New era in community news COMMUNITY newspapers have made a triumphant return to the whole Moreton Bay Region, with the launch of Moreton Daily News in southern and northern districts last week. It follows a successful year publishing Dolphins News in the eastern pocket, home delivering to residents on the Redcliffe peninsula, Deception Bay, North Lakes, Mango Hill and Griffin. Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) Chairman and publisher Shane Newcombe said Dolphins News would be rebranded in 2022
RETURNING IN 2022 This is the last edition of Dolphins News for 2021. We will return as Moreton Daily News in 2022, with the first edition for the year out on January 26. as part of the expansion and all three papers would be known as Moreton Daily News. They will publish fortnightly. “The name change reflects the papers’ connection with our online community news website, Moreton Daily, which we launched during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 to
give residents positive and useful community news,” Mr Newcombe said. “Our community newspapers have the same philosophy – delivering the good news you’ve been waiting for to your home. Moreton Daily News will be home delivered to 150,000 households in the north, south and eastern pockets. Mr Newcombe said while the newspapers would share a masthead and philosophy, they would publish content specific to their communities. They will be produced by team of experienced jour-
nalists and advertising consultants, who between them have more than a century of industry experience. Moreton Daily News will be home-delivered to readers for free. It is the perfect way for businesses to connect with residents. “Advertisers have been telling me they’ve missed that connection, particularly small businesses and tradespeople,” Advertising Manager Stacie Davey said. “In Moreton Daily News, they can choose from a range of display advertising options as well as our classifieds section.”

Region’s bid for city status
STORY NICK CROCKFORD MORETON Bay Regional Council will start the process to make the region a city following a vote during its final meeting for 2021. Council will write to Local Government Minister Steven Miles requesting he refer it to the Local Government Change Commission, which is the independent body responsible for assessing proposed changes to Queensland councils. Mayor Peter Flannery said a name change would remove the connotation of remoteness that came with the word ‘region’, as Council sought to put Moreton Bay City on the national and international map

Division 7 counting continues PREFERNCES hold the key to a result in the Moreton Bay Regional Council Division 7 by-election. Electoral Commission Queensland paused counting votes late last week, ahead of the deadline for postal votes on December 14. A spokesperson for the electoral commission said the result in the by-election could only be declared once the outcome was certain. “To achieve this, a full preference count must be undertaken to allocate the preferences of candidates,” the spokesperson said. “Due to the margin between candidates, this cannot be finalised until after the 10-day return period for postal ballots, which is Tuesday, 14 December.” The electoral commission received 3136 postal vote applications and 8611 people – or 32.95 percent of the electorate – had voted ahead of the official polling day on December 4. By December 10, votes had been counted for 63.1 percent of enrolled electors – 94.99 percent of them formal votes and 5.01 percent declared informal and therefore ineligible to be added to candidates’ tallies. At the time of publishing, former Pine Rivers Shire councillor Yvonne Barlow led the official first preference count, with 26.62 percent of votes, followed by Brett Hayes (22.48 percent), Dean Teasdale (16.10 percent), Ryan Bakker (15.86 percent), Ben Wood (13.39 percent) and Jacqui Findlay (5.55 percent).

Mayor Flannery said the plan was not a gimmick. “This is an opportunity for Moreton Bay City to identify where other regions in Australia have gone wrong in their planning, so that we can redefine what it means to be a modern city,” he said. “Specifically, this will involve two things: greening our region and rethinking planning in response to COVID-19. “So, we will enforce stronger environmental protection within all our planning frameworks to obligate developers to make Moreton Bay City greener as we grow and integrate nature within our communities.
“It also means moving away from the traditional CBD concept, because the coronavirus experience has proven it’s entirely possible to rethink the way we work, commute and enhance our lifestyle.” Moreton Bay City will not have a single business district, rather satellite CBDs centred on precincts of expertise – to harness and amplify the unique characteristics of existing communities. “The blueprint for this plan is already outlined in our Regional Economic Development Strategy 2020-41 which articulates growth strategies for our key priority industries: food and agribusiness, knowledge and innovation, advanced
manufacturing, and tourism,” Mayor Flannery said. “That means focussed agricultural investment in the north, new initiatives to drive innovation and technology uptake at the Petrie Mill site, supporting advanced manufacturing investment in our Brendale industrial precinct, retail opportunities around North Lakes, and developing the eco-tourism potential of our spectacular hinterland. “We’ve already got the ball rolling on this with the launch of our international ‘Invest Moreton’ campaign in November, targeting investors in key priority industries who want a first-mover advan- The result will be published on the tage,” he said. electoral commission website.

Shelter celebrates 50 years STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH VOLUNTEERS from Peninsula Animal Aid are celebrating a happy ‘tail’ of their own by marking 50 years of helping animals in need. Since its doors first opened in 1971, volunteers have helped thousands of stray and abandoned animals find loving homes, as well as reunite lost pets with their families. Peninsula Animal Aid (PAA) President Anne Denton said the not-for-profit organisation was vital to the Redcliffe community. “As an organisation, and a no-kill shelter, we offer a very valuable service to our community by rescuing animals in need and finding them a home where they will be well cared for and loved for the rest of their lives,” she said.
In the beginning, PAA went from working out of foster homes to having its own shelter in 1974. Betty and Lawrie Preston were considered the founders of the organisation. As volunteers began to help more animals, they outgrew their original Huntington St premises in Clontarf, prompting the then Redcliffe City Council to lease a new building at Duffield Rd, where the organisation has been since 1997. As a not-for-profit charity, PAA relies heavily on the generosity of people and businesses to keep its doors open. All shelter building maintenance, vet, medical, food and other costs are met solely by PAA through sponsorships, donations, fundraising and bequests. Many vets also assist by reducing their fees when appointments are needed.

