head of Secondary Campus Janelle Doohan said they had risen to every challenge, upskilling to become masters in online learning and doing all they could to ensure the school community still felt connected.

Mrs Doohan said the biggest challenges had been uncertainty, ongoing restrictions, disrupted learning and preparing for remote learning during the

initial lockdown.

Restrictions in relation to large gatherings and school events including sporting competitions, performing arts productions, camps, awards and graduation ceremonies, masses and liturgies had also been challenging.

Mrs Doohan said there had however been opportunities to be innovative, creative and to collaborate to improve lesson delivery and engagement with students and families.

“Our team had to very quickly become ‘experts’ in delivering online/remote learning to students from Year 7-12,” she said.

“Teachers helped each other, taught each other,

Rising to the challenge REDCLIFFE Hospital COVID-19 ward Nurse Unit Manager Robyn Easton is proud of the way the whole hospital team has pulled together to rise to the challenges they have faced during the past two years.

Ms Easton has nursed at Redcliffe Hospital for seven years, taking on the role as Nurse Unit Manager in 2020 just before the pandemic took off.

“The biggest thing has been responding to constant change,” she said.

“When it started in 2020, we didn’t know what to expect. Being able to adapt to changes on the fly, that’s something that nurses are quite good at generally.”

Until the recent wave, she said the team had been able to carry out their regular work with “COVID in the background”, and just the occasional patient testing positive.

“That has changed in the

last month,” she said.

The team has had to move two medical wards in order to create two designated COVID-19 wards, with 40 beds in total.

“The teamwork and the support from the Redcliffe Hospital community has been extraordinary. Everyone has gone above and beyond to transition into this new space,” Ms Easton said.

She manages a team of about 30 nurses who have taken on extra shifts to meet demand.

“They’re working really hard,” she said.

They have transferred

worked in groups/teams to ensure continuity of learning using Microsoft TEAMS. “They worked long hours and went above and beyond in planning and preparing online lessons and gathering resources to ensure students were engaging with learning.”

She said they also adapted to ensure online learning suited all learners by providing extra support, where needed.

“Nothing was too difficult and they always took a team approach to dealing with the challenges, while showing care and concern for all areas of students’ learning and wellbeing,” Mrs Doohan said.

They have worked closely with senior students to ensure they graduated, without undue stress, and reached their potential.

“We did this in partnership with parents, which was critical in helping students achieve their best,” she said.

Although there was disappointment when events had to be cancelled or modified, families have been appreciative, supportive and understanding of the challenges. College staff have rallied to support each other, checking in with each other regularly, sharing tips for online teaching, recognising peers’ efforts and starting each day with a prayer.

from other units to the COVID-19 unit, working in full PPE each shift.

“It’s quite hot. Often, we come out of those units and our clothes are wet,” Ms Easton said.

The hospital has been providing additional uniforms to ensure nurses can change and are as comfortable as they can be under the circumstances.

While the team is tired, they are taking it in their stride.

“Nurses are used to having periods of time when they are exceptionally busy. It’s about working together and taking care of each other’s wellbeing as well,” Ms Easton said.

She said it had been rewarding to help the community throughout the pandemic.

“We’re acutely aware that our patients are not allowed to have visitors. We’re the only people that they’re seeing, as well as the medical

“We’re providing care to them and speaking with families to reduce their anxiety, keeping them updated, being that kind voice and just providing that gentle care for our patients.”

It is care that patients and their families have appreciated, with the team receiving letters and heartfelt thanks.

Her message to the community is to keep doing what they are being asked to do – get vaccinated and stay at home if they are unwell to protect themselves and others. This in turn reduces the number of hospital admissions and strain on the team.

“We’re just here doing our jobs. This is what we’ve always done. This is what we do every day. It’s just a heightened environment because this is a pandemic but we’re happy to do it,” she said.

Rockin’ fundraiser to help Bazz STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH THE community is rallying around a much-loved Redcliffe man who was allegedly assaulted last month by hosting a special fundraiser to help pay his medical bills.

Barry Anderson, who is well known within the AFL community, sustained serious injuries during an alleged assault.

Mr Anderson, pictured, was walking along Marine Pde, Redcliffe, when the incident occurred.

Speaking from his home last week, Mr Anderson said “every day above ground is a good day”.

“It’s been a few weeks now and I am getting better every day. The swelling and bruising are almost gone,” he said.

“I had six stitches in my head but now they have been taken out, so that’s another step in the right direction.

“But I do still get really bad vertigo when I move my head. When I get out of bed the whole bedroom spins, but I am hoping that will go away in time.”

Mr Nebe has organised “The Bazzathon” fundraiser which will be held at the Redcliffe Tigers Football Club, Rothwell, from 2pm on February 19.

“It’s the least we can do for Bazz, and we hope this fundraiser will help him with his expensive medical bills,” he said.

inundated with offers of help. The day will feature live entertainment, including the all-female AC/DC tribute band Her Way to Hell, as well as Levi X, and Me and Jodie Lee. There will also be children’s games throughout the day, making this a family friendly event.

Decade of growth paves way for the future MORETON BAY REGION 2011-2021: THEN AND NOW

STORY JODIE POWELL ATTENDANCE at events, the Moreton Bay Region’s population, sport and recreation facilities and the number of parks and open spaces have surged in the past 10 years.

The final report on the Community Plan 2011-2021 found Moreton Bay Regional Council had spent more than $367 million on building and major renovations for community sport and recreation facilities, planted more than 46,000 trees a year with help from the community and created 111 percent more shared pathways.

