A NORTH Lakes make-up artist has saved the day for a bride left stranded when her hair and make-up artist failed to show on her big day.

Natalie Holland had booked her beauty package almost a year in advance, but sister Samantha Van Strien said the bridal party began to panic when the artists had not arrived half an hour after the appointed time.

“Tensions were already so high as we had been constantly watching the press conference and monitoring the COVID-19 cases hoping this wedding would be able to take place,” Ms Van Strien said.

A call to the make-up artist revealed her car had broken down and she was trying to get someone to replace her and she also could not reach the hair stylist.

With her sister inconsolable, Ms Van Strien turned to a Facebook page for help.

“I had been a member of the North Lakes Community page for many years and had known the page had been helpful in times of need, but I wasn’t sure how successful we would be, considering we needed a make-up artist right there and then,” she said.

“We had many suggestions, but no one could come out to us immediately.”

Meanwhile, Primal Beauty owner Jodi Jeyes returned home from an hour-long session at the gym to find her phone lit up with alerts.

“My sister had tagged me in the posts, and then my husband said I should call and see if I could help because I didn’t have appoint-

ments booked until later in the day,” Ms Jeyes said.

With time of the essence and five people needing hair and make-up miracles, Ms Jeyes headed straight to Murrumba Downs.

“At that stage I didn’t know how I was going to get five lots of make-up and hair done in three-and-ahalf hours,” Ms Jeyes said.

“They were definitely very

flustered when I got there.”

Fortunately, a hairdresser also saw the post, so Ms Jeyes was able to focus on make-up for Ms Holland, her three bridesmaids and her mum.

“I don’t know what would have happened if we didn’t have Jodi, but I am almost certain we wouldn’t have had a wedding,” Ms Van Strien said.

STORY JODIE POWELL PREPARATION is one of the best ways to weather the coming storm season according to Moreton Bay Region State Emergency Service Acting Controller Trevor Smith.

Mr Smith said basic home maintenance would give residents across the region the best chance of minimising damage to their properties.

Many of the calls the region’s seven operational groups receive in the wake

of storms relate to damage caused by blocked gutters and poorly maintained roofs, Mr Smith said.

“Now’s the time to clean your gutters, flush out downpipes so rain can flow through and check that drains are clear of leaves,” Mr Smith said.

He said clearing rubbish would also minimise damage caused by flying debris in gusty conditions.

“It’s also worth checking for cracked tiles on the roof and replacing them now, while

“Both kits should have batteries, torches, non-perish-

able food, medications, water and any important paperwork sealed in plastic bags.”

Mr Smith said residents should familiarise themselves with sandbag collection points and monitor Council’s website for when they were opened.

“We can deliver bags for people who can’t come and get them, but use family and friends to collect bags too,” he said.

“After the storm has passed you can empty your sandbags in the garden. ”

With about 320 SES volunteers across the region, Mr Smith said they were always keen to have members join.

“There are jobs for everybody but we have a shortage of people who are capable of going out into the field to do the sort of work we need them to do,” he said.

Mr Smith said SES volunteers in the Moreton Bay Region focussed on repairing storm damage, flood mitigation and chainsaw operation, but also assisted

with search and rescue and major events.

“There are other non-functional operations like incident management, community education, administration and welfare,” he said.

All volunteers take part in ongoing training, which is standardised across the state.

“We teach everybody the same way so there’s no ambiguity, which speaks to our safety record.

“The basic way of doing things is the same across Queensland.”

“We’ve currently got a negative IOD, a phenomenon which typically brings an increased chance of rainfall to southern and eastern Australia,” Dr Watkins said.

“The main area we’re watching at the moment is south-eastern Australia, where we have wet soils, high rivers and full catchments and if we get further rain in those areas as forecast, we could see some localised flooding, or even more widespread flooding.”

Research to help ‘forgotten fathers’ STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WITHIN the walls of Redcliffe Hospital, a research project is aiming to support ‘forgotten fathers’, those suffering after traumatic births, pregnancy complications or the death of a baby.

It has been the work of Senior Obstetrician As-

sociate Professor Alka Kothari since 2013 and she is passionate about improving prenatal screening and advice for fathers, support during pregnancy and birth, and care afterwards.

Dr Kothari’s project is just one example of the targeted research happening at Redcliffe Hospital and she would love to see more funding for other projects

and practical support for researchers.

Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day on October 13 will shine a light on the work of the hospital’s researchers and fundraise for new projects. Every dollar donated will be doubled by generous matching donors.

Key to Dr Kothari’s research was the stories of 28 fathers – among them Ben

Mills, whose wife Candise almost died because of a serious pregnancy complication. Dr Kothari consulted Mr Mills during Candise’s operation and recovery, and ensured he had access to counselling afterwards.

She was reunited with Mr and Mrs Mills, and their son Max at Suttons Beach last week, where they discussed the need to do more

for fathers in need.

Mr Mills said support for men was critical.

“She made sure I was part of what was happening, but in saying that Dr Kothari could only do so much … within that hospital system there are very limited services around that,” he said.