Ms Denton said PAA would be lost without its dedicated team of volunteers. “We wouldn’t be able to do all the good work we achieve without our wonderful group of volunteers,” she said. “We are extremely grateful for the volunteers who work in the office, the kennel and cattery, who give
up their own time to care for the animals. “We also have a team of volunteers who come in on Saturday morning to assist with the running of the hydrobath. “For some of our volunteers, their commitment is 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week, and without their commitment, we would not
be able to survive as an animal rescue.” There are many ways the community can help PAA – volunteering, making a donation, becoming a sponsor or foster carer, supporting its hydrobath and other events, providing much-needed items or leaving bequest in your Will.
A NEW program to shred old mattresses will save almost 23 cubic metres of landfill space across the Moreton Bay Region and allow people to take their mattresses to the Redcliffe Transfer Station again. Councillor Karl Winchester (Div 6) said the Redcliffe transfer station had been unable to accept mattresses since mid-2019 due to the size of the bulky items. “This tender will see this important service return to Redcliffe, and address some of the issues we’ve seen in our community around some people doing the wrong thing illegally dumping mattresses,” Cr Winchester said. Under the program, CDS Recycling will shred the mattresses and collect the steel for recycling. It currently costs Council about $6 million a year to dispose of mattresses in landfill, but the shredding deal will slash costs to about $3.5 million. Councillor Sandra Ruck (Div 5) said the program would mean people could dispose and recycle their mattresses together with e-waste, timber and metal at Redcliffe free of charge.

Deal to continue driving tourism STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE organisation that helped turn Moreton Bay into a $1 billion tourism powerhouse will guide the region’s destination management, tourism services and events for the next three years. Moreton Bay Regional Council voted unanimously to award the contracts to Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) at its general meeting on December 8. MBRIT is the publisher of Dolphins News. The tender process was overseen by an independent probity advisor. Mayor Peter Flannery has congratulated MBRIT but said the task ahead was not for the fainthearted. “Every decision we make now will determine our region’s success when the influx of international tourists descends on Brisbane for the 2032 Olympics,” he said. “Awarding these contracts is the start of an Olympic journey to make Moreton Bay an unmissable destination in our own right with new and exciting experiences.” “Before COVID hit, we were enjoying a golden era in tourism that was tipped to keep shining for years to come - with MBRIT successfully growing our tourism economy to $1 billion and overseeing an incredible increase in visitation numbers of around 4.5 million tourists a year.” MBRIT secured both the ‘Destination Management
and Tourism Services’ and the ‘Regional Awareness, Price and Attractive Lifestyle’ contracts. Mayor Flannery said this would ensure the continuity of iconic events such as the Moreton Bay Food & Wine Festival, Kids Fest, Caboolture Festival, and many more. “In fact, we’ll be increasing the number of events to bring more vibrancy to our region, with 20 new smaller events to be delivered in towns and suburbs across the region,” he said. “Personally, I think our greatest offering is our natural environment, and we will need MBRIT’s strategic oversight to realise the full potential of this enormous opportunity.” MBRIT Chairman Shane Newcombe said there would be an increased focus on destination marketing to attract more visitors to the region, supporting local tourism operators and businesses. He said the contracts aligned with Council’s Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS). “During the course of the previous contract with council, MBRIT has proven it delivers. These new contracts give us the opportunity to continue that work and help drive our region’s COVID-19 recovery, while providing the events that bring the community together and make us feel good,” he said. The contracts are for three years, with the option for another three years.

Love in the air for JPY show STORY JODIE POWELL HAVING spent much of the past year without performing live, legendary singer John Paul Young is itching to hit the road in 2022. With a show booked for the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre on March 24, Young is looking forward to being in front of a live audience. “I’ve just had a small taste of it with the Apia Good Times tour, which we had to put on hold since May,” he said. Young’s still putting the finishing touches to his JPY 50 Years Young – The Anniversary Tour, but said the first part of the show would be chronological, taking the audience through stories of his early childhood in Glasgow and the family’s move down under, where they landed on Australia Day 1962.