Mayor Peter Flannery said one of the most significant achievements of the past decade had been cementing the amalgamation of Redcliffe, Pine Rivers and Caboolture councils in 2008.

“While there’s countless activities to mention, the most ground-breaking has been the amalgamation of our Council,” Mayor Flannery said.

We have big ambitions for the next decade “This action alone was the catalyst for supercharging the region, bringing with it the bigger budgets and better co-ordination and delivery of projects needed to transform and build on all of the great things we have in Moreton Bay.” The Community Plan 2011-2021 provided a framework for Council to work towards a vision around the key themes of Creating Opportunities, Strengthening Communities and Valuing Lifestyle.

With the plan expiring at the end of last year, Council will refresh its vision and incorporate it into its Corporate Plan 2022-2027, which is due for adoption in June.

Other significant milestones included contribut-

ing $108 million to complete 12.6km dual track Moreton Bay Rail Link, securing a university campus at The Mill at Petrie, creating the Moreton Bay Koala Conservation Partnership Project to protect koalas, and building the North Lakes Library and Community Centre.

Door-to-door mental health initiative

STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH REDCLIFFE residents can expect a knock at their front door during the coming months to gauge interest and collect important data for a new mental health initiative.

Door knockers known as ‘people connectors’ are hitting the streets from now until April as part of the Assisting Communities through Direct Connection (ACDC) project.

The aim is to talk to res-

idents about their mental health and link them with wellbeing services in the area, while also gathering feedback on any service gaps.

It is funded by the Department of Social Services and run by Community Mental Health Australia, with CEO Bill Gye urging people to take part.

“Unfortunately for many reasons people do not want to talk about or even think about their mental health.

People prefer to tough it out, hide from others, or

avoid the stigma,” he said.

“Often, people only look for or receive support when they are in crisis. But prevention and early intervention is far more effective.

“We must be more proactive connecting and communicating with people about the importance of wellbeing.

“That’s why the ACDC Project is going directly to households in Australia to engage them in conversation about these important issues.”

ACDC was run throughout Brisbane and Ipswich in 2021, with data from Ipswich showing people were struggling, especially since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of the 494 people who engaged with a people connector, they were able to determine 39 per cent of householders said they currently had, or were living with, mental health issues. Of that number, 82 per cent said they had received a formal diagnosis.

Traumatic Stress Disorder and schizophrenia were among the most prevalent conditions identified. In addition, 43 per cent of all householders indicated they wanted to seek help for their mental health in the past 12 months, and 40 per cent said they did not get the help they needed.

McKeown’s formative swimming career was at Australian Crawl in Burpengary with junior development coach Jodie Morgan and head coach Chris Mooney.

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, she won gold in the women’s 4x100m medley relay, women’s individual 100m and 200m backstroke and bronze in the mixed 4x100m medley relay.

CRAD RICHARD SMITH CRAD Smith has had a long and distinguished career over several decades, as a member of the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) across a variety of roles.

His passion for the ambulance service began when he joined in December 1985 as an Honorary Ambulance Officer in Cabool-

Mrs Howell was in the role at Murrumba from 1994-2003 and Redcliffe from 2016-2017.

Pandemic support for workers

Timber lining to dual crises THERE may be a shortage of timber but there is no shortage of camaraderie among staff, customers and suppliers, according to Palletmasters’ General Manager Lorraine Hughes.

Ms Hughes said it was one of the good things to come out of COVID-19 which, coupled with the so-called ‘Black Summer’ bushfires, had resulted in a shortage of timber and staff.

“It’s all about relationships and it’s really helped us through this,” she said.

“The whole business mindset has changed. We’re all in this together, we’re all trying to achieve and I think if you can say anything good has come out of COVID, that’s possibly one of the things. We’re all generally more understanding of the challenges.”

The Clontarf-based business has been around for about 40 years and is still owned by members of the

Jackson family – Joanne and Paul who are children of founder Kevin.

It is a successful business, of which Ms Hughes has been at the helm for the past three years and worked in for seven.

“We have 50 staff on site but we’re looking for more.

Staffing’s a real challenge at the minute, trying to get people,” Ms Hughes said.

Previous experience is not necessary for the six roles she is keen to fill, just a good attitude and willingness to work. A forklift licence would also be helpful but is not essential.

The company sources its timber from Queensland and New South Wales and with about 30 per cent of stock lost in the devastating bushfires of 2019-2020, supply has been a significant challenge.

“It’s a massive problem for everybody across the country. We’ve got people phoning us from other states saying, ‘please can

you help, our current pallet manufacturer is letting us down’. We’re saying, ‘no, they’re not letting you down, we’re the same’,” Ms Hughes said.

“Everybody’s in the same boat. There’s competitors in the business but we tend to have a pretty good relationship with people and now we’re all in it together. It’s a very different approach. We’re all struggling to get timber. We use about 25,000 cubic metres of timber a year.”

is buying larger pieces of timber and processing them so they are suitable for pallets.

“It’s not something we’ve ever been geared up to do.

We’ve had a machine there that used to come out a couple of times a year, if we had some timber that needed resizing,” she said.

“Now, we have two shifts a day running on that machine six days a week just to be able to process enough timber to make the pallets.”

It requires more staff and costs the business more, and it’s still not enough to

meet demand.

Ms Hughes said pallets were essential for a large number of businesses needing to move product and produce. She’s particularly concerned about the upcoming citrus season and is advising customers to source pallets where they can.

