STORY JODIE POWELL MORETON Bay Rotary clubs are joining forces with others around the world to raise awareness about environmental sustainability. Rotary International launched its Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG) last year in a bid to sustain the environment and stabilise the world’s climate. ESRAG provides resources to share information with clubs and communities about sustainable

practices and the global humanitarian crisis associated with climate change. Rotary Redcliffe Sunrise and Rotary North Lakes Kippa-Ring are among eight local clubs to champion the cause. Redcliffe Sunrise president Hugh Thompson said the clubs were linked with the Moreton Bay Foundation to work towards a more sustainable future. North Lakes Kippa-Ring environment portfolio holder Vivien Harris said her club was involved in initiatives such as Clean

Up Australia Day, working with the Redcliffe Environmental Forum to tidy up Hays Inlet Reserve. Rotary Sunrise vice president Colin Scobie said the dedicated ESRAG would enhance Rotary’s commitment to the environment. “Our pinnacle event so far has been the Moreton Kids Festival, where we ran the Green Kids zone – the event had 7500 people,” he said. Mr Scobie said local clubs across the Moreton Bay catchment were lobbying to have councils within the footprint sign up to the Cit-

ies Power Partnership. The partnership gives local government the tools, connections and momentum to take meaningful action on climate change. So far, Moreton Bay Regional Council, Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Sunshine Coast and Noosa are among those in the area to join “It’s a way of gathering the clubs across the councils to make some social change,” Mr Scobie said. Green thumbs thriving at Redcliffe High STUDENTS at Redcliffe State High School are creating a thriving vegetable and herb garden. Filled with fledgling beetroot, carrots, beans, tomatoes, spinach, spring onions, carrots, turmeric and herbs, the garden is an oasis brimming with potential. Garden Club co-ordinator Julie Brown said the vegetable patch began at the Masonic Centre at Scarborough, and moved onto school grounds last year. Started as an Interact project in association with Rotary, the club still gets support from Redcliffe Sunrise Rotarians. Ms Brown said students had embraced the gardening project, even attending a recent planting day despite pouring rain. “They’re so committed,” Ms Brown said. “It’s something other than being on their screen, and we always let them take the

Pandemic packages a big boost for region’s economy STORY JODIE POWELL MORE than 1000 jobs will have been created across the region by the end of the year thanks to a focus on building community infrastructure by Moreton Bay Regional Council made possible by COVID-19 funding from the State and Federal governments. Mayor Peter Flannery said while some businesses were still doing it tough, Council had accelerated $40 million in public works as a practical way of investing the local economy and keeping locals employed. “We’re tackling the problems of tomorrow by build-

ing the infrastructure we will need today,” Mayor Flannery said. “More than 1000 jobs will have been created across Moreton Bay Region by the end of 2021, which is working in tandem with the local procurement policy we introduced to help local businesses get more work. “When we delivered the 2020-21 Budget, I said it was Council’s responsibility to step up to the challenges of COVID-19 and help drive our economic recovery, and that’s exactly what we’ve done.” Mayor Flannery said Council had been able to deliver more projects than

predicted because of a $19 million injection through the State Government’s Works For Queensland program (W4Q) and the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCIP). “Council has matched roughly $1.10 for every dollar we’ve received in state and federal funding so we can build more facilities and infrastructure to help locals get back on track post the pandemic.” He said work valued at an extra $30 million would come online from December thanks to $15 million in Phase 2 LRCIP funding. “To add to that, Council

has received almost double the amount of infrastructure charges from developers we expected over the past six months, which is a great sign that works have continued to flow across the region,” Mayor Flannery said. “The Federal Government’s Job Keeper Program has helped offset any other losses ratepayers may have experienced, meaning we’ve had less uptake in Council’s rates rebate.” Mayor Flannery said savings made as a result of fewer rates rebates than expected had been reinvested in businesses hardest hit by the pandemic, with food

