DECEPTION BAY singer-songwriter Tayiha Grant is a finalist in this year’s Queensland Music Awards.

Tayiha will find herself on stage at the Fortitude Music Hall performing at the awards ceremony in two weeks’ time.

Her latest single Hollywood Dreamer, is out on April 19 friends to celebrate her 16th birthday last week.

“I’m very nervous – I have performed here and there at little concerts, but nothing like this,” she said.

“It’s very exciting – I found out about two weeks ago, but I had to hide it.

“I was shocked because the one I got nominated for, No Happy Ending, I wrote when I was 14 – I didn’t expect an old song to resurface.”

Tayiha said No Happy Ending was about toxic relationships. “Anyone can relate to it because we always have negative people in our lives we have to cut strings with.”

Tayiha wrote her first song when she was eight,

having started giving concerts for family and friends when she began singing lessons at six. She cites Taylor Swift, Whitney Houston and Jessica Mauboy among her influences.

“I like the song-writing side of Taylor Swift and I’m a huge fan of Whitney Houston’s voice,” she said.

“Obviously my song-writing has improved, so it’s exciting to have new stuff coming out.”

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE sound of the waves and smell of the sea will be with World War II and Korean War veteran Peter Craig as he takes his place among those gathered for Redcliffe’s Anzac Day Dawn Service on Sunday.

Mr Craig, who served with the Royal Navy and then the Royal Australian Navy says it is an important reminder of the perils of war.

“It makes you think that you hope it never happens again. War’s no good for anybody,” Mr Craig said.

“It’s not a bright outlook to see men go away and not come home.”

The 98-year-old, of Kippa-Ring, served with the Royal Navy during World War II hunting German U-boats and was in the English Channel with “thousands” of ships waiting for D-Day before heading to Tokyo Bay where he would anchor while “peace was signed”. His service came after two previous attempts to enlist, as an 18 and 19-year-old. On both occasions his application was refused because he was in a reserved occupation.

When he tried again at the age of 20, he finally had his chance to follow his father and brother into service.

“It was just the fashion when the war started. All the young fellows thought they’d be brave,” he said.

“I don’t know whether you were scared or what. You never knew what was going to happen, when you were chasing U-boats. Especially when they used to operate in packs, maybe six, seven or eight all together so they could get amongst convoys and cause havoc. When you go to sea, you’re on edge all the time.”

He was posted to the HMS Woodcock and recalls the moment the crew destroyed a prized supply U-boat which was vital to the German attack.

On Mr Craig’s 21st birthday, the Woodcock was badly damaged during a battle in the North Atlantic and on another occasion she was accidentally rammed by the HMS Venus and again had to be repaired in Hull. “We left Hull, back up near the north of Scotland, this time went down to Liverpool in England. Then they said you’re going to the Pacific,” he said.

“We got to the Pacific and Manus Island and were there when the British Pacific fleet came up from Australia and the fleet started moving north into

the war zone.”

The ship was in the Philippines, when they received word the war was over.

“Woodcock up anchored and headed straight off to Tokyo Bay. In Tokyo Bay, there were lots of ships and the three Americans on board were taken off the Woodcock and they went straight to the battleship Missouri where peace was signed. That afternoon, Woodcock entered Yokohama and we were the first British ship to tie up in Japan after the war.”

He recalls the crew standing on the bow saluting

Mr Craig returned to his old job after the war and was considering re-joining the Royal Navy, when he heard the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) was looking for 4000 former RN personnel to join its ranks. He was with the RAN for six years, serving in Korea, and also spent time as an instructor for the National Service.

“I always had a fascination for the sea. I respect the sea very much. People don’t realise the perils in the water,” he said.

THE ongoing threat of COVID-19 has forced Redcliffe RSL to scale back Anzac Day commemorations to one service and it is still urging people to Light Up the Dawn at home.

The Dawn Service will be the only official commemoration on April 25 and it will be held under a COVID-Safe plan, with limited invitation-only seating in the official area.

It will be reserved for veterans, people with mobility issues and invited guests. Redcliffe RSL Vice-President Cheryl Barrett said the changes aimed to keep everyone in the community safe.

This year’s march is for veterans only. Family members representing veterans or accompanying them will not be permitted. Those taking part will

need to register at Baker St using a QR code at 4.30am.

The march will start at 5.15am ahead of the service at 5.30am.

QR codes will be available at Anzac Place for those in the official area, and others attending outside this area are encouraged to register.

The service will end by 6.30am and the general public can lay wreaths after this time until 7.30am.

The Dawn Service will be broadcast live on radio 99.7FM from 5.30am and replayed at noon.

Parking will provided at Pearson Park, Klingner Rd. There will not be a shuttle bus. Disability parking will be available across from Redcliffe Police Station.

Tribute to those who served REDCLIFFE RSL members joined with Air Force cadets from Scarborough to honour service men and women laid to rest at Redcliffe Cemetery on Sunday.

It is a tribute the RSL carries out every year, but this year’s commemoration was without its usual service due to COVID-19 fears.

They instead spent more than an hour placing poppies on the graves of servicemen and women, with the help of more than 50 cadets.

“It was a beautiful day.

We made sure that all our service members that have been buried there did get a poppy in recognition of their service,” Mrs Hemers said.

THE chief executive officer of an organisation behind a Deception Bay Op Shop has pleaded with the community to donate goods responsibly.

Terry O’Neill from Link Vision, which has run the Bailey Rd shop for more than 25 years, said people leaving items when the shop was closed caused the charity great difficulty.

Mr Bailey said while Link Vision was extremely grateful for the community’s generosity, damage caused by people rummaging through the items before staff could collect them often meant donations had to be sent to the tip rather than raising money to help people with a vision impairment.

Seventy-five percent of the charity’s income comes from its Op Shops.

“We need donations – we get good donations, we sell them and we can continue our valuable work – we don’t want people to stop donating,” he said.

The deputy chairman of Charitable Recycling Australia, Mr O’Neill said research showed only about

what they could donate, and while goods did not have to be perfect, they should be usable.

“Our message is simple – if it’s something you would give to a friend, then it’s worth donating.”

It is now up to residents and visitors to do their bit to make sure they win.

There are 37 towns in the running for the awards, hosted by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC), recognising and celebrating towns that offer an amazing visitor experience.