“It’s a massive issue and I don’t think people realise the onflow of it. Everything comes on a pallet,” she said.

The business has worked with customers whose need was most critical to supply them as best they could and paid suppliers straight away to ensure they had adequate cashflow, particularly smaller timber mills.

Palletmasters’ biggest supplier is AKD at Caboolture, which has expanded to increase its capacity.

“We have very much a focus of making sure we look after our suppliers as much as we try and look after our customers,” Ms Hughes said.

The Pandemic Leave Disaster Payment is a lump sum payment of up to $1500 for each 14-day isolation period.

Bringing wheely great show to region STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH REDCLIFFE motoring enthusiast Rohan James Robertson is sharing his love of classic vehicles by hosting a number of car shows across the Moreton Bay Region this year.

Rohan runs Cardi Gras, an event that brings petrol heads together to browse antique rides in one location, while also raising money for charities that assist the homeless.

This year the hugely popular family-friendly event will be held in Strathpine, Pine Rivers and the Ocean View Estate Winery and Restaurant across multiple dates.

“Cardi Gras is about giving everyone the chance to show off their pride and joy to other enthusiasts and spectators,” Rohan said.

“We welcome anyone who would love to show off their wheels, from car clubs to individual car owners.

“In the past, we have had everything from a 1914 Whitley Whippet right through to the brand-new mustangs, and everything else in between.

“There is always a wide range of cars to look at, and we hand out trophies

for people who bring their cars down to be on display.

“We have trophies for best vehicle in show, best classic, best muscle, best hot rod, best paint, best club display and the people’s choice award.”

Rohan said people might know the event under its previous name, Hotrods for the Homeless.

He changed the name to Cardi Gras in 2019. The name was inspired by a friend who described his event as “like Mardi Gras, but with cars”.

Today, Cardi Gras events are held across other regions in South East Queensland including Ipswich, Blackbutt and Caloundra.

Cars have always been a big part of Rohan’s life, with his passion stemming from his father.

“My dad was a marine engineer and when he married my mum, he left the seas and settled down on land and became a mechanical engineer,” he said.

“He used to deck out his walls with hot rod memorabilia, photos and pin-up girls. I remember dad put me and my two sisters, my grandparents and my mum in an old HQ Holden and we drove from

Taree all the way up to the old Scarborough Caravan Park where we spent a week in 1972.”

While Rohan drives a more modern vehicle today, it does have a special meaning to him.

“One of my dad’s friends had a MGB car – one of the 1962 soft tops – and he let me drive it a few times,” he said.

“I always said if I ever

had the money, I would get an MG. When my dad passed away in 2019, I got my inheritance and bought myself a car.

“I couldn’t afford an MGB because these days they are worth over $100,000 but at least I could buy an MG3 because they are only like $19,000. So now, I can say I have an MG. It’s a funny tongue-in-cheek joke for

our family.”

Cardi Gras events will be held on the third Saturday of each month at the Strathpine Centre from 8am-noon for Breakfast with the Cars, as well as the Cars among the Vines at Ocean View Estate Winery and Restaurant on the third Sunday of each month from 2-6pm.

This show will also feature markets and car swap meets.

Rohan will also be organising four Cardi Gras events at Club Pine Rivers.

Entry for spectators is a gold coin donation. Events will depend on the ongoing COVID-19 situation, with Rohan to post updates on the Cardi Gras Facebook page and website.

LIFE Without Barriers’ HIPPY program is preparing parents and little ones for school, boosting numeracy, literacy and self-confidence.

The Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY) has been running for about seven years at Deception Bay. It is a free two-year, hometutoring program which helps build parent or carer confidence as their child’s first teacher.

Through free activity packs, as well as visits from a trained tutor, the program provides the tools families need to learn and play.

The packs support learning in the following areas: thinking and exploring; communication; creativity; social and emotional; family and community.

HIPPY Co-ordinator Deception Bay Rycille Tighe said mentors worked with families and children aged three to four years.

“We aim to make parents their child’s first teacher through fun and engaging literacy and numeracy activities,” she said.

New friendships blossom STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH MEMBERS of the North Lakes Lions Club have passed on a number of important life skills to the next generation while mentoring a group of primary school students.

The men taught a group of boys in Year 4 and 2 at Mango Hill State School how to build and care for a garden bed as part of a mentoring program last year.

North Lakes Lion Alan Brown said he found the experience “very

rewarding”. “We enjoyed going down to the school and meeting the boys and teaching them some valuable skills,” he said.

“All the boys worked together. The older boys helped the younger boys, which was great to see.

“It wasn’t only the boys that got a lot out of this, but we did too. It was very rewarding.”

Members from the Lions club visited over a number of weeks to work on the project.

“The school bought the soil and the plants and

later on I brought in some compost and told them all about it and how it worked,” Mr Brown said.

“A roster was even made for the boys to come in every second day and do the watering.”

Mr Brown said the boys were proud of what they had accomplished.

“There was one time when we were still working when the bell went for their little lunch, and we asked them if they wanted to go but they all wanted to stay and finish,” he said.

“The boys were really proud of what they had achieved and were even bringing their friends up to show them what they had done.”

All the boys received a Lions Paw badge to keep for a job well done.

“The boys were putting the pins on their backpacks and on their hats. They loved it,” Mr Brown said.

The club is hoping to become involved in more projects with the school throughout the year.

Dan Ford Jazz Group will be performing at the upcoming Park Jam sessions.