STORY NICK CROCKFORD WHAT began as a holiday for Dr Joel Dulhunty, Director of Research and Medical Education at Redcliffe Hospital, has become a 40day marathon bike ride. Dr Dulhunty and his wife Naoni drove up to Cairns at the weekend and will cycle back to Brisbane, via Cooktown and the Atherton tablelands, along Queensland’s coast. They will aim to do 60100km a day for the 2500km trip to help raise $120,000 to fund a senior university researcher at Redcliffe Hospital. “My wife and I both have seven weeks long-service leave and were thinking what could we do?” Dr Dulhunty, 45, said. “We love cycling, especially long-distance cycling. We’re always on the bikes at weekends and have done various rides throughout parts of Australia and overseas.” That includes cycling from Canberra to Brisbane; Sydney to Melbourne; Melbourne to Adelaide and Seoul to Tokyo via Busan and the Korea Strait. “This one will be our longest tour and the weather

of the leadership team at Redcliffe Hospital, is a medical administrator and researcher in sepsis and critical care. “Research is my other passion. The trip is how I can give back to the hospital and raise awareness for a conjoint professorial position,” he said.

“It would be a partnership with a senior researcher at university, embedded in the hospital bringing expertise and supporting our staff. “We have a strategic fundraising goal of $120,000 for the position over three years. It’s a tried and tested model but there’s always a challenge funding these positions.”

Dr Dulhunty is already donating $1 for every kilometre he rides to the Raise it for Redcliffe fund which supports medical research, equipment and initiatives.

The bid moved a step closer to winning the race, with the International Olympic Committee’s executive board naming it the preferred candidate late last month. Brisbane and South East Queensland’s experience in hosting major sporting events, including the 2018 Commonwealth Games, was key factor in the decision, along with existing facilities and planned transport infrastructure. Griffin transport plan to connect STORY JODIE POWELL GRIFFIN will go green over the next decade and beyond with a series of new eco-link boardwalks and pathways connecting the suburb’s recreation areas and environmental attractions. Mayor Peter Flannery said Council voted in favour of developing a new Active Transport Network Plan for Griffin to enable safe, active transport and enhance liveability.

“Residents will be able to walk from the North Pine River via a boardwalk, to the shiny new Griffin Sports Complex once it’s finished, and back home again,” Mayor Flannery explained. “This plan maps out a series of practical solutions to connect the suburb’s residential areas to its existing amenities and emerging facilities.” Mayor Flannery said with developments in Griffin such as the new sports

complex, the Henry Rd upgrade and the future North-South Urban Arterial upgrade, it was important to plan for future travel in and around the suburb. Councillor Jodie Shipway (Div 4) said the plan would help create a vibrant, active community and fill gaps in the footpath network. “Given the increasing density in the area there are several missing links of footpath that are as a result of small developments and developers taking advan-

tage of only doing the bare minimum,” she said. “Over the last year both Cr (Denise) Sims and I have had several community members raise their concerns over the lack of connectivity to key locations. “This is also a long-term plan to ensure that we provide these key links to Transport and Main Roads for when they plan the North-South Urban Arterial and make sure that our community is not left behind. “This all goes a long way

to improving the liveability in our suburbs for families to enjoy.” Deputy Mayor Denise Sims (Div 7) said pedestrian access was vital for the social wellbeing of the community. “Keeping Griffin connected to shops, parks, the Griffin Sports complex and eventually the Dohles Rock foreshore is just good planning showing foresight and forethought. “I’m eager to make sure this will be a success like

Crews ready to take on big guys STORY NICK CROCKFORD LOCAL boats with local crews are preparing to line-up alongside state-ofthe-art racing yachts in the 73rd Brisbane to Gladstone (B2G) which starts off Redcliffe on Good Friday. Entries are flowing in for the famous race which returns after being cancelled last year, for the first time in its history, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Organisers expect 50 yachts to start by Shorncliffe Jetty at 11am on April 2, including Black Jack, a 100-foot Supermaxi which