QTIC Chief Executive Daniel Gschwind said the awards showcased the great and diverse destinations in Queensland.

A REVIEW into accessible tourism in the Moreton Bay Region has found while there are accommodation options and experiences that tick the boxes, there is a need to do more.

The Moreton Bay Region Accessible Tourism Review was conducted by Spinal Life Australia on behalf of Moreton Bay Re-

gional Council and Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism. It included field visits to Bribie Island, the Redcliffe peninsula, the hinterland and other key locations in the region.

Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism General Manager Tourism and Investment Oriana Wyrozebska said the report was insightful and demonstrated that the region was an

accessible region, to some extent, but had work to do.

“We as an industry have an opportunity to learn from Spinal Life to better understand how we can make changes within our own businesses to welcome guests into our products and our experiences by making them more welcoming and more accessible,” Ms Wyrozebska said.

HOONING motorists have been urged to think about whether their actions are worth putting their own lives and those of others at risk.

The reality check comes from Moreton Bay Crime Prevention Unit SenConstable Jo Arthur, who said there had been a spike in complaints about hooning across the region.

Police define hooning as anti-social behaviour conducted in a motor vehicle – a car, van or motorbike – such as speeding, street racing, burnouts and playing loud music from a car stereo.

Briefs Pool upgrade boosts efficiency AN upgrade to filtration and heating systems at the Redcliffe War Memorial pool will save energy and improve reliability.

The complex’s three pools – the 50m, learnto-swim and toddler pools – are currently served by a single filtration system.

As part of the project, a separate filtration, sanitation and heating system will be built for the learn-to-swim pool and the filtration system attached to the 50m and toddlers’ pools will be modified.

An officers’ report to Moreton Bay Regional Council said the upgrade would improve the filtration system’s performance and reliability.

Bluey & Bingo to headline STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE program for Redcliffe KiteFest has been announced as tickets go on sale and little ones get excited about seeing headliners Bluey and Bingo on the Sesame Lane Main Stage.

The favourites of the small screen will be on the big stage for two shows each day of KiteFest, which runs from September 11 and 12 at Clontarf’s Pelican Park from 9am-4pm.

They are just one of the acts on the Sesame Lane Main Stage joining a lineup of children’s and musical entertainment throughout the event.

Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth said the government would provide $130 million in funding during round two.

“Our Government provided $128 million in round one to support some 3000 travel agents who continued to serve their customers. We are now providing additional support via round two and I encourage local travel agents to check their eligibility and apply for funding,” he said.

Games a chance to ‘win’ MORETON Bay Region could be a major winner if Brisbane wins the race to host the 2032 Olympic Games.

State Member for Bancroft Chris Whiting said a successful bid would mean “a sharp focus on the delivery of projects already in the pipeline”.

Brisbane has been named the “preferred host” for the 2032 Olympics by the International Olympic Committee, but the final decision will come from a full IOC vote.

Mr Whiting said getting the Games would be a “boon to the Moreton Bay area as it would help drive the delivery of infrastructure projects”.

“We have great projects in various stages of planning and development such as the Moreton Connector (North-South Arterial) and

duplication of the Sunshine Coast railway,” he said.

“State and Federal Governments have already started the Deception Bay Rd overpass over the highway and the $620 million highway widening from Caboolture to Steve Irwin Way. “One of my biggest issues will be widening of Deception Bay Road between the highway and Lipscombe Rd which is the only part of the road at a single lane either way. These are just some of the infrastructure projects we have in the pipeline and I will be following up on all of them to make our community ‘Olympics ready’.”

Mr Whiting would also like to see a second bridge over the Pine River and is keen for the region’s local sports groups to benefit from the Olympics.

Dr Joel‘s milestone on ride for research STORY NICK CROCKFORD REDCLIFFE Hospital’s Dr Joel Dulhunty and his wife Naoni are more than halfway through their “big ride for research”.

The duo has, at the time of writing, covered more than 1500km of a 40-day fundraising marathon from Cairns to Brisbane via Cooktown and the Atherton tablelands.

They left Carmila, south of Mackay, at the start of this week, saying “life on the open road is going well”

Dr Dulhunty, the hospital’s Director of Research and Medical Education, is on track to cover between 60-100km per day.

The ride’s goal is to raise funds towards a target of $120,000 for a senior university researcher at Redcliffe Hospital for three years.

“As the weather is hot and humid, we often start our ride early in the morning to get as many kilometres under our belt before the heat of the midday sun,” Dr Dulhunty said.

“The weather has been a mixed blessing. In general, it has been hot, humid and relatively dry, which was fortunate as heavy rain would have made the Bloomfield Track impassable.”

Dr Dulhunty said one of the toughest days was on a remote inland route from Cooktown with a “straight

stretch of 60km with no shade or place to stop and rest. The last 10km to our stop for the evening seemed to take forever.

“We have had a number of rainy days on the Atherton Tablelands and from Innisfail to Mission Beach and they were a welcome relief from the heat.”

Dr Dulhunty is donating $1 for every kilometre he rides and has sent a “big thank you” to those who have donated to the Ride for Research. More than $4000 has been raised so far.

THE Komo Hotel reopened this week, with a $3 million new look, menu and focus on welcoming the diverse casual dining market.

Queensland Regional Manager Leisure for Lewis Land Group Chris Allison has been overseeing the project, which began almost six months ago, and is looking forward to sharing the refurbished venue with customers.

The changes include a new and improved terrace, which better frames stunning views of Moreton Bay out to Moreton Island, a refurbished main bar and lounge, new gaming area and sports bar, and charcoal rotisserie in the kitchen. The nightclub has been removed to create a more welcoming sports bar.

Key to the design is creating smaller areas within the overall floorplan, which appeal to the growing casual events market.

Customers will be able to order food from anywhere within the hotel and there have been big changes to the menu.

“The food concept is probably the biggest change.

There’s a charcoal rotisserie and it’s the only one of its kind in the region.

It’s something in Sydney that’s very popular,” Mr Allison said.

New grills have been added to the kitchen and the focus will be on ‘doing pretty simple food really well’.

Another notable addition is a mural featuring pink flowers and a pelican wearing sunglasses. It’s a nod to the hotel’s home.