Tickets are $65, or $60 concession redcliffeentertainmentcentre. com.au “My Dad didn’t have a lot of faith in the Britain of the 1950s,” Young recalled. “He couldn’t see much opportunity for the kids and decided to make a leap. “He was going to go to Canada, but Mum said ‘no, it’s too bloody cold’.” Young said it was a series of coincidences that led him to record his first hit, Pasadena, with Simon Napier Bell. “We were in a band called Elmtree and after we finished our sets at gigs we would watch the next band
and Pasadena was one of the songs they (Pyramid) used to play. “They recorded it and the record company didn’t like the result – all of a sudden it was me.” Young said he never tired of his material because it felt fresh each time he performed. “There’s so many moods on the stage and sometimes one song will go through two or three different moods,” he said. WHILE Christmas lights may be a colourful source of joy, they can also prove to be deadly, according to firefighters. With decorations such as sparkling lights, tinsel and candles on display in millions of homes, the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) wants people to make fire safety a priority to help avoid severe damage, burns injuries or worse. December is always a busy time for firefighters, with crews attending more than 146 structural fires in the last month of last year. QFES Commissioner Greg Leach is urging Queenslanders to make sure their decorations are safe to use, as it only takes a small flame to set a home ablaze. “A house fire is a lifechanging and devastating experience regardless of
the time of year, but we especially do not want to see a preventable tragedy happen this Christmas,” he said. “We’re calling for everyone to do some simple checks to ensure their home and family are safe. “As you’re getting your decorations out of storage, make sure they’re in good condition and discard any lights or electrical equipment that’s not up to standard. “Be on the lookout for any power cables that are frayed or kinked and avoid placing electrical items close to flammable objects like furniture and curtains. “Only use decorations outside where they have been specifically designed for outdoor use. Indoor lights simply aren’t made to withstand the elements and can pose a serious fire risk under the wrong conditions. “Lights and candles should be placed in safe locations and never left unattended, especially while your family

The digeridoo was crafted and painted by Michael Connolly, an Aboriginal artist and proud descendant of the Kullilla Tribe from the Thargomindah and Eulo region and the Muruwari People from Goodooga and Brewarrina region of north-west New South Wales. Mr Warner told the story of a young man’s initiation and spoke about the journey we all take in life. “We all have a journey, we all have that journey in life just like the New Zealand Warriors – they have a path, they have a journey. Hopefully, they win the
NRL one day … this year, hopefully,” he said. “They’re going to go across many of our countries, many of our states and I feel it’s my (role) on behalf of my people to bless the New Zealand Warriors on that journey.” The AUAHA – Maori Cultural Performing Troupe delivered a Pohiri – a Maori welcome in response, and both groups performed ceremonial dances and songs. Mayor Peter Flannery spoke about the strong link between Australia and New Zealand. “Council has entered into a partnership with the Warriors which will see
our destination and investments brands beamed to a New Zealand audience. P.10 // NEWS STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE upgrade of the Park ‘n’ Ride at Mango Hill Station has reached another milestone with the release of the proposed designs, which include an additional 280 car spaces and Kiss ’n’ Ride improvements. Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts Paul Fletcher said the $10 million upgrade would improve congestion by providing greater rail access to commuters. “The Morrison Government is getting on with delivering infrastructure projects that improve congestion and safety for commuters across Australia, making it easier for them to move around our capital cities and ensuring they get home quickly and safely,” Mr Fletcher said. Deputy Premier and Member for Murrumba Steven Miles said the upgrade would more than double the park ’n’ ride capacity for Mango Hill commuters. “The new Mango Hill Station parking facility will add an extra 280 spaces to the existing 220 spaces,” Mr Miles said. “The land currently used as an informal car park next to Mango Hill Station

Pedestrian connectivity to and from the station will also be
improved, as will the safety of customers through extra lighting and CCTV.” Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said upgrades like this had provided customers with more than 1250 additional spaces across the southeast. “Over the past year, additional park ’n’ ride spaces have opened at Carseldine, Darra, Ebbw Vale, Geebung, Lawnton,
Ormeau, Salisbury, Varsity Lakes and Virginia train stations. “More than 3200 new park ’n’ ride spaces will be delivered over the next four years as part of the $160 million park ’n’ ride upgrade program, which adds to the over 32,600 spaces available to customers across the network.” Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth said: “Pedestrian connectivity
to and from the station will also be improved, as will the safety of public transport customers, with lighting and CCTV also featuring in the upgrade”. “The number of accessible parking bays near the Mango Hill Station will also be increased.” The $160 million Park ’n’ Ride upgrade program, includes $60 million from the Federal Government. A design layout of the
new park ’n’ ride facility has been released to the community, who can contact the project team for further information or to provide feedback. Detailed design is expected to be completed by early next year with construction to follow later in 2022, weather and construction scheduling permitting.

Early warning system to save lives THE winners of the Moreton Bay Region’s Youth Innovation Excellence award had plenty to celebrate on the night of the awards at the Eatons Hill Hotel. Murrumba State Secondary College students Tiarna McElligott and Owen Ventre had just finished dinner and mock awards at their Year 12 formal when Dean of Year 12 Nic Gault announced they had won a very real gong at the Moreton Bay Region