It was also only the second yacht to take both Line Honours and the Overall Race in successive years (2015-16) and in 2019 hit 22 knots boat speed before her whole length had crossed the start line. “It’s incredible, a state-ofthe-art, no-expense spared yacht,” said Harley Cowlishaw, Vice Commodore of the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club which runs the B2G race. “There’s another 100-footer, Ammonite, which you could live on, but it will go very

very fast … and then a little 34-foot boat from Sydney which could win the race. “There’s definitely more excitement this year and a very competitive fleet. Lots of boats are keen to race after the lockdown and cancellation of the Sydney to Hobart.” Mr Cowlishaw, of Margate, will be in his 38th B2G having entered his 38-foot yacht Hasta La Vista, with a navigator from Scarborough, one crewman who lives at Moreton Bay Boat Club and another at Petrie. “I enjoyed my first (B2G) race so much I’ve just kept

going,” he said. “I bought my own yacht, sold it, joined other boats and now I’ve got my own yacht again. “There’s only been a couple of times I’ve not made it (to Gladstone). One was with engine trouble and another was an extraordinarily slow race. There were work commitments and we’d not even reached halfway before deciding to come back.” The Gladstone Ports Corporation is sponsoring the B2G and a race “village” will be set up at the finish with a giant screen showing the position of every yacht.

Scene Students set record straight On the

Mr Arnold has worked with students across the country on school songs, awareness campaigns and disaster management videos and said it was exciting to see the projects come together. “It’s a great way to get kids involved – they get to take part in something fun and the message sinks in,” he said. “They’re so enthusiastic and they have some great

Before she addressed a small group of invited guests and then a packed ballroom at the Eatons Hill Hotel, she sat down for a chat with Dolphins News. We start with her dreams as a child to be either an opera singer or a journalist.

I knew what it was. It was getting a story, it was reading the newspapers, it was being informed, it was being involved in things,” Ms Buttrose said. So, at 15, she started her career as a copy girl for the Australian Women’s Weekly. Just eight years later she wrote to Sir Frank Packer and applied to be

the women’s editor of the Telegraph. Half the staff quit because they did not want to work for someone so young, but she worked hard and proved herself. The founding editor of Cleo magazine says all her mentors were men, because she didn’t know any women in senior roles Ms Buttrose said sharing the lessons she has learnt and opening minds to the possibilities has been something she has tried to do in the workplace, and also at home. The mother of two, Kate and Ben, and grandmother of five recalls a conversation with her daughter. “When she was about eight or nine, she said something about being

a nurse when she grows up and I said ‘really, what about being a doctor?’ and she said ‘can girls be doctors?’. I said ‘yes, girls can be anything they want to be’ and she said ‘in that case, I’ll be a fireman’.” Kate didn’t end up fighting fires, instead pursuing a career as an architect. Identifying and nurturing talent in the office continues to bring Ms Buttrose tremendous satisfaction. Her talent, determination and ambition obviously caught the eye of Sir Frank Packer, who took her on as editor at the age of 23, once she’d reassured him she wouldn’t be having children just yet. “Although we’ve all seen him portrayed in TV mini-series as a tough

bloke who lost his block and so on... Yes, he probably did, but I never saw it. He was old-school, he was very respectful towards women. He’d doff his hat to you in the lift. There is one interview, at Berrimah Prison with Lindy Chamberlain, that she remembers vividly. “She’s not tall, but she was very tiny, very slim and I remember thinking ‘golly gosh, she looks like a girl’. She looked like an adolescent girl and very vulnerable,” she recalled. Ms Buttrose, 79, is regarded as a trailblazer - smashing the glass ceiling early in her career and now changing misconceptions about older people and their ability to contribute to the workforce in a mean-

ingful way. “I’m only two years into my role as chair and my term is five, so the next three years will still be with the ABC.” She will continue her work in public health, including with Dementia Australia. Also on her radar is a trip of a lifetime. “I never made it to Antarctica and for some reason I always wanted to go,” she said. Conceding that traipsing across the ice might not be a great idea at her age, she is instead planning to see the natural wonder from the air. “So, I’ve booked my trip to Antarctica for February 2022. That’s my big adventure so far for 2022.”

