Fight to stop littering goes on STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE Love Our Clontarf 100-day litter campaign might be drawing to a close, but the battle to stop littering and increase fines is only just ramping up.

The campaign, launched by the Pristine Peninsula Group earlier this year, focused on Clontarf and aimed to raise awareness of the problem while mobilising residents and businesses to take action.

Founder Les Barkla said he had not been surprised by

the large volume and types of litter collected throughout the campaign, but he hoped others might be.

On the day Dolphins News met volunteers at Snook St, they collected almost 700 cigarette butts on just a 1.6km stretch of the road.

Mr Barkla said there was 226,000km of road across the state, so the high number of discarded cigarette butts was a huge problem.

“It’s a cultural thing in this country, we have to change. Litter does not disappear, it can stay in the environment – especially

plastic – for over 500 years before it breaks down to microplastics,” he said.

By Mr Barkla’s count, there could be as many as 70,000 pieces of litter each year, just in the small area the group has targeted in the past 100 days.

“I wanted to have some data to show stakeholders that this is a pretty serious problem we have,” he said.

Mr Barkla has launched a survey for peninsula residents and so far, 90 per cent of people support higher litter fines, and fines of $500 or more. The mini-

mum fine at present is $266.

He has also launched an e-petition calling for the Queensland Parliament to: undertake a statewide litter education campaign; increase litter fines; strengthen litter laws to enable council rangers to issue on-the-spot-fines; and adequately resource councils to enforce litter laws.

The campaign officially ends on May 8, but the group is already discussing ways it can continue.

Ceremony marks loss

It's a personal challenge

SOROPTIMIST International Moreton North (SIMNI), based at North Lakes, is holding a candle lighting ceremony at Lake Eden today (May 5) from 5-6.30pm.

It is part of the annual Candlelight Vigil to remember the lives lost through domestic and family violence.

SIMNI will meet at Lake Eden for a small ceremony to acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice made by those who have passed.

At 6pm all will be invited to light the lake, with battery-operated candles, by walking to a spot or walking around the lake.

STACEY Miles-Ward is a mum on a mission.

In June, she will take off on the adventure of a lifetime – running six half-marathons and a full marathon in seven cities in seven days – to raise money for a cause close to her heart.

Ms Miles-Ward is the Queensland National Runner for the Bravehearts 777 marathon and has been training for the event doing laps of Lake Eden at North Lakes.

“I only started running in 2015 and I couldn’t even run a kilometre – it was so embarrassing,” she said.

“It’s a personal challenge − I’ve done a number of half marathons and my first full marathon was the River Run when I turned 40.”

Bravehearts works to prevent child sexual assault and exploitation, as well as providing education, counselling, support and advocacy.

It starts in Toowoomba on June 28, travelling to Brisbane, Mount Isa, Cairns, Townsville and Mackay, before finishing with a 42km run in the Gold Coast Marathon. Having worked in child protection with the Australian Federal Police, the mum of one is no stranger to the impact of child abuse.

“Bravehearts is a vital piece of the puzzle when it comes to the prevention of child sexual assault,” she said.

“The work they do is just phenomenal because it’s one of those crime types no-one wants to talk about.

“Children are our most vulnerable and they’re our future – we need to pro-

tect them.” Ms Miles-Ward said the statistics around child sexual assault and exploitation were sobering.

“It’s one child every two hours in Australia and one in five Australian children will be sexually harmed by the time they turn 18.”

Tasked with raising at least $10,000 to compete in the Bravehearts 777 Marathon, Ms Miles-Ward said donations were vital to help the organisation continue to support children.

A $12 donation provides access to Bravehearts’ personal safety program, $150 pays for a face-to-face counselling session and $75 provides phone counselling.

Desert challenge begins MAREE Stephenson has set off from just outside Brisbsane on a 10,000km adventure which could see her ride into the history books.

The Griffin resident, pictured, is five days into her 10 Desert Challenge with no support team, temperatures down to -5 degrees and limited access to water and services.

She will cycle across 10 deserts in four Australian states finishing in Birdsville on September 17, where her partner and son will be waiting.

Embracing life, parenthood STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WHEN Sharon Armstrong and Kathryn Bishop launched their North Lakes business Embrace Life in 2009, they were motivated by a desire to help new parents, particularly mothers, be happy, confident and healthy.

The pair were mums themselves, and with the support of their husbands, juggled running a business with raising their young children.

Mrs Armstrong, a registered nurse, with a passion for mothers and babies, saw an opportunity to realise a dream of working with families in a way that aligned with her values.

“I’ve got that community-orientated love of families.

My mother was a midwife, so I was surrounded by babies as a child. She used to hold the Australian Breastfeeding classes at home. There were always mothers and babies in my life,” she said.

Mrs Armstrong and Mrs Bishop realised families, and particularly new parents, needed more support and many were buckling under the pressure to be perfect.

“For us, it was very much about values-based, non-judgemental information and support for families,” Mrs Armstrong said.

“I see parents for any number of things, but usually start out just with the breastfeeding. That could be they’re having a little bit of pain, it could be they’re struggling to adapt to the new baby, it could be in pregnancy as well.”

As well as offering a range of services to assist, they provide free clinics twice a week which aim to bring new parents together and answer questions.

“We’ve offered that free because, for us, it’s about community. Anyone can come to that, they don’t have to be a client,” Mrs Armstrong said.

“We’ve always advocated

for women’s health, particularly around birth and babies, and we continue to do that every opportunity we get.”

The main issues new mothers are concerned about are sleep, feeding, their baby’s development or their own mental health.

Mrs Armstrong said feelings of anxiety and isolation had been amplified during the COVID-19 shutdown.

“It’s about normalising parenthood as a challenge, normalising developmental milestones instead of a competition over how much weight this baby has put on,” she said.

“There are so many things that people can get insecure about when it comes to parenting because there is a lot of social media –

they say keeping it real but I would be very concerned if some of it is real.

“I’m able to say to them, it doesn’t matter if you’re doing it wrong because the baby doesn’t know you’re doing it wrong. They’re not judging you, so don’t worry about it.”

She said there was too much pressure on new parents, with misplaced emphasis on hours slept, nappies changed and weight gained.

“People need to feel parenting a little bit more instead of being too rigid.

There will be parents who can do rigid, but there’s a

lot of people who cannot and need a lot of support,” she said “There’s a lot of calming it down and really going back to their values. For me, it’s about having a conversation with them about what sort of parent they want to be.”

Redcliffe Mums making a difference THE mothers behind the Redcliffe Mums group are passionate about giving children the same opportunities at school, no matter their financial situation.

It is a small but active group comprised of Trisha Hassum, Leanne Scott, Kyle Gadd, Mick Gadd, Melissa Pogmore, Kylie Pogmore, Kim Forsyth and Geoff Morris.

