Capturing memories of Margate STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE words of the man who inspired the Memories of Margate book ring true for the two women who put it together. Well-known peninsula businessman Marle Juster was passionate about local history and when he died, he bequeathed $1000 to the History Redcliffe group for a project. So, when it came to deciding how best to use the money, a book detailing the

history of Margate seemed a logical choice. As Mr Juster’s first shop was in Margate, the group felt it was a fitting project. So, local historians Pat Gee and Margaret Harding started researching the history of the suburb – its people and landmarks. “As Marle always said, if you don’t know your history, you can’t appreciate the present and look to the future,” Mrs Harding said. The book took about 18 months, but is now finished

and will be launched in the coming week. Ms Gee said it was a challenging project, with many landmarks now gone and COVID-19 shutdown and restrictions hampering research efforts. Some of the landmarks featured include the water tower, but also the Red Cross Home and Methodist Youth Centre which Ms Gee said were disappearing from living memory. “People who spent time there as children are now

adults wanting to know where it is and what happened to it,” she said. The pair particularly enjoyed telling the stories of migrants who moved to Margate from England and soldiers who were given cheap land in recognition of their war service. Mr Juster was one of them. They have sourced information from families. “I just appreciate those that opened their hearts and shared their family stories,” Mrs Harding said.

Festival Reddy to set sail REDCLIFFE Festival of Sails is back and COVID Safe in 2021. The beloved foreshore festival, which traditionally kicks-off the Easter long weekend, was sadly first on the chopping block for event cancellations in 2020. In egg-citing news, it is returning on April 2 from 9am to 4pm at the Suttons Beach foreshore. The event team is working closely with Queensland Health to deliver the festival and, with patron safety top priority this year, Redcliffe Festival of Sails will be delivered under a COVID-Safe event plan. There will be a few changes, in the spirit of safety, and all patrons will be required to scan in using a QR code for contract tracing purposes. The program will still feature three stages of live music and entertainment, more than 100 market stalls, a visit from the Easter Bunny, Pop-up Ice Cream Fair, sand sculpting workshops, an Easter Egg Hunt and, best of all, a perfect view of the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race. Children will need to register for the Sesame Lane Easter Egg Hunt, with the first 500 guaranteed a spot. They will be given a map to find as many eggs as they can throughout the festival site. Green light for vital new road STORY NICK CROCKFORD WORK will start within weeks on connecting two main roads in Mango Hill. Moreton Bay Regional Council has brought forward plans to link Chelmsford Rd with Kinsellas Rd West at Mango Hill Village. Construction of the new link road is likely to start between July and September, with preparation work to be completed before that. It will reduce traffic using streets off Chelmsford Rd and link to Lamington Rd, which is to become the village’s second exit onto Anzac Ave. The connection had been recommended by Mango Hill Progress Association (MHPA) due to increased development and traffic on the west side of the village. This has included 157 units between Muriel St and Kinsellas Rd West, with more possible in the area surrounded by John

St and Chelmsford Rd. At last week’s MHPA meeting, some concerns were raised over the connection being a fifth entry point onto the Kinsellas Rd West roundabout near the new shopping centre. So too, the loss of some trees and a long-standing ‘calm area’, as well as increased traffic. Cr Jodie Shipway (Div 4) will pass on one resident’s submission to council planners. MHPA President Laurence Christie said: “The association will continue to liaise with local residents and council to seek the most practical and safe implementation of projects”. The Lamington Rd connection to Anzac Ave, at the Capestone Blvd intersection, is in council’s 202122 budget. Cr Shipway said the $3.3 million cost would be split between the next financial year and 2022-23, with work likely to start March-June 2022.

STORY JODIE POWELL BEING named the AREA Most Influential Woman in the Property Market for 2020 has given North Lakes property manager Laura Valenti a powerful platform to raise awareness of domestic and family violence. The managing director of Solutions Property Management received the award for her work educating staff and property owners

about the role they could play in supporting victims. Ms Valenti said she and others in the industry were uniquely placed to help people who experienced violence. “We’ve always had domestic and family violence on our radar, but COVID has probably brought it out even more,” she said. “We are not counsellors, but property managers are a bit like hairdressers, with

an unusual relationship with our clients. As part of our job we go into homes where not even her family would be invited in.” Ms Valenti said the intimacy of the relationship and four-monthly visits to homes allowed property managers an insight into women’s lives. The Solutions Property Management website has links to support resources and newsletters to tenants

and owners contain information about the issue too, as well as tips for property maintenance. Ms Valenti said ther company dealt with women fleeing their property because of violence, and worked with owners to release them from leases without penalty. “The lease can be a financial burden and whether or not the perpetrator is living there it needs to be terminated,” she said.

