Leeding the way in life saving SURF Life Saving is a family affair for the Leeds, with mum Karla and dad Quinton following daughters Gigi and Izzy into the sport.

Members of the Redcliffe Surf Life Saving Club for the past six years, Izzy and Gigi were both honoured with top gongs in their respective age groups this season.

Gigi won the Harry Graham Nipper of the Year Award, while Izzy was named the inaugural female cadet champion, with

Ben Szulc named male cadet champion.

Gigi said she was happy to be recognised for her work with the club, spending most Sunday mornings helping set up the beach for Nippers training.

“I love the beach – it’s just fun hanging out with my friends,” she said. “(Nippers) is really good for developing social skills and fitness.”

Izzy was delighted to be named the inaugural female

cadet champion and when she’s not on patrol, she’s helping out with the Stingrays, a Nippers program for children with special needs.

“It’s great for them to be able to come down to the beach and muck around in the water,” she said.

Ms Leed, who was a Nipper in Tasmania as a child and is the club’s Deputy Uniform Officer, said since the family moved to Queensland for the weather, it was a natural extension to

join the Redcliffe club.

“It’s good for the family unit to be doing something together,” she said.

Mr Leed is a member of the Redcliffe Water Safety Team and patrol member,.

“When Nippers sign up, parents have to join the club too, you’re not forced to do anything, but the club relies on people volunteering their time,” he said.

Community rallies for youth A PROJECT that came out of a Queensland Police summit on your crime prevention last year has been so successful at re-engaging young people it is likely to expand.

Speaking after the second summit, held last month, Moreton District Crime Prevention Unit officer in charge Sergeant Sarah Grayson said she hoped initiatives identified at this year’s event would be equally successful.

young people connect with the community.

“Kids who have been to court are directed to attend – it’s for any kids, not just Samoan kids,” she said.

“It’s been hugely successful and we’re exploring funding to get a second outrigger canoe.”

More than 130 people attended this year’s summit, brainstorming projects and initiatives that would engage young people and help prevent youth crime.

The ideas were distilled into five key areas to work on during the coming year.

“Education for domestic violence, funding for projects for initial and long-term sustainability, a one-stop services hub, the development of a 24hour safe youth space and connecting and consulting with youth for outcomes and projects were the five chosen,” Sen-Sgt Grayson said.

“We’re also looking at a mini youth forum to consult young people, so they have input into the next summit.”

Manager Amy-lee Mayes said crime and violence occurred in society, but it was not restricted to young people and was reflected in the broader population.

Ms Mayes said the focus on young people was disproportionate and for the majority of perpetrators significant trauma had led them down this path.

“We know there has to be consequences, but we’re not going to change anything unless we address the underlying causes,” she said.

crime rate had actually dropped in the past 10 years, but rates of domestic violence had skyrocketed.

Chameleon Youth Housing Manager Carmel Reithmuller said the organisation had also identified youth domestic violence as an issue, recording a dramatic increase in the past two years.

“We have had a 400 percent increase in domestic violence against youth in the past two years,” she said. “I think it’s generational and COVID’s probably contributed, with peo-

Deception Bay Community Youth Programs director Janine Botfield said building resilience among young people was the key to helping them take control of their destiny and realise they had a valuable contribution to make.

“Our YAMBI (Youth Access Moreton Bay Initiative) program allowed us to work with parents and families to help them engage their kids and help them understand the benefits of keeping up with school,” she said.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT JORDAN McLachlan knows what it is like to feel a lost and unsure about the future, but he is using that experience to help other youth find their way.

The 23-year-old from Rothwell has “gone full circle” after taking part in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work program a few years ago at Redcliffe Area Youth Space, then completing a 12-month traineeship there before being offered a fulltime job this year.

“I was quite lost in a sense in terms of what to do,” Mr McLachlan recalled.

“It definitely helped me find a pathway that suited me. I’ve found a passion for helping people and assisting people find their direction, especially since I know it can be difficult.”

Mr McLachlan said he had learnt much from the co-ordinator who helped him through the program and knows how important it is to help young people discover their strengths and interests.

He said he was considering a career in sales or real estate because he was “a good talker”, when he real-

ised he would really enjoy helping young people.

“Through my performance and professional growth, I was offered the chance to work in the program that I started with,” Mr McLachlan said.

It also gave him a grounding in social enterprises via the Skate and Scooter Shop, and even barrista training.

At the time, the Picnic Hill event was part of the program and he was involved in organising and running the monthly event. He also served at the bar, which boosted his confidence and interpersonal skills.

“Being in an extremely

social environment really opened me up and I found a passion for talking to folks,” he said.

So, what is his message to other young people ahead of Youth Week?

“Just get out there and try a few things. You don’t

“I never saw myself working in a youth services role but I love it here. It is a lot of trial and error and it is a hard road but once you find something you’re set.”

Kirsten shines as confidence grows

ISSUE 13 // APRIL 13 2021 STORY NICK CROCKFORD IF you want to know what a difference a year makes, ask Kristen Roelofsz.

Last year, the 17-yearold was suffering from crippling anxiety. Kristen said she stopped going to school, stayed in her room 24/7 and was not happy.

Yet today, she is a school captain at the YMCA Vocational School Moreton Bay, in Mango Hill, part of the school’s leadership group and volunteers at RSPCA Dakabin.

I just needed a little push

“I have surprised myself,” Kristen said, “I never in a million years thought I would apply for the school captain role.

“We had to say why we would be a really good leader. I was really honest with that.

“I’m not a confident person, not as loud as other people, I was scared to go up and talk on stage … and I guess they liked that. It was really personal.

“I definitely think I am a better person now. I have grown out of my shell. I still have a bit of anxiety, but not as bad as before.”

Kristen said enrolling at the vocational school at Halpine Drive, Mango Hill, was a key factor.

“At the start it (going to the school) was actually really hard, but later on I got really comfortable,” she said.

“The classes are really small. We don’t have 30 students, the most is 18 in my class which really helped, because I didn’t like going to the shopping centre - I couldn’t even go without crying.

“The staff here have been really supportive, the way they encourage you and help with everything.”

Through a school program, Kristen volunteered at RSPCA Dakabin one day a week, but now also goes two or three days a week in her own time.

“Once I had done the school program, I decided to keep it going,” she said.

“I really enjoy it.” “(Generally) I think I just needed a little push. Now, I just want to become more confident.”