Team effort to protect your home STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE Stevie Redback Pest Control brand is strong and the business has grown substantially in the past 20 years, but owner Steve Hughes is most proud of its connection with community.

Mr Hughes and wife Melinda started the business in 1999 after he spent time working for a north Brisbane pest control business and felt he could offer a more professional service.

Allan Holland joined the team in 2000, when the couple had just three technicians and two administration staff. They now have 16 vehicles and a total of 22 staff. Mr Holland is now Operations Manager.

Customer service still drives Ian STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WHEN Ian Moroney started selling cars at Village Motors in 1991, customers could buy a new Nissan Pulsar for about $3000.

Much has changed since then but Mr Moroney’s approachable style has not diminished as he prepares to celebrate 30 years with the company on May 1.

It is a style that has not only made him Village Motors’ No.1 salesperson for many years, but also brought customers back time and time again.

“I’m finding I’m getting a lot of customers … where you sold their father a car 30 years ago, the boys are coming in … 28-year-old tradies looking for a ute,” Mr Moroney said.

“It doesn’t happen all the time but there might be two or three sales every month from referrals.”

The woman who interviewed him for the job and has appreciated his loyalty and friendship for 30 years, Marlene Newcombe, said Mr Moroney’s customer service did not end when the car left the dealership.

“He sends Christmas cards out to all his custom-

Mr Moroney had worked in retail, real estate and another car dealership before he joined the Village Motors family.

So, what has held his interest for 30 years?

“I think a lot of it is interaction with people and being able to communicate.

The best way to find out about your customer is to ask them questions,” he explained.

In his view, it is important to be authentic, approachable and ask the right questions so you give customers the information they need.

“The older you get, the better you get at it. You’ve got to be able to treat people with respect, especially women.”

years ago, and many customers shopped online before they contacted a dealership. It has been the biggest change to the job.

Ms Newcombe said Mr Moroney had difficulty

adopting computer technology in the beginning.

“Thirty years ago, everything was handwritten, contracts were handwritten. When we changed over to computers, Ian did

struggle with that. It was a different era,” she said.

It is technology he is now grateful he embraced and his tip for newcomers to the industry is to work for a privately-owned compa-

ny which valued training and nurtured its staff.

“In a company like this, it’s family orientated, you learn a lot more and you get training. There’s not many like Village,” he said.

Gil and Fay Rounsefell on their 60th wedding anniversary in 2009

Sad farewell for Fay Rounsefell

IT was the end of an era in Redcliffe, when long-time resident Fay Rounsefell died on March 23.

She had lived on the peninsula since 1945, when her family moved to the area from Bundaberg where they had settled after moving from Cairns.

It was on the peninsula and at the Redcliffe Rollerdrome that Fay’s future was sealed, when she met Gil Rounsefell.

The couple married in September 1949 and in 1950, moved to Dix St where they lived for the next 37 years until their move to Clontarf in 1986.

Mrs Rounsefell was actively involved in various community organisations,

including as the inaugural publicity officer for the Redcliffe Hospital Auxiliary when it first started; a member of the Red Cross in the days when members worked alongside the hospital doctor to man the local blood bank; a driver for Meals on Wheels and an enabler with the Crossroads ministry for the disabled.

She was also supportive of her husband’s Masonic membership, spending 25 years working alongside him to maintain the grounds at the Freemasons Homes at Sandgate.

Before marrying, she was a member of the Presbyterian church at Josephine St – the start of a lifelong connection with the Redcliffe

Uniting Church which continued until her death.

Mrs Rounsefell’s voluntary work resulted in her being named Quota Woman of the Year and in 2001, receiving a Centenary Medal for her service in the community.

She will be sadly missed by her three children, eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren as well as the many friends who were recipients of her love and support during a lifetime spent helping others.

Her memorial service, which had to be delayed because of the recent COVID-19 lockdown, will be held at Redcliffe Uniting Church on what would have been her 90th birthday, April 29.

THE WINNERS of the 2021 Moreton Bay Region Art Prize have been revealed, coinciding with the official opening of the new Pine Rivers Art Gallery this month.

Now exclusively for local artists, Mayor Peter Flannery said the prize was a fantastic way to showcase the new-look gallery and celebrate the creativity of the region.

“Through the isolation of COVID it has been the arts that’s brought us together, brought us joy and even brought hope,” he said.

“This year’s winners have all explored very topical issues - our sense of identity, the fragility of the environment and the personal impacts of the global pandemic.”

Contemporary Aboriginal artist BJ Murphy’s ‘the original’ was awarded first prize of $5000, with $5000 shared between second, third and the people’s choice prize recipients.

Second prize was awarded to Sarah Field, for ‘Michele behind her mask’, while Jayda Bruce was awarded third prize for ‘Chaos’.

“BJ’s work ‘the original’ is striking for its use of light and contrast,” Mayor Flannery said.

“Pine Rivers Art Gallery has a particular reverence in the art world, as the original host of the inaugural Moreton Bay Region Art Award some 27 years ago.

“I have been blown away by the calibre of creativity here and encourage both locals and visitors from outside our area to come and check out the new space while it’s adorned with the best of the best from our region – you won’t be disappointed.”

The winning works are on display in the new Pine Rivers Art Gallery until April 24.

Plan secures future waste management

Call to report dog attacks to council MORETON Bay Regional Council is urging residents to report dog attacks to help identify dangerous dogs in the region.

It comes ahead of Council’s annual Regulated Dog Inspection Program, which ensures owners of regulated dogs manage their dogs in accordance with State Government legislation.

Mayor Peter Flannery said Council was there to help anytime, day or night.

“24 hours a day, seven days a week, we’re here to help people who have experienced or witnessed a dog attack,” Mayor Flannery said.

“To assist Council to manage dangerous dogs, residents need to report incidents with detailed information including the date, time, location and description of the attack.

“Dog attacks are a horrific experience and in a moment of panic it’s difficult for victims to remember specifics, so witness accounts can prove critical.

“Since our zero-tolerance policy towards dangerous dogs, we’re seeing more successful prosecutions and that’s largely thanks to the information people give to our investigating officers.”

There are more than 77,000 dogs in the Moreton Bay Region, with 380 classified as regulated dogs, which are animals declared as dangerous, menacing or restricted.