“From a young age, men learn not to talk about feelings so handling trauma

manifests in many different ways – use of alcohol, gambling or whatever that looks like,” Mr Mills said.

“It’s hard to talk about.

As males, you’ve got to be strong. We had two things happening – it’s trauma and grief – we had Candise who nearly lost her life … then also the grief of never having an opportunity to have another baby.”

A NEW hub at Kippa-Ring train station being used by railway squad and community-based police will boost rail safety, giving them access to 12,000 CCTV cameras across the network.

Senior officers from both visited the facility with State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath recently.

Ms D’Ath said the hub would make the area safer and commuters feel more comfortable using the network.

“Equipped with workplaces for two police officers, the hub provides direct access to Queensland Rail’s station CCTV network of more than 12,000 cameras and has facilities to process alleged offenders,” she said.

“Officers from Petrie’s police railway squad outpost will operate from the new facility periodically, but what makes this the first of its kind is that it is also available as a base for local police to work from, when required.”

Moreton Police District Superintendent John Hallam said the facility was a boost to local policing in the Kippa-Ring area.

“Access to the facility at Kippa-Ring will increase the capacity of local officers to further improve community safety along the transport corridor and the

Volunteers needed to help seniors BRISBANE Seniors Online (BSOL) has expanded to cover a large part of the Moreton Bay Region and desperately needs more volunteers to help home tutors to meet demand.

BSOL teaches seniors and over 50s emerging technology including Windows, Apple, Android and smart phones in their own homes.

There is a one-off joining fee of $20 and $45 a year gives, as a guide, 12 hours of home lessons and ongoing support.

Save Triple Zero for emergencies POLICE are urging people to only call Triple Zero (000) in the case of a lifethreatening emergency.

Assistant Commissioner Ben Marcus and Acting Superintendent Scott MacQueen launched a new campaign aimed at reducing non-urgent calls to the service, instead encouraging people to report non-urgent matters through Policelink.

Between September last year and August, just 13.67 per cent of calls made to Triple Zero (000) were emergencies.

Assistant Commissioner Marcus said the campaign aimed to raise awareness of the Queensland Police Service’s other reporting avenues by encouraging people to pause and think before dialling Triple Zero.

“Our Police communication centres across the state take more than 726,000 calls each year, and it was alarming

Surf club set for summer

Harbour survey open MORETON Bay Region residents can have their say about the future of Scarborough Boat Harbour.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is seeking feedback about how people would like to use and access the harbour.

The surf lifesaving season got off to a great start, with MP Luke Howarth on hand to officially open Redcliffe’s new clubhouse.

STORY JODIE POWELL THE Redcliffe Surf Life Saving Club has celebrated the start of the lifesaving season with the official opening of its new clubhouse.

Deputy President Kylie Robbins said the new facilities were already making a huge difference to the way the club operated.

“The upgrade includes a new training room, equipment room for boards and

Nipper gear, and trailer room for inflatable rescue boats,” Ms Robbins said.

“It means we can get set up really quickly in the morning with the IRBs.” “It’s making a remarkable difference to our patrol operations, as well as our junior activities and youth development programs.”

The new clubhouse was built with a $650,000 Federal Government grant facilitated by Petrie MP Luke How-

arth and funds raised over many years by volunteers.

“Our builders (Compass Homes and EnProCon) have now turned into major sponsors – they loved what we do so much they’ve signed on for three years.

“They built special board racks for the sheds and they also donated a Smart TV in our training room.”

She said many of the Nippers groups were already full, with numbers capped so each member had a meaningful amount of time to use equipment.

“We’re one of the few clubs that provide boards – others want you to bring your own

“Last year we had nine cadets (aged 15-18) and this year we have 21.”

With surf lifesaving season in full swing, Ms Robbins offered some timely advice.

“Always look for those red and yellow flags – our patrol will always put them in the safest place. Even though Suttons Beach may look very calm, you never know what’s going on.”

Repairs start at Jetty MAINTENANCE work on the Redcliffe Jetty was scheduled to start this week.

Moreton Bay Regional Council discovered issues at the jetty, including the rotunda and the visitor information centre, during a routine inspection.

The work will include fixing or replacing balustrading, posts and light poles, roof struts and battens, as well as replacing the information centre’s awning.

Mr Manning said anchor tenant Woolworths was a dominant supermarket in the area, with easy access and convenient carparking.

Its tenure at the property is more than 20 years.

The centre’s proximity to the train station and the fact that it backs onto Paris Park and has good street access at the rear was also appealing.

“There’s potential for growth and improvement,” he said.

The firm has a long-term vision for the broader precinct and won’t change anything too quickly.

THE new owner and manager of Kallangur Fair Shopping Centre has big things planned for the complex to make it more appealing to long-time customers and newcomers, while creating opportunities for future expansion.

Sydney-based investment firm Ganellen Asset Management bought the centre from a Singaporebased private investor for $22.45 million and took ownership and management of the property on August 1.