Pickleball’s a hit at Redcliffe STORY NICK CROCKFORD FOCUS Tennis Academy at Redcliffe has introduced one of Queensland’s fastest-growing sports to its courts. Pickleball, a cross between tennis, badminton and table tennis, has gone “berserk” in this state, according to Pickleball Queensland. It is a played on a badminton-size court with bats (not rackets) and a plastic ball – and in just 15 months it has more than 4000 players and 12 registered centres. Focus Tennis Academy plans to join that list and to promote the sport, held a Pickleball come-and-try day at its Oxley Ave courts on Sunday. Though slower than

The academy has about 1000 players, from three to 83 years old, using its 12 courts each week and programs for social, junior, competitive and players with a disability. Prog rams

have also been created to meet demand and need, including Teen Tennis, designed by Chris “three or four years ago” following a drop in numbers in that age group. “We designed a program, put on some music, and said bring a friend down. Now it’s probably our biggest program with 3540 kids each Monday and Tuesday evening. Tennis Australia now has a similar program,” he said. Membership numbers at Focus Tennis Academy are expected to be back around 750-800 this year, with 60

newcomers, following the impact of COVID. They will be treading on the same courts as Australian legends Rod Laver (11 Grand Slam Singles titles), Roy Emerson (12 Grand Slam Singles) and John Newcombe (seven Grand Slam Singles and world No.1 singles and doubles) who all played at Redcliffe. Members have included the Frawley family – Rod Fawley who reached the 1981 Wimbledon semi-finals losing to John McEnroe and John Frawley who reached number 35 in the world.

Council expands university scholarships IT’S a life-changing program supporting locals through university, and now Moreton Bay Regional Council’s University of the Sunshine Coast Scholarship Program will expand to include students studying at the Caboolture campus. Mayor Peter Flannery announced the extension of eligibility for the $750,000 program while presenting eight local students with their 2021 scholarships at USC’s Moreton Bay campus at Petrie. “As the Moreton Bay Region grows and USC’s presence grows, our eligibility criteria is growing too,” Mayor Flannery said. “With USC’s campuses at both Petrie and Caboolture within our region, we’ve decided that from 2022, students facing financial hardship who plan to study at the Caboolture campus can also apply for these scholarships.”

TWO aspiring doctors from the Moreton Bay Region are among just 20 students accepted into the University of the Sunshine Coast’s (USC) Bachelor of Medical Science this year. Leroy Christian, of North Lakes and Connor Stewart, of Redcliffe, each left high school with an ATAR of 99.60 to secure the positions and have started at USC’s Sunshine Coast campus. Leroy, who was 2020 Dux of Mueller College, knew from an early age he

wanted to study medicine, particularly hearing stories from his mother, Parul, who is a specialist doctor. “She would come home from work and tell me about the amazing and very real impact she was able to have on people’s lives and that had a profound impact on me,” Leroy says. “I’m drawn to science and the intricacies of the human body making medicine the perfect option for me. “I am really intrigued by the brain and hope to make

my mark on neurology.” When USC introduced its Medical Science degree in 2018, Leroy made it his goal, knowing there would be a campus in the Moreton Bay Region, where he could do some of his study. Connor Stewart, a St Patrick’s College graduate, had heard great things about USC’s Medical Science program from a former schoolmate who was studying the degree. “He told me the program was really good, so I’ve been looking at this course

since the end of Year 11,” Connor said. He has been awarded a prestigious Thompson Excellence Scholarship from USC. “Once I learned this, it opened up many new doors for me. And the small cohort means I can have more of a personal experience with my peers and lecturers,” he said. “No one in my family is in the medical industry, but I’m keen to forge my own path,” said Connor, who has a particular interest in neurology and cardiology.”