“Each year, Council conducts a Regulated Dog Inspection Program, to ensure the safety of our community and visitors when they walk the streets,” Mayor Flannery said.

“We know that most residents manage their dogs responsibly, however,

A NEW plan outlining how Moreton Bay Regional Council manages its waste assets will ensure the $216 million portfolio keeps pace with the region’s growth.

The Waste Services Asset Management Plan outlines how Council will maintain and replace its 28 facilities and the region’s 350,000 waste and recycling wheelie bins that service more than 1730,000 homes and businesses, as well as providing for future waste assets.

A recent report presented to Council said the waste services asset portfolio was a significant risk if it was not properly maintained.

The plan adopted by council retains the current operations, maintenance and recycling activity budget of $10.5 million a year, as well as the reactive maintenance budget of $34,000 a year and the programmed maintenance budget of $107,000 a year.

The capital budget for new, upgraded and renewed waste assets of $65.5 million over 10 years will also remain, but Council has decided to increase the capital budget by $1.5 million a year from financial year 2031 to allow for increased renewals so assets can be maintained.

“This will significantly reduce the risk of asset failures, health and safety risks and will minimise the likelihood of expensive lump sum replacement expenditure in the future,” the report said.

Jim Wyer at times irresponsible pet ownership has resulted in dogs attacking a person or another animal.

“Unfortunately, people and animals in the community suffer the terrible consequences through the careless and negligent behaviour of owners when dogs are not properly controlled.”

The Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 (The Act) imposes specific obligations on the owners of regulated dogs.

As part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Regulated Dog Inspection Program, officers will visit properties with regulated dogs from April 1 until June 30 to ensure they are meeting the requirements under The Act. Future of Showgrounds carpark unclear STORY JODIE POWELL THE future of a carpark built at the Redcliffe Showgrounds remains in limbo more than five months after Moreton Bay Regional Council asked the Show Society to abandon its push to have the area restored to grass.

Mayor Peter Flannery said he was frustrated by the stand-off and wanted to keep the 250-space car park – which cost $400,000 when it was constructed for Redcliffe Hospital staff to use for parking while the hospital’s multistory carpark was built.

It is believed it would cost $90,000-$100,000 to return the carpark to turf – money the Mayor said could be better spent on other infrastructure.

Garry Barlow said they wanted it to be returned to grass because that gave the society and the community better flexibility for the area’s use. “We want it returned to grass because we can use it for all events when it’s grass,” he said.

“(As a carpark) there’s a lot of things we can’t have like pop-up carnivals, circuses and the Convoy for Kids on the gravel because it’s not strong enough.”

Mayor Flannery said the 281-space carpark was an important asset which was well constructed and could better serve the community than turf.

Mr Barlow said the area could still be used as carparking if it was turfed, creating a more flexible community asset.

“It’s pretty well drained – we have no trouble with it when it has been raining.”

ARETHUSA College Deception Bay captain Kurt Jones has come a long way from the lost 11-yearold who started at the school.

Now in his final year, he spoke to fellow students to help them understand they could achieve anything they wanted.

“I’m 17, looking back on my life and reflecting on how far I have come.

My life has completely changed and this is why.

I was 11, and struggling through Year 6, just like all of my primary schooling.

I was under so much pressure and dropped out – halfway through Grade 6.

Then I heard about Arethusa – a school for students who need and desire to learn differently.

With much resistance and anxiety about returning to school, I accepted that I would enrol at Arethusa at the start of Grade 7 in 2016.

I was a very lost young child. Struggling with all

areas of life – not just academics and school, but bullying, even being the bully, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts and attempts, broken family, child abuse.

All this trauma led me to a life that was quickly going to put me into the juvenile detention system.

At 11, I started smoking and drinking, getting into drugs, crime. It continued until I started at Arethusa.

The first time I walked through the gates, I was scared and quiet.

I remember having a feeling of belonging – I had never been in an environment like this before.

The staff greeted me and pulled me straight into the family. I struggled with many things, but they knew my potential.

At Arethusa we’re not in the business of education, but transformation.

Building kids not just robots STORY KYLIE KNIGHT SCHOOLS across the Moreton Bay Region have the chance to win one of two robotics packages, valued at $2000.

Innovate Moreton Bay and program partner Grace Lutheran College, with funding support from Bechtel Engineering, are offering schools the chance to win a package, which includes a robotics kit and training.

The schools’ students and staff will develop skills needed to build the robots, so they can compete in the FIRST Australia Robotics Queensland Championships at Grace Lutheran College in November.

More than 40 teams from across Queensland will compete for a place in the national championships.

Innovate Moreton Bay Regional Innovation Co-ordinator Steve Butler said the collaboration between the organisation and Grace Lutheran College aimed to open robotics up to more schools in the region.

“We know from the work we’ve done with schools over the past four years how valuable robotics pro-

grams are in developing a love of STEM-based education, not only in engineering and coding but also teaching students about co-operation, teamwork and resilience,” Mr Butler said.

“These programs can be expensive and not all schools have the means or expertise to run them.

We’re hoping to change that for two schools in our region.

“This is a chance for schools, students and parents to nominate their school and join in the fun.”

Grace Lutheran College Head of Community and Innovation Peter Kellett has been involved in robotics since 2008.

Mr Kellett said the FIRST Tech Challenge was an international organisation which worked with about two million students each year, fostering ‘co-operatition’ – co-operation with competition.

THE latest production from the M o u s e t r ap T h e a t r e Company brings all the suspense of an interactive murder mystery to the stage.

Written and directed

by Mousetrap member John De La Cruz – who also composed the music – Death at Bracken Manor

is an Agatha Christie-style play set in the 1950s.

“There’s the lord of the manor, the village priest and everyone’s a suspect,” De La Cruz said.

No stranger to crafting plays, De La Cruze said Death at Bracken Manor was inspired by Agatha Christie’s iconic novels.

“I’m a huge Agatha Christie buff and I’ve been going through them – I’ve finished the Marples and almost finished the Poirots,” De La Cruz said.

Mousetrap’s last play – The

Great British Bump-Off – was also an interactive murdermystery, with the audience invited to play detective and interrogate the characters to find the culprit at the end of the performance.

“We had a gap in this slot and they said ‘we should do another one’.”