Ganellen Real Estate Asset Management Managing Director Richard Manning said the firm had been investing in supermarket-anchored convenience centres for more than 10 years.

This is its first investment in South East Queensland.

Before now, the firm was concerned there was an oversupply of supermarkets in Queensland, but there Kallangur Fair has new owners.

The view is to improve the centre and broader precinct, perhaps seeking planning consent for uses such as aged care and student accommodation, while working with existing and ‘improved retail’.

“We’re looking at a long term-plan, we want to get this right,” Mr Manning said.

He said there was the potential to attract a national brand discount pharmacy.

“We want to give the centre a minor modernisation including the new signage to the facade. It’s stuck in the ’90s.

“We want to create a friendlier environment for the neighbourhood.”

The firm is also in talks with a well known markets provider to host markets on weekends.

“It will put Kallangur more on the map. We’ll do things that are family friendly – jumping castle and petting zoo – to make it a great place to visit on the weekends,” Mr Manning said.

Duty First Legal Service opened in early September with Mrs Smith, a solicitor, and principal lawyer Philippa Whitman at the helm.

Mrs Smith, whose husband served with the Army in East Timor and Iraq, said conversations with support workers involved with Legacy and veteran friends revealed an unmet need and she knew she could do something about it.

Duty First Legal Service provides general and specialised assistance in most areas of law including legal advice and assistance, and court and tribunal representation.

Ms Whitman said there was a significant unmet need for services to veterans.

“Brisbane and Moreton Bay Region have the highest concentration of veterans and war widows in all of Australia, which is surprising. This is based on Department of Veterans Affairs figures. As at April 2021, there were 24,000 in those regions who were current clients of the department and 3667 war widows who were clients of the department,” she said.

“That’s only veterans who are registered with the department. There are a myriad of reasons veteran don’t approach the department and don’t receive the benefits that come from that connection.

“The unmet need was so significant that Sarah and Aaron identified it and are funding this organisation un-

til we’re in a position where we can obtain government funding and donations from the community to continue the service and grow it.”

Ms Whitman said they could provide advice and representation where appropriate, help veterans prepare for tribunals and can attend with them if needed, appear in magistrate’s courts through to Supreme Court and make referrals to firms if they are not in a position to provide representation.

“It’s such a broad-based practice. I think that it’s still early days but the idea is, with the experience that we have, that we don’t limit the opportunity to be of assistance because that’s our motivation,” she said.

The service also plans to connect with local law firms to create a network of lawyers who will volunteer their time.

Mrs Smith said they have had a supportive and positive response since opening.

“We’ve had quite a number of referrals from other organisations,” she said.

“Everyone who has come through the door and asked for help has been really grateful to have someone they can ask for help.”

SESAME Lane Care and Kindergarten has installed an alarm system on its entire fleet of buses to ensure the safety of children in its care.

Head of Sesame Lane Kerri Smith said all 10 buses used to take children on excursions and collect them from school for after-school care had been fitted with the technology at a cost of about $30,000.

“We are vigilant about transporting children. It’s a high priority item that has had some media attention and we’ve put strategies around it to manage the risk and protect the children in our care,” Ms Smith said.

“We have relooked at all of our policies and procedures and implemented mandatory staff induction

about Sesame Lane Care and Kindergarten, visit sesamelane.com.au and training, but the most important thing we’ve done is we’ve fitted our buses with technology to ensure that there’s a reminder check on the buses.”

An alarm will sound unless a staff member walks to the back of the bus and turns it off. Positioning it at the back of the bus ensures the person checks the bus for sleeping children as they walk through the bus to turn off the alarm and again as they exit.

Ms Smith said Sesame Lane investigated many options and different types of technology before deciding on the alarm system.

“If they don’t do that visual check, horns and alarms start to go off. We’ve gone through a little bit of technology and quite a few companies now to find what we feel is the best fit.

“It’s really important, something that’s very close to home and it’s helping our staff too. It’s helping them as a forced reminder because things happen when you’re taking eight children off a bus and another child kicks their toe or something happens … you can get diverted away from doing that visual check. This takes it out of their hands.”

Ms Smith said staff had welcomed the move, which was combined with processes and training to ensure children are safe. Two staff members are now allocated, when transporting children.

Sesame Lane has 10 buses, which are used for school collections for after-school care and excursions.

Ms Smith said being able to take children off-site for

excursions was important, as was giving parents peace of mind.

“Taking children out on excursions is an important part of our program, there are so many fun and educational things to do in our area,” she said.

“Safety is our number one priority, and we know that putting this into place will really make a difference.”

Skye Blue Park reopens THE community celebrated the reopening of Skye Blue Park at Deception Bay, with a family fun event on September 3.

It included children’s activities, a reptile show and more.

Councillor Sandra Ruck (Div 5) said the new playground was already being

used and loved by local families.

“It’s been wonderful to see the children of Deception Bay enjoying the new play features, and that parents have the added peace of mind so they can relax and enjoy the park as much as the children,” Cr Ruck said.