The organisation has been running for about

two years, but its activities have ramped up during the past 12 months as the impact of COVID-19 was felt across the community.

“We just wanted to help people and help the kids who don’t have what they need.

That could be schoolbooks, textbooks, excursion costs, uniforms, shoes or things like that,” Ms Hassum said.

Ms Scott said it was important all children had the same opportunities at

school and the equipment they needed to learn.

“I’ve got kids at school here and they’ve got friends that have no money and can’t afford this and that. One had not had a Christmas tree in their life,” she said.

The group has been hosting fundraising events to buy the items children need and help them feel good about themselves.

There are two events

planned in coming months including an afternoon of music and fun on May 30 and a trivia night on July 31 at The Deception Bay Club.

Members of the group liaise with school chaplains to pinpoint children in need and to work out how they can help.

“We’re not here to embarrass anyone, the school gives (the items) to them secretly,” Ms Hassum said.

“The aim is to make a dif-

ference in children’s lives and do part to help people in the community.”

Ms Gadd said it also gave parents, who are struggling to cover costs, peace of mind.

All work fulltime and have busy lives with their own children, but agreed they were never too busy to help others.

“You can always find five minutes to help someone,” Ms Gadd said.

THEY turned out in their thousands to commemorate Anzac Day at Redcliffe RSL’s Dawn Service, and as the sun rose, reflected on a time when the war was fought on Australia’s doorstep.

In his address, Redcliffe RSL President Neville Cullen told the large group of veterans, families and the general public how the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbour was the start of an intensive campaign in the Pacific.

Mr Cullen spoke of the sustained bombing campaign in Darwin, which killed hundreds and wounded many more, then described raids by Japanese Zero Fighters in Broome, attacks in Townsville and Mosman and midget submarine attacks in Sydney.

In a moving moment, Redcliffe’s own Rupert McCall recited Heroes of Tobruk, a tribute to his grandfather Barney McCall who was a

Rat of Tobruk and to his father Kerry, who passed away last week.

It was a difficult reading for McCall, a f avourite at the Redclif fe Dawn Service, but a moment he said he was not going to miss.

During his address, Mr Cullen welcomed news of a Royal Commission into veteran suicide and said the Redcliffe RSL Sub Branch would be making a submission.

The Sub Branch also held a veterans’ forum with Assistant Defence Minister Andrew Hastie and Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth on May 4.

MANGO HILL The Mango Hill Anzac Day commemoration used two famous stories to honour the 106th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings.

In a ceremony, of music and reflection, on April 21, Louise Winton told the story of Simpson and his donkey evacuating wounded soldiers in the first few days of the campaign.

Dave Norman put the spotlight on the Silent Anzac – the AE2 submarine which made it through the heavily mined Dardanelles to support the landings.

Trevor Ruthenberg read the Anzac Reflection, Briana Kelly The Ode and Stewart Boston-Dart sounded the Last Post/Reveille before Louise Winton sang the Australian and New Zealand national anthems.

The commemoration was attended by about 60 people at Mango Hill Community Centre.

PINE RIVERS About 1200 people gathered at Kallangur Memorial Park to pay their respects during the Pine Rivers RSL Sub Branch Dawn Service.

With numbers restricted by COVID-19, the service was also live-streamed by the North Leagues and Services Club through its Facebook page.

Sub Branch President Margaret Lord welcomed those attending, saying it was fitting to recall those who served in war and those who did not return to receive their thanks from a grateful nation.

She paid tribute to servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice, prisoners of war, peacekeeping forces and those who served in humanitarian missions.

“Fear not that you have died for naught,” she said.

The Salvation Army’s Major Lyn Cook led the service in prayer, before Major Jess McKinnon spoke of the first Anzac Day on April 25, 1915, when about 2000 Australians were killed or wounded at Gallipoli.

“In December, the Anzacs were evacuated,” Major McKinnon told the service.

By then, about 8700 Australians and 2700 New Zealand troops had died.

“For us, it’s about community, it’s about giving back, being able to help people.”

Delays for overpass project CONSTRUCTION schedules for the $163 million Deception Bay Road overpass upgrade were hit by the wet spring weather.

Preparations for the temporary closure of New Settlement Rd, between Old Gympie Rd and Marks Rd, were not completed due to heavy rain. It is believed this may now be rescheduled for the June/July school holidays.

Earthworks, drainage and road pavement work is continuing on those three roads and the Eastern Service Rd with construction of the new bridge over the highway.

Most night work was postponed during March on the Bruce Highway upgrade, north of Caboolture, but the project is expected to make progress in May.

“We’ll now replace the temporary lights with permanent pedestrian signals on the south-eastern leg of the roundabout.”

Cr Jodie Shipway (Div 4) said she was excited to be able to provide locals with such a sensible solution.

“This $278,000 investment in safety is a great outcome for our community,” she said. “Our population is

growing, which means local foot traffic will only increase in this area, especially as student numbers at St Benedict’s College grow and more locals use the railway station.

“I believe wholeheartedly that we need to be proactive about road safety before there’s so much as a near miss.”

Police campaign to focus on hoons DRIVERS taking part in illegal mass hoon gatherings will be further targeted under new anti-hoon powers passed in State Parliament last month.

Police Minister Mark Ryan said amendments to the legislation would turn the table on hoons and support police enforcement action against those taking part in these gatherings.

“As a result of these new laws, police are now equipped with powers which will enable them to serve notices on the owner of a vehicle involved in hooning offences,” Mr Ryan said.

“This means if the owner of a vehicle claims they weren’t driving at the time of the offence, it will be up to them to prove it.”

Mr Ryan said road policing units across Queensland would be using the latest camera technology, along with the traffic monitoring CCTV network, to target mass hoon gatherings.

“Police are already capturing hooning incidents on new high-quality cameras and meticulously reviewing the footage to identify drivers involved and take strong enforcement action,” he said.

“The new laws are a game-changer for police, providing greater flexibility for officers to go after each and every vehicle taking part in illegal hoon events.

“Offenders will no longer be able to avoid prosecution by simply masking their identities and deny-

ing they had been behind the wheel.

“Illegal mass hoon gatherings are a disaster waiting to happen and the State Government makes no apologies for Queensland maintaining its strongest stance on hooning in the country.”

Road Policing and Regional Support Command Ben Marcus said recent hooning events on the Gold Coast highlighted how dangerous hooning activities could become.

“The community does not accept their reckless antics and police will certainly not

tolerate anti-social and dangerous hooning behaviour in our neighbourhoods.”

As part of Operation Tango Vinyl, an anti-hooning operation on the Gold Coast which started in March, 201 infringement notices have been issued, 12 charges for serious offences have been

laid and nine vehicles have been impounded.

“Police across Queensland have been rolling out a range of strategies to disrupt and prevent hooning activity,” he said.

Hub to be vital child health link for region STORY JODIE POWELL A NEW Health Hub at Hercules Road State School will link families across the region with crucial health services.