Business Excellence and Innovation Awards. Unable to attend both events, Tiarna and Owen chose their Year 12 formal, sending teacher Rhiann Nelson to event in their place. The pair said they were stunned to win, having claimed the same category in 2019 with their invention, IntelVest, which measures firefighters’ physical distress on the job. “When we looked at Tiarna’s 2019 application and
what we had done (since I joined her to work on the project last year), the 2021 nomination showed how far we had come,” Owen said. Tiarna said the evolution came after consultation with firefighters. “The initial idea was to monitor the dangerous gases in the air around firefighters, but after talking to them we found exertion was a bigger problem.” Owen said being able to identify a firefighter suffering early signs of exertion
was crucial, because if they collapsed on the job colleagues would be diverted from a fire to rescue them. When a firefighter is suffering from exertion, IntelVest alerts crew outside, who can direct the affected firefighter to return outside where they can receive early treatment. “We’ve talked to people in the medical industry and they said we need an eight to 10 minute warning of exertion before someone suffers a heart attack,” Tiarna said.
Players give lesson in league PUPILS at Southern Cross Catholic College Woody Point campus had a rugby league masterclass from some of the best in the business when Warriors players visited on December 1. Wet weather forced the session inside, but the children, from Prep through to Year 6, were still able to

YOUNG people at Redcliffe Area Youth Space have been busy handcrafting Christmas cards for residents of Azure Blue retirement village for Christmas. It is an activity staff have co-ordinated in previous years to bring generations together and give young people a boost. Redcliffe Area Youth Space (RAYS) Quality and business manager Kathryn Kenny said it was important young people felt they were part of the community. “If this community is stronger and more connected, then it’s more interdependent rather than creating independent individuals,” Ms Kenny said. “Often older people are quite scared of younger people as they start to feel a bit more vulnerable. (Through the program) they can see young people have something positive

A small group of young people will visit the village to deliver the cards. “It can be tricky for some young people who have never had family Christmas traditions to be able to engage in that,” Ms Kenny said “For some of them, there’s a lot of pride in just creat-
ing something and feeling they’ve got a useful skill. For others, it’s a sense of surprise that they can do something that can make someone else feel good. “They are so often told they don’t have value or are useless. A small thing can be the beginning of knowing they have value, worth and can make someone else feel better.” There are other benefits for the young artists. “The very nature of doing an artistic endeavour is that is it something that will engage young people who may not come and chat with us – they will just sit down and get involved and you start to learn their story,” she said. Redcliffe Area Youth Space runs a skateboard and scooter shop, where young people learn retail skills. Proceeds help fund its programs and there is plenty of stock available in the lead-up to Christmas.

Forty years of service to others
A PASSION for helping others and raising money for charity has seen one Redcliffe community group stand the test of time to mark an major milestone. Members from the ESA (Education Service Association) Redcliffe branch have celebrated 40 years serving the Moreton Bay community. President Jenny Hendriks said she was inspired to start an ESA branch in Moreton Bay after seeing all the good work the group did at another branch.

“I joined ESA in 1979 when I was in Bundaberg, but when I moved back to Redcliffe that’s when I got some friends and family together and started this branch,” she said. “It’s a really worthwhile organisation as it provides our group with lots of social
activities, access to education with our guest speakers, and the chance to raise money to help local charities. “I always like to say we put the fun in fundraising.” The group has raised money for the local oncology unit, as well as larger organisations such as the Leukemia Foundation and the Cancer Council. The group currently has 17 members but would like to welcome more and possibly start a new branch. REDCLIFFE Sunrise Rotary Club is helping transform Moreton Bay one oyster shell at a time. The Club’s Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group is collecting oyster shells from Morgans Seafood at Scarborough and working with environmental notfor-profit Ozfish to regenerate oyster reefs in Moreton Bay. Vice president Colin Scobie said the club, which housed its blue collection bins at the Clontarf waste facility thanks to Moreton Bay Regional Council, hoped to expand the program to include other wholesalers and restaurants. From Clontarf, the shells are taken to the Port of Brisbane, where they sit for six months to ensure they are bio-secure before being washed and put into special cages and then placed in designated regeneration areas in the bay by Ozfish. The Central Moreton Bay chapter hopes to restore 100ha of shellfish reef over the next 10 years. Mr Scobie said oysters were a natural filtration system to improve water quality. “It stops the shells going to landfill and it restores the fish habitat,” Mr Scobie said. He said the shell-filled baskets were placed where oysters grew to encourage oyster spat to create new colonies.

Jeanette Morgan wants people to fit EV labels. important for safety. “These vehicles c a n present a hazard to emergency services d u r i n g c r a s h e s and rescue situations, so the labels allow responders to quickly identify if there’s an electric component and use specific safety procedures,” she said. “Police have been enforcing use of the labels since the beginning of October by educating motorists, but from January 1 they will issue $137.05 fines and deduct one demerit point.” Ms Ritchie said RACQ had free labels for members.