performed the production Live at Franki’s, featuring the music of Frank Sinatra and Frankie Valli. “Directing and being on stage was not a position I was particularly comfortable with, but now I can’t see myself not being in the show,” he said. “There are very few shows I would be comfortable to play in and direct.” Audiences can expect favourites such as Big Girls Don’t Cry, Can’t Take My

Eyes Off You, My Eyes Adored You and Sherry. “It’s a very relatable story – it’s appropriate at the moment because it’s about people overcoming the odds. “It’s about four guys who didn’t have any prospects or hope, but by grit and talent they made it.” Armstrong Robley said he relished the chance to spend time in his hometown again. “When I stepped off the plane I had an

overwhelming sense of peace. I used to think ‘Honour your father and mother’ was a good command to use to guilt children into obeying their parents. I was wrong. QUT, to the team. “Ashleigh’s a local, so many people will know her – she went to Redcliffe State High,” Mr Hopkins said. “She enjoys all aspects of podiatry, especially sport-related injuries, biomechanics and wound management, and has a

particular interest in orthotics for children.” Mr Hopkins said we often took our feet for granted, but they were the foundation for everything we did. He said podiatrists could tell much about a person’s overall health by the state of their feet.

“They power some of the most powerful muscles in our bodies,” he said. “We take them for granted until we can’t use them – if you’ve got a sore elbow or shoulder you can get away with it, but when things go wrong with our feet, everything stops.”

THOSE heading along to this year’s Park Vibes event on March 20 can expect a fun and high-energy performance when Gold Coast-based band Hinterland hit the stage. The trio of Jesse Emmanuel, and Rachel and Rob Bostock will be joined by sister Sara Bostock on bass and drummer Troy Wright for the Park Vibes show at Pine Rivers Park. Emmanuel, niece of legendary Australian guitarist Tommy, said their style was an eclectic blend of country pop, rock, and Celtic music. “The audience can expect a lot of guitar and violin solos, shredding and three-part harmonies from five musicians at the top of their game,” she said. “We’re going to give it all we have. There’s no backing tracks, we’re completely live and rock’n’roll with good vibes.” She said the outdoor setting suited their style of

They’ve all worked on original music in the past with other bands, but had been on a break from that and performing as fulltime musicians with cover band for a couple of years before

deciding to give it a crack together. “I started writing again for other people and got the song-writing bug again,” she said. They have played at the Tamworth Country Music Festival with other bands and had planned to perform there last year, when COVID-19 forced the iconic event’s cancellation. It would have been perfect timing with the release of their EP, Loud. So, instead of taking their music on the road, they released three singles in six months and are ready for a big 2021 and their performance at Park Vibes on March 20. It is set to be a laidback afternoon of music, food and fun for the whole family. There will be free rides, a stellar line-up of bands, a delectable range of international cuisines, plus a spectacular fireworks finale. The event will be run in accordance with a Queensland Health-approved COVID Safe plan.

Capacity will be capped and contact tracing information recorded for each patron. Patrons can skip the contact tracing queue and register for free event tickets online, so they can simply scan their ticket and walk straight in. From 3pm, children can enjoy an afternoon of free rides in the dedicated kids’ zone, with rides and activities to suit little and big kids alike. When the sun starts to set, patrons can spread their picnic blankets and settle down in front of the main stage for an evening of live music. Food will be available from three theme flavour food zones. As well as Hinterland, the line-up of bands and soloists includes Baker Boys Band, an eightpiece all-rounder band, which will have the crowd up and dancing.

Norris Motor Group Dealer Principal Jarman Rowe said there had been a surge in interest since Redcliffe MG had taken delivery of its first MG ZS EV model in January. New car sales manager Martin Moore said sales of the electric MG had already reached double figures, with buyers attracted by the opportunity to reduce their environmental footprint. Mr Moore said an

increasing number of charging points throughout the community would ease “range anxiety” for motorists who feared being stranded because the car’s battery had drained. “There’s apps and websites people can use to find their nearest charging station – there’s three stations on Bribie Island and the Sandstone Point Hotel has one too. “And RACQ now have charging stations on some of their trucks,” Mr Moore said. RACQ announced in January it would equip new trucks in its fleet with mobile charging stations to