Officially launching the hub last week, guidance officer Kylie Bocking said the state departments of Health and Education had joined forces to help students and their families.

Ms Bocking said the hub was two years in the making and aimed to give families access to key health services to

enhance the development of students.

“While we have not met all our goals yet, our commitment continues to grow,” Ms Bocking said.

“We’re wrapping around families and providing them with the support they need.

“We have a dream where all children and families gain access to health professionals on our site.”

Ms Bocking said the hub would provide accurate, purposeful and honest information.

So far, the health hub

has a child health nurse and an early intervention staff member on site once a fortnight, but Ms Bocking said the aim was to ultimately offer a full suite of health services.

She said that since the service opened 80 families had used its services.

“For many of them, it’s their first connection with health.”

Call for action on fire station MANGO Hill Progress Association (MHPA) has called on the State Government to make a “commitment” next month on a new fire station at North Lakes.

President Laurence Christie said the MHPA wanted a “commitment in the State Budget for land to be purchased for the new fire station at North Lakes”.

MHPA has written to State Member for Bancroft Chris Whiting, who told the MHPA meeting in February he was confident funding would be in the next budget.

“I believe the State Government is making good progress in the process to acquire a suitable site for a fire station,” Mr Whiting said.

“I will continue to liaise with the State Government and the Minister’s office on this election commitment.”

There are currently fire stations in Petrie, KippaRing and Deception Bay but not in the fast-growing North Lakes-Mango Hill area.

MHPA met with the State Government and Emergency Services last year to campaign for a fire station and a suitable site.

Before the State Election last October, a commitment was given by Member for Murrumba Steven Miles, now the State’s Deputy

Members of the association have also surveyed the area and put forward suggested sites, including an emergency services hub on Joyner Circuit.

There has been growing media coverage of the issue since the tragic death of an elderly women in a house fire at North Lakes last month (April).

Tender awarded for Deception Bay hall A NEW community hall for Deception Bay has moved a step closer, with Moreton Bay Regional council awarding the tender to build the $4.5 million facility.

Councillors voted unanimously to award the tender to Badge Constructions.

As part of the project the existing Raymond Tce hall will be demolished, paving the way for a new facility that includes an integral space for Meals on Wheels.

The project will increase the capacity of the building, creating flexible and separately hireable spaces while including the stage and theatre that were in the old hall.

Councillor Sandra Ruck (Div 5) thanked the Federal Government for its $2.5 million contribution, which allowed the project to be brought forward.

“Locals are really pleased that the stage and theatre aspects have still been included,” Cr Ruck said.

A report to Council said community halls enabled the provision of communitybased events, private functions and activities that required access to a suitable shared space on a temporary or regular basis in a cost-efficient manner.

It said the new hall would meet the growing demand for social and community services in the area.

TO his 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, the Reverend Allan Charles Male was simply JOG – Jolly Old Grandpa.

But to the broader community Rev Male, who passed away on April 14 aged 85, was so much more.

Married to wife Kath for 62 years, Rev Male dedicated his life to the service of others, and founded Shaftesbury College (now Arethusa College) in the 1980s.

Grandson Sam Major has fond memories of adventures on the campus’s vast acreage.

“Growing up we used to wander around the campus, climbing all over the Expo 88 signs,” Mr Major said.

“He ran a lot of camps, and we’d go along too.”

Rev and Mrs Male had four children, and Mr Major said that when his grandfather started his service with the church, his grandmother gave her full support.

“She said to him ‘you go and look after the children in need and I will look after our (four) children’,” he said.

“His motto was ‘it’s better to build a boy than mend a man’.”

Rev Male, whose funeral was held at the Redcliffe Uniting Church on April 22, was a dedicated member of Rotary, with a 100 per cent attendance record over 50 years.

“There was one time he was taken to hospital and they ended up moving the

meeting into the hospital,” Mr Major recalled.

He even came out of retirement to help run the Church of Christ at Boondall.

Rev Male was the Youth Director for Churches of Christ and named Queensland Father of the Year in 1976. Among the honours bestowed on him were being named a Member of the Order of Australia, a Member of the British Empire, and a Knight of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. He was also awarded Churchill Fellowship to study in the UK, Holland and USA, named a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow and awarded the Rotary International President’s Salute to citation.

Roza Demetrie and Stan Tallon want people to join Belvedere Social Club.

Good times, causes THE Belvedere Social Club has been helping the community for more than 20 years and is looking for new members.

President Roza Demetrie said while the club’s fundraising activities were curtailed by COVID-19 restrictions last year, membership had bounced back and they were ready to help those in need.

“Where someone’s child may have made a national team and there’s a trip and they have to pay for airfares and they may be short, they can come to us for help,” Ms Demetrie said.

“We’ll discuss it among the members of the club and we’ll agree to cover it or donate towards it.”

Membership of the club is $20 a year, which includes discounts at the Belvedere Hotel, invitations to members’ events and two membership draws for cash prizes each week.

“We have a Sunday membership draw, which starts at $100 and jackpots and the Publican’s Purse on Wednesdays provided by the hotel, which starts at $100 and jackpots then at the end of the month if it hasn’t gone off we draw a member’s name out of the barrel.”

Creativity on show STORY JODIE POWELL CREATIVE pupils from Clontarf Beach State School have their art on show at the Redcliffe Library for the first time.

Eleven students from the school have been working on their pieces as part of after-school workshops run by Intuitive Artist Chrissy Foreman.

Ms Foreman has run classes at the school for several years, but this is the first time pupils have had their work on display in a public space.

“We focus on different mindfulness techniques at the start of each lesson and then I show them materials related to the technique and we begin the art,” she explained.

“Each piece unfolded in layers – nature drawing, collages, watercolour.”

Workshop puts spotlight on bullying STORY JODIE POWELL CREATIVE students converged on The Space @ North Lakes for a threeday theatrical workshop that culminated in a performance on the final day.

The school holiday workshop, presented by Moreton Bay Region Libraries, The Space @ North Lakes, and Laughing Goat Productions, led participants through a creative process to develop a play – The Swipe - about cyber bullying and cyber safety based on real stories.

Day one was spent developing the play, while on day two students had the chance to explore the world of special effects with industry professionals from Warner Brothers Movie World.

Special effects artists transformed participants, creating monsters, mock cuts, bruises, bites and bullet holes using prosthetics and skilfully applied make-up.

On day three, the students refined the script, rehearsed and performed for family and friends.

Farewelling Kerry McCall

Kerry McCall loved to feed butcher birds on his back steps.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT A SPORTS fan, music lover, fanatical surfer, cryptic crossword champion and practical joker were some of the ways Kerry Francis McCall was remembered by family and friends during a service to celebrate his life on April 26 at Holy Cross Catholic Church.

On what would have been his 74th birthday, he was also remembered for the love he had for his family and the mates he had for life.