Call for kids to come to rescue STORY KYLIE KNIGHT CLONTARF-based charity SchoolAid has launched its ‘Bail Out A Buddy’ flood appeal in response to the flooding disaster affecting many communities on the east coast of Australia.

The campaign is calling on schools to pass around a ‘bailing bucket’ to raise money for communities affected by the disaster SchoolAid Founder and CEO Sean Gordon said donating a few dollars could have a powerful impact when multiplied.

“If every school could raise just $100, the total would exceed $1 million,” Mr Gordon said.

Australian Primary Principals Association President Malcolm Elliott said the disaster had affected families, businesses, farms and schools.

“I encourage all schools across Australia to pass around a collection bucket to help out,” he said.

Australian Secondary School Principals Association President Andrew Pierpoint said the organisation was proud to support SchoolAid. “ASPA members had sup-

To ensure maximum impact, the funds raised will focus on the ‘recovery and rebuild’ phase of the disaster, once needs are assessed and there is clarity around what is covered by insur-

ance. SchoolAid’s purpose is to empower young philanthropists by providing inschool support and a crowdfunding platform to enable young people to raise money for charitable causes.

They do this to improve student wellbeing because, through giving to others, the students are empow-

ered to make a difference and in turn feel happier about the world and their place in it.

Since SchoolAid was founded in 1999, more than 6500 schools have taken part in more than 75 campaigns, raising in excess of $6 million for charitable causes.

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE

AUTHOR Micheal Meade observed: “In many tribal cultures, it is said that if the boys were not initiated into manhood … they will burn down the structures of culture, just to feel the warmth”.

Youth crime is not something that starts when young people turn 15, 16 or 17. It is actually birthed when children are two, three and four years of age. The Dunedin Study, which followed 1000 New Zealanders born the same year I was, has discovered many profound things about human psychology.

One of the most sobering is that poorly socialised three-year-olds become risk-taking youth, and criminal adults.

Youth crime is an outcome of family and social breakdown. It is the pain we reap from not doing life well as nuclear families and local communities. Astonishingly we’ve forgotten that the most fragile commodities we possess, the resources we need to nurture the most, are not our bank accounts or curriculum vitae – but our children, our marriages and our communities.

We need to address youth violence. We need to get the balance right between carrot and stick.

There is a logic to those who argue that grace (carrot) is necessary.

Since much youth crime is a product of trauma and neglect (failure to initiate the young into our

tribe), showing nurture and love can and does have a transformative effect. When young people feel valued by society, they can become productive members of our community, indeed most do.

The trouble is that if you take away consequences (stick) for crime, grace becomes powerless. Grace (giving people a second chance) is only transformative when we know we are escaping from real consequences.

So, we have this perennial swing between getting tough on crime and showing grace – neither of which works on its own.

We must have real and tangible consequences for crime. Consequences that match the crimes. Then judges, police and the system must have the ability to extend grace when they detect real remorse and repentance in the young – real contrition.

That is the incredibly difficult task of addressing the present issue of youth crime. But to really change things, we need to transform our communities and focus on our children, families, marriages, relationship, communities. It’s why I’m in the business I’m in; building healthy, transformative, nurturing communities. Thank you for being part of the solution.

Service, study with a smile STORY KYLIE KNIGHT COMMUNITY service is a big part of Ella Babarovich’s life already earning her the 2021 Margate Community Bank Youth Educations Scholarship as she begins university life.

The 18-year-old former Southern Cross Catholic College student has received $2500 to help cover study costs.

“It’s a major help. Some of that money will go towards textbooks and resources and the majority will be used to start paying my fees,” Ella said.

She has a natural desire to help people and hopes her chosen career path will enable her to do that either with young people as a teacher, or sportspeople as a sports scientist.

The Margate resident is already tutoring Year 11 students in biology, physical education and religion.

“It’s just something I enjoy and I know ultimately it’s going to help the community as a whole.”

Ella has also been a regular volunteer at the Breakfast Club of Redcliffe for the past three years, serving meals to the needy twice on Christmas Day. It started at school in Year 11 as part of the LaSalle Youth Leaders program and continued post-graduation, when she and friend Charlotte decided to become “proper volunteers”.

“We volunteer once a week. It’s not much time out of your schedule to put back in for the reward you get by feeling like you’re achieving something,” Ella said. “I like that I’m doing something that’s putting

something back into the community. I enjoy going and making a difference.”

Ella said had also learnt much from the adult volunteers at breakfast club.

“You can see how much they enjoy having the school students there and the young people,” she said.

Margate Community Bank Scholarship and Student Development Committee Chairman Daniel Petravicius said Ella’s academic achievement, service to the community and personal qualities, which made her a good ambassador, earned her the scholarship.

He said while her ATAR score was impressive, it was her service in her school and community that truly made her stand out.

“We look for students who have that potential and drive to make a difference in the community,” Mr

Petravicius said. “She really exhibits the community service that we hope to see in young people wanting to serve and assist.”

Mr Petravicius, who won the same scholarship in 2014, said he knew firsthand what a difference it made when transitioning to university life.

He is looking forward to seeing what Ella achieves in studying her double-degree in Exercise Science and Secondary Education and beyond.

“When we interviewed her, her passion for science shone through. She really has a burning passion for not just getting into education so she can teach other students about science and physical education, but also potentially working with athletes to better understand their bodies and what they can achieve,” he said.

Bonding over basketball a winner STORY JODIE POWELL A NEW basketball program aimed at strengthening bonds between police and young people has proven a big hit.

Moreton District Crime Prevention Unit Officer in Charge Sergeant Sarah Grayson said the free fiveweek program at Scarborough attracted about 20 young people.

“It’s been a great start for a new program,” Sgt Grayson said.

“The kids think it’s fantastic the police are doing something to engage with local youth on a different level – it’s creating teamwork and a sense of belonging.”

Sgt Grayson said professional basketball coach Craig Rowe and Queensland Cricket had worked on ball skills with those who attended and the opportunity to try two different sports was popular.

Off-leash area to remain DOGS will permanently be allowed to roam free on a section of Queens Beach North at Scarborough thanks to a decision

by Moreton Bay Regional Council.

The decision ended four years of uncertainty and followed extensive consultation. Almost 2500 people responded to a survey about whether a trial offleash area should be made permanent.

Mayor Peter Flannery

said the northern section of Queens Beach North was made a permanent Dog Off-Leash Area from April 1.