HE has played at jazz bars and events across Europe and Australia, and now Brisbane saxophonist and composer Dan Ford will be entertaining music lovers at Council’s upcoming Park Jam sessions.

Ford is one of a number of artists who have signed up for the free music in the park event, which will be held over three weekends.

He said he was looking forward to bringing his unique sound to a whole new audience.

“I have performed in the Moreton Bay Region before, and I think that got me on the radar for Park Jam,” Ford said.

“The Park Jam events are a great idea because it’s a good way to reach an audience that you might not find at a jazz bar or a club.

“It’s like a public service really in a way, because music is a very important

a s p e c t in all our lives, and this way people can come along and enjoy without spending money.”

Dan Ford Jazz Group will perform an array of original songs which Ford wrote himself, as well as some well-known jazz tunes.

Six artists will perform throughout the event, with the music ranging from RnB to indie folk and atmospheric jazz.

All events are open to all ages, are free to attend and will run from 3-6pm. No bookings required.

Art prize unearths emerging talent STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH ARTIST BJ Murphy has always liked to dabble in different styles of art, but he never thought a spurof-the-moment photograph would win him the top prize in the region’s biggest art competition.

Mr Murphy wowed the judges in last year’s Moreton Bay Region Art Prize with a stunning photo of himself inside a hollowed-out tree in the forest.

The photo was taken by his friend Jo-anne Driessens, but the concept was his idea.

The portrait represented his connection to his country and his ancestors.

“This was the first time I had entered the Moreton Bay Region Art Prize, and the first significant art prize I had won so I was really blown away,” Mr Murphy said.

“I got that feeling of finally making it and being acknowledged for the effort I have put into my art over the years.

Heartfelt effort for charity STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH TRAINERS from 5ive Elements Fitness will be doing a lot of burpees this month with members paying them to do the dreaded exercise to raise funds to fight Australia’s biggest killer.

The North Lakes gym is taking part in REDFEB, an initiative by Heart Research Australia to

raise awareness of heart disease, which kills more Australian men and women than any other disease.

They are hoping to raise $2000 by asking members to donate $1 towards the trainer of their choice, with the trainer then made to do one burpee.

Jayde Beilby from 5ive Element Fitness said they were pleased to raise money for the worthy cause.

“Why 5ive Element Fitness chose to support REDFEB is because of our slogan – Where’s your heart at?” Ms Beilby said.

An estimated 20 per cent of the nation’s donors have been unable to donate on any given day in recent weeks due to record numbers of people isolating or unwell with COVID-19.

Lifeblood spokesperson Cath Stone said it was as if winter had come early with cancellations, no-shows, and fewer appointments.

“It’s a real challenge for blood supplies because even in the midst of a pandemic there are still cancer patients, trauma cases, pregnant women and unborn babies who all require donated blood,” Ms Stone said.

“You only need to be clear of COVID-19 symptoms for seven days to donate.

“There is no substitute for blood...and new donors are critical to keep supplies flowing to our hospitals.”

While Lifeblood encourages booking, centres are welcoming walk-ins.

“Donating blood will take only one hour of your time,” Ms Stone said.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT GARTH Peake’s passion for road policing was sparked as a 19-year-old, straight out of the academy, and it remains a driving force almost 40 years later as he hands the radar gun to the next generation.

The Highway Patrol Deception Bay Officer in Charge is retiring this week after four decades in the job, including 25 years in the Moreton District – initially Redcliffe and then a combined Caboolture-Redcliffe traffic branch.

During that time, he has adapted to numerous Queensland Police Service restructures, unit name changes and evolving technology but the aim has remained the same – to reduce the number of traffic crashes and save lives.

It all started in 1982, when the then law clerk decided he wanted to be a solicitor but was told his tertiary entrance score was five points too low and he would need to return to school to improve his grade.

“So I promptly

went around to police headquarters and started on the 17th of January, 1983,” Senior Sergeant Peake said.

After graduating from the police academy, he had a short stint in the Brisbane city traffic branch before moving to Mackay (eight years), then Gympie (6-7 years) and finally Redcliffe and Deception Bay in 1996.

“I really liked what I did. I could see us making a difference in this area,” he said.

“Anything and everything happens in traffic.

I’ve been very fortunate in attending all sorts of jobs from murders down – not having to investigate them of course, that’s where the experts come in – but I have certainly been in the thick of it and that’s what’s been probably the most enjoyable part.

“Often times, you’re the first one there because we’re out in the car and driving around and the call comes through ‘any unit, any unit’ and that’s when the traffic branch usually gets there first.”

Key to his role has been building strong relationships with stakeholders in the community.

“That’s invaluable, in my mind,” he said. “We’ve got a pretty good network and it works well in this area and has for a long time. There’s a lot of mutual respect between council and the station. We don’t involve ourselves in politics, it’s just about getting things done

and there’s some pretty good people out there if you just ask nicely.

“It’s a bonus for this area because we can get things done properly and quickly.”

The job has also given the Burpengary East resident once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to be part of international events including the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 2002 and the G20 in Brisbane in 2014.

Don't try to find excuses “Those things just put a firecracker under you because you’ve really got to start thinking differently,” Sen-Sgt Peake said.

“I had the privilege of looking after Prime Minister Tony Abbott during G20 as the lead car going into everything. We parked next to Barrack Obama and Putin on the other side – that’s how close to the middle of it I was.

“That was just amazing.

It was just the luck of the draw. I thought I’d won the Lotto that day.