ELECTRIC and hybrid vehicle owners have until January 1 to attach warning labels to their cars or risk fines and demerit point deductions. Jeanette Morgan from Village Nissan said the compulsory new labels, introduced in October, had taken many by surprise. “Our customers are aware that you can’t touch things in the engine of the vehicle, but many are not aware they must now be fitted with labels,” she said. “So we’re putting labels on any of the cars that come in for a service.” The labels must be fitted to front and rear number plates of electric and hybrid vehicles built after January 2019 and other vehicles modified to be electric or hybrid after the same date. RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said the labels were

AN early gift from the Redcliffe Central Lions Club has given Elaine Farrell a new sense of freedom. The Clontarf resident received a Lions Hearing Dog last month and already she and Peppi have forged a strong bond. Ms Farrell has a cochlear implant in one ear and a hearing aid in the other, and specially trained Peppi will help her hear sounds
she might otherwise miss. “He’s making a big difference to my life,” Ms Farrell said. “I’ve already taken him on the bus – it’s wonderful to have him around.” Lions Hearing Dog trainer Lauren Dolman said Peppi would alert Ms Farrell to various sounds around her home such as knocks on her door or a smoke alarm sounding. “Peppi physically touches her and takes her to the
sound,” Ms Dolman said. “If it’s the smoke alarm, he touches then drops to alert her.” Ms Dolman said Peppi, who had taken about six months to train, would also accompany Ms Farrell when she was out and about in the community, providing a visual clue to the people around her. “It’s amazing how much a dog can provide visibility to someone who’s invisible.” Ms Dolman said each
hearing dog was a gift from Lions to the recipient. “It wouldn’t be possible without the support from local Lions clubs.” Redcliffe Central Lions Club president Ted Heyes said Peppi was the third dog the club had sponsored. “It makes a big difference to people who are hard of hearing and it certainly is a lifestyle change,” My Heyes said. lionshearingdogs.com.au

A NEW TV series is taking people behind the scenes of Redcliffe charity ROPE. The ground-breaking series gives ROPE participants the chance to showcase the things they do and the programs they attend. ROPE provides support to people living with intellectual disabilities by empowering personal development with information, education and

director Aaron Lucas suggested making it a regular gig. “Brochures were getting boring, so we decided to do a video,” Mr Bleakley (above right) explained. “Then Aaron said to me one day ‘what about we do something like a TV program?’. “It’s wildly different to what the disability sector has done before. “We’re getting in excess of 2500 viewers a month – and
they’re not just the families of ROPE participants,” Mr Bleakley said. He said working with the team at Trending Media had been a joy. “I give them the content and they do the creative aspect. “The way they interact with our participants is great – they bring out the best in them.” Each episode is hosted by ROPE participants, who introduce segments from ROPE reporters
highlighting activities and programs. “It’s been really cool to see them grow and develop – they’ve taken on those roles really well and one of the team, Cameron, is now doing work experience at Trending Media. “The plan was always that we would start filming with four hosts and then get others involved. “They’re loving every minute of it.”

Serge passes on the baton STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE man who has been at the helm of Community Bank Margate for more than 13 years has retired, drawing pride from what he and his team have achieved but also confidence in the future. Serge Paggiaro was a founding member of the bank, which is a Bendigo Bank franchise and was started by locals when all the banks in Margate closed. “The bank opened in 2005, December. That was a big deal for us because we had been working for about three years prior in getting it going and establishing it,” Mr Paggiaro said. “Basically, every bank in Margate closed up shop and our president back then Bill Hoogwaerts … he and someone else wanted to open a bank. They approached a credit union and someone suggested Bendigo because Bendigo had a franchise model. They met with Bendigo and it went from there. It’s worked out well.” Community need was the

driving force behind the bank’s launch and it is still core to how it operates. “We have over the past 16 years, given away $800,000 to local charities and groups. That’s something we do each and every year. We have a series of grants we hand out. We award a scholarship each year, $2500 to a student,” he said. Novel way to foster passion STORY KYLIE KNIGHT CREATING a community of readers and breathing new life into read books is driving Alea and Andrew Cadzow, whose business The Book Bucket is thriving on the Redcliffe peninsula. It opened in September and is the couple’s third outlet, selling and trading secondhand books. The other stores are at Bribie Island and Caloundra. Mrs Cadzow said the outlets operated independently, reflecting their own communities. “The stock, genres, staff and trade rules are all 100 per cent locally grown by the demand and supply,” she said. “That’s how the Redcliffe store came about. We had so many people from the Peninsula travelling to other stores to do bulk trading.” Customers can pop in and buy a book to keep forever or give to someone, or they

the best talent has prompted RMT to pay its cast for this show as well as the band and orchestra. “RMT are absolutely thrilled to be bringing Priscilla to Redcliffe – after 18 months of COVID restrictions and lockdowns, what audiences crave right now are feel-good, colourful and upbeat productions – Priscilla ticks all the boxes,” Johns said. “With more glitz and glamour than you’ve seen on stage before, this hilarious musical will feature show-stopping dance routines, a dazzling array of eye-popping costumes and a scintillating soundtrack full of your favourite dance-floor classics including Hot Stuff, It’s Raining Men, I Will Survive, Finally and many more.” It was written by Stephen Elliot and Allan Scott, with
musical arrangements and orchestrations by Stephen ‘Spud’ Murphy, and developed for the stage and original direction by Simon Phillips. Johns wants audiences to enjoy the feel-good atmosphere from the moment they arrive at the theatre. “They can expect to have a lot of fun. It’s a party,” she said. “We always provide a wow factor in our major productions – we’ve had (characters) flying, a car on stage and for this one we’ll have a bus.” RMT has sourced spectacular costumes and sets, including the bus, from CLOC Musical Theatre in Melbourne which is renowned for providing the best quality. “They have a massive team of behind them and a big workshop where they build and design sets and costumes. Their costumes
are incredible,” Johns said. “We had to have amazing costumes and we needed to have the bus.” The cast of 22 will be supported by about 80 people behind the scenes, a team of 10-12 people in costuming alone. The original movie won an Oscar for best costume design, so there are high expectations. Johns said a box of 60 costumes arrived last week and she was in the process of planning costume changes for the show. “It’s a truly iconic Australian musical with great social messages about inclusivity. It’s a snapshot in time, and certainly not representative of how we are now,” she said. “The musical has been instrumental in bringing that to the forefront.”