“The feedback we received provided hard evidence about the growing demand for off-leash areas on beaches within the region,” he said.

“However it also highlighted the legitimate concerns about a lack of animal control in this area, with negative noise and

property impacts for nearby residents.

“To balance these two interests, a shorter 357m stretch of Queens Beach North will be designated as a permanent Dog OffLeash Area (DOLA) for 24 hours, seven days a week.”

The new area spans from the rock groyne at the beach’s northern end, to three houses short of Griffith Rd at the south, in contrast with the trial area, which ended on the south

side of Griffith Rd. Mayor Flannery said: “While 77 percent of people who took part in the survey supported a DOLA, it was very clear in the feedback that there was also a significant need for more regulation.

“To address those needs we have reduced the size of the area and extra signage will be installed to clearly advise the limits of the area and rules for appropriate use.”

Rangers will patrol the site and will have the power to issue infringement notices.

“Dog owners must maintain effective control of their pets at all times, even within the DOLA, and dogs must be leashed while walking from vehicle to the DOLA,” Mayor Flannery said. “This has been a great exercise for the Council to better understand the habits and needs of beachgoers and dog owners.”

Renewed focus on prevention A NEW tool will help assess whether police attend calls for help in a bid to ensure the best use of resources for community safety.

Moreton Police District Officer Superintendent John Hallam said the new framework, called SOLVE (Severity, Opportunity, Likelihood, Vulnerability and Expectation), would ensure police were where they were needed most.

“Police will still be attending very urgent and urgent matters and those matters that require a direct police response,” Supt Hallam said.

He said for issues that were assessed as not needing a direct police response, callers would be invited to report concerns online, by phone through Police Link or by visiting a local station.

Supt Hallam said SOLVE aimed to free up police resources to allow a move towards preventing crime more effectively.

Run by Pristine Peninsula, the program targets a 2km radius of the Snook and King streets intersection, Elizabeth Ave, and

Frawley Fields precinct, where rubbish such as fastfood wrappers and cigarette butts lands.

Pristine Peninsula founder Les Barkla said he was delighted the school had joined the campaign.

“To me, it all starts with kids,” Mr Barkla said.

AMA Event Management community service manager Jason Bock said North Lakes by Night would be staged every Saturday behind IKEA, where circuses were often held.

“We’ll be joining the circus from time to time,” Mr Bock said.

“There will be lots of local handmade crafts, children’s rides and food stalls.

The markets are aiming to open on April 10.

Fines double for illegal parking STORY JODIE POWELL A LEADING disability advocate has welcomed a decision by Moreton Bay Regional Council to double the fine for illegally using a disabled parking bay.

Motorists who park in disabled spaces without a permit will now be fined $533 – up from $266.

Elisha Wright, who was named Moreton Bay Citizen of the Year in 2019 for her work advocating for disability access and inclusion, said Council was only the fourth in Queensland to make the change.

“It’s great to see,” Ms Wright said.

“Along with greater infringement penalties, we need strong enforcement as well.”

Moreton Bay Region councillors voted to increase fines for people who disobeyed the law, aligning with the State Government’s penalty increase.

Mayor Peter Flannery said Council would do its part to ensure parking in public spaces for people with a disability was available to those who needed it.

“One in five residents in the Moreton Bay Region live with a disability, so it’s important that we create opportunities and a vibrant lifestyle for all, regardless of their level of ability,” Mayor Flannery said.

“Frankly, if you’re using these carparks without any regard for the significant and negative impact that kind of selfishness can have on other people’s

lives, then you deserve to pay a bigger fine.”

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey welcomed Council’s decision.

“Drivers who illegally park in disability spaces should expect to be harshly penalised,” Mr Bailey said.

“It’s arrogant and selfish behaviour that the community doesn’t support.

“That’s why the State Government passed legislation last year to enable Councils to crack down on it.

Mayor Flannery said the availability of accessible parking was vital to ensure people living with disabilities could safely and easily access community facilities and services.

Ms Wright said the actions of thoughtless motorists could ruin her day.

“If I can’t get a parking space where I can get access safely, then I have to go home – there’s no option for me.

“It means missing appointments, being late for work, not being able to visit my children’s school.

“This is the largest parking infringement in the state, so hopefully it will deter people.”

Ms Wright said she was working with the State Government to change legislation so councils could enforce parking rules in private spaces such as shopping centres, as well as on public property.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery said the $3.6 million construction tender for the $5.7 million project had been awarded to Pentacon Pty Ltd. The project is jointly funded, with the Federal Government contributing $4 million and Council the remainder.

Mayor Flannery said the short-term pain of construction works would be worth the long-term gain of a more efficient road network.

Falling branches are a hazard for pedestrians and cyclists.

WORK will start soon to remove dead branches and trim trees along a 1.7km section of busy footpath in North Lakes.

It follows concerns raised by resident Ken Butler about large trees overhanging the pathway which “without warning,

drop branches”.

Mr Butler, who lives on Copeland Dve, said the path, between Wywurri Creek Bridge and the former golf course clubhouse, was used by pedestrians and cyclists.

He said the falling branches could be up to four metres long … “large enough to cause serious injury to pedestrians and

cyclists travelling below”.

Mr Butler believes eucalyptus trees, around 20 years old, were the main cause. He said there was a similar problem about five years ago.

Council has arranged for the necessary tree trimming and removal of dead branches along the pathway to be done within the next six weeks.

DBCYP director Janine Botfield said DBCYP had worked to help women find independence and financial

stability for years, and took on client feedback about wanting to learn how to set up their own businesses to create the course.

“It’s about looking at selfemployment for women because it’s flexible and interesting,” Ms Botfield said.

Exploring Enterprise takes participants from brainstorming ideas,

through profiling potential customers and the nuts and bolts of setting up a business to brand identity and business development.

Ms Bryant said Exploring Enterprise was already helping her refine her business ideas, which focussed on wellness and mental health.

“My confidence is building with each module

− I am pretty determined.

“I’d like to start a business for children and families for growth and resilience,” Ms Bryant said.

“If you start with kids, then they have the skills and resilience and selfappreciation.”

Ms Bryant said Exploring Enterprise had opened her eyes to working more flexibly and being in

control of her own destiny, so she could have more flexible time to spend with her children – Olivia, 11 and Patrick, 8.

“They are my everything.

I want to show them their Mum works hard and can achieve anything she sets her mind to,” she said.

“I want to inspire, support and guide them well while caring for other

families and children in my community.”