That left De La Cruz with just two weeks to source a script.

When he couldn’t find precisely what he wanted, he decided to create one himself.

“There were plenty with

multiple endings, but none with different clues for each ending,” De La Cruz said.

“Then I thought it would be nice to have music for the show.”

The result is a song performed by the MC to open the show, music during scene changes and in key scenes.

De La Cruz said writing the play and the music at the same time helped his creative process.

“When I got stuck on one, I moved to the other,” he explained.

De La Cruz said it was fun to see

his work come to life.

“I’ve never directed anything I’ve written before – to see a set based on my fevered writing is pretty cool,” De La Cruz said.

“It’s a lot of fun seeing other people take your words and put their own spin on it.”

NOW is the perfect time to plant fruit trees, with the worst of the heat behind us, but it is not as simple as just sticking one in the ground.

Redcliffe Garden Centre horticulturalist Tylor Elmsley said there were some key rules to follow, which differed depending on the type of fruit tree.

CITRUS TREES “They love lots of food – in the form of fertiliser, organic matter, compost and manure because they are producing lots of fruit and putting energy into that fruit,” Mr Elmsley said.

“The plant draws the nutrients from the leaves and puts it into the fruit.”

“The more specialised, the better.

It takes the guess work out of it,” he said.

Planting: Dig a decent hole about twice the diameter of the pot. Cover with mulch to stop the soil drying out. Plant in an open position, with full sun.

Fertiliser: In about 4-6 months, when the tree has fruited, add slowrelease fertiliser to pots. For plants in the ground, you can add manure and rich fertiliser. These cannot be applied to plants in pots because the soil becomes too concentrated

and will burn the roots. If the leaves become discoloured, it is an indication the plant needs fertilising.

Pests: Because of our humidity, citrus trees are susceptible to citrus leaf minor, mealy bug and scale on stems. The best treatment is white oil. Fungal and bacterial problems can also arise and are best treated with fungicides such as wettable sulphur and mancozeb. If you have ants, they are usually attracted to other pests. If you get rid of the other pests, the ants will most likely disappear too.

If the plant is in a pot, you can flood the pot to get rid of the ants. If it is in the ground, you really need to eliminate the primary pest.

The best way to ensure a healthy crop is to sacrifice some of the fruit.

“When people see fruit on their plants, they get really excited but it’s a good idea to pluck most of the fruit off,” Mr Elmsley said.

The varieties at Redcliffe Garden Centre have been grown for Queensland conditions, so they do not need ‘low chill to set the fruit’.

Mr Elmsley said now was a good time to plant them, but added they were deciduous, so would drop their leaves in the cooler months.

Planting: The type of soil needed is similar to citrus trees – good quality and high in organic matter, trace elements and minerals.

Fertiliser: Follow the same regimen as is recommended for citrus trees.

Pests: Trees can have scale and mealy bugs and fungal problems.

The best treatment is to move them into the sun and water them less.

You can also use a fungal spray.

Grasshoppers can also be a problem.

Fruiting: The trees will fruit in early October.

BLUEBERRIES Planting: Prepare acidic soil, with lower PH, such as soil you would use for azalea, gardenia and camelia plants. You should also use fertilisers specific to these plants.

They can take full sun, but like a little shade to protect them from the afternoon sun.

Mr Elmsley said there were many varieties to choose from.

“It you’re into blueberries, you could have different varieties that fruit at different times of the year, so you’re always picking blueberries,” he said.

The plant grows as a shrub, which needs to be pruned (about one third removed) each year after it has fruited.

They will also attract pollinators to the garden. Other flowers to consider are salvias, buddleja, pansies and viola. They will help bring the bees in.

Ingredients • 3 small ripe bananas • ¼ cup dried apricots, softened in water and drained • 3/4 cup crunchy or smooth peanut butter • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 4 tbls maple syrup

• 1 ½ cup rolled oats • ½ cup almond meal • ½ cup flaxseed meal • 2 tbls chia seeds • ½ tsp ground cinnamon • ½ tsp salt

Preheat oven to 180 degrees (170 degrees fan-forced). Grease and line a 20cm square baking tray.

Puree the bananas and apricots in a food processor until smooth. Add ¼ cup peanut butter, maple syrup and vanilla extract and pulse in the processer to combine.

In a large bowl, mix together the rolled oats, almond meal, flaxseed meal, chia seeds and ground cinnamon.

Pour the peanut butter mixture into the dry ingredients and mix well. The mixture should be moist, but not runny.

Spread the breakfast bar mix into the prepared tray and smooth the surface. Bake for 20 minutes or until the middle is firm to touch and the edges lightly browned. Remove from the oven.

Spread the remaining peanut butter on top of the bars and bake for another 10 minutes or until the peanut butter has little bubbles in it.

Cool completely on a wire rack and sprinkle with extra chia seeds.

Cut into bars.

The bars can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge.

Remove stones from plums and cut the fruit into quarters. Then freeze in a plastic bag for at least two hours.

PRODUCTIVE locations nearly always have a couple of key factors, which are some type of feature or structure that provides shelter or a source of food.

A flat, featureless seabed will rarely hold fish for any length of time. They need food and shelter. Structure, either man made or natural, will attract life. From the microscopic right through the food chain to larger predators. Weed beds and reefs offer protection and food for small fish which in turn attract larger fish and so on.

Features can be a sand gutters, channel edges, mangroves, fallen trees, drop offs, or even something as subtle as a wind lane on the surface which concentrates or funnels food into or past a particular area. Rock walls, jetty pylons, pontoons and boat moorings can be productive.

Shaded areas can hold fish, particularly on hot days or in very clear conditions. Water temperatures and clarity also play a part in marine life and their feeding habits and movements.

Many years ago, I was shown that putting a bait or lure into a potential spot with the attitude of, “I wonder if there’s anything in there”, will quite often yield results.

However, the ‘potential’ spot will have stood out to me for one reason or another because I’m actively looking for it and thinking about possible influencing factors.

Simply picking a spot at random and putting a bait or lure in the water is never going

to give us the best chance of success. If we consciously look for these features and think about how they may influence our target species’ presence and activity, we put ourselves in a much better position to either put fresh fish on the menu that trip, or catch that trophy fish of a lifetime.