“Skye Blue Park has been

REDCLIFFE’S Vi Wilson has been recognised for more than four decades of service to the community through her work with Zonta.

Ms Wilson, 93, was among the foundation members of the Zonta Club of Redcliffe and said she was proud to be part of an organisation that worked to empower women.

One of the recipients at the recent Petrie Volunteer Awards, she has led the club’s Breast Cushion Project for the past 15 years.

Last year when COVID-19 restrictions halted club sewing, stuffing and packing efforts, Ms Wilson made 200 of the cushions herself.

They are used by women recovering from breast cancer surgery and donated to Redcliffe Hospital and St Vincent’s Northside.

“But that booming popularity means we definitely need more amenities in Boama Park to cater for the crowds.”

Cr Ruck said residents had been asking for improved amenities for some time.

“Locals have spoken with me about the need for a toilet block and I’m proud

Councillor Mark Booth (Div 2) said $700,000 had been allocated to the work in the 2021/22 Council Budget and a further $200,000 to fund a traffic management study to determine future upgrades.

“What we’ll use the $200,000 for, over the next 12 months, is to do traffic monitoring and research where the congestion is, what’s causing it, what the times are and then we’ll formulate our plan on what we need to do to address that situation,” Cr Booth said.

“That could be changing sequencing of traffic lights, different options for roundabouts and intersections or road widening in different places. It could also mean alternative routes. Nothing’s off the table.”

As for the future of the Station/Morayfield/ Progress Rd and Arthur Drewett Drive roundabout, Cr Booth said the traffic study would cover the road from that roundabout to the Burpengary train station roundabout.

NEWPORT Racing Yacht Club finally has a place of its own to call home.

The new club rooms were officially opened by State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath, Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery and Councillor Sandra Ruck (Div 5).

Commodore Bolek Sulikowski said the project was six years in the making and came to fruition as a result of the hard work of a dedicated committee with support from club members.

Mr Sulikowski said the new digs would give the club more flexibility with training and a great venue for socialising after racing.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery said the facility,

RITA-MARIE Lenton has spent the past 21 years helping families farewell their loved ones, and now she’s embarking on a career that will help them celebrate new beginnings.

The manager of the Great Northern Garden of Remembrance said it had been a privilege to help people prepare fitting tributes and she had seen

The property was then known as the Caboolture and Districts Crematorium and Memorial Gardens, and Ms Lenton said she still remembered her first day.

“The first day I arrived at work, the roses were in bloom and I stood and looked at them and felt at home,” she said.

While she has overseen many traditional funerals, Ms Lenton said she had catered to some more unusual requests.

“I was asked to have a funeral for a young girl who had passed from cancer at Walkabout Creek,” she recalled.

“The family arranged a fairy to sprinkle fairy dust on us as we bought the coffin into the area.

“On the day of that funeral – unbeknown to me at the time – a young boy who was dying from cancer told his mother that he was dying and he wanted me to do his funeral.”

A month later the boy and his family approached Ms Lenton, and three months later she arranged his service.

“He will always be in my heart,” she said.

“From that experience, I learned to offer different suggestions to families.

Ms Lenton finished working at the Great Northern Garden of Remembrance at the end of September to embark on a career as a marriage celebrant.

EDNA Brown, one of the region’s oldest residents, has celebrated her 106th birthday.

Members of her family gathered at Embracia Age Care Home in Burpengary late last month to mark the occasion.

Mrs Brown, who used to fish off the old Hornibrook Bridge at Redcliffe, has seven children, 20 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 17 great great grandchildren.

“It’s just a light lunch today,” said one of her four daughters, Betty McQuillan, “mum doesn’t like fuss being made”.

Mrs Brown (nee Sweedman) was born in Windsor on September 23, 1915 and in January 1931 won a dance competition with Cecil Brown.

They married soon after and set up home in Eagle Farm.

Mr Brown worked in the timber industry and died 47 years ago. Mrs Brown loved working with children in hospital and also liked knitting, crochet and lawn bowls.

She is a “fantastic poker player”, said daughter Betty and once got down to the last five, from more than 160 entrants, in a competition at Norths Leagues Club, Kallangur.

She was one of the first residents to move into Embracia at Burpengary when it first opened four years ago.

Betty said her mum had never drunk alcohol or smoked, rarely wears glasses and still likes going on trips and playing bingo.

High achiever wins council bursary

NIKITA Mathison hopes to one day lead the next wave of doctors coming out of the Moreton Bay Region, and she’s well on her way thanks to Council’s $1000 National Council of Women of Queensland (NCWQ) bursary.

Mayor Peter Flannery said it was a great honour to present Miss Mathison with her bursary at Council’s Caboolture chambers on September 21 as just re-

ward for her hard work in the community.

“Our region is full of many high-achieving individuals and Nikita Mathison is certainly one of our brightest shining stars,” he said.

“Nikita has a resume of community work that is larger than most people’s lifetime of work.

“The Scarborough local volunteered to support disadvantaged families at Peninsula-based char-

ity group Salt No Limits, while achieving a 99.50 ATAR in her final year of school, among many other achievements.