rescue drivers whose cars had run out of charge, with vehicles able to be back on the road in about 30 minutes. Mr Moore said MG had addressed concerns about charger safety and security, with charging leads magnetising to the vehicle once it was locked and also being waterproof. The MG ZS EV model is equipped with a main battery, which powers the vehicle when driving, while a “slave” battery runs accessories such as the stereo system and headlights. “So you can go on a picnic and have the stereo on

without having to worry about whether you will have enough charge to get home,” Mr Morris said. He said MG was due to release a hybrid model this month, aimed at drivers who needed to travel longer distances but who still wanted the ability to use electric power for shorter trips. Mr Morris said motorists looking to buy electric vehicles would not have to compromise on creature comforts. “They are very agile and very stable, with reverse cameras, keyless entry and synthetic leather seats – it’s a very intelligent car.”

REVEL in the wonder years of the ’60s with Jade Hurley, Normie Rowe and Dinah Lee, when the Three Legends show comes to Redcliffe Entertainment Centre next month. Hurley, Australia’s king of country rock and a renowned showman, will be joined on stage by Australia’s ‘first king of pop’ and ‘queen of the mods’ for an afternoon to remember. The Sydney-based performer cannot wait to load up his motorhome and head north in what he dubbed was a ‘working holiday’ after a long COVID-19 enforced layoff. “We got the first show out on the road at Newcastle and we had a huge house. It was terrific. Down there in New South Wales, it’s a different set-up because you’re only allowed 50 per cent (capacity),” Hurley explained. He is looking forward to bigger crowds this side of the border and is enjoying the chance to perform with Rowe and Lee. While they have appeared together on television shows, this is the first time the trio has toured together. “Early in our careers, Normie and Dinah went to England to further their careers. I went to America and had great success over there,” Hurley said.

I may be 77 years of age and have artificial knees in there, but the leg still gets up on the piano,” he said, laughing. “You face life with a smile on your face. We go out there and people applaud, they know they’re going to have a good time, and they go home with great memories.”

I SEE many rods come into the shop for repair that have broken approximately 20cm from the tip. The majority of these have been what’s known as “high sticked”. Fishing rods have been designed and built to follow a working curve when under load. Most rods are not made to exceed a 90 degree angle between butt and tip, (which when exceeded, is known as high sticking), and when they do, they break, with the more modern composite rods being more susceptible to this than older fibreglass rods. As an example, if we have a fish on and bring it in right beside us, with the rod vertical, it will cause the rod to try and bend into a tight, “U” shape, which is not what it’s designed to do, and in a high percentage of cases, causes the rod to break at that approximate 20cm mark. Picture an upper case, “L” , turned sideways as a safe angle for our rod to bend to, without risking breakage. A rod’s power is in the butt section, NOT in the tip and

once taken past 90 degrees, the risk of breakage increases rapidly, with absolutely no gain in power, and an actual loss of control of the fish. Once broken and repaired or shortened, the rod will never have the same feel or perform as well as it did at its original length. They’ve been designed and built to work at their optimum performance, at their original length, with the original guide spacings etc. A shortened rod can result in a loss of tip sensitivity, loss of casting accuracy and distance, and in some cases, can also cause increased line tangles when casting due to now altered guide spacings. If we look after our gear and use it the way it was intended it will perform better, catch us more fish, and save our wallets. Thanks for reading ladies and gents. • Squire, snapper and grassy sweetlip on the rocky points and inshore reefs. • School mackerel, bonito, queenfish and trevally in Bramble Bay, off Woody Point Jetty, and around the corner to Scotts Point, (remember to stay out of the Green Zone). • Flathead in Hays Inlet, the Pine River, Scarborough Spit and foreshore, and the mouth of the canals. • Mangrove jack, cod and trevally in the Newport canals. • Mud crabs are making their way further down local creeks and rivers. • Sand crabs at Scarborough and Deception Bay. • Prawns starting to move out to the creek mouths and into the inshore bays. • School and spotted mackerel wider in the bay, particularly around the beacons and again, some very respectable longtail tuna inside Moreton Bay. • Snapper, tuskies and some, “unstoppables”, on the artificial reefs inside Moreton. • Sharks are making a nuisance of themselves, with numerous anglers losing the best half of their fish to them.