Bid to unclog streets near hospital STORY KYLIE KNIGHT REDCLIFFE Hospital management will encourage staff to use the onsite carpark and parking restrictions will tighten in surrounding streets, following a meeting with residents on earlier this month. State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath and Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Karl Winchester (Div 6) met residents at Mungara Park, Redcliffe, on March 6 to hear their concerns about parking congestion in side streets near the hospital. “Acknowledging that there is an on-going issue, myself, Cr Karl Winchester, the Moreton Bay Regional Council and hospital management sought feedback from residents,” Mrs D’Ath said. “The feedback we received from the community is the need to improve safety and accessibility as well as more frequent enforcement from parking inspectors.” Mrs D’Ath said hospital management was also working with staff to encourage them to use the on-campus carpark.

Cr Winchester said Moreton Bay Regional Council had proposed the introduction of formalised parking bays in each of the affected streets, and the installation of yellow no-stopping lines to improve sightlines at intersections. “It’s vital residents have

safe access to their homes and local streets. The work we’re going to carry out focuses on increasing lineof-sight and creating clear no-parking areas around driveways,” he said. “This first round of line marking will increase safety by reducing the number

of cars that can legally park in the surrounding streets.” Council is finalising plans and will begin line marking in the coming weeks. A Tilley St resident, who did not want to be named, said they had been actively campaigning for changes

since about June last year, but first raised concerns with Moreton Bay Regional Council three years ago. The resident welcomed the plan and hoped it would make a difference. “I’m confident this will address the issues, but it needs to be monitored

properly in all the streets near the hospital,” the resident said. Council, the State Government and Redcliffe Hospital have committed to continuing working with residents to improve safety and accessibility.

Motorists are spoilt for choice STORY NICK CROCKFORD OUR region’s fast-growing population is being fuelled by an increasing number of service stations – many in clusters on major roads. There are almost 100 fuel stations in the Moreton Bay Region, with South Pine Rd at Brendale appearing set for a fourth servo in a 1.2km stretch. Such concentrations are increasingly common with four fuel stops in 2km on Elizabeth Ave/ Snook St in Redcliffe and 11 in 8.5km from Halpine Dr, Mango Hill to Lipscombe Rd, Deception Bay. Dr Gary Mortimer, Retail Expert at QUT Business School, said the trend will continue. “We are becoming more mobile and most councils are approving more and more development applications for upgrades and new service stations,” Dr Mortimer said. “The impact of COVID has seen more people returning home and more getting a cheap second car to avoid using public transport. “Service station owners are also looking at commuter travel, so you have

stations on opposite sides of road, one to get the morning commuters and another for the evening commute. “As residential growth continues in areas such as Morayfield, Burpengary, Redcliffe, North Lakes, Mango Hill there will be more opportunities for fuel stations. SENIORS experienced the joy feeling the waves lapping at their feet, testdriving a new beach-proof wheelchair on the shores of Redcliffe earlier this month. In their first outing since the COVID-19 pandemic began, a group of Ozcare Clontarf residents took turns in trying out the new Sandcruiser wheelchair. “I love the ocean – it is my passion and is very therapeutic and my husband loved it too, but if it wasn’t for the beach wheelchair, I wouldn’t be able to go on the beach at all,” resident Hazel Barnard said. Going to the beach again was a special moment for Mrs Barnard, who lost her husband Gerald in October. The couple was married for 52 years and raised their family on the Redcliffe peninsula. They regularly tripped down to the ocean for a swim and play. “We would often swim at Woody Point and Bribie Island, but it is over 10 years since I have walked along the beach…I haven’t had the confidence after having three hip replacements,” she said. RATES notices due to be issued on April 7 have been delayed by three weeks. Moreton Bay Regional Council chief executive officer Greg Chemello said the notices would now be issued on April 28. “Rates notices will be delivered three weeks later than usual,” Mr Chemello said “If you have an existing direct debit arrangement, your rates payment will not be affected.” As a result of the delay, the due date would also be extended, to May 28, Mr Chemello said. “Ordinarily, Moreton Bay Regional Council adheres to a strict schedule for the issue of rates notices. “This ensures that our community consistently receives their rates notices at a similar time each quarter. “With the delay of the 2020/21 Q4 notice by three weeks, Council will slightly adjust the issue dates of the next couple of rates levies to ensure that ratepayers are given appropriate time to pay between quarters.”