Mr McCall died on April 18, after a debilitating battle with cancer that robbed him of a few things, but not his sense of humour.

He is survived by wife of 52 years, Maureen, and sons Jason ‘Rupert’, Brett and Steve.

Kerry was born in Sydney to young Digger and Rat of Tobruk Barney McCall and his childhood sweetheart Ellen Roche.

The family soon moved to Portland, where they opened a corner store.

They later moved to Gympie and Red Hill before settling at Scarborough. They again found themselves owning a corner store and Kerry made the peninsula his home for life.

Son Steve told the congregation stories of Kerry’s days at De La Salle College, how he mowed lawns at St Bernadette’s and how much

he loved sport, surfing, playing music and his horses.

“These were pastimes that he continued to love all the way through his life,” he said.

“Rugby League and Rugby Union were both a massive part of Kerry’s life. He was a solid player in his own respect and he idolised the legends of both codes.

He had so many close ties to the Redcliffe Dolphins Leagues Club, the Redcliffe Demons Rugby Union Club and the Brothers Rugby Union Club, of which there are a great deal of friends here today.

“The brotherhood that exists on and off the football field was something that Kerry prided himself on and I’m fortunate to say he instilled in his sons and their friends too.”

Steve said his father held many jobs throughout his life, but his work driving taxis would define who he was.

“A deadset character who loved a chat and being around down to earth people,” he said.

Jason ‘Rupert’ McCall said it would be hard to imagine life on the Redcliffe peninsula without his father.

“He was passionate about a lot of things. Bundaberg Rum wasn’t too far behind XXXX. He lived for his music and Bob Dylan was his main man. ‘Uncle Bob’ as he

called him, and in racing, it was Uncle Bart. In fact, the older Bob Dylan got, the more he started to look like Kerry,” Rupert said.

“He loved his footy, especially his Fijian rugby players and his Redcliffe Dolphins. Fishing with his great mate, Dennis Lees was another passion.

“He was truly unique.

To my mates, he wasn’t Rupert’s father, he was a mate of theirs … in his own right. It’s reflected in the messages I’ve received ... once or twice, people mistook him for being my brother and geez, didn’t he love that.”

He also loved feeding the butcher birds on his back steps at Margate, something he had done since he was a boy.

On the day he died, members of the family had gathered at Rupert’s house, at Paddington, when something unexpected happened on the back deck.

“All of a sudden – without warning – and not once have I seen it in 18 years of living there, a butcher bird flew in and landed on top of an empty chair. Pretty much in the middle of us all,” Rupert said.

“That bird didn’t flinch – it just sat there un-phased for about 90 seconds… looked at everyone gathered around him … gave a wink ... then upped and flew away.”

BRYN Evans’ book about airmen’s incredible escapes during World War II not only preserves their stories for future generations, but also serves as a reminder of what was sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today.

The Scarborough author’s foray into military history, and desire to preserve the stories of those who protected our way of life, began with a eulogy for his fatherin-law who had served in a British infantry regiment in campaigns through North Africa and Italy during World War II, where he was wounded but survived.

“I thought I should turn this into a book,” he recalled.

One book turned into three and his fourth, Airmen’s Incredible Escapes: Accounts of Survival in the Second World War, has recently been released and was the result of a conversation with a veteran, who shared details of a miraculous escape.

“The genesis of the book occurred eight years ago with a request by a veteran of Bomber Command,

“He asked me not to write an article of his experience, but to put it in a book with others of incredible survival, and it was an obligation that stayed with me.

“Three years ago, I placed a public appeal in The Sydney Morning Herald, and invited responses from veteran Allied airmen of the Second World War, or from their families.

“I expected possibly a handful of replies. I was inundated, receiving more than 100 amazing survival stories. Of the 50 recorded in Airmen’s Incredible Escapes, 20 relate to Australian aircrew, a number of whom are Queenslanders.”

One of the airmen featured was Lieutenant Colonel Malcom C Sponenbergh,

who was forced to ditch in Moreton Bay to avoid a collision with Lieutenant George L Austin during a training mishap in July 1942.

The pair had been flying P-39 Airacobra fighters, then based at a Petrie airfield, when one ditched in the bay and the other crashed into a Scarborough market garden near Scarborough State School.

Sponenbergh was rescued by local fisherman Thomas Larkin and his two sons.

Austin died on impact.

It is just one of 50 stories recounted in the book.

Mr Evans’ father served in RAF Bomber Command and spoke of looking at empty chairs in the mess each morning, of those who had been lost during the night’s operations.

“It was a nightmare everyone wished to forget.

But we must not forget.

The greatest generation left us a legacy, a priceless gift that we must always treasure,” he said.

He said it was a reminder, which is more important than ever, as the world

faced a new challenge in the form of COVID-19.

“I think the importance is to try and put yourself in the place of the people in the Second World War in so many countries, whether it’s here, Europe, UK, Asia or the Pacific. They were in a situation in many cases they didn’t know if they would be still alive the next day or whether their closest and dearest would still be alive the next day,” Mr Evans said.

“They couldn’t plan for the future, they didn’t know when the war would end, they didn’t know if we were going to win or lose or if we’d be overtaken by the Japanese or the Germans.”

For Mr Evans, the reaction of veterans and their families, and giving them a record to pass on to future generations, is what his work is all about.

“It’s a way of passing on that message. Everything we enjoy today is on the shoulders of those who sacrificed in the past,” he said.

The book is published by UK-based company Pen and Sword.

THE team at North Lakes Lions Club has been granting wishes for the past 10 years, creating experiences for people in need and providing practical assistance.

It started when Greg Milne approached the club, in 2010, looking for a service organisation to take on the project he thought could make a difference.

His original concept focused on elderly people in the community, who did not have the means or capacity to enjoy experiences that would add value to their lives, and the Lions club agreed to take it on if he joined.

Fast-forward 10 years and the Wish Tank project has been opened up to anyone in need, and Mr Milne has

been president of the club for the past two years. His term ends on June 30 and he will be replaced by Sean Hughes.

North Lakes Lions Club members have made a range of special experiences happen for people including a visit to Broncos training and opportunity to meet the players for two men with cerebral palsy, a memorable return to Warwick for an elderly Deception Bay woman, and a night to the theatre for woman with cancer.

Mr Milne is thrilled the program is still going strong after 10 years.

“We’ve got an incredible club of about 33 members, who have a desire or a heart to serve and that’s all it takes,” he said.

CABOOLTURE’S first postmaster has again taken his place at the post office counter – but not in a way you might expect.

When visitors press the bell for service, William Geddes pops up from behind the counter to tell his story and the history of his town.

Mr Geddes moved into the building, now at Caboolture Historical Village, in 1869, so the vision presented to ‘customers’ is obviously not the man himself but a strikingly realistic hologram.

It was unveiled by Caboolture Historical Village on April 29 and is the result of about eight months’ work by the historical society and Sydney-based firm LaserVision.