With a diploma in counselling, Ms Bryant plans to study social work and is taking part in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy – skills-based group therapy that covers emotional regulation and mindfulness. “I want to take an all-round approach to wellness, she said.

CHILDREN and families have been watching a new swimming pool take shape at Sesame Lane Care and Kindergarten’s Kippa-Ring campus, and are looking forward to its official opening on April 17.

The pool, which is expected to be finished by the end of this week, will be officially opened by Australian swimming legend Susie O’Neill during a family fun day from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

The event will include rides, a flag-raising ceremony and the chance for families to check out the new pool and the three centres at the Kippa-Ring campus, at Regency Street.

Head of Sesame Lane Kerri Smith said the 3x4m ‘drop-in pool’ had been designed with the needs of children in mind and the features essential for learn-to-swim lessons.

The aim is to create an environment for children to feel confident and competent as they learn to swim.

Parents of these younger children would need to attend lessons.

“We have been running swimming lessons with kindergarten children already, but have needed to take them to pools offsite,” Ms Smith said.

She said changes to regulations involving the transport of children in childcare made this more difficult. If the pool at Kippa-Ring is a success, it is

The new model also has 360 degrees cameras, which monitor what is around you when you are in full-load, off-road.

MAREE Stephenson will leave her Griffin home on May 1 on a journey which could see her ride into the history books.

The 53-year-old plans to return in mid-September as the first woman to cycle 10,000kms on tracks across all 10 Australian deserts.

She will face some of this country’s harshest terrain, with no support team, temperatures down to minus 5 degrees and limited access to water and services on the way.

The driving force behind this 140-day adventure is to raise $10,000 for Beyond Blue, the mental health and wellbeing support organisation.

“Basically, out there I’m it,” said Maree, whose only companion will be Banjo, her “fat-wheeled bike” named after an Australian dinosaur.

“I thrive on edgy adventures in the natural world putting me outside my comfort zone.

“There is no better time to promote mental health. Living with COVID is a mental challenge for all of us to build resilience together.

“Donations will improve the lives if individuals, families and communities affected by anxiety, despression and suicide.”

While the route is new, Maree is no strange to marathon rides having cycled around Australia and to Mongolia. It was on the former that the idea of a desert challenge began.

Maree went through part of the Great Sandy Desert: “I loved those parts of WA and realised you could do a bike ride across desert.

Now is the time to do it.”

Peninsula Animal Aid has been named the event’s charity partner for 2021 and the volunteers who provide care, rehabilitation and the chance of a forever home for stray, surrendered or abandoned dogs and cats could not be happier.

President Anne Denton said the organisation, which celebrates its 5th decade this year, was very grateful for the opportunity.

Jetty 2 Jetty organisers – Moreton Bay Road Runners and Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism - will donate a portion from each registration to PAA and runners will also have the opportunity to donate, when they register.

“This a wonderful opportunity for people in the community to hear a little more about our shelter,” Ms Denton said.

“Even of more value, are the funds that will assist in caring for the cats and dogs that

will stay at PAA until they find their forever homes.

“We help many hundreds of animals each year, either through taking in stray or surrendered animals, whose owners, for a variety of reasons, may not be able to continue to care for their pets. PAA also helps reunite many stray animals with their owners.”

The organisation receives no formal funding, but is grateful to the local community for their donations, sponsorship of its pens, support of its calendars and events, and of its hydro bath.

“We are a no-kill shelter, run entirely by volunteers,” Ms Denton said.

“We have 110 volunteers and we are very grateful to them, without whom we would not be able to function,” Ms Denton said.

Moreton Bay Road Runners committee member Andy Almond said the club had always supported local charities and tried to give back to them and small businesses.

Moments shared in book launch MORE than 50 invited guests attended the book launch of Defining Some Moments during a lunch at The Golden Ox Restaurant last month.

It is an anthology of 75 poems composed by well-known poet and community champion Doug Morris.

Master of Ceremonies Ron Goward spoke of Mr Morris’ 43 years as a local scout leader, 20 years of service in the Rotary Club of KippaRing North Lakes, including two terms as president.

Mr Goward also spoke about Mr Morris’ generosity of spirit and his kindness to many, particularly during his 50 years as a local jeweller and watchmaker.

During his address, Mr Morris acknowledged those in attendance who had inspired many of his poems.

He said the book was 20 years in the making and spoke of his childhood in an orphanage and how so many of those present had supported him over the years.

resident dedicated the book to his mother Dot, who he met for the first time at 51 years of age.

There was also a poignant moment for all during his recital of the poem, To My Mother.

His final words: “You gave me the love that Neerkol denied as I wept from a hurt so deep inside, and as my heart fell apart with such grief and despair, you gave me your hearts full of warmth and real care” prompted a standing ovation.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT MOTORCYCLISTS will ride from Caboolture to Redcliffe, through to Samford and Woodford on May 1 to take a stand against domestic and family violence.

And they’re promising a sea of red on the first Moreton Bay Red Ride.

It will raise awareness of the issue and money for three children’s charities, Act for Kids, Save the Children Australia, Variety – the Children’s Charity.

It’s an idea of Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Tony Latter (Div 12), which is now being driven by Caboolture Rotary Club with the support of businesses, politicians and individuals.

During the official launch last week at Caboolture Sports Club, Cr Latter explained: “In the last financial year, in Moreton Bay we’ve had 2681 DVO applications. In Queensland, 44,179 DVOs were made 77 per cent

of these were to protect a female applicant,” he said.

“In previous work, with the social wellbeing arena including the department of child safety and foster care support, I’ve seen firsthand the impact domestic violence has on the people involved.

“I believe everyone has a responsibility to speak out and take action. In 2020, we saw a lot of risk factors increase at the same time protective factors were limited. Children were told not to go to school, which for some was the only safe place they had.

“As well as saying there is no place for domestic violence, it is important that awareness and acceptance is raised for intervention and local agencies.

“And for those who are experiencing domestic violence to know that there is support.”

Cr Latter said it was an event that could bring together government, social support agencies, the business community and individuals.

Red Ride will launch from Caboolture Showgrounds, with a blessing of the bike.

Then hundreds of bikes (decorated red) will make their way through Morayfield, Redcliffe, Samford Valley, Dayboro, Mt Mee and finish at Woodford.

At Woodford, there will be a smoking ceremony by the Jinibara people and a motorbike show and shine, stalls and presentations hosted by 101.5FM, and a concert by Dave Reynolds.