Next step for former North Lakes golf course LEGAL advice from a barrister engaged by Moreton Bay Regional Council paves the way for the owners of the former North Lakes Golf Course to apply to develop the land as a retirement village and aged care facility. The advice, from Christopher Hughes QC, released last week, determines that the Mango Hill Infrastructure Development Control Plan forms part of the Moreton Bay Regional Planning Scheme. It provides clarity for JH Northlakes Pty Ltd, a company related to the Village Retirement

Group, stating “the provisions of the Mango Hill Infrastructure Development Control Plan which provide that a Retirement Village is prohibited development on the land, are now taken to be an expression of policy that the use is ‘inconsistent’ with the relevant planning document. “It will no longer be prohibited development but an inconsistent use on the land pursuant to this planning document.”. In a letter to residents, Council chief executive officer Greg Chemello said that since 2018, when the

owner announced it was considering development of a retirement village and aged care facility on part of the former golf course land, there had been discussion about whether a development application for such land use could be lawfully made. Mr Chemello’s letter told residents Council would now continue to work in good faith with the owner and Save the North Lakes Golf Course group. Acting Mayor Denise Sims said the intent of the Mango Hill development control plan was to have open space in the area

occupied by the former golf course and Council continued to support that intent. “The golf course is privately owned, Council’s role has been to bring the two parties together and help them by paying for this legal advice,” Acting Mayor Sims said. She said if a development application was submitted it would be impact assessable and Council would seek community comment. COVID-19 jabs begin in Moreton Bay WOODY Point Medical Centre was among the first in the Moreton Bay Region to begin administering Phase 1B COVID-19 vaccines this week. Practice manager Josette said the centre was already booked through to the second week of April. She said the clinic received 80 doses for its first week of vaccinating, with 100 doses expected in future weeks. Phase 1B follows the launch of Phase 1A, in which Redcliffe Hospital administered doses to hospital staff and other frontline workers. Health Minister and Redcliffe MP Yvette D’Ath said the hospital’s COVID-19 vaccine clinic was initially aimed at those on the pandemic’s frontline, but would open to others soon. “The Redcliffe COVID-19 vaccine clinic initially is for our priority phase 1A group, including our hotel quarantine and frontline health workers,” she said. Diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease just weeks before his 30th birthday, Luke is now just 39, but he has been in care designed for older people because there has been no alternative. Mrs D’Ath said men were about a decade behind women in this regard. “How many professional men will go to their boss and say they want to have time off because they’re having a child, or have to leave early to collect the kids and do that on a regular basis?” She said women needed to choose to challenge how they viewed themselves and choose to be happy every day. Father Peter farewelled STORY JODIE POWELL FORMER Parish Priest of Redcliffe City Parish Father Peter Gillam has been remembered as a man of the people. Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Cr Mick Gillam (Div. 8) paid tribute to his second-cousin at last week’s council meeting. Born at Clifton on June 3, 1938, Fr Peter was ordained in 1962 at Stephen’s Cathedral and appointed Assistant Priest at St Bernadette’s, Scarborough. His next appointment was to Pius XII Provincial Seminary at Banyo, which led him overseas to study at St Peter’s in Rome. When he returned to Australia, he taught moral theology at the Banyo Seminary and became Vice-Rector in 1976. “He was a people person and didn’t like the academic world as much as looking after parishioners so in January 1977 he was appointed as Administrator of Our Lady Help of Christians at Hendra,” Cr Gillam said. “He became the parish priest there in 1980 - during his time at Hendra he developed a close relationship with the racing fra-

ternity. He was the Racing Chaplain for 30 years.” Cr Gillam said Fr Peter remained involved in the lives of his family throughout his career. “He did a lot of family business as my grandfather, his uncle, was the eldest of seven Gillam brothers,” Cr Gillam said. Holy Cross parish secretary Leanne Menyweather first met Fr Peter at St Kieran’s at Brighton in 1992, and joined him at Redcliffe soon after his appointment as Parish Priest. “I learnt very early on that Fr Peter was very pastoral,” Mrs Menyweather said. “He always made his parishioners his top priority spiritually. He would still say Morning Mass even on his days off.” Mrs Menyweather said Fr Peter was the driving force in Holy Cross Funerals building its own funeral home and mortuary on the Kippa-Ring Church grounds.