“Even the Commonwealth Games, as much of a schmozzle that was (expected to be), the police really pulled that together. The road policing command had a lot to do with

the co-ordination of traffic and all the movement and we had some really good experts in amongst that team and it came together and worked really well.”

Sen-Sgt Peake said while the majority of people tried to do the right thing, speeding, drug and drink driving, juveniles stealing cars and distraction caused by mobile phones were the biggest road safety issues.

“It’s like the other day (someone doing) 172km/h on our highway. That’s happening every day and those are the ones we want to stop. Some people don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, ‘the car can go that fast and I’m a good driver’,” he said.

“It’s an attitudinal thing.

I’ve been spruiking those lines for years but it’s not changing.”

Sen-Sgt Peake said all drivers needed to take responsibility for their actions and a rise in ‘the age of entitlement’ spurred on by social media was not helpful.

“Don’t try to find excuses.

When people accept responsibility, it makes things so much easier,” he said.

So, why has road policing held his interest for so long?

“It’s just a passion for trying to get it right and change things and I’m a very keen fisherman,” he said, laughing. “When you’ve got a radar gun in your hand…it’s a little bit like fishing sometimes – waiting for that big bite.”

The Social Walk it Off Group (SWOG) gives 12 residents, including bus driver Frank Tanti, the chance to enjoy a leisurely

or strenuous walk, a visit to the shops and a bite to eat. They are usually out from 9am-3pm.

Mr Tanti said people of all ages could “get on the bus” and take part at their own pace.

He drives the 12-seater bus to their walking destination, which is typically by the water on the Redcliffe peninsula at Suttons Beach,

Scarborough or Woody Point.

“Some live by themselves and they talk like crazy on the bus going there,” he said.

“It’s amazing how they lift themselves, when they come back (in a brighter mood).”

There are usually 12 people in the group and they have been enjoying the monthly walks and outings for about one year.

Youngs Crossing Road f lood f ix starting this year STORY JODIE POWELL WORK on a long-awaited bridge to mitigate flooding issues on Youngs Crossing Rd at Joyner is expected to start in the second half of the year.

Moreton Bay Regional Council announced at its first meeting of the year that expressions of interest to build the 212m bridge would be sought this month.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the bridge would improve flood immunity and cater for growing traffic on the notorious stretch of road.

“Right now, 20,000 vehicles (per day) use this

stretch of road,” he said.

“That’s thousands of locals cut off from vital services the moment heavy rain rolls through or the nearby dam releases water.”

As part of the project – jointly funded by Council and the Federal Government – the bridge will be built west of the existing road.

The project will include upgrades to the Protheroe Rd intersection and ongoing access to a nearby park.

Mayor Flannery said the project was expected to generate more than 500 jobs.

Dutton welcomed progress on the project and said the Federal Government had committed more than $30 million towards the upgrade.

“It only takes a few severe storms like the ones we’ve seen just this summer to put Youngs Crossing out of action, forcing drivers to take a much longer detour and putting pressure on other roads like the Bruce Highway and Old Gympie Rd,” Mr Dutton said.

The expressions of interest process will run until April, with shortlisted businesses then invited to tender for the project and start work in the second half of the year.

A new bridge to be built at Youngs Crossing will alleviate flooding issues that close the road.

THE skills young people develop through Australian Navy Cadets set them up for life no matter what career path they choose, according to TS Moreton Bay Australian Navy Cadets Commanding Officer Lieutenant AJ Hughes.

Lt Hughes speaks from experience, having started with the cadets as a 13-year-old and progressing through the ranks to now oversee the Woody Point unit.

He said it was a develop-

“There’s a wide range of activities to do,” Lt Hughes said.

9.30pm, weekend activities including sailing, powerboating, kayaking, standup paddleboarding; weeklong camps; access to visits to Defence establishments including Navy ships; adventurist training; firearms training and more.

“It’s very affordable for parents at $200 per year, per cadet. Everything else goes towards fuel and food for activities,” he said.

It is a full maritime program that can lead to other opportunities.

work and communication – skills which are transferrable to any career later in life.

Cadets also progress through the rank system and senior cadets play a key role in planning and running activities, furthering their personal development.

The maritime activities are run once a month, firearms activities occur every six months and camps are run twice a year.

The unit takes part in weekend camps from time to time.

The unit is also involved

in community activities such as Anzac Day. Lt Hughes said cadets from across north Brisbane and the Moreton Bay Region were part of the unit.

There are eight volunteers connected with the unit, which is comprised of six uniformed volunteers and two parent volunteers, including Lt Hughes.

The unit has 40 active cadets, but with the new school year the unit is actively recruiting more.

Its first parade of 2022 is on February 11.

“We want Moreton Bay’s young people to not only dream big, but to know that we believe in them, and want to help them achieve what they might think is impossible.

The program aims to put the spotlight on the study of STEM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

There are more than $10,000 in prizes up for grabs.

Phase 1 entries close on March 31, with finalists announced on April 21. Phase 2 is a series of mentoring sessions in April and May, with the awards ceremony on June 22.

LAWN grubs are decimating lawns across the region in large numbers enjoying summer heat, high rainfall and humidity.

The conditions are ideal for pupa, that have been patiently waiting in the soil below the grass, to hatch.

Coochie HydroGreen North Lakes area manager Paul Martin said it was a perfect storm.

“They’re everywhere. We’ve been in full swing treating them since October,” Mr Martin said.

“There’s a lot of lawns out there that are damaged.”

He said the grubs, with ‘champagne taste’ went in search of healthy lawns to devour.