“I’m proud of Council’s sponsorship of the annual NCWQ bursary, which helps foster the next wave of community leaders and celebrate the achievements of female students across the country.”

Miss Mathison graduated from Mueller College at Rothwell in 2020.

She was part of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award scheme, competed in triathlon at the State Championships, studied piano and was involved in her school’s service team, helping organise fundraising.

Miss Mathison is studying a Bio Medical Science and Science dual degree at the University of Queensland and said she hoped to specialise in neurology and neonatology.

It is a business he started with the support of his parents and extended family and links back to his grandfather Kevin’s cattle farm near Maleny.

For the past six years, he has been experimenting with spices and flavours, making his own beef jerky and perfecting five recipes.

“It started as a small business at my own house – I

built this shed and everything to produce my own beef jerky there. We started selling it through the butcher shop with great results,” Mr Zelow said.

“With COVID being a little bit of a unicorn year last year, it gave us the opportunity to go that one step further and start this factory here (at Clontarf), so we can start offering jerky to everyone Australia-wide, really and soon to be worldwide.

“The jerky has won all the local meat industry awards and later this week it goes to

the Queensland State Finals to see if it wins Queensland’s best jerky as well.”

Mr Zelow said they bought the building at Snook St, Clontarf, in August last year and spent a couple of months fitting it out.

The team is now producing five flavours – original; hot chilli; sweet chilli; lemon, garlic and pepper; and Aussie barbecue.

“It took us a while to make sure we perfected all the flavours.

“There are more flavours we do want to do eventually,” he said.

AS WE come into a change of season from winter to summer, we're starting to see the arrival of more solid numbers of pelagics such as mackerel, several species of trevally, queenfish, etc and as the weather continues to heat up we'll hopefully see cobia in numbers similar to last season, which saw quite a few very respectable land-based captures around the peninsula.

While the way we target these fish can differ from other species, the main principles of seeking baitfish, structure and features still apply. Pelagics are great fun to target as they can be much more aggressive in their feeding habits, and are usually much easier to deceive into striking a bait or lure.

Anyone who has witnessed a school of pelagic predators harassing and feeding on a rounded up bait school will attest to how chaotic a scene it is, with predators smashing white water all over the surface as they attack their prey from below, and panicked baitfish showering from the water in all directions as they try and avoid becoming a meal.

As many of these fish use speed as their primary weapon to feed, they hit lures and baits hard, particularly when feeding in numbers on schooled up bait.

A couple of easy methods used to find these fish are to find seabirds circling above the chaos below and diving down to pick up any scraps or injured baitfish from the water or locating baitfish showering from the water trying to escape.

In these feeding frenzies, the best way to get a strike is to cast into the chaos and make our

bait or lure imitate a baitfish separated from the school.

Tip: Cast to the edges of the bait school or feeding area, NOT the middle. Casting into the middle puts our offering right in with thousands of other baitfish when a wounded straggler separated from the rest stands out much more prominently to already actively feeding predators.

Look for the birds, look for the bait.

FISHING REPORT • Some solid summer whiting starting to appear around the peninsula and further afield.

• School mackerel have arrived but have been patchy at the time of writing due to some continued cooler weather and not as much bait around to concentrate them.

• Several trevally species are the same as the mackerel.

• Hopefully the rain we're about to receive and some warmer days forecast will flush bait from the creeks and stir things up.

• Flathead numbers are slowing down as the males break off from their schools hanging around the females and go their separate ways. These fish are still there, they're just spread out more once breeding season slows down.

• Squire and snapper are slowing down to a degree, but we do have a year-round resident population of these fish these days, and like the flathead, they're still here, just with a bit more water between fish once out of season.

• Respectable bream still being caught around all the usual haunts.

• Waiting to see what the pelagic season produces this summer. Last year saw good cobia, Spanish, spotted and school mackerel, trevally species, plus more, with all these available land-based for those willing to put the effort in.

GARFISH are another one of our underappreciated local angling species, but many a child has had oodles of fun watching them scoff bread and dance around when hooked.

They are of course fantastic bait for many species but also very good eating fish. There are at least 12 species of garfish in Australian waters.

Three species of garfish are commonly encountered by anglers in Moreton Bay – sea garfish, river garfish and snubnosed garfish. Another three species may also be encountered.

The snub-nosed garfish is just as happy in freshwater as it is saltwater and occurs in some of our freshwater impoundments where they are targeted by anglers.

Garfish are not to be confused with longtom. While both are slender surface fish, they belong to a different family of fish.

The diet of garfish changes as the fish grows. Very small fish start out eating animal matter before they transition to consuming more plant material.

Typically, garfish consume seagrass or filamentous algae and mostly in our region feed during the day. In other localities, garfish species can switch to feeding on plankton at night, but this occurs less frequently here.

They are gutless – literally.

Garfish lack a stomach but have jaws in their pharynx which they use to grind up food.

Only the upper jaw is mobile,

the lower jaw is fixed.