Busy season for snake catcher STORY KYLIE KNIGHT GRIFFIN snake catcher Josh Castle says it has been a busy snake season across the region, with most action in the north. Mr Castle, of Josh’s Snake Catching and Relocation, said there had been more callouts in the northern part of the region, particularly in Morayfield, Caboolture and Elimbah. In saying that, he is called to the Redcliffe peninsula and North Lakes a few times a week. Mr Castle said Rothwell and Kippa-Ring were areas he visited frequently and he removed a red-bellied black snake from Redcliffe this season. He has also removed brown snakes and red-bellied black snakes from Murrumba Downs this summer. A couple of callouts which stand out in his memory are a 2.1m carpet python found in a toilet S-bend at Taigum. The homeowner had called a plumber, when the toilet would not flush, and they called Mr Castle when they discovered the scaley problem. It had climbed up the pipe

Another amusing discovery was a snake in a box of home brew beer bottles on Christmas Day at Morayfield. Callouts have started to slow, thanks to recent rain and cooler weather. Mr Castle said one in three houses had a snake in the roof, so while it was difficult to keep them away, there were things homeowners could do.

Snakes are attracted to chickens, guinea pigs and birds. If you have these as pets, it is a good idea to keep them as far away from the house as possible and to use snake-proof mesh on enclosures. Snakes will regularly travel through a yard and if they can not find a safe place to stop, they will most likely keep moving. Do not leave corrugat-

ed iron and timber lying around, which hold heat and provide a safe place to rest. If you do find a snake in your yard, take a photo (if it is safe to do so) and send it to a licenced snake catcher. Do not ask community facebook page members to identify it for you. Some venomous species can be easily confused with non-venomous ones, with deadly consequences. It is also important to keep

an eye on it, so the snake catcher can find it easily. Mr Castle said snakes were to be respected, not feared, as more people died from horses, dogs and car accidents than snakes. “People are scared because of what they can do. If you leave them alone, they’re not going to hurt you,” he said. “But if you look at every snake as deadly, that’s the best way to stay safe.”

Summit tackles youth crime DOMESTIC violence in youth, knife crime and early intervention were among the issues discussed at the second annual Queensland Police summit focussed on youth crime prevention at North Lakes. Held last week, the summit focussed on preventing youth crime, including delivering projects, and discussions on related emerging issues. Moreton Police District Officer Superintendent John Hallam said the summit was a chance for agencies to discuss initiatives and look at what can be done better to address the issue of youth crime in the region. Police and Corrective Services and Fire and Emergency Services minister Mark Ryan said it was an opportunity for experts to address the root causes of youth crime. “The diverse agencies represented at this summit all have a common goal and are united to ensure young people are given every opportunity to make constructive choices that will provide them with options to build a positive and productive life,” he said.

THE GKS Law 10km wheelchair race is expected to draw a competitive field and open the event up to people of all abilities when it’s added to the Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run program this year. Registrations have opened for the category along with the GKS Law 10km, the 5km, Sesame Lane 3km and Redcliffe Markets 21km events. Elite wheelchair athlete Natasha Price typically competes in marathons but says a shortage of road races also forced her on the track to compete in shorter events such as 100m, 200m and 400m. Miss Price said being able to compete in the GKS Law Wheelchair 10km race was “fantastic news”. “For a long time, we’ve been saying there needs to be more events for us to participate in. We want to develop athletes, so they can represent our country but can’t because it’s so hard to find events they can take part in,” she said. “I can imagine a lot of Queensland athletes

The inclusion of the 10km wheelchair category will be a fantastic addition, making the event as inclusive as the course allows,” he said. Thanks to Spinal Life Australia, prize money of $800 for first place, $400 for second and $200 for third will give competitors added incentive, and it mirrors what is on offer in the GKS Law 10km run/walk category. The additional category coincides with news the course has been certified by the Association for International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). This means the course has been accurately measured and set up, so competitors complete the correct distance and can be

THE COVID-19 pandemic has produced many acts of kindness, but an act of generosity by Lisa and David Dring is all heart. The couple bought a defibrillator, for $1800, and donated it to Cactus Jack’s bar and grill at Redcliffe for use by the broader Redcliffe community in an emergency. “We do smaller acts of kindness every day, but so many have lost their lives to COVID worldwide. I knew I couldn’t make a global difference, but I may be able to make a difference to one life, one family, one community,” Mrs Dring said. “I wanted to give something to the community that wasn’t restricted to a particular group, ethnicity or cause – I am supporting life. “This way, I have no idea who may benefit – the defib can be used for any age for many reasons.” She said Cactus Jack’s was the perfect location because it was close to the jetty, markets and where people gather until late at night. The venue also has a big