Seniors driven to learn STORY KYLIE KNIGHT ROTHWELL’s Betty Melton held a truck licence for 21 years and has been driving cars for 42, but says we all need a road rules refresher from time to time.

The 86-year-old is a life member of the Active 60s and Better program and joined 17 members who attended the RACQ’s Years Ahead session for older drivers at Deception Bay PCYC on March 25.

She only started driving at 44, but loves it, even travelling to Quilpie and Eromanga last year.

“You can always learn something and I want to keep driving for as long as possible,” she said. “Public transport isn’t great around here and I love long-distance driving.”

So, what did the experienced driver learn?

“I didn’t know motorbikes could drive on the shoulder of the road and go through traffic. I knew the roundabout rules,” she said.

“I think that everybody would have learned quite a lot and it is important.

“I got the new road rules book a few years ago and studied it. I think a few rules have even changed

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT STUDENTS at Deception Bay State High School are learning much more than what is on the national curriculum, they are learning about their own character strengths during classes aimed at bolstering their wellbeing for life.

The school has been running the Virtue Program for the past three years, offering it to children not taking part in interschool sport on Thursday afternoons.

Deputy Principal Darrell Crimson said it was a continuation of work teachers had already started, and while outcomes were difficult to quantify, he had noticed positive changes.

“We started to focus on character strength as a part of our wider responsibility in pastoral care,” Mr Crimson said.

The program is based on positive education and the work of American psychologist Dr Martin Seligman, who pioneered positive psychology and the PERMA framework.

The framework’s principles are: positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplish-

ments.

Students learn about the virtues of wisdom and knowledge, humanity, justice, temperance, transcendence and courage.

They investigate 24 character strengths and learn how to identify them in themselves and others.

They also learn ways to enhance relationships through the combination of everyone’s character strengths.

The program helps them look at ways they can improve their lives, rather than what is wrong with their lives.

“Part of that is looking at character, building character vocabulary will give them strength,” he said.

The students, in Years 7, 8 and 9, have completed a questionnaire to identify their strengths.

Students learn that some strengths can be over-used to their detriment. The program aims to make them more self-aware and able to manage this.

Mr Crimson said it was difficult to quantify the program’s impact but year level leaders had embraced it. “They are identifying strengths in others and

empathising with people.

They understand themselves a lot better with what motivates them and can see it in other people,” he said.

Mr Crimson described a Year 10 boy who was not afraid to stand up to anyone. Through the program he was able to understand strength could be overused to his detriment and it affected those around him.

Another student was able to use journaling to identify her strengths.

Mr Crimson said the writing component gave students another way of expression, and Youtube videos were even used to demonstrate some points.

Olivia said: “It’s taught me quite a few ways to show different emotions and how to show zest and not give up”.

Mr Crimson said there had been inhouse training with staff about character to help them better understand themselves as well.

“It’s really important our

kids have an understanding and vocabulary and framework they can easily use when it comes to understanding the strengths of others and how they work because it builds empathy for people and it’s also a way in which we can have positive conversations with kids,” he said.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the ASPIRE Circular Economy was a matching service for businesses to exchange or buy resources that would otherwise be discarded.

“This is a win-win-win initiative that protects the environment, boosts business opportunities, diverts waste from landfill and gives businesses a new income stream,” Mayor Flannery said.

“One business’s trash can now literally be another business’s treasure.

“Best of all there’s no middle-man, just log on to ASPIRE’s online marketplace where you can trade business waste as a resource - for free.”

Mayor Flannery said anything from old office chairs, paper and timber offcuts to used vehicle parts could be disposed of as part of the program.

“Aspire’s online platform sets businesses of up to 100 employees on the path to the circular economy by creating new supply chains, connecting businesses, building innovative solutions and helping everyone involved to recycle.”

Lea Eckersley said the company used a circular recycling loop for its paper waste, which is turned into recycled toilet paper rolls through a commercial arrangement with Australian Paper Collection.

She said Eckersleys also recycled cardboard and aluminium waste under similar arrangements, with about 200 aluminium print plates diverted from landfill each day.

Ms Eckersley said the ASPIRE platform would potentially help them to extend their recycling operations even further.

“This is a great innovative initiative Council has taken to support local businesses in the Moreton Bay Region towards reducing business’s impact on the environment while simultaneously creating a viable commercial outcome for waste management,” she said.

“Eckersley Print Group, holding both the ISO 14001 Environmental Accreditation and full FSC certification, has been significantly invested in environmental sustainability for several years and commenced the closed recycling loop of our paper waste into toilet paper rolls in July 2020.

RECENT rain and warm weather have created perfect conditions for termites to move around and build in soft soil and damp timber.

Stevie Redback managing director Steve Hughes said the damaging pests would be “incredibly active”.

“The wet weather makes it better for termites because the ground’s soft and people will be disturbing things in their gardens as they clean up,” Mr Hughes said.

He said if you thought you had termites in your yard, it was important not to disturb them. Just call an expert for help.

Cook three cups of quinoa, according to the packet instructions.

Heat 1 tbls of peanut oil in a non-stick frying pan on medium heat, then add garlic and vegetables and stir fry for 2-3 minutes.

Add 1 tbls tamari and fry until they are just cooked through, then set aside.

Return the pan to medium heat, add the remaining peanut oil and the beaten egg. Cook the egg for 2 minutes, then add the quinoa, vegetables, chicken and the remaining tamari.

Fry until the quinoa is warm and the egg is cooked.

Fold in the coriander and chopped green onion just before serving.

• 3 tbls extra virgin olive oil • 2 tbls maple syrup • 4 sprigs thyme (leaves stripped from the stems) • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 cup (150g) crumbled feta or goat’s cheese • 2 tbls balsamic vinegar

Prepare the pastry by mixing together salt, butter and flour in a food processor until it is a coarse mixture and the butter has almost disappeared. Add the water, one tablespoon at a time and mix until the dough starts to clump together. Remove it from the food processor, flatten it to a disc shape, cover and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes.

Preheat oven to 180C. In a bowl, toss the beetroot, oil, vinegar, maple syrup and thyme. Season with salt and pepper.

Put the beetroot mix in a baking dish and cover tightly with foil.

Bake for 30-45 minutes until the vegetables are cooked.

Roll out the pastry, a little larger than your 22cm pie dish or tart tin. The pastry should be 2-3mm thick.