While most of our angling species simply shed large numbers of tiny eggs into the water, garfish take a different approach. They produce few relatively large eggs (more than 2.5mm) that are covered with filaments that allow them to attach to floating vegetation or vegetation on the seabed.

The life cycle of garfish is thus dependent on suitable seagrass or algal habitats.

Garfish deposit batches of eggs that number in their thousands, which is a far cry from the tens to hundreds of thousands that are produced by many other species. However, they can start breeding in their first year and are relatively quick growing.

Our common species grow to about six or seven years of age depending on the species.

Garfish tend to spawn more than once per spawning period and the spawning period is generally six months or more.

Although there are some gaps in knowledge, spawning in Moreton Bay typically occurs in winter and spring.

What’s going on with the property market?

Why are prices rising so fast? Why can’t I find a home? The simple answer is that it all comes down purely to SUPPLY AND DEMAND. Quoting Corelogic’s September 2021 Housing market update “The number of house sales in Brisbane over the last 12 months is 41% higher than the 5-year average, whilst total active listings are 30% below the 5-year average.” These numbers are staggering. Many, many, more houses have sold whilst at the same time there is approximately a third fewer coming to the market to be sold. This has created a disconnect between advertised supply and demand which has put intense upward pressure on housing prices.

Corelogic also reports that “the Brisbane housing market’s monthly rate of growth is holding around 1.1% to 1.2% month on month since May.” Putting this into dollars, even a median priced Brisbane home is seeing its value increase by more than $1500 per week at the current growth rate.

At the moment, being a buyer is the toughest it’s been since the property boom of the early 2000’s. As a seller though, conditions have probably never been better.

The average days that it takes to sell a property have plummeted, whilst the amount a seller has to discount off their asking price (if a property even has one) is now less than 1% in most areas. With very limited choices, buyers are making compromises to secure a property that they probably normally wouldn’t make.

Residential Sales & Rentals

So how long will the party last for Seller’s? Everyone has a different opinion. The one thing that is certain is, that it will end when supply and demand rebalance and that will happen at some point. That is the ABSOLUTE nature of the property cycle.

If you are thinking of selling, there is a golden window of opportunity. At some point regulators, interest rates, affordability constraints, lower interstate migration (it could be any number or combination of things) will stop the frenzy in its tracks.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WHILE Dolphins Intrust Super Cup coach Adam Mogg is disappointed Tweed Seagulls ended his side’s 2021 final campaign in emphatic fashion, he is already looking to next year and says there is plenty to get excited about.

The Dolphins lost 41-22 at Tugun on September 25, in hot and windy conditions.

A strong northerly breeze favoured Tweed in the first half and they were ahead 18-0 after 14 minutes.

The Dolphins composed themselves and narrowed the lead to 18-12 before half-time, with tries to Will Partridge and captain Cameron Cullen, but Tweed dominated with four more tries in the second half.

Tries to the Dolphins’ Jeremy Hawkins and Preston Riki were not enough to bridge the gap.

Before the game, Mogg said his players would need to nullify Tweed’s star halfback Toby Sexton.

They did not, and he scored 17 points from one try, six goals and one field goal.

“Sexton was the best player on the park, he won man of the match and deservedly so. He has an NRL kicking game which made the difference,” Mogg said.

He said Tweed’s kicking game was superior and the wind was not a factor.

“I was disappointed with some of the preparation going into the game.

Preparation has to be spot on … you don’t win big games without good preparation,” Mogg said.

The focus has now shifted to preseason training, which is likely to start at

the end of October.

“I’m excited about the (Vodafone) Warriors being based at Redcliffe. That will aid continuity,” he said.

He is looking forward to meeting with officials from the NRL club to work out the plan for season 2022.

“There’s not a lot of things we got wrong.

We had 47 players (come through) and played in a second elimination semifinal,” Mogg said.

“Every one of the players bought into what we wanted to achieve this year.

“I’m proud of the fact

that we had some kids from Colts play first grade. That hasn’t happened at our club for a long time.”

The majority of the squad will return in 2022 but there are a few players training and trialling with NRL clubs and they might need to be replaced.

Mogg said the prospect of the ARL making an announcement about the 17th team was also exciting.

“Queensland needs another team. There’s no doubt about it, so hopefully it’s us,” he said. “There’s a lot to look forward to.”

IT was certainly an exciting season with the announcement of the partnership with the NZ Warriors. We knew that was going to be a challenge but also a huge positive for our club.

We used 47 players over the season which would have to be some sort of record in Queensland Cup and finished just outside the top four.

For Dolphins fans it’s all positive news ahead with some very exciting young talent unearthed this season. There is a certain buzz around the club with the announcement of the 17th NRL team not far away (hopefully) and the huge opportunity that lies ahead.

For 2022, we are once again partnering with the Warriors and they will be based at Redcliffe, which will mean we can work very closely together.

We are disappointed bowing out early in the finals to Tweed however I am very proud of the season we had and all the adversity we faced.

To all the Dolphins fans, members and sponsors, thank you so much for all your support in what was a very challenging year with COVID-19 and everything else going on. On to 2022 … up the Phins!