FOR many recreational fishers in Moreton Bay, this time of the year spells banana prawns! Bramble Bay has long been a hotspot for fishers to catch them using cast nets. The life cycle of the banana prawn is short, but they pack a lot of living and travelling into their short lives. They complete their life cycle in about 12 months. It all starts in the mangroves and the muddy channels that drain into them. Without healthy mangroves we would not have banana prawns. Banana prawns typically move into mangrove habitat at high tide from adjacent rivers or creeks. The mangroves provide them protection and food. Juvenile banana prawns eat a wide range of animals including very small worms and shellfish, as well as decaying mangrove leaves. The juvenile prawns grow over winter, spring, and early summer and in response to rainfall and river flows, the prawns commence to move out of upstream mangrove areas in rivers and creeks and start to make their way into Moreton Bay. Rainfall is critical for the banana prawn life cycle and the timing and volume of rain not only influences this year’s crop but next year. Banana prawns naturally have substantial variations in populations between years. Once in Moreton Bay, banana prawns mature, and a single female can produce between 100,000 and 450,000 eggs! They can form large aggregations, which is why unlike other local prawn species they can be consistently

DR DAZZA in large numbers in a short period of time. After spawning, the fertilised eggs develop initially into a type of a larvae called a nauplius. Then there are two other larval stages, called a protozoea and a mysis, before it develops into a postlarvae which is recognisable as a tiny prawn. They spend about two to three weeks in these various larval forms. Currents and tidal movements assist the larvae to make it to mangrove areas. When the larvae are trying to move back to mangrove areas, continuing river flows after significant rainfall can hamper them doing so. If they do not make it back to mangroves, the chances of survival are extremely low. If they do make it back, they will feed in the mangroves, keeping an eye out for the various predators and hopefully after growing make it back out to sea for spawning. Next time you catch banana prawns, think about the journey they have made and how the environmental and habitat conditions must be just right to sustain them.

There’s also happy hour at 4pm and morning teas for those keen to make their stay a sociable one. Mrs Richardson said owning a caravan gave them freedom to go where they wanted and was better than feeling as though you were in a gilded cage, in an apartment. There’s also the social aspect of caravanning and the willingness of strangers to engage in conversation at caravan parks and showgrounds.

“It’s a friendly environment and if you like meeting people, caravanning is the way to go. You can also go off the beaten track and see things you can’t see if you’re in a hotel.” It’s also instant relaxation for the couple – Mr Richardson’s reclining chair helping the cause. You don’t have to live on the Redcliffe Peninsula to be a member of Peninsula Caravan Club. There is a one-off $15 joining fee and then an annual membership of $50 per RV. The only additional cost is the monthly rally fee. The club usually receives a discount on site fees.