He said he would receive 10 calls a month from clients who had spent thousands laying new lawns which already had grubs in them.

Many people buy retail products to treat their lawns, but the grubs return because no preventative treatment has been applied.

“It’s all about prevention and maintenance, if you don’t do your homework, they’ll be back,” Mr Martin said.

“Top of the tree for lawn grubs is a healthy, well-fed lawn,” he said.

So, what are the signs to look for, so your backyard does not become a lawn grub buffet?

“Your first sign is your lawn will look brown and you’ll think it’s dry. A lot of people confuse irrigation with lawn grubs. It’s a shift in the way the lawn looks,” Coochie HydroGreen franchise owner Ian McLeod said.

You will also notice moths and small grey wasps flying around. Then clusters of eggs will form on gutters and soffits, which resemble small balls of cotton wool.

Each cluster can have 400-500 eggs in it.

“They come down on little spider silks, like a parachute or bungy cord, as tiny little grubs – they call them instars – and they’re no bigger than a pinhead,” Mr McLeod said.

“He hits the ground and starts eating. He eats in the lawn for around two weeks until he gets to the size of your finger. Then he will dig down and start to metamorphosize into a pupa.

“The pupa will stay in the

soil and then emerge as a moth.

They can do up to six generations in one year.

That’s just one moth, one family.”

Mr McLeod said a lawn could be ‘back to bone’ within 3-4 days.

“They eat the leaf, not the whole plant − they don’t attack the roots. It’s like using thinning scissors through your hair.

“They’re thinning it out by eating the leaf. Then, the roots and soil are exposed,” he says.

“It doesn’t kill it, but what happens is all the weeds come in and the lawn gets dried out and bakes the soil. Then your soil become hydrophobic.

It starts to repel water like greaseproof paper.”

The best way to deal with lawn grubs is to apply preventative treatments every eight weeks.

“If you brush the eggs off a surface, they will die but that’s more for aesthetics because you won’t actually stop them.

You can clean them one day and they’re back the next,” Mr McLeod said.

“Treatment won’t stop them from laying the eggs, but if they hatch and hit that lawn they will die within seconds.”

A LOVE for amateur theatre has prompted Fay Richards to transition from acting on stage to jumping into the director’s chair.

The lifelong member of Mousetrap Theatre Company has been overseeing early rehearsals for the group’s upcoming mystery thriller, Dial M for Murder.

The curtain will rise for nine shows between February 25 and March 13.

Mrs Richards said she was excited about her new role.

“I have been acting since 1993 and I have done heaps of shows with Mousetrap Theatre,” she said. “I’ve had a few lead roles in past productions, and comedy shows have always been my favourite.

“Doing cabaret when your body is young and supple enough to do those high kicks is easy, but now…. it’s a big nope from me. Now it’s fun to be the person leading the play.”

The story takes the audience on a suspenseful journey of revenge, blackmail and murder. The main character Tony plots to have his wealthy wife Margot murdered so he can get his hands on her inheritance. After discovering Margot is having an affair, Tony comes up with a plan to kill her by blackmailing an old acquaintance to do the deed.

But when things go astray, he must outwit the police.

“The movie makes it look easy, but when you are doing it in front of a live audience every day on a small stage, it’s completely different… there’s much more to it,” she said.

Danielle Latta launched Tawny Trails in November 2021 to drum up more visitors to the hinterland’s galleries, museums, national parks, restaurants, wineries and hotels.

Visitors will experience the charming towns of Woodford and Dayboro, as well as the picturesque roads of Mount Mee, Ocean View, Clear Mountain, Samford and Wights Mountain on the 70km adventure.

Ms Latta described the trail as a “creative living experience” with something for everyone of all ages and interests to enjoy.

“Creative living is partly about exploring, experiencing, and experimenting. So, we decided to incorporate not only stunning state-ofthe-art galleries and brilliant unique art studios but also lifestyle elements,” she said.

“Along this picturesque journey you will find an

During my interactions with beginners, I continually hear they've searched YouTube or social media and significant numbers of them are overwhelmed by the diversity and technicality of the advice being handed out via these sources.

While some advice and tips may be valid and showcasing the latest and greatest tackle on offer delivers for sponsors and manufacturers, the conflicting nature of quite a lot of the information due to competition for likes, views and subscribers results in information overload and confusion for the parents and grandparents who just want to take the kids fishing for the first time. It's supposed to be fun, not stressful, yes?

While high-end rods and reels, the latest and greatest lures or the current trendy knots and rigs are beautiful to use and successfully using a new technique, rig or piece of tackle can deliver a great sense of satisfaction, they aren't required for families to go out, enjoy a few hours on the beach or at the local jetty and have the kids catch a fish.

The excitement a child shows when catching their first fish is so openly honest and unrestrained, it's beautiful, and the memories being created are priceless for everyone concerned, but it won't happen if the adults decide to do something else.

So, for any beginners out there thinking about having a go, grab a handline or an entry level rod and reel combo, some fresh bait, a few sinkers and some small hooks, (kids just want to catch something, they don't care if it's big), learn one simple, basic knot, and get out there and give it a shot.

It definitely beats sitting at home staring at a screen. Have a yarn to fellow fishos on the day as well.

Most of them are quite happy to offer some advice to help a newcomer learn the ropes.

And for those of us who may be more experienced, maybe it's time to remind ourselves why we love fishing so much?

FLATHEAD are always a popular target for recreational fishers. Flathead belong to the family Platycephalidae and there are approximately 80 species known worldwide and well over half of these are known from Australia.