Five called-up by state STORY NICK CROCKFORD REDCLIFFE Leagues Softball Association has five players and one official in Softball Queensland’s squad for the national championships in 2022.

Kaden Civoniceva, Logan Green, Eli Hardy-Abdy and Blake Turner are in the Under 16 Boys’ squad with Redcliffe’s Kevin Ray as assistant coach. Deija Perkinson has been selected for the Queensland Under 16 Girls.

All were selected after Redcliffe’s success at the recent Under 16 State titles in Mackay (boys) and Brisbane (girls).

Redcliffe won the girls’ President’s Cup overcoming a tough first day to record five straight victories.

The young squad – eight were Under 14s – beat Caboolture 14-2 in the final.

Redcliffe’s Under 16 Boys excelled to reach the final – a feat not achieved by a Redcliffe team for some years – against Redlands.

Despite losing, there were many positives.

“I’m really so proud of the way both teams performed,” Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association President Carrie Te Wani said.

Dolphins to field new team PAGE 56 // STORY CONTINUED CLEAL said the QRL was keen for all Intrust Super Cup clubs to field a team in the BHP Premiership competition in the coming years and starting with the U-19 competition was the best way to set players up for success.

He said the Dolphins’ goal was to have a team playing at the highest level.

“We’d love to field a BHP team and be successful at that level as well,” he said.

“We want this to work and it’s on the back of some really strong numbers with our junior teams throughout the year. This is the right time to do it.

“The (QRL’s) plan is for the women’s competition to run side by side with the Intrust Super Cup.” He said rugby league offered female players the same benefits as their male counterparts – health and fitness, being part of a team and social opportunities.

At this stage, there is no junior competition for girls so most play in mixed teams until about U-12s.

Cleal said he hoped it would change with the growing profile of the women’s game.

Stepping down after 30 years

STORY NICK CROCKFORD FOR 30 years Santo Perna has volunteered at Redcliffe Little Athletics – officiating, supporting and marking the track lines.

But Perna, 73, who has moved from Mango Hill, his home for of 30 years, to Burpengary, has called time on track marking after three decades.

“I have told the committee this is my last year,” he said, “it is getting tiring.”

“Maybe I’ll come back and help just on the committee, but not the line marking.

“I love sport. I love the involvement and watching the kids perform, brilliantly some of them.

“Marking out lines can be very therapeutic, but I thought it was the right time to stop.”

Carefully and patiently, Perna has prepared the oval track, sprint lanes

and field areas at Langdon Park, Margate. At first, using oil, lines were done every four or five weeks during the six-month season. Today, using a special line marking liquid, around 3km of lines are marked 12-13 times over the same period.

It all began in 1991-92 when Perna and his wife Marney enrolled their children for Redcliffe Little Athletics (summer) and Margate FC (winter) which became Peninsula Power.

Perna volunteered and in his first season at Little Athletics was an official on club nights, measuring distances and starting races.

Twelve months later he had a place on the committee and was marking the track lines.

By 2015, he was also marking pitches at four football clubs – Peninsula Power, Virginia, Deception Bay and Redcliffe PCYC. At Power, Perna also helped set up the goals and equipment on Saturdays

Perna volunteered and is now qualified and licenced through AUSTSWIM. He does two six-week blocks with Kippa-Ring, Woody Point and Scarborough School students.

football, did not take part in organised athletics and can only swim a length of a pool.

Yet, he was still named Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Sports Person of the Year in 2009.

“It’s a thrill to see what five and six-year-old swimmers can do,” he said. “I never had such an opportunity. But my aim and the aim of teachers, coach and clubs is to try and make sure kids are safe in the water.”

Ryan gets ready for restart NORTH Lakes racer Ryan Suhle may be back on the track later this month.

The Porsche Sprint Challenge, suspended after two rounds earlier this year, plans to return at The Bend in South Australia on October 15-17.

Suhle, pictured below, leads the Mobil Pro standings with 284 points, 26 ahead of Christian Pancionne, after rounds in Sydney and Phillip Island.

But there will now be two rounds at Tailem Bend, with practice on the Friday and three races on the Saturday and again Sunday.

“It has been confirmed it would be a national championship if four rounds are held,” said Suhle. “We have a bit of a points buffer but anything can happen in double rounds.”

Suhle went to Emerald last weekend to prepare by entering the Queensland Karting Championships.

“I’ve done testing, but you still have to stay sharp,” Suhle said. “Karting is fast-paced and a lot closer.

The tracks are tighter and there’s quicker acceleration, but speeds are around 130-140km/h.”

Surf club wins state honour REDCLIFFE Surf Life Saving Club has a Special Commendation for Junior and Youth Development from Queensland Surf Life Saving Awards of Excellence after the close decision between Redcliffe and winners Tallebudgera.

Media and promotions officer Rob van Driel said: “To be considered one of the top junior and youth development clubs of 57 in Queensland is a massive honour.”