Lay the pastry in the tin and lightly press against the sides, so it is an even thickness and reaches the top of the sides.

Pierce a few holes at the bottom to allow steam to escape during baking.

Bake the pie shell for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown.

Remove from the oven and set aside to cool.

When the beetroot mixture is cooked, please it in the tart shell and sprinkle with cheese and thyme.

Serve warm or at room temperature.

I’m regularly asked, ‘What’s the best bait?’, and my reply is always, ‘What’s your intended target species?’.

The golden rule when bait fishing in most scenarios is that fresh is best, the fresher the better, with live bait usually delivering the best results.

Each species and location will usually have a bait that delivers better results than others. If we match the bait that a particular species is feeding on, at a particular time, at a particular location, we’re in a better position for success. For example, if pelagic species are harassing and feeding on small baitfish, using worms as bait isn’t the wisest choice. Likewise, fishing for whiting with pilchards is probably going to see us going home empty handed.

Once I decide my target species, I choose my location based on experience, research, or sometimes I’m just prospecting to see if the species are in that particular spot. I’ll then choose my bait based on what type frequents that location or what I know my target species feeds on.

Again, whiting like worms, pelagics like baitfish, etc. If I match the bait that naturally occurs in a spot, I’m more likely to be successful. The fish are there because the bait’s there.

If we look around, there’s a mountain of information that can assist us in choosing our bait. Are there small baitfish in the area? Are they being harassed or acting nervously?

Are there crabs in the rock pools?

Are there other shellfish in the area or worms?

If we choose our bait based on what we observe in the area, we’re much further ahead than using whatever we could get. Make a conscious effort to look and you’ll be surprised at how much is going on around you that’s hugely beneficial to your success when thought about in the right way.

And remember, there’s a definite distinction between fresh bait, frozen bait that’s been thawed, or bait that’s been sitting in a freezer for months.

Ask FREQUENTLY on social media, photos of a type of box jellyfish in Moreton Bay or offshore are posted and shared.

The animal photographed is the Morbakka jellyfish. It is also known as the Fire Jelly or Moreton Bay Stinger.

It is not the same species as the “true” box jellyfish, that is typically found further north, but which is slowly moving its distribution further south.

The Morbakka has been found as far south as Sydney and generally prefers offshore waters but stings requiring medical treatment are known from Moreton Bay, including western Moreton Bay. It is frequently found around Redcliffe.

The Morbakka belong to a group of animals called the Cubozoa and there are about 50 species in the group.

This group of jellyfish are very different from the typical jellyfish you see floating around Moreton Bay. The body or as it is called the bell, of the Morbakka is between 6 and 18 centimetres long with 4 ribbon like tentacles that can be a metre long.

Very little is known specifically about Morbakka, but the general biology of the group is well studied. Cubozoa have very well-developed eyes

The box jellyfish has 24 eyes that do not form images but detect light and dark. Cubozoa actively hunt their prey while typical jellyfish do not. All Cubozoa have nematocysts – specialised stinging cells that contain tiny, barbed harpoons and transfer venom.

The sting of a Morbakka jellyfish can cause Irukandji syndrome – a collection of symptoms that include severe lower back pain, nausea and vomiting, breathing difficulties, profuse sweating, severe cramps and spasms and a feeling of impending doom.

If you are stung or suspected of being stung urgently seek medical treatment.

The good news is that unlike the box jellyfish, no fatalities have been recorded.

The Toilet Paper Effect In recent times we’ve seen crazy, panic buying of consumable items. Whether it be toilet paper, milk, eggs, flour you name it. We all know panic buying causes shortages of essential goods and makes it very difficult for people to do their regular weekly shop. Anxiety: when life appears to be spiralling out of control anxiety kicks in. Buying things you might need is a way to assert some control over the situation by taking an action.

Herd Mentality: people see other people buying up big. They see it in the queues at the shops, the shortages on the shelves and then it’s reinforced by friends on social media. The main stream media blows it to the moon. The herd starts to move fast.

Greed: as the herd moves a percentage of people get plain old greedy.

Fear of missing out: This is a sub-set of greed. It’s where normally rational people get sucked into the greed cycle because of fear of loss. The fear of missing out or FOMO is genuine. People worry more about what they’ll lose if they don’t take action. The ability to make good long-term decisions flies out the window.

See the similarities with real estate? At the moment I believe we are seeing panic buying of property. People are uncertain about future values. People are seeing sold signs going up quickly and properties available to buy are increasingly scarce.

People are seeing lots of competition at inspections. Prices are rising and the media, both social and commercial is driving the hype. This is fuelling the herd and the pressure to buy for many people is intense.

The downside is that for genuine buyers who need a home it has become very awkward (much like going to the loo without toilet paper). CAPTAIN’S CALL IN WHAT was another close game, we fell just short in round two against the Norths Devils.

Despite a spirited comeback, we went down 26-24.

During the week, we dealt with some adversity with the NRL pulling our Warriors-contracted players due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Brisbane.

This meant we would be without 13 of the players who played in our round one outing. We certainly weren’t using this as an excuse and were very confident with the team heading to Bishop Park.

It gave the players, who were disappointed with round one selections, the opportunity to once again play in a Dolphins jersey. Possession was a very telling factor in this game and with our team unable to hold the ball, Norths ran out to an 18-0 lead. We completed at just over 40 percent for the game which isn’t good enough at any level.

Something Dolphins fans should be excited about was the effort to fight back and only lose by two points. We showed just how dangerous we are going to be when we get the fundamentals right.

My Man of the match for the game was fullback Trai Fuller who never stopped trying.

We’re looking forward playing at a packed Moreton Daily Stadium in front of our supporters in round 3 against the Central Queensland Capras for the first home game of the year on April 10. Kickoff is 6pm.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT DOLPHINS hooker Manaia Cherrington says he’s much wiser than he was when he lost his love of footy, while playing NRL, and is now firmly focused on reaching his potential.

For him, that means playing good football every week for the Dolphins and hopefully getting another shot at doing it on the big stage.

But the 26-year-old is not obsessed with thoughts of playing NRL and is just happy to be playing again after more than a year off.

He played for Souths Logan in 2019, but before that had risen through the Wests Tigers system to the NRL as a 20-year-old.

“I played a few years at the Tigers, had a little stint at the Sharks and then also at the Warriors a couple of years ago. Now, I find my-

self here trying to get back into it,” Cherrington said.