The name of the family is derived from the Greek words platy, meaning "flat", and kephale for "head". Most species are only small fish (less than 20cm) and they live in depths from about 1-300m.

There are three species anglers generally encounter around the Moreton region – the dusky flathead (Platycephalus fuscus), the bar tailed flathead (Platycephalus australis) and the sand flathead (Platycephalus endrachtensis). Anglers fishing offshore over sandy habitat frequently catch the eastern blue spot flathead (Platycephalus caeruleopunctatus).

The dusky flathead is the largest member of the family and the species most frequently targeted and caught by anglers in Moreton Bay. It is differentiated from the other common species by the presence of large dark blotch on the tail. It is restricted to the Australian east coast and ranges from approximately Cairns to the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria and prefers shallow water (generally less than 10m).

and spawn at surf bars like Jumpinpin from November through to April. Fish can spawn more than once per spawning season.

Dusky flathead that are present in estuarine locations at that time of the year do not spawn.

Small juveniles less than 12cm first appear in nursery areas such as seagrass and mangrove areas 1-2 months after spawning.

Female dusky flathead grow much larger than males and live longer. In Queensland, female dusky flathead reach a maximum age of about 11 years and males about seven years.

The majority of dusky flathead over about 45cm are females.

While dusky flathead move around Moreton Bay, the vast majority of fish stay within the bay.

As many an angler knows, flathead have venomous spines either side of their gill covers.

Surprisingly the venom and venom apparatus is poorly studied.

Tickets are on sale now for the NRL trial game on February 26, which kicks off at 2pm.

Assistant Coach Stacey Jones, who has re-joined the club this season at its new base at Redcliffe, said the squad was looking good particularly with the addition of experienced halves Shaun Johnson and Ash Taylor.

“Obviously, I wasn’t

around last year but when games are in the balance you need your key players to step up and that comes with experience,” Jones said.

“We’ve got a couple of experienced halves – Sean and Ash – the growth of Chanel (Harris-Tavita) and obviously having Kodi (Nikorima) there too. It’s a really good balance in that group and a key part of the game we’ve got to get right.”

Johnson looks certain to wear the No.7 jersey, with the other three competing for No.6 and the bench utility role.

“Right now, we’re working through how we’re going to play footy and who’s playing in what position.

When a strong crew matters...

I guess we won’t be able to nail it down for certain until we’ve played trials and players put their hands up. Certainly, right now we’re thinking who could play where,” Jones said.

Before the February 26 trial at Moreton Daily Stadium, players including Nikorima and HarrisTavita, forward Jazz Tevaga and back rower Josh Curran will have the chance to impress during the NRL All Stars game in Sydney on February 12.

They will also play a trial game against the Storm on February 19 at Casey Fields, Victoria.

“It’s exciting for us to trial here (at Redcliffe)

because we’ve done all our preseason, it’s going to be our last hit-out and near-enough to our best possible squad that’s fit and healthy,” Jones said.

“It’s exciting that we’ll be able to play here where we’ve been based.”

Jones is hoping for a big crowd at Moreton Daily Stadium.

“We get quite a few people to watch our training.

Hopefully there will be a lot of expat Kiwis and locals that can get out and support this team because we feel this is our home now,” Jones said.

Captain Tohu Harris, who is recovering from a knee reconstruction, hopes to

make his playing return in mid-May and is working with the squad at training.

He’s feeling confident ahead of the season opener against the Dragons at Sunshine Coast Stadium on March 12.

“The team is flying around the field at the moment, everyone’s physically looking … certainly a lot better than we have in the last couple of years,” Harris said.

“Everyone’s putting careerbest numbers whether it’s conditioning or weights and that’s been very pleasing and we’re getting a lot of confidence out of that. It’s not going to decide results for us but will certainly help.”

A TEAM of Redcliffe Dolphins’ female rugby league players will get the chance to emulate the game’s pioneers as they begin their campaign in the Queensland Rugby League’s under-19s competition.

The Dolphins’ under-19s team were due to play their first trial last Friday against the Norths Devils at Bribie Island (after Moreton Daily News’ deadline) as they prepare to enter the Harvey Norman Cup under-19s competition.

If they turn to history, the young team has an obvious choice to encourage them – the 1975 Redcliffe Dolphins women’s senior team.

That side won their competition, and now the under-19s team will be the first senior Dolphins female team in many years.

The coach is former Dolphins’ Queensland Cup player Deon Bird, who had a long professional career in Australia and England.

He said numbers had been encouraging at training, but the team was always looking for more players.

“I am satisfied with how the team is going and has been training but we won’t be turning anyone away.”

He has a family link to the team.

“I’ve got three daughters so, I have been around female sport a lot and my eldest daughter is part of the team,” Bird said.

He may stay at that level for two years, before hopefully moving up to the A leagues then the MLB – a feat only 33 Australians have achieved.

“That’s the ultimate goal,” said the former Pine Hills and Windsor player, who has been at Padres for

two years. “The competition is pretty tough!”

Walmsley’s move follows the Reds’ appointment of David Lutz as a scout in Australia.

Trey Hendricks, the Reds’ director of international scouting, said on mbl.com being Brisbane based, Lutz was able to evaluate local players, without COVID travel restrictions.

Walmsley was one of four Padres’ named in the Under 18 Team Australia squad in February 2021 but unable to attend a camp in Canberra due to COVID. A second camp and World Baseball Softball Confederation U18 World Cup were

also victims of the pandemic and most of the squad aged out of Under 18s.