GIVING loved ones the gift of greenery this Christmas is the perfect way to add colour, life and even a sense of fun to their home or garden. We chatted with Redcliffe Garden Centre’s Tylor Elmsley and Kirsten Kemp about options for green and brown thumbs of all ages. The centre has a range of flowering and fruiting plants, which are bursting with the colours of Christmas. “The vincas we get this time of year are in reds and whites, the foliage is green so they’re perfect to put as a little centrepiece on your table. They can take the full sun and a bit of shade,” Mr Elmsley said. “They’re also quite tough, so they’re great gift for someone who’s not much of a gardener who just wants a pop of colour in the garden. “The ornamental chillis (we have) are great because the fruit changes colour, so you get an assortment of different colours in the same plant. You’ll get reds, purples, yellows, oranges, even green fruit as well. It looks almost like a little Christmas bush and you can also pick it and eat from it, so it’s a great gift for someone.” Succulents also make great presents because they are so easy to propagate and are a gift that keeps giving. You can buy them grouped together and arranged in pots or bowls, as single plants
or you can create a living masterpiece yourself. If you’re looking for a versatile flowering plant, it is hard to look past gerberas, which are now in full bloom. “They’re a nice little pot that you can bring inside and have on the table,” Mr Elmsley said. “Once they finish flowering, just pop them out in the garden and they do very well out there.” Euphorbia white sparkle is also stunning in summer. “It’s just a little shrub that’s covered in tiny white flowers that look like snow. People can plant them at the base of a larger plant, so it looks like a cushiony base. They flower for quite a lot of the year and they’re super tough,” Mr Elmsley said. “They’re perennials, so prune them back, fertilise them and they’ll keep flowering.” If you’re keen to gift a plant with wow factor, Redcliffe Garden Centre has a selection of hanging baskets and balls, and bowls packed with colour and variety. They have been carefully
crafted by ‘Christmas elves’ Raylee Williams and Kirsten Kemp, as have fairy gardens for little green thumbs. Ms Williams is thinking of giving one to her nieces. A fairy garden is a present you can buy as a complete package or you can buy all the elements and make it yourself, or make it with your special little person to foster an early love of gardening. So, why are plants great gifts? “I think everyone just enjoys having a plant in their home, whether it’s a little tiny one in their kitchen or in their bathroom. I think most people just enjoy having some kind of greenery in their house,” Ms Williams said. “It’s a bit more thoughtful as well, rather than just a gift card. Something that gives life and happiness to people.” And for those worried about killing their gift before they have the chance to hand it over? “My advice would be to get it a week or two before Christmas, ask the people at the nursery how to care of it,” Mr Elmsley said. “If it’s something like a succulent, it will need minimal care anyway, but if it does need a bit more care try your hardest to make it look the best you can before you give it to the person.”

Lamb leg roast with orange glaze 1. To make the glaze:
In a medium saucepan add the marmalade, cinnamon, rosemary sprigs, orange juice, garlic, pinch of salt and red wine vinegar and cook until reduced and slightly thickened.
2. Preheat the oven to 200C. Season lamb leg generously with salt
and pepper, arrange orange slices on top of lamb, drizzle with olive oil and place in a roasting pan covered with foil. Bring oven temperature down to 180C and roast lamb for approximately 1 hour 30 minutes for medium (internal temperature should reach 56-60C, approx 26 minutes per 500g).
3. Twenty minutes before the end of cooking time, remove foil and pour orange glaze over lamb and baste until the lamb is done. While the lamb is cooking, prepare minted peas.

WITH holidays coming, and already here for some, I wanted to use the column this week to encourage you all to get out and about and explore the wonderful area we've got right on our doorstep. Something I noticed not long after I purchased the shop here was that I'd never realised just how many people came to the Moreton Bay Region and particularly the peninsula, for day trips, weekends and holidays. This made me recognise how much I took for granted living in such a beautiful area and also that I'd never truly appreciated how fortunate my mates and I were to grow up here. Having always had a love of the outdoors and the water, I've got countless memories of things I've seen and experienced that I'd never have had if I'd been sitting at home looking at a screen. Dolphins jumping and turning somersaults, dugong, turtles, stingrays, a myriad of birdlife, fish and sharks are some of the sights we've all got access to from land and that those not fortunate enough to reside in our region, will pay handsomely to see. Head down to the sandflats for a walk through the water or out amongst one of the many rocky outcrops around the peninsula and take the time to really look at what's right underneath your feet. Taking kids to these locations can keep them entertained for hours as they invariably see much more than we adults

do. Trapped fish waiting for the tide to free them, crabs, octopus, worms, slugs, jellyfish etc all swimming around in usually crystal clear rock pools are all interesting to the little ones. So, these holidays, slow down, take your time and get out there and appreciate what we've got right here. You could do a lot worse than sparking an interest and a love and appreciation of the outdoors that could last your kids for life. It's right here under our noses. Slow down, relax, and enjoy your holidays. Thanks for reading again, and remember;