“That’s still the dream and the drive. I’ve got to put in some good performances hopefully and see where it takes me.”

His roommate Jordan Grant played with the Dolphins in 2019 and Cherrington said he was weighing up a season at Redcliffe or Wynnum, when the choice became clear.

“I spoke to Moggy (Adam Mogg) and I spoke to the Wynnum coach and I fitted in with Moggy and what he wanted and Crusher (Grant Cleal) as well,” he explained.

“I think it’s the culture and the high standards here. That’s the type of player I want to be. I want to be a player that has high standards and be pretty honest with myself.”

The side has had one win and one loss from the first

two rounds of the Intrust Super Cup season, and while the loss to Norths Devils was not what Cherrington hoped for, it has given him and the team plenty to work on.

“The game’s sped up a lot I’ve noticed in the first two games and even in the trials we got towelled-up against Souths but obviously came back but it’s definitely an attacking game,” he said.

“I know games are won on defence but with the new six-again rule – if you’re not fit, if you’re not completing at 85 per cent it’s a struggle to win a game. Then again, we have to have confidence in ourselves to bounce back.

“Those are two lessons I’ve learnt – man it’s fast, real fast – if you’re not fit enough, if you’re not ready mentally, you get blown off

the park.”

It’s a tempo that suits Cherrington’s game.

“I try to base my game around Brendan Smith, who’s a running hooker or Damien Cook. I’m a running hooker, so it does suit me and that’s another reason I’m really excited too,” he said.

So, what is he hoping to learn this season at the Dolphins?

“I just take each game as it comes. I’ll just try to be all-ears with the coaching staff. Look who we have

here – we have Adam Mogg who’s done it all, Justin Hodges who’s done it all and Scotty Hill,” he said.

“Just being around a young group here who are keeping you on your toes is good. One thing with me is probably preparation - I’ve got to just make sure I take that on board.

“This next 12 months is massive. It could make or break me. I’m at the age now where I’ve got to really put all my eggs into one basket and give footy another crack.”

‘What a weekend’ for teenage racer Kyle STORY NICK CROCKFORD REDCLIFFE’S Kyle Evans made a stunning start to the 2021 Queensland State Formula Ford Championship on March 26-27.

The 16-year-old won the opening round at Warwick taking first, second, third and fourth in the four races, with the fastest lap of the weekend and fastest lap in two of the races.

That gave him victory in the Duratec section of the state Formula Ford titles,

three weeks after an impressive ninth place in the first national round.

“Wow, what a weekend,” he said. “Huge thanks to Chris Purvis for dragging the best out of me, while setting up the best handling car.”

Evans qualified third on the Saturday with a best time at Morgan Park of 1 minute 19.534 seconds before finishing second and fourth in that day’s races.

The following day, Evans started fourth in race three and finished the 10-lap race

third with a best lap time for the weekend of 1:19.138.

He started race four in third place, moved up to second on lap three and took the lead the following lap to win the race with a best lap time of 1:20.215.

That gave Evans overall victory in the Formula Ford Duratec category from Ryder Quinn and Cameron McLeod.

THREE members of Redcliffe Little Athletics will be presented with their Queensland team uniforms at a special ceremony this month.

Skye Presland-Tack, Daniel Harlow and Zobair Mohammed secured spots in the Under 13 squad after impressing at the state titles.

In its 48-year history, Redcliffe Little Athletics previously only had seven mem-

bers in the state’s Under 13 squad … until now.

The Australian Championships have been cancelled due to COVID, but Little Athletics Queensland will hold an event on April 24 for those in the 2020 and 2021 teams, with a presentation of uniforms.

It follows an excellentstate titles for Redcliffe with gold, silver and bronze medals - and a host of personal best performances.

Rylee rises to meet Jess Schipper challenge

REDCLIFFE’S Rylee Smith was in outstanding form at the 2021 Speedo National Preparation Meet and Jess Schipper Challenge.

The North Lakes resident won six gold medals and a bronze from 10 events at Brisbane Aquatic Centre last month.

Representing the Redcliffe Leagues Swimming Club (RLSC), Rylee won the 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, 200m Individ-

ual Medley, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly.

She was third in the 50m freestyle and clocked five personal best (pb) times.

Club colleague Daniel Baker was also on top of the podium, winning gold in the 200m freestyle multi class in a personal best time.

Barry Pope had a pb in his event and Zaine Vardon three pbs from four events.

The meeting is named after the former RLSC and Australia star Jess Schipper who won Olympic and World and Commonwealth gold medals as well as breaking world records in a glittering career.

Schipper was at the event which is used by many swimmers to post qualifying times and race practice before the Australian Age Championships on the Rylee Smith, RLSC coach Wanda Drew and Zaine Vardon Gold Coast.

Redcliffe PCYC warmed up for its opening Capital League 2 football fixture at Kangaroo Point Rovers on Saturday with seniors and reserves both winning just before Easter. Two of the club’s divisional teams also won and a third got a draw.

Dragons are back

Deception Bay Dragons make their return to Football Brisbane’s senior men’s competition when they host Bethania Rams in Capital League 3 on Sunday, kick-off 3pm. Dragons replaced North Lakes Mustangs when they withdrew from the 2021 season.

Entries are now being taken for the Warehouse Cricket Association’s winter season which starts on the first weekend in May. Teams can enter for the Saturday and Sunday leagues, as well as Under 13-16 divisions. Peninsula Cricket Club has teams in the Warehouse leagues.

Rep sides shine at carnival THE REP teams at Redcliffe Leagues Netball Association (RLNA) have delivered again.

RLNA had three runners-up and one winner at the Brisbane Netball Association Representative Carnival, last month.

The Under 15 Red team won its section, while the Under 12, Under 13 and Under 14 Red sides took second places.

It adds to the RLNA’s representative program which has grown from four teams eight years ago, to 11 today.

RLNA also placed seventh at last year’s Nissan State Age Championships, held over four days against 215 clubs from across Queensland.

“We are classed as a small association with the number of players for rep sides,” said Deb Killalea, who co-ordinates the program at RLNA with Jody Jones.

“But our players and coaches do so well.”

The rep program focusses on being “supportive, respectful, committed and inclusive” with the same opportunities for all to progress.

That approach has seen a 20 per cent growth in numbers on last year at KR Benson Park, off Maine Rd, Clontarf.

There was also huge praise from parents for the RLNA’s work during the COVID lockdown last year with zoom meetings keeping selected players closely connected.