Team effort a buzz STORY NICK CROCKFORD SAM Jays had “no second thoughts” when he sat down on Friday to lose his flowing locks – just as his mum Deb did last year. The 16-year-old was among 50 students and staff at Grace Lutheran College, Rothwell, who took part in The World’s Greatest Shave earlier this month. Sam and Deb have supported the Leukaemia Foundation’s Shave for a Cure in memory of Sam’s uncle Scott (Deb’s brother) who died of cancer last year. Deb helped raised money for two weeks’ accommodation for families who live a long way from treatment. Sam wanted to support the ‘drive’ for rapid advances in blood cancer treatment. Many others at Grace had their hair coloured as the college raised more than $30,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation. Sam was “nervous and excited” before the shave and afterwards said: “It goes a lot faster than I thought. I look older. I look like a thumb! “But it’s all going to a good cause so I’m happy

to do it for uncle Scott and raise awareness of so many people suffering from this terrible thing. “I’ve always wanted to do it, but now it is so much more important to me and my family.” Mum Deb was watching as Sam faced the clippers. “I’m very proud of him,” she said, “I’d like to keep fundraising for such a good cause. “I am thinking about doing it again. I was tempted but this is Sam’s year to do it for his uncle and such a great cause.” Sam and Deb said they hoped uncle Scott would have been “blown away and very proud” of their efforts. In 2020, Grace College was the fifth highest fundraising school in Queensland for the Leukaemia Foundation during Shave for a Cure.

Message for all ages STORY KYLIE KNIGHT AUTHOR Gretta Kennedy and illustrator Karryn Lesley hope their latest creation, a puppy named Tessa, will help them teach children acceptance of people with a disability. The puppy stars in their latest book, Puppies Don’t Judge, which will be available for purchase at the Redcliffe Markets this weekend. It follows the release of their first book about three years ago titled Anna – Just Being Me. “I want to make the world accept people with disabilities,” Ms Kennedy said. She has love of books, has worked at Redcliffe Library for 27 years and has lived with a disability her whole life. Ms Kennedy says the behaviour of others around her still hurts, but she hopes teaching children to be more accepting will make a difference to future generations. “It’s important because in

the school holidays there’s kids coming into the library, asking questions, who look at me differently because of my voice,” she said. “I’m hoping their parents might teach them (with the help of this book).” There’s also a strong anti-bullying message. “In primary school, I was shy to talk to people because I felt they would laugh at my voice. High school was a bit better,” she said. Ms Kennedy has included a list of tips at the back of the book to help children learn how to treat people with disabilities. Ms Lesley met the author at Seaside Artists gallery about five years ago and was keen to illustrate the first book when she heard Ms Kennedy was searching for an artist. She has since become her support worker and friend, and did not hesitate to collaborate on the second book. “I think it’s important to teach children from an early age that everyone is

unique in their own special way,” Ms Lesley said. She believes bedtime stories are the best way to do that with small children. “It’s something that becomes normalised and they will hopefully speak out when they see someone being bullied,” she said. CHRIS and Rachelle Bovell’s business is still evolving after 25 years, a fact that has seen it thrive during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pure Sleep Bedding at Clontarf is not reliant on overseas suppliers and instead makes its own foam, its own mattresses and sells them direct to the public. And with a shift in consumer sentiment to support local brands, they have never sold so many mattresses. The business started at Strathpine 25 years ago, manufacturing foam and supplying foam cut components to bedding and furniture manufacturers. When cheap imports started to flood the market and many of their customers started to go broke, Mr Bovell recognised they needed to evolve. “We then started making beds and also furniture and we had a quite a large upholstery business,” Mr Bovell said. “Again, we had the vertical integration – we were making the foam,

We thought what we’ll do is start retailing ourselves.” Around the same time, the Queensland Government launched its crackdown on bikies and there was a surge in prisoner numbers and need to increase the number of prisoners in a cell. As a result, the standards for foam mattresses changed and there was a push for non-flamable bedding. “We set about developing a mattress that simply doesn’t burn and ended up being successful.” That was more than five years ago and resulted in a huge injection of cash that brought seemingly