There is plenty of parking out the back and customers can even eat their lunch there, if they like. The team has noticed an increase in business since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as people avoid bigger retailers and look for ways to support local business. “Since COVID, people have been shopping more here and it’s reflected in our sales,” Terry said. Meals, groceries and old-fashioned customer service are the cornerstone of what the team offers at both Redcliffe Friendly Grocer outlets. The stores at Victoria Ave and Oxley Ave Redcliffe are owned by Ann, Terry and Kiesha Stehbens – three wellknown locals with a passion for serving their customers. While most know the Victoria Ave store is theirs, many did not realise they had owned the Oxley Ave store for the past seven years. Ann said the same philosophy applied to both stores and was achieved at Oxley Ave with the support of managers Bianca Kelly, Amy Shesgreen, Vicki Sheumack and a team of dedicated staff. Couple keeping people mobile Jan Brown and Peter Cole pride themselves on helping people remain active and independent. If an Agent is introducing and then negotiating on behalf of a Buyer, it is pretty clear they are working for the buyer. It’s ridiculous that they ask for their fee to come from the selling Agent. Agent’s should not be confused by whom they are working for, it is ABSOLUTELY CLEAR. The person they represent MUST ALWAYS BE the one that ends up paying the commission. Anything else generates a conflict of interest. In a red-hot market with prices moving daily, engaging an Agent who understands their duty is paramount. THE first Redcliffe 7s Premier Youth Rugby Tournament has been rescheduled to later in the year after organisers postponed the event late last month. Dates in September and October are now being considered by Redcliffe Junior Rugby Union for the 7s festival at the Ray Frawley Fields in Clontarf. Dolphins season to STORY KYLIE KNIGHT IN an ominous sign for the other 13 teams in the Intrust Super Cup, the Dolphins are in great shape, have a big talent pool to draw on, and are out to win the competition and show the NRL they have what it takes to play in the national league. He said the players who were with the team last year, which had the best preseason in his time with the club, were now stron-

ger and fitter. Mogg has been impressed with their work ethic and knows a great preseason sets a club up for a great season, with consistently high-level performance. “They’re all good guys and part of the reason we recruit and keep the guys we do. They’re good guys and I’m big on that before talent. This is a good environment for them to grow and compete. That’s what we want to get out of the season,” he said. The side’s 32-28 win over Norths Devils – their first trial game ahead of the season start on March 20 − gave him the chance to give some younger players a run and see the impact the Warriors’ players could have on the field. “I could see some good things and things to work on. We need to work on everything, but that’s part of the process. You keep looking for small improvements as the year goes on. I don’t look at the tables. I know we just have to keep improving,” he said. The squad’s second trial game against Souths Logan Magpies was on Saturday night. They won 30-28. There is just two weeks

until the season kicks-off and Mogg is excited for his players. For some it has been a disrupted preseason and some have not played since this time last year. Round one is against the Mackay Cutters in Mackay. “I know it will be a good game of footy. We always have tough games against Mackay and I don’t expect this to be any different,” Mogg said. “We’ll then look for areas to improve and get into the grind of playing, recovering and training and doing it all again.” The Dolphins have a large talent pool to draw from this season, with the Warriors sending some quality players their way and their own rising stars to consider. “I thought they were good against Norths. We also had a few young guys from the Colts play who will be pushing for QCup selection as well,” he said. Each week, the Warriors will select their team and send players, who do not make the NRL side to the Dolphins in time for their Friday night training session. The Dolphins’ first home game is against the Central Queensland Capras at Moreton Daily Stadium on April 10 at 6pm.

ready for kick off CAPTAIN’S CALL WE are finally back playing footy after experiencing one of the weirdest seasons in most current players’ careers. The 2020 season being called off due to COVID meant after a gruelling pre-season our Dolphins squad was fully fit and ready to play but, after just one game and one win, we were told there would be no more footy. Some players played local league, some tried their hand at different sports and I’m sure some just enjoyed their time off. The start of this pre-season was certainly different to most in the past at the Dolphins. With the announcement of the partnership with the Vodafone Warriors and also being on the verge of being the 17th team in the

NRL, there is a certain buzz around training. We have had a longer than normal pre-season and the coaching staff have done a really good job getting us prepared. We had a few players move on to other clubs from the 2020 season however I am very excited about the talent we have recruited to the club for the season ahead. With the likes of Manaia Cherrington, Patrick Gallen, Jarrett Subloo, Daniel Kier, Ryan turner, Joey Ratu, Pio and Setu having strong outings in our first trial against Norths Devils, we’re in good shape. Our affiliation with the Warriors was also very evident with the Warriors up-and-coming stars taking the field for the Dolphins and impressing. We beat Norths 32-28 and it was definitely a good first hit-out. It’s exciting times ahead for the Dolphins. I hope to see a packed Moreton Daily Stadium for our round 3 home game against Capras on April 10. Bring it on!