Caboolture Historical Society President Roger Dunstan hoped it would be huge attraction.

“It’s a new direction for us. This is the start of something,” he said.

“It’s relating more of the history to the visitors in a visual and verbal way.

“This is the first one and we hope to have more in the future.

“It’s a major change for the village and historical society. It’s what we needed.”

The society’s grants officer Stuart Eden said the project cost $20,000 and was possible after it received Arts Queensland funding.

“We’re very happy with the result. It was all done remotely during the lockdown. The first time they came to the village was to install it,” Mr Eden said.

He said when the society first decided to pursue the idea, members were keen to enhance an already striking display, not detract from it.

It was the perfect location for a hologram, with the right lighting and floorspace to make it work.

story had to relate to a real person and be historically accurate. Mr Geddes was the first postmaster and his story is fascinating,” Mr Eden said.

He owned hundreds of acres around Caboolture and donated the land St Lawrence’s Church was built on.

The “post office” building at Caboolture Historical Village was the annex of the original building and the spot where coaches pulled up to collect and unload the mail.

Mr Eden said there were plans to continue enhancing exhibits at the village.

“If we can do one or two of these things a year, in the right place with the right story – not just for entertainment – it will

broaden the demographic of people who come here,” he said.

“It will add a new dimension for all ages.”

Tactile element to work STORY KYLIE KNIGHT ARTIST Stephen Mills thrives on playing with colour and texture, which will be on show in abundance during his exhibition at the Old Fire Station Gallery this month.

The exhibition, titled Elements, will showcase his mixed media pieces from May 12 to June 6.

The Caboolture resident considers himself an experimental artist, someone who enjoys developing different techniques to bring a painting to life.

He loves using bright colours and giving his work an added element through texture.

“To me it means using lots, and lots, and lots of different techniques in the one work,” Mills said.

Some of these include using plastic wrap and toothbrushes to apply

paint, changing the consistency of the paint with water and ink, letting the paint run by standing the painting up before it dries and even dropping objects on a piece from a height.

While there are painters and poets in Mills’ family, he didn’t know he could paint until he found himself in an art class as part of his rehabilitation following a serious car crash in 2005.

I spent the next seven or eight months in hospital.

They told me I wasn’t going to walk again,” he said.

Art classes were part of his rehabilitation, designed to stimulate the nerves in his hands as he had lost

feeling in them.

It started with gluing items on boards, which Mills grew tired of pretty quickly.

“I went and bought some cheap acrylic paints. I was painting the textures on and gluing things on and building textures onto the boards,” he said.

His teacher bought a

piece from him for $20.

It was seen by one of her friends who commissioned Stephen to create a larger painting for him, and the former landscape gardener realised he might be onto something.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Mills is running a workshop, called Painting Sky with Attitude,

on May 16, at Redcliffe Art Society’s workshop space at the gallery. It is suitable for any level of artistic ability.

IN March, the Australian Pet Care Association announced that Canine Cough was presenting in various North Brisbane areas, and many veterinarians in the Moreton Bay Region have confirmed that they saw an increase in the cases presenting around this time.

All areas of Australia are susceptible to this virus, and sometimes a community outbreak occurs.

What is Canine Cough?

Canine Cough, or tracheobronchitis, is one of the most common respiratory diseases in dogs. It is an airborne virus, and whilst it is always around our communities, it tends to be seasonal with

an outbreak occurring and running its course over a period of several weeks.

It is very similar to the human cold or flu.

Does vaccination prevent your dog catching it?

No. Even if your dog is vaccinated, there is still some risk of infection.

Vaccination provides an excellent defence against Canine Cough and will reduce the severity of symptoms, giving your pet the best chance of a fast recovery if they do become infected.

IF THE launch event for a new coffee bean business is any indication, owner Anton Cavelli is onto a winner.

The Woody Point resident launched Cosa Nostra Coffee at Suttons Pavilion with the backing of coffee giant Phillip Di Bella last month and said he was already receiving orders from Victoria.

“We sold over $1000 in coffee beans at the event and made about 215 cups of coffee in two hours,” Mr Cavelli said.

The idea for the business was born from adversity – Mr Cavelli had been working as a barista when he broke his ankle and found himself unable to work.

Wanting to support his fiancé and her three children, Mr Cavelli turned to Mr Di Bella for guidance.

“I’ve always been passionate about coffee – I’m Italian, so I grew up with it on the stove.

“I’d wanted to be a barista and mentioned it to a few people, and one of them told me Phillip Di Bella was coming to the chamber (of commerce) to give a speech – I met him and then went and got a barista qualification.

“After I broke my ankle, I got back in touch.”

“Phil suggested I look into ecommerce – he said if I set it up right I could run

With the help of Mr Di Bella’s latest coffee venture, Coffee Commune, Mr Cavelli spent weeks researching coffee bean combinations to create

three bean blends – Kaders Remedy, Best Kept Secret and Smooth Operator.

“They’re imported from 30 different regions and the crema is thick, silky and golden,” he said of the beans used in Smooth Operator.

Brisbane City Pops returns STORY JODIE POWELL THE Brisbane City Pops Orchestra returns to the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre this month after an absence of more than two years.

Orchestra events manager Rita West said the 50-piece orchestra was delighted to return to the Moreton Bay Region with a show filled with music from the world’s most-loved musicals.

“We have had such a dreary year with COVID, we wanted to present shows

with a bit of a bang,” Mrs West said.

“We have a wonderful following and we know exactly what our audiences enjoy.”

Accompanying the orchestra will be the Seven Sopranos.

“We did perform together at Redcliffe in 2018 and it was booked out – it’s by popular demand that we have asked them to return,” Mrs West said.

“The music we have chosen for them they perform absolutely brilliantly.”

Another Op’nin’ Another Show was to have been staged at the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre last year, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of all the orchestra’s shows.

“Another Op’nin’ Another

Show was not really inspired by COVID – we had planned it for last year − but it’s absolutely appropriate, a wonderful selection of music to bring people out again,” Mrs West said.

The orchestra will present a selection of Andrew LloydWebber’s most beautiful melodies, as well as the music of Jerome Robbins.

Formed in 1973, the Brisbane City Pops Orchestra is considered Brisbane’s leading community orchestra, Mrs West said.

Explore edible garden trail STORY KYLIE KNIGHT IF YOU’VE tried growing fruit and vegetables in your garden at home, without success, it might be worth taking a drive to Samford on May 16 and meandering along The Samford Edible Garden Trail.

The trail is a chance to tour eight inspiring gardens and pick the brains of the hosts, so you take some useful tips and tricks home with you.

The idea, brought to life by four Samford mums, was first hatched last year and aimed to open up local gardens to visitors in a bid to share knowledge about growing food.

A global pandemic forced them to rethink the concept and they instead did the legwork for keen gardeners, featuring a garden every day for two weeks online using videos, and welcoming questions.