Make that conscious effort to look for and target structure, features and activity. It will change the way you think and fish, and definitely improve your chances of success.

FISHING REPORT • Plenty of baitfish around the peninsula.

• Tailor becoming more consistent right around the peninsula, as are squid and yellowtail pike.

• Bream, squire, snapper and grassy sweetlip on the rocky points and inshore reefs.

• Still a few school mackerel and trevally in Bramble Bay, off Woody Point Jetty, and around the corner to Scotts Point, (remember to stay out of the Green Zone).

• Bream and flathead in Hays Inlet, the Pine River, Scarborough Spit and foreshore, and the mouth of the canals.

• Mud crabs are active and on the move after the Easter rain.

• Some prawns around creek and river mouths but have been moving quickly.

• Longtail tuna have arrived in very good numbers in Moreton Bay with the occasional school venturing in close for our land-based anglers, as one local fisho recently discovered on Woody Pt Jetty, after being spooled in approx 2-3 seconds on his bream gear, (g’day Jay).

• Snapper and tuskies on the artificial reefs inside Moreton.

• Spanish mackerel outside Moreton.

CIGUATERA or “tropical fish poisoning’’ is a food-borne disease that rears its ugly head from time to time in Queensland, and a recent case has been doing the rounds on social media.

Up to 50,000 people worldwide contract the disease each year, and while fatalities are rare, they do occur. It is caused by people eating fish containing ciguatoxin – a potent nerve toxin. There is no way to detect whether a fish contains the toxin prior to eating it and the toxin is not broken down by freezing or cooking. Ciguatera is probably under diagnosed.

More than 400 different fish species have been associated with ciguatera fish toxicity, but it is mostly tropical and subtropical reef-dwelling species affected.

Some species that are considered ciguatoxic in one region, are perfectly safe in others. For example, red bass are known to be a ciguatera risk in Queensland but are safe to eat in Western Australia. The highest profile ciguatoxic fish in Queensland is the Spanish mackerel, although the risk of contracting the disease from eating Spanish mackerel is still low. The risk though is elevated in Platypus Bay in Hervey Bay which is a well-known ciguatera ‘hot spot’.

Ciguatoxin is passed through the aquatic food chain. It is initially made by specific species of benthic microalgae which are grazed upon by herbivorous animals. The ciguatoxin is stored in the body of the herbivorous animals.

When predatory fish consume the herbivorous animals, they too retain the toxin. If a predatory fish eats several fish with ciguatoxin they retain the toxin from all the fish consumed – thus having a higher concentration of the toxin than the original prey. This process is called biological magnification.

It has long been thought that the larger individuals of a species are a higher risk, but new research on Spanish mackerel has suggested this is not the

The symptoms comprise a combination of a few to more than 30 gastrointestinal, neurological and/or generalised health impacts.

Symptoms are highly variable between individuals.

The first symptoms can be either gastrointestinal or neurological in nature and can occur soon after eating, or be delayed in their onset.

Gastrointestinal symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea and abdominal pain. Neurological symptoms can include tingling of the lips, hands and feet, unusual temperature perception disturbances where cold objects give a dryice sensation or where there is a complete reversal of temperature sensation, and a severe localised itch of the skin. Muscle, joint, and tooth aches occur to varying extents; and mood disorders including depression and anxiety may occur less frequently.

Treatment is focused on addressing the symptoms as they appear with no specific way of addressing the disease once it has occurred. There is no magic ciguatera antidote.

Some symptoms may only last a few days to a week for many, but for others it can last months or years. Ciguatera can leave a prolonged allergy-like responses to certain foods and drinks unrelated to the cause of the initial poisoning.

Symptoms can be retriggered by consumption of fish without ciguatoxin, foods such as peanuts, pork or chicken, or alcohol.

Short Memories Predicting the future is impossible. The benefit of hindsight is the only real tool that we have to know how predictions have played out. When it comes to investments, by the time you have hindsight the horse has usually already bolted. This week I thought it would be a good idea to look at a little hindsight and review predictions versus actual happenings over the past 12 months.

ANZAC Day 2020 is great way to remember what was going on 12 months ago.

Remember the full lockdown? All services were cancelled and remembrance was held at dawn in people’s driveway. All but the most essential businesses were shuttered closed. Unemployment queues were around the corner and down the block with millions of people suddenly out of work. The government put in place extreme fiscal and monetary policy measures to soften the impending economic bloodbath. Banks gave hundreds of thousands of borrowers, mortgage holidays.

During this time commentators and economic forecasters predicted that the real estate market was going to go into free-fall. Most estimated price falls of 30% plus (and some were even talking Armageddon). Obviously, this didn’t happen.

Move forward a little to July 2020 and the same commentators were still predicting big falls. “Just wait till September when Jobkeeper ends” was what they were saying. Again, the wipe-out didn’t happen. Around November/December the same

forecasters were starting to talk growth. Four months further down the track these same forecasters of doom are now just about all talking between 10 & 20% growth in values for the next 12 months.

Should we believe them? Well, they may well be right and we will only know with hindsight, however if we look at the history of experts predicting the market not many of them get it right very often. Current market conditions are what I always prefer to talk about. If you are looking to sell, conditions are the most favourable they have been for as long as I can remember. Should you take advantage now or wait? How long will this last? Who knows? While I’m one of the first people to be excited about a booming market, I also know that that you can never take what the forecasters predict as gospel.

THE Dolphins’ Intrust Super Cup side will be looking for a win against Tweed Seagulls at Moreton Daily Stadium this weekend, after going down to Wynnum Manly in a tight tussle on Sunday.

Head Coach Adam Mogg said while it may appear the side has started slowing in their past two outings, it was not the case in his view.

“Two points would have been nice, but it was a massive jump forward for us. If we keep going in that direction, we’ll be OK,” Mogg said.

“We didn’t run out of time on Sunday, we ran out of a bit of execution.”

“We started poorly (against Capras) as opposed to Wynnum, who I don’t think we started poorly against. We had to build our way back into the game and I’m really happy with the performance last weekend,” he explained “It was the best standard of QCup games this year.

The Dolphins went down to Wynnum Manly 34-28 on Sunday, after recovering from a 16-0 deficit before putting on 12 points before the half-time break.