Set your egg timer and make sure you don’t miss Margaret Fulton – The Musical, when it comes to Redcliffe Entertainment Centre on April 10. The show is based on Margaret Fulton’s biography I Sang for my Supper. It takes audiences on a journey through her life from cookery teacher to the world of business, magazine food editor and international best-selling recipe book author. Judy Hainsworth, who plays Fulton, said the show featured new, original music. “It’s very much like a traditional musical … sometimes the characters get to a point and have to break into song,” she said. “There’s some really fun songs including a whole song about jam, a love duet and a rousing finale. “The music just comes in and out and adds an extra dimension and flavour.” The 38-year-old tracked down a copy of Fulton’s biography on Ebay and borrowed her mum’s copy of the famous cookbook to research the role. She also looked for information online and tried to find footage of interviews the cookery icon had given before her death in 2019. “I couldn’t find a lot of footage of her when she was younger, so I have to imagine what she sounded like and how she

She found her own way − not just in cooking, but also in business and marketing.” Hainsworth said Fulton had a big impact because her approach was simple – much like her recipes. “She related to the housewives

The musical’s tour was postponed last year, due to COVID-19, but opened on March 13 at Caloundra. “I feel so lucky to be in Australia and be in this show when so many theatres all over the world are closed and some people can’t even leave their houses at the moment,” Hainsworth said.

IF YOU’VE been thinking about building a raised garden bed or retaining wall, the Easter long weekend is the perfect time to do it. The experts at Nuway Landscape Supplies Pavers and Walls at Mango Hill have some tips and tricks to help you achieve the result you are looking for and avoid any costly mistakes. General Manager Steve Myatt said, with good planning and weather, these two projects were manageable across a long weekend. Pine sleepers have been a popular material in the past 12 months as residents looked for relatively inexpensive DIY gardening options during the COVID-19 shutdown. Mr Myatt said sales increased 500 per cent as homeowners added vegetable gardens to their backyards. “That happened across the board. We were almost at the stage of running out of timber in the industry,” he said. The best material depends on the level of DIY the homeowner is capable of. Timber sleepers are quick and easy to work with, the next step up is blocks with ‘lips’ at the back to guide their assembly and then blocks that require more expertise

Mr Myatt said timber and blocks were perfect for raised garden beds because the soil did not heat up as much as other products and would not dry out as quickly. Careful planning is key before you get the shovels out. “The first thing you need to do is some research on what you want as a finished product … what look you want,” he said. He then recommends visiting a landscape supplier and getting some advice. “We can help them work out what they need,” he said. Most stock is available straight away, but if you have a big weekend project in mind it is best to

wide, 200mm deep and compacted. Then place 20mm of sand on top of it to help you level out the allimportant first row. Some people prefer a concrete footing, but it is not necessary in the majority of cases. It is also important to make sure you have good drainage behind the wall.

It's a good project because you can do it yourself “Most walls you see fall over don’t have the right drainage,” he said. Another key consideration is block choice. Select the correct block for the job – the cheapest block might not be engineered for a

high wall and will fall over. If you’re unsure, get some advice. “In general, customers ask how to do it. We spend time with them and go through it,” Mr Myatt said. There are instructions available, and some great DIY videos on the Nuway website. When it comes to raised garden beds, My Myatt said, with the right products and advice, it was difficult to go wrong. Hooked On Fishing and Boating Fishing

I HEAR regular stories of line breakages while fighting fish, so thought I’d talk about drag settings this edition. Break-offs due to drag settings can occur for several reasons - excessive drag for line class, excessive drag for rod rating, uneven or lumpy drag when under load, or poor quality drag components. The generally accepted rule for drag settings is one third of the breaking strain of our line. i.e. 6kg line = 2kg of drag. I measure this with an accurate scale straight off the reel, and then, through the guides with the rod loaded up to its designed working curve. I prefer a maximum 90 degrees, as more than this increases pressure on my line, increasing risk of bustoff. Example: line travelling a gentle curve travels with less resistance than line travelling around a, “u”. Line coming off a reel under pressure should run smoothly. Bumps or unevenness cause strain on the line to fluctuate or surge significantly, putting extra stress on line and connections. Regular care and maintenance help to eliminate this problem. I rarely change drag settings while fighting a fish. If I need more drag during the fight, I lay my finger gently on the spool to add extra pressure. Very little pressure is needed for a marked increase in drag. If a fish looks like he’s going to take me into a snag or around a rock and I need to lock up, I simply hold the spool, lay the rod over to try and turn the fish, and hope that I don’t break off. Sometimes the fish win.