But, Brisbane Bandits invited the Under 19 Team Australia – which included Padres’ Joel Hogan, Miller Bell and Lachlan Wilson – to matches late last month.

Australia lost the threematch series but had valuable experience. Walmsley was unable to play having signed for Reds.

Shaun’s ready to race STORY NICK CROCKFORD

SHAUN Richardson is heading south this week for the start of a new racing challenge.

The Kippa-Ring driver, from Road Rage Industries, will be on the grid for round one of the ARG Series at Symmons Plains just outside Launceston.

It is Richardson’s first full season in the national Series after racing in a handful of rounds over the last three years.

He has also entered the TA2 Series, on Queensland and NSW tracks. Both series are set to be televised – ARG live on Channel 7, TA2 will be recorded.

The 53-year-old will be driving his Dodge Challenger, which started life as a Mustang but was rebodied at Road Rage Industries.

Richardson’s expectations are realistic being new to the competition but he knows the opposition will also be tough.

Last year’s winner Nathan Herne is back. Aaron Seton, son of two-time Australian Touring Car Champion Glenn has also entered. So too Jett Johnson, grandson of racing legend Dick Johnson – a five-time Australian Touring Car Champion and three-time winner at Bathurst.

“We’re new to it. New to the set-up,” Richardson said, “there’s lot of V8 Super Car teams running (in the ARG Series) now.

At the same time central defender Brodie Boyce, who also spent time on the

NORTH Lakes resident Josh Hands will next week start his assault on two world snooker titles.

The 16-year-old is in the World Snooker Federation (WSF) Junior (Under 18) Championship and the WSF Championships, being held back-to-back in the UK city of Sheffield the sport’s spiritual home.

As one of four Australians selected for the championships, Hands will miss the first three weeks of his Year 12 at North Lakes State College.

“They have all the infrastructure, all the data of the tracks we’re going to.

So, we’ve got to learn the tracks and learn the set up.

“I think at the beginning of the year we’ll be just nibbling in the top 10.

“Then hopefully by the time we’ve done a few

rounds, done more infrastructure in the car and got bit more knowledge about the car, we’ll be running in the top five.

“There’s quite a few young guys coming in, so that’s going to be good for the series and maybe a stepping-stone for them to

get into the V8s.”

Richardson may also cross the Pacific to race Stadium Trucks in Long Beach, California – if he can get a sponsor.

“That would cool. It’s a big opportunity. In stadium trucks I think we can win races, definitely.”

Boadie took the triple jump silver with pb of 9.63m and bronze in the high jump, javelin and had another pb of 4.39m for third place in the long jump.

Nine-wickets for Rafter BOWLER Elijah Rafter had match figures of nine wickets for 59 runs but could not help Peninsula avoid defeat in its Community Cricket Championship match against Coorparoo.

Coorparoo were dismissed for 104, Nick Turner took 4-10 and Rafter 4-29, before Peninsula fell for 66.

Redcliffe records fall at sprint meeting REDCLIFFE Leagues Swimming Club (RLSC) had five personal bests and three top 10 finishes at the Brisbane Sprint Championships on January 29-30.

Aurora also broke the Redcliffe Leagues Swimming Club’s backstroke record with 1 minute 1.58 seconds, again beating Kaelyn Hann’s record of 1 minute 4.33 seconds set on November 6, 2001.

REDCLIFFE swimmers dominated the top awards at the first Suttons Beach Pavilion Swim held on Australia Day. The event, hosted by Suttons Swim Group (SSG) Multisports, attracted 400 entries and there are plans for it to become an annual event.

Margate’s Andrew Affleck took out the men’s 4km race in a time of 57 minutes 53 seconds.

Sally Dymond, from Redcliffe won the women’s 4km swim in 1 hours 12 minutes 26 seconds.

The men’s 2km went to Nick Lane, from Redcliffe, in 26 minutes 29 seconds with Gemma Zaicek, from Highgate Hill, winning the

women’s race in 8 minutes 34 seconds.

There were also 1km races and a family fun inflatable swim.

SSG which has three swims each week and welcomes newcomers, organised the swims after the regular Australia Day family events were moved from Suttons Beach to Scarborough.

The Lakes FC has been drawn against Gatton Redbacks in the FFA Cup SEQ Round Two. The match will be at Kinsellas Sports Complex, date and time to be announced. The winner hosts FQPL1 side Souths in round three.

Power add hat-trick of signings PENINSULA Power has added more important pieces to its squad for the 2022 NPL Qld campaign, which gets under way this month.

Club captain Trent McEvoy has re-signed after an injury-hit 2021 season, along with defender Hayden McHenery and forward Brenton Fox. Fox, entering his fourth year at AJ Kelly Park, told Power Media it was a “special opportunity to win three (premierships) in a row.”

McHenery, who has won two premierships in two years at Power, said: “We also have an exciting new group, which will surprise a few teams this year.”

That was echoed by coach Aaron Philp. “We’ve had a bit of a turnover but have replaced really, really well,” he said.

The Redcliffe Padres’ player has signed with Cincinnati Reds and is “shut down” from competitive pitching until he joins the MLB (Major League Baseball) club.

That will be in April for extended spring training in Arizona. Until

then the (just turned) 17-year-old is following a Reds program at home.

“It’s a four-week block, six-days a week, one day off,” said Walmsley, “mostly fitness and then the (six-weeks spring) training will be more development.

“I’m actually feeling quite nervous at the moment. There’s going to be a lot of change, new people and a new culture to get used to.”