Founder Susanne Englehard said the initiative now had a following across South East Queensland.

“We’re going to continue that because we have a wider audience now, but now we’ve come back to the original idea of a one-day annual event,” she said.

“We’ve got a team of people behind this and we’ve been wanting this to happen and it

feels like a real community event, so it’s very exciting for us to be able to see it come together.”

Green thumbs, brown thumbs and everyone in between will have the chance to tour eight productive gardens on May 16 from 9am-3pm.

“Each one is unique and they’re very spectacular. It’s an opportunity to be inspired by seeing these gardens but it’s also the opportunity to speak to the host,” Ms Englehard said. “It’s an opportunity for people to ask questions and that was one of the biggest motivators for me.

“It’s the best way to learn … an exchange of information.

“Locals can see what grows well in our area.

We’re encouraging people to grow a little bit of food in their own backyard.”

The trail is also supporting small- scale farmers and encouraging

people to buy from them.

“That’s really important to us.

We have a unique area here and want to connect people with our farmers,” she said.

Visitors can also do this via four local cafes and restaurants, which will be showcasing local produce on their menus that day.

Pause Restaurant will be offering a three-course meal using 100 per cent local produce, Little Tree Bake and Brewhouse will be selling a soup, The Latin Shack Café will have a pizza, Samford Patisserie will create a pastry and will be offering a free cup of coffee for Edible Garden Trail ticket holders.

The Open Day aims to be a day out for the family.

There will be a kids’ treasure hunt, with clues at each of the open gardens, opportunities to taste homegrown produce, and plenty of other ways for them to get their hands dirty and get involved.

• Cracked pepper to taste • Salad: lettuce, cherry tomatoes, red onion and cucumber • Four rounds of pita bread • Extra virgin olive oil spray

Place the peanut butter, curry powder, egg and mince in a large bowl and season with sea salt and cracked pepper.

Mix well to combine. Using clean, damp hands mould a heaped tablespoon of beef around a wooden skewer into a 7cm long sausage.

Repeat with remaining beef mixture and skewers.

Barbecue or grill, turning to brown evenly until cooked through. This should take 6-7 minutes.

Salad: Combine lettuce with chopped cherry tomatoes, sliced red onion and sliced cucumber in a bowl.

Pita wedges: Preheat oven 180C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Cut the pita rounds into wedges. Lay each onto prepared tray. Lightly spray each side with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt. Bake for 12-15 minutes until they are golden brown and crisp.

• ½ cup crunchy peanut butter • 2 tsp curry powder • 1 egg • 500g lean beef mince • Sea salt to taste

• 2L vegetable broth or reduced salt stock • 200ml light coconut cream • 1 sweet potato • 1 carrot • ½ bunch kale • ½ cup corn kernels

Peel sweet potato and carrot and cut into large chunks.

Remove stems and slice kale.

In a large pot or deep saucepan, heat the olive oil, ginger, garlic, shallots, harissa and curry powder. Saute until fragrant.

Add the sweet potato, carrot and broth and bring to the boil. Then simmer on low heat for 30 minutes.

Stir in the coconut cream and corn kernels and simmer for another 10 minutes.

Add salt and pepper to taste before serving.

IN A bid to give the Queensland tourism industry a boost, the State Government and Brisbane Economic Development Agency are giving Queenslanders the chance to secure one of 30,000 vouchers to spend with local operators.

The vouchers, on offer via the Brisbane Holiday Dollars campaign are redeemable in the greater Brisbane area including Moreton Bay Region. They can be used to claim 50% of the total cost of accommodation or experiences up to the value of $100.

The ballot for vouchers has closed, but successful recipients are being urged to spend them in the Moreton Bay Region.

Moreton Bay Region Mayor Peter Flannery said this was an important opportunity for the region to shine in the next few months.

“I want everyone landing at Brisbane airport or driving the Bruce to consider the Moreton Bay Region a ‘must see’ destination in South East

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Brisbane Holiday Dollars campaign would pump millions of dollars back into the economy and help tourism operators doing it tough.

“We’ve seen how successful this program has been in Cairns – supporting local businesses and local jobs at a time the industry needs it most," she said.

“This will support local jobs and give Queenslanders an even bigger incentive to holiday at home and support their mates."

Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said Brisbane Holiday Dollars was one part of the Palaszczuk

Government’s comprehensive $800 million tourism support strategy.

“The Palaszczuk Government is working shoulder to shoulder with Queensland tourism to help the industry rebuild and rebuild better for the future,” he said.

The vouchers can only be used

by Queenslanders in Queensland, with Brisbane Registered Tourism Operators.

Operators must have an Australian Tourism Data Warehouse (ATDW) listing, a bookable platform and be COVID ‘good to go’ compliant to be part of the program.

Recipients have four weeks to make their bookings from May 6 for travel between May 6 and August 15, 2021. For a full list of participating Moreton Bay Region experience and accommodation providers head to visitmoretonbayregion.com.au/brisbaneholidaydollars from May 6.

AFTER the rainy Easter weekend, I thought I’d address weather conditions and their affect on our fishing.

Fish live in an eat or be eaten world and are constantly looking for food or shelter.

Beautiful as crystal-clear days and nights are, especially during SEQ winters, these aren’t necessarily optimum conditions for fish to feed.

Clear water and bright sunshine can mean that they’re very exposed and easily seen by predators, in the water and from above.

Nervous fish often stop feeding in favour of staying sheltered.

With most fish, their eyes are on the sides and towards the top of their heads, which in many cases means they’re designed to attack or feed from behind, to the side, or from below. As their eyes aren’t positioned to see something coming from underneath, this is when they can be at their most vulnerable. In clear water, this can make them reluctant to leave the bottom.

Colouring and markings can reduce this “from below” vulnerability in many species with a light-coloured belly not giving a distinctive silhouette for a predator underneath.

Scales, stripes or spots also break up silhouettes from the side. A darker top colouring, seen against the water’s surface from above, provides camouflage against hunting seabirds’ eyes.

These factors affect us how?

On clear days and in shallow waters, it’s better to fish in shaded areas or tight against structure. We should also consider moving to slightly deeper water, where the fish

aren’t as visible or exposed.

Overcast or rainy days in shallow water can significantly increase feeding activity.

Windy, rough weather, WHEN SAFE, agitates the seabed, stirs up food and greatly reduces exposure to potential predators.

Low light conditions, such as dawn, dusk and night, are also premium times to fish as these are definite peak feeding times and once again, the fish aren’t as exposed or vulnerable and will feed much more readily.

Consistently successful anglers fish when conditions suit the fish.

A nice day’s a bonus.

• Tailor becoming more consistent all around the peninsula, off the rocky points and on the inshore reefs.

• Squire, snapper and grassy sweetlip on the rocky points and inshore reefs.