I set and check my drags before leaving to go fishing − I get a mate to pull line off over the rod, to check the working curve and I rarely change them. Occasionally, if I’ve felt the line rubbing on rock or I’ve had an extended fight on larger fish, I may back the drag off slightly when close to landing. If I do this, I use my scale to reset Remember: Talk to old people, they know stuff you don’t. Talk to young people, they know stuff you don’t.

IT IS the time of the year when many local anglers are starting to think about chasing tailor. I will certainly be around the bayside very soon chasing them land-based – something I have done religiously for over 30 years. Tailor is great eaten fresh or smoked. Tailor is a widely distributed species in temperate and tropical waters. It is commonly referred to as ‘elf’ in South Africa and ‘bluefish’ in the US, Brazil and the Mediterranean. It is the only member of the family Pomatomidae and it is unusual that a family of fish has only one species. Tailor around the world show a preference for water temperatures between 18–27°C. There are two separate populations of tailor in Australia. One on the east coast and one on the west coast. On the east coast of Australia, tailor range from about Wilson’s Promontory in Victoria to Fraser Island with a few straggling a bit further north. Australia’s tailor populations are separate from those elsewhere in the world. While spawning was initially considered to occur during a single period between August and October, information on the distribution of tailor larvae along the coast identifies that the spawning period is much longer. Although the main spawning activity occurs at Fraser Island, spawning is recorded further south. The run of “Christmas choppers” on surf beaches in summer are typically in roe. Larvae produced during spawning are washed south on the East Australian Current. Some juvenile tailor recruit into estuaries while others stay in coastal areas. Tailor are a fast-growing species, reaching about 27cm

DR DAZZA fork length in their first year with most fish caught under four years of age. Tailor spawn in only their second year. Very few tailor on the Australian east coast are older than seven years of age. Larger adult tailor enter Moreton Bay itself predominantly between April and August. Some of the biggest fish are caught on surf beaches such as North and South Stradbroke Island in October and November. Throughout their range, catches of tailor are highly variable, driven by interannual variability in stocks and variations in local movement patterns. In the case of fish along surf beaches, an appropriate set of beach conditions that attracts the fish very close inshore and available to anglers is also required for successful catches. It can be a source of frustration that the tailor that were there yesterday are gone today, or that the same beach location that was productive last year, has no fish this year. That is just the nature of the beast. At times, boat anglers report large ‘plagues’ of tailor on offshore reefs, often when beach anglers are not catching many fish. The environmental factors which drive the interannual variability in tailor stocks are not well understood.

The two types of Agent There are 2 types of Agents and before you ask I’m not going to say good ones or bad ones. What I’m talking about is the type of relationship that an Agent forms with “their client”. The 2 types of Agent’s are described as follows: Sellers Agent: this is the traditional Real Estate Agent most people think of, where a person engages an Agent to market and sell their home. The Selling Agent has a duty (called a Fiduciary duty) to the seller which includes acting honestly, ethically, with loyalty and dedication to purpose at all times. They must always act in the Sellers best interests. In exchange for this the Seller allows the Agent to sell the property and earn a commission. Buyers Agent: a Buyers Agent performs the same duty as a Seller’s Agent but in this case it’s the reverse, they are acting on behalf of a Buyer. The Buyers Agent is appointed to search for a home for the Buyers and has a duty to the Buyer to act in their best interests at all times. Why do I bring this up? Well at the moment with stock levels very low, many Agents seem to be confusing their role. Plenty are running around