Silver lining for polo bears

SEVEN Redcliffe players came home with silver medals from the Brisbane Water Polo Grand Finals, held late last month.

All were in five North Brisbane Polo Bears which won one premiership and had four runners-up at The Valley and Somerville House pool venues.

Amelie Hoefel and Mia Doyle helped the Polo Bears Under 13A Girls team which lost a close game 2-1 against All Hal-

low. All the goals were in the first quarter.

Trinity Dobson, Ella Bostock, Holly James and Eden McCann were in the Under 13C Girls side which went down 8-6 to Mermaids White – a fine display from a side with some players in their first season.

Goalkeeper Tian Markart and George McLennan were in the Polo Bears Under 15 Boys side which went down 9-6 to Barracudas. The Under 12B Boys

side, a combination of Warriors and Polo Bears, lost 8-3 to Mantras, but the Polo Bears’ Under 14C Girls beat BGGS 4-3 to land its first Brisbane Premiership with coach Ella Hardy.

It was the first Brisbane finals since 2019, due to COVID. North Brisbane Polo Bears had nine teams reach the semi-finals, and five in the finals.

Power set for ‘tough’ derby REGIONAL pride is at stake on Saturday when Peninsula Power face their NPL state-league rivals Moreton Bay United Jets at AJ Kelly Park, 6,30pm.

Power are second and Jets fifth, level on points and separated only by goal difference, but Power have won all four NPL meetings between the sides.

The COVID lockdown also gave Power an extra break with their FFA Cup tie at New Farm postponed.

At the time of writing, Jets were still to face Olympic.

“The break’s probably good for us as we have had some injuries,” said Power coach Aaron Philp.

“Moreton Bay has started well. Royce (Brownlie) sets them up well and they have the young lad (Zac Kierpal) up front who is doing well.

“It will be a really tough game. The open spaces of our field (AJ Kelly Park) might help them. It’ll be a really tough game.

“Moreton Bay have a lot of goals in them and our front half is going well.”

In one of the club’s most successful events, the golds all came in the 40+ category, in Mixed and Open races over 200m, 500m and

The three silver medals were from the Open and Mixed Prems – paddlers over 12 with no maximum age – over 500m and 1km.

Red Dragons’ three bronze medals were in the

55+ Mixed 500m and 1km, Open 55+ 200m and one from the Open 40+ 500m.

In the latter, one crewman broke his paddle with the first stroke, but continued with half a paddle helping the boat to third, just 3.58 seconds off a silver medal.

Red Dragon’s 40+ Mixed 500m and 200m teams won all their heats and finals, while on day two, all Red-

cliffe crews that did not medal were fourth or fifth.

Dragons are hoping for more success at the National Coast to Coast Festival in May. The club started in 2005 with 68 members, a number which has now grown to 102 catering for all fitness levels and ages – currently the youngest is 14 and oldest in their 70s.

“I was happy to get the points,” said Philp, “I think we deserved it in terms of the game plan and the way we executed it.”

Pengelly’s goal stretched the NPL sequence of the away team winning every match between the sides.

Mitch carries local hopes to national titles MITCHELL James, from Redcliffe’s Focus Tennis Academy, will be chasing more gold this month in Melbourne.

The 28 year old is playing singles and doubles in the Australian Championships for those with an intellectual impairment.

Mitchell has played in the event before winning the singles and doubles.

“It has always been a

Mitchell, who lives in Burpengary, started playing tennis at the age of five

and his successes include the 2018 Special Olympics Australia National Games singles and doubles.

He was also runner-up in the 2016 Newcombe Medal for Most Outstanding Athlete with a disability after winning bronze in the INAS World Championships singles and silver in the doubles – while playing with a broken finger.

Teamwork key to grand final STORY NICK CROCKFORD PENINSULA’S B2N captain Doug Sheridan believes an allround team effort will be a key to Warehouse Cricket Association Grand Final.

between the sides this season Peninsula lead 2-1.

“Every game has gone down to the wire,” said Sheridan. “Statistically all 11 of our players contribute and if we play as a team I am confident we will have a good chance.”

Sheridan said the team would have plans to combat the stronger Toowong play-

ers and it will be a tougher game than the semi-final.

Peninsula posted 146 before skittling St Paul’s, who were fourth, for just 43 with bowler Ross Green taking 6-27 from 20.2 overs.

It was his third haul of five wickets or more this season – two were against Toowong.

“I thought 146 was 20 runs short of par,” said Sheri-

dan, “I was confident, but concerned. I still thought it was a 50:50 game.

“But we bowled very accurately and clinically. We clamped down on their runs and it was a great win.”

The A1 side will not be joining their B2N colleagues in their final after losing to Mater Hill on first innings.

The visitors made 161

from 75 overs with Nick Turner 5-41 and Elijah Rafter 4-46 taking all but one of the wickets.

In reply Peninsula managed 128 from 52 overs, Hayden Marks top scoring with 47 made in more three hours. Steve Adnams hit 26.

Tex lands hat-trick in three different sports STORY NICK CROCKFORD TEX Copeland has a remarkable sporting resume, at the age of 11.

The Mueller College student has reached district level in swimming, Aussie Rules and basketball.

His most recent achievements include being selected for the Sunshine Coast Aussie Rules team, following trials two weeks ago.

Tex had already made the Sunshine Coast’s swimming and basketball squads.

He was also in action at last month’s state school swimming championships where he had a number of personal bests.

“I enjoy them all,” said Tex, “I started playing AFL first, then other sports trying to beat my brother in the garden.

“I probably spend too much time training ... it’s about nine hours a week,” he said with a chuckle.

THE aim of oztag, which was invented in 1992, is to get a tag on the side of your opponent’s shorts to stop them scoring.

Moves were made to launch the sport, for those from three years to seniors, in Redcliffe around eight years ago, but it did not take off.

However, the North Lakes centre at Woodside Community Centre on Discovery Dr, has grown with players from across the Moreton Bay Region playing twice a week.

“It’s a social sport, no training nights or weekends,” said Bek who described it as rugby league “minus the tackling”.

It starts with programs for those aged 3-5 called Tiny Taggers right through to seniors. The oldest player at the North Lakes centre is 67.

North Lakes Oztag junior teams are now preparing for the Junior State Cup at Sunshine Coast Stadium on April 16-18. The Senior State Cup is on June 11-13 at the same venue.