FISHING REPORT • Bait is increasing after the rain, with our summer pelagics starting to appear underneath them. • Summer whiting are still patchy but the results are there for those willing to put in the time and cover the ground with quite a few fish in the mid to high thirties and several around the 40cm mark. • Flathead around the peninsula. • Squire and snapper on the inshores, off the rocky points and the occasional fish off the jetties. • School mackerel becoming more consistent on the inshore reefs, jetties and also further afield in the bay for the boaties. • Mangrove Jack are firing with a couple of nice fish well into the forties. • Plenty of mud and sand crabs on the move in Bramble Bay, Deception Bay and in the rivers and creeks.

ANOTHER of our favourite festive seafoods are bugs. Not the flying kind, but rather the Moreton Bay bug and the Balmain bug. These animals are more commonly called slipper lobsters in other parts of the world. The Balmain bug tends to be broader and flatter than the Moreton Bay bug. Balmain bugs extend from about Bundaberg south to the NSW/Victoria border, while Moreton Bay bugs are abundant in offshore waters along the entire Queensland coast. There are two species of Moreton Bay bug that are sold together – the “mud bug” and the “reef bug”. There is also more than one species of Balmain bug. Mud bugs are generally more abundant in waters between 10 and 30m deep, while reef bugs are generally more abundant in depths between 40 and 50m. Moreton Bay bugs are relatively short-lived, quickgrowing and quick-maturing. The lifespan is up to four years for the mud bug and eight years for the reef bug. They mature after about one or two years. Females usually spawn twice during the summer, with about three months between spawning events. After hatching, bugs have a type of larvae called a phyllosoma larvae and these larvae typically associate with
DR DAZZA jellyfish. They are thought to possibly use jellyfish for food, transport and protection. Bugs are generally active at night, which is when they feed, and mostly stay buried in the sediment during the day. Burying is their main method of avoiding predators. They feed on a range of other seabed invertebrates including mollusc such as saucer scallops. Unfortunately, Moreton Bay bugs are rarely encountered by anglers. The only effective way of catching them is through trawling. They do not readily enter any baited traps or pots. Despite their name, while they are caught in Moreton Bay, it is not an important production location for them. The waters off Townsville and Gladstone are two of the more important areas for their capture. Given their high value for well over a decade, there has been substantial interest in farming them but farmed supply remains limited.

Christmas 2021 message With the end of the year almost upon us it’s a good time to reflect on the year that has been. To describe 2021 as another life-changing year for most people is not a stretch. There have been so many moments of hope but this has also been punctuated by worry, stress and fear. In one big respect we can consider ourselves so lucky. Compared to the rest of the world, our region in South East Queensland (at least up to this point) has faired better than most. Getting onto property. From a residential property market point of view, the economic impact of super low interest rates and low-stock availability has seen house prices sky rocket in our region. New sales price records have become the norm. I wake up almost every morning pinching myself; the growth this year has been phenomenal and beyond most people’s wildest imaginations. For those that own property, consider yourself fortunate. For those that own multiple properties, it’s been a bit like winning the lottery. But for every winner there are others for whom the boom in property prices has not delivered the same joy. I genuinely feel for first home buyers who have been saving for years only to see prices rocket out of reach in a matter of months. I feel for tenants. Rents continue to rise and wages growth has not followed. We are seeing people economically forced out of homes that they can no longer afford to rent. For some the struggle to pay rent means doing without even the basics.

Stone’s the hard man for Dolphins THE Dolphins NRL franchise has secured hard-hitting Parramatta Eels’ forward Ray Stone for its entry to the NRL competition. Stone will leave the Eels at the end of season 2022 after being targeted by Dolphins’ head coach Wayne Bennett. He has agreed to terms on a two-year deal with the Dolphins, lining him up to be part of the new club’s inaugural seasons of 2023 and 2024.

the type of player we are looking for,” Reader said. “He is one of the most feared defenders in the NRL and when we sat down to talk about recruitment, Ray Stone was one of the first players that Wayne Bennett spoke about. “Ray has gained some good NRL experience with the Eels and also covers the hooker position. “We look forward to him joining the Dolphins when
we begin pre-season training in November next year.” Stone becomes the second current NRL player to commit to the Dolphins after the signing of State of Origin second rower Felise Kaufusi. The Dolphins are the first new franchise admitted to the NRL since 2007 and will play their first game in March 2023.

Padres‘ final hopes dented by Demons REDCLIFFE Padres found the Demons too hot to handle in last week’s women’s grand final at Talobilla Park. The visitor’s gun pitcher Sam Sullivan threw a faultless game as Narangba
ran out 17-0 winners. Padres still took credit for their efforts with Kate Oppatt having a “great outing on the hump” and Kirsty Dyson, at shortstop, bravely saved several runs.