acting for Buyers but then asking the home Seller to foot the bill, this creates a conflict of interest. My view, if an Agent knocks on your door saying they have a Buyer for your home what I’d say is pretty simple: “if you have a buyer, that’s great. You are obviously working for the Buyer so you will not be asking me to pay a commission if we sell.” (then watch their face). The same holds true with conjunctions. If an Agent is introducing and then negotiating on behalf of a Buyer, it is pretty clear they are working for the buyer. It’s ridiculous that they ask for their fee to come from the selling Agent. Agent’s should not be confused by whom they are working for, it is ABSOLUTELY CLEAR. The person they represent MUST ALWAYS BE the one that ends up paying the commission. Anything else generates a conflict of interest. In a red-hot market with prices moving daily, engaging an Agent who understands their duty is paramount. CAPTAIN’S CALL HEADING into our round 1 clash with the Mackay Cutters, the preparation was slightly different than normal. An away trip generally sees us travel the night before the game allowing us to get up there, relax and prepare. However, due to COVID, we had to travel on game day. Our focus for round 1 was simple − hold on to the footy and compete hard. In what could be a record for the club, we had 13 players make their Dolphins debut with a strong contingent of Warriors joining us. We made heaps of errors, but showed plenty of resilience and came away with a hard-fought 30-28 win. My pick for man of the match goes to our hooker Manaia Cherrington. He set up two tries, scored a try and was dangerous every time he ran the ball. In every successful team I have played in, we have always found a way to win ugly and get away with the two points in games that could go either way. We’ve already shown that this year. We have a lot to work on before our round two game against Norths Devils. They have some quality Broncos dropping back including our very own Tyson Gamble. With the affiliate club change, he’s been forced to wear a Devils jersey. For those wanting to tune in, it’s on Sunday at 2pm on Channel 9 and Kayo.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD NORTH Lakes racer Ryan Suhle will head to Sydney in May with an impressive lead at the top of the 2021 Porsche Sprint Challenge standings. Suhle dominated the chal-

lenge’s opening round at Phillip Island in Victoria, winning the first race and being runner-up in the second. The 18-year-old had contrasting conditions at the island circuit, racing in the dry and then heavy rain,

during which he spun off once. “They were probably the worst conditions I’ve ever had,” said Suhle, who started the first race of the year in pole position after qualifying. “There was a lot of water

on the track, aquaplaning a bit. (Those conditions) bite some times, but it was good to recover. “I think a lot of people thought it (the race) should have been stopped, but happy to come away with the lead in the championship.”

AN impressive fleet is gearing up for the 73rd Brisbane to Gladstone (B2G) Yacht Race which starts at Shorncliffe and goes past Redcliffe Peninsula on Good Friday. Tens of thousands of people will line the foreshore as more than 50 yachts start racing on April 2 following the 11am start. The club was third in Metro 3 in 2009 and lost the grand final to Redlands 1-0, but was Metro 2 Premiers in 2010 and beat West End Partisans 2-1 in the final. Redcliffe PCYC was runners-up in the first season of Brisbane Capital League 3 in 2013 and lost the grand final to Kangeroo Point 2-1. This season Redcliffe PCYC is in Capital League 2 with its first match at Kangaeroo Rovers on April 10. It also follows an announcement in January by The Lakes FC and North Lakes Mustangs to merge within two years.

Lakes’ dramatic win THE Lakes FC opened their Brisbane Premier League (BPL) account with a stunning victory over premiers St George Willawong on Saturday. Evans was ninth on his debut in the Australian Formula Ford Championship earlier this month. Highlights from the Formula Ford round will be included on SBS Speedweek on Sunday from 1pm.

STORY JODIE POWELL THEY might play at different age levels, but three Redcliffe Tigers AFL players have one thing in common – they all love tackling. Under-15 Girls player Tyra Jenkins joined the club halfway through last season after her Dad signed her up. “I’d wanted to play for a while, but I was unsure about it, but it’s been really good,” Tyra said.

Poppy Barber also started last year and takes to the field for the 2021 season in the Under-13 side. “My friends needed more players for their team and I really liked it,” Poppy said. “I like getting the ball and people tackling you – it’s a good sport to do if you like running.” Ella McCall will line up for the Under-17 Girls this year, having finished her first season last year being named the Players’ Player, Best and Fairest and Rising

“We played the schools cup and I had no idea what I was doing – I just kicked the ball to whoever was calling my name. “I knew I had something missing in my life. It must’ve been footy.”

Ella said she enjoyed the physical side of the game – making contact and tackling – and urged other girls to give it a go. “If you don’t like it, that’s ok, but you never know until you try it.” Tigers media manager Kylie Milstead said the club still had vacancies in its under-9, under-11, under-13, under-15 and under-17 girls’ teams and the under-14 boys’ side, as well as the Kindy Kick program for 3-5-year-olds.

On its Facebook page the club said: “This means the soccer club will be an incorporated entity with a new name, branding and a fresh focus for the future.” An interim committee will work this season to prepare for the change.

REDCLIFFE PCYC Dolphins is preparing for one of its biggest changes in almost 40 years – but the club’s community focus will remain unaltered. There will be a “new look and feel” to the football (soccer) club as it prepares to separate from the PCYC organisation. Redcliffe PCYC Dolphins, which was formed in 1982, has always operated under the management of the adjoining PCYC in Kippa-Ring.