• Bream on the beaches, rocky points and on the inshore reefs.

• Bream, flathead and some whiting in Hays Inlet, the Pine River, Scarborough Spit and foreshore, and the mouth of the canals.

• Squid becoming more consistent off the jetties, points and inshore reefs.

• Mud crabs in creeks and rivers.

• Prawn in the creek mouths and the inshore bays, but can be a little inconsistent.

• Extremely good numbers of longtail tuna inside Moreton Bay. • Snapper and tuskies on the artificial reefs inside Moreton.

• The odd spanish mackerel off the cape and wide of the islands.

Ask CATCHING surf worms is very much a part of many fishing families’ beach holidays and a key bait resource for many avid surf fishers.

They are a favoured bait for many fish along beaches but particularly sand whiting. They are also sold as a frozen/cured product or live at several bait shops.

Surf worms belong to a family of marine worms called Onuphidae with the two main species caught in Queensland being the king surf worm (Australonuphis teres) and the slimy surf worm (Australonuphis parateres).

They are widely distributed along the eastern and southeastern coasts of Australia from about Yeppoon right down and around the coast into South Australia. All surf beaches from the Gold Coast to Fraser Island have populations of surf worms.

Although there is uncertainty, large king surf worms are also thought to live in deeper water, well away from the surf zone, and perhaps at depths down to 2000m.

The maximum length of surf worms is about 3m! Now that is a big worm. Sexual maturity is reached at 42cm in length for the King and 39cm for the Slimy and they are presumed to be repeat spawners throughout their life. Spawning is thought to occur throughout the year although there may be seasonal

peaks. Surf worms can live to approximately nine years of age.

Surf worms build temporary burrows by secreting mucous onto the sand to create a thin tube to live in. They prefer the swash zone on gently sloping beaches. Their distribution on a beach is highly patchy. They can be in dense concentrations (> 15 worm per metre squared) which are separated by large areas of very few worms. They spend most of their time vertically in the sand but move horizontally towards food.

Surf worms have eyespots as juveniles but lose them as they become adults and rely on smell after that. It is this acute sense of smell which means they respond rapidly to odour in seawater such as that provided by fish frames. They naturally consume bivalves such as the eugarie, crustaceans and seaweeds.

Choosing the right agent Many people say that choosing an agent can be the most difficult part of the selling process. It´s pretty easy to make mistakes when you sell, so here are just a few things I think sellers should consider before signing a listing agreement.

1) Choose your agent based on whom you believe is best suited to the job. Focus on the end result of maximizing your homes true market value not just an Agent’s commission rate. The final sale price is most likely to have the greatest impact on what ends up in your bank account once the sale is done and dusted.

2) Research results. Doing research is easier now than it ever has been. Many websites including realestate.com.au have an Agent Search function where you can see how an Agent has performed in your area over time. Is the Agent you are talking to really as successful as they say? Focus on finding a balance between volume of sales and average sale price achieved. Median or average sale price achieved is in my view just as important (if not more so) than pure sales volume.

3) Understand what your home is worth before you go to market. Understand the rationale an Agent has used to determine your homes likely sales price. Be careful not to under-estimate your homes real value. In this market it´s so easy to do. SOLD in one or two days is often the first sign a property may have been sold well below its real potential.

4) On the flip-side, even in this market its easy to get too greedy. You want to avoid over-estimating expectations. This may effectively kill nearly any chance you have of achieving fair-market value. However; if you think Auction fixes the pricing dilemma then think again. You still need to set a reserve. If it´s too low you may sell too cheaply and if your home does not achieve what you want under the hammer what strategy then?

5) Ignore a balanced marketing approach at your peril. Failing to appropriately market your property can see you selling your home for much less than it deserves.

I´ve always believed that choosing the right Agent and focusing on a balanced, common-sense approach will typically get you more and isn´t that what every seller wants? Give me a call.

CAPTAIN’S CALL TAKING on Tweed at home on a Saturday night, the stage was set for a cracking game.

The effort from our boys was outstanding, but unfortunately we fell just short again. In a game that ebbed and flowed, we controlled large parts of it but switched off at times and missed key opportunities to capitalise on points.

It was a return to footy for Brayden Dee that saw him named Man of the Match and some solid performances from Jackson Frei and our forward pack as a whole.

It’s been a frustrating start to the season but, after losing three close games, we are determined to continue to work hard and grow as a team to turn things around.

A well-timed week off for the long weekend allowed us to refresh and work hard on the simple parts of our game we need to improve.

Next round sees us take on Townsville Blackhawks at Moreton Daily Stadium on Sunday, May 9 at 2.10pm. On equal points, both teams possess a heap of talent and will be desperate to equal up with three wins and three losses for the season.

Improving individually and continuing the effort as a team will be the focus leading into this one.

Get down and support the boys as we look to get a hard-fought win against a quality team.

JOSH Beehag has grown up wearing the red and white Dolphins’ jersey and says the motivation to play remains the same.

For him it is about mateship, being part of a team and the physicality of the game.

The talented winger started playing league, when he moved to the Redcliffe peninsula from New South Wales and discovered it was the footy of choice among the boys at Scarborough State School.

“It just started at school on the good old Scarborough oval – we had some pretty intense lunchtime games and that translated over to Redcliffe which is why I wanted to start playing here,” Beehag said.

He signed up as a 10-yearold and has only missed one season – 2020, when the Intrust Super Cup season was canned due to COVID-19. But, through the Brighton Roosters, he found a way to keep playing the game he loves.

“I met some really good people and had a lot of fun.

It was a bit of a frustrating year, personally, with no Dolphins,” he said.

The start of the 2021 season could not come fast enough, but suspension for a crusher tackle in the trials forced Beehag to miss the first two games.

“It is good to be back. I

Beehag is now working as an engineer but still has serious goals on the field. “I’d love to keep playing for as long as I can. It’s all going to depend on how my body holds up. My goals … I’ve won some Grand Finals but I’ve lost two National Finals,” he said.

“I’d like to get a National Final added to my bag.

Also, in the back of my mind is NRL, but older players don’t get picked up as well as the younger players do. That’s always a dream … we’ll see what happens.”

The 26-year-old agreed being around the club for 16 years and being one of the older members of the team gave him an opportunity to guide younger players.

“I’m not always the best teacher and I don’t want to overstep because some of them are as good as me.

I try to impart some of my knowledge, where I can, and try to help them develop their game,” he said.

Nate on national podium STORY NICK CROCKFORD NATE Wood took his speedway go-kart career to new heights at the SKAA 202021 Australian Championships in Tamworth last month.

Students’ are four-some in qualifying series REDCLIFFE State High School’s Open’s will today bid to join their Year 7, 8 and 9 colleagues in South East Queensland’s top schools’ rugby league competitions.

The Opens (Years 11-12), from RSHS’s Program of Excellence, face Alexandra Hills at Wynnum, with the winner going into Broncos’ Langer Trophy.