The previous weekend, in their first home game for the season at Moreton Daily Stadium, The Dolphins came back from being 16-4 down at half-time to win 24-22, after a penalty goal to Hayze Perham in the 79th minute.

Mogg said the stadium and the atmosphere made the home side and their opposition lift.

“It’s always good to play at Moreton Daily Stadium.

It’s a terrific stadium and

a great venue. It’s always a pleasure to play there and it’s the same for opposition teams. They get excited about the occasion as well,” he said.

He said Trai Fuller’s try-saving tackle against the Capras would be up there for tackle of the season, but one by Reece Walsh against Wynnum was also a contender.

Mogg said the 18-year-old, who has signed with the Warriors, came from nowhere to make the tackle.

“We scored 28 points at the weekend, so we’re scoring points and have so much potential in our footy team,” he said.

“We just need to keep improving. We’ve used 31

players to-date, which is quite a lot. There are individuals that just need to improve and that will be our focus. I see lots of improvement in some of our players, but execution by some individuals was poor.”

The coaching team will work with them on individual skills work, reviewing video and applying personal accountability. “People know what to do and where to be … it’s just making sure we’re executing well when fatigued,” he said.

The Dolphins take on the Tweed Seagulls in round five at Moreton Daily Stadium on April 25 at 6pm. The Dolphins have won two of their first four games.

XXXX rivalry round saw us take on arch rivals Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the battle of the bay!

There was a lot spoken about in the lead-up to this game to ensure everyone knew about the rivalry between the two clubs.

To add to the emotion of it all it was the oneyear anniversary of the passing of the Wynnum skipper and allround great bloke Mitch Cronin.

The game was at Kougari Oval, Wynnum’s home ground, and it was the first time they had played there in more than 18 months.

The stage was set for a cracker of game and it certainly delivered.

We got off to a very slow start with some lapses in defence and found ourselves down 16-0 after 20 minutes. We showed a lot of resilience to fight back before the break.

An intercept after halftime allowed Wynnum to slip away again however shortly after Josh Beehag got us back with an intercept of his own and a huge solo effort to score.

At 28-28, with two minutes to go, Wynnum split the line and scored to seal the game. Reece Walsh made his Dolphins debut and showed he’s destined for the NRL. Trai Fuller was at his scintillating best and Dolphins veteran Jeremy Hawkins carried the ball strongly every touch.

We look forward to another improved performance at home on Saturday. It’s the long weekend, so make sure you come along and cheer us on.

Peninsula power to double STORY NICK CROCKFORD A COMMANDING display in difficult conditions gave Peninsula the Warehouse Cricket Association B2N double for 2019-20.

Already minor premiers, Peninsula lost the grand final toss and was put in by Toowong on a rain-affected pitch at Marchant Park on Saturday.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD INDIAH-PAIGE Riley, whose football career started in North Lakes with The Lakes FC, has become the 207th player to be capped at senior international level by the Matildas.

The 19-year-old forward came on as a second-half substitute for Caitlin Foord in a friendly against Germany in Weisbaden.

“Caitlin said ‘congrats’ as

she came off … that’s when it sank in,” said Riley, who spent two years at Moreton Bay United before going to Brisbane Roar.

The following day the former Murrumba Downs State College student told Football Australia: “It’s actually so crazy. I still cannot quite believe it.

“The support and messages I have received have been overwhelming. It’s an amazing feeling.

“I’m so grateful to be here

and given the opportunity.

It’s an honour to be a Westfield Matilda. I hope I can honour everything that comes with it.”

Riley was told by Matildas’ Assistant Coach Mel Andreatta, who she had played under at Brisbane Roar, that her moment had arrived.

“Mel told me ‘look at set pieces, you’re going on’,” recalls Riley, “I thought, okay - and then she said ‘you’re on’.

“Seeing my number up on that (stadium) board …. it’s surreal. It takes you back to all the sacrifices you have made - and my parents made for me. It means a lot.

“I couldn’t wait to get out there. I had to run to the other side of the pitch, so I had a few moments to get ready for what Germany was going to bring.

“Once over there I was like … okay, now it’s time, now it’s time. You’ve

worked hard for this. Just relax, be confident and do everything right!”

The Matildas went down 5-2 in the international friendly and Riley was an unused substitute when they lost 5-0 to The Netherlands in Nijmegen last Wednesday.

Riley has just completed the first season of a three-year contract with Danish club Fortuna Hjorring in the Elitedivisionen.

THERE were mixed fortunes for yachts from the Moreton Bay Region in this year’s Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race (B2G).

Of the five starters on Good Friday off Shorncliffe only two finished the 73rd running of the race.

Michael Andrews, owner and skipper of Jenesis, from Moreton Bay Boat Club (MBBC), said his yacht hit a record speed on the trip north.

Daniel Baker, from Redcliffe Leagues Swimming Club, was in action at the Australian Swimming Championships multi-class events, finishing 12th in the 200m freestyle, 15th in the 100 freestyle and 19th in the 50m freestyle.

Deception Bay Dragons just missed progressing to the next stage of the Canale Cup. Dragons lost 6-1 to Logan Village Falcons and finished third in Group A with three points after beating Jimboomba 4-3 in round one.

After three hurdles of the final he trailed but soon led and won in 12.9 seconds – a pb by 0.48 seconds.

“It was a race I thought I had a chance in and crossing the line I thought I had won,” said the Redcliffe State High School student.

Harlow also collected a

national silver medal as runner-up in the Under 14 400m final in 54.73 seconds – a time he was happy with, but not the race.

“I got sucked into his (the winner’s) race and slowed down the back straight,” said Harlow, who fought hard to hold on to silver by just 0.05 of a second. “(At the finish) I actually had no idea I was second,” he admitted.

In a hectic three days,

Harlow was fourth in the Under 14 long jump with a leap of 5.60cm, one centimetre beyond his previous best.

An hour after that event, he had to run the 800m, finishing 13th in 2 minutes 14.68 seconds.

“It was a really good meet and great to watch all the other athletes” said Harlow, who thanked his coaches Shane Pearson and Theresa Stolberg.

The national medals will be added to his 11 state titles (two relays) and three state records this season.

Harlow is also in Redcliffe State High School’s Rugby League Program of Excellence and has accepted an invitation to join Brisbane North Broncos Development Squad.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD THE future is already brighter at Redcliffe Leagues Hockey Club ,which has major plans to improve and expand its facilities in coming years.