Max takes golden haul to six with double at shield meet MAX Cunningham, from Grace Swimming Club, has continued his remarkable recent run adding two BSA Patrons Shield victories to his state titles.

Cunningham won the 12 Years Boys’ 50m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly in the Patrons Shield at Glennie School, Toowoomba, late last month.

He was representing Brisbane Swimming Association (BSA) against the Gold Coast, Wide Bay and Darling Downs.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD REDCLIFFE Dolphins Soccer Club Inc (formerly Redcliffe PCYC) has had a remarkable finish to its season of change.

Dolphins has separated from the PCYC after 39 years and will start its social summer five-a-side on October 15 under its new incorporated name.

'Phins senior men's team finished its regular season

under the new name and celebrated by winning promotion to the highest level it has played in.

Dolphins were third entering their final Football Brisbane Capital League 2 match against second-placed Clairvaux, but leapfrogged the visitors with a crushing 5-0 victory.

on Scott and Jamie Hilliar hit one apiece, with an own goal completing the haul.

It has been confirmed Dolphins will be in the new FQPL4, which is the fifth tier in Football Queensland's (FQ) new structure.

As such, they may face clubs which were playing Brisbane Premier League football this season.

“Despite all the interruptions this year with lockdowns, the transition to a

stand-alone club and the FB/FQ situation we have excelled as a united community club,” said registrar Ginette Barrett.

“Our seniors and divisional teams have been extremely successful, with our seniors finishing second on the ladder and being promoted to FQPL4 for 2022 season.

“This is the highest division the club has ever played in.”

Dolphins’ Under 12 Division 5 side was undefeated all season; the Under 12 Division 10 team won every game but one, which was a draw and Under 14 Division 2 is top of the ladder with two matches remaining.

“We are so very proud of all our players,” Barrett said. “We look forward to starting next season fresh under our new club banner Redcliffe Dolphins Soccer Club Inc.”

One down, one to go – The Lakes' finals target THE Lakes FC has achieved its first goal of the Brisbane Premier League season – and now has its sights on a new target.

Finals football arrives this weekend when The Lakes, third in its first season in Brisbane’s Premier League (BPL), travel to runners-up Bayside.

Victory will book a place in the grand final at Perry Park on October 17 against premiers Albany Creek Excelsior (ACE) or St George Willawong.

“I challenged the boys at

the start of the season to make the top four,” The Lakes’ Club Captain Josh Fearn said.

“We set the goal and achieved it. Now we have a chance to reach the grand final.”

The Lakes lost 5-0 and 3-1 to Bayside in the regular season, but Fearn said: “Semi-finals are always 50:50 games.

“We’ll make sure we prepare well, keep calm and relax. I hope we can take plenty of our supporters to Bayside.”

Fogarty scored six in the final fixture, an 8-1 thumping of Brisbane Knights, to finish on 29 – joint top scorer with ACE’s Ally Russell

and Ryan Shaughnessy.

It was a remarkable finish for a team which rose four tiers, from Capital League 3 in 2018 to the BPL in 2021.

“We lost some players during the season and gained some,” said Fearn, who with Fogarty played for the Australian Indigenous men against Peninsula Power in February.

“We have one of the youngest teams in the competition. Players are in their 20s and the goalkeeper is 18, which is a great looking to the future.”

North Lakes Leopards Junior Rugby Union Club has its Annual General Meeting on Sunday, October 10 at Woodside Sports Complex, cnr Gardenia Pde and Discovery Dr, North Lakes.

A Ladies Elite competition will be launched at North Lakes Oztag to start next season in February. Ladies Elite will be on Wednesday nights for representative players or mixed A/B female players.

PENINSULA Power is just one win from retaining the greatest prize in Queensland football – the NPL Premiership.

It could come on Friday night at AJ Kelly Park (kick off 7.45pm) when Easts are the visitors.

And coach Aaron Philp has asked all Power fans “come along and cheer the boys” as they chase a slice of history.

Only Brisbane Strikers (2016, 2017) and Lions (2018, 2019) have retained the NPL title. Power is on the cusp of joining them.

A 4-0 win over Magpies Crusaders at the weekend took Power five points clear of second-placed Brisbane Roar Youth, the only team which can overtake them.

But, three points against Easts on Friday will lift Power to 59 points, two more than the maximum Roar can finish with.

“We’ve had girls sprinkled through junior team groups from day one, so I’m excited to field a team of young women,” Cleal said.

“We’ve had quite a bit of interest in it by emails and phone calls. That’s what the expression of interest process is all about … to find out what appetite there is from players.

“We have purpose-built facilities in the northern stand. It would be nice to get them in there.”

Expressions of interest will close mid-November.

THE Dolphins are looking for players to be part of its inaugural Women’s U-19 2022 Harvey Norman competition team, which aims to kick-off in time for the 2022 season.

The club has started an expression of interest process and needs 26-28 players to field a team.

Head of Football Grant Cleal said joining the U-19s competition was an important step towards entering a team in the QRL’s BHP Premiership open women’s competition, hopefully in 2023.