Nate races to Winter Series NATE Wood, pictured above, has finished his 2021 season on the winner’s podium in Bundaberg. The nine-year-old from Woody Point took the speedway go karts Winter Series with dominating drives throughout. He finished second, first and second in his three heats, starting from position two twice and from fifth in the final heat. That gave him second place on the starting grid for the feature race where he went straight into the lead and was never caught. The Winter Series is usually over three monthly meetings, but was disrupted by the weather this year. Nate adds it to the annual Des Carsburg Memorial Cup sub-junior which he won at Nudgee last month.

REDCLIFFE Leagues Softball Association was in the pink earlier this month in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA). Players wore pink in a special fundraiser to help the BCNA inform, support, connect and represent all Australians affected by breast cancer. Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian women. More than 20,000 women are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year as well as over 170 men. Power sign more players PENINSULA Power has continued its recruitment drive for the 2022 NPL Queensland season. Former Brisbane Roar duo Solomon Weldemarian and Harry Talbot are among the latest newcomers to the premiers’ squad. Weldemarian, 19, is a highly-rated forward who was born on Thursday Island and lived in the Netherlands Midfielder Talbot, who missed part of last season through injury, captained the Roar Youth team. Brodie Boyce, a central defender, is also ex-Brisbane Roar but has joined Power from fellow NPL side Sunshine Coast Wanderers. The former Redcliffe resident will be in Melbourne in a key role as Chief Umpire of the first Grand Slam tournament of 2022. Mrs Jenkins handles the administration and appointments of around 400 match officials which are needed for the event which which dates back to 1905. Then each day, from January 17-30, she will be in the Chief Umpire’s room at
Melbourne Park monitoring matches. “We look at them on screens, but there’s no time to actually watch the tennis,” Mrs Jenkins said. “we’re actually watching the officials.” It will be her third year in the role having been appointed in 2019 as the Australian Open’s first female Chief Umpire. Golden start for Grace at state titles GRACE swimmers Max Cunningham and Olivia Smith each won medals on the opening days of the Queensland Championships at Chandler. Both were selected for the Brisbane Relay team. Max’s team won gold in the freestyle and medley relays while Olivia collected a bronze medal. The Brisbane Boys relay team also broke a record set in 2009 by three seconds with Max swimming a 26.52-second leg of the 50m freestyle. He also won an individual silver medal in the longer 200m freestyle event. Ten members of Rothwell-based Grace Swimming qualified for individual events at the week-long championships in Brisbane Aquatic Centre. They are Ebony Campbell (3 events), Max Cunningham (8), Lauren Dymond (1), Soya Foroush (1), Keenan Martin (1), Elailah Rodd (5), Alia Shaw (5), Lily Smith (5), Olivia Smith (5). Hannah’s four-some start HANNAH Tretheway has made a superb start to her career with Hantokan Judo Club. The eight-year-old from Scarborough has won two gold, one silver and one bronze medal from the four competitions she has entered. The most recent was in November when she won gold in the Girls’ Under 26kg division at the South Queensland Regional Judo
competition at Spring Hill. “Judo is fun and I’ve made lots of new friends in the class,” Hannah said. I enjoy practicing the throws and it feels good when I do them in competition.” “I like training and competing and want to keep improving.” Hannah started judo three years ago with Hantokan Judo Club, in Redcliffe PCYC and was
recently graded to her yellow-orange belt, the fifth belt for juniors. She trains one night a week and combines judo with playing cricket and soccer. Hardman, undefeated with 12 wins from 12 fights, also holds the IBF Australasian Middleweight title and Australian title. Online boxing records list the fight date as Wednesday April 6, but the venue has yet to be revealed. MORETON Bay Raptors are celebrating a season of firsts in Gridiron Queensland. This year Raptors/Spartans Men and Mixed teams reached semi-finals for the first time and Juniors made the Sunbowl final. Raptors/Spartans Juniors went down 28-12 to Gold Coast Stingrays on Saturday, but it took little
shine off an excellent year. They reached the Sunbowl with a 26-6 victory over Logan Bears thanks to an opening quarter, 15-yard touchdown from running back Kazioa Newick-Matthews Quarter-back Tom Huber fired a long touchdown pass to wide receiver Newick-Matthews before Raptors/Spartans took control in the last two quarters. Head coach Vinny Tupi
said it was a “solid performance across all facets of the game” with “pressure and control” sealing their place in the Sunbowl final. The men’s team went down 31-18 to Brisbane Rhinos in their semi-final with Tupi describing it as “one of our best games of the season”. It was only in the last five minutes that Rhinos ensured victory in a closefought match full of “terrif-
ic textbook plays from both teams” said Tupi. Growing support for new open water swim ENTRIES are rolling in from across Queensland for the first Suttons Beach Pavilion Swim on Australia Day next year. The event, run by SSG (Suttons Swim Group) Multisports Club, will feature 4km, 2km, 1km races as well as a family fun inflatables swim, at 6am. Hardman sights on Zerafa ISAAC Hardman, pictured, has the Christmas present he wanted – a fight against Michael Zerafa. Hardman’s manager Eddie Kocwa said the middleweights are to meet in April in a bout which may be a stepping-stone to a world title shot. Redcliffe-born Hardman, who grew up in Deception Bay and Caboolture, called for the fight within seconds of stopping Adam Stowe earlier this month.