A $160,000 upgrade of floodlights was completed last week at the Oxley Ave grounds following a lightning strike in February.

The new 400 lumen LED lights – which replaced 250 lumen lights - have one third of the running costs, three times the lifespan and will save club about $12,000 a year.

Club president Cameron Howes said the costs were met by the club’s sinking fund and insurance from the lightning strike. The new lights meet standards for night matches.

There are also plans to improve the waiting area for teams at the Mary Nairn Fields using a donation from a life member.

Lang Agar, a former player and supporter of the club, left $10,000 to Redcliffe Leagues Hockey Club when he passed away in 2019.

“Lang was a wonderful, very loyal supporter who was associated with the club for 60 years,” said Mr Howes, “it was a most generous donation.”

Liam’s fight for world top 15 STORY NICK CROCKFORD GRIFFIN boxer Liam Wilson is one win away from a top 15 ranking with two of the world’s four major boxing organisations.

The 25-year-old from All Star Boxing Academy in PCYC Pine Rivers faces Francis Chua at the WIN Entertainment Centre, Wollongong on April 21.

Victory will earn a place in the top 15 super featherweights of the IBF (Interna-

tional Boxing Federation) and WBO (World Boxing Organisation) rankings.

Career records suggest it may be a close fight. Wilson has won all eight of his professional contests, three by knockout. Chua has won eight, two by knockout, lost one and drawn one.

“This will be a tough fight,” said Wilson’s trainer Ben Harrington at All Star Boxing in Bray Park, “this is a tough kid he’s fighting.

“There are a few adjustments we’ll make, but we always train hard and do the right thing to prepare for every fight.”

Chua, from Perth, predicted on Fox Sports that he was going to “bring the best out of Liam Wilson” and “see I can take it”. Wilson’s reply was: “He’ll feel it.”

Wilson had 11 years as an amateur. His record stood at 124 wins from 138 fights – many while at Caboolture Boxing Club. He also repre-

sented Australia, reaching the quarter-finals of the 64kg category at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Wilson then turned professional after the Games and his stunning knockout of Jesus Cuadro 14 months ago hit the national headlines.

The Year 10s are preparing for a one-off final on May 12 – opponents to be decided – to reach the (Kevin) Walters Cup. “Definitely feeling confident,” said Murray, who joined the program in 2015, “the Year 9s have been improving all the time and had great results going into this competition.

“The Year 10s have certainly got a chance. They have been good in trial matches and I think we have our strongest Opens team for quite a few years.

“Getting all our teams into the Broncos competitions would be a great boost for the program.

“We have been working hard and building. If we don’t achieve it this year, I think the program will do it soon.”

The current Year 12 players have been right through the program with Scott, being the Year 7s when he started in 2015.

The Program of Excellence is in its 21st year and has produced NRL stars Queensland and Australia half-back Daly Cherry-Evans, Queensland and Broncos forward Josh Maguire and Josh Kerr, a forward at St George Dragons.

Redcliffe PGC Touring Professional Doug Klein finished 15th in the NSW Open at Concord Golf Club in Sydney last month. Klein had rounds of 70 67 69 67 for a total of 273, 11 under par – seven shots behind winner Bryden Macpherson on 18 under.

Tom lands state golds at the double IT has been a long and “difficult road”, but Redcliffe teenager Tom Voigt has become a state champion – twice in two months.

The 13-year-old from Southern Cross Catholic College won gold at the Queensland Schools Swimming Championships in March.

He also had silver and bronze medals in the SB14 multi-class events at his

first state titles, all in personal best times, in Brisbane.

Tom then won gold, silver and bronze at the Special Olympics Queensland Games swimming competition held in Burpengary at the weekend.

one and bronze in 100m breaststroke division one.

“I felt proud,” said Tom, who also trains with Australian Crawl at the Emily Seebohm Aquatic Centre in Fitzgibbon, “I put a lot of work into this.”

At the schools titles he took gold in the Boys 13-15 50m breaststroke winning in 43.3 seconds, six seconds ahead of the runner up.

There was silver in the

100m breaststroke in one minute 45.48 seconds and bronze in the 50m freestyle in 33.66 seconds.

“I rang his coach and cried when they were giving him his medal,” said mum Katie. “he smiled for the first time he was five.

“He has tried and tried for so long to get under 35 seconds (50m freestyle). He finally got there and didn’t realise it.

“We are very proud. It has been a difficult road for Tom, swimming with autism. The opportunity he was given to swim at school has had such an impact on his self-esteem.

“This was our first time at these championships. It was more about being with other families who have the same ability with their children and sharing the Tom Voigt with his state schools medals. moment with them.”

School bid to clean sweep in qualifiers STORY NICK CROCKFORD

TWO down, three to go – that’s the challenge facing Redcliffe State High School’s Rugby League Program of Excellence in the next three weeks.

Program director Scott Murray is aiming to get all five teams into the top schools’ rugby league competitions in South East Queensland.

It is a feat which Redcliffe is not believed to have achieved in the 20 years these competitions have been run.

Redcliffe’s Year 7 and Year 8 teams are already through having qualified for the Brisbane Broncos Old Boys Trophy and (Steve) Renouf Shield respectively.

The Year 7s lost 14-4 to Marsden, but roared back beating Stretton, Coombabah, Mabel Park and Alexandra Hills without conceding a point!

The Year 9s were hoping to join them yesterday (April 20) when they faced three pool matches and then (hopefully) a final at Stafford.

Preparation for the (Michael) Hancock Cup qualifiers included going into school on the last day of their Easter holidays for training.

Daniel’s golden run REDCLIFFE athlete Daniel Harlow felt “on top of the world” after winning his first national title at his first Australian Championships.

The 12-year-old took almost half a second off his personal best (pb) time in winning the Under 14 90m hurdles final, by 0.07 of a second over Blake Deery from the ACT, at Olympic Park last Wednesday.

He then stepped up onto the same gold-medal podium used at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, literally following in the footsteps of Cathy Freeman two decades ago.

“It felt surreal, on top of the world” said Harlow, a member of Redcliffe Little Athletics since he was nine.

“I tried to take it all in … the noise from the crowd was great.”