Redcliffe’s Year 9s swept through their qualifiers beating Bellbird Park 26-6, Stretton College 14-0, Ipswich 6-4 and Mabel Park 6-0.

However, they had to dig deep in two close matches to make the Hancock Cup. “The boys were fantastic to qualify,” said Scott Murray, the RSHS Program of Excellence Director. “There were close games and the boys had to work really hard to get the results.”

The Under 7s are in the Broncos Old Boys Trophy, Redcliffe State High School’s Year 9s after winning through to the Hancock Cup. Year 8s the Renouf Shield.

The first rounds of Redcliffe Golf Club’s Matchplay Championships are being held this month.

A and C Grades start on May 15 and continue May 23. B Grade begins on May 16 with round two on May 22. The finals are on June 20.

Search goes overseas after commanding victory STORY NICK CROCKFORD THE search for Liam Wilson’s next opponent, in his quest for a world title shot, is going overseas.

Wilson, who lives at Griffin, moved into the top 15 rankings of two world boxing authorities (IBF and WBO) with a commanding points victory over Francis Chua in Wollongong last month.

Steve Scanlon, Wilson’s manager, said there were

fighters in Australia who may be keen to take on the country’s top super featherweight.

Experienced Luke Jackson and Bilal Dib are two of them, but Scanlon said Wilson’s team was starting to look abroad for a fight in June or July.

That will depend on the extent of an injury to Wilson’s right hand, suffered the third round of his 10-round win over Chua.

The 25-year-old who

trains at All Star Boxing Academy, Bray Park, “effectively put the hand away” said Scanlon and still won convincingly.

Two judges gave Wilson eight and Chua two of the 10 rounds, while the third official awarded the former Caboolture boxer seven of the rounds.

Ben Harrington, who trains Wilson at the All Star Academy in PCYC Pine Rivers, scored the fight 8-2 or even 9-1 in rounds.

Harrington said Wilson prepared for 10 rounds and but for the injury, the contest may have been quite different.

US drivers may cross the Pacific to race later this year and in 2022 the series may involve six races in Australia and six in the US.

“I’ll be in on that,” said Shaun, who also has seven races this year in the Trans Am (TA2) muscle car series.

“When we hit a ramp we need to have the vehicle settled,” said Shaun, “if it is loaded one side or the other

it can be a world of pain.

“Want to land on the back wheels or front wheels. If you land on all four, it’s like someone kicking you up the back side. It hurts!”

The Stadium Trucks series has been going four years. Shaun had two races, at Perth and the Gold Coast, towards the end of the first season in 2018.

In 2019 he said racing authorities almost banned the series because of concerns over the height of jumps and fencing. Those issues were addressed and then COVID hit the 2020 series.

The trucks have a Chevy LS3 motor, Turbo 400 gearbox and 26 inches of travel on the suspension.

MORETON Bay Raptors are inviting the region to come-and-try gridiron football at their Deception Bay headquarters.

A series of six free comeand-try sessions are underway for a sport which club president Jason Geraghty likened to ‘chess on a football field’.

“Gridiron is a sport for everyone,” he said, “we cannot all be great athletes, but there is a place for all players, regardless of size.

“The level of competition is increasing. It is a think-

ing player’s game - chess on a football field.”

Raptors are back in training for the 2021 season, which starts in August, hoping to see player numbers increase again and more talent emerge.

The club already has players who have represented Queensland, Australia and been invited to play in the US. Raptors will field teams in Youth (ages 10-13), Junior (ages 14-17), Men (18 and over) and Women (18 and over) in Gridiron Queensland competitions.

The club, based at Maine Tce, Deception Bay, is hop-

ing player numbers will match last season, which were tracking towards 200 when COVID struck.

“Last year was bad for everyone, but we got through it,” said Geraghty, whose son and nephews play, while his brother is treasurer and a coach. “Our juniors were competitive and will be again this year.”

Geraghty said club taught “football and discipline”.

“We have players who have been at the club five or six years and we are producing a lot of good athletes. We have also spent a lot of time getting good

(playing) gear, creating a good facility and revamping the clubhouse.

“Moreton Bay Regional Council has been extraordinary in its help and support.”

Raptors can provide most of the kit needed (helmet, pads etc) which collectively comes to around $500.

Junior pay $475 registration for the season which includes playing gear and a shirt, which they keep.

by Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association (RLSA) Under 14 Girls has brought the Queensland Championship back to the peninsula.

Redcliffe beat Toowoomba in the Grand Final to lift the title in Maryborough

last month. The girls were awarded the Best Defensive Team for conceding only seven runs throughout the tournament.

Redcliffe’s Under 14 Boys were also in fine form at their eight-team state titles, held at the club’s Boardman Rd diamonds, but were beaten by Toowoom-

ba in the Grand Final.

Of the 25 athletes selected for the Redcliffe representative teams, five boys and nine girls were named in the Under 14 state squad.

“The results for the boys and girls, from our point of view, were exceptional,” RLSA President Carrie Te Wani said. “The players

have been so dedicated to their development and it was demonstrated in the way they conducted themselves on the diamond.

“High praise to our girls for achieving this honour.

We will continue to grow our junior development, focusing on expectations that players can meet and

setting goals hard work can achieve. I think the large increase in selections to Queensland squads from six players in 2020 to 14 in 2021 validates this for us.”

RLSA will host the Softball QLD Masters from August 6-8 and the Softball QLD Under 18 Girls State Championships from October 1-3.

PENINSULA Power will today find out the next challenge in their quest to reach the FFA Cup’s national round of 32.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD SHAUN Richardson is an “adrenalin junkie” – that’s why loves racing “11 other maniacs” over jumps in 1.3 tonne Stadium Trucks.

The 53-year-old from Scarborough is one of only 12 drivers invited to the 2021 Australian Stadium Truck Series.

Races are fast (speeds of

225-230km/h), furious (it’s a contact sport) and the trucks fly (a distance of 200 feet was recorded at Perth) off track ramps.

Shaun was second, fourth and third in round one races in Tasmania last month.

“I’ve always been an adrenalin junkie, jumping out of planes, parachuting,

I’ve always needed the next thing,” said Shaun, of Road Rage Industries, in Kippa-Ring. “As a schoolkid I always wanted to be a stuntman. I’m very lucky I’ve done that with (TV’s) Top Gear and The Grand Tour. Now I’m doing this.

“It’s like 11 other maniacs that you’re racing against.

“I don’t get scared. I’ve done worse things. The only time I get nervous is the day before thinking have I packed everything I need?”

There is a growing demand for the Stadium Trucks at major race meetings, such as the V8s, as they “tick all the boxes for the younger generations”,

said Shaun.

“It is competitive, we’re trying to win a national championship, but it is an entertainment sport.

“At drivers’ meetings we’re told we can give people little taps… but don’t hurt yourself.”
